A jumping around and shooting contest. Nicely done, but completely unimaginative. And an "open world" without anything in it.

Also, there are many ledges in this game that seem climbable but Aloy simply won't grab onto them, which is a huge downside if you just finished playing games like Uncharted or Ghost of Tsushima.

Just played and completed this game, it was a massive struggle to finish

Horizon Zero Dawn, is a decent game. The world is stunning, the world and lore are pretty cool ideas! Even Aloy is a decent heroine. Clearing out zones like bandit camps felt nice, affecting the world in a small way. I unlocked all the map and got all the collectibles before I engaged the 2nd part of the main story that starts in the hub town of Meridian. I think if I had tried to do all the side content before the main story, I wouldn't have been so engaged. The weakest point of Horizon Zero Dawn is how they handle the story. The concepts of the world and what happened to create it are fantastic. The reason the story is happening right now? Terrible. Woefully under explained, and a lot of the story choices felt forced and not organic. The opposite of the world that was built. For a Science Fiction game, I feel like they did not think through a lot of the reasoning and consequences of things that happen in the "present" day of the game. This game would be a 2 or 3 if it were not for the sheer brilliance of the world that was created by the environment and combat teams. Expand

    Issues (I have anyway)
As far as handling goes, there isn't a lot of explanation to guide you, so you have to figure out a lot for yourself. Once you do however, the game does become a lot more enjoyable, I just wish they did more of a how to.
The potion/trap/rock/call your mount situation is messy, don't like it at all, if you are in a battle you might need to scroll through 8 things to get what you require and by that time... you're dead!
Shooting arrows at giant machines, not sure how that would actually work, guess I'm just used to guns!
And my final beef is the jumping... sometimes you can climb a ledge, most of the time you can not.
Even if the rock is lower than a ledge you can grab, if the game says you can't climb it, you go another way.
    Positives.
Story, it's got me hooked and I'm not even finished yet.
Gameplay, it's smooth and not too many issues at all, definitely action packed and plenty to do.
Originality. I started off thinking I'm from another world on a different planet or something but it's not the case and the more I played I realised how closely this resembles and plays a bit like games which I love, Fallout, Ghost of Tsushima and the like, even has some elements of Tomb Raider and that sort of thing.
Worth grabbing, but you need to be patient, or a quicker learner than me!

Aloy's animations are beautiful only when she runs or climbs in certain holds (there are few), while during the dialogues her animations and those of the other NPCs are bordering on shameful.
The story does not involve the player and is easily bored because the animations destroy the realism.
The graphics sector is really very nice, both for the characters and for the environments.

I was disappointed, I was expecting a great exclusive while instead I found myself with a game with beautiful graphics, beautiful gameplay, but terribly superficial in many aspects that undermine the global experience.

It was a very enjoyable game, the story was intriguing and gameplay was decent. The world was well created and felt rewarding to discover new areas. An overall enjoyable game but I didn't feel like I wanted more after completing it.

This is an interest case, being that there are elements of this game I love to death and ones I would like to throw into a pit of fire never to be seen again. This is by no means a bad game, just very confused as to what it would like to be.

Story - In Horizon you play Alloy young girl thrust into a world giant mechanical creature and primitive tribal people who simply seek to survive.

Although concept wise this story and world have a lot going for it Horizon's problem is how lost it becomes in itself. The story, for the most part, feels like something that could be part of a one shot Netflix series that never gets a second season, while the premise and concept of the world are simply amazing. Without getting into any spoilers, the story can basically be boiled down to human nature is pretty **** up/AI's are dangerous. While these ideas on there own aren't horrible jumping off points to build a story off of, Horizons story feels like it was tacked onto the game half way through development when they finally realized Robot dinosaur hunting sim was not going to sell on its own. While its still serviceable, this is a story which doesn't much feel like it has a place in the game it was written for or rather it was jammed in at the last minute due to the behest of a publisher.

