This game is definitely not a 10, but it's far better than these professional reviewers give it credit for. You just have to experience it for yourself. I'd like to meet the person who has a PSVR and chooses not to try this game and the AIM controller. Both are terrific.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Preliminary review-2 hours in: I will update and give a final review when I finish it. Im playing with the Aim Controller.

This is by far PS VR's best looking game I've played so far. It looks beautiful amazing, very immersive and VR's shortcomings are less noticeable or non-existing (jaggies, blur). The production is top notch, acting is great and the environments are breathtaking, The enemies are creepy and impressive. The whole holographic elements are dreamy.

I felt almost like Samus (Metroid), especially when I fired a missile. Obviously this is only a shooter, not adventure, but the enemies, environment and some weapons remind me of Metroid Prime.

UPDATE: I finished the game. I must say that it's a great experience in VR and recommend it to everybody. The multiplayer is great since you can summon companions to aid you, but I'm still only starting on it.
    ------SPOILERS-------
Good: Full VR immersion. I loved the spiders and the mechanical enemies. Aim controller is awesome. Superb graphics and presentation elements. Machine gun, Shotgun and Rifle. First arc of the story is great.
Bad: Humanoid aliens were so-so, story mode is relatively short, though I still think is long enough for its genre and stage, 2nd arc of the story is not so good and inconclusive, Plasma gun is very cool but not that very effective. Spike gun looks cool it's useless.

The new gun mechanic worked extremely well, and the game was mostly fun to play. But I found the story to be extremely dull, and the game started to feel a lot more repetitive towards the end.

    5) The feel of shooting aliens with aim control is excellent in this game, due to the sound effect, gun

    6) There are 5 guns in this game, each one of them is unique and quite useful, (Infinite ammo)
    7) The replay-ability is high because its challenge mode and coop. Not mention a 9~10/10 difficult platinum

VR done right! Developers take note. Personally for me this is a 10 considering the humble beginnings of gaming in general, if you had to tell a 10 year old me that I would be able to walk around on an alien planet holding a gun as if I were there... Secondly, play standing so you'll get some exercise too :)

Why don't people understand that a game developer for a at most 2.000.000 (PSVR) game platform is never going to get the early investment needed to compete with AAA mutli platform games (100.000.000) (XBOX,PS4)

yes, the PSVR with cables makes it unwise to make this game less restrained. (if enemies could attack from behind it would be a disaster for the PSVR cables)
    etc etc etc

Look at robinson, and look at were we are at now a half year later.
I reckon that at 2019 we will see AAA quality VR only games (RE7 is not VR only) which will directly compete with 2D games.

This game would never be able to achieve a 8, 9 or a 10 in this early VR state.
People need to understand that. Even if the game is a success, it would in numbers mean that it sold about 200.000 (10%) copies
that's about $2 million. profit would be around at most $1 million.
Look at the costs of games with which VR only games will have to compete..:

The haters are reviewing this as if it's not a VR game and only reviewing it as if it is solely a FPS, which it isn't. Yes, as solely a FPS it doesn't stack up well against the enormous budget long-standing industry kings who have had tons of sequels to perfect their franchise, but nobody expected that it would, except evidently the people giving this bad reviews.

As a VR game, in Gen 1 of VR compared to other VR titles and experiences, this game is great. Farpoint's 3D immersive world is amazing, the story is decent and the game play is incredibly fun. When you compare it to other VR FPS games... oh wait... what other VR FPS games? There aren't many out there yet, none exactly like this style; this is definitely a defining game for the first generation of VR FPS games. I'll remember it as the first true VR FPS game and decades from now talk about it and the light gun the way that I occasionally reminisce with my friends and co-workers about original NES games we played as kids.

The campaign story or single-player game could be longer, and would have been nice to have more than one big boss fight, but the game is fun enough that I'll play through it more than once, which is pretty rare for me these days.

I prefer playing with the light gun, but it's not necessary, precision shots are easier with the gun. Tracking of my non-trigger hand doesn't always show up on-screen, and when my character runs the gun doesn't bounce/move properly it oddly stays perfectly horizontally still... Turning with the right stick is turned off by default, that was a stupid decision that's unfortunately pretty common with VR game developers, everyone will need to go to options and turn it on and set it to smooth. Developers do this cause some people get motion sickness, but those people should be the ones that have to turn it off since movement is incredibly unrealistic with it off. If you have VR and you get motion sickness, that should be like if you're color blind and need to go into settings and turn on special disability settings for you, not default your disability to everyone else.

