This game is awesome. Brilliant story mode. The best Madden I’ve played ever. Long shot worth the price of the game. So realistic with the new frostbite engine.

I hate that I can no longer play coverage like I used to before the Frostbite engine showed up and that whoever I control is a liability on defense. That said, they have added and EXP slider that allows even the worst franchise to quickly develop into an All-star squad. Being able to take a average player who I am a fan of and turn them into a Madden Great was lost in the last several years and has returned. Please do not be too quick to judge this game. This years Madden has some pretty groundbreaking change. Considering previous titles and features, this is one of the more packed feature sets in probably a decade. MUT squads, Longshot, and Play Now Live, all together with a new engine make this the most desirable Madden in years. Definitely worth acquiring.

I was a bit late to the party this year picking Madden 18 up in April 2018.
A bit of a Ho-Hum entry this year.
Longshot, whilst a different take on "Career Mode" didn't do it for me and became a bit of a chore. Franchise, there still are a lot of creases that need ironing out, along with more options and ways to customise the experience. MUT is a lot of fun and is where I spend/spent

Graphically its a huge improvement (obviously) due to Frostbite.
On MAJOR niggle I have with all Maddens is the load times. EA needs to find away to speed things up.
I will be buying Madden 19 and am looking forward to it as much as ever.

Making me care for something I otherwise wouldn’t
Madden 18 calls itself the madden for everyone... and after hearing such great things about its story mode I put this statement to the test... and I wasn’t disappointed…
Longshot is essentially a 4 hour interactive movie where you play as Devin Wade, a former Texas Longhorn Quarterback who walks away from football after his father dies and comes back for redemption... as he sets out to get drafted by the nfl…
And some execs come knocking to give you the opportunity of a life time to join their reality show longshot to get you out into the public eye, get coached by a legend and increase your shot of getting drafted
I personally have no interest in football period… but I loved practically every moment of this campaign
There is a dash of gameplay here but for the most part youll be making dialog choices improving or decreasing your standings in the eyes of nfl scouts.. As anything you do or say can perceive how the public sees you…
though your choices in the game are a bit of an illusion... your standings are effected… but the game still sets out to tell you its story with minor tweaks based off of what you choose, wit h3 alternate endings based on these choices and your in game performance…
These are the parts, surpsise.. I didn’t like that much…
There are multiple choices questions and quick time events to boost your performance and iq score…
which I didn’t mind too much, but every once in a while you’re thrown into a game to come back from an upset, or sometimes just throw down on the field with different rules tied to runs, passes, and downs…
thankfully the game does a great job at helping football noobs like myself understand what to do, spoon feeding your scenarios before you have to actually play a little bit…
and how you do in these moments effect your chances of getting drafted..
These moments are enjoyable and a nice break from the story...
But they aren’t deep and I can understand madden fans being disappointed with the story…
But as a game for everyone as it claims... I was completely fine with how little playing you actually end up doing here…
I sorta started to get the feel of being a star quarterback…
but the system even with its arcade feel never quite clicked with me…
I had a hard time throwing the ball to the right person without that person then just dropping…
and playing defense I was just awful locking myself in defense stances... I still managed to get through these sections and get lucky a few times to come out on top boosting my scores...
The story here though, the characters, the writing, the comedic moments, the ups the downs, its all great..
Its compelling from start to finish
everyone has a bit of charm to them, from your best friend, to the slimy producer
I enjoyed the entire supporting cast...
This really was a great experience…
Is Madden 18 worth picking up just for this touching story mode though?
    I believe so.
And luckily for you if you’re a fan of storytelling but not so much football... sports games end up in the bargin bin way quick... so if oyu see a sale snatch it up..
But hopefully EA wises up and releases this as a standalone
I give Madden NFL 18’s Longshot

    - beating your friends online is fun
    - gotta use strategy and planning
    - don't care about MUT

    cons:

One with customizable characters and positions. It is not that. Longshot is one of the worst things I have ever played. The characters are shallow, the voice acting is horrendous, and the story is comparable to a diabetic dog turd. In the game mode you never actually play any football. It is all quick time events and stupid trivia. Devin Wade, the main character, is not likable at all. All of the surrounding characters are incredibly annoying, especially the shows producer. Every time that cretin talks I grimace. Longshot is an abysmal attempt at a deep, story driven game mode. Don't play Longshot. If it wasn't for that awful game mode I would have given the game a 10 because rating it a 9.5 is not possible on this website.