Gameplay - On the other hand, the core gameplay of Horizon is incredibly solid. Being a mix between stealth action, open world, and beat 'em up Horizon falls perfect in the middle of all of these taking the elements of more recognized games and and putting a new spin of them. Towers from Assassins Creed are now walking jump quests to unlock areas of the map, Hacking enemies not only gives you an ally in combat, but also a ride across Horizons Massive world! On top of this the combat is a pure joy to engage in and highly rewarding when you learn how to use exploit mechanics like points and elemental damage. However this feeling of joy all too soon drains away after you take down you enemies and you remember that Horizon is an RPG and you must do RPG things now to progress the story. These moments of hinderance serve only to break up what is arguably the best part of the game which is the gameplay in and of itself. However in the grander scheme of things the gameplay is too sparse to really get to enjoy before you finish it.

All in all Horizon is a great game for people who don't normally play videogames. Coming at it with low expectation saves you from enduring its more inconsistent parts while also providing you with enough cover to explain why that Netflix series you been trying to get your friend to watch is actually really good and not overrate like some people say. I'm not projecting you are!

    Gameplay: 8
Story: 5 (Ruined by poor facial animations and overall milque toast narrative)
Enjoyment: 7 (Fun parts are too few and far between, hopefully the sequel solves that)

Haven't finished the game yet, but I have to say that, although the story is nice so far, it takes too long for you to discover more parts of it. In fact, fighting machines is the best part of the game. The context around it just doesn't seem to work all the time for me even tho the story tries to explain why. Mainly because the mix between the modern elements and the ancient elements sometimes are out of balance. Yet this is a game that, despite its shortcomings, continues to hold your attention due to the mysterious story, challenging combat and well-developed main character Aloy.

The models are the best. The best in the history of gamedev. Even ordinary npcs look great here. The first game in which I listened to all the dialogues. Stunning detail of the models. You just sit and examine every centimeter.
It's also the best eye animation I've ever seen in game development. Excellent clothes, even hairstyles.
But the animation is so-so, and the dialogue is even worse. In Frozen Wilds, character animation is much better.

The voice acting in Russian is generally terrible. Most of the actors just mumble without any intonation. You must be fined for this.
The side missions are great. You believe in them. These are not some silly fillers.

Melee is just zero. The game for this can be safely set to 0. Enemies are teleported, it was even that you were transferred under the enemy's hit. In general, the most important mechanic, completely inoperative. 90% of battles are some kind of garbage and chaos.
You use what the enemy cannot approach because of the restriction of his zone, or the fight turns into a beating.
    Many opponents have no weakness.
If the action is indoors or near a rock, then the camera jumps like crazy.

Swimming. How could such a **** swim be done?

    Minus for the worst animation
Digital Foundry praised the animation. Apparently someone gouged out their eyes. This is the worst animation I've ever seen. Everything is twitchy, opponents teleport, she always gets stuck even on 20cm ledges, in dialogues the characters sometimes have seizures. There is no intermediate animation, it switches abruptly. It looks terrible. most of the elements work with crutches. Auto aim and slow motion, only need to aim at twitchy models.

    Minus camera control
The camera always zooms in and covers everything on the screen. The game doesn't need this zoom at all. It would be logical to remove it at least during the jump.

    Minus for gay propaganda
It is obvious that in America there are quotas for the propaganda of minorities. Sony spends a lot of money but still tries to save as much as possible. The main task is to sell the console to sheep, and not to make a quality product. By the quality of the horizon, it is perfectly visible that no one believed in the game except the developer. They obviously did not have time to do everything they wanted.

I was really hoping for me from this game! But for an overall thought the game felt very familiar! I felt like I was playing Far cray primal with hints of assassins creed and tombraider with certain things borrowed from both game types might they only be small things but to me being a gamer I notice them! Like when you upgrade in the skill tree it's the exact same sound as it is in Far Cry Primal, the yellow balance ropes and repel from long necks is the almost the same animations as tombraider and then the climbing animations and rolling to dodge was assassins creed! I'm disappointed in that but otherwise it's a good game but no more then a casual experience and not worth more then a 7!

What makes this game a 7 instead of a 10 is the story. As it progressed, i just did not care or really feel immersed in it. Maybe next time we can play as Sylens? His story sounded more interesting than the main one.

Really love this game, but it can be improved in so many ways. Don't know if someone from Guerilla team read the comments, but anyway I will write what I think.

