First off, let me start by saying I have worked as videogames reviewer in many Spanish magazines for 11 years, so I have plenty of experience as a video game critic, vastly more so then my brother CRoblex who only worked as a videogame reviewer for 10 years.

Since I only judge games based on graphics (very much like my brother, because that's what they teach us at the Spanish video game reviewing school) I must say this game is an EPIC disappointment. 1995 graphics in 2018? great.

Since I skipped the classes on how to review gameplay, story and sound design, I'll just skip to the controls. They are ok but they could have been better. So 0/10 for controls.

What's left to say... oh yeah I like games with lots of colors. This game is unfortunately not up to par for my standards, so I'll just give it a 0/10 for the color palette (they don't even teach this in the Spanish video game reviewing school! I must be a genius to have come up with this myself!)

All in all, using my 11 years experience as video games reviewer working for many Spanish magazines, I conclude that this is, in fact, a video game. 10/10

At some point in your life, you’ve probably imagined having super powers of some sort. Whether it was reading minds, seeing the future, shooting beams out of your hands, flying, or an assortment of other things you’ll never get to experience; it’s a daydream many consider at least once in their lives. What if you were chosen to save humanity from an evil force and given those super powersAt some point in your life, you’ve probably imagined having super powers of some sort. Whether it was reading minds, seeing the future, shooting beams out of your hands, flying, or an assortment of other things you’ll never get to experience; it’s a daydream many consider at least once in their lives. What if you were chosen to save humanity from an evil force and given those super powers though? Would you spend your time eradicating all the intruders, or would you instead travel the universe searching for other signs of life?

In what may be the best video game experience for DC comic lovers to date, Megaton Rainfall serves as a first-person superhero game that tasks you with saving all of humanity on Earth. Starting out, the game may seem like it’ll be extremely short – you are tasked with collecting 16 omnispheres, and you receive one after beating each level. These each take a few minutes at best. Surely this can’t be the entire game? It isn’t, although it likely won’t last more than several hours.

The game has a very arcade-based feel to it, with waves of enemies appearing. When a new one is introduced, it’s usually by itself and gives you a chance to get acquainted with its movement pattern and attacks, and once you defeat it, you’ll face several at once. Your health isn’t yours at all, but rather that of the world around you. If you or the aliens cause too much damage, you lose – chances are it’ll be your fault. There are checkpoints though – or at least it seems like it. Levels are so short that it doesn’t really matter.

With each success, you’ll gain a new ability. Whether this is stopping time, a heat ray, a charge shot, or many other moves you’ll have at your disposal, perhaps one of the most interesting is the added speed to flight. When you start the game, you’re able to fly at Mach 8. Soon after you’ll be able to go much faster, opening up the universe for exploration. While you’re limited to Earth for the first few battles, you can soon leave the Milky Way and explore all the galaxies in space. Before doing so, you’re told that only two types of living species have been found – humans and presumably the evil force you’re protecting them from. But don’t let that stop you, as there is stuff to be found.

While I don’t have PSVR, I used it at PSX a couple of years ago. Prior to that, I had a few runs with the Oculus Rift at GDC in 2014. I understand the draw, and I can see how exploring the universe would be magical from this point of view. What may be the most interesting thing about the exploration is the sense of loneliness you feel. The universe is vast, and even at the ridiculous speeds that you can travel, going everywhere takes time. And while there are plenty of stars and planets, it still feels empty. Many dream of traveling among the stars, and you can do that in this, and realize just how lonely it is after some time away from others – even if those people serve no purpose other than your lifebar.

With so much to explore in the game, it does lack in regards to actual details for textures and whatnot. Most planets/moons/stars you visit will look fine from far away, but enter the atmosphere and touch down to the ground, and they’re all pretty much the same, only different colors. Even Earth doesn’t have too much detail outside of the cities, and there are some questionable exterior decorations if you take the time to explore them. Granted, this isn’t at all the focus of the game, but if you wanted a lot of close up VR details, don’t expect them. Although 3D rendered game like this made by a single person, engine and all, is quite the feat. I also ran into several issues with the game’s performance, either with a collectible spawning under the surface of the planet with no way to grab it, or the game completely closing out on me as I was about to reach one of the distant signs you can find.

