It's an okay action game, but it doesn't really captivate me. The more I progress, the less my expectations grow.

The story is alright but it’s better in the old games. The combat could be better, everything about it feels good except that kratos is weak. He dies in 2 hits and the first enemies you find in the game die in at least 6. So why is he weaker than the weakest enemies in the game. Also the map is kind of dry and boring. The game is not bad. It's interesting, it's exciting, but it's about combat and visuals. And so, I liked the plot, but compared to Ragnarok, it's not very good. But I liked this game. I perceive this game as an experiment. And as a start, it's good.

God of War (2018) is a really good game but it’s hard to not be cynical, disappointed, frustrated and annoyed. This is what happens when you put presentation and story above gameplay and player experience. First of all I have to say that anyone that ever said anything like ‘God of War is grown up now’ or ‘God of War is now mature’ has a bad memory, didn’t play the older games

God of War (2018) is a really good game but it’s hard to not be cynical, disappointed, frustrated and annoyed. This is what happens when you put presentation and story above gameplay and player experience.

First of all I have to say that anyone that ever said anything like ‘God of War is grown up now’ or ‘God of War is now mature’ has a bad memory, didn’t play the older games or is just an idiot. Second, why is this a God of War game with Kratos? I get that using that name and character brings some history, depth and built in fan base but this could have been its own new IP with new characters. We all know how much the AAA gaming industry likes to take risks so of course they are rebooting something instead. Third, why the hell is this being considered as one of the greatest games of all time and getting such high praise? God of War is the perfect game to pair with popcorn and soda. It is a blockbuster game – big budget, fun, highly polished but kind of shallow and not really special, amazing or interesting. If God of War is peak gaming then are good super hero movies peak film?

Let’s get the obvious out the way this game has really high production values. It looks and sounds excellent and made my PS4 Pro roar like a jet. The voice acting, sound effects and music is great. Everything is highly polished but it’s not that interesting. I’m not a big fan of the games art direction, a lot of the environments feel very similar and level design is kind of bland. It mostly loses the original God of War trilogy’s personality, variety, epicness, scale, over the top action and gore.

The story is fine but left me a bit cold. It starts off okay, although too slowly, and it ends well. However the majority of the game is just meh. I didn’t connect with things at all and wasn’t interested in the characters. Don’t get me wrong there were some good moments, humour and I liked seeing their take on the Norse mythology, unfortunately though it’s mostly forgettable and this why the ending probably didn’t hit as it was intended to for me. Also Atreus is annoying.

The game play has some problems and choices I just don’t get and didn’t enjoy. The commitment to the camera and the close over the shoulder view just doesn’t work for the gameplay. Not being able to see what you need too isn’t fun and it gets even worse in close spaces or near walls. Why can’t Kratos jump? It removes verticality from level design and combat and means platforming is just put in the bin. Kratos climbs so slowly too. Puzzles are underwhelming. The difficulty curve is poor with spongy enemies at first and then things just get too easy. There is all this different stuff to find and so much for Kratos to equip. Why is this crap even here, what does it add other than monotony and padding? I do like the way combat feels. The axe is fun and it hits hard. Everything feels like it has great weight and momentum to it. It doesn’t reward you for playing well though and starts to feel like you’re just going through the motions before the games end.

I think the original God of War trilogy is better than this and enjoyed those older games a lot more. It’s sad to see God of War lose its personality and uniqueness and become another big, homogeneous, cinematic, story driven, single player experience like the others by Sony. For me God of War (2018) is kind of forgettable and doesn’t have any replay value. Of course it is a delight for your eyes and ears. Of course it is impressive. Of course it is enjoyable, worth playing and I recommend it. But it is definitely not top shelf gaming or deserving of a place next to the all time greats.

The game is good. But "God of War"?

Well, the first time I played, I ended up quitting. Why? Because I found it boring. The hype and self-pretentiousness kinda ruined the experience for me. This time was different. My friend let me his Playstation 4. I played every main GoW and loved it, especially the third one. After that, naturally, I was curious about how Kratos would end up there

My friend let me his Playstation 4. I played every main GoW and loved it, especially the third one. After that, naturally, I was curious about how Kratos would end up there and why. I also had sympathy for Kratos, which I didn't have before. I'm trying to say that GoW 2018 does not sustain itself alone. If you never heard about Kratos and has a good repertory of movies/book with similar Dad and Son Plot, It will not be enough to grab your attention.

