One should not feel obliged to buy it since Rockstar has their stamp over it. Not at all.
Back then i was a tad bit disappointed on the games overall content then as i still am now. I solely bought it again cheaply for nostalgic reasons (and boredom... and because i love the 50´s era L.A.)

I found it weird why Rockstar would brush it up and release it again. Team Bondi shut down a while ago after creative differences and the reports of awful working conditions under McNamara direction. The only reason i can think of is that Rockstar must have future plans for this I.P. and i hope they do. A full hands on by Rockstar for a L.A Noire 2 would be very welcome. Not only is there TONS of pentional to dig into, it would for once be a good change being the Good guy in a Rockstar title and not some gangbanger or rootin' tootin' cowboy outlaw. For once it would be a fun play to actually BE the law.

Because you see, this game here had so much lacking for a fully working and fulfilling title. You have little time to go around exploring the city., and even if you had time, it would be a little boring. because:
1: the Map is aesthetically beautiful, but is messy, and little memorable made. Much area unseen and unused.Nothing stands out. Just suburb after suburb. Every GTA map you know by heart after a few hours gameplay, this one you dont. Its large but you dont really know where you are most at the time.
2: It has nothing of of interest to explore. It´s a pretty much lifeless world.
This game only have what its going for it during its episodic gameplay. and that is it.

If Rockstar were to make a sequel (Damn i hope i they do) They would made quite a rich world and experience-filled with tons of content, drama, noire and mystery that would have me drool all over it.
Because let's face it. They are the master of open world game creation. And they would waltz over Team Bondis effort for their own ideas.

This game has lots of flaws. A good driving story, but it tend to become quite repetitive if you were to binge this game straight through. Bring on L.A Noire 2 Rockstar, i dare you...

One of the best, most engrossing, intelligent, well acted, story focused games ever made, now ported for PS4, starring one of the guys from Mad Men; this is a classic, full of mysteries and detective work, and it comes with all of the downloadable content made for the original.

I'm a huge fan of film noir, particularly movies such as The Big Sleep, Double Indemnity, Sunset Boulevard etc. The game harkens back to the late 1940s Los Angeles era. You can imagine my excitement when the game first came out years ago. I partially completed the PS3 version before my PS3 got the YLOD.

Anyway, the PS4 version of the game feels MORE of a port than a remaster.

You can imagine my excitement when the game first came out years ago. I partially completed the PS3 version before my PS3 got the YLOD.

Anyway, the PS4 version of the game feels MORE of a port than a remaster. There's a few touch ups here and there and they've changed the questioning wording to make it seem more consistent.

    I'll start with the pros:

    - Fantastic storyline. Except GTAV, I don't think I've played a game with an engrossing storyline like this.
-Free Bonus content. I.e...More suits and more cases. They were previously DLC.
-The facial animation is very good...albeit slightly dated.
-The Los Angeles in 1947 has been mostly faithfully recreated. It's fun driving around and seeing the familiar landmarks as they were back then.
-Great cases, if you're a movie buff like me, you'll be able to pick up on certain references. I'll not spoil them here.

    Now the cons...
-The Graphics. I was expecting much more out of this game. It's been advertised as a remaster. I think this is deceiving. Although the graphics are good, it's made even more dated on a PS4. The draw distance/pop ins are abysmal. Often when I'm driving and taking in the scenery, I can't help but notice trees and buildings mysteriously popping in as I'm approaching. This makes the game less immersive.
The facial animation is good...still dated none the less and at times faces can look as if they're melted!
-The gameplay. The city of Los Angeles is huge. You get to do alot of driving, like in GTAV. But the problem is...the city is dead. Outside of the cases, there's not much to do in the city. There's no interaction at all. No proper side missions. No interaction with the people. The city itself serves as a backdrop for the cases...nothing more.

At times it feels like an on rails shooter. There's no choice at all. The game is pretty much holding your hand, assisting you as you play, and directing you. You simply cannot lose.

    TLDR;
    Pros: The storyline, The Cases
Cons: The restrictive gameplay, The dated Graphics which makes it feel like a port.

