    I want to start by saying that I'm an anime fan and have seen at least a few episodes of most of the animes represented in this game. Now I'm not much of a fighting game fan and I only bought this game because it was anime related and on sale for like $12 on PSN. How could I go wrong?

    The truth is I wasn't wrong. This is a decent (albeit repetitive) game.     The truth is I wasn't wrong. This is a decent (albeit repetitive) game. I wasn't expecting much from this game but I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Each character is unique and true to their anime counterparts in their attacks / special attacks. It'd be cool if they added in extra outfits for each character though rather than just having their original gear. There's a pretty decent number of stages ranging from large to small but none were necessarily great or all that terrible. There are also a lot of characters to choose from as well which is awesome.

    This is definitely a fan service game for those of you that love both Shonen Jump animes / mangas and 3D fighting games. If like you like one (like me) or both then definitely check this game out as I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Especially for those of you that think your Shonen Jump character is better than all others but your friend thinks otherwise, then you can fight to prove it! For those that aren't complete fans of both though get it if it's cheap / on sale like I did. I wouldn't recommend buying it if it cost more than $25-$30 max if that's the case.

    With all this however can J-Stars Victory VS+ stand tall without simply being a manga and anime fans dream of a battle royale and offer a solid fighting experience? Having spent a number for hours with J-Stars Victory VS+ on PlayStation 4, it is time to find out.

    There are a number of game modes available in J-Stars Victory VS+ include J-Adventure, the single player story mode; Victory Road, another single player mode where players fight through predetermined objects within fights; Arcade Mode, for challenging fights back to back; Free Battle and Online Battle for quick access to fights for two player local and four player online action.

    Additionally there is a customise and shop section as well for unlocking further characters and items within the adventure mode and your J-Deck. The J-Deck is simply a mini game like mode where you place cards to buff your character in adventure mode. The adventure mode is where your spend most of your time as you pick one of four sets of character to play through the Jump world to partake in the J Battle Festival. The chapter you pick will set who your main characters are for the whole adventure.

    Though the Adventure Mode is a lot of fun as you take your party sailing around the world map battling foes and completing quests, it becomes rather old very quick. There is a lot of filler in the Adventure Mode which really does not need to be there. I personally felt no need to play and finish the remaining three adventures just out of frustration with the filler.

    J-Stars Victory VS+ truly is a dream for manga and anime fans giving you plenty of choice to build the ultimate team. It is a shame then that with all these characters that J-Stars Victory VS+ falls short on its gameplay offering

    For an example let me break down a standard fight against the AI for you. I mained as Luffy in the Adventure Mode as said before, and with him each fight is simple. Mash out a weak combo landing a good number of hits, closing and using a standard special for even more damage, refill my stamina and then repeat. If I then switch to say Medaka Kurokami from Medaka Box, it is again the same method of fighting. Mash out a weak combo with a few strong hits to break their guard and then unleash a few special attacks with one or two button presses. Unleashing your ultimate attack is not much better as you simply deal out enough damage to fill your victory burst meter, hit a button to enter the burst mode and then hit yet again, one more button press to deal massive damage

    In short, though the fighting system is solid and robust it is a very simple system at that which can sometimes leave you wanting more. Just make sure you learn how to guard and counter otherwise your be hit with long, inescapable combos.

    That being said J-Stars Victory VS+ is a good game, maybe even great. I think the best way to explain the game however is to simply say that it is subjective game in that if you’re able to overlook some small faults the game is stunning and solid. I personally enjoy the game even if I can only play in small bursts on the single player. Get a friend in and you’re sure to have a great time as you beat each other up with over the top attacks.

    Regardless, J-Stars Victory VS+ is a game worth your time even if it is not the most ground breaking fighting game out there. A few small faults make it fall short of being a great game.    … Expand

    Great game for manga fans. Many different characters to play as satisfyingly fun combat different than most fighting games. Offers a ton of content but will have go be played extensively if you want to unlock everything. It's a very fun addicting arena battle game, if you're a fan of shonen Jump manga like naruto, bleach or dbz or if you just want a fun unique fighting game different thanGreat game for manga fans. Many different characters to play as satisfyingly fun combat different than most fighting games. Offers a ton of content but will have go be played extensively if you want to unlock everything.     i liked the characters, they have vastly differences in some cases, also the scenarios are variable, and you are force to change the character to have better chance to win, the specials attacks do not work all the time and are difficult to execute, sometimes the union from two characters are complementary for their fights.