Furthermore, I believe the game lost its soul. Yeah, they are trying to tell a new story - and I appreciate that. The problem is a major mischaracterization in-game. The point of view is a nice example of that. Sacrifice the gameplay in favor of the narrative was not a good idea when the script is not that good, like Last of Us, and the melee gameplay was going to get worse. And I say more, the RPG system here is weak as hell. What can I say more? well... mediocre dialog and a static story "progression" made me get angry sometimes.

But... I still recommend this game. The story is still interesting if you played the previous games. The gameplay is not dynamic, but fun sometimes. The dialog is not great but has its moments, especially when Kratos reflects on his past. The graphics were amazing, as was its optimization. 4K 40 fps looked amazing. There is much to talk about - good and bad things, but I'm sleepy. Happily, most of its problems were corrected in Ragnarok, so it's worth your time.

God of War is a game that has received high praise, but upon a closer look, it falls short of its potential.

The story is promising, but the short length doesn't allow for proper development of the relationships between Kratos, Atreus, and other characters. The ending feels rushed, leaving you wanting more.

For me, one issue with the game is the amount of climbing you have to do, and the tight corridors that are present to allow the map to load. While it doesn't ruin the gameplay, it can disrupt the flow and immersion of the game. Furthermore, the world design of locations besides Midgard and Alfheimr could have been more creative. While the places you discover in the first few hours are unique and interesting, as the story progresses, they become less and less so. The semi-open world design doesn't enhance the overall experience for me either, as it makes the game more bloated with an unclear focus on what to do. While the side quests are interesting enough, the other activities aren't.

The combat in God of War is one of its strong points, with a fluid and responsive system that provides a variety of attacks and abilities to choose from. However, fighting multiple enemies can be frustrating due to the camera position and inability to cancel abilities. Additionally, the boss fights become repetitive over time, which is disappointing considering the potential for more creative and challenging encounters. Despite these flaws, the combat system still provides an enjoyable experience overall.

The difficulty in God of War is unbalanced, with a significant difference between the enemies encountered in the main storyline versus those found throughout the world. While the enemies in the story missions are relatively easy to deal with, the enemies found while exploring are often much higher level and require a significant effort to defeat. This can make it difficult to fully explore a place without feeling like the game is gatekeeping the player. While challenging encounters can enhance the overall experience, the unbalanced difficulty in God of War can be frustrating and detract from the exploration aspect of the game.

In conclusion, while God of War had its moments of brilliance, it didn't quite live up to my expectations. The story could have benefited from more time to develop the relationships between characters, and the ending felt abrupt. However, the game's graphics are undeniably beautiful to look at, and the atmosphere of Midgard is truly immersive, transporting the player into the world of Norse mythology. The combat system is fluid and responsive, though at times frustrating, and the difficulty can feel unbalanced, making exploration less enjoyable. While God of War has its merits, I was left feeling somewhat disappointed and expecting more from such a highly praised game.

Good story, decent combat that becomes tedious quickly, dialogue sometimes dubious, but generally alright, voice acting decent, yet what could be an overall sublime game, is detracted by a slow, and limiting pacing system. The level design, the puzzles, are below average at best. The combat is fun, but tedious when its 99% of the gameplay, and most bosses can be juked and abused.

The reason these games are considered great are the graphics and storytelling. Well I've never cared much about graphics, and I've read a lot of books and rarely come across a video game with much merit in its story. Here the dynamic between Kratos and his son is actually pretty great and the writers do have enough subtlety and intelligence to say something meaningful. The rest of the plot isnt particularly brilliant though. So I'd have to say this game, like most games of this kind, is insanely overrated.

In this regard, we suffer a deficit, if there is a relationship, it is very flat between a guy and a girl, but here between parents and children, brothers. Changing the habitual path for the better, etc. Also humor and an interesting plot with puzzles. Well, the inherent cinematography and theatricality of the series with a mythological atmosphere.

