This game takes about 6-8 hours and I can recommend it.
The told story, atmosphere and the sound are impressive.

The first 2 hours I was not amazed with this game because it felt like a walking simulator but the second half felt downright awesome. The Gameplay mechanics are more or less basic but it there is so much creepy awesome stuff going on... I was mesmerized at the end. A celtic warrior plagued by psychosis battles with the gods. Personally the blind trial and the sea of corpses were my favourite parts of the game.
    Would buy again.

This Phycological Horror/Hack N Slash/ Puzzle game had me on the edge of my seat for the entire 8-hour length of the game. Those genres might not sound like they would mix well and in some parts of the game, they really don't. The great narrative and boss fights make up for a lot of this game's shortcomings.

Story: The story follows a Viking warrior named Senua. She goes on a quest to resurrect her dearly beloved from the depths of hell. There is only one problem, she has a mental illness called psychosis and the quest she is going on is a figment of her imagination brought by her illness and the story of Noric God's she was told when she was very little. It's an interesting concept not explored in many forms of media and it makes for an engrossing story.

Gameplay: The gameplay is broken up into two different styles, puzzles and sword combat. Puzzle have you manipulate the world around you, due to your illness, to solve sections of this game. The puzzle work well around the subject matter but a few puzzle near the end of the game have ludicrous solutions that made me want to toss my controller at the screen. Other than the last few puzzle, most are fairly simple, some have a few gimmicks but most standard and average puzzles are at play here. The sword combat is more simplistic than the puzzles. You have a standard light/heavy attack, parry, slow down time move and evade move. That's all there is to the combat. Combat looks and controls great but mixed in with basic controls and very few enemy types (except for the bosses) combat can get old quick. This is not much of a problem though because the game ends before it over stays it welcome. The gameplay is serviceable and works with the game well, it just has minor problems.

Technical: The presentation is spot on for an independently released game. The graphics are gorgeous and rivals top notch visuals from AAA games like Horizon: Zero Dawn and Uncharted 4: A Theif's End. The sound design for this game is only meant to be experienced with headphones. You hear the inner sounds of the main character head and makes you feel like you are going crazy with her. I am normally not phased by gruesome imagery or with horror in general but this game made me feel a horror I have never felt within a game before. What this game does on a technical level, is something I have never witness in a game before.

Conclusion: On a technical level, the atmosphere, the story, the way the game makes you feel like the main character, it on near masterpiece level. Unforchantly, mediocre combat, and annoying final puzzles hold this game back from 9 or even 10/10. I would still highly recommend this game to anyone who is interested in the material being covered or the story in general. Just Be warned that the subject matter in the game is a very taboo subject, so play at your own risk. If you can get passed the passable gameplay and a very taboo story, there is something special here.

Honestly I don't where to begin. The atmosphere, the sound, the plot....It is a genuine work of art. When it comes to narrative I put it up there with God of War. At first I thought the whole simulated psychopathy thing would be just a gimmick but it is literally the foundation of the game's atmosphere and it will truly mess you up. Voices coming from every direction, teasing you, questioning you, scaring you, feeding you false information and sometimes the right information so often you need to trust them. There is a lot of truth to the main criticism of the game which is the repetitiveness of the combat and the lack of enemy variation but you become so gripped to the story and intensity of the puzzles that you gladly forgive it. Thank you Ninja Theory for such an incredible game. Expand

Yes I applauded Ninja Theory when they said they were attempting to make a AA game that could compete against the AAA market (yet they sold out to Microsoft not a year after with grins on their faces) but be better than the indie market. However, I then played this game and boy did I not know what I was getting into and the marketing for this game was designed so you wouldn’t know that this is not a game after all.

At first I looked at this game like ‘oh this is how they saved some money here or there’ but the further you get into the game, you realize that what they really did was cut corners. They had one of their workers be Senua and do the motion capture and voice. The other characters? Well they don’t really exist in game, in that if you hear the voice of the couple other ‘characters’ that supposedly exist Senua turns around to face the screen, staring straight at you, which is terribly off-putting and 4th wall breaking, all because they didn’t want to animate anyone else. And then there’s some weird SEGA CD video being put in for the 2 men she knew. A video recording next to Senua who is a game generated person.