I am over half way through the mode and have played two games so far. The rest of the time you essentially watch a movie and you have to press the button quickly on quick time events. The worst part of this mode is you don't even actually make it to the NFL. Really EA? You don't even get to the NFL? So disappointing. And then there is CFM. I am a huge Franchise guy and I love taking my team from nothing to the Super Bowl. That is the primary reason I have purchased every Madden every year since Madden 2003. But the only new addition to CFM this year has been a draft board. I like the draft board, but how is it that the Madden community is still pining for features that we had over TEN YEARS AGO???!!! This is ridiculous! My hope is that this year they were unable to make a bunch of changes because they were forced to switch over to the FrostBite engine and they were forced to put in a story mode, so hopefully next year we can see a bunch of the improvements we want to see. This is one of the worst Maddens in recent years for Franchise mode. Please keep in mind I only play franchise mode offline, so my review is tailored to that. PS4 Pro is my console.

-The new Frostbyte engine sucks. To, me I can really only tell a difference in the lighting, not much else. In exchange for that, we get MAJOR performance issues, and again this is on the PS4 Pro. The game will randomly freeze for a few seconds during a play, which is game-breaking to me. Needs hotifixing immediately. This happens fairly often and is very frustrating.

-The Frostbyte engine may also be responsible for funky animations this year. I'm encountering more scenarios this year where what happened on the field does not match what happened under the hood.

-Not much new in Franchise mode this year. Some minor things like auto-scouting college prospects and regression have been added back. Owner mode is in dire need of an update. For example, the Bears have a trainer whose regression trait is "bad". Why wouldn't I fire him immediately like in the real NFL? Why are there no coaches other than head coach? Why is the owner mode the same as it has been for 15 years, whereas NBA 2k owner mode is much more robust?

-Even more commentary said out of context than last year. I'm not sure if the move to the new engine caused this or what. Not very much new commentary either.

-No notification in game who was injured. Commentators oblivious to this. Injury notifaction has been in past Maddens, not sure why it's not it's not implemented in this year's version.

-Halftime show/post game wrap up is still poor compared to 2K sports games and real NFL broadcasts.

-Legacy bugs were not fixed, like your depth chart rearranging from the the splash screen still does not stick.

-Run game is undertuned on the inside and off tackle. Over-tuned run plays on the outside for some plays, broken on others (again). I don't know if this is because the game expects you to use more play maker moves and less follow your blocks or what, but it doesn't feel good unless I use only "cheese" runs with base slider settings.

    The good:

-Kicking/Punting has been made harder this year. If you go outside the limits of the meter, expect an auto-shank at 50+ yards, a needed change.

-Pass interference is called at a more realistic rate, while holding and illegal block in the back calls are slightly less frequent.

-Away from the ball injuries are now actually possible in game and do happen, just like standard injuries.

-QB accuracy has been reduced on the medium-low end. I was playing as the Bears rookie QB and 1/4 passes were just complete ducks that were uncatchable balls, some lead to interceptions. More RNG interceptions are not fun, especially since you have limited control over it. Granted, the animations are quite over-exaggerated so it makes your QB look like a wild-armed pitcher sometimes.

-Still a solid game of football and the only NFL one out there.

I want to move a team and design every aspect of the move I want to design a stadium. I want chemistry to effect team play. The draft is still good but you nailed that last year. We do this song and dance every year. Little by little you add features that were in previous seasons iterations and by the end of a console's life cycle it's a fully fleshed out game. Meanwhile, on the new console it's like a demo offered at full price with slightly better graphics. I've bought the last 3 copies of Madden consecutively and I'm going to have to take pause before I buy another, some changes need to be addressed with Career Mode because it's becoming fairly stagnant at this point. Usually, we can't stop playing when the new edition is released but this year's edition feels half-finished, with lots of bugs and way too many gameplay issues for me to list. The biggest problem is that it just feels like last years game, with the addition of Long Shot (which I thought was ok). The whole "improved presentation" thing is good for trailers but adding some templated team entrances and wide shots of stadiums isn't enough. There's no real leap forward this year, nothing to make loyal players think "yeah I spent £50 on something worthwhile". All of the presentation issues can be forgiven had they revamped the tired Franchise Mode and improved on the gameplay, but instead, EA has regressed in both areas. Sadly I think my love for Madden has ended. Expand

