I do like that there are no stats to level. It is all just equipment based, which can be upgraded and fiddled with. If you get stuck, you can go elsewhere for a while to get different fixin's, but eventually you will just have to git gud for the most part. Enemies and bosses have no life bars, which adds a layer of intensity I personally enjoyed. There is also a mapping system that makes you earn it instead of handing it to you, which also adds to the intensity. It does start and build slowly, but is a long game. Took me 60 hours, but minimum for a newbie is probably 40+ hours, depending on how much you want to complete. Very well done and fun game. Expand

Okay. I want to start off by saying that this game is an immensely huge achievement by Team Cherry. I want to start off by saying that this game is an immensely huge achievement by Team Cherry. They have crafted a world full of charm, detail and richness that grounds you in a place that feels like it was there long before you arrived. The backgrounds, the character design and the music are top-tier. The mechanics are well-executed, responsive and intuitive enough to allow a seasoned practitioner to feel in full control of their actions and progress. Also, as has been stated, the world is a massive, sprawling maze of variety, unique enemies and new challenges that keep you guessing.

Big, obvious influences on this game are classic elements from DaS, Super Metroid, Castlevania and Rayman etc. And it borrows from all these games and combines these elements in ways that are both familiar yet just the right side of new to make this game feel like its own entity. The retrievement of your currency by backtracking to where you died ala DaS is there, the unfurling, slow-reveal of connecting rooms and areas on the map screen ala Castlevania 'Symphony of the Night' etc, the double-jump ability that opens up previously unreachable areas etc. These are all derivative, predictable but, as stated before, there's something about the world that draws you into it, willing you to keep going. It all just feels so of-a-piece.

The boss battles, too, are challenging, surprising encounters, full of variety, unexpected twists, phases and attacks. And, there are so many that you'll likely be reaching for Google to find one you should have encountered 10 hours previously into your gameplay but holds an imperative upgrade or item to allow you to march to the next area, so you have to find it. And, this brings me to some of the downsides to this game...

The game time on my first playthrough is upwards of 50 plus hours. During that time I must have backtracked at least 50% of my time, trying to reach a previous area, planning my route and trawling through challenges and obstacles I'd previously, emotionally moved on from. Guys, this is a huuuuuge time suck. Fast-travel is limited to hitching a ride with an awesome stag beetle character who has stations scattered at various points in the game world. Sadly, many important vendors, NPC's and bosses are far from these stations, leaving you to pump time into navigation and retreading old steps. As the game is so massive and impressively so, the desire for more bus stops looms large by the end. I know that Dark Souls did this, but that game was interconnected, employing short-cuts and time saves as the world opened up to you. In HK, this just doesn't happen. instead, it all just feels out of control by the end.

Another drawback is how un-signposted both the story and the next direction of travel feels. Where I'm used to this in games I love, like Dark Souls, Hyper Light Drifter, those games used the environments to punish you into the right direction, or used cut scenes to elucidate where you had to go next. Things generally pointed their way towards a specific destination or goal. Many times in HK I was lost, unable to know what to do and reaching for Google, youtube videos and walkthroughs to help me gain clarity where none was given by the game. So, I guess you can add all those hours to my overall game time also. Very, frustrating and disappointing considering what joy it is to discover these places the first time around.

The boss battles, too, were sometimes excruciatingly hard, making you Git Gud to a degree that simply demands too much time, and then so remedially easy, you smash them first try. Very inconsistent. Also, many bosses were recycled into OP versions of previous iterations, by simply making them faster, more aggressive and a slightly different colour scheme. This feels cheap at times, especially when the reward for beating these bosses is simply the knowledge of knowing you beat them. After a while of this, the difficulty starts to feel arbitrary, or intentionally hard just to draw more time out of you, instead of more joy. An example of this was The Path Of Pain area. Needless to say, it is painfully hard. Without adding spoilers, the reward for this area does not match the effort in completing it. And, so much of it feels this way.

Lastly, there is no NG + where you get to carry all your rewards, skills, charms and ability into a fresh, slightly harder playthrough. That's a gigantic missed opportunity from Team Cherry, in my opinion. What a joy it would have been to traverse the world again, knowing where to go and what to do, defeating it with style. I enjoyed parts of the DLC's. But, again, they were so hard to find, I started to feel like Team Cherry were being deliberately obtuse, almost relying on the existence of Google as a crutch for badly implemented world design.

