This game is definitely not a 10, but it's far better than these professional reviewers give it credit for. You just have to experience it for yourself. I'd like to meet the person who has a PSVR and chooses not to try this game and the AIM controller. Both are terrific.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Preliminary review-2 hours in: I will update and give a final review when I finish it. Im playing with the Aim Controller.

This is by far PS VR's best looking game I've played so far. It looks beautiful amazing, very immersive and VR's shortcomings are less noticeable or non-existing (jaggies, blur). The production is top notch, acting is great and the environments are breathtaking, The enemies are creepy and impressive. The whole holographic elements are dreamy.

I felt almost like Samus (Metroid), especially when I fired a missile. Obviously this is only a shooter, not adventure, but the enemies, environment and some weapons remind me of Metroid Prime.

UPDATE: I finished the game. I must say that it's a great experience in VR and recommend it to everybody. The multiplayer is great since you can summon companions to aid you, but I'm still only starting on it.
    ------SPOILERS-------
Good: Full VR immersion. I loved the spiders and the mechanical enemies. Aim controller is awesome. Superb graphics and presentation elements. Machine gun, Shotgun and Rifle. First arc of the story is great.
Bad: Humanoid aliens were so-so, story mode is relatively short, though I still think is long enough for its genre and stage, 2nd arc of the story is not so good and inconclusive, Plasma gun is very cool but not that very effective. Spike gun looks cool it's useless.

The new gun mechanic worked extremely well, and the game was mostly fun to play. But I found the story to be extremely dull, and the game started to feel a lot more repetitive towards the end.

    5) The feel of shooting aliens with aim control is excellent in this game, due to the sound effect, gun

    6) There are 5 guns in this game, each one of them is unique and quite useful, (Infinite ammo)
    7) The replay-ability is high because its challenge mode and coop. Not mention a 9~10/10 difficult platinum

VR done right! Developers take note. Personally for me this is a 10 considering the humble beginnings of gaming in general, if you had to tell a 10 year old me that I would be able to walk around on an alien planet holding a gun as if I were there... Secondly, play standing so you'll get some exercise too :)

Why don't people understand that a game developer for a at most 2.000.000 (PSVR) game platform is never going to get the early investment needed to compete with AAA mutli platform games (100.000.000) (XBOX,PS4)

yes, the PSVR with cables makes it unwise to make this game less restrained. (if enemies could attack from behind it would be a disaster for the PSVR cables)
    etc etc etc

Look at robinson, and look at were we are at now a half year later.
I reckon that at 2019 we will see AAA quality VR only games (RE7 is not VR only) which will directly compete with 2D games.

This game would never be able to achieve a 8, 9 or a 10 in this early VR state.
People need to understand that. Even if the game is a success, it would in numbers mean that it sold about 200.000 (10%) copies
that's about $2 million. profit would be around at most $1 million.
Look at the costs of games with which VR only games will have to compete..:

The haters are reviewing this as if it's not a VR game and only reviewing it as if it is solely a FPS, which it isn't. Yes, as solely a FPS it doesn't stack up well against the enormous budget long-standing industry kings who have had tons of sequels to perfect their franchise, but nobody expected that it would, except evidently the people giving this bad reviews.

As a VR game, in Gen 1 of VR compared to other VR titles and experiences, this game is great. Farpoint's 3D immersive world is amazing, the story is decent and the game play is incredibly fun. When you compare it to other VR FPS games... oh wait... what other VR FPS games? There aren't many out there yet, none exactly like this style; this is definitely a defining game for the first generation of VR FPS games. I'll remember it as the first true VR FPS game and decades from now talk about it and the light gun the way that I occasionally reminisce with my friends and co-workers about original NES games we played as kids.

The campaign story or single-player game could be longer, and would have been nice to have more than one big boss fight, but the game is fun enough that I'll play through it more than once, which is pretty rare for me these days.

I prefer playing with the light gun, but it's not necessary, precision shots are easier with the gun. Tracking of my non-trigger hand doesn't always show up on-screen, and when my character runs the gun doesn't bounce/move properly it oddly stays perfectly horizontally still... Turning with the right stick is turned off by default, that was a stupid decision that's unfortunately pretty common with VR game developers, everyone will need to go to options and turn it on and set it to smooth. Developers do this cause some people get motion sickness, but those people should be the ones that have to turn it off since movement is incredibly unrealistic with it off. If you have VR and you get motion sickness, that should be like if you're color blind and need to go into settings and turn on special disability settings for you, not default your disability to everyone else.