No more needs to be said on the mental illness factor, by now we all know they consulted with top people in the mental health field, I mean it’s all Ninja Theory told us over and over!!! But is anything actually told or learned about this supposed mental illness Senua is dealing with? Nope. It was just used as a selling factor and boy did people eat it up just based on that. How sad. The voices are more annoying than anything. The best part of the game was when the voices stopped. The real mental thing that happens in this game is that you’re trying to hold onto your own sanity to finish this trash heap.

Not enough people have commented on gameplay. I don't know why but Ninja Theory decided to not have any sort of tutorials whatsoever, including simple little prompts that pop up on screen to tell you what the buttons do. Now this wasn't my first rodeo so I wasn't completely lost but when the first thing the game wants you to do is 'focus' and you either have to pause the game to look at the button controls or start pushing every button on the controller to see what will happen, it pulls you out of the experience a bit. Warning: Senua’s run is as fast as a character in a real game’s walk and she gets stuck with ladders quite a few times and you have to figure out how to mess with the buttons to force her up and down them.

Not to mention combat. The button response time felt like it needed work. I'd be hitting dodge or block and nothing would happen, resulting in me getting hit and at a disadvantage as I tried to recover so I could move before another hit took place. But with the no button prompts comes the fact that if you're doing good enough eventually you'll see this white symbol appear, where you're like I wonder what that is? Well game won't tell you. But if you accidentally hit focus during that moment, you enter into bullet time mode that slows down the enemies and lets you do a lot of damage before they can attack you. Then you get to the parts where the enemies have multiple states and you can only attack them in bullet time so you waste time trying to perfectly dodge to build up focus. All trying to pad time onto the game.

The puzzles start out okay. It seems like two different ones in a pretty big area until you continue past the first two bosses and it becomes the same ‘line up the symbols’ puzzle over and over and OVER again. Not only that but it becomes where you just turn around and go ‘oh there it is’. No work needed, how fricking lazy. Would it really have been that hard to toss a few different type puzzles to open doors? Answer: no, no it wouldn’t have been.

No memorable music. The only good music is the end battle song and the end credits song, neither of which were made for the game which makes sense. Music wasn't made to put you in the setting, not when the voices were too loud to hear anything else anyways. Speaking of which I could not hear the characters speak for the life of me. I turned down music and vfx and it didn't make a difference. Who releases a game without having made sure you can hear what's going on?

The ending spits in your face, there is no boss fight, you never go against Hella and the multiple enemies you fight? There’s no point, the game wants you to die to trigger the awful ending cutscene. (Just die, don’t fight!!) It’s especially terrible with the ending line 'I have no more story to tell' then immediately says 'come join me for another adventure'. They want a sequel! Of this non-game!

Do NOT buy this 'game'. Don't be tricked like I was. This was nothing more than an art project to Ninja Theory, it was never meant to be played or experienced as a story. You will not care a lick about the characters because the creators sure didn’t. The worst 8 hours of ‘gaming’ I’ve ever done.

The puzzles (if you can call them that) mostly involve searching for different angles to look at things, and combat is extremely repetitious and tries (and fails utterly) to challenge the player simply by throwing waves and waves of similar enemies at them. Initially, the idea of mental illness as the focus of the game's story seems intriguing, but it becomes apparent very quickly that this topic is ill-suited for a video game as it weakens player immersion greatly. This happens mainly because at every turn, we are reminded that Senua's experiences are a result of her mental illness, and are not "real". Furthermore, Senua's backstory is mostly not "shown" but just "told", which makes it even more difficult for the player to identify with the character. Honestly, given the gameplay and story deficiencies, I am quite surprised at the good score this game gets here in Metacritic. Expand

Hell-blade offers is a developer branching out and approaching mental illness through this medium which is something that hasnt really been done on this scale before, they have done the research and the finished product is beautiful and painful representation of someone going through psychosis.

    Headset is an absolute must.

