To me, the criticism that Firewatch is merely a short story in an admittedly short game's clothing willfully ignores the degree to which control conveys ownership. No other medium is as effective in directly involving the audience in the consciousness of its characters, and no other game of this like has done so as effectively and deliberately as Firewatch.

Every set piece: the opening scenes; decisions on where and when to use gameplay; how the studio dealt with passages of time and instances of urgency... Everything employed in Firewatch appears to have the singular goal of investing you in the relationship that defines the title. In this sense it's genuinely remarkable that the studio managed to condense such a feeling of familiarity, and growing intimacy, in an experience that barely tops out at five hours.

I know and appreciate the criticism that Firewatch will receive. In fact I've never previously cared all too much for the growing library of "walking simulators" available across the platforms. But for me, Firewatch distinguishes itself in its effortlessness. Where the likes of Gone Home and Dear Esther seemed like the product of studios desperately straining after some special status (and, for me, came across as contrived and wooden as a result), Firewatch just is.

Give it a go (especially when the price drops) and try to cast aside the preconceptions that come part-and-parcel with the genre. You won't regret it.

One the most intriguing game over the last few years. Very immersing, detailed and interesting story with one of the best dialogues and characters (with that budget) that i remember. This is a Must-buy if you like thoughtful and subtle games. Just everything is perfect in this masterpiece and when you finish it it's you've read a very good book.

The gameplay is a sort of mix between a Telltale game and a "walking simulator" and the results are incredible!

There is some performance problems though which is pretty sad but Panic inc. has said that they're working on it.

Basically if you like mystery, exploration and dialogue choices this is the game for you!

This is the unique, beautiful, engaging and emotionally involving experience you only get about once a year (last year it was Life is Strange). I didn't want to stop until the end and I rarely felt so much connection between the main characters in a game. Would replay and even rebuy it anytime despite its rather short playtime of 3-4 hours.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's actually the first time ever I write a review, I loved this game so much, so I decided to say THANK YOU to all the people involved in creation of this masterpiece in this way. First thing I want to mention is that I didn't know anything about this game till yesterday. I saw a positive feedback in the Internet, watched the trailer and decided to give it a try. I really didn't expect that it's gonna be THAT good. This game goes straight to the "games I'll remember" category and deserves a fair 10 in my opinion. It's quite rare, though, when I give 10 to a video game, but that's the case. The atmosphere, dialogs, characters, the whole story is simply amazing. It's realistic and touching. Anyone could be in the skin of Henry. You're not a superhero, you're an ordinary man with ordinary problems and feelings. I really have a lot to say, but I think I'll stop now.
SPOILER ALERT! The moment when I asked Delilah to move to with me and she was like "Oh, first I need to go somewhere else, but yeah, maybe I'll come later" was so real. It really got me.

I don't know how you can finish it in just 2,5 hours and appreciate it. It took me two evenings (8-9 hours in all and I still had the feeling I rushed through it a bit in the middle section when it gives you a moment to relax before the "storm"). I would not trade it for more catchy, cheesy ending, more "gameplay" or "replay value". My hat off to Campo Santo for having a courage to expose themseves to unjust criticism that may scare off some players. I encourage everyone to walk outside their comfort zone and give it a try. The reaction to this game is a case study in what is wrong with modern discourse about gaming. Gamers and reviewers want instant gratification, crowd pleasing finales, catchy mysteries and the most convenient definitions. No ambiguity or questions unanswered. Of course there's nothing wrong with wanting that. It's perfectly fine to have a formed taste. What is wrong is expecting this game to be exactly what it's trying to avoid and not taking it for what it is. It IS a great game exactly because it asks more questions than it answers, because ending is not gratifying but simply **** SAD, as the tragic event it unveils is goddamn supposed to be. And because it's ambiguous. Its a drama exploring the themes of the loneliness and simple facts of life. It's not a suspense thriller although the moments when it evokes the paranoia of two main characters and induces it on a player are some of the best. As someone wise mentioned already: a whole lot of players have completely missed a giant element to the end because they didn't understand the whole "isolation fueled paranoia" side to the game. It had a very sobering conclusion. And Henry is a completely relatable character. He’s a man who just wants to get away from it all to think, to feel free again (even if it's not possible to get away from ourselves) something every single person can understand sometimes. He’s a perfect everyman hero to follow on this breathtaking journey and yet, by the end of the game, we’re still scratching our head about where this is all going. None of these questions need to be answered by this game for it to be dramatic. But they should give the audience something to talk about, in addition to being totally fulfilled by the story at hand. That makes for an absolutely perfect ending to a basically perfect game.

