A fun little hack-and-slash. The nostalgia of playing on a GBA might not be there anymore, but there's a lot of adventure packed into a small package. Its biggest flaws are that it doesn't feel particularly inimitable nowadays, and the multiplayer is almost a must. If you're looking for a relaxing way to beat down some baddies with your friends, Crystal Chronicles gives you everything you might be looking for — without having to shell out for four portable systems.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles was already a wonderfully unique and challenging title when it originally released, but the Remastered Edition brings that all to the table with even more plus the ability to finally play with friends online. While the character models may still be clearly from many console generations ago, there’s so much wonder and charm put into it that it’s fantastic to play through and enjoy time and time again. It’s a wonder how even years later it still feels as inviting, and somewhat terrifying, to take on new dungeons and challenge whatever comes next. Anyone looking for a seemingly simple but utterly charming action adventure with tons of time to spend taking on dungeons need look no further than Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition.

Although a little marked by time, the graphics and sound improvements are successful. The magic of the title still operates as much even after sixteen years, not to mention the multiplatform side making the title more accessible. In short, whether or not you missed the original, this remaster, certainly not flawless, remains an adventure that we invite you to (re) live alone or with someone.

The improved graphics take an already beautiful game and smooths out all of the aging issues that became noticeable since its original release seventeen years ago. The various family trades and tribes in Crystal Chronicles Remastered brings an element of replayability to this Final Fantasy title for new and old fans. The epic Caravan campaign is more enjoyable than ever on current-gen consoles, and fans of the original Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles should definitely check out the freshly remastered version.

It’s too bad the journey can feel so aimless and disjointed at times with the mixed storytelling and the cumbersome mechanics that stick each component of gameplay together. It can be occasionally exhausting to navigate through the menus, swapping in different spells and items constantly as you beat on your foe for a good 30 minutes. I really wish Square Enix would give it the fair shake it deserves with modern conveniences, instead of dredging up dated gameplay mechanics that overshadow a wonderful, mystical little world. Still, getting to play a family-friendly tale with my daughter does make up for a lot of this, and if you can get some friends together, it could be the same for you.

Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition is an almost great update on the original. While the game itself is still fantastic and the new content is fun, the online only multiplayer leaves a lot to be desired in terms of quality and features.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition is the sort of game that you play to wind down with after a long day. It's not very demanding or challenging yet the adventures within remain memorable, charming, and ultimately rewarding.

Even though I spent so little time actually playing it, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles remains one of my favorite childhood games. There's something to be said for the experience, that it creates memories that powerful. But memory is all-too-often unreliable, often building things up to be better than they ever were. In this second trip with the crystal caravan, I did still delight to discover the cheerful tales and chipper tunes of days gone by. Less welcome were the dated systems for item management. Not welcome at all was the modern update to multiplayer. Turns out cross-platform is not always the answer. I'll take my beat-up old GBA as a traveling companion any day.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition is a fantastic game that is hindered by some multiplayer hindrances. With a few updates and some additional work, this game could overcome its flaws and relive its glory days. Unfortunately, there's no telling whether or not these changes will be made, or how serious Square Enix is about maintaining the title now that it has been released to the wild. Players should try and take the game at face value, as difficult as it may be to look past its differences from the original.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles was never the best Final Fantasy. We can't even say that it was the best spin-off of the series. However, it was and still is a very special and magical game. And it offers a more than remarkable cooperative experience. Back in the day, the limitation of having to use multiple GBAs for multiplayer was a handicap for many. The current problem is that the online of this remaster does not quite solve it, putting obstacles through an absurd progression system. Despite everything, it is still a very fun and addictive title. As a remaster, I could be more careful.

There’s some good stuff here and it is definitely a piece of gaming history that should be honored and remembered. It just doesn’t compare to more modern conveniences in cooperative RPGs, and things like needing to constantly create new lobbies or make sure you have a certain number of party members can hold you back.

I had a great time returning to Crystal Chronicles, but there were times where I wished they pushed the remastered offerings a bit further. The new dungeons, semi-UI improvements, and more refind graphics were great for old fans like myself, but that may not be enough to grab the attention of new players.

An upgrade from the original, but sometimes for the wrong reason. The lack of local play is an odd decision, considering the original thrived on it, and especially when so much thought and execution was put into the online multiplayer aspect of the title this time around. The fighting system probably won’t win over most fans of the series or of the original 2004 title, but the charm of the original game is still intact through this edition’s exploration and treasure discovery. In the end, this game still contains some fun aspects of its original gaming intentions, but only if you can see through its faults.

As it stands, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered is a tough game to suggest for everyone. Playing through the game alone works perfectly fine, you’ll still get a pretty good experience provided you are willing to put up with the repetitive nature of the action combat and revisiting dungeons over and over. And the online multiplayer component works well too, I had no real issues connecting with other players, no problems with lag or disconnects. But the core co-op experience feels decidedly empty and does a poor job of echoing back to the experience I had with the original game, so much so that I leave the game a tad disappointed overall.

Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Remastered is a good multiplayer game. You'll spend hours exploring dungeons and perfecting your characters. The main feature of the game is of course its multiplayer dimension, and you'll have fun whether you play with friends or with strangers. However, the experience is tarnished by incomprehensible choices such as the disappearance of local cooperation or the gameplay's lack of dynamism. In conclusion, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Remastered is a lazy port of an excellent game.

Without much reward for playing single player—and an obtuse and difficult to navigate multiplayer system—Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition simply creates too many barriers to entry for the player to overcome. While the simple gameplay could be fun with an easier interface, the complicated multiplayer will likely only be enjoyed by the most hardcore of fans. Not an outright bad game, but certainly a difficult game to play.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered can only be recommended to the most die-hard of Final Fantasy fans, and only if they play in its single player mode. Those looking to play multiplayer with friends are going to be sorely disappointed.

If the Final Fantasy franchise has appeared intimidating in its more modern form, then Crystal Chronicles Remastered might be a decent entryway. The game is clearly its own beast. Again, I’m all for trying something new and if a lot of the things I found particularly annoying about the gameplay loop of Crystal Chronicles were overhauled, it could actually be pretty fun. The return to a sword and sorcery fantasy setting since Final Fantasy IX is in itself refreshing but that’s pretty much the only kudos I can muster right now. A product of a different time, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered is a game that makes a hard case for itself to solo players.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered is a better take on the GameCube classic from 2003. The game does a few things better, like the multiplayer. Still, there are enough obstacles for the game to be really fun. The chalice restrains you from moving freely and the multiplayer still feels outdated. In terms of graphics there were steps taken but the game still looks like an old game, only in HD. For fans this is a must by because of the new things added, but newcomers better skip this caravan.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles is a gem of the good old days, and this remaster aims to bring its former glory to the modern era by implementing crossplay and online multiplayer. The beautiful score and a visual style that stands the test of time make it feel worthwhile, and both are enhanced by this HD remaster. At the same time, this remaster also brings all the issues the original had, and doesn’t improve upon any of its flaws. Omitting a local multiplayer is the biggest mistake, as this stood central in the original experience.

Crystal Chronicles wasn’t the best spin-off of the series, and this remaster (as well as the issues and missing features it brings with it) won’t change that. It can be fun with friends, but there are better RPGs out there.
  24. 60
It's not the worst remaster but Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles should have been a great remaster but Square just didn't do enough to make the game feel like it belongs in this day and age. Co-op is a chore to even get started and having no couch co-op to play with your family takes away the identity of Crystal Chronicles and what made it such a stand out - traveling and exploring as a family.

The game that we ended up with is one that will sate the appetite of fans of the original, while also likely irritating the many that are interested in the multiplayer component. The online multiplayer feels very much tacked on and could have used more time to make the experience more friendly. Hopefully they’re able to make adjustments post-launch. Ultimately, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition is a game that, mechanically, shows its age, and even its newest features don’t feel quite as modernized as they probably should. By that rationale though, maybe the game will end up being exactly what you remember it as.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition falls short in its single player department and even more so when it comes to multiplayer. It’ll be a nostalgic trip for some, but not one that I can promise is worth taking.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition retains plenty of its original charms, enhanced by updated visuals and audio, but with its defining local co-op diluted by clunky online play, it simply doesn’t stake a strong enough case for its return.
  28. 60
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition could have been a success had it simply nailed the multiplayer, but cumbersome limitations make it difficult to enjoy with friends. Overall the Remastered Edition is a prettier, yet lesser experience all these years later, so unless you're itching for that sweet hit of nostalgia and don't mind playing with strangers, it's perhaps best to sit this journey out.

There's still a memorable, charming adventure to be had in Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Remastered Edition, but the complete lack of local co-op cripples the game's original vision. Playing together online is always an option, but even that's poorly implemented, with convoluted invite systems and host-only story progression. As a mostly solo experience, Crystal Chronicles is a decent, if somewhat repetitive dungeon crawler -- but this remaster should have been so much more.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered is certainly prettier than the GameCube release, but with a definitive lack of local co-op and some bafflingly poor online multiplayer choices, that’s about all this remastered classic has going for it.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered presents players with an enjoyably short yet not overtly memorable single player experience with enough restrictions and issues to multiplayer matchmaking that only the most dedicated of fans will want to overcome. In an attempt to bring the game to a wider audience with a less cumbersome barrier of entry, Square Enix has over-complicated the experience once again.