Outside of the underlying theme the gameplay is solid, the puzzles while straightforward add to the theme of the game so it never feels like you are doing something for the sake of doing something, the battle system is simple but intuitive, even though the battles themselves are repetitive the ever looming thought of perma death makes things slightly more intense.

I wouldnt change a lot in this game, Ninja Theory have achieved something here that should be used as starting point for someone building a story driven game,

Going from point A to point B to see a story with limited interaction or gaming. This is exactly what Hellblade is about...They would have made a 3D movie with this story, I would have given a 80% easy and be absolutely delighted. I give this a 55% because they did something interesting in terms of story, especially regarding mental problems. But I find the gaming side appalling and just ordinary... Expand

Amazing experience, really enjoyed the game, but found the battle system a little awkward and only got the hang of it in the final fight. The puzzles were wonderful and creative, and the over lap of Senua's story with the Nordic myths was lovely. There were a few little game play things (again mostly related to combat but not all) that bugged me, but nothing deal breaking.

The game succeeds in making the game ABOUT mental illness, and portrays it well. The game does not succeed in being fun or interesting. It is near a walking simulator. Combat, when it does happen, is basic, and short. The game is more concerned with forcing you to watch suffering of Senua and others rather than actually tell a story.

Bottom line: If I wanted to watch a snuff film I would have. The game is more concerned with portraying mental illness then giving me gameplay worthy of a 30 dollar price tag. It isn't worth that. It's worth maybe ten, for what your geting.

Wait until it goes on sale, or if you want something light and fun, pass entirely. The game tries to be a train-wreck where you cant look away, but I felt myself alt-tabbing more than any other game built on atmosphere I've ever played.

Unfortunately, for every good I could identify, there always seems to be some fault that, in my opinion, hold this title back.

Graphics for instance: the character models are EXCELLENTLY DONE but the environment (short draw distance, texture pop-ins etc) is surprisingly shoddy. I played it on a PS4 Pro so perhaps you can attribute this to the hardware (or the lack thereof) but if God Of War managed to look stunning (both character models and environment) on the exact same PS4 Pro, then I think the blame lies squarely on the developers. Don't get me wrong, it is still miles better than anything Ubisoft could produce but that's also why I bought Hellblade at full price and Watch Dogs at 95% off.

Another example: combat. When I first began my journey as Senua, I loved the combat mechanics. I wouldn't say it's the best but it was surprisingly solid (and not just a button-mash fest). But as I fought more and more enemies, it became apparent that most of them have only been programmed to perform 3/4 actions (some in a certain sequence as well). What that meant was that fights became boring and (especially if you manage to not die, which is not hard considering the repetitive AI mechanics) extremely laborious. What was initially fun ended up feeling like a chore.

The voice acting as well. Usually when voice actors/ actresses fail to perform, we blame it on the script. But in this instance, I feel the blame lies either on the sound director (or whoever chose the voice actors/ actresses) as well as the actors/ actresses themselves. The two that caught my mind in particular are Dillion and Senua (great visual performance for the latter, the voice though I felt didn't carry enough weight).

I can go on and list other observations I've made but I think by this stage (if you've managed to read through what I've written) you should already have a gist of what I'm talking about. So all in all, I am disappointed. The game is not a bad game, not at all. But it had so much potential to be so much greater. Reminds me a bit of The Order 1886.

The game itself seems to want to make some statement about insanity, but just what that is remains a mystery. Walking endlessly and fighting enemies every so often is hardly entertaining. This game has nice graphics, but lacks any quality beyond that. Its only saving grace was the throwaway price. That is exactly what I did with it.