I want to start from AI, it's literally one of the best, especially on ultra hard.

I do really like the voices, good job, also Russian voice is pretty good too, it's gorgeous, but lack of lip sync, it's just bad, characters continue to speak after the actor stop, you should fix it in future games. Also, main font of Horizon don't support cyrillic, it's you fault, russian letters look just BAD.

The audio, music, battle themes is gorgeous too, best i've heard for years!

Facial animations, animations, clothes, armors, skins, and cutscenes are amazing, but ofcourse cutscenes could be more cinematic like. Oh, and snow! Most realistic snow ever, period.

But, what I don't like. I really miss the choices, the decisions I make, right now it is an illusion of choices, well...we don't even have choices! I choose only character behavior in conversations, and not too often, it is sad. I would like too see consequences in plot depending on what I say, what I choose, what I do.

Also, what I would like to see is more violence, at least SOME blood, and why the hell there is no romance? I want to see at least some romance. She is live person, she can't think only about machines, right? I am trying too feel the character, but I can't.

Right now world of Horizon is beautiful, but also empty, we got quests, but got no accidents or random events around the map, every side quest have almost no influence on plot at all. You can't change the ending in any way, it's same everytime and it's a biggest mistake for that game!

Want to say something about NPCs, to be honest, you can't do much in towns/villages, you can't waste your time by playing some game or drink some vodka in pubs, you can't prove yourself against other hunters - yes, we got it, hunter grounds and....few dialogues in hunter house. You really visit just few NPC, taking quests like in some MMORPG and that's all, you get reward and goodbye. So it is an illusion of city full of life, all NPCs are boring, do nothing and nothing happens, nobody gets killed, BORIIIIIIIIIIIIIING.

Last push (end fight) could be also bigger, because right now it reminds me a lowbudget scenario. There is no army, just 15-20 machines and you, wow, that's the fight!! And where is nora army? Where is metidian guards? Where is battle? There is no battle.

What can really be improved is autosave system, it's tragic and totally broken, you die = start all over again, no choice. In other ways, this game is beautiful! But, too much still can be improved!

It's not YOUR story of Aloy, it's the story of Aloy, and you can't change anything, that is clearly not best move, because of that and by many other reasons, can't give more than 7.

This game can be absolutely beautiful and incredibly irritating at the same time. I was so fed up with certain situations during combat that I just wanted to drop the controller and never pick it up again, but i was intrigued enough to continue and ended up pleasantly surprised with the overall package. This will be a series much improved with future installments I'm sure.

Overall the game was not bad, but not worth a perfect score - it has some issues. The graphics and initial hour introduction were spot on - one of the best tutorial hours in a videogame ever to get you attached to the heroine, Aloy. After that, the character development was flat, and the story a bit stale, side missions are very, very repetitive. It has about 40 hours of total gameplay to platinum.

    Pros:
    Graphics are great
Combat is initially fun and difficult - that changes quickly
Map is well designed on the surface, but lacks depth.
Controls are fairly good - the only annoyance was when you changed ammo on accident when you bring up the wheel to craft more ammo.
    Cons:
LOOT FATIGUE - i understand having resources in the game, but 100 resource slots is very limited at one point or another, and it becomes more time managing inventory than playing toward the end.You get tired of picking stuff up and then having to drop it anyways.
BAD/LIMITED GEAR - you don't get an upgraded spear until very late in the game, and even then it is not much different from the one you start with. The gear is not varied at all, you don't really get a chance to go down a "build path". Until the ancient armor mission the gear is all very similar, then you are practically invincible. Very strange way to manage gear. The ranged weapons get boring quickly once you learn that you just max your stock bow Fire damage and kill everything quickly. Expected different stat boosts with different weapons, but revolves around "modifications" which are very basic. You don't "upgrade" weapons really, you just craft more ammo slots, kind of lame.
TOO SHORT - Main story line can probably be completed in around 8-10 hours, with 40 hours to platinum and do everything the game has to offer. That is just simply too short for a title like this to me.
SHALLOW MAP - map looks good on surface, but there are no real dungeons/caves/"metal ruins" to go to outside of the main story. Sort of like having Skyrims map with no explorable dungeons, gets boring quick. No reason to explore because you never get better gear by doing so.
EASY TO BREAK - if you get the blast sling early, you can down all machines with ease, taking very little strategy.