She was pretty hot, and I felt cool showing up to dances and parties with her. The problem was I was getting bored, and I wanted to get out of town after school to experience life. She never really did anything wrong, but she didn’t get my sense of humor, and she just wanted to stay safe, she wasn’t adventurous or particularly ambitious. So I started to be a little bit mean to her and complain about her flaws but of course as is the case with most of us she couldn’t fix them.
The summer after we graduated I told her I wanted to take a “break” while I went on a road trip to see the coast before going to college. When I got back, I found out she had been working out hard all summer (I said she was getting thick during the mean phase). She was looking amazingly great, and she had covered my bed with little presents and put a couple twelve packs of Miller High Life (my beer of choice then don’t judge) under my bed. So once again I felt obliged to go out with her, at first it was cool, spending my last couple weeks in town showing off how good my girl looked. The problem was that it was just more of the same, sure getting little presents was nice, and her attempts to keep me were admirable, but she just couldn’t understand that I wanted a more intellectually stimulating relationship. So despite severe heartbreak and a storm of small town rumor mill hassle, I broke it off with her.
Madden 18 is my high school cheerleader girlfriend, after last year I said I need a break. However, the end of summer rolled around and like the football player is supposed to date the cheerleader, the football fan is supposed to play Madden. The game is smoking hot, until you realize that the complaints just hurt their feelings but didn’t enact change. EA just watched MTV and saw what other girls/games did to keep their boyfriends and mimicked it. They didn’t do anything exactly wrong, but they just didn’t understand that we are at the point where we want something more intellectually stimulating. We want our complaints to induce real change not motivate a purchase of more make-up.
Madden 18 is beautiful, but you will feel de ja vu and a sense of displeasure when you open CFM. My girl gave me a big box of sour patch kids EA gave us a draft board. Time for a break.

BTW be careful what you wish for, I wanted a girl who could make me laugh, now all I get from my wife are jokes about my bald spot, my limp and the time I did a S*&* job launching the boat.

    2. The game play is MUCH smoother. What I mean by "smoother" is, in Madden 17 I felt completely out of control when running the ball. This year the players seem a little more.... "grounded" if you will. Jukes are much more effective with scat backs (no more coming to a complete stop prior to throwing a joke), and trucking/stiff arms with bigger backs actually works against DBs/smaller defenders.

    3. The 3v3 MUT is sick. I love playing DB in career mode, but it gets a little tedious because the CPU doesn't make mistakes (such as throwing into double coverage), so playing against a user controlled QB is refreshing.

    4. AI blocking is better. Not perfect, but better.

    CONS:

Before I begin, I wanted to point out (in my humble opinion) it doesn’t matter how good the graphics are, how much effort you put into MUT for financial gain, how the CFM wasn’t even touched (even though YOUR WHOLE ENTIRE FAN BASE WANTED THIS ADDRESSED!!!)), how bad the commentary is, how the players still look like drunk rag dolls in the middle of an epileptic seizure, I could forgive these flaws…… as long as the game play is realistic. After all, that is why we purchase the game, correct? With that being said, here we go:

1.This year, EA insists that ratings actually matter, so I put their theory to the test. I conducted a fantasy draft with two separate teams.

For team A, I drafted of all (rated) 90+ defensive lineman, and for team B I drafted all 60-70’s (rated) offensive lineman. For team A, also I drafted highly rated linebackers (Hightower with a 91 overall rating, Levonte David at OLB), and for team B I drafted a mediocre RB/TE/FB combo (I believe it was Kareem Hunt).

In theory, team A should win in the trenches every...single...time.

The very first game (everything was CPU controlled, so "user timing" did not play a factor in the outcome) I watched Von Miller (who I changed to a DE) get COMPLETELY blown off the ball on a running play and pushed 10 yards down the field …….by Coby Fleener.

Mind you, this was simulation mode, where individual ratings are supposed to matter (the ONLY game mode where ratings are paramount to user skill). Von Miller has (don't quote me on the exact ratings) a 97 block shedding rating, 95-97 finesses moves rating, etc. So why in the hell is Coby Fleener, a pass catching tight end with a 50 something run blocking rating, blowing up the MVP and driving him 10 yards down the field?

Kareem Hunt ended the game with (I kid you not) 140 rushing yards on 17 carries. As a reminder, he was running against a defensive line with all 90+ ratings (as well as linebackers with 85-90 ratings) behind an offensive line with 60-70 ratings.

So, unfortunately ratings do not seem to matter. I am hoping this gets patched, fixed with sliders, but to me it seems like another broken promise from EA.

    2. DL/OL interaction is so slow. My lord it's frustrating at times. Good luck trying to get your DT to make a tackle behind the line of scrimmage. As a result, there is a positive running play on almost every single carry (a complete 180 from last year's running game, which was almost too difficult).