You can buy and play this game on easy, defeat bosses on hard by digging through abilities, even without taking damage, or on easy without digging. And you get a pretty good average game. But, unfortunately, most of what is there is meaningless in combat and it is there only to make it difficult to find what is really effective in this rhythm of combat and for various animations on easy. And changing the difficulty level every time is very inconvenient. Most of the options that the game provides you are not balanced, it's called "painter's quirkiness" and we shouldn't suffer from it, therefore of course, I don’t recommend it. But if without any special expectations, you are satisfied with going through the average game, enjoying the average level and you want a quality story and all that another side that I described above then you can buy.
Those who will pass the bosses on difficult, do not skid or proud to pass everyone on difficult, you will lose all meaning and enjoyment of the game because the game, the combat is not balanced.
And there are bosses that repeat every time, big ugly ones from some unsuccessful cartoon, you also go through them on easy and do not lose the pleasure of the game.

The fight is more interesting and comfortable with a movable character, as well as one that moves quickly as in life and so that it is also easy to aim in the game as in life. And not each new boss must be learned and replayed 20 times in order to pass without getting damage, for realism or just to pass. Taking damage is not realistic, it's impossible. Besides, no challenge and not looks good with taking damage. Took more damage, less, what's the difference?
After all, in the life the hero would not have been killed or injured, otherwise there would be no story. He can get hurt once or twice according to the plot, but not a thousand times as happening in the game and then swallow green things. He could dodge until he figured out how to win, he should be faster. No replays, especially when you have to run again.
I like the rhythm of the combat in this game, but Kratos is slow to the point of being absurd, not believable. Even a disabled pensioner moves faster and this is not even a joke or an exaggeration, have you played the game, Developers?
In many places on hard it is impossible not to take damage, this option should be on any level. Kraktos, khm, Kratos is absolutely not adapted to fight with several enemies, although according to the plot he should be. About the tediousness and absurdity of small monsters every step was mentioned above.

    Best regards ;-)

By the way, respected developers who took the myth of a funny silly policeman and convincingly appropriated it for themselves - bang your head against your valkyries yourself and dig around the internet for information on getting completely pointless Ivaldi equipment. Next time I will think twice before buying your game. With all the stupidity in Assassin's creed Valhalla (waste of time, bugs, garbage, hackwork, inconvenience in control), your game are far from this level even further. There are not a lot games with such quality and criticism, it is relative to this game, but it is impossible to compare it with others. So much nonsense but no place, so goodbye ;-)

Also the combat is great but after a while it can become spongy because of level gating and rpg elements restricting quick finishes and doesn't make you feel like God of War.

The story in this game is ok at best. I'd argue older games had more engaging story and that the dialogue made sense. Older games showed you what happened instead of telling you all the from 1 expression(sad/moody) Kratos in this 2018 reboot. The pacing in this game is so bad/slow that as soon as I felt the game was about to end there was roadblock in the story and I was only half way through. Not to mention so many pointless loot chests, Lore and item collection which are not exactly shown where on the map they are. Even side quest and puzzles become repetitive where in older games they felt part of the narrative.

    - RPG elements
This game did not needed the rpg elements at all. There are so many of item chests you have to open to find materials to upgrade/buy or craft at the shop. Every-time you get something new your old things are useless. I hate character level ups which invites grinding except for borderlands where levelling up slowly while you progress you get new items/guns throughout the story. In Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart your weapons are upgraded as you play them and you don't just throw out your old weapons.

    - Level designs and enemy variety
The amount of enemy variety and lack of level design is mind blowing for a AAA game.

    - Restricted movement and platforming
The only movement he has is walking and running in tight environments. Dodging and rolling is ok. Everything from jumping(Also no double jumping), to climbing and walking along the walls is automated. There is no unique traversal.
    - Empty world
I mean literally this game has less than 10 proper npc’s not counting enemies
    - Restricted camera
The camera is so close it just looks and feels out of place everything feels naturally uneven in the game world.
    - Game could have been half its playtime while including the story and side quest content.

I would not play this game again in my life and spend 40hours on it. But I have played the old God of War games so many times and have already played God of War 3 remastered 4 times already and am still impressed every-time I boot it up.

They should have focused more on interesting level design with improved traversal and better/unique enemy types that doesn’t take forever to take down.