If your a trophy hunter, like most VR games these trophies are really hard to get platinum compared on average to non-VR games. Require lots of gameplay and luck for a few of the harder gun specific tasks.

It's an acceptable game for non-adults to play, the world is beautiful and I stopped several times just to look around. Enemies also startled me a few times, although this isn't a horror game some of the little buggers can sneak up on you. The AI of the enemies isn't great, you can quickly learn how to dodge attacks in ways that keep you safe as the enemy will animate back to a setup position. The different guns are amazingly detailed and cool and fun to fire. One thing that's weird is there doesn't seem to be a way to crouch, which is a pretty common feature in most FPS games when you want to hide behind cover.

Ultimately, the style of this game is kinda like the Time Crisis series, if you ever liked playing those types of games, then you'll absolutely love this... and I think this is on-par for the times as with those for their time. VR game development is at about the stage of 2D game development and graphics back when the arcade Time Crisis 3 came out. Anyway, definitely don't regret buying this game, and it will be one of the games I show off to friends who haven't tried VR.

I'm sure my standards for PSVR will have increased by this time next year, but this is currently one of the best experiences for the platform.

Is it short? Sure--but how long do you want to be standing up for? Oh and you MUST play it with the Aim controller--it's a fantastic peripheral. I didn't bother trying it with the DualShock. Is it simplistic? Yeah--but not by VR shooter

Oh and you MUST play it with the Aim controller--it's a fantastic peripheral. I didn't bother trying it with the DualShock.

Is it simplistic? Yeah--but not by VR shooter standards. In fact, the single player campaign isn't THAT much simpler than many AAA FPS games I've played lately.

Multiplayer is also great. The only thing holding this back is PSVR tracking makes it impossible to turn around--particularly a problem online. Otherwise, one of my top PSVR experiences.

Either my standards for VR games are really low, or the reviewers are totally off base.

But when you are standing up with a VR headset and holding this gun in your hand (Aim Controller) its just explainable. As big fan of the old Halo games im actually feeling like a spartan when im playing Farpoint! it doesn't matter that the game play is kinda empty, when you are standing behind a wall taking cover from aliens fire power, or standing back to back with your friend defending your ground from incoming crawlers, its just a dream come true! This is no doubt the best VR experience that has ever existed! if you own a VR headset you MUST BUY THIS! this is just so god damn amazing! the campign it self takes this game to the top vr game, but the real fun begins at coop!
Though the missions are kinda short and few, i can just keep on playing them over and over and over trying to complete the highest difficulty levels. Its just so amazingly fun to run around with your gun!. That is like the biggest point here, RUN! you cannot compare this game to any other one spot standing or teleporting vr shooters out there, its when you can actuly run around and take cover behind different objects the true fun begins!

For the time being, i would give this 11/10 because right now, there is just nothing that can compare with this! but there are definitely room for improvements!

Here is a list of things i wish will come in the next VR shooter with the Aim Controller:
More Enviroments (Not just desert and rocks everywhere)
    More weapons
Granades (if that is possible somehow?)
    More than 2 player coop
    pvp multiplayer
vehicle riding (Like sitting in a helicopter shooting down at enemies

Here is a list of things i dont like in Farpoint:
    Unlimited ammo
    No proggression
    To short coop mission
No story or objective in coop missions
No reloading on the assault riffle?

I have been playing for many hours over the past weekend and am happy to report that I have experienced no motion sickness what so ever. The only type of motion that I miss is the ability to jump; which probably was left out because that would increase the chance of motion sickness..
The aim controller makes the experience complete; I strongly suggest playing the game with the aim instead of a DS4.

The co-op is also fun to do but because there are not that many players out there it can sometimes take a while before a partner is found.

Farpoint is weak as a shooter but strong as one of the most complete PS VR experiences. Playing it with DualShock 4 is acceptable but definitively the best way to shoot aliens is with the terrific PS VR Aim Controller. If you put aside the boring level design you’ll have pretty good shooting action with the additional challenges.

Short, simple, derivative and somewhat undercooked, but VR does make a difference. Shortage of serious VR games lowers the bar significantly, so you can pick up Farpoint, but do not expect the messiah VR needs. [09/2017, p.53]