The game is on a continuous loop of: Go to the crime scene, gather evidence, go to their residence/ the residence of someone who is connected with them, Interview them, and get more evidence. Rinse and repeat until you find your guy. Every single case is like the last, which is disappointing as there is so much potential for an action packed game of police shootouts and epic cases, but instead you get something more on par with a police simulator, Which is okay if that`s what you like and want but the thing about realistic policework is that it`s boring and isn`t very exciting. Starting this game I was expecting to be leaping onto the roof of a train or to be dangling off a building within the first hour of gameplay but instead I got a boring police sim. I ended up enjoying the random crimes more than I liked the actual game. The aesthetic of the 1940`s is cool although doesn`t add too much to the game. The map is incredibly boring and I constantly felt lost, it barely has any notable landmarks to discern where you are. The map looks the same wherever you are causing you to get lost and over rely on the in game minimap. This makes it so I barely explore and only go to where the story makes me go. Add the fact that there is nothing to do except the random crimes. No stunt jumps, no side missions, nothing. This is a far cry from Rockstar`s other titles. Also, I didn`t feel connected to the protagonist. The only person I connected with was one of Cole`s (the protagonist) partners, Rusty Galloway. And then.. I get promoted and never see him again. All in all L.A. Noire is an okay game, but incredibly boring and repetitive. It`s mediocre when compared to other video games but when it`s compared to Rockstar`s other games… it`s really bad Expand

This is my 4th favorite Rockstar game, just behind both Red Dead Redemption and GTA V. A game that brings a whole new perspective to the open world genre.

Differently what says many YouTubers gamers and video game media, open world games that take place in representations of real cities are quite rare. A kind of game known as "GTA like". This is one of the few ones and definitely one of the best, once it requires very little shooting mechanics that flood other games like that.

Here it is necessary to investigate crimes, analyzing crime scenes, their victims, collecting evidences and proofs, then interrogating and making decisions whether suspects are guilty or not. Much of the game does not require a precision gameplay, frenetic combat or solving puzzles with objects like keys, medallions etc. The requirement is a lot of analysis, thinking, intuition and even luck. The crimes are very difficult to be solved in the right way and sometimes it doesn't even make sense. But the atmosphere created on it is absolutely incredible.

1940' s Los Angeles is by far one of the most beautiful cities recreated in video games. Unlike the Mafia series, which is set in similar period but focuses a lot on fictional cities, shootings and action, in L.A. Noire contemplating the city is part of the whole experience.

The plot is wonderful, worthy of the best films of the genre. The construction of the characters, their motivations, their desires, their successes and their failures, everything pretty plausible and with an excellent narrative slow paced. Since it does not take place in a fantasy world, the story takes on a giant importance within the game, being essential for a great complete experience.

I always think that this is the great advantage of games that are based in real world over those of fantasy world. The story holds you more, shows itself more real, raw, failure characters and, in my opinion, much more immersive, since it is much more reliable to put yourself as the characters than to imagine yourself as a wizard, a demigod or a superhero. And I think, this is where L.A. Noire stands as one of the industry's great masterpieces.

    -------------------------------
    In Brazilian Portuguse:

E, penso, é aí onde L.A.

I also really enjoyed the homicide department mission case, and was disappointed that is was an inclusive story that was ended when it concluded. I didn't care much about the last two stories compared to the homicide section of the game. I was also disappointed the homicide case was not linked to the main story. Overall it is a fun game that I am glad I have played and completed, but towards the end I felt nothing was new and I was simply playing it to get to the end, rather than enjoying it fully like I had done before.

If we are talking about all technical constituents they are not the best in L. A. Noire, We have bad graphic for the 2017 year (and terrible for 2020), we have bad driving in the game, not the best shooting, and awful fighting system. But all this parts of gameplay are just additions to the main part - search for evidence and interrogation of suspects.

This main part of the game not so good too, the evidences are often obvious and the interrogation sometimes have so illogical exodus, what make getting 5 stars for this case impossible. But even with all this troubles this experiment was great enough for me. I have played this game 2 times on PC, and now on PS4, and i'd like to play this one or two times more in the future.

So, if we take this sort of experiment, good story and dialogues from Rockstar - this is enough to get this game 8 of 10 for me, the fan of this studio.

P.S. Also, I realized for myself that this is an attempt by Roskstar to make its version of the Mafia, while with its bias in the work of a policeman, but preserving the surroundings of that era.