I've been gaming since 1985 and gaming in recent years has become very stale. That is until British developers Ninja Theory gave us HellBlade: Senua's Sacrifice. This is made by a team of just 16 people yet has AAA productions for a price of just £24.99. The graphics are pretty amazing, especially the character models, lighting, reflections and atmosphere. Some things like rocks and trees can have low res textures, but it doesn't really take anything away from how well polished this game is. The atmosphere of the game is a thing of beauty and really sucks and draws you into it. This is also helped by the impressive sound quality and voice acting. Gameplay wise it is pretty basic and is a mix of solving puzzles and sword play. The sword play is fun and fluid even if easily mastered. The puzzles take me back to games of the early 90's when games were harder. Finding and lining up symbols to unlock gates can sometimes be a bit of a chore but the game does let you know when you're on the right track, as it gives off cool red symbols that appear and float about all over the screen to let you know you are close. Not so when having to repair something like a staircase though. You have to figure that out by yourself and while i personally like it i can see some people getting frustrated by it and finding it hard. But if you have been around gaming since the 80's and 90's when games were harder you will more than likely enjoy this aspect of the game compared to all the modern dumbed down games of today. There is that sense of challenge and achievement when completing a puzzle which allows you to move forward in the game. There's no rushing through here. Other puzzles include remembering short paths to escape and the highlight for me is the alternative world puzzles. You walk through certain markers or look through certain objects and they will open up routes you couldn't previously see. Some of these are very subtle like a new route will appear that wasn't there before, or a bridge appearing, wall vanishing opening up a new path to complete a puzzle. Or the entire world scenery will change from dark blue, glum and rainy to bright and sunny as you have to keep switching back between the two to progress through a level and solve puzzles as some routes will only appear when it is dark, rainy and glum and others will only appear when it is sunny. The story is pretty good but what makes it interesting is Senua's mental health problems. She suffers psychosis and hallucinations so you're never quite sure what is real and what isn't. You hear the voices in her head which either encourage her, go against her, or guide her. They can be quite harrowing but can also be quite humorous. The voices in her head made me feel genuinely sorry for her and for the people out there that suffer this horrific mental health problem. But it also made me root for her and i desperately wanted to do right by Senua and guide her down the right paths. And as much as i enjoyed playing such a dark game i got great pleasure when seeing Senua experiencing something joyful like a joyful hallucination that put her in a good place and showed off the innocence of her character, the real her. She is a great character and will go down as one of the most memorable characters in a video game. This is a brilliant game and just £24.99. Contender not just for game of the year but game of this generation. Expand

When I concede the point, I am not speaking of 'graphics' -- much too small a word to convey the various immersive elements Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice excels at. This effort is beautifully photo-realistic and lovingly rendered with art direction that is at once daunting and aloof, allowing the player to share in Senua's sense of penetrating a foreign and hostile hellscape, but it is also intricate and personal, as Senua reacts and flinches, balks and lunges at her own personal demons given form in another culture's landscape and mythology before her. But, those are just the visual elements. The sound design is perhaps some of the best I have ever played through. Unlike so many games, the music is not so omnipresent that it becomes a character unto itself competing with the one I am controlling, rather it is utterly organic to the experience Senua is having. It so flawlessly punctuates the game play that I only noticed how well it was carrying me emotions when I had to mute my TV to answer a call. The mind-expanding surround of Senua's psychotic voices so mimic psychosis in the real world that there is a psychiatric caution preceding the game, similar to those that other games have for epilepsy patients. If you suffer psychosis, this game might be too 'real' for you. And, that is brought to bear with technical mastery in the sound mixing of this game. The principal character's psychotic voices speak from all directions, to her, to themselves, to each other, even to you. I turned on subtitles to get some distance from it myself, not that I was about to think any of Senua's voices in her head were my own, but just to be sure. You can insert a nervous laugh here, and if you were playing, you'd be hearing one as it circled behind you. Yes, this game is art. But, one does not play art. This is also a game. And, unfortunately, it is in game mechanics that I had to start deducting points from what would otherwise be a 10. The game is brief all-told. Playing it, you will guide Senua through a series of environments in which she does the same several exploration puzzle-solving maneuvers over and over. You will face several Vikings and have combats that look great, owing to beautifully realized motion-capture. Then you will fight a boss with a pattern of attack you must memorize in order to counter it in a few specific ways. The duration and complexity of each of these puzzle areas, and the duration and complexity of each boss's attack sequence will increase, otherwise you'll be doing the same several things through only enough different environments that you can feel the repetition begin to weigh on the game. And, then it will end, having given you less than 24 total hours diversion, less than 12 if you're good, about 6 if you're great. The artistry of the game should not be minimized, and the game is worth the retail price just to experience it, but set your expectations to that level. You will be playing interactive art, more than you will be playing a game, and it will only take as long as visiting a good museum. Expand

With that said, this game suffers from a lack of execution despite the overabundance of creativity. This could have easily been a game on my iPad. The only innovative feature is the story, which I respect and appreciate. The combat is repetitive and grows tiring quickly. There is nothing interesting about this game from the perspective of gaming. It would be a great animated movie. This is a step in the right direction, but too many miscues for me to recommend.

