Even after a beta that was amusing, their plans to release content episodically on such a tight schedule it troubling. This is a terrible product. Please don't support it.

They will be releasing each chunk of that for a full AAA price. In other words, the remake is going to be a three part, digital-only game that will end up costing $180 for all three parts. And I wouldn’t be surprised if Vincent and Yuffie are sold as DLC. That’s the brilliant plan there. What is wrong with this company. They make the sequel to Tomb Raider a timed exclusive and now they bring episodic games and want full price for unknown content. hey are dooming the new Hitman to bad sales because people who don’t have my patience but maybe they dont release the full game in 2017 because of bad sales they bring it earlier who knows. To start releasing a game in monthly tiny parts is BAD on all counts. Playing this was highly underwhelming. I enjoyed absolution, but this has mediocre ps2-3 graphics. Finished in 40 minutes and im not going to replay as there are dozens of much better games to spend my time with. A waste of money to buy. Maybe next January when full game is released it may be worth it.

The first episode was decent but short, it makes absolutely no sense though that they turned Hitman into an episodic game, it seems illogical and unnecessary to release an AAA game in episodes.

The sheer size of the Paris map and the amount of things to do allows for way more replay value than most games. The intro pack is actually 3 levels, 2 training and then one main mission level and all three are great. There are lots of challenges to complete and extra contracts and you will NOT be disappointed by the amount of content at the moment. The graphics are generally stunning; the level design in particular is absolutely stellar. The NPCs would benefit from a little more polish in appearance but there's nothing that looks bad. The gameplay is fantastic (except I wish the button to drag bodies wasn't the same for taking cover, resulting in occasional mistakes) and there are countless ways to approach a mission and its various objectives. The routines of the NPCs is quite convincing; they will sometimes notice the absence of guards that you've taken out and react to other suspicious changes in the environment lending weight to choices you make and keeping you on your toes. The main focus is on stealth but if you want to cause outrageous amounts of damage, guns blazing, you can, but the game becomes a lot harder if you choose combat as it only takes a few gunshot wounds to kill you. Completing challenges and earning points unlocks new ways to start the mission and new weapons or objects to infiltrate with. Overall; great opening installment, definitely worth the price. Expand

How dumb do they think we are.

The whole update system had ruined the gaming industry by allowing companies to release half made games and patch them as necessary when players complain about different components of the story. Don't like the AI wait a month and we will have a patch. Bad server issues, here's a patch. The only thing worse than this for gaming right now is the idea of buying upgrades and in game currency to get better items.

But let's review it as a standalone game. For those who have bought the 'Full Experience', I'm sorry for your wasted money basically - as if the rest of the episodes are of this quality, you may as well as flushed your cash right down the drain.

It's a mess. The core gameplay mechanic is basically a tutorial that you have to try very hard to fail, because the game holds your hand at every point. The game looks massive, but is in reality constrained, with Paris a tantalising but out of reach prospect. The graphics... passable. Story is very much "meh" for what we have, and who cares anyway as you'll only get a glimpse of it for the 45 minutes you'll play before the end. Sure, if you go for the full completion, you might get, say, 2 hours out of it, but there's no incentive to do so.

Add to that completely unnecessary and consumer unfriendly DRM and you have yet another Square Enix turd on our hands.

Yes, I admit I have a bias, as the whole core of me rejects the notion of episodic AAA gaming - I find it ludicrous. But if you judge it as a standalone title and ignore that facet completely, it's still a complete failure of a title.

Oh, and once again, a message to the major review sites - shame, shame on you. For absolutely nobody to call this game out for what it is is a massive indictment on how rotten your journalism is.

This score might sound unreasonably harsh, but I cannot honestly give it anymore.

The AI is inconceivably stupid. On the second mission (with the plane) I shot the target from on top of the roof (through the ceiling window) with a solider only 5 feet to the target's right. He did nothing but got on his radio and said something like "I don't think it's anything we have to worry about."

Opening AND closing doors with the triangle button? No ability to run? You can't climb over a small box, but you can climb a tall fence (the whole thing really forces you into specific scenarios). You can't jump over railing on the boat and drop to the level below? The crowds feel like lifeless cardboard cutouts. The graphics are very pastel-like cartoony. It all feels VERY DATED.