I decided to give this game a try at the end of 2021 - having never played the previous titles or even any game sort of like it. I'm a big fan of open world and adventure games and tend to avoid these sort of guided adventures - but the reviews are absolutely stellar and several gamer buddies suggested this as a good one to try - and it was $9 bucks.

this is one of the most beautiful games I have ever played - hands down. The settings and the characters are all amazing , the voice acting and the story are incredible and the overall look and feel of every part of this game is truly awesome. Even though this play-style isn't really my thing I found myself enthralled by the story and had to keep playing in order to see where it all went - I genuinely cared for the protagonists and developed soft spots for the rest of the characters as well.

it helps that I am a huge fan of mythology and am already familiar with many of the gods and powers and themes that make up this game. A truly unique idea executed extremely well.

however - this typeof gameplay is not my thing. Having a main character who can't jump and walks like he is wading through knee deep vaseline is frustrating to me. I find the camera to be extra annoying and just wish it would zoom out a bit .. particularly during combat - but I made do and quickly realized that there isn't a lot of 'play' in this game - it's more like a heavily guided heavily scripted story that you guide your characters through. Every time I played this I would be slightly annoyed by just getting around and the camera during combat was just silly. I understand that this bad camera is apparently part of the charm of this game for many - but not for me. The lacklustre controls and repetitive nature of the combat caused me to drop this from a solid 9 down to a 7.

I really appreciated the level design in this game - even though you can't freely explore much at all there are still a ton of hidden areas and regions that you can have to come back to later in the game - after acquiring abilities and equipment that allow you to access new areas. This is maybe my favourite part of the game to be honest.

the boss fights - wow. again not the most entertaining as far as actual game play and skill go - but holy crap are they ever amazing to watch. I'll be honest the over-the-top death animations and R3 kills didn't do much for me - but that's just me and some kids really like that sort of thing.

final word - I almost think I would rather watch this as a series than play it as a video game. most of the time I felt like I was chained to the rails anyways and was just waiting for the right time to press X or press O - but the incredible level design and unique story overpowered any negative feelings I had about the controls and combat and I am pretty sure that I will remember God of War for a long time to come.

The gameplay does just enough to be interesting, but for me the biggest flaw is that it was just too easy. Even the Valkyries weren't that difficult and I believe that the Valkyrie Queen's level of difficulty would be perfect as a regular boss, but nowhere near difficult enough to be an optional boss (I know a lot of people had trouble with her and thought the Valkyries were extremely tough. I'm not trying to brag here, but i genuinely did not find them that difficult). This lack of difficulty is a problem, as I didn't really have to engage with the mechanics at all. Once I got the timing down for the dodge and parry, I was able to get through each encounter without putting in much thought into them.

The world/playable map the game takes place in, while pretty looking was kind of dull. Everywhere you go, there was nothing that interesting in how you could interact with the world which made me not want to explore, but I had to anyway because you need loot to upgrade kratos. While on paper using loot for progression is a good idea as it is easier to control such that you don't get overpowered, I found the upgrades to be far too incremental to be exciting. It's hard to get psyched over doing slightly more damage and having slightly more armour. Worst of all, it kind of cheapens the combat. It makes some fights near impossible to get through until you get better armour in which case you can take it on the intended way. I don't like the feeling of losing a fight largely because I don't have good gear and die in a single hit. I rather do away with the upgrade system all together and just rely on your skill to get through fights. This is before mentioning the absolute mistake that was Niflheim. In short, it was an optional region where you can get good loot. Great, except to get everything you need to do the same thing over and over again. They should have tuned it such that you only need to go through the circuit maybe 5-7 times. As it is in game, it took you way too many times doing the same thing over and over again to get everything.

Lastly the narrative, is okay. It is clearly trying to recreate a father child bonding type story that we got in the last of us. The issue with God of War is that we don't really see the character's grow in a substantial way. You would expect Kratos to go from an emotionally distant father, to someone who is more open. We kind of get that with him telling his son that he is a god, but he still dodges questions like where he got is blades of chaos. He doesn't feel that more open to Atreus then at the start. As it stands his character arc feels incomplete. Speaking of the boy, his arc is that he went from an unsure kid to a kid with a literal god complex back to a regular kid I guess? It kind of went by way to quickly and his turn to the dark side and then back into a tolerable character happened so fast it barely counts as growth. As for the main villain, he was extremely underwhelming. For some reason the writers decided to include a villain but not make him part of the main conflict. He's just something that happens in the story sometimes. When Kratos learns that there may be a way to defeat him, he shrugs it off and says that they will find a way, but does nothing to look for this weakness. In fact the villain has nothing to do with the quest of spreading Kratos's wife's ashes at all. If he were to disappear from the plot, nothing would have changed. Kratos would just get to his goal with less hassle. Kratos was literally just on his way to the end goal when the villain appears out of nowhere and starts a fight. So We're fighting the villian one last time I guess? no build up, nothing to tie him in with the rest of the plot. He's just there to be a boss fight.