And don't even get me started on the length "issue". Not in an age when people are willing to pay 65 bucks for punishing 474 minutes of film like Hobbit Trilogy that goes absolutely nowhere with it's story. I'd rather have the 20 bucks game that leaves me wanting more in a good sense. It's not just about the content of gaming within a game but about the way we talk about games and experience them.

Games are a relatively young, fledgling form of art and entertainment. Their creators are still learning, exploring uncharted areas and facing many difficulties of implementing story telling with ever changing technology. They make many mistakes and they will continue to make them for a long time. But still too many gamers can't or don't want to see those correlations and instead of trying to explain and understand them they misjudge games unjustly, freely and easily handing authoritarian judgments. Instead of defending valuable initiatives with the awareness of the weaknesses and their causes they condemn them to oblivion. And so gamers, scared by severe, often unsubstantiated negative opinions, do not want to invest in the product. We all take responsibility for the present state of affairs in gaming if this keeps happening. Meanwhile my hats of to Campo Santo. They took a big **** risks and I truly think and hope it paid off in the end. What a great game.

The lighting and art style has a similar affect. The mystery of the setting can b e quite a plus too. The atmoshere and voice acting is great. I love how you think the story is going one direction but takes another without contradicting itself and the radio interaction between the main characters. Looking at some of the reviews it seems like quite a few people didn't pay attention to the story. It's all there and if you get confused just YouTube it.

Being a fan of non-fiction, I can appreciate good writing. Firewatch exceeded my expectations of script within the first few hours of gameplay. It's refreshingly witty, sensitive, emotional and well, real. Much like the banter I have with friends, I felt the game allowed and even encouraged it.

As far as performance goes, I've read a lot about frame-rate issues on the PS4 version, but I've really not noticed these myself. It feels a good pace and to be honest, my boy-scout skills of map-reading weren't up to scratch and I found I spent a lot of time early on working that out whilst going to the wrong places!

You really need to accept with Firewatch that it's a 5 / 6 hour journey to completion. That it's not going to demand frantic gameplay, and it wants to consume you into the character and natural world around you. All of these things it does fantastically, beyond that actually.

This game will leave its mark on you. The weight of the characters past and the bitterness that consumes is melancholic-bliss.

IGN reviewer said this was one of the most refreshing and memorable games of the last decade. I would agree fully. For me, I got it really as a break from Fallout4 whilst awaiting the DLC, and it has been simply a joy to play.

Highly recommend this for people looking for escapism in gaming. Its a delight!

In the end, it's just an anecdote compared to what really matters : the relationship between Henry and Delilah. Also, the intro to the game (with the text) could've just been erased completely. It didn't give useful informations to understand the story.... which could've been just started right when the character accepted the firewatch job. Even after that moment, during conversations, the main character's past is mentioned. So why do the player get told all the details before the true story begins? There tons of games out there but few touches the heart. This is a beautifully designed game and the free-roaming in the woods is just awesome. The story is simple yet creates a unique theme. Won't say much, Go Play it.

This game was great and I really enjoyed the story and the environment of the open world that the game had but the only reason that I’m not giving it a ten is because I’m a trophy hunter and when I got all the trophies, I then realised that there was no platinum and I was so frustrated that I spent my whole day getting all the trophies.

Firewatch is such a good story. It's relaxing but keeps you invested in what is going on. I would call this a story-based experience rather than a video game and I mean that in the best way possible.

The game is wonderful, with a great story, solid sense of place, and two of the best characters i've seen in a game, it most certainly isn't for everyone. For those who don't enjoy "Walking Simulators" (Gone Home, The Stanley Parable, Everybodys Gone to The Rapture) Firewatch won't do much to change your mind, but for those of us who do, it's a treat.

I would give the game a 9-9.5, but

The brief experience puts us under the skin of Henry, a mid-life man who is struggling with his past and finds in jon at a National Park a place to be alone and, maybe, find himself. Once he reaches his firewatch tower, what was supposed to be a dull job becomes an intriguing quest for answers.

This game got me hooked from the first second until the very end. And I LOVED every bit of it. Remember, people, it's not about the length, it's about an immersive experience. And Firewatch delivers this, beautifully.

Great game that needs to be played. Developer Campo Santo, please, please give me more!!

