It's an okay action game, but it doesn't really captivate me. The more I progress, the less my expectations grow.

The story is alright but it’s better in the old games. The combat could be better, everything about it feels good except that kratos is weak. He dies in 2 hits and the first enemies you find in the game die in at least 6. So why is he weaker than the weakest enemies in the game. Also the map is kind of dry and boring. The game is not bad. It's interesting, it's exciting, but it's about combat and visuals. And so, I liked the plot, but compared to Ragnarok, it's not very good. But I liked this game. I perceive this game as an experiment. And as a start, it's good.

God of War (2018) is a really good game but it’s hard to not be cynical, disappointed, frustrated and annoyed. This is what happens when you put presentation and story above gameplay and player experience. First of all I have to say that anyone that ever said anything like ‘God of War is grown up now’ or ‘God of War is now mature’ has a bad memory, didn’t play the older games

God of War (2018) is a really good game but it’s hard to not be cynical, disappointed, frustrated and annoyed. This is what happens when you put presentation and story above gameplay and player experience.

First of all I have to say that anyone that ever said anything like ‘God of War is grown up now’ or ‘God of War is now mature’ has a bad memory, didn’t play the older games or is just an idiot. Second, why is this a God of War game with Kratos? I get that using that name and character brings some history, depth and built in fan base but this could have been its own new IP with new characters. We all know how much the AAA gaming industry likes to take risks so of course they are rebooting something instead. Third, why the hell is this being considered as one of the greatest games of all time and getting such high praise? God of War is the perfect game to pair with popcorn and soda. It is a blockbuster game – big budget, fun, highly polished but kind of shallow and not really special, amazing or interesting. If God of War is peak gaming then are good super hero movies peak film?

Let’s get the obvious out the way this game has really high production values. It looks and sounds excellent and made my PS4 Pro roar like a jet. The voice acting, sound effects and music is great. Everything is highly polished but it’s not that interesting. I’m not a big fan of the games art direction, a lot of the environments feel very similar and level design is kind of bland. It mostly loses the original God of War trilogy’s personality, variety, epicness, scale, over the top action and gore.

The story is fine but left me a bit cold. It starts off okay, although too slowly, and it ends well. However the majority of the game is just meh. I didn’t connect with things at all and wasn’t interested in the characters. Don’t get me wrong there were some good moments, humour and I liked seeing their take on the Norse mythology, unfortunately though it’s mostly forgettable and this why the ending probably didn’t hit as it was intended to for me. Also Atreus is annoying.

The game play has some problems and choices I just don’t get and didn’t enjoy. The commitment to the camera and the close over the shoulder view just doesn’t work for the gameplay. Not being able to see what you need too isn’t fun and it gets even worse in close spaces or near walls. Why can’t Kratos jump? It removes verticality from level design and combat and means platforming is just put in the bin. Kratos climbs so slowly too. Puzzles are underwhelming. The difficulty curve is poor with spongy enemies at first and then things just get too easy. There is all this different stuff to find and so much for Kratos to equip. Why is this crap even here, what does it add other than monotony and padding? I do like the way combat feels. The axe is fun and it hits hard. Everything feels like it has great weight and momentum to it. It doesn’t reward you for playing well though and starts to feel like you’re just going through the motions before the games end.

I think the original God of War trilogy is better than this and enjoyed those older games a lot more. It’s sad to see God of War lose its personality and uniqueness and become another big, homogeneous, cinematic, story driven, single player experience like the others by Sony. For me God of War (2018) is kind of forgettable and doesn’t have any replay value. Of course it is a delight for your eyes and ears. Of course it is impressive. Of course it is enjoyable, worth playing and I recommend it. But it is definitely not top shelf gaming or deserving of a place next to the all time greats.

The game is good. But "God of War"?

Well, the first time I played, I ended up quitting. Why? Because I found it boring. The hype and self-pretentiousness kinda ruined the experience for me. This time was different. My friend let me his Playstation 4. I played every main GoW and loved it, especially the third one. After that, naturally, I was curious about how Kratos would end up there

My friend let me his Playstation 4. I played every main GoW and loved it, especially the third one. After that, naturally, I was curious about how Kratos would end up there and why. I also had sympathy for Kratos, which I didn't have before. I'm trying to say that GoW 2018 does not sustain itself alone. If you never heard about Kratos and has a good repertory of movies/book with similar Dad and Son Plot, It will not be enough to grab your attention.