    J-Stars Victory VS + is a larger than life, over the top, arena-battling, special move extravaganza that has finally reached us in the West after being out for over a year in Japan. The previous version was released on the PlayStation 3 and the Vita, while this will be the first to grace the PS4. The release also coincides with the 45th anniversary of the “Shonen JUMP” magazine and theJ-Stars Victory VS + is a larger than life, over the top, arena-battling, special move extravaganza that has finally reached us in the West after being out for over a year in Japan. The previous version was released on the PlayStation 3 and the Vita, while this will be the first to grace the PS4. The release also coincides with the 45th anniversary of the “Shonen JUMP” magazine and the 20th anniversary of the “V JUMP” magazine. For those uninitiated among us, the JUMP magazine brought us Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, Dragonball Z, Naruto and Bleach. For those of us who love any of these series and characters, you’ve probably already got this penciled in to be added to your collection. After spending a reasonable amount of time with the likes of Yusuke and Gon and Yuffy, let’s just say at this point I’m still to be convinced of its magnificence.

    The Developer, Spike Chunsoft, should be applauded for not just taking the opportunity for an easy cash grab. What you are promised from the beginning is a huge roster of characters to chose from, and that each of them will be bringing their own showcase special moves and frenetic energy to the table. There are a number of modes to keep you playing, too: the story mode itself gives you a choice of four different paths you can follow alone. The Motion Chapter focuses on Luffy, the Hope Chapter on Naruto, the Research Chapter on Toriko and the Pursuit Chapter on Ichigo. You spend your time navigating a three dimensional map using a sailing ship, visiting different areas and worlds that are all parts of the Jump Universe. This is so you can face other fighters and fulfill quests so you can build up your team, with the goal of winning the J-Battle Festival. The story is really just an excuse to show off the 39 playable characters and the 13 support characters available.

    The three dimensional semi cel-shaded glory then erupts into a contained arena, with destructible scenery and one character under your control while the CPU controls everyone else. Support characters can be summoned to deal out additional damage when required and will need time to recharge after their offensive strikes. The action is frantic and breathless at times as you attempt to knock out the other team in order to fill in the victory bar. You have your bread and butter basic attacks to chip energy off your opponents, more powerful attacks that you can string to create impressive combos that will shatter buildings and slice apart giant peppers. Yes, you read that correctly. One of the levels will easily help you achieve your five a day.

    The irony being that, through all its faults, J-Stars Victory VS + has an undeniable charm because of the obvious love of the source material. Taking part in all the mini side quests involving your ship and exploring the land is a decent break from the frantic battles, and the dialogue is often amusing in its own kitsch way. When the battles flow and Naruto is taking names and kicking ass then yeah, I can totally understand the love this game will get.    … Expand

    Played it for a total of 5 hours, and still don't have even half of every character! This game is bound to keep you busy. The arcade mode is hard, and the adventure mode is OK, but everything else is smooth. No characters are clones, and I don't see what other reviews are complaining about it being simple. There's a character that can heal himself, but if you keep missing attacks he'll getPlayed it for a total of 5 hours, and still don't have even half of every character! This game is bound to keep you busy. The arcade mode is hard, and the adventure mode is OK, but everything else is smooth.     This is a solid anime fans dream fighting game. The story mode is fun to play through but not necessary to be played if just wanting to unlock all the characters which you will have to purchase through the in-game money which can be gained by either doing free battles or online battles.

    The fighting mechanics are fun and easy to pick up if your a new fighting game fan but do not come in looking for the same technical fighting systems from games like maybe Tekken or Street Fighter.

    There are enough modes to play between the solid story mode, arcade and then local free battle mode which offline gives great customization to the battle if you were looking for having 1 vs 1 battles with no support or 2nd character AI.

    Online mode is another story though. Currently the game is suffering from a bit of poor netcode which brings almost 10 to 30 seconds of input lag. Then as well you do lose the amount of customization that you had in the offline mode with being able to play 1 vs 1. You have to play with either an AI 2nd Character or just have a full room where its two players on each opposing team. Yet even online though it is an amazing looking game and have rarely had lag be apparent when playing and is lots of fun to play online with others especially with the wide selection of characters to play as and the AI is well done able to actually put up a fight.