Senuas Sacrifice is a psychological action adventure game with a dash of horror elements.
Here you play Senua, a Pict warrior battling her way through Helheim to rescue the soul of a man that loved her…
But you’re not on this journey alone...
The games focus is mental illness…
And I feel the game does a great job of this... of filling you with constant anxiety
as you journey you’ll hear voices…
    These voices never leave you...
They’re constantly going, whispering the way you should be going while at the same time telling you to go back, they’ll encourage you and discourage you, these voices were probably my favorite part of the game, and because of them I played the entire game with headphones…
letting them whisper to me as id fight and solve puzzles…
this is a very linear game that takes around 7 hours to complete,
You’ll be going through this gorgeous world and frequently be stopped by a gate…
On this gate are symbols... its then up to you to find the symbols in the world to unlock the gate…
Turning this into a perspective puzzle game...
The screen will start filling with the symbol when its near, you then can focus to find it, and then it’s onto the next symbol…
And to stop this from getting tedious the game will add different elements to each section, such as portals that will take away a section of an area, or add to it, fix a broken bridge or staircase..
Constantly keeping the game feeling fresh and new...
Along your way you’ll run into lorestones that will tell you the story from Norse mythology.
These can be cleverly hidden as well giving you incentive to explore…
My least favorite part of this game however is its combat...
There as boss battles which I actually really enjoyed...
But I didn’t enjoy the combat encounters with smaller enemies…
the combat at first feels cinematic, you have a regular attack, heavy, and melee to break shields, you can block and doge, and you’re able to focus to temporarily slow down time...
But the game just throws way too many enemies at you to defeat in these thankfully rare moments...
The multiple enemies don’t necessarily make things hard, especially thanks to the voices telling you to look out before an enemy can strike you…
the fights just drag on for too long most of the time killing the pace and emersion of the game…
The rest of the game however comes together perfectly…
You’ll feel all sorts of emotions, good and bad while playing this game, and there really is a beautiful story to be told here…
No matter the type of gamer you are, you owe it to yourself to pick this on up.
    I give Hellblade: Senuas Sacrifice
    a 9/10

So it definitely gets 10 for story, its depth and technical achievement. Its also visually superb and one of the most stunning games out there.

however sadly, the gameplay does not follow suit. While it achieves a lot for being a indie developer. Ninja Theory has a proven track record of being able to develop high quality mainstream titles i.e DmC, Heavenly and enslaved. So for the core gameplay to fall behind its story/visuals it sadly could of been better.

its a very linear on rails game with some good puzzles and interesting, engaging set pieces (the burning house springs to mind)

the combat is also good to a degree, while it does get very repetitive and lacks variety both in terms of mechanics and enemy types. its a very visually realistic combat system and is original in its concept.

it gets a 8 because while it has amazing visuals, technical achievement and storytelling it lacks the gameplay depth to suit, which causes it to become repetitive and lacking of variety very quickly.
it has a few really memorable moments. and achieves its target of raising mental awareness and successfully converted the idea of psychosis into a video game.

This game is somewhat short, but for 30 dollars on release day, I'd say its well worth a play through. There are no side quests in this game, and the level design is pretty linear. It all seems to come together and work pretty well though. The story is intense and exciting, while draining and deeply interesting. The audio in this game is really something innovative and fresh. I really recommend having a good set of headphones if you plan to play this game.

The actual game play consists of puzzle solving and vivid, flashy combat. Its probably some of the best looking sword combat I've seen in a game to date. And as a whole, the game is very well presented with fantastic visuals throughout. Beyond that, there's not really not much else to this game. It tells a brutal story filled with norse mythology and it does it well.