You choose the questions/answers of the dialog, and this affects your understanding of the plot, so choose well. This game is a roller coaster of mystery and suspense. Sadly many people have been underwhelmed by the ending, but this is mostly due to human nature of imagination running amok and expectations getting out of control I found the ending completely satisfying and beautifully bleak. No superpowers, guns, or puzzles.. Just an interesting escape that serves its purpose very well- to remind us, through humor and paranoia, of the fragility and sadness that our lives must often return to. This is told through two excellent voice actors, smooth walking-sim mechanics/controls, and a beautiful watercolor animated art style that's accompanied by an excellent score. This kind of an experience represents another seed of what video games can become in terms of a medium for sharing the human experience.

-1 for technical issues that will hopefully be patched soon.
-1 for dialogue choices/branching NOT resulting in any substantial differences to the story. Because of this, it didn't quite reach the potential that it could have. For example (even though I'm in the minority of thinking that the ending was compelling & fitting), I do think that there should have been multiple endings based on your choices.

Ultimately, it's a great indie game, best played through cold in a single sitting. It's a relaxing, intriguing, and saddening interactive tale. It doesn't try to blow your mind with deep thoughts that are out of this world. Instead, its profundity comes from being grounded in the reality of its own cohesive simplicity.

I think the last time i genuinely cared for a character in a game was the mass effect series. In this your other firewatch companion did it for me. Delila. The faceless compaion that acts as a sounding board, moral compass and friend for your 5 or so hour journeh through this game. I genuinely felt a bond with her and find myself missing her voice down the walkie talkie

I will not ruin the story for those who have not yet finished it, but for me as i watched the credits rolling i couldnt help but ask "that's it"? So much so that i played it throughfor a second time, making different choices along the way.

Graphically it is quite striking though performance wise it leaves a lot to be desired with frequent judders and framerate issues, mostly i noticed when the game autosaves. I also experienced 1 crash.

Buy this game if you want to have an emotional journey and to provoke thought and reflection within. Oh, and a laugh along the way.

The relationship you develop feels real. The dangers that happen feel real. The development team did a wonderful job of putting you into this world. Now, a lot of talk is about the ending and I won't really talk about it at all but I will say this... Much like the game make you feel... It too feels real.

At the end you are left with a lasting impression that truthfully is thanks to amazing voice acting. It's a shame there is nothing else to explore in the game once you done but I really don't think it was intended on that. You really just have to sit back and enjoy the ride.

I've bought it expecting something sort of Zen Simulator with a bit of adult plot and unfortunately, it's not that what I expected. Nevertheless, this game made me amused and kept me focused from the very beginning to the soon end. Yes, this game is pretty short. Instead of slow gameplay based on exploration which I was hoping to see, developers gave us an adult and serious story (yeah!) and set it in high tension atmosphere. To my mind, it's not that bad idea but the game lacks a few more moments without stressful feeling that something isn't okay. Though this misunderstanding, the whole story is accompanied by great scenery, beautiful graphics and the dialogs which made whole the game. Really they're strongly immersive and I'd been having that feeling I'm not alone, there is someone real, those conversations were fantastic till I ended this title. And here comes the ending. Before playing this game, I'd read some review which says the ending sucks, needless to mention that this kind of reviewing is bad, and I have to say that's not true! Seriously, I bet a lot of people agree with me, but the only thing I may say before you try it yourself is, do not trust those who say the ending is bad. Just check it yourself. To sum up, this is a fresh breeze in the field of adventure games, and it's worth to recommend to the people who can spend money on titles which are going to be beaten only once. Yeah, I don't think I'll play this again. Expand

Not only is this game crafted beautifully, it is a great example of an interactive drama that genuinely makes you feel for the cast and make you think. I found it refreshing to play a game that constantly made me ask myself questions about what I would do in the characters shoes, if I agreed with the main characters decisions and it made me rethink what grief and loneliness can do to the mind. Some people are quick to dismiss games like this as "walking simulators" and therefore not worthy of the title of game and should be set aside in some sort of limbo-like side category. Personally, I value games like this greatly, even though to me they hold next to no replay value the genre as a whole has a worthy place in the gaming world if the graphics and dialogue are executed as perfectly as they are here. The voice actors made me even more engrossed in the game, finishing it in one session and feeling quite satisfied from the experience. The difficult part for me to review is the ending. I can't say I either loved or hated the ending outright. I completely understand the ending the developers chose and at the time I did feel a little ripped off, a little betrayed by the fact I basically sat through a 3 hour long therapy session with this man whose face I didn't even get to see till the credits, and it ended with me wanting more answers then I got. Then I took a step back and thought it over properly, and I decided the ending did suit the game. The game doesn't give any indication it's going to be a happy story, it's more of an experience to see this man deal with his life in tatters. For him to get the girl at the end wouldn't be true to the story at all and I am glad it ended how it did. All in a all a great start to 2016 with a great story driven game that leaves me wanting more Expand