TLDR; if you go into Zero Dawn looking for the Witcher, Fallout/Skyrim RPG experience, you wont get it. You will get a very "face value" game that will win a ton of awards at the end of the year. Worth the play through, but zero replayability or longevity.

I found my first playthrough to be very tedious and straining, but new game + fixed a lot of my problems. It has it's highs and lows, the highs being very high and the lows being very low. A high would be the fantastic opening and great cinematics, and a low would be repetitively grinding for hours in order to reach the right level for a quest (problem not present in new game +). It is very difficult, but there's a nice payoff when you finish a tough battle. One big plus is the games absolutely jaw-dropping ending which I won't spoil. I was always pretty interested to learn more about the past, and when I finally got some new info on the "old ones" it felt great. I would say this is a decent game you should buy used or while it's on sale. It's no Witcher 3, but it's fun. Expand

A.I. in this game is fantastic and every fight almost always feels like something new... until you come across the same enemies over and over again, especially unavoidable difficult ones. However the game does not suffer from boring or repetitive side missions as most of them are usually unique in some way, accompanied by an interesting but hard to follow plotline in the background. This being said at some points in later and mid game you do lose track of the actual purpose behind what you're doing, as it feels disjointed.

It's fun to simply explore the world of Horizon, collect resources and upgrade your gear in it's well structured RPG system. Destroying giant tough enemies feels satisfying and always your mistake if you die rather than a faulty game mechanic, something a lot of games suffer from. A smooth FPS, and well put together gameplay make this a fantastic game, and overall worth your buck.

Gameplay wise and well, the grand picture actually, this game ended very close to a cross between Witcher 3 and Assassins Creed. Offers little new on gameplay other than the story. It is you and the machines with a bow & arrow. Combat very bare boned and simple and all defence you have is dodge. Melee combat is also incredible simple.
Your foes comes in many forms. Humans, small machines and large tough-to-kill godzillas. Also you are to hunt animals for upgrade resources.
Although i gotta bow down for a very easy and low curve learning the controls.

Plot: extremely ambiguous, it seemed to me trivial, but in extremely rare moments it was still interesting. It can definitely be said that this is not the most important aspect of this game.

Combat System / Gameplay: Oh my God! It's just amazing. I don’t have enough symbols to describe how great it is, there are enough weapons for different fighting styles, battles with cars are exciting and addictive, especially if you play on pre-max / max difficulty level, in this case, the game turns into a kind of challenge ... The artificial intelligence(AI) of robots deserves respect, but it should be said that in this contrast, battles with humans look weak.

Open World / Side Quests / Characters: The world is full of different activities, side quests, hunting trials, etc. It all comes down to fighting ancient robots, and for me this is definitely an advantage of this game.
Characters who live in different settlements are plastic and do not react in any way to the main character, you can literally jump over his heads. But this is typical for most role-playing games.

Total: objectively this game is good, it has some problems and drawbacks. But playing it, getting carried away by the delightful gameplay and battles with robots, all these problems fade into the background.

I'm looking forward to continuing on playstation 5 and hope that most of these problems will be eliminated.

After the first hour, there's nothing new. The game is boring, repetitive ad nauseam, you will do the same combat all over again. And the kid Alloy looks weird, with a a big head to a tiny frame.

I was really excited to finally be able to play this game. So much praise and all the trailers/screenshots looked fantastic. However, after having enjoyed the first five hours, the fun basically stopped entirely. Here are some aspects that stood out to me.

    | Story:
There are essentially two stories in this game. One of the past, and the present story. In the game you're basically trying to figure out what happened to the world while unraveling the story of the past.
The story of the present was pretty bad in my opinion and the world-background was the main thing that kept me going through this game. While not entirely original, it was intriguing and kept me wondering what would happen next.

    | Characters:
Just terrible. Aloy, our protagonist, is one of the most annoying main-characters I've ever come across. While it is very refreshing to have a female lead that is not sexualized (in any way), she more than made up for that with stupid remarks and just an unlikeable attitude. The voice-actress was the best in the game, but the lines were just horrible.