If your a trophy hunter, like most VR games these trophies are really hard to get platinum compared on average to non-VR games. Require lots of gameplay and luck for a few of the harder gun specific tasks.

It's an acceptable game for non-adults to play, the world is beautiful and I stopped several times just to look around. Enemies also startled me a few times, although this isn't a horror game some of the little buggers can sneak up on you. The AI of the enemies isn't great, you can quickly learn how to dodge attacks in ways that keep you safe as the enemy will animate back to a setup position. The different guns are amazingly detailed and cool and fun to fire. One thing that's weird is there doesn't seem to be a way to crouch, which is a pretty common feature in most FPS games when you want to hide behind cover.

Ultimately, the style of this game is kinda like the Time Crisis series, if you ever liked playing those types of games, then you'll absolutely love this... and I think this is on-par for the times as with those for their time. VR game development is at about the stage of 2D game development and graphics back when the arcade Time Crisis 3 came out. Anyway, definitely don't regret buying this game, and it will be one of the games I show off to friends who haven't tried VR.

I'm sure my standards for PSVR will have increased by this time next year, but this is currently one of the best experiences for the platform.

Is it short? Sure--but how long do you want to be standing up for? Oh and you MUST play it with the Aim controller--it's a fantastic peripheral. I didn't bother trying it with the DualShock. Is it simplistic? Yeah--but not by VR shooter

Oh and you MUST play it with the Aim controller--it's a fantastic peripheral. I didn't bother trying it with the DualShock.

Is it simplistic? Yeah--but not by VR shooter standards. In fact, the single player campaign isn't THAT much simpler than many AAA FPS games I've played lately.

Multiplayer is also great. The only thing holding this back is PSVR tracking makes it impossible to turn around--particularly a problem online. Otherwise, one of my top PSVR experiences.

Either my standards for VR games are really low, or the reviewers are totally off base.

But when you are standing up with a VR headset and holding this gun in your hand (Aim Controller) its just explainable. As big fan of the old Halo games im actually feeling like a spartan when im playing Farpoint! it doesn't matter that the game play is kinda empty, when you are standing behind a wall taking cover from aliens fire power, or standing back to back with your friend defending your ground from incoming crawlers, its just a dream come true! This is no doubt the best VR experience that has ever existed! if you own a VR headset you MUST BUY THIS! this is just so god damn amazing! the campign it self takes this game to the top vr game, but the real fun begins at coop!
Though the missions are kinda short and few, i can just keep on playing them over and over and over trying to complete the highest difficulty levels. Its just so amazingly fun to run around with your gun!. That is like the biggest point here, RUN! you cannot compare this game to any other one spot standing or teleporting vr shooters out there, its when you can actuly run around and take cover behind different objects the true fun begins!

For the time being, i would give this 11/10 because right now, there is just nothing that can compare with this! but there are definitely room for improvements!

Here is a list of things i wish will come in the next VR shooter with the Aim Controller:
More Enviroments (Not just desert and rocks everywhere)
    More weapons
Granades (if that is possible somehow?)
    More than 2 player coop
    pvp multiplayer
vehicle riding (Like sitting in a helicopter shooting down at enemies

Here is a list of things i dont like in Farpoint:
    Unlimited ammo
    No proggression
    To short coop mission
No story or objective in coop missions
No reloading on the assault riffle?

I have been playing for many hours over the past weekend and am happy to report that I have experienced no motion sickness what so ever. The only type of motion that I miss is the ability to jump; which probably was left out because that would increase the chance of motion sickness..
The aim controller makes the experience complete; I strongly suggest playing the game with the aim instead of a DS4.

The game give you a couple different options for how you want to turn in game, I leave it on smooth turning at the highest setting, 11. I am not that prone to motion sickness when I am in control of the motion, so this game feels fine for me.