I know I sound harsh on the game, but the narrative was the weakest part of it by far, the gameplay makes up for it somewhat, but it suffers from being too easy to really engage me.

This game is one of the most low-end middling things I have ever laid my hands on. I'd rather have a one time paper cut on my urethra than having to deal with this game and its gameplay until completion, but let's take it from the beginning:

I decided to play it since the recent "Best videogame ever" statement (or award?) was thrown out there about God Of War. Wow, talk about a daring call to play it, right? So i scrounged my backlog and decided to give it a chance. Despite how bitter I may be about the game, I think there are a lot of good, perfect things about it, like its story and character development. Sadly, this shares around 50% of the time and focus of the experience, hence this score: 5/10. This obviously means that the gameplay, whatever this hot mess is supposed to be, is absolutely and categorically garbage.

Who took this game to this strange hack & slash/RPG direction and/or combination that has you min maxing your character more than playing the game? Who thought it was good to give the players a million collectibles and customizations and upgradables instead of giving us character levels? Why the hell does the game pause you at ever second to give a tutorial about upgrading your weapons and armor but doesn't tell you that you have combat abilities?
This game for some reason starts with a sort of Uncharted-esque style of level to then give you a somewhat open world and a overhead compass, which I hate and thought was idiotic, given the simplicity of the levels and the genre of the game, and gives you side missions that lead you to places you're not supposed at your current "level" only to get bent over by common overleveled enemies. So, what is the point of giving me freedom of movement when I can't face and unlock the things I see in the world? Making me go back as if this was a final fantasy or a dragon quest even though it's less than them but also not as much as a hack & slash as others? Who tf thought this was a good idea for a satisfying gameplay?

The UI is also dreadful. A menu that closes the moment you want to go up a level in this submenu hell impossible to comfortably maneuver or that leaves you stucked in a tutorial about the millionth upgrade and blocks your inputs until you press X, X, R1 and square to equip your +3 attack cock-ring that won't save you from the skull purple enemies that one-hit kill you. What an absoiute mess.

Ever since I was a teenager I was very into Norse mythology but I understand this is just an imagining inside the world of God Of War, so I don't have much to say regarding the art direction and the roles of the gods and Kratos in the game, I just want to say it's nothing special. I also thought that the depiction of Baldur was pretty offensive, not in the "I'm a snowflake and think this is culturally degrading", but as in "why tf is a messiah, Jesus Christ-like figure like Baldur portrayed like a drunk assholish lackey of Odin? He was his SON and not only that, his favourite one. Yes, his favourite son. Pick up a book, Studio Santa Monica".

Overall, I think game should get the award "Most overrated mediocre game because we're frothing at the potential second coming of another videogame messiah" Award.
Do you want to play a hack & slash? Pick up like Bayonetta or a Devil May Cry. Need an RPG? Think Persona, Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest. Need a Norse Mythology fix? Pick up a book about the Norse Eddas or one of the Joanne M. Harris books. Just don't play this hot mess, and if you need to play crap like this, at least don't praise it as the second coming of videogame Christ because it is only like being approach by a homeless junkey that's trying to get a couple dollars from you for another fix at Walmart. What a disappointment...

Ok time to make some enemies. God of War 4 -because screw you titling the nth game in the series the same as the first is ridiculous and confusing and I wish to Odin people would stop doing it- is a good game, but it's not nearly as good some people like to say it is. It sacrifices the addictive, fun and cinematic gameplay for far slower, more personal gameplay, which isn't necessarily aOk time to make some enemies. God of War 4 -because screw you titling the nth game in the series the same as the first is ridiculous and confusing and I wish to Odin people would stop doing it- is a good game, but it's not nearly as good some people like to say it is. It sacrifices the addictive, fun and cinematic gameplay for far slower, more personal gameplay, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it is here.