    This is an easy game to recommend for those who enjoy anime and looking for an anime fighter considering its roster and solid gameplay that is fun yet simple with each character feeling distinct with their own anime quirks that fit them. If your not into anime or like a more technical fighting game then this may not be for you but the content that is here is very good and highly enjoyable.

    I'm currently only 5 hours in some time put into the online mode and played some of the story mode and still not close to done unlocking everything including the battle characters and support characters.    … Expand

    I don't know what's going on. In fact, I played one or two matches and had to stop because I was so genuinely confused on what was happening. All I know is a bunch of grown men were screaming at me in Japanese, send help.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I hate this game more than ever now. Not much of an update for an American release. No new characters. I always wanted to main Hiei. I always liked Hiei in Yuyu-Hakusho!: Badass character, Badass fighting style, Badass vocie, can't get any better than Gai-shishioh. But what disappoints me the most is: Hiei's moveset was sloppily-made and CLEARLY rushed. His is the only moveset where his ground Squarechain makes him float in the air. And in the original Jstars this square chain would constantly knocked in a couple hits before breezing through the enemy and flying way past them, making the attack useless. his square~triangle, square,square~triangle and Dash square are ALL the same move. a horizontal slash to the left. same reaction hit, identical damage, his dash square just covers some more range on his left and right sides. His neutral circle attack (Ja Ou Ensatsu-ken) was only used ONCE in the show and never used again. why it was added is beyond me. And above all else his special (Ja Ou Ensatsu: Kokuryuu-ha) is the most useless piece of garbage. It has the most fakest juggling and it weak as hell and takes up so much time that you can't do a second special in one victory burst. You can absorb the dragon but to me is also useless consider the so-called enhancements aren't that much from when he takes off his bandages from his R1+X. On the other hand though, Himura Kenshin's moveset is flawless. The onyl character I'm remotely decent with is Vegeta and his normal attacks are as bland as can be. And Namco has yet to add DLC or patches. This game's only redeemign factor is having Kenshin in it. Nothing more nothing less. IT's also insulting that Namco-bandai chose to localize this and not Extreme vs full boost which definitely deserves a localization MORE than this game.… Expand

    The game, over all, is okay. A WONDERFUL idea! Horribly executed! They have so many Shonen characters inthere, but only a few of them are legit playable. For the female gamer who sometimes wishes to play as a female, your choice is Medaka or Hancock. Sure you see Chitoge on the box, but she and many others (like Allen Walker!) are only support characters. In my opinion, another should beThe game, over all, is okay. A WONDERFUL idea!     This game is for shonen jump anime fans only because only us, the fans can look past the game's faults and appreciate it for the masterpiece that it is. There are loads of things to do and the game is super fun.

    This game is good fun and an honest fighting game for anime fans. If you are not a big fan you would waste your money, and maybe your money would be better invested in a naruto game or Dragon ball one, as this one is a mash up of Shonen mangas and anime. Strongly suggest it to all Toriko's fans

    While the gameplay could receive some better improvements for certain, but the character roster is great, with great movesets that properly represents the original Jump characters and their stories, it's also fun to replay once you get used to it.

    This game was actually one of the better anime fighters when you get past the first glance. While the graphics seem a little dated, the gameplay was surprisingly smooth. Most characters have a very unique skill-set and combo potential that is very different from one another so you actually have to learn the character.     Another Bandai Namco fighting game. Fun for local multiplayer but that's about it. The story is slow, boring and feels very dull. Completing the game to 100% took HOURS of mindless, repetitive grinding. You also need to complete the previously mentioned story game 4 times in order to get the platinum. Honestly I would not recommend it unless you don't mind spending tons of hours of yourAnother Bandai Namco fighting game. Fun for local multiplayer but that's about it.     If you’re not arguing with your friends over whether Naruto would beat Goku and you’re not praying for the fourth season of “Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure” there’s absolutely no reason for you to care about this really weak fighting game. [09/2015, p.63]

    Very young and very undemanding fans of shōnen manga may get a fleeting kick out of J-Stars Victory VS+, but there’s too much cheaper (and superior) competition currently available across all platforms to warrant a half-hearted recommendation.