Firewatch is an amazing game living up to just about ever standard I had set before buying the game, the graphics and art work are pretty well done, story keeps you on the edge of your seat, and finally the amazing dialog between the two characters really brings you into the game and gives you a realist connection.
While the game was very well done it felt short, after finishing the game within a 3-4 hours time span I felt unfulfilled.
While I did not suspect the story to turn to such a light side I liked it but in the end I hoped for more, more than just a saddening talk between Henry and Delilah, I felt depressed and quite hungry for more in a sense that I had already been disappointed by the discovery of the accident with the boy and his father, but to be let down once more by the reality of Henry never seeing Delilah left my empty inside.
My conclusion is a great game, very well made and again the voice acting phenomenal. Cons would be short and ending seemed rushed.

Everything was good about this game except the ending of the game. You just leave its like nothing you did in the game mattered because you was going to leave anyhow. There was no closure of the story, it was much like that Campo Santo wanted you to imagine how the story would resolve. Would you go tell the police about the boy's body and the murder/arsonist who was the boys dad?, or was Dehlia the boy's mother and that is why she never cared for his dad because they were divorced? We might never now, but is this just the start of Firewatch or is there a sequel in the making? The only other problem with this game is that I lost all of my indicators on my screen. The ones that tell you to press a button to jump down or clime up. This could of been prevented by having players test the game. All in all for Campo Santoe's first game it was pretty good. I only have one question what will Campo Santoe bring us next? Expand

The story kept me hooked, I was invested in the characters, I was invested in the world and the story, and this mystery I was trying to uncover, but it all felt like hours of rising action leading to something amazing like a crazy plot twist, but it just sort of fizzled out. the presumed "plot twist" didnt shock me or change the story entirely, it just felt off putting and didnt really make sense, I was expecting more. and the ending just kind of left me hanging, I was like "thats really it?" I wanted more. I wanted closure.

There is no replay value to the game, in the same way there's no re-watch value to a movie. It only lasts 3-5 hours, but this isn't a necessarily a bad thing. Sound:

The game comes fully loaded with simple music for each occasion, whether it be something scary, or romantic, they nail it on the head. As for the in game audio, it is beautiful. I love walking through the mountains when no music is playing. You hear the running water of streams, or birds chirping in the background. It is just brilliant.

    Graphics:

The graphics use a unique art style. They didn't aim for an extremely realistic graphic scheme, but then again, it is beautiful. It is a cross between real life and shell shaded graphics. The landscape of the forest and mountain side will literally take your breathe.

    Gameplay:

The gameplay for Firewatch works for what it is trying to accomplish. You feel in control of the character, so in turn you feel for the character. The control scheme is so simple, any level of gamer could play it. I plan on introducing it to my wife actually! But as for gameplay, it is so simple, that it is the only thing where they could've heavily improved. This game could set the stage for an amazing game in the future. I will stick by these developers as they continue to impress!

    Replay Value: Moderately Low

    Story:

This is where Firewatch excels. This could be one of the best, most engaging, stories I have ever witnessed. Notice I said "one of the best", because there are many out there that could top it. But honestly, the story in this game is so great, it would be a shame for anybody to miss out on it when it is only $20. GO GET IT!!

    - Excellent voice acting; what good is writing if it isn't well delivered? This absolutely is.
    - Visually striking. The depth of the trees and mountains in the distant, the vibrant colors of the meadows. It's nice just to sit back and look at it
    - Perfect atmospheric sound. Very little music is used in the title, leaving you alone mostly with your thoughts and the sounds of the world around you, and that world is brimming with sound. From wind swirling around your tower to the rustle of leaves on the ground, the sound really brings the world home, helping to build the sense of isolation and nothingness this game strives to achieve.
    - Well-built tension. The tense moments pack a serious punch in this game, with certain occurrences turning my arms to gooseflesh.
    - What music is there adds to the atmosphere, though it's exclusion was a good decision

    Cons:
    - The game stutters consistently. Sometimes every few seconds
    - Incredibly long load times. When I hit the first loading screen, I actually became worried that the game had crashed
    - Pop-in can be a real problem sometimes
    - The plot ends anticlimactically
    - The world and paths often feel gamey and inorganic
    - Animations are awkward. In a game where movement and pace are slow, Henry's ninja-like hand movements are out of place and unnecessarily quick.