    Pros:
    -great innovative audio
    -exciting flashy combat
    -interesting and engrossing story
-well worth the price of 30 dollars on release
    -fantastic visuals
    -No bugs that I noticed

    cons:
    -short
-somewhat simple gameplay with no sidequests, leveling, inventory, or progression system

As for the puzzles, in the first couple of hours I felt they were hurting the pacing of the story a little bit ,but once I started paying attention to sounds and visual cues, they were pretty straightforward for the most part, but I could see others not being a fan of them. You'll understand why they were implemented like that when you watch the bonus documentary they included in the game. Again, Hellblade is not for everyone, but if you appreciate the effort to push storytelling in videogames, you should really check this out.

This is the best indie game that have ever played and is a full proof that money isn't everything what it takes to have sucess into some work. The biggest right thing about this hole game is the immersiveness that it provides for those who play, a lot of aspects that put you all the way inside of the game feeling like the characters, suffering or just watching. The game have a nice story that is presented to us during the journey that you gonna enjoy and feel with Senua, basically without spoiling anything, Senua needs to reach the goddess of death, Hela, to try something. Senua is a Celtic warrior that had her tribe annihilated by the vikings.
This game is based on the Norse mythology, and if you like and know it, surely, you will like this game a lot, you will recognize a bunch of aspects and dialogues that happens during the game, the characters tha show up and tell you something or that you gotta face it, and if you don't know the mythology, you will learn a lot, this game is culture as well. The collectibles of this game are the called lorestones, they will tell a little part of this Norse story and let you know a little more about their beliefs and culture at that time, wich was awesome.
The fact that Senua does have schizophrenia makes everything more interesting, because you may caught you asking if all of that is real, but for a schizophrenic person it is, even if that is all in her head, but it is. Sometimes when she looks at you, you feel like you are just one more ghost that it is in her head, and that was awesome.
The environment of the game are all just perfect, scenarios are all very well done, the details make everything so real and believable wich makes everything better. The sounds are other big deal in here, probably the best aspect of the hole game, you gotta play it with headsets on, the "3D sounds" make this game unique, the character of Senua, does have voices in her head, you hearing them from everywhere, and hearing the enviroment like rivers, bush and stuff, it is a big differential here. A lot of times you got scary because of all the aspects of the game working together, scenario and sounds, walking trought strange forests or full dark places.
The battle system is great, it isn't much complex but still very miscellaneous, letting you do combos, dodge, pary and all of that in a peculiar way, with the cam stuck and very close, you need to hear the voices in Senua's head to know when someone is getting to your back to attack you. All the boss battles are phenomenal, since the first one and until the last are all great and very creative, during some fights i just didn't want it to end cause of how badass that was, because of the visuals, the song and the fight itself, all gorgeous.
The puzzles that the game have are, in most, very good, somethings that really will put you in thinking mode and definely in searching mode, some things that are needed to open doors and stuff, you gott to find some templates to fit into the mold, and that worked out very well.
The camera got some tricks that maybe bother some people, but for me was a very smart way to put things in table. First of all the game posses no HUD at all, for me that was great, make things more realistic and to got yourself asking that things like "I think that he is almos done" but just for what you are seing in the battle, isn't the most commom thing these days and i did appreciated it a lot. The camera is very close and locked in the character, the movies are very limited, you could take this as a problem or, like me, think that is like a narrative resource to show how Senua is in the situations, without much to do or go, she is locked in her journey. During some cutscenes that the character is talking to someone, the camera goes straight to her face and she looks exactly to our face, like she is really talking to us in some moments, for me that was just great.
The big deal here is most likely the engagement that the developers had while doing the character of Senua, the study that they did with schizophrenia, taking interviews with doctors and patients to do it in the most perefect way as possible, the hallucinations and voices in this game are all formidable and well deserved, the story is great and the gameplay is also pretty well done. The interpretive and metaphoric final is great, giving to us some sort of teaching in how to deal with mourning.