The list goes on and on; either you play EXACTLY how THEY want you to play - or - waltz through each mission in a few (uninteresting) minutes.

If you're a "completionist" and wish to do each mission 60,000 different ways, this may appeal. Otherwise, it's a very amateur feeling title that would be more at home on a last gen console.

It has nothing on the earlier instalments. AND the episodic release is terrible.

So if you feel the urge to beat the game after your first taste you CANT! You have to wait another 6 months before you can do that. Always online DRM so

And this is not the first time this company won't let me enjoy a game I just both. Last year I got Just Cause 3, and it was a huge disappointment to me. Mostly because it sucked, but the always online requirement certainly didn't help. Hitman, on the other hand, I really liked, but I can't play it because I keep getting disconnected from the servers.

And i generally don't like downloadable games. I much prefer physical discs. Anyway, being a Hitman fan i purchased the intro pack to test the waters. And what a mistake that was! The game doesn't even work half the time. It freezes and crashes on the title screen and kicks you from the servers while playing. You can sink ages into the level only for it to kick you from the game and not save your progress, forcing you to start all over again. Then the developers, IO Interactive said that this game wouldn't require an internet connection to play it, that it wouldn't be an always online game. They made this clear. However, it IS an always online game and DOES require an internet connection to play the single player campaign. If you want to unlock weapons etc and keep them, you have to be connected to the internet! Yup, you cannot even used scoped weapons unless you have the game connected to the internet. Then the game doesn't even stay connected to the internet half the time. So, i feel really let down by the developers lies to sell this game and the entire download only and bizarre release model. I will be pursuing a full refund as the game simply isn't fit for purpose. After the disastrous Hitman Absolution, i really didn't think it could get any worse. But it has, it has gotten much worse. I dunno man it's some boring stuff that feels like a real step back to basics. Feels like the recycling of a franchise rather than a reinvention. Doesn't seem properly optimised at all, also its online menus are clunky and when it finally loads blacks are washed out shade of grey

I suppose this is what they get for releasing episodically, beginning with a fairly bland and generic stage arrogantly titled 'The Showstopper' but then they charge €15 for this one stage probably knowing people will not be returning so that's a good 1/4 of the full game price secured at least.......

And up until the point where I downloaded it I knew very little about it, other then it was a new hitman game..I was prepared for absolution all over again but I couldn't have been any more wrong..

This game feels almost like a natural continuation of blood money. It's Hitman at it's best.. I can't say enough good things about it.. I gave it a 9 and not a 10 only because the load times are a bit much at times (PS4) But It's not game breaking in anyway..

This is a truly rich, and dense game, and only having the one mission lets you truly explore the level and replay it over and over again.. there are literally dozens of ways to complete the mission.. With past games blood money for example I always found myself playing a mission for about 20 minutes and after finding the target rush through and complete it as quickly as possible to move onto the next level... But with the way the new game has gone episodic it eliminates that feeling of rushing through to move on.. You can fully appreciate every detail of the world.

    First- the good
-The missions are back to the blood money style. Large open maps stuffed full of details and avenues of approach.
-The graphics are AMAZING, it really sells the experience
-The many modes of the game make for a surprising amount of content for the intro into a chapter series. It is worth the 15 hours and depending on how much you enjoy Hitman games- you could get 25+ hours out of it
-Gear purchasing/earning is back. You can earn items to take with you on missions. Again, the resembles blood money more so than absolution, however it is slightly different from Blood Money. You earn gear by complementing missions certain ways- which adds to replay-ability. It works well though
-Love all the ways to "dispose" of targets
-The weapons handle great, the core systems of the game are splendid

    Now for the bad things
-The story presented in this part of the game is rather weak. It is clear that the missions are to be the main focus and not the story. This could change with upcoming chapters though, so this may be rushed judgement. Again though, at this point in time there isn't enough going on within the story to keep me coming back for that reason
-The NPCs can be DUMB and there are also some bugs (not really bugs so much as mistakes) that allow you to take advantage of the games systems. If a guard is looking at a table that has a gun on it and you want that gun you can stand behind the guard and still get the gun. Meaning you can be 5 feet away from the item and still pick it up. To top it off the guard will not notice. This is just one example though- there are certainly more.