Overall, Firewatch is a tense and nervewracking experience that is held up by technical flaws. Any fan of story driven walking simulators will find a well crafted tale and plenty of beautiful visuals here, just expect to pulled out of the immersion occasionally when the games stutters for the third time in ten seconds.

So if you feel like you need a breathe of fresh air and live life at a slightly slower pace, then perhaps Firewatch is the break you've been trying to catch?

Firewatch almost feels like a one-man-show piece of theatre (accompanied by an off stage voice over), and you're allowed to progress through the events at your own pace. A pace that at times I pounded the forest floor, while at times I stopped to take in the vistas and the beautifully crafted environment. It's short, maybe five hours, but that's OK, the story feels probably weighted and not either eeked out or rushed, and in Firewatch, it's narrative and story that is King.

The biggest problem with Firewatch are the controls, they are far from perfect. Sometimes rather frustrating. Although by the end of the experience I was more than competent and knew how to beat the gremlins that haunt the navigation.

To summarise, if you like the idea of some gentle orienteering mixed with some very dramatic story ( with possibly some of the best voice acting in any game to date) then I would definitely recommend experiencing Firewatch at least once.

The game is really good. It has great atmosphere, good artstyle and touching, down to earth story. but in my opinion plot was really short, and too many walking just to make game longer. and also too many freezes on ps4. So 8 out of 10.

With a story that works as an allegory for the very act of losing yourself in a video game in order to escape your troubles, this is essential for anyone looking for an intense and original experience, as long as they’re ready to have the mirror held up at the end.

A nice story, that captures the feeling of loneliness brilliantly, but it's not really a game. And considering that, the story is well crafted and laid out, so it's worth a punt. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a fan of these walking simulator style games I'd say Firewatch is an inconsistent experience.

The good. This game is essentially about two characters interacting and growing. Both the writings and voice acting for these two is by far the highlight of the game. They're both people with obvious demons and regrets who struggle to be open with each other without being vulnerable. It would've been nice to know a bit more about both, where they do cut it off is still pretty solid.

The environment is another strong suit, the colours are varied and attractive.

The map design is solid, with lnot too much overlapping of areas minus a few central areas.

The narrative up to a point is very interesting, with a bunch of interesting story points ie some campers go missing and seem to have been attacked, as well as a mysterious abandoned and burned up that your guide seems oddly silent about. You uncover a overarching mystery that almost leans towards a possible conspiracy or twist, not necessarily "the world is ending scale", while mysterious it feels like something personal is at work, it feels almost psychological.

Now the downsides. There's only 2 but in my mind they're big.

    1. The game runs poorly. Pop ins and pretty frequent lag are big issues in this game. Hopefully they follow through on what they've been saying and fix it. But considering I'm one-and-done on this game it's honestly too late.

    2. The great start to the story falls apart in the last act. All the little pieces that I pieced together ie the missing campers, mysterious cabin, etc are either never mentioned or dismissed in a single "oh yea. They just went to town". The overarching story of you and your friend being spied on goes from "wow. This is interesting" to "wait. This can't be it" extremely quick. There's a minor sub-plot of a couple characters that are referenced a couple times that are suddenly shoehorned into being major factors, but due to their minimum build up, at what felt as the big reveal was underwhelming to the point that I felt like I had missed something major.

There's 2 main things that bug me. 1. Early in the game you overhear your friend on the walkie speaking to someone else about "he doesn't know anything yet" stuff. This sets up a certain narrative that a lot of players will use the rest of the game to build up. Now, if the point was to use that as a set up for a twist then it was handled poorly because I ended up just giving up on the whole idea when it clearly went nowhere. Even the actual in game story just kinda loses momentum before just kinda saying "she'll here's the answer I guess". I won't fully spoil but the "who's spying on us" plot is literally answered with "some guy who just felt like it".