The aim controller just works amazingly well. When I first realized you could actually look down the sight of the gun and see a holographic crosshair I was freaking out. The immersive-ness is incredible and has me keep coming back for more. The nausea factor for me is slim to none. For reference for me, Scavengers Odyssey in VR Worlds almost made me puke, same with RIGS at first but I got used to that. Robinson was okay for the most part but I needed frequent breaks and RE: 7 was similar but way better than Robinson.

Anyways, many review sites are kinda slamming it for being simple by 2d standards and I think its a fair criticism to some degree, but man are they really downplaying the fun of the simplicity of just romping around on a virtual planet blasting away at spiders, robots, and aliens. I genuinely thought the story was actually pretty decent too. Haven't tried multiplayer because I have yet to renew my PS Plus but most people who bought the game seem to be enjoying it immensely.

Overall despite its main downfall being simplicity, it truly one of the most unique, one of a kind experiences I've had with gaming to date and for that, I give it a 9.

I noticed the brained zero's are on show as always. A zero game is one total broken and unplayable. This game isn't that at all. It plays just fine, but is it any good. First before I go into the game I want to talk about the aim controller a little. It fits in the hand very nice and all the buttons are well laid out, except the touch button which lucky for us isn't needed in Farpoint. II noticed the brained zero's are on show as always. I love the aim controller and playing this game without it would of been a whole lot less fun. I would say the only down side is the drift some people have talked about which didn't happen to me, the going out of the play area which also didn't happen to me as pressing option button once and awhile help with placing. The story isn't half bad with a slow start, deep middle and ok ending. The graphics are good for a VR title and the usual blur is better in this title than others. (PS4 Pro) However it is bland and boring at times. The only time you get something amazing is when some event in the game has a purple wormhole spitting out alien mega space stations or you face of with a huge creature. The game play is OK but nothing special. shooting the same baddies that look like predator mated with a black window spider gets a little repetitive and it was very nice to see new enemies before I pulled my hair out of my ball sack of pure boredom. The aim controller was a pleasure to use. Shooting with the thing was so good I was fantasizing about what games could use this tool. At the moment I'm also playing Playerunknowns Battlegrounds and this aim controller and VR would make this game so needed. Anyway end fantasy. Looking down the sights to shoot was a selling point for me and VR just makes normal feeling games so much better that when a good game comes like RES7 it's just to good to miss. This game is good but lacks the feel of a true triple A title.
For the fact it has an OK story, OK graphics, OK shooting manics and a amazing aim controller I'm going to give this a 7/10. Tempted to make it a 10/10 just to balance the brain dead zero's but that needs be saved for a TLOU 2 or Witcher 4. Must have this game if you already own a PSVR plus the aim controller, however don't pay through the roof.

Farpoint is a generic first person shooter THAT YOU ARE INSIDE! That alone is worth the cost of admission, to me. I play a standing up and an explosion early in the game startled me so much it nearly knocked me off my feet. I feel like I'm the kids in commercials I used to mock growing up as they dodged and crouched playing NES games. But in Farpoint, all that is for real.

One peeve I have is I wish the worlds were a bit more interactive. They are about a interactive as your average PS1 game in that you can only work with what's part of the story. Speaking of the story, its short. Unfortunately short. Not very deep or detailed either. You can look at the back of the box and decipher the story pretty much from that.

Shooting in this game is truly realistic. Not only do you have to actually align your sights with what you are shooting at, but the spray of the guns can be sporadic as well (just like a real gun). Unlike the heroes in most 1st person shooter video games, you actually have to put your arms up yourself and trust me, its a workout (no wonder Duke Nukem, the Doom guy, and Blazkowicz have huge arms). The enemies are cut and paste and eventually you do get the hang of their patterns, but it is what it is. I've yet to really try the multiplayer experience, but I am very much looking forward to it.

Dings on the game are for a superficial and short story and lack of customization and variation. Its a point A to point B game, but it is truly a blast. This biggest problem with the game has less to do with the game and more to due with the price tag. Yes you can play the game with the dual shock controller successfully, but this game was truly designed for VR aim controller. Being that I didn't buy the game yet, I have to pay for the controller separately which is a pretty penny. I think they could have bundled the items together better rather than the current $80 package they have going right now. For a discount, I may consider it, but for now, its quite the cash grab (especially considering how much you already pay for the VR itself).

