    A satisfying game play loop is the strongest aspect of Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling into Darkness. Resource management and balancing your character’s needs gives the game a risk vs reward angle that makes it feel more like a survival game than an action RPG. There are issues – frequent texture pop in and a lacklustre story being the most severe – but despite them, Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling into Darkness is a rewarding experience.

It has its high points, and the core experience is one that even non-anime fans could find enjoyable and worthwhile. It’s held back by needing to adapt material from the anime, though, and as a result, the full product is so much less enjoyable than it otherwise could have been.

    While the universe of Made in Abyss is recreated with class, as a game there is a lack of tension and balance. The game’s original story is faithful to its source material, but its twists feel so sudden that it is hard to advise newcomers to join the world of Made in Abyss through this game.

    Fans of the anime will still want to play Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling into Darkness, but do so with caution. The main draw for new fans will be exploring the abyss and seeing all its layers. There’s just a lot of garbage to sift through to get to the good stuff.

    Made In Abyss: Binary Star Falling Into Darkness is a game with good ideas, but poor execution and an awful adaptation of the source material. Both the gameplay and the story leave something to be desired and the only abyss that the game will inhabit being that of oblivion.

    Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling into Darkness sadly provides a more frustrating experience than enjoyable. Despite making a good effort to adapt the series' best attributes, its gameplay, short story, and poor performance greatly hinder the overall experience.

    The anime scenes could have easily been unlocked chapter-by-chapter as you progress through the main mode, but making the broken ‘demo’ mandatory before the actual game starts is such a waste of time that unless a cheat code or a patch comes out to separate them, this premature release is simply not worth the effort.

    Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling into Darkness retains very little of the heart and soul that made the anime and manga it's based on so appealing and engaging. There's a promising survival RPG campaign in the Deep in Abyss mode, hampered by some annoying game design decisions, but the fact that you're forced to trudge through a barebones adaptation of the anime in order to unlock it just makes a bad experience even worse.

    Riko and Reg's descent to the netherworld is a classic in existential dread and worldbuilding. Playing in this broken world imparts an even worse sense of dread.

    This is clearly a game you can only get something out of if you're a fan of the anime/manga. The developers cleary put effort into turning it into a fitting video game. It's also really cool to explore the Abyss by yourself.
    However, the game gets really boring and repetitive pretty fast, especially once you realize how shallow the game's mechanics are. Basically you run from the entrance of the level to the exit, which most of the time only takes some minutes and on the way you collect resource, to refill your hunger and kill some monsters along the way. That's all.
    Visually the game is also really poor, there were better looking games on PS3, it looks more like an upscaled PS2 game.
    What's even more annoying is, is that you are forced to play the story mode from the anime, before you are allowed to play the new storyline with your own character. This is incredibly annoying, when you have to sith through exactly the same story you already know, before you are allowed to see something new. Why did anyone think this is a good idea?

    So the basic idea for a good game adaptation is there, but the result is just so shallow, boring and has a really cheap feel to it. If you are a fan, it's maybe worth a look when it costs around 20 or less bucks, but just don't buy it for full price.    … Full Review »

    So I purchased this game because I am a fan on the anime and manga I have beaten the game now on ps4 but won’t be spoiling anything.

    So overall I find this game fun but will say there are flaws most of the game is go from point A to point B and they force you to play as Riko and beat her story first which is only to the end of the 2nd layer I wish it was longer but let you play the deep abyss mode without beating it.

    Early game is slow you basically meet everyone from the orphanage then go cave raiding with your new original character friends game will show you early on to worry about stamina and not going over weight and it’s sad there not much story involving them besides some side quests and some main quests (your best friend) wish they let you bring them alone like Reg.

    Like what I said earlier most of it is point A to B either by running or climbing costing hunger to go to different areas which is painful as food weights a lot and you can’t carry a lot and your tools weight a ton which your gonna need to bring at least two weapons and these weapons are like sticks that break in a couple of swings which is bad because monster Re spawn at a crazy rate.

    Combat is bland and basic and fighting most big monsters is stupid and a waste tho One boss fight was really fun learning the patterns and how to dodge its attacks only sad the boss fights before after are a joke and sad you can miss this boss fight.

    Time is weird in the abyss so you meet some people that don’t make sense to be there at the point so either you somehow managed to pass Riko and Reg because at the start of the game it doesn’t say when they left but if the hello story means anything it’s probably around the end of the 2nd layer when you come into the story not complaining because you meet one of my favourite characters but it feels weird.

    Skill point you get skill points for levelling up but the skill tree feels like it’s forcing you towards Climbing and food over everything else and unlock more as you get a higher grade whistle feels so weird making a 2nd character (was gonna make a walk through) and the noticeable difference.

    Graphics Well to say there bad is fair but it has its moments but still looks like a ps2 game sometimes.

    The Price It’s priced at a AAA game tag at 75+ bucks and feels like a B it’s crazy high for the content you get yes i enjoyed the game but is it worth the price tag no it feels to basic and graphics are ok but for 75+ I expect better you can tell they tried and really like the anime but either time or budget was low it’s the sad reality of games made from Anime being Ok but overpriced because of the series they are connected with.    … Full Review »