In summary Hitman is back! The glory days of big open maps, tons of assassination methods, and customizing gear have returned. The game looks great and plays even better. However, the weak story, stupid NPCs, and certain bugs can take you away from an otherwise immersive experience.

In the start of the game, you get to go through Agent 47's training missions as the Agency is testing him to see if they should recruit him. Then, 20 years later, your in Paris and it's been revealed that Agent 47 is the best of the best when it comes to being a Hitman.
    Mechanics:
Hitman (2016) is a stealth-action game that will be released periodically throughout this year. The stealth in this game is great, taking from Blood Money's fantastic mechanics and big open areas. The stealth is fantastically well done. Although, when you accidentally get caught "in the act" of killing someone or knocking someone out, it's a bit too easy to escape the people that caught you and just change disguises and then they just won't notice. The AI is also very well done, the have designated paths that they keep repeating over and over again, which makes them a bit repetitive, but it also makes sense. Though, I must say, the loading times can sometimes be horrendous (though not as bad as say Skyrim on PS3).
    Graphics and Audio.
The graphics of this game are really well done. While, at times, some textures may look a bit jagged and also right after loading the game, the textures may be a bit off, when it works and has loaded properly, the game is breathtaking. When you're on that Paris mission, if you look off of a balcony into the city, you get enraptured into the atmosphere of the game. The sky is amazing, the people are very well done, and just all in all, the game is great looking. The audio is also very well done. Upon first starting up the game, I had no problems with the audio balancing, as it seems that the rest of the audio softens whenever someone is talking, which makes it very easy to hear them.
    Bonus:
The business model. Now, some may argue that this business model for a game such as this doesn't make any sense at all, since it's released episodically. But I think that it does make sense. Honestly, because there's time between each contract in in game time, so putting time between episodes is a good thing. Plus, they probably already have the levels done, but this gives them time to enhance the contracts to make them the best they can be. Honestly, I'd rather have this than no Hitman at all or another Absolution on our hands.
    Overall:
Overall, this game is great. Despite the business model and the loading times, it's great. Due to this, I would have to give it a 9.5 and then just round it up to a 10. This doesn't mean that it's a perfect game, because honestly there is no perfect game, but it is better than it's predecessor, Absolution, with each level's depth and variety. It's a bit of a mix of Blood Money and Absolution, which makes it great! It's got Blood Money's mechanics and level design, but it's built off of Absolution's graphics and has a bit of story-telling. This game is very good. Now if you want the physical version, you'll have to wait until next year for that, but if you couldn't wait like me, you'll get the digital version. Also, if you don't have internet, I wouldn't recommend getting this, because the entirety of the game revolves around having an internet connection. Anyways, if you liked Blood Money and/or Absolution, you'll definitely love this awesome and fantastic game.