Furthermore, I believe the game lost its soul. Yeah, they are trying to tell a new story - and I appreciate that. The problem is a major mischaracterization in-game. The point of view is a nice example of that. Sacrifice the gameplay in favor of the narrative was not a good idea when the script is not that good, like Last of Us, and the melee gameplay was going to get worse. And I say more, the RPG system here is weak as hell. What can I say more? well... mediocre dialog and a static story "progression" made me get angry sometimes.

But... I still recommend this game. The story is still interesting if you played the previous games. The gameplay is not dynamic, but fun sometimes. The dialog is not great but has its moments, especially when Kratos reflects on his past. The graphics were amazing, as was its optimization. 4K 40 fps looked amazing. There is much to talk about - good and bad things, but I'm sleepy. Happily, most of its problems were corrected in Ragnarok, so it's worth your time.

God of War is a game that has received high praise, but upon a closer look, it falls short of its potential.

The story is promising, but the short length doesn't allow for proper development of the relationships between Kratos, Atreus, and other characters. The ending feels rushed, leaving you wanting more.

For me, one issue with the game is the amount of climbing you have to do, and the tight corridors that are present to allow the map to load. While it doesn't ruin the gameplay, it can disrupt the flow and immersion of the game. Furthermore, the world design of locations besides Midgard and Alfheimr could have been more creative. While the places you discover in the first few hours are unique and interesting, as the story progresses, they become less and less so. The semi-open world design doesn't enhance the overall experience for me either, as it makes the game more bloated with an unclear focus on what to do. While the side quests are interesting enough, the other activities aren't.

The combat in God of War is one of its strong points, with a fluid and responsive system that provides a variety of attacks and abilities to choose from. However, fighting multiple enemies can be frustrating due to the camera position and inability to cancel abilities. Additionally, the boss fights become repetitive over time, which is disappointing considering the potential for more creative and challenging encounters. Despite these flaws, the combat system still provides an enjoyable experience overall.

The difficulty in God of War is unbalanced, with a significant difference between the enemies encountered in the main storyline versus those found throughout the world. While the enemies in the story missions are relatively easy to deal with, the enemies found while exploring are often much higher level and require a significant effort to defeat. This can make it difficult to fully explore a place without feeling like the game is gatekeeping the player. While challenging encounters can enhance the overall experience, the unbalanced difficulty in God of War can be frustrating and detract from the exploration aspect of the game.

In conclusion, while God of War had its moments of brilliance, it didn't quite live up to my expectations. The story could have benefited from more time to develop the relationships between characters, and the ending felt abrupt. However, the game's graphics are undeniably beautiful to look at, and the atmosphere of Midgard is truly immersive, transporting the player into the world of Norse mythology. The combat system is fluid and responsive, though at times frustrating, and the difficulty can feel unbalanced, making exploration less enjoyable. While God of War has its merits, I was left feeling somewhat disappointed and expecting more from such a highly praised game.

(Ganz krass z.b.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Good story, decent combat that becomes tedious quickly, dialogue sometimes dubious, but generally alright, voice acting decent, yet what could be an overall sublime game, is detracted by a slow, and limiting pacing system. If I want to spend 30 seconds to a minute running in 'fast travel' or wait 2 minutes, idling on my phone, whilst climbing an elevator, then ill go the shops and wait in a line. I'm patient, but one can only endure so much. Expand

You do a spinning attack and everything around Kratos is minced meat, while in God of War 4 a bug-like human can destroy me in 4 blows. I swing my axe and i might not even land a hit.

The gameplay here (similar to Naughty Dog's) is outdated. You explore extremely linear levels, fight enemy after enemy, and only stop to pick some random loot up in a corner somewhere. The level design, the puzzles, are below average at best. The combat is fun, but tedious when its 99% of the gameplay, and most bosses can be juked and abused.

The reason these games are considered great are the graphics and storytelling. Well I've never cared much about graphics, and I've read a lot of books and rarely come across a video game with much merit in its story. Here the dynamic between Kratos and his son is actually pretty great and the writers do have enough subtlety and intelligence to say something meaningful. The rest of the plot isnt particularly brilliant though. So I'd have to say this game, like most games of this kind, is insanely overrated.

They created one of the defining titles of the current generation and a technical marvel whose stunning beauty in motion words cannot describe. And there’s one more thing. Barlog’s touching reaction to his masterpiece’s scores shows that even in the world of huge budgets, micropayments, loot boxes and sales forecasts there still is a place for artists who pour their hearts into their work. We need someone to remind us of that once in a while. [06/2018, p.38]