My other issue is in games like this there's an overarching message. Sometimes it's something obvious and sonetimes its left up to interpretation. This time I genuinely couldn't see it. The core story has the players character going to the woods to (I'm assuming) either take a break from dealing with a sick wife/wanting to be away from the suffering. This is the part of the story I wish had been expanded upon more. It's referenced a lot early on but gets dropped entirely in the back half until the game literally goes "oh yea. Remember your wife?" Before vanishing again till the last scene. It's a part of the story that could've been used more, there's even a scene early on that implies that it will. Then nothing. It's disappointing. Essentially i "don't get it", you don't make any deep self revelations. No confessions. Nothing. You go to this place to take a break, essentially do. Then go home. I'm fine with the idea of there being no message, or rather, have the message be "sometimes there isn't a message. Things just happen" but in my opinion this isn't conveyed at all b

They had something strong going early on. But it feels like they had no idea how to tie everything together

TLDR: Pretty game, great interaction between interesting yet somewhat underutilizes characters that are strongly voiced. Interesting story falls apart in final act. Most early plot points are ignored/abandoned and the ones that are followed through on feel rushed. A strong 90% of the game is let down by the last 10%. Technical issues that aren't game breaking but too common to ignore.

It's a wonderful concept, but the execution is mediocre. For a game that takes place outdoors the movement is very poorly implemented. You can't even jump over a rock without a canned animation. Also I fell through and got stuck in the world geometry more than once.

Other than that, it's quite short (like 3 hours?) and the mystery part of story is weak, but at the end of the day it's not about the actual story but rather about the interaction between the two people who got caught in it which I though was very well done and enjoyable.

9/10 for the concept, 5/10 for the technical bits, 7/10 for the story.

After I hit "Buy" on the Playstation Store, I became very excited to jump into the Wyoming wilderness and explore not only it, but also the relationship between Henry and Delilah. Henry is the main character who decides to become a fire watch for a few months after learning his wife has developed dementia at a fairly early age. Delilah is the seasoned veteran fire watch, who's tower is on the other side of the map, unreachable by the player. Henry has his cliches and he is a bit on the depressive side, but his circumstances may justify this for some. Personally, I would have liked to seen a little more life and flair. He is a great "Average Joe" with typical problems. The game revolves around exploring, performing various tasks and focuses a lot on narrative. The game is told through communication with Delilah via radio. While playing, you will find things such as notes, letters, books, keepsakes and more that relate to the story and help tell it. That is essentially the gameplay in a nutshell. It is a simplistic approach that works surprisingly well. From a graphics standpoint, the unique visual aesthetic and color palettes really pop and pull the player in, even if there are muddy textures abound. It is disappointing to see the frame rate suffer as you walk through the woods. It just happens to much and apparently it was never fixed.

This is Campo Santo's first ever title. They did an incredible job given that fact, but it may not have been so great if it was their second or third. When I say that, I mean that the game does a lot right, but that simplicity can also hurt it. The wilderness really isn't that large and you will find yourself backtracking quite a bit as you progress through the story. But to be fair, the story is the glue that holds the package together. The way the game begins instantly makes you feel invested in what is going on and does a fantastic job of putting you in Henry's shoes from the outset. The emotional aspect of Firewatch is mainly what helps it stand out. The hook here are the mysteries that unfold along the way. They are the meat and potatoes of this plot-driven journey. The anticlimactic ending may anger some players, but I won't spoil it. One thing I noticed and liked on the first day of playing was the fact that I couldn't set waypoints and the game actually males the player think about which direction to take. I found that freedom liberating and fresh. I feel like we are so used to setting waypoints and fast-traveling. I completed the game in about 5 hours and that included some exploration time. It is a short game, but the $20 price tag justifies that. I think this is something many gamers can pick up, play and enjoy for a brief amount of time. (7/10)

Instead of a UI, you get map and compass that are intuitive and fun to use. They make exploration feel fresh and it's exciting to see when your character makes additions onto the map.

All that said, this type of game's quality is really judged by the the characters and the narrative. Most of the game is spent in dialogue between two main characters and I'm glad to say that they make a delightful pair. They feel rich and fleshed out and it's a treat to hear them chat. The game's best mechanic is the way you discover and learn about the world through these dialogues.

The only downside for me is how the narrative was handled. The game is amazingly well paced and brings up new and interesting threads throughout the short experience, but by the end only a few of these threads have any payoff. You find that none of your choices had any effect on the story and none of your actions had any consequence, other than the impact on the main protagonist.

In Gone Home, there is no illusion of choice, so it feels like a very personal story that impacts the protagonist on a deep level. In Firewatch, there are choices that you later find were meaningless and the way that the protagonist handles the adventure is determined by you at the end, so it feels like a shallow trip that could have meant anything that you wanted. Both rides were fun, but the ending of Gone Home was infinitely more satisfying. I would still recommend Firewatch for the experience, but with this warning.