Hopefully this game has some DLC and more features in the future because it is pretty bare-bones right now. I had been playing Eve:Valkyrie for awhile, but this is the game I was really waiting for with the VR. You shouldn't compare it to games like Battlefield, Call of Duty, or Destiny because it is not those games. However, there is still a large amount of untapped potential with this game and that's the real pull for it. Hopefully they continue to fill the empty spaces with content because the game in itself is a blast to play.

You'll find out that while the story is a bit cliche and that certain limitations that had to be placed to avoid motion sickness would make this at best a very mediocre REGULAR FPS game, the fact that it is in VR (and with a great AIM controller) makes it worth while. The gunplay is meaty and feels on point. The movement is smooth and I haven't experienced any motion sickness.

I can accept the criticisms of some of the serious reviews, but the users that are scoring it with a 0 are totally wrong. (one of them gives it a 0 just because he is an Xbox guy - just look at his other reviews). Zeroes should only exist for absolute broken games.

I invite everyone that actually HAS a PSVR to give it a try.

The story is pretty good throughout the first two acts, but stapled a third act on that added nothing to the story but made it much more confusing. And the greatest sin is that the game just ends, with no resolution. You fight through a bunch of regular enemies (some of whom get insta-kill attacks towards the end), watch a cutscene that explains nothing and makes you furious at the characters, and roll credits. I really loved this game, but it should have ended at the end of the second act, it feels like they stapled an extra 2 hours onto the game, and dramatically harmed the overall experience in doing so. The aim controller is awesome, but this game will be completely forgotten once another big shooter is released. As is, I'd give it a 7:passable. About the game: I completed it and it was a less-than-okay experience. You have to get used to low-res PSVR at first, at least you do when you use VR on PC a lot, but when you do the gunplay becomes more exciting. That magic will pass after two hours, though, and then you realize that you're just playing another very poor and truly generic first person shooter game. It's literally walking from point A to B in a narrow lineair path while shooting at stuff. It's so generic that it almost felt insulting, it lasts 5 hours (!!) and it costs near full price (!!!!!). It'd be rewarded with 3's all across the board had it been released on anything else.

For me, a controller that's the same as the one I've been using for years on PC (the PP Gun for Vive, which is even better actually and truly looks/feels like an actual gun) and the PSVR headset which is just worse than my Vive do not improve upon the experience. They do not make it unique because it isn't and for me, some average VR-peripherals do not magically turn a 3-game into a 8.5-game. It does make it a bit better, so I will let this get away with a 4, but that's already pushing this garbage. Sorry, sonyponies.

I found Farpoint felt very slow and restricted with the character movement, the fact you can only rotate the camera left right not up and down and the slow walk and run speed really wasnt fun for me. No jumping or climbing, just a slow jog at best through long boring environments. When I died it was usually because of the painfully slow reloading of weapons or the fact you cant duck behind cover- no duck button, or the characters slow movement, making shooting from cover the only real option a lot of the time, no chance of running and jumping, strafing around your enemies.
Even with the smooth turning and turn speed on 11 it was slow. Maybe it's supposed to feel like you're stuck in a restrictive space suit? (if so, what a dumb idea, who wants to pay to be trapped in a rubbish space suit)
This game is probably great if it's your first time in vr, but for the gamers, or me at least, it's a huge slow awkward stumble backwards from even what we had in the first demo disk with Scavangers odyssey.
Hopefully developers will stop dumbing down and start improving on what we already have.

Plus the ending sucked. What a downer. The whole game is just a bit depressing from start to finish, the characters are trapped in a horrible situation and doomed to make the best of it, the world is drab and uninspiring, theres zero exploration, just follow the path or fall to your death, and seriously, I enjoyed the heartwarming story bit in the middle, then the story just went downhill into oblivion and ended on a down depressing note. Shooting was a bit of fun at first, but tracking on the aim regularly wandered. Sadly not impressed. A depressing, fairly tedious adventure.

And yet again, another short, uninspired VR game gets released for the PS4. I'd recommend purchasing it when it's in the bargain bin of your local game store or on sale in the PS store. Definitely not worth the full price admission.

This is exactly what I want from psvr games, amazing story, great gameplay, challege modes with weapon upgrades to keep the fun going along with multiplayer pvp and co op. it may be a bit pricey with aim controller but I would say this is a need to own psvr games and is as essential to psvr as halo was for the original xbox.

