    God of War 4 is just a pile of garbage. The entire game is filled with reskinned enemies, with only a few bosses that have some memorable aspects, making it extremely boring. The puzzles all revolve around visual acuity; if you don't understand how to create good puzzle elements, then don't bother making them.     I can't believe this! I've been a fan of the God of War series since the first game came out, and I was so excited for this new one. But it's a complete disappointment! The story is boring and predictable. The characters are bland and uninteresting. The gameplay is repetitive and uninspired. And the graphics are mediocre at best.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have played the previous God of War titles on the ps3 and I was disappointed. On the ps3 God of War 1-3 were available, and despite some issues with the controls they were competing games. God of War 2018 looks nice, but that is were the issues start. There is no backstory it just, God of War and boy, and that is it. And there are no combos at least to start. Then the first boss fight is against a giant were you are supposed to use boy to shoot his arrows to stun the enemy and guess what, the arrows basically do nothing and the giant can take you down in 2-3 hits. Ok beat the giant the you get the next boss fight The Stranger, who you never know who he is or what he wants you just end up in a protracted fight. When you fight the stranger he will charge at you which forces you to use your shield and you miss and chance to counter. On a rare occasion you can finally attack the stranger and start to do damage guess what happens, suddenly right in the middle of you attack combo the stranger will counter your attacks stopping you combo. But you can't counterattack the stranger when he attacks you. Only played the first trophy but was unimpressed, not sure if I will play more.… Expand

    Boring. Played once and thats it, the story feels unfinished, just put gow ps4: part one. Sometimes feels lime a chore to play it. The good thing is I realise that in ragnarok I'll just watch someone play it on youtube and save my money as its just storytelling playing some buttons. Why bother playing?

    I initially thought wow, it ticks all the blocks for a great game, then I played on and found it is actually very cookie cutter. If you took prince of Persia and transitioned it into a game for the LGBTQ community and it had an baby with mark ruffalo l, you would have something that resembles this.

Classical music is just that, classic, not modern at all. Where's the metal? I want to hear Metallica or Pantera when I'm slaying reskinned ogre #34, not a harp being played by a depressed 50 year old man. Main antagonist is the only part of the game that is even close to being decent, but even then he's kinda boring and only shows up for like 2% of the entire game.… Expand

It’s unfair and misleading for people who wants a challenge and gameplay mechanics that doesn’t feel as an excuse to stick together different cutscenes. Terrible, repetitive combat and boss battles with little to no enemy variety. Puzzles take two seconds to complete and are only difficult and challenging if you're 7 years old. Open world is absolutely awful where you have to spam quicktime events all the time to get anything done properly. The story is an actual mess, with no motives other than to go scatter some ashes of a woman we have NEVER MET so don't even care about, whilst random, terribly written enemies come to attack you because this game needs some sort of plotline. Just as the game is about to get kind of interesting, when you find out that Atreus is Loki, it ENDS. By far the worst God of War game and one of the most overrated games I have played in a long time. To give this game of the year back in 2018 was an actual crime.… Expand

    Clearly too many paid reviews here, the score does not reflect the game at all. Was a huge fan of GOW games up to now, the originals were still much better! It's a mediocre game at best but lacks the controls and battle system that made GOW great in the first place.

    Things I didn't really like in this god of war:
    1. Worst camera choice
    I can't stress this hard enough. This is UNFORGIVABLE 2. Boring and repetitive combat Most of the enemies are very generic and the difficulty curve is completely artificial where higher-leveled enemies don't get stunned so you can't combo them, while 1 to 2 shotting you. Meaning you have to use a dark-souls-esque    Things I didn't really like in this god of war:

    2. Boring and repetitive combat
    Most of the enemies are very generic and the difficulty curve is completely artificial where higher-leveled enemies don't get stunned so you can't combo them, while 1 to 2 shotting you. Meaning you have to use a dark-souls-esque combat strategy which completely defeats the purpose of this game
    Most of your light and heavy runic attack animations don't have I frames (this is a HUGE overlook by the devs honestly), making a cooldown build an outright recipe for disaster.
    The rage system was a disappointment at best as it achieves nothing at higher difficulties other than build up some health while dying.

    3. Cinema > gameplay and quality of life features
    Looking at the game, it's obvious that this is an attempt to broaden the target audience of GOW, by sacrificing the core community once again. GOW as I remember was always combat-driven, with a plot built with the clash of morality and strong emotions. This feels like I'm playing another game with a Kratos DLC skin add-on.

    4. Meh skill/combo tree
    The combo tree is just horrible honestly. Most of the time, it was me going back and reading on how to use the next skill and thinking of how to use them in combat. But as you get in NG+, higher-level enemies start showing up, which don't get stunned by anything, making half of the tree completely useless. Rather the game becomes a grind to get the next best armor set.

    Some pretty cool stuff they've done:
    1. 8/10 story
    The story is well thought out with great music choices and scenic locations. The additional lore markers are a real treat for feeding in all the foreshadowing of the adventure to come. Mimir has become one of my favorite characters in this series with tales of side characters past and quirky remarks in general. The world-building is also pretty solid. The only issue I would have is with the side quests being in general boring and a lack of lore regarding mid game bosses which was seen in earlier GOW games.