I also personally hated the puzzles because I don't like puzzles at all in games, so not everyone will hate them. That's just me.
But even though the world was empty aside from enemies and puzzles, the story made up for it, and made me want to play on. If there was more to the world, the game would be awesome.
Also, when watching the behind the scenes stuff, it's super cool to learn that Senua was actually a goddess discovered in the early 21st century (Senuna).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is an example of how to do game development and marketing correctly! Ninja Theory have proven they know exactly what they are doing when it comes to Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice and they took a big risk in making a game with only a small team with a small budget but even more insane releasing the game at half the price.

Now let's talk about this game, it is phenomenal! I was kind of torn when I finished the game but the more I thought about it the more I adored it. It had me hooked, it made me care and it made me think which a lot of games don't really nail these days.

For those who don't know Hellblade is about a Celtic warrior named Senua who is suffering from psychosis, she hears multiple voices in her head, she sees things and is constantly fighting her mental breakdown. The breakdown happening because her husband died and she couldn't cope and for whatever reason is carrying his head around in her back pocket.

The visuals are stunning, this is possibly the best looking game I have ever experienced, the power of the Unreal Engine is on show here with this technical masterpiece.

The audio is top notch using new techniques such as using binaural microphones to capture the true feeling of audio moving without needing to use effects from an audio production software. The sounds are of multiple voices, one that encourages Senua and gives her hints like when to dodge in battle, one that is too scared and can't understand anything that helps by telling you to not go into places which of course is the way to go and one that puts her down at every chance, all of the voices argue with each other creating the feeling of constant noise you just want to escape from but can't.

The gameplay is a strange one, it's mostly a walking simulator combined puzzle game and every now and then there is some hack and slashy combat. The walking around part is mostly looking for symbols to open doors, I can understand why this puts people off and in fairness I wasn't too fond of this at first, the patterns being how mental health works... seeing patterns in things that don't have any hidden meaning, reading too deep between the lines, believing the world is out to get you kind of stuff. So in order to find these patterns you need to line up objects in the camera's view so you get a bridge, a tree, a fallen over beam and a birdhouse and it somehow creates the letter F in Senua's head. The main problem with this is that there's a few too many of these patterns to find across the entire game, and sometimes the game isn't very helpful when you're struggling. At one point I got so lost because according to the game I already found the solution to the puzzle but never triggered it so the game said something along the lines of "here it is" and I'm still looking like an idiot going "where? I can't bloody see it..."

The combat has a Dark Souls like quality to it without the caveats, it's slow and methodical attacking but there is no stamina meter and the game isn't ridiculously punishing by cheaply killing you all the time. It is tense and satisfying to get through, you feel like you are Senua truly fighting her inner demons. Speaking of death there is the threat of a permadeath feature but I would not be put off by it. The game teases that if you keep dying a cursed rot with take hold on Senua but I wouldn't worry so much about it, the game is easy enough for the most part, there was only one bit I struggled with towards the end of the game and even then there was no permadeath.

The enemies of this game look cool albeit short on variety, there are only 2 bosses but they look super cool, one of them has probably my favorite design of all time now, In the middle of the game you see an "enemy" that looks cool and I cried out loud "oh wow, I can't wait to fight this" and then you just don't... That was a let down because the reveal of it was so good.

The trophy list for those completionists out there is VERY easy, a single playthrough will get every trophy except one and it's even possible to get that in the first run. The only missable trophy is the collectables, the others are all story based which is nice to have an easy list but there is little replay value because there's no rewards. The game itself is short enough at roughly 8-9 hours long but I truly feel like it was the best £25 I've ever spent on a game in a long time and Ninja Theory get my support so long as they keep up this way of making games that aren't over priced DLC ridden experiences with loot boxes and microtransactions like the rest of the industry thinks it can rip off their customers with. These developers care and it shows in this product.

I encourage everyone to buy this game, support the true heroes of the industry and give this a playthrough, by far this is my game of the year with a perfect 10/10!

Some people set themselves up for disappointment, since Hellblade was made by the same developers as for example the recent Devil May Cry game. So let this be said. Hellblade is not Hack and Slash, but rather an immersive Action-Adventure with psychological horror elements. You are playing Senua, trapped on an island, suffering from mental disease(causing her to hear voices and twist her perception of reality in a very dark way). There is no hud, as you try to overcome obstacles, solve environmental puzzles and engage in combat to get closer to the goddess Hella.