Hitman has some serious problems. It gets a few things right, but is that enough to make up for its sometimes monumental, game-killing failings? So, what did they get right? The expansive and detailed sandbox level design (at least in the one real level that comes with the intro pack) is excellent. Lots of options on your approach and execution of targets (not mention actual targets this time around!). Similar to older Hitman titles, there is an interesting but vague story that is wisely kept in the background. Contracts Mode is back, which was the best part about Hitman: Absolution. Improved movement and melee combat options (though 47 is still a little stiff, not to mention reliant on quicktime events rather than good mechanics and hit detection). The guns feel good. It's certainly the best looking Hitman game so far. Some basic fixes are a welcome change: having a map, the ability to close doors, AI that doesn't turn paranoid just because you have the same outfit. In a lot of ways, the new Hitman is a solid improvement over Absolution. However, the developers really dropped the ball in a few areas. The biggest problem is optimization; the underlying structure of the game is disturbingly bad, like seeing a new mansion being built on a flimsy old cinderblock foundation. Load screens are really, really long, and even though there is only one real level to load so far, you must completely reload the entire level each time you load your previous saved game. Even just pressing pause and sifting through menus creates surprisingly long loads. This is a killer for a game built around experimentation and stealth--one wrong move, or an experiment that doesn't pan out so well, and you'll be forced to load your game. If you know that's a two minute ordeal, it actually encourages you not to experiment, just because it means staring at a load screen instead of playing. There are some framerate issues as well, but this is a minor complaint compared to the load screens, which is pretty much a game killer. The online nature of the game is the next biggest issue. Though you can play offline, a significant amount of very important features are disabled, like detailed reports, challenges, Contracts Mode, and unlockables. However, I haven't been able to complete a mission while online yet, as I seem to lose connection within 3-8 minutes of logging on. The game launched to server issues, par for the course these days, and I'm writing this during the first week of release, so one would assume they will fix these issues. However, the real problem is that a lost server connection boots you from your game. Which means another really long load screen and lost progress. Which all seems completely unnecessary. There is no need for constant connectivity, as there are no other players in your world; when you finish a level, you could just as easily upload the raw data results of your playthrough with a very brief connection. I finished the first mission offline, but missed out on all the in game rewards because of the connectivity issues. What a huge disappointment, and some serious face-palming over the game design. However, the biggest problem with Hitman is the release strategy. It boils down to: release a shell of a game, with very limited content and serious structural problems, for full price, with the promise of fixing/adding to it over the next 1-2 years (Destiny, anyone?). This forces anyone who buys the game during the first year to pay full price to do beta testing. Assuming the company actually fixes the game during that time, those who buy in at year 2 will usually get to pay a discounted price for a finished game. This allows developers to get games to market quicker and sell them at full price for longer, but it basically screws their loyal fans--like me. The previous Hitman games all had issues, but by the same token, all have been highly polished, completed games. This new Hitman title is neither polished nor completed. I paid my $60 out of loyalty to the series, but I'm feeling a bit cheated so far. Calling a game like Hitman "Episodic" is not quite honest. It's just unfinished. And that really sucks. The developers have set themselves up for a very tricky gambit. Will they actually fix this game? Will the promised content be good? Will they reduce the load screens so I can actually experiment in this cool sandbox they built? If they succeed, then at best, their loyal fans are bitter over their tactics. If they fail, they've alienated the fanbase of a hugely successful IP. Maybe in six months, Hitman will get better reviews? I hope so, as I'd still like to play it. At this point, it is a mostly unplayable beta. I hope the increased sales are worth it for the publishers, but it seems very short sighted and damaging to the brand to sell half broken, unfinished games. Expand

Hitman Paris is the first part of the new episodic hitman series.
You’re introduced with a prelude that introduces the story and agent 47 you’re are sent through a brief tutorial with a final test to let you play with your skills.
Much like the past hitman games, there are multiple ways to kill your targets, you can collect poison, add it to a food or drink, use explosives, mess with objects, and to get to various sections of a map you of course have to steal disguises…
This is where things get a little frustrating…
Disguises will almost always give you away if you’re too close to npcs wearing the same outfit as you, which makes sense since you would think they would recognize their coworkers, but the frustration comes in because in some locations only certain uniforms are allowed without you just getting shot at,
which kind of defeats the purpose of a disguise,
Either get shot at as soon as you trespass or power walk from someone who find you suspicious until they shoot you
And you can’t really turn this into a 3rd person shooter like you could in absolution, because 3 shots and you’re dead…
if you raise any suspicion at all you’re surrounded…
This could maybe be fixed if they only become suspicious if you stick around for a while rather than just stay in their line of sight...
    Which is another frustration...
The first 2 maps are crawling with enemies, everyone has someone watching them….
You can’t really tell if you’re in someone’s line of sight until it’s too late…
I’m actually almost 100% sure that you’re in someone’s line of sight at all times
enemies for the most part just stand there, which leaves your stealth combat options practically useless…
you’re almost forced to use environmental opportunities
I feel handcuffed to trying to beat the game the way it wants me to, rather than feeling like I’m being dropped into an area with a few tools to do as I please….
And when I say area, I mean area…
You can buy the game upfront for $60, buy the first pat for $15 and every episode afterwards for $10
And for that $15 initially you get to create contracts to challenge the online community (fair warning though, a crappy internet connection isn’t going to cut it), 2 story contract missions and a tutorial.
That’s right, hitman Paris is One. Single. Mission.
This game relies on replay value.
The tutorial makes this clear by actually making you replay the tutorial a different way.
And the trophies make this clear by asking you to try and complete all of the different opportunities.
This is what they want you to do.
Take this one map and take out your targets in as many ways as you can.
I will say though that the map is crawling with life, it is really cool to explore the massive event going on that is this Paris fashion show, and figuring out how you’re going to pull off assassinating 2 targets and escaping without being killed yourself….
Especially with how difficult and annoying the enemies in and around every corner can make it
    You’re up for a stealthy challenge here…
While I personally don’t find myself replaying the same map to change my approach over and over..
Or to even take out a different target
I can see how fans of the stealth genre could enjoy such a thing
    I giver Hitman Paris a 7.5/10

