I had almost forgotten about this game. Then I remembered I got it free from Humble Bundle back in October. I just hadn't gotten around to playing it. It seems I really didn't miss much. I'm sure this type of game is for some people, but it just isn't for me.

I did all the tutorials. I found them excruciatingly boring. But I figured, well, it's not really fair to quit now when I haven't

But I figured, well, it's not really fair to quit now when I haven't even played one online co-op game. I'm sure that where all the fun is. So I got on the queue to join a coop game. This is the day of the daily deal on Steam, surely there's lots of people online. Well, I was on queue for about 3 minutes so it wasn't that bad. I can imagine a normal day, however, when it's not the daily deal.

Anyways, I get stuck as an engineer. Great, the one class that I was most bored with in the tutorial. You basically run around and bang on stuff or put a fire out. Maybe you get to shoot stuff if you're not taking too much damage. And sure enough, that was the whole game for me. We successfully completed our wave too. There were some rewards. But the biggest reward was being able to quit the game. The game mechanics were just too simple and not very fun. The graphics are outdated. The UI and gameplay are clunky. (However, this game would probably be fun in VR & everyone has a mic and headset there.)

Rate 3/10. Do you like busy work? Do you like group projects at work and look forward to coming home so you can do some more group work? Then this game is perfect for you. I don't. So I didn't enjoy this game at all.

Guns of Icarus Alliance works as a competitive multiplayer game still. It offers a unique steampunk setting with ship battles that are highly intensive and a lot of fun when you get a good lobby of people together. But with an annual player count of 80 to 200 players, newcomers should be prepared to prep themselves with tutorials and PVE content.

Guns of Icarus is a hell of a lot of fun when playing online because of the required teamwork. There's plenty of ships to choose from which provides some highly needed variation. Audio-visually the game is a letdown and the AI is very dumb. The game also suffers from plenty of bugs that really need fixing sometime soon if you want to keep enjoying it. Apart from these gripes however, the game is still pretty entertaining.

Guns of Icarus is the kind of game you might fall in love with if you go in with a team of pals, but if you go in alone you might spend a bit too much time waiting for other players and dealing with AI to be too besotted. It's a game that has so much potential, but will likely need a much wider playerbase to reach that point.