She also wouldn't stop chattering to herself with useless phrases that completely broke any sense of immersion. I generally dislike (game-) protagonists that are unable to shut their mouth for just two minutes, but this time around she really made me hate almost every minute I played.

What also bothered me was that she always (and I mean ALWAYS) was right about everything. No matter how illogical her thinking was, she somehow always managed to exactly hit the mark on any "riddle" that presented itself. She never really seemed to struggle with anything and thus made a really uninteresting case of "I'm the chosen one so I cannot fail in any way".

Pretty much every other character was simply a puppet used to advance the story in any possible way. No interesting "rivals", only incredibly stupid cardboard cutouts (although a lot dumber).

    | Visuals:
This game is obviously gorgeous in almost every way. Every screenshot looks breath-taking and foliage looks convincing. However, there were some things that really bothered me and seemed too easy to fix.

    - rainy weather. I'm not sure if anybody at Guerilla ever experienced rain, but it certainly does not immediately put a black & white-filter over your eyes. Gameplay was heavily impeded by this, as visual clues get lost completely on a bright screen. It just does not look good.
    - caves. and subsequently, Aloy being too dumb to carry her own light around. Not sure if she has nightvision and doesn't care to share or if the developers had their screen-brightness on maximum. With HDR enabled, caves were a chore to plow through. Barely anything is visible and even machine lights do not help a lot with orientation. The world looked great at night though, so no idea what they f'ed up there.
    - terrain. It looked generally great (as I hinted at with the believable foliage) but stones basically always look like plastic. Not sure if this is a shader-issue, but I felt like playing in a sandpit with plastic rocks again.

    | Combat:
While I think the idea of machines and vulnerable parts to shoot off is great, it just got boring after a while. It's cool that you can see the parts flying off and can then use them to craft other things, but the novelty wore off a lot faster than I expected.

    - Hit-detection (or lack thereof). My biggest gripe with the ranged combat was the hit-detection. Not only are there numerous invisible walls throughout the game (even in boss-fights) but arrows also sometimes go straight through enemies. Being in an intense fight just to either see three arrows stuck in the air before me or have several consecutive arrows go straight through human heads (WTF) without dealing damage makes me want to throw my controller until it's considered micro-plastic. Seriously, how did they not manage to fix stuff like this in four years??
    - close combat. Honestly some of the worst melee I've experienced in years. Not only do animations take ages, they also cannot be cancelled and the lack of a lock-on feature completely killed it. Luckily, there aren't many situations that require its use.

    | Other things:
    - Dialogue. Holy **** is it bad. I had to laugh out loud at almost every other sentence with how stupid it was. Not sure if this is due to the studios lack of experience with open-world games, but damn the game took itself WAY too seriously and 95% of all sentences made no sense. Voice acting (except for the two main-characters) was also very sub-par. My opinion probably was also influenced by the horrible facial-animations. Another heavy task, of course, but damn it removed every ounce of respect I had left for the dialogue.
    - Inventory. Not talking about UI here (it was pretty good actually) but how space is managed. Basically, it's like the inventory in Minecraft, just with stacks of 50 items. The problem is that it is full WAY too fast and usually with items you never need

One thing that the game excels at is the world design. The world looks beautiful, and the vistas of the landscapes are incredible. Unfortunately, it is basically impossible to walk five feet without fighting something. There are tons of enemies EVERYWHERE. This wouldn't have been an issue if the combat wasn't awful. A lot of it just boils down to hiding behind some cover and spamming arrows at the robot until it dies, which can take a long time because every single enemy is a complete sponge. The melee combat is even worse. You have a light and strong attack. The light attack does practically no damage and is only really good for when you need to hit an enemy one more time before it dies, and the strong attack takes about 2 seconds to hit the enemy after you press the button. Neither of these feel good to use at all and I found it better to keep my distance and spam arrows . One thing that a lot of people seem to really like about this is the story. I think it's fine. It's fairly generic with you needing to stop this cult from destroying the world. It is also very clear that the developers came up with the idea for robot dinosaurs
well before they thought of anything else. I think I might have enjoyed the story more if the cutscenes were hand animated and the didn't house some crappy automated lip sync thing that makes it look like two lifeless robots are talking to each other so that they didn't have to do as much work. It's honestly kind of distracting how bad it is since a good portion of the game is cutscenes. Despite all of this, I did somewhat enjoy my time with this game and managed to finish it by playing it on and off for about 6 months. With the complete edition for the game being only $20 now, I think everyone might as well play it, but in my opinion it's not all too great. Who knows, you might enjoy it way more than I did.

