    Jagged Alliance: Rage! is a mobile game dressed like a PC game. Simply, is not a Jagged Alliance.

    It's not exactly a crime against humanity, but Jagged Alliance: Rage! fails to convince in any significant way. The main culprits are the lacklustre sound design, the awful graphics and the utter usefulness of the online co-op feature. Skip it.

    This game, frankly is pretty horrible and mainly down to the appalling PS4 port. There's also some game breaking bugs. I've almost finished it and spent a lot of hours, I feel well placed to weigh up the pros and cons.

    I've seen loose comparisons with games like Xcom purely because it's a turn based strategy with guns. It plays nothing like it in reality. A much better comparison would be to describe it as a cross between Valkyria Chronicles and This War is Mine (one of my favourite Indy games). The game play is like the former and survival aspect the latter. The basis for a good game is here but the execution is poor and the port lazy.

    Firstly, two big issues with the game are a) the lack of information on how to play the game and game mechanics and b) inventory management on the PS4 port.

    On your playthrough you were given a short tutorial mission which shows you how some basic aspects of the game work. The problem is, some absolutely crucial aspects are shown to you once, never to be seen or accessed ever again. For example, at one point during the game it explains that 'night time' is 18:00-05:00. I thought, ok thanks. A few days later when I put the game on, naturally I didn't remember the exact times. It turns out that missions during night are essential to a stealth playthrough like mine. But there way no way to tell whatsoever, short of going in the mission via trial and error. This is one of many examples that can wreck your playthrough. Nobody sits there with a pen and paper noting what seem like close to irrelevant information at the time. Or trying to remember which button increases shot accuracy etc.

    Then inventory management. Dear Lord, in all my time gaming I've never come across such a monotonous system. I imagine this isn't too bad on PC. But on Ps4 just awful. Just attempting to explain why it's bad sends shivers down my spine so I'll just leave it at 'it's awful'. I literally spend around the same amount of time after a mission going through inventory as I do completing the mission. It makes this boring and a massive chore.

    Then the bugs. Any fan of turn games know that they're often buggy. Yes, I've seen many a soldier die on Xcom due to bugs. In this game I've come across 3 game breakers. The first, on PS4 on average once a mission, when I attempt to save the game crashes. I've come to realise this is linked to autosave, but I can't be much more precise than that. It seems when trying to save shortly after the game has autosaved results in a much higher proportion of the bug happening. The first time it happened I lost almost an entire mission and hours of game play. From then on, I save almost every few turns if action happens. It also happens during inventory management at the end of the mission. So I end up saving several times as I'm going through things.

    The second, when upgrading armour to carry extra invoice slots, this causes some kind of black hole in the extra slots. The first time it happened one of my characters lost their best gun. I couldn't figure out what had happened and spent about an hour searching the map before I gave up. I figured out it was the armour upgrade when it happened a second time.

    Third, the classic 'people shooting through buildings' bug. I go into a building, ensure there's no line of sight between my soldier and enemy. What happens on their turn? Of course they kill him without moving their position, shooting through a building. Almost cost me the mission.

    The gameplay generally isn't too bad, although it's very frustrating that an enemies vision doesn't appear consistent on their turn. It's really difficult to figure out whether they'll see you on their turn. Judging distance is challenging.

    The repetition of every soldier saying exactly the same thing each turn can drive you insane. I hear 'the shadow is ready' and 'I was born ready' in my sleep.

    There are some good things though. I like that you can increase your shot accuracy by spending more action points. There's lots of choice of weapons and I like that different soldiers have different specialisms. The survival aspect is done really well. Such a shame then, that they don't take any time to explain the mechanics of things like infections, fever etc, when they occur and precisely how to counter them. All of this you have to figure out for yourself.

    Despite all the cons I have enjoyed playing the game, although due to the amount of chore experienced while playing, this has put my in a position where I might not be bothered to finish it.

    I'd only recommend playing this if you absolutely love the genre as I do. Even then, you may find my unworthy of your time. I feel like on PC it would play much better, so if you have both I'd definitely recommend playing on the latter.    … Full Review »