So, in closing, I both in awe and in frustration at this game. I just hope Team Cherry's 'Silksong' sequel learns from some of this, imo, fair criticism.

I will be more honest, however, and say that I probably would never have finished the game if I didn't have an extremely detailed game map open on my computer while playing... this game does not hold your hand, point you in the right direction, or give you a single hint as to what to do in most instances. It's a 2D side-scrolling open-world RPG like Skyrimvania and once you get hooked, it's nigh impossible to put it down. I found myself so helplessly engrossed in the world, lore, and experience that even two months after first picking it up, I still find myself falling in love with more elements I'm just now discovering. I simply cannot recommend playing this game enough but I do have to recommend using a cheat-sheet to get the most out of your enjoyment (at least based on my own personal experience). And for 20 bucks or less, you'll get your money's worth and so much more. I'd be happy to pay a full 60+ for this game simply because of how much Team Cherry takes care of you. Buy it, rent it, borrow it, whatever. Just play it. Expand

The vibe, world and gameplay had me hooked at first and I genuinely liked it but at a certain point I realized I couldn't get anywhere without a guide. Not a problem - started following one and everything was fine untill I realized what the game really is - backtracking, grinding, hyper specific quests you are never really notified about and difficulty for difficutly's sake. After that it was all downhill.

Around my 20th hour I was only in it for the plat and even that was thanks to the invincibility glitch which made this slog of a game more bearable. I tried telling myself that the game just isn't for me but I can't say that a person who would be willing to put hundreds of hours into a game like this would be someone with an adequate gaming opinion.

Overall I'm just happy I finished it, because at one point I wasn't sure there would actually be an ending... it just kept going and going and going and... I appreciate the care that went into making Hollow Knight but in the end - it manages to put together almost everything I dislike in gaming in one package. 4/10

Not much direction on your journey and there will be lots of back tracking which can sometimes be tedious. Upgrading your knight and finding charms to make you stronger can be challenging but rewarding. Enemies are abundant and difficult. For sure the worst and most frustrating experience I ever had playing a videogame, some bosses and some platform areas are just sick and then after spendig hours trying to pass through what you find is just not enough to satisfy you after passing that extremely hard areas. For me there's no reason to keep trying it till the end.

There are moments you'll enjoy. Moments where you want to get better and explore the world. But the game developers will spend every moment punishing you for trying anything but slow and safe gameplay, forcing you back into the same boring hallways. Maybe you'll get past that curve and master the controls. I did not.

Bosses are excelent and well designed. Only flaw is that you should be able to choose your desired difficulty instead of playing on one developer-chosen (hard) since the bosses become impossible to beat.

My main problem of the game is the stiffness of...well, everything. It's not that it's badly done, but the developers have chosen to make a game that wants you to be (1) very deliberate with movement and (2) rely on very specific memory of each area. There are just countless little delays in animations that make you feel like a statue. I'm sure some players will be fine with this aesthetic, but it made every moment of traversal really tedious for me, and resulted in more mistakes during battle than I would like.

Also, while the art and graphics are beautiful, the sprites annoyingly interfere in gameplay too often. It can be difficult to discern the foreground from the background. And areas often have little flairs of geography that obscures the player. Nice visual touch, but getting into fights in some areas will leave you guessing about your position.

I gave it 1 for the nice controls but responsive controls won't make me play a game that isn't fun.

Metroidvania's aren't my thing but I thought Touhou Luna Nights was great. It's not that I can't enjoy them. I just didn't enjoy this one.

The colour pallette is awful too. Full of girly hues, turquoise, pink, purple. Not for me at all. Looks like someone thought oooh northern lights look nice and threw the colours in the game randomly without trying to make it actually nice.

Overtime you get the feeling there is a very rough vague story that will be revealed by the end, but thats pretty cheap. A 30 second story to fill the entire game? It basically assumes your gonna go everywhere and do everything in the game cause your playing it. Your character has no purpose at all.

    2. Like many platformers (metroidvania) games, you unlock movement abilities which allow you to access new areas in old content. The size of the game is quite significant (which is great). The problem is that you spend HUGE amounts of time back tracking/searching through places. Like a significant portion of your play time. There are train stations to move to different areas, but there is only 1 per area, usually NOT centrally located. It can often be faster to run through the entire area and half way into the next one instead of going to a train station. The more you explore, the worse it gets, far worse. This REALLY detracts from the game after awhile.