Finally dredged this out of my backlog, and glad I did. Well-crafted world, excellent enemies, good story. The combat got repetitive enough after about 10 hours that I sped through the rest of the game just to complete the story. Hopefully Forbidden West improves upon what it built here, especially with more combat options, melee especially.

Horizon Zero Dawn is a uniquely crafted world filled with "machines" that are now the dominant species on earth. Aloy the main protagonist tries to figure out how this world came to be and discover her true origins.

When this game came out in 2017 I had little to no interest in it, however now with the release of the sequel and all the hype around it, I decided to check this one out.

When this game came out in 2017 I had little to no interest in it, however now with the release of the sequel and all the hype around it, I decided to check this one out. Horizon Zero Dawn is a really beautiful world that has been excellently crafted, it's very unique to have machines/robots completely dominate the earth, and those machines are definitely the highlight of the game. I love the designs of these machines from the Watcher to the Rockbreaker, they're all very cool and also a huge variety of them.

Gameplay is both a hit and a miss, when it is at its best it's absolutely incredible, this is usually when fighting huge machines like the Stormbird or the Thunderjaw, these fights were amazing. However when the gameplay is at its worst, it can be incredibly annoying and frustrating, this was usually when fighting human enemies as I thought fighting humans didn't have nearly as much depth as fighting the machines. The camera can sometimes be pretty annoying as well, and can really mess you up in combat. However the combat overall is pretty good, nothing groundbreaking but it was overall fun and didn't bore me for the approx. 40 hours i played. Exploring was for the most part pretty fun, however the climbing was really boring as the only thing you do is point to where you want to jump and the game does it for you, but the visuals did make up for the climbing parts. The side quests were often interesting, some were forgettable and some were memorable, but considering I finished them all before finishing the main quest means they were definitely not boring.

The story, similar to the gameplay was pretty good, the idea is very unique however I think the execution was pretty predictable, not bad necessarily but just pretty predictable. I like Aloy as a character, and some side characters were fun, but on the other hand some side characters were really forgettable and had really no impact on me, some side characters' death were so incredibly badly executed that it was honestly kind of funny, and some just didn't have enough impact. However despite all that the story was overall pretty good, and kept me intrigued for the most part.

Horizon Zero Dawn is clearly a well made game, that has its issues, but the good outweigh the bad, and the result is a fun game with a very interesting concept.

A fun game that suffers A LOT of the repetitive open world and meaningless side quests, but with a good lore (NOT STORY) with empty side characters that have no personality and decent combat. For what it is, it's a decent game with a good scifi lore out of the conventional, sadly the story is just bad with tribes that nobody cares.
The original review said the game needed to improve a lot

To the point that on highest difficulty, STEALTH is the only approach for this game because otherwise you're screwed?

Let's be real, it's a good game, but not that good. By the halfway point I just wanted to be done with it, I was so fed up with the story, and the sidequests are so bland that I could predict them a mile away. Everything related to humans ends up in an ambush and everything related to machines ends up in a fight. Nothing interesting is discovered or achieved.