Vague spoilers ahead - Here are the threads I was invested in and whether they paid off in my estimation:
Relationship between main characters - Yes, but not cheapened by lack of choice
Notes in the supply boxes - Nope, read all of them
High Tech Gear and Fences- Not even remotely
    Father and Son - Yes
The fire - Eh, kind of
    Teens - Nope, unsatisfying
Power lines- Nope (How? Why? Did it even make a difference?)

    Wow this is long, sorry.

The positives: the voice acting of the characters of Henry and Delilah is superb, truly believable and genuinely snarky, joking dialogue that develops between two similar people (although if you're bothered by a lot of swearing you won't like it much). As the game progressed I really became attached to both of them as realistically portrayed people without needing to know what they looked like, even if I never approved of their decisions and reactions. I grew to like them despite the glaring flaws of their personalities.

The same goes for the hints about another ranger to ranger relationship with the notes left in the supply caches by Dave and Ron. Exactly who were they and what happened in their lives that the notes only give a glimpse of? I thought that was as well done as the dialogue for Henry and Delilah.

The art direction I liked as it captured both the wildness in atmosphere and the beauty of untamed areas, although as fabulous as the sunlight could be artistically it also played havoc with navigating around areas easily.

The negatives: the limited character options for Henry right from the start gave a clue that you were going to be on the rails for the narrative, that whatever 'choices' might appear to be open were unlikely to really be so. It's a pity that even with limited options you could effect things in such a tiny way that sometimes it didn't seem even worth it.

The story has some holes, ones that aren't just unanswered questions left open to interpretation but quite obviously conveniently dropped or ignored. It's a good story overall but given the investment in dialogue and atmosphere, how it is set up deliberately to get the player engaged by the midway point, the ending is bound to be deflating if not actively depressing.

And finally, the technical issues. The lagging and stuttering frame rate when a save spot is walked into or getting caught on random bits of scenery. As others have said, it really breaks any immersive feeling whatsoever. I also found that the walkie-talkie dialogue could be very twitchy at times, cutting off in places or being interrupted by other actions and losing key bits of info. If it hadn't been for these problems I would've scored it at 8 or 9 but those really killed a lot of scenes for me.

I must've looked at my map a million times throughout playing this. So don't be surprised if you're going in the wrong direction occasionally. Despite this, this does make it a bit more realistic - if you're staying in a national park over the summer and don't know your way around then constantly using a map would be a common thing right?

Firewalk is essentially another addition to the ‘walking simulator’ genre, with the game largely involving walking around the forest pressing buttons when prompted to perform context sensitive actions. With such minimalist gameplay games of this ilk live or die by the quality of their story telling, and in large part thanks to the excellent voice acting, I did find myself drawn into the mystery. I've just completed it in one session, it's not a long game and only took about 4-5 hours. The biggest issue I have is with the performance, the framerate is just all over the place and if this was a fast paced game it would be unplayable. It's just hitching constantly, all the way through the game and it drops to single digits all the time as well.

I really loved the first part of the story, I was looking forward to where it was going, just sadly it went nowhere. They build up this big suspense and it just end sup being this Brian thing that you couldn't care less about, it has no pay off and it just ends. The two characters in the game have a relationship that goes nowhere, the story with his wife goes nowhere, you're hoping for some amazing storyline and it just doesn't happen. It often makes no sense, I have myself questioning it a lot of the time.... just such a shame because I was really loving the first half.

Despite all that I still had fun, I loved the style, I loved the premise... it's just rather mediocre.

I am not disappointed that the wild conspiracy plot that was being built up by the characters in the middle ended up not being what they thought. I thought that was a good twist and was cool. I, like many others, was let down by the end. I know some people are saying that its supposed to be like that. That its supposed to be like real life and suck. But no one wants "real" real life in games. I was left with emotions floating in the ether. I don't want that.

Delilah acted in a way that I don't believe she really would have if it were real. You don't build up this relationship (complete with sexy time talk over the radio one night) then when it's time to go your just like "welp, gotta go. Maybe I might talk to you again. Later." On top of that not even being interested in seeing Henry at least once. If there were going to somehow be a part 2 or DLC Episode that sealed the deal, then that would be cool, but I dont think they will.