If you didn't know already: Hellblade was developed on a tight budget with no big pubkisher interfering, and it shows (in a good way). The game doesn't follow many of the missteps of recent triple A games. There are no useless collectibles and the game feels very streamlined to it's core elements.
While gameplay maybe could have been expanded on a little bit, it's completely sufficiant to emtertain for the 8 hours it takes to complete the story.
Also the graphics are really impressive(maybe except for a few low res textures), especially when taking the limitations into account that they had to work around due to budget constraints.
Audio is unique and very immersive (but sadly only if you play on headphones).

All in all Hellblade may not be a huge innovator gameplay wise, but it is a very immersive and streamlined experience that reminds me of some of the great games from the PS2/PS3 era, where games didn't need to be 60 hours, open world, multiplayer and filled with stupid content just for the sake of it.
Hellblade is just a nice concept that was fleshed out into an 8 hour game with no season pass or other crap. Plus it is priced fairly at half the price of other AAA titles.
Due to it's unique presentation i think it is also a game that i'd really enjoy replaying maybe once a year (so overall playtime may end up closer to 15 hours or even 20, rather than 8)

there is something only one thing wrong with this game. the game is only in english, you can not dig completely in the game if you are not english speaker. The problem with this is that the best part in this games is put yourself under the skin of Senua, and feel her psychosis.

A tale of loss and sadness. With mental health as its focus and a binaural soundtrack to run with the game it is a true heart string tugger. Loved it, combat is excellent with no HUD, well worth a buy and all the credit in the world to the dev team. Good job, deserves your money.

Just wow, thank you Ninja Theory for for making a game about mental health. It was absolutly beautiful.

This is a great example of ideal game. You got a REAL main character who you really care about you got a mind blowing story you got one the most beautiful pictures today and you got a spectacular game play. This game is worth every penny for sure.

The intentions and ambitions for this game are great, however the execution lets it down very badly.

The story is intriguing, the atmosphere compelling and the audio disturbing, and that's the end of what I found positive. The puzzles form the main content of the game, and they are absolutely infuriating in their tedium and repetition. It is the exact same formula for each puzzle but

The puzzles form the main content of the game, and they are absolutely infuriating in their tedium and repetition. It is the exact same formula for each puzzle but the keys are placed is slightly different locations each time, meaning a lot of wandering around in badly lit areas. By the time I'd reached the third puzzle I had clocked on that this was what I could expect for the rest of the game and subsequently quit playing after just a couple of hours of gameplay.

I did find the combat somewhat enjoyable but again this became repetitive very quickly and enemies lacked diversity also.

The graphics are excellent but undermined by my above points. I was really looing forward to this game after hearing so many good things and am massively disappointed to have been met by what is essentially a walking simulator.

Beautiful graphics, amazing sounds, clever puzzles, very good fighting mechanics and above all a very bold scenario with impeccable story telling. This game is a true work of art, it challenges many things you know about video games. Please play it with headphones...

Boring plot, soapy graphics, strange and the same time gameplay, disgusting protagonist, very short storyline, poor and boring history introduction, psychosis is completely implausible.
    But very very easy platinum.

Last Guardian!
Оценка не 10 и 10, потому что 10 из 10 - это Last of Us и Witcher 3, а эта игра просто хорошая... не раздавать же всем десятки, как это делает один "худощавый непродажный блоггер", у которого чуть ли не каждая Call of Duty 12 из 10:)

Both proof that small development teams can make great games, and that video games can handle heavy themes in their own way.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is a prime example for anyone making the case that video games are a powerful art form. Creatively ambitious, it’s exceptionally well-thought-out and implemented – making it striking at both a sensorial and psychological level as it delves deep into an exploration of life with psychosis. It has its gameplay flaws but remains must-experience for adult audiences. An instant classic for this generation.

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice takes us on a long road to hell paved with contemplative yet stressful scenes, and an impressive respect for Norse myths and legends.
