My experience with Hollow Knight boils down to 2 parts - the first being my first 10 hours with the game and the second - everything after.

The vibe, world and gameplay had me hooked at first and I genuinely liked it but at a certain point I realized I couldn't get anywhere without a guide. Not a problem - started following one and everything was fine untill I realized what the game really is - backtracking, grinding, hyper specific quests you are never really notified about and difficulty for difficutly's sake. After that it was all downhill.

Around my 20th hour I was only in it for the plat and even that was thanks to the invincibility glitch which made this slog of a game more bearable. I tried telling myself that the game just isn't for me but I can't say that a person who would be willing to put hundreds of hours into a game like this would be someone with an adequate gaming opinion.

Overall I'm just happy I finished it, because at one point I wasn't sure there would actually be an ending... it just kept going and going and going and... I appreciate the care that went into making Hollow Knight but in the end - it manages to put together almost everything I dislike in gaming in one package. 4/10

For sure the worst and most frustrating experience I ever had playing a videogame, some bosses and some platform areas are just sick and then after spendig hours trying to pass through what you find is just not enough to satisfy you after passing that extremely hard areas. For me there's no reason to keep trying it till the end.

The game might hook you with the charm and sense of exploration, but it has neither. Every area is either so easy you'll never risk dying, or a miserable platformer where every step kills you. Dying is punished by either the tedium of climbing and fighting back to your body. Further failure is punished with permanent resource loss.

There are moments you'll enjoy. Moments where you want

There are moments you'll enjoy. Moments where you want to get better and explore the world. But the game developers will spend every moment punishing you for trying anything but slow and safe gameplay, forcing you back into the same boring hallways. Maybe you'll get past that curve and master the controls. I did not.

Bosses are excelent and well designed. Only flaw is that you should be able to choose your desired difficulty instead of playing on one developer-chosen (hard) since the bosses become impossible to beat.

Hollow Knight soon becomes a chore and never really pays off. Some elements of this game simply intruded on my enjoyment of it early on and it only got worse, if only gradually from then on.

My main problem of the game is the stiffness of...well, everything. It's not that it's badly done, but the developers have chosen to make a game that wants you to be (1) very deliberate with movement and (2) rely on very specific memory of each area. There are just countless little delays in animations that make you feel like a statue. I'm sure some players will be fine with this aesthetic, but it made every moment of traversal really tedious for me, and resulted in more mistakes during battle than I would like.

Also, while the art and graphics are beautiful, the sprites annoyingly interfere in gameplay too often. It can be difficult to discern the foreground from the background. And areas often have little flairs of geography that obscures the player. Nice visual touch, but getting into fights in some areas will leave you guessing about your position.

Horribly frustrating for someone who is not good at video games. There is minimal direction and no easier difficulty. Cannot get past the introduction stages and I regret my purchase

My 1/10 rating isn't that it was bad, it just wasn't good. The graphics do not have enough variety, soundtrack forgettable, not much fun. Giana Sisters Twisted Dreams is way better than this and cheaper at the moment. Platform games have had some great entries over the years. Mario, Sonic and Rayman are all better by miles. I have to question the scores on these reviews. This game is justMy 1/10 rating isn't that it was bad, it just wasn't good. This game is just hugely out classed in its genre by old and new games. I just don't thiink there is a reason to buy this game unless you are really in to platformers and have exhausted your other options. It is just completely uninspiring and boring. I gave it 1 for the nice controls but responsive controls won't make me play a game that isn't fun.

Metroidvania's aren't my thing but I thought Touhou Luna Nights was great. It's not that I can't enjoy them. I just didn't enjoy this one.

The colour pallette is awful too. Full of girly hues, turquoise, pink, purple. Not for me at all. Looks like someone thought oooh northern lights look nice and threw the colours in the game randomly without trying to make it actually nice.

I feel like most reviewers only played the game for an hour.

At first its quite fun. The problems take several hours to come up. 1. There is NO plot. You get a few vague lore hints and such, but really have NO reason to go anywhere aside from being capable of going there. 1. There is NO plot. You get a few vague lore hints and such, but really have NO reason to go anywhere aside from being capable of going there. Overtime you get the feeling there is a very rough vague story that will be revealed by the end, but thats pretty cheap. A 30 second story to fill the entire game? It basically assumes your gonna go everywhere and do everything in the game cause your playing it. Your character has no purpose at all.

    2. Like many platformers (metroidvania) games, you unlock movement abilities which allow you to access new areas in old content. The size of the game is quite significant (which is great). The problem is that you spend HUGE amounts of time back tracking/searching through places. Like a significant portion of your play time. There are train stations to move to different areas, but there is only 1 per area, usually NOT centrally located. It can often be faster to run through the entire area and half way into the next one instead of going to a train station. The more you explore, the worse it gets, far worse. This REALLY detracts from the game after awhile.

    Too difficult boss battles.
Impossible to beat them with a strategy but only with the lucky.
No possibility to grind and level up.
Gameplay to much fast and confusing, especially in boss battles.
    Good music.

Vendors do not do to the hub world for the most part, that means you will have to backtrack for hours to get an item and possibly die to some terrible platforming.

People say this game has 60h of content, that is true, only because you will absolutely spend at least 20h+ backtracking, that is, if you are a good player.

The game is extremely confusing because it offers absolutely no objective, so you just wander aimlessly for hours on end wondering what you have to do until you surrender to walkthroughs.

There is no plot. that is it, unless you go and watch some 3h videos explaining the story, good luck finding anything in here.

In sum, there are some good points here, mainly the soundtrack, however, this game is incredibly lackluster, if you absolutely hate yourself, go for it.

Visually stunning, mechanically rewarding – Hollow Knight is a game that works on just about every level. It presents challenge, but always fairly, with plentiful options to explore new pathways. [Issue#155, p.92]

Hollow Knight: Voidheart Edition shakes up the MetroidVania space with excellent worldbuilding and the challenge to match. Though the game does not hold your hand, those willing to face the world of Hallownest will find a game with a lot of “Soul.”

Hollow Knight: Voidheart Edition shines bright, which is ironic considering its solemn presentation and challenging gameplay. Offering a plethora of collectibles and content to explore as well as unrelenting confrontations, the game delivers a sensational, mysterious journey which will undoubtedly test your platforming skills.
