Gene Rain is a good attempt at a third person shooter from Chinese developers, Deeli Network. The game looks great for an indie title, with some high-quality textures, detailed character models, dynamic lighting, and a great use of particle effects. However, what lets the game down is its clunky controls, poorly translated and executed narrative, and the sub-par voice acting. The game looks great for an indie title, with some high-quality textures, detailed character models, dynamic lighting, and a great use of particle effects. However, what lets the game down is its clunky controls, poorly translated and executed narrative, and the sub-par voice acting. I overcame the control issues by manually remapping my pad on the PS4, the script could be forgiven as it’s not their native language, and the voice acting was ambitious due to the fact all the actors are clearly Chinese. However, the story wasn’t explained clearly and it’s easy to forget what’s going on as you enter the next cover-based combat area.

If you ignore the story and play the game as an indie cover-based shooter with little depth and a decent amount of combat sections with the ability to play as three characters and upgrade your weapons, then it’s not that bad. I was surprised at how much fun I had and I still drop in and out of the horde mode between playing other games.

There is also a PSVR mode coming in the near future, along with an Xbox One and PC version.

I've done a full in-depth review on my site, here: http://www.gamepitt.co.uk/gene-rain-ps4-review/

Basically, the game isn't as bad as some people are making it out to be. If you look beyond the few issues it has, it's a decent cover-based shooter which you'll spend about 8-10 hours moving from arena to arena as you take out a variety of enemies with a decent selection of weapons. - I gave it a 6.8/10 (but MetaCritic only does whole numbers)

By itself, Gene Rain’s gameplay is only bad. Factor in plot, dialogue, and instructions that barely make sense at the best of times, and you’ve got a recipe for a genuinely terrible game — albeit one that will undoubtedly delight bad game connoisseurs.

It's difficult to recommend Gene Rain to anyone. The story makes no sense, and the game does a good job of maintaining that sense of confusion. The gameplay has no redeeming qualities whatsoever, and the presentation would be laughable even during the prior console generation. Not even Trophy hunters would be attracted to this title because the grind to obtain them is unbearable. Stay as far away as possible from Gene Rain.