Overall it's a good game(story) and is well made. I never experienced an issue except for a plane in the sky at the end that was stuck in place. The graphics were minimal but pretty. The writing was good (till the abrupt, lacking end) and the voice actors did amazing. Cissy Jones as Delilah was wonderful. I looked her up after the game and she is as pretty as Id have imagined Delilah to be. Her eyes smile. :D She is a great voice actress and has been in more games than I thought. Henry's voice actor is amazing as well.

At any rate, a 6 out of 10 is not bad. With a better ending it could have reached 8-9 territory. I'm just a dude writing a review that most people will never see. My opinion doesn't count much but I figured id throw it out into the abyss. :)

Not a bad game, if you like walking sims and story-based games, but with a few major flaws that dampened my enjoyment: 1) The PS4 version is unpardonably ugly, with major performance issues even on a PS4 Pro with the latest patches installed, thus rendering the enjoyment of hiking in the wilderness, which the game attempts to convey, and needs to convey, poorly achieved. 2) The story lineNot a bad game, if you like walking sims and story-based games, but with a few major flaws that dampened my enjoyment: 1) The PS4 version is unpardonably ugly, with major performance issues even on a PS4 Pro with the latest patches installed, thus rendering the enjoyment of hiking in the wilderness, which the game attempts to convey, and needs to convey, poorly achieved. 2) The story line has its highs and lows, with opinions all over the board, and with some genuinely interesting dialogue and narrative quirks, but I found the twists and the ending to be a big letdown. 3) The best walking sims and linear narrative experiences are short for a reason. 2-3 hours should be the max for a game like that. Firewatch, however, stretches itself thin. Extra length may sound like a good thing, but in this case it means unnecessary padding, with long treks back and forth already-visited landscapes. This repetition is made much worse by how boring and ugly the game world is.

Overall, I cannot recommend the game at full price, nor can I recommend the PS4 version. That's too much to ask for a bad port of an average game. If you like walking sims and narrative experiences, this game is probably worth checking out in the long run, but only if it is on sale, and only on PC.

It was a really good story, but the options on the dialog doesn't change anything really. Playstation 4 version have A LOT of problems. I have never seen so bad FPS drops on a ps4 game before.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all, I have to say I found the hiking in this game pretty bothersome since I kept walking off the right path and going into dead ends. The game is a giant corridor and doesn't really pretend it's doing anything else but guiding you along the one winding path of its storyline. I also kept waiting for the "adult dialogue" (which some reviewers promised), but it didn't really get as adult as I would've imagined as Henry and Delilah only kept dancing around the truly difficult subjects. Otherwise, it's not a bad story to experience, although I think we all knew what was waiting in the cave. But predictable does not equal bad and I especially enjoyed the final touch of Delilah not waiting for Henry (as I desperately tried to navigate him toward her through the burning forest). Expand

Exciting mystery story......yes, the story had me hooked until the 70% mark...turned out to be one big nothing burger of a narrative....really....nothing but a waste of a few hours.

Though not being an utterly bad game....it is not.....I however really suggest you just give this a complete miss.

The one moment near the end of the game where the developers had a chance to bring some emotion or shock into the story....were a body is discovered...they drop the ball...no small cutscene or even change in music....you literally make a comment on the radio and step over the body and move on..

    Very weak.

I can't say a lot of good things about this game. It basically boils down to: go to a certain spot on the map and report via walkie talkie to your supervisor what you have found on said spot. Then get yourself to the next spot and report again. It's just quite an empty experience on all levels. The only thing that drives this game is the interaction between your character and Delilah. For the rest it's just an empty game with nothing to do but run around and report stuff.

Honestly? I really do not understand all the high rating reviews the game got.
It has a lot of bugs that really make it hard to enjoy the game. I fell out of the world and got stuck badly.
The graphics are mediocre at best and stutter like no game before on a console. The dialogs are good. Voice acting is outstanding. But that is about it. After all this is very shallow

Firewatch is a brief but enjoyable experience set in a stunning and lovingly crafted environment, but there is no real ending – there’s simply the place where you stopped reading the story.

Firewatch is a simple game that tells a simple, far from impactful, tale, which approaches greatness thanks to superb writing, acting and design work. Gameplay is kept light and straightforward, but is always engaging – befitting a game that revels in the unique storytelling potential of games. This is a new studio's debut title, but it bears the quality of a product made by a team of veterans who have a great deal more to offer.

Dares to ask us how we deal with mistakes. It’s a shame the answer it provides is flat and unfulfilling. [April 2016, p76]