God of War 4 acts as a soft reboot of the series after God of War 3 seemingly capped off the series with Kratos killing his father Zeus, so what do you do when you've butchered the entire Greek Pantheon and left Greece in ruin? You move to Norway. Yes GoW4 moves to Norse mythology and barely takes advantage of that fact. The game gives you a whole host of worlds existing within Norse Myth but only lets you explore a handful, the game tells you about Thor and Odin and the closest you get to meeting either of them is a teaser for Ragnarok, you get to fight Baldur, a Greek god and his boss fight is great but it's the final fight and he's the only god you get to fight. This combined with the game failing to outdo the old games in many regards such as general combat, where the originals had you fight in big open spaces with a zoomed out camera and free control, GoW4 has you fight in open spaces with a clingy camera with minimal control, the fact that you can't pan the camera to watch behind you while you run for a health item results in countless hits and or deaths that should be totally avoidable, and I know SA knew this, because they had Atreus, Kratos' son, yell directions enemies are at, as well as having on screen prompts, but this doesn't really help for big AOE attacks on bosses or when Atreus is absent from the fight. Not helping matters is the lack of maneuverability, Kratos is more sluggish but also bafflingly, can't jump and therefore can't perform aerial attacks. Exploration has taken a NaughtyDog approach, in that you can't jump unless contextual, the game is riddled with sleep inducing climbing sections that have all the gameplay of a walking simulator.

Where the game shines is with its characters and dialogue, Kratos and Atreus are remarkably enjoyable characters which is surprising when Kratos is pretty unlikeable, what with him murdering, slaughtering and butchering his way through Greece before, and Atreus is a child, generally unlikeable creatures, but he's wonderful, he's funny, endearing and intriguing, and it's endlessly captivating watching the two interact. Kratos going to console his son but backing away too afraid to let his guard down, even to his own child, no doubt riddled with ptsd and regret from his last family, Atreus telling a bad joke and Kratos laughing, only to deny it, Kratos believing Atreus to be injured, hearing his voice break from his general brooding demeanour into genuine worry and concern for his son, made absolutely unforgettable by Christopher Judge, Kratos' new voice actor. Speaking of voice actors, I was surprised to find Atreus voice actor, Sunny Suljic was a rare case of a genuinely fantastic child actor, which makes him a great child actor, a great child character and a great escort character... the man simply defies logic and I thought his VO work was great, especially during emotional scenes like where Kratos leaves for a few minutes but when we arrive back at Boy, we seem to have been gone several hours at least and he yells at Kratos... before going back to acting like normal like nothing happened... sorry this was meant to be the positive part of the review but that part really irked me.

Overall, God of War The 4th, is like I said, a good game, a VERY good game, but it's not great, not even close. It thinks it's better than it is and has somehow convinced droves the same thing, acting as if the series only JUST got a good story when that has in fact, always been the case, whether or not you took notice because you were too busy distracted by it's complimentarily fantastic gameplay, is not the fault of the game. And unfortunately, Gears of God 4 doesn't quite match up to that level of superb dichotomy of gameplay and story, and relies solely on its story, which is great mind you, but hopefully Ragnarok can deliver both this time around rather than being a One-Trick. Nevertheless, I am very excited to see where the story goes next, and maybe actually fight more than one god and hopefully 0 Trolls with bloody rocks.

In my experience, the game is too long and the exploration only serves the RPG side of the game. Very little is worth seeing or hearing about the characters and world. The best thing is the combat and story. The first yet could use a little improvement, but it's worth your money!

I fully acknowledge this is a me thing, I just didn't enjoy these parts of the game. There is a portion where your traveling through a dark fairy hall with no light and you need to find your way across, and it's really frustrating to solve because anytime you think you've found the answer, like hurling your axe at a crank, you realize that's not it.

I will say that, if there's one thing that saves this game from being stale to me, the combat is the most satisfying of any game I've played. It's super fun to hurl an axe at enemies with light and heavy combo's, and I can only imagine how fun it'd be with the blades of chaos.

So far, it's still a fun game, and I do think a lot of good things are here!