    3. Subpar QBs are still throwing dimes off their back foot. This goes back to bullet point #1, do ratings really matter?

    4. The CPU AI is useless, you can throw slants against their defense all game and they won't adapt. Non-user controlled players wander around the field with no purpose (especially on defense, where I've seen DBs run away from their coverage WHILE THE BALL IS IN THE AIR, defensive lineman diving at absolutely nothing..taking themselves out of the play, etc).

I'd recommend watching RyanMoody21's Youtube Channel. He breaks down a tremendous amount of flaws in this year's game.

I will say this, people are catching on. Trust me fellas, there will be a point in our lifetime where another company makes a legitimate football game, because year after year EA has shown they aren't capable of doing so.

It's hilarious and almost sad to see just how complacent Tiburon is with mediocrity.

Practice is sooo in creditable dull whoever designed that shouldn't be allowed back in planning any aspects of the game and this is why I miss 2k making NFL games. The gameplay isn't "bad" but it's far from great I think what saves it is the graphics and switching to a new engine made it feel lifelike and it felt like I was watching somewhat of an actual game, but that's the thing I felt like I was watching a game and not playing a game I didn't feel as involved. Commentary "was" great until the 8th game in and started getting a lot of repeat scripts and it was getting annoying quick. I could go on but yeah. Not gonna be buying the new Madden probably it's a shame to cause I would have loved to play it on PC. but yeah bring back 2k to the NFL this is becoming a joke. Expand

If you enjoy throwing money at MUT you will enjoy this years Madden. If you enjoy playing franchise mode with friends, stay with a previous year. Why? Because nothing of merit has changed from '16. There are game crashing bugs with cameras that have a mind of their own. Please note, none of these issues are present on the pay-to-win MUT mode.

Worst Madden in the last 10 years:

    - The gameplay is glitching and has framerate issues (even in offline modes). - On the All-Madden setting the CPU isn't smarter, it just screws you over more. - Running the football is a joke. CPU defenders stick to RBs like magnets even when they're already engaged in a block
    - FG and XP simulation is about a 60% success rate
    - The new mode "Longshot" is mostly cut scenes. After sitting through the entire "story" you can't even play as the character in the NFL!!! What a waste of time.

Stop supporting this excuse for a franchise. Hopefully 2K gets the rights to the NFL in the future. Until then, just keep the old Madden and download the new rosters from the community.

I play exclusively franchise mode and on allmadden difficulty. I have tried both simulation and competitive and I dont notice a difference. If you love seeing all of your players get hurt, commiting obscene amounts of turnovers, and watching broken tackles from guys who have no business breaking tackles, than youll love this game. If youve ever played madden or actual football before get ready to buy 2 more controllers and possibly a new tv. The computer cheats more in this madden than in any other year. The disparity between the computer ai and the user team ai is so large its impossible to be fun. All pro is simply too easy and All madden has lost any concept of entertainment. One of your players is hurt every 4 plays. This is true on both competitive and simulation. The sheer amount of shoestring and 1 yard shy tackles is enough to pull your hair out. The designers have clearly never played or watched a football game and they are simply altering the script that already exists. I find it difficult to go a full game without losing a crucial player for an extended amount of time or turning the ball over less than 4 times. What is fun for me is getting as many players into the pro bowl or breaking records as I can. If I see another defender with his back to the ball make the play or see cole beasley break multiple tackles for a td again, or witness the cpu quarterback sprint to the right under duress and heave the ball across his body for a huge gain Im driving to EA headquarters for an explanation. The Madden series is iconic in the world of sports gaming. Regardless of your reason for playing, you can't go wrong with Madden NFL 18 because it's the ultimate NFL simulation experience on the market. This year's iteration brings dramatic changes in the form of an interactive movie, but there's something here for everyone, whether the interest is in MyTeam, online play, the MUT system, the competitive scene and community, or the superstar career mode.

Madden 18 is the best installment of the series in the last years. Very solid and with stunning graphics thanks to the Frostbite engine. Great both for the veterans of the genre and for the newcomers.

This year in Madden they really stepped up their game, ‘Long Shot’ is one of the best things Madden players have seen in a while, and many players wanted it. ‘Long Shot’ had its many faults but going forward in the next few Madden’s the Career Mode will get better and it will be more interesting. Lovers of Madden should get this game because it has many new additions. If you haven’t got a Madden in a while it’s a good idea to get this one. But all together, Madden 18 is a good game with many new perks, and it’s headed in the right direction.