I must have played around 15 metroidvanias throughout my life, mostly from Metroid and Castlevania franchises (surprise, surprise). I can safely say the following without a shadow of a doubt: Hollow Knight is the best metroidvania ever made and by very far.

The game has this unique and captivating charm exposed by every bug you encounter, even more so for the NPCs they have more charisma than any Triple A character could ever dream of. Of course the Knight itself is a shining example with his baddass-cute duality.

Graphically, the game is beautiful! Every area of the gigantic map has its own theme and again the line is blurred between creppy (Deepnest) and jolly (Greenpath).

The awesome graphics and overall atmosphere pumps the player will to explore every area, no wonder this is one of Hollow Knight stronger features. It is possible to pin the map for rooms you feel like need a given power-up to access, which you’ll gladly return to once you acquire them since the exploration is super rewarding. When you find something, is something that REALLY matters gameplaywise. It’s not like “Hey my 79th missile expansion, yay!” or “Another sword that deals 3% more dps than my current one”; it is something like a charged attack or the Abyss Shriek spell, in other words: things that completely change the way you play.

The inventory and power-ups are amazing and the game opts for a more minimalistic approach (instead of 2000 items in Castlevanias) as a result they are much more meaningful; it is such a better system. For example your health: you start with 5 masks (5 hit points) which you can max to 9, they work in a Zelda’s Piece of Heart format for each 4 shards you gain 1 mask; as such when you earn another HP you feel accomplished. The same approach is used for the nail arts (the “sword” special moves) and spells, however the crowning jewel of your inventory are the Charms.

There are 40 charms with its own weights and they are responsible for the customization of your character. Do you wanna extend the range of your nail, have more hit points or maybe some minions to help you in combat? Just equip the Charms accordingly but watch out, you just have so many slots and the stronger the charm the more notches (slots) you’re gonna need for them (for the most time…there are some hidden gems with only one slot required). This system is f*cking amazing! You adjust your character according to your playstyle but must make sacrifices to accommodate them and the phenomenal combat will ensure you to try different things since the game is far from being easy.

Here is where Hollow Knight sets the bar from other games of the genre: the combat. It is not clunky as in Vania nor boring like Metroid, instead it works like the best action games of the genre going for a more fast-paced rhythm. Take Shinobi, Strider, Mega Man X using Zero or Shovel Knight; Hollow Knight draws more on these games than anything else. Besides the aforementioned offensive options the movement skills and power-ups are also essential to keep you alive improving the experience a lot.

With an amazing combat like that, no wonder the bosses are incredible making each fight unique and memorable but they don’t f*ck around. So…it is hard, but the difficulty scales perfectly as the game goes and you’ll be in for a real treat with the last bosses. If you are insane though there is the Godhome area where four different boss rushes are available and you can also train against them individually in three difficulties (being the last one a One-Hit Kill option so good luck with Oblobble); if you succeed the final challenge is unlocked: the Pantheon of Hallownest.

This last challenge consists of a one life try on a rush containing every boss in the game as well as having a new boss at the very end; and keep in mind this last boss is by far the hardest in the game… it took me around THIRTY HOURS of practice and failed runs to finally beat the last Pantheon but once I did it I was in the top of world man.

Perfect combat, rewarding exploration, a unique charm, likable characters, incredible power-ups, fun customization system and to top it off a vast and beautiful map. Hollow Knight is the absolute zenith when it comes to metroidvanias; if you are a fan of the genre prepare yourself to be amazed.

People say this game has 60h of content, that is true, only because you will absolutely spend at least 20h+ backtracking, that is, if you are a good player.

The game is extremely confusing because it offers absolutely no objective, so you just wander aimlessly for hours on end wondering what you have to do until you surrender to walkthroughs.

There is no plot. that is it, unless you go and watch some 3h videos explaining the story, good luck finding anything in here.

In sum, there are some good points here, mainly the soundtrack, however, this game is incredibly lackluster, if you absolutely hate yourself, go for it.

The free additional content steps the challenge up a bit and the ultra end game god DLC is a tedious slog that most players will find to hard to be worth it. The gameplay, artwork and soundtrack are top-notch. The controls are very intuitive and highly responsive. This is important because as I mentioned above it's a soulslike game and the difficulty increases as you progress in the story.