Once you get into the main game this all changes. The environment is huge and the graphics are beautiful. My only two gripes are that you need a constant net connection which is unnecessary - surely a connection could be used for menus alone without carrying it into the game where a disconnection screws everything up? Second concern is this episodic release schedule. It makes no sense. If it means they can tailor the next missions based on feedback this is a good thing but time will tell.

If you use metacritic to make your decisions be very wary of 0s and 10s.

Anybody who was dissapointed by linearity of Absolution can start celebrating. This is not just going back to the Hitman roots (Silent Assassin + Blood Money), but it is actually much deeper and better.

This Hitman entry is basically taking completelly new approach to mission design. Some people may hate it (there will be jsut few locations a probably very short story). Some will love it (you will get best Hitman misions to the date). basically new Hitman is not focussing on quantity (lots of small missions designed jsut for one contract), but on quality. I would say that new Hitman is not aiming to be Story driven game. But something like "open sandbox assassin simulator". Basically new maps are big, non-linear, full of kill oportunities, scripted events. It jsut feels like a living world.

So basically these new maps are not suitable just for one story mission. But for wide range of non-campaign side missions of different kinds (Contracts, Escallation, IO created contracts, Ellusive targets,..)

This is probably most import thing about this game. If you want to finish each map once and continue, you will be really dissapointed with the length of the game (and you will miss maybe over 50% of the content). This is a game with maps designed to be played multiple times with different settings (new targets,...) and different approaches (I was really surprised just by how many was you can finish the main mission.)

So fi you are not looking just to binge play the story, but for the great gameplay that will offer you more freedom, than any other stealth game (really, the amount of options is amazing) this is a game for you. I spent maybe over 10 hours in Paris missions and still having a blast.

This game is like just putting the tip in.. Its good but won't make you climax. This business model sucks. I want to play some hitman, but instead im stuck replaying a single level.

Blood money is back in full strenght!! You have so many options how to play the game and kill your target. A lot of ppl complain about the crashes/bugs/low framerates etc but in my rig 2500k,16GB Ram, R9 280x the game runs smooth without aby drops - sometimes only shadows are flashing, but nothing dramatic..looking forward to another episode and I hope, it will be longer :)

this game is fantastic to play. i enjoying stealth and assassinate targets.. graphic is great. i am not sure if story is great because there are 7 episodes in whole game. i will rate story when i complete full game with 7 episodes. Enemies seem little smart and little dumb. Kudos to IQ devs

Pretty much prompts you through the whole thing, you don't need to think about anything. Brilliant game if you're a perfectionist and like to play the same thing over and over. However my personal opinion... If a game isn't finished, push it back and wait until it is. 2 hours of my life I'm never getting back.

The Hitman franchise is pretty cool, i freaking love Hitman Absolution, so i was a bit disappointed with this one, while it is pretty good, it isn't as goods the previously mentioned Absolution, this game's AI is not very good and it has a very different tone, but its not bad at all, it has huge scenarios with lots of possibilities, and is overall an great experience!

even for being episodic, this game has its technical achievements, mostly on the NPC's AI, the graphics, the choices, etc, it's so elegant, glad square-enix is the publisher on this on.

This is a very good start to the Hitman trilogy with the massive Paris map and a few tight tutorial missions as well as introducing contracts.

I'm going to focus on the game itself, and ignore the controversy surrounding the episodic release of this game.

I'm reviewing "Hitman: Season 1" here since I can't seem to find a metacritic page for the Steelbook edition of season 1 that I bought. I should clarify that I'm a huge fan of the previous games. So, I "gave this game a chance" more than I would most games. Hitman: Season

I'm reviewing "Hitman: Season 1" here since I can't seem to find a metacritic page for the Steelbook edition of season 1 that I bought.