    2. Amazing port
    Seeing how 90% of the console to PC ports can't handle a consistent 60fps unless you got a fire-breathing GPU, with the gods of Helheim cooling them; I would say the devs have done a decent job.

    TL;DR
    Really bad game mechanics and combat in general, but an equally good story experience. Treat this game like a playable novel and enjoy it as such.    … Expand

    One of the most overrated games ever. The boy is beyond useless and annoying, Glad I got this for free, have zero interest whatsoever in playing this or another GOW game.

    I'm a huge fan of the 3 previous GoW games, as well as the 2 PSP ones. Seeing the trailer, and all the glowing reviews I went in with rather high expectations. The trailer gave me a glimpse that this might be different, but I was hoping they'd put some thought into it, even if it was shooting for a different vibe.

    What I ended up playing was extremely disappointing. Clunky, bogged down combat and... being assisted by an NPC? I wish they'd buried Kratos at his prime and just let the series die. This oaf I was in control of was a disgrace to the God of War franchise. The entire "Epic!" element you get when you're playing GoW was nowhere to be found.

    The saving grace, if you can call it that, are the gorgeous visuals. which is to be expected with games coming out on next-gen consoles. I forced myself to play it for a couple more hours, hoping that it would get better but why torture myself into playing a video game, right? I would honestly have refunded this mess if I could.    … Expand

    I really don’t get the hype?! I just got it on ps plus for free and the game is beyond annoying! I rather watch god of war “the movie” . Kratos can’t jump neither can he climb? Are you kidding me?! The combat system is very confusing and lame . Also your “son” is very annoying he won’t be quiet.The old god of war games are definitely better.

Though I enjoy this game it it's very good, It 100% deserves a 3 star from me not because of the storyline or it's mechanics, but because of difficulty in certain missions/areas/activities you come across, when you finish obtaining the chisel that allows you to open the doors that requires magic to open, and you exit the dead giant on the right hand side, you open a door that reveals to be a prison for a creature called the "Valkerie" not that theirs nothing wrong with the enemy it's self but the major issue is that if I'm playing on "Give Me a Story" difficulty the Valkerie shouldn't be difficult to eliminate at all.

    It's like it's cranks my difficulty from g.m.a.s to realistic instantly without telling me that going into the fight will be tough even on g.m.a.s difficulty. Devs should adjust the Valkerie and other enemies like her based on the difficulty your playing not offsetting it for the player who just wants a story    … Expand

    Игра ужасно прямолинейна и ужасно скучна. Боевка крутится вокруг нескольких основных приёмов, максимальный уровень сложности переделывает игру в соус лайк игру, а это отвратительно.

    P.S. заметил, что кто сначала играл в horizon, а потом в god of war хейтят god of war,
    а кто сначала играл в god of war, а потом в horizon хейтят horizon.    … Expand

    One word: BORING. I suggest that it be played for an hour before going to bed, so it will help you relax and sleep well. Repetitive combats and poor graphics. Inexplicable hype. Certainly the disappointment of the year.

    The main story is very fun and nicely made. I've very rarely seen such a well told story in a game. Wolfenstein TNO maybe.

    The boy is a constant burden and never shuts up. Really, I turned off the sounds just to make him shut up for a few minutes. The silence was great. My recommendation: Do not play the endgame after beating the last story boss. The endgame is a horrible grind and    The main story is very fun and nicely made. There are very poor rewards, ridicoulus bosses and I do think this was made to make fun of people that keep playing after the end of the story. I've watched the documentary on this game (find it on youtube, its great) and there was this developer and she said every time she reads online that somebody was struggling with the valkyries, she feels happy. Thats a 100% sadistic. So really, dont play after you finished the story.

    Without my experiences after the story, this would've been a 8/10.    … Expand

    Totalmente sobrevalorado. Tenia expectativas regulares y aun asi fue toda una decepcion. Lo unico rescatable son los graficos. Pero el sistema de combate horrible, le quitaron la escencia de GoW (accion) a combate tactico que termina siendo una lata (tipo souls), a los que le gusta ese sistema bien, pero yo esperaba GoW, no esto. Los puzles muy faciles por lo demas. Por suerte lo jugueTotalmente sobrevalorado. Tenia expectativas regulares y aun asi fue toda una decepcion. Lo unico rescatable son los graficos.     The most overrated game in history. God of War is a boring and repetitive interactive movie/walking simulator. You don't even need to play the game, you could just watch all the cutscenes on YouTube and you will get the same experience. Don't waste you time and money on this scam.

    Pour ceux qui l'ont connu le Kratos dieu de l'Olympe de l'antiquité grecque qui passait de bons temps avec de jolies déesses est terminé. Place à un nouveau Kratos à la barbe blanche père de famille qui vit en rase campagne dans les contrées nordiques.     MASTERPIECE. Some of the best gameplay I have ever experienced. Fantastic story and character development. Insane visuals and a spectacular finish.