YES, you will die many, many times but that's the nature of the game desgin. If you hate dying over and over again you should just skip it. But if you are willing to get better and learn the attack patterns of your enemies, believe me, the satisfaction will be immense after defeating one of your most hated bosses. I once spent 4 days trying to defeat a boss (SPOILER: Nightmare King Grimm). At first, I thought the fight was impossible to win because the enemy was moving too fast for my eyes even to visualize. But after learning his patterns by heart and making a plan how to respond I finally did.

So in short, yes some parts are very frustrating but also rewarding because you are forced to get better and better and actually feel the progress and the hard work you put in. The game never gets boring because you learn a variety of skills and new moves and are confronted with different types of enemies.

But to be honest this game isn't perfect. It won't take you by the hand and guide you. You yourself have to discover the whole huge map alone. Because there is acutally no "real" story you don't know where to go first and what's even going on. As you progress you will learn more and more about the lore.
So sometimes if you are stuck it's not a shame to look up a gamer's guide and find inspiration how to move on.

Conclusion: It's a truly beautiful game, making it a must-play. The lovely scenery and fitting soundtrack suck you in. The gameplay is very challenging and never gets boring.

It took me a while to realize that I could come back to my death spot to reclaim lost currency just like FromSoftware games. It didn't connect to me, I was wondering what the floating shadow thing was. It was confusing because it attacked me. Eventually, you can recover lost currency more easily. That's the best part about Hollow Knight, as the game got harder, they provide you with tools to solve whatever problem you encounter. Expand

Hollow Knight is haunting, beautiful and mechanically sound; it brings an enchanting world and mythos into existence that has clearly touched the minds and hearts of many. Much of it also feels like it has been done before. As such, this game feels like it has crafted an incredible ambience and environment, but didn't necessarily bring enough in the way of innovation, from my experience.

As has been described by many before me, Hollow Knight is a Metroidvania with familiar elements from the Dark Souls series in two ways: Dying causes you to lose your currency; and there is an emphasis on environmental storytelling rather than being told the story. I would argue that the game does enough in terms of its storytelling not to be frustratingly vague, but it is still not necessarily my favoured approach to storytelling.

Perhaps Hollow Knight's greatest achievement is its breathtakingly melancholic score. The theme that plays on the title screen is particularly beautiful, with its echoing piano melody and ominous, mournful string section setting the tone as far darker than most games of its ilk. It is a clear testament to the level of dedication and quality Team Cherry sought to set as the baseline for all the other game's facets. And in many ways, it nails them all.

The unfortunate truth is that I cannot bring myself to finish Hollow Knight. Despite its engrossing world and top-notch quality, many of its mechanical elements (especially those typical of the Metroidvania genre) feel a bit stale. This is not to say it is as by-the-numbers as many of its contemporaries - I see this as perhaps me experiencing burnout when it comes to the genre. But I believe my subjective experience also has at least some merit - it feels wrong to criticize a game clearly made with effort, care and love, but I do feel a sort of repulsion towards continuing with it after I've put it down.

Ultimately, if you enjoyed Symphony of the Night, Bloodstained, or other genre-defining Metroidvanias and appreciate the kind of ambience this game offers, I highly recommend Hollow Knight. I lament that I felt alienated from it after several hours, but I also recognize both its high quality and its breathtaking, haunting beauty.

I've been playing video-games for 30 years and I have to admit that it is definitely one of the best in its style.
The game is hard but actually
    - it's fast and you'll find yourself restarting from your previous save point and dashing your way to the spot you died without thinking
    - if it feels too hard then it is probably because you should go someplace else first, to find upgrades
    - there are no deadly traps, it's not "dark soul hard" with hidden enemies that oneshot you because you were unaware that they are at this spot
    - you continuously feel like you master all spells and abilities you have at that point. You will almost never die because you missed a command, you will die because you failed your strategy or were too slow to answer a threat.
After finishing the main game I watched some videos to see how to proceed for extra endings and discovered tips I had not even imagined on my first 30 hours.
At the time I'm writing, I've spent 60+hours to reach 110/112% and each time I get back to the game, helping my son to go through it, I still have the same feeling.

Musics, graphics, animations, sparkles, the game is wonderful.

The main issue is that you can't actually play without a map / guide unless you have thousand of hours to spend on the game or accept to skip 30 to 50% of the game.
That's the only reason I am not giving this rare piece of game a 10.