Revisiting L.A. Noir years after release proved that it was a title that stands out in the open world crowd. But hardly stands the test of time due to the rough edges that stick out more so than ever.

Even with the upresed graphics, the visuals still embody to the X-box 360 era. For it's time it is still very impressive for an open world game. However, that open world even though looking the part, still feels empty and lifeless for the most part. Again, for it's time, the facial animations are unique but feel a little off compared to what you would see in the likes of recent Rockstar games. The stand out of the presentation sure is in the sound department. From the music to the stellar voice acting, it all feels right in place for the stories time period.

The story is engaging for the most part from case to case, acted beautifully by a all-star cast. But falls apart toward the final acts, moving away from detective work to more action orientated scenarios.

What really holds this game back from being a all time classic is the game-play itself. The gun play is good, while the driving is extremely clunky. The open world feels barren with little to do in the ways of finding additional fun. But most of all, the investigating features (while novel) still feel a little unpolished. It is fun searching around a crime scene for clues, but there doesn't seem to be definitive rules as to how to interrogate a suspect. The facial expressions that are key to exposing a suspect, don't seem to be consistent in regards to how you treat each person from case to case.

It was fun for the most part to come back to a title that tried to add something different to the open world genre. But due to it's un-intuitive game design, it holds very little replay value. Even with it's short falls, this is a fine game and you will be hard pressed to find another like it. So without a doubt it is worth the time for new comers or those who want to jump back into a detectives shoes.

Didn’t play the PS3 version. Enjoyed playing the PS4 version & the storyline was interesting to follow. Getting 5 star ratings without a guide was very difficult but I enjoyed the game overall.

I came to play this game because I was looking for another detective game to play after Sherlock Holmes. I did a thorough search before I decided to go for this game. I’m a stubborn bastard so I spent about 20h on the game although being ready to faint of boredom after 1.. this game is all about the looks and has nothing more to it. The investigations aren’t intriguing, finding evidence is simple but also, walking around apartments to find things just takes time and feels boring. Everything about this game rely on you not to use your brain, just your luck.
The only time you actually do have something to think about is in the interviews with suspects, and this is so random. You have three theme responses to choose from, but they tell you absolutely nothing about what your character is actually gonna say and that could be just about anything stupid. If this situation would truly gonna be choice-based you need to know WHAT, because this guy is not staying to the script. ****** ****, this makes me so angry. Also the detective you play is just a normal, boring guy with problems to tune in when he talks to people, why is he this stiff without having ANY OTHER LIKEABLE SIDES!? I hated driving around, nothing particular to look at, I was so thankful that the partner could drive almost all the time to skip. You can choose to search secret locations for cars and drive them but then they’d suddenly disappear!? and you’d be back in your partners old car, why should I even look for them if I can’t keep them!? And then, when you arrive to locations you get to walk like five meters and then the system takes over again because a conversation starts, just place me in the conversation already!? Actually I did enjoy one thing, in some cases there’s a newspaper to look at that shows parts of a story, smart. All in all, this game sucks.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game I’m giving a 7/10.

I mean, the story is fun and really well put together. Detective Cole is a strange person, clearly without any emotion. He’s a psychopath, but a good one (if that makes any sense). Then there’s Jack Kelso, which I absolutely loved. He’s kind of a cocky guy, and the way he call girls “princess” is just legendary.
I really wished there was more cases with Jack. They should make a game focusing on his story, maybe even his earlier time as an investigator at California Fire and Life.

This game is fun, and I love the the puzzle gameplay where you have to find clues and the questioning of different kind of peoples.

This is a remastered version of a PS3 game.
I think Rockstar has done an amazing job on the cars, the environment and the characters in 3rd person. However I was pretty disappointed by the characters faces during interviews and the cinematic.
Would expected that to be remastered better.

However, all in all a great game, and I definitely think it’s worth gaming.

A masterpiece of storytelling that excels at recreating of the atmosphere of post war America, the rebound of American economy, Red Scare and organized crime underworld. Features many tropes from noir movies of that era. Graphics hold up surprisingly well in 2023. LA Noire remaster hit us out of nowhere and brings a nice high definition version of the game to our consoles. Unfortunately, it doesn’t bring many fixes with it, nor does it expand on the huge city they’ve built.

Even with a new coat of graphical paint, L.A. Noire remains a game that adds up to less than the sum of its parts.