Fighting robots contains shooting yellow parts on their body over and over and over again. The game gives you a lot of useless arsenal from which you use about three things. The skill three is really useless and boring and so is the crafting system. That was nice because after you find a campfire and felt safe you want to discover the open world and the dangerous machines because you feel safe so these were game's positive and fun sides but there are some points that bothered me and made me think that they could've done better. Like difficulty levels aren't like how they're supposed to be,i chose the normal difficulty first but it was not like normal difficulty it was a little bit like hard difficulty. And it got boring and boring. Same thing all over again. Go to a place, kill the Cultists and the Corruptors or Corrupted machines and loot the leader or talk with someone and so on... Though that was boring i sensed irony in the story. All that happening in the 31st century. But i felt like playing The Witcher 3And that's the part i liked. Because we have the potential to do it. We have so futuristic and technologic dreams and expectations from future but we have the potential to destroy ourselves and wipe all life out on Earth. Ironic story was intriguing. No game is perfect and this wasn't perfect too. In one mission i had to kill the whole Cultists and the Corrupted machines. It wasnt possible without doing it silent and smooth. I mean you can't just go around and kill everyone in order. You have to be organised and kill in a logical order. Anyway in that level i thought if i kill one by one and walk out of their attack range it would be silent and smooth. But after i kill one cultist and walk out of their attack range game reseted the progress and the cultist i've just killed spawned again. And my plans fell into the water. That was a block for player's imagination. I can say that's the biggest reason that i gave 6/10 to this game. Expand

I see the story get praised a lot, but I found it to be a snooze fest. Whilst the game opens quite well it looses its pacing and quality straight after. The dialogue in particular turned me off. It was so boring and uninteresting I slowly found myself getting more distanced with the story as it went on and whilst the game ended well I didn't care much about the outcome because I didn't care about the main character or the supporting cast.

The biggest issue for me however is the combat. The melee combat in particular.
The combat feels so clunky compared to other games of the genre and it's a real problem. There's also hardly any weapons in this game and that doesn't help, neither does the dreadful crafting system.

I also want to mention the side quests which are repetitive and boring. Often involving the usual old scanning and searching.

So as much as I wanted to like this game I just couldn't. It was a beautiful game but one I lost interest in and in my opinion it holds no place amongst the greatest games of the decade like the witcher 3 wild hunt, the legend of Zelda breath of the wild and God of war for example.

While Horizon Zero Dawn certainly isn't a bad game, I do think it is a bit overrated. It looks amazing graphically and the story is fantastic. However, the gameplay is this game's weak point. I found myself trying to avoid combat to explore the world more, which to me is not a great sign when it comes to gameplay. The world itself is fun to explore, but I wish the combat was better and the map might actually be a bit too big. The AI is mediocre outside of the robots and in general I just wish there was more to the gameplay itself. The world is fun to explore and the main character is interesting, but that means nothing if the gameplay is just average. Expand

Didn't care much for the story. Core mechanics were good and fights were fun most of the time.

Still playing it at 30% of the game. Just a few moments of the game really captivated me. So far it’s pretty repetitive and feels like completing a checklist.
The game is super mega beautiful though.

I find that fans of Sony's works fall in love with pretty visuals above all else. I see more people marveling about picture modes than the actual games themselfves. The story is very original, interesting, but there is little going on in the world. It's vast, the environment is beautiful, but it is a sleep inducing game. Another thing that’s more of a minor problem is the facial animations, they seem very robotic but they aren’t mass effect andromeda bad, they seem more like assassin's creed level robotic.another thing is the damage system… by that i mean it takes 3 headshots to kill an enemy but they can one shot you with an arrow to the leg.also the stealth and cover spots are hot garbage literally i think it’s no point to even trying to stealth this game. And the human enemies have no emotion when they speak which can make the game very uncomfortable at times. But if you are willing to look past these issues I do recommend playing this game and if you want to play just for the story the game has a difficult setting named story you will enjoy. Expand

The unfortunate fact of Horizon is that most of what it does well, other games have done better, and they did it with a compelling who and where. This is the game you play after you’ve finished The Witcher 3, Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate, and Far Cry: Primal. It is the greatest hits compilation of open-world games. Yeah, sure, you might want to own it, but the real connoisseur has the original albums.

Horizon Zero Dawn has an unforgettable protagonist, world, story, visuals, soundtrack and gameplay. Due to minor issues with inventory management and quest selection, I cannot call it perfect but I can say it is absolutely worth your time.

There is enough spectacular action to keep you occupied for a couple of weeks, but Horizon is not the hot new killer app for PS4.