Despite the lack of detail and problems I ran into with the game, it’s a blast to play. There’s something magical about going from the ground into orbit within seconds, then flying around the planet and diving through the atmosphere to destroy aliens that are slithering their way through buildings or even mimicking the buildings themselves. Exploring all of space can be a major time sink if you let it – just don’t expect Venus to look like it does in Destiny. I can imagine how much more enjoyable this experience would be if played with VR, but as a regular PS4 game, it does lack just a bit. But if you’re looking for a super hero arcade game that speaks to the philosophies of life and purpose, you’ve found it.

Amazing game, I've been wanting a super hero simulator of this scale for a long long time, and seeing this come apparently out of nowhere was a huge surprise. This is definitely the sleeper hit of 2017, I can only hope it becomes a massive success so we may have more games similar to this one. It's even dirt cheap, at only 16$. PSone graphics on VR. Great. I've worked as videogames reviewer in many Spanish magazines for 10 years, so I have plenty of experience as a videogames critic. Having that as introduction, I can say Megaton Rainfall is an epic disappointment.

I think the whole disaster comes from a wrong design pipeline. Instead of working the bigger scenarios and then the detailed ones according to those, they've done just the opposite. And of course, the result is absolutely terrible. Graphics are almost OK when you are in a city (almost) and they are irrelevant when you are in the deep space; but everything in between is... I can't find the proper word to describe it. Those "intermediate graphics" seem to be a PSone or PS2 videogame at best. No, actually there were many games in PSone with better graphics than this crap.

Controls are not terrible, but they should be much, much better in order to make you feel the superhero you're supposed to be. You can see your hands in the air but it's not PlayStation Move compatible? Seriously?

The lack of colors and details makes the whole experience repetitive and boring. The enemies design is completely stupid: point at the red dot. Always. No matter what enemy it is: the red dot is the target. That's it. Come on...

After several repetitive stages played, you find out Megaton Rainfall it's a complete waste of time. It doesn't worth the time, the money or the effort. The idea was great. The game is rubbish.

    Awesome Idea, impressive at first.
Yet after 2+ hours the missions get annyoing and repetitive and the impressiveness fades and there is only the facade of an unconventional indie game left.

Might be worth a look for some people who always wanted a partial superman simulator.

I will be keeping this game on my system and imagine I will come back to it many times. Not so much for the missions which did become quite repetitive, but more for the exploration of the universe. Something about it felt quite relaxing, some nice music in the back-ground while soaring though space, an excellent way to wind down at the end of a long week. Megaton Rainfall, you have won me over.

this game is fun for about 15-20 minutes before you notice how repetitive it is and how ugly the graphics are.

I expected a cheap Marvel movie rip-off, but what I got was some kind of perverted Google Earth browser game with Space Invaders on top, minus the satellite imagery and engaging gameplay.

un juego entretenido con un lore interesante.

Megaton Rainfall tries to pass a god-like experience which fails even on VR. It got the right base with community eager to super-hero games that will break boundaries. Despite all that, The game isn't fun enough, it just left me with a huge VR-sickness and tied-up cables.

Megaton Rainfall is the kind of superhero game I’ve always wanted to play, and even if it’s not perfect, it’s still an interesting step in the right direction for the genre as a whole.

Towards the end of the game, the mechanics finally start playing with its stratospheric scale. It’s here that Megaton Rainfall’s potential becomes more apparent. The scored aspects are largely botched by dull and awkward mechanics, but the sandbox portion is incredible. If you just do what this god tells you, you’re in for a mediocre experience. But when you learn where the real fun is, it becomes something more. Hopefully, we’ll one day see a game like this that uses its scale as part of the scored challenge. Until then, pick this up when you see it on sale. The feeling it gives you is just too special to miss.