An outdated gameplay, the elimination of local multiplayer and the too long loading times doesn´t validate the improved visual, sounds and the addition of its endgame content.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles is still a serviceable action RPG as a single-player game, and playing the dungeon content in a party with the known limitations in mind can be enjoyable in spurts, but the whole feels stripped almost bare of what originally made it unique. My renewed excitement for a remastered version of Crystal Chronicles was centered around revisiting a classic with modern multiplayer infrastructure in mind, instead, I found a product that clearly feels unfit for its new interpretation and unfaithful to the original.

Too much of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition is tied to an experience that is no longer available. The moment in time that made the GameCube original possible has long passed, and trying to capture that nostalgia with so many missing pieces, is a fool's errand.

It pains to criticise this remaster so harshly, because there was a great fondness for the original title that sprang to life if local multiplayer with friends was taken advantage of. Square Enix has shown little desire to give Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles the makeover it deserved, however, and its many dated issues only become more apparent next to the removal of local multiplayer and region-locked online play. There is still a case for chancing it with friends that enjoy dungeon crawlers and can deal with the limitations, but beware of the strange control schemes and tedious gameplay.

Sometimes it’s best to let things rest, and that is definitely the case with Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered. It was a game that is mostly remembered for its ties to one of Nintendo’s many hardware gimmicks, and without that, we are left with a rather mundane game that hasn’t done enough to correctly update itself. As a game to be purchased and played in 2020, it’s just not worth returning to — it needed a remake (or, better yet, a sequel), not a remaster.

Now I'm wondering what anybody saw in the original in the first place. The controls and the combat are bad. The story elements are dull. The load times are excruciatingly long and frequent. And visually, it doesn't look very polished, which makes me wonder how this is a remaster. The menus, especially, are an eyesore to look at with giant glaring fonts and ugly textures. The horrible online experience isn't just the icing on the cake, it's like someone took a cake and threw it in a blender without putting the lid on. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered is a lot of things, but a classic is not one of them.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Remastered Edition feels like a squandered opportunity. The game has seen a number of delays over the last year, but it doesn't feel like Square Enix utilized that time to improve the game over its predecessor. The voice work is rough, the controls are frustrating, load times are laughable, and the lack of couch co-op is glaring. The game's music and overall presentation are great and multiplayer is still fun after all these years, but it's hard to recommend the game when it feels like such a step back.

This review contains spoilers, click full review link to view. Critical Review of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition. Square Enix re-made this title with the same
Concept for Game Cube, have it be the most expensive game to play. The initial cost is $29.99, then additional $50.00 in DLC puts this at $90, per person. On top of that there is no central management system. Bought this game on PS4, and want to play on iOS? Fork over more cash. Speaking of iOS, while you are figuring out how to try multiplayer, watch your iPad or IPhone continue to play the opening movie, again and again. So that was frustrating, so now I am just going to play the game I bought on PS4 Pro. I am one of those geeks that changed out the hard drive for a 1 TB SSD. And helped with larger games like FF7R, or FF XV. No help here, get ready to continue to looking a now loading screen up to 60 seconds in some areas. Wait until you play the Moschet Manor level. Now loading every time you pass through a door. The timing of the game is off, in the first level River Belle Path, you will be laying a key down and by the time the sequence completes enemies will possibly knock you down 2-3 Health bars. The AI for Mog not dependable. In areas like Rebena Te Ra in single player mode, Mog is not going to help you open multi step doors that require magic. After painting him over and over again, I finally gave up and completed the level with out the chest. And as everyone else has complained there is no couch co-op play, so cross that off the list. Finally the end of the game. This is where you know this was just upscaled by AI. With out spoiling the end game, just be ready for seizure inducing cut scenes. I think the ideas was to be cute and magical while on a bad mushroom trip. Post game there are dungeons that still affected by miasma (even though you cleared the world of it). The challenge levels are brutal on single player mode. This is when I decided I was done with the game. Finally the trophies/achievements for the game are lame, only 9 and no Platinum trophy for PSN. 5 of the trophies are possible to obtain on the first play through (3 of them are missable). With the other 4 coming on post game play through. This game was announced to come out in early 2019 along side other Final Fantasy titles going cross platform. I am not sure what SquareEnix did in the extra year+ with the title, with it being a “Remastered Edition” but it was not released in a cohesive, playable state for the price tag it begs.

Crystal Chronicles had its flaws when it launched on Nintendo's gamecube, but the co-op was unforgettably fun. Setting out together, making progress together, and returning to towns to see families and growth has been stripped away. You won't even get a letter after helping a friend in their world and if you plan to play in a group of four, you will be playing the same dungeons four times over to make progress.

Even simple things like continuing to help your friend progress in their world is unavailable, and instead after each multiplayer session the lobby needs to be closed and remade.

I was very excited for this remaster, but disappointed with the souless imitation we recieved. FFXIV truly is the last bastion of quality Final Fantasy.