When the action and game play finally began to pick up I was shocked that I had reached the end of the story, how anti climactic.  I immediately closed the game and uninstalled.  This reintroduction to the franchise has earned it's place on  list just above Chains of Olympus (2nd from the bottom) based upon the graphic fidelity alone.  I recommend this to anyone who is new to the franchise because you will have no expectations going in. Combat needed work. Many enemies are working against the systems the game has in place, such as revenants and dark elves. Kratos is also quite frail. Having enemy levels is a lazy design choice.

Exploration is okay. I do not like the hidden object game you have to play every so often to open treasure chests.

Story is good, but who cares when the core game play isn't fun.

So it's a game about guy who looks like Kratos and a boy who looks like Starkiller from Force Unleashed, in a mostly bland grey environment. It has HDR support.

Never been a fan of the series but I appreciated original games a lot because they were simply good. Now it's just Dance Dance Revolution Kratos. You watch arrows around your character turn red to dodge and mash brainlessly. Hit boxes aren't improved from the original series, but they took away Kratos mobility which makes actual combat worse. You've got the turtle run to make the game feel bigger, but it's useless in combat, and you've got sprint, but you cant really sprint sideways effectively, so it's useless in combat. Dodge is short too so all you've got is block. But there are now flashy unblockable attacks, all of which are conveniently line attacks not to expose how poor dodging is.

Enemy tracking is ridiculous, you can see them glide towards your character from far away which allows them to reduce distance really fast. This is especially fun when they're out of camera.
They added that kid so one enemy can focus on him, to make the gameplay feel less cheap.

Story is very minimalistic, just a bunch of excuses to make Kratos backtrack a lot. Kratos goes to the mountain, but it has to be a bigger mountain so Kratos goes to the other mountain. Fantastic. Oh yeah, and it's not open world as numerous reviews stated. There's one lake they couldn't stuff with knee high obstacles, everything else is basically a corridor. Platforming elements reduced to boring, hidden loadings.

You share the journey with a kid and a reanimated head who can't shut the f**k up saying same three lines for each situation. What's even worse the f**king head joins you somewhere mid game and has the audacity to inform you about every little character status change. Dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, find health, dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, oh no yu ded.
Another dumbed down game for people who can't notice that long green bar becomes short when you don't defend. F**king stupid.

Camera is now closer to the character, which makes battle orientation harder than previous games, and actually harder than any melee combat game. But they added enemy arrow indicators so it's your fault when you get hit from off-camera angles. Great design. Basically the only difficulty comes from bad camera and micromanaging it because with some attacks you actually have to see the enemy to notice if he telegraphs unblockable or undodgable one.

Enemies put you in a massive stun state, but you rarely can do the same to them.

There's no freeform combat anymore. Game has a semi lock on which will make you attack not the generic grey zombie warriors you want to attack. And bosses have those terrible mandatory invulnerable states.

Another smart design are shields. Yours has small angle within which it will defend you, some shield enemies can block with their backs towards Kratos.

There's very little enemy variety and bosses are basically boring damage sponges.

I believed the hype. F**k those fools. I feel like I'm playing the same bad wannabe action game for the past 15 years. It did not evolve anything, just a massive step back for the series.

    Gud graphiks, Kratos stronk. 11/10.

To hear tell, one might be inclined to think this is a miracle game, but it is not. It’s boring and repetitive. You’ll want to rage quit after you hear the 1000th “boy” being called out, and the repetition in enemy types is infuriating. The story is ok, but lots of plot holes ruins it. My advise: skip this one unless it is free.

I played the GoW trilogy on PS3 and it was fun. This was more for me a puzzle game then an action game. The puzzles were boring and the action was not good enough. The story was good but not that much. If the puzzles and riddles were more intelligent and connected to the story it would be more fun and entertaining.

Cory Barlog and his team achieved what many thought impossible – despite having changed almost everything Santa Monica managed to preserve that elusive spark that makes God of War game feel like a God of War game. They created one of the defining titles of the current generation and a technical marvel whose stunning beauty in motion words cannot describe. And there’s one more thing. Barlog’s touching reaction to his masterpiece’s scores shows that even in the world of huge budgets, micropayments, loot boxes and sales forecasts there still is a place for artists who pour their hearts into their work. We need someone to remind us of that once in a while. [06/2018, p.38]