I should clarify that I'm a huge fan of the previous games. So, I "gave this game a chance" more than I would most games. Hitman: Season 1 advertises itself as more of a return-to-form than "Hitman: Absolution", the previous title in the series. While it IS true that this game is a more traditional Hitman game that the previous title, it's not as fun as before. If anything it will make you appreciate the gameplay changes that were made to Hitman: Absolution.

(I'm going to be comparing this game to Absolution a lot, since it's the most logical game to compare it to)

First of all the levels....they're huge and teeming with activity. This sounds like a positive aspect of the game, and in most games it would be, but somehow this works against the fun of this game. Mostly because more than any other Hitman game, you're surrounded by witnesses. In Absolution, most levels were sparsely populated. That is how it should be imho. In Hitman: Season 1, the levels are absolutely congested with people. It just makes the game that much harder (and dips the framerate too, if we're honest)

Second of all, the combat. In previous incarnations of the Hitman series, if you found yourself in a tight jam or you got too frustrated with tailing a target you could use blunt force to beat the mission. You'd lose points for doing so, but the option was there. However, in Hitman: Season 1, Agent 47's health bar is tiny. I don't even think there IS a health bar. I'm guessing that they wanted to make the game as realistic as possible, but that was one of the ways they went too far with the realism. Another way was making the levels so densely populated that Agent 47 couldn't even sneeze without 18 people noticing.

Another thing I should mention is the AI, which is again, way too realistic. In previous Hitman games the NPCs had varying levels of predictability and followed these scripted "paths", so the player would usually have a good idea of where certain guards/targets/civilians would be at what time. Knowing roughly where the enemies would be at what time did make the games a bit easier, but there was still some challenge there.

In Hitman: Season 1, the non-target NPCs are far less predictable than any other Hitman game. Your target will have a somewhat predictable scripted path he'll take, but the other NPCs move at complete random. It just makes the game that much harder. Also making the game harder is the fact that you need certain tools to perform certain actions to kill your target. EXAMPLE: You see something that can drop on your target, you go to drop it (because it says DROP ITEM ON TARGET, etc) and it turns out you need a crowbar to do so. EXAMPLE 2: You walk over to poison your targets drink (because it says POISON DRINK) but you can't because you need poison to do it. This game really seems to love to tell you about the kills you could be making if you had the missing items.

I'm kind of in a rush, so I'll try to sum up my feelings on this game in a paragraph.

This game takes what made Hitman good, and **** it all up. The levels are too big, the AI too unpredictable and too eagle-eyed, the levels too crowded, there's no plot to speak of, and the frantic combat that ensued after a noisy or botched assassination attempt (which was so fun in the previous games) is just gone. This game is like a turd wrapped in gold--you think it's going to be a great Hitman game but then you realize it's just kind of **** And boring. This game is boring if you play it they way they want you to.

EDIT: 6-4-2018 I should note that this is the game that made me finally decide to tell my PS4. Not that it would have been any better on xbone.

First and foremost, Hitman isn't a bad game by any means. It looks good, plays well, and is actually quite clever. However, the delivery is absurd. Episodic? Really? A huge game that fit on a original PlayStation disc releases episodically on a PlayStation 4 Blu-Ray disc! I know you are here to find out whether Hitman is good or not, I'm sorry I just had to get that off my chest. Anyway Hitman does have it's moments and in it's defense you could get quite a bit out of one episode by trying an infinite number of ways to complete a mission. That said, with all the FULL AND COMPLETE games out or coming out this game will probably not be worth your time. Expand

It's a really good game, but the current episode is very short, only having 3 missions. I think the only reason it's getting a low score here is that people don't seem to realize that this is an episodic game. The next episode will be out soon, so just be patient and there will be more to this game. It's a very short game for what it is at the moment, but what's already there is great. I love this game, and even after beating the episode, I keep coming back to it. Don't pass this one up, folks.

    Hitman gets a 7/10.

Also another thing which I strangely haven't seen mentioned anywhere else is that you are in Paris or Italy (Episode 2) and nearly no one speaks the countries language. It ruins the whole environment they have build (with the nice graphics etc.) as every dialogue is in English. They didn't even consider foreign accents (the voice actors mostly have heavy British or American accents). Expand