World and Graphics: 10/10 gorgeous, rich, extremely diversified, uncountable enemies, incredible bosses. Sublime Difficulty: 10/10 **** ass casuals not allowed in this game ( jk, but the game is in fact very very hard, but never unfair )

Gameplay: 9/10, the classic platform gameplay with dash, double jump, wall crawling. It fells very polished and fluid. There is also spells and the “Nail arts”: a different type of melee attack. Sadly I didn’t find that last one very useful since you have to charge this special attacks for a considerable amount of time, turning them almost useless and ALSO you have to keep the attack button pressed until you liberate the attack, and I don’t know about the rest of the players, but for me it is extremely hard to keep the square button on my ps4 control pressed at the same time that I do even a slightly tricky parkour. You can move around while doing it, but I find it almost impossible since moving around is not the most simple thing in places like the Coliseum of Fools for example. It just make me sad that this feature is in the game but because that most people will never really get to use it. The more different gameplay features in the game to diversify the gameplay, the better. And for me, this one was a very good opportunity threw out in the trash. You can use a special charm to significantly reduce this time, but beside the fact that you are not getting this charm until very late in the game and you still have to press the attack button all the time, there is also a lot of better charms that you can use, and you don’t want to waste one slot with this one. With lead us to another problem: I got all the charm slots and I still feeling that there is too few of them. Like, there is 40 charms in the game.. Why can I only equip like 4 or 5 at a time? I had the same feeling with Witcher 3 skills. Those games offers SO MANY possibilities for gameplay increases, and personalizations. But you still only get to use so few of them. And my last gameplay issue: the map. I am the type of player that really don’t like to get lost. I like to know what I am doing and where I am going. So more or less when I killed that soul master boss in City of Tears I started playing the game looking at a complete map on the Internet to guide myself and oh my god. I was the best thing I ever did in my life. Looking at a complete map I could finish my first run with 97% completion and 65 hours. It felt so much better knowing where I’m going. To know exactly what I’m doing, what I already did, and what I am going to do next. I DEFINITELY wouldn’t have this much fun just wandering in Hallownest until I finish the game. If you depend only on the map that the game offers you, you have basically 4 options: 1 Explore EVERY room and EVERY corner util you finally find what you are looking for and spend hundred of hours doing it ( considering that you didn’t forget it yet and if you know what you are doing in first place )
2 just get bored of meaningless walking around and quit the game
3 beat the game and enjoy like 50% of all the game has to offer and than quit or try another run
4 just like me, guide yourself with a complete map and enjoy aaaaaaaaaall the content that you want
Looking at a complete map gave me the possibility to enjoy almost ALL ( not counting dlc content ) that Hallownest has to offer. And oh my **** flying Radiance. I LOVED it. Hallownest... bruh... It is just incredible. I think that I’m not good at talking about stuff that I like, but for me, everything besides the few things that I complained here, is ABSOLUTELY PERFECT in this game

One of the best metroidvania games I have played, the difficulty is old school and spot on. Pattern memorization for bosses, sub bosses, and even common enemies is mandatory. Prepare to die, a lot, but also prepare to feel rewarded when you pick up a shiny new charm.

The game is soooo good. The enemies, music, bosses and overall aesthetic is super well done. If you like to struggle a bit and explore new areas you definitely need to try this!!

Лучший боевой платформер! Очень крутая система амулетов и их комбинаций, все боссы разные и интересные! Игра в стиле Соулс-лайк игр.

The best video game experience I ever had, from the ambience all the way to the challenge, everything is practically perfect. As long as you have determination to keep on striking through it's difficult, but not overly frustrating enemies and bosses you will be able to explore a massive world filled with misteries, upgrades, collectibles and beautiful artwork. Really should be called Lost Knight. I haven’t been this lost since dark souls 2. The boss fights are fun but running through the same area over and over and over again trying to find the one pathway you missed can be annoying.

Visually stunning, mechanically rewarding – Hollow Knight is a game that works on just about every level. It presents challenge, but always fairly, with plentiful options to explore new pathways. [Issue#155, p.92]

Hollow Knight: Voidheart Edition shakes up the MetroidVania space with excellent worldbuilding and the challenge to match. Though the game does not hold your hand, those willing to face the world of Hallownest will find a game with a lot of “Soul.”

Hollow Knight: Voidheart Edition shines bright, which is ironic considering its solemn presentation and challenging gameplay. Offering a plethora of collectibles and content to explore as well as unrelenting confrontations, the game delivers a sensational, mysterious journey which will undoubtedly test your platforming skills.