Pros - great story, great gameplay, amazing use of psvr

Cons - ending was iffy and it feels like there could have been another 2 chapters at the end to flesh out what happens and give us a second boss fight.

I just don't think VR games will work for open world games. It will probably benefit best with arcade type games where the game moves for you to proceed to the next stage.

The graphics aren't great as it was hyped to be. The images have less depth than in Skyrim and often it feels like you're just staring at a poster.

Now the part i should have mentioned first is the game play. The game play is slow and boring. The monsters are simple and not interesting to fight. It just feels like you're shooting at a non-responsive bot because they don't have mechanics to retaliate. Most of the time you're just walking around, scanning images to discover the story. Although i heard the story gets good, but doesn't end well, the game play was just unbearable.

This game fails to be an "experience" like Batman VR. it puts you in a world that seems fascinating but is dull after several minutes. It uses the VR as a gimmick and the game play is shallow. I would like to rate this higher but i don't want other people to spend their money expecting something more. Go play Astrobot, Moss, I Expect You To Die, heck even London Heist and the diving simulator from VR Worlds was a better experience and well worth the money

Farpoint is the kind of game I've wanted ever since the FPS genre was invented, and man does it deliver. Aim, shoot, one-hand shotgun to the side, duck, spin, aim down sights, hip fire, run one way while looking another while shooting in a third.....and gun-high-five your co-op buddy when the dust settles. This kind of gameplay has simply never been possible before on a gaming console. Ever. Ever. End of story.

Oh wait, the story! My goodness, the story is way more amazing than I expected. Dark, touching, thought-provoking. A stunning example of what characters and narrative in VR can be. I am still vaguely haunted by one scene eye-to-eye with a life-sized character.

Farpoint sets a new bar for PSVR and for shooters in general. All things are possible after this. Get it, get an Aim, and enjoy.

Farpoint is an excellent game with an amazing gun. The adventure is over all to quickly, but its a blast while it lasts.

The story for the game is actually quite good. Frequently reviewed as dull or generic, its actually excellent. The game's single player mode is quite long for VR, but short compared to any non-VR game. The gun is what makes this game a truly unique experience.

The gun is what makes this game a truly unique experience. There is nothing quite like actually looking down the sights of the gun lining up your shots. The gun is an amazing device that will be compatible with at least a few upcoming games.

Replay-ability is brought up with the inclusion of co-op mode, just be aware its co-op, not deathmatch. Its fun playing with other people, but there are things missing here that normal games have standard now a day. Namely, unlockables!

What multiplayer shooter has nothing to work towards? There are no new characters, guns, skins or anything to unlock. There is just a leaderboard. Its better than nothing, and it is quite fun, when it works, but for me after attempting 30 online matches I was booted, dropped, disconnected from 28 of them. Over 2 nights I managed to complete 2 online games.

Be aware of these issues, go in knowing what the game is. You are there for a good time, but not a long time.

Game play is pretty fun, and in some areas you can get overwhelmed by enemies if you aren't careful or aren't switching weapons. Some of the boss fights especially can get difficult. There are quite a few areas though that seem sparse. Once you learn where some of the enemies come from, as in what type of terrain features, you can quickly learn to expect them and shoot before they've had a chance to do anything.

The length was pretty decent. I didn't have my VR legs yet on the first couple play through sessions, so it ended up taking me around a week of gradually longer play times to beat it. I kind of wish it was a bit longer, but compared to many of the other VR titles, it is long.

The graphics were pretty good and the UI was pretty solid as well. I liked the story and finding bits of it to complete and move the story on the way was a nice touch.

Movement was pretty well done with the aim controller. I never really had any moments where I was fumbling and everything was explained and laid out well enough of the aim to make sense and be easily usable in more active situations.

I gave it 8 because I wish it was a bit longer, I ran into many spots of sparse enemies which combined with being hallway shooter (semi confined space and can't really explore a whole lot) made the game feel even shorter. However I do feel like the game is one you definitely should pick up.

Farpoint is weak as a shooter but strong as one of the most complete PS VR experiences. Playing it with DualShock 4 is acceptable but definitively the best way to shoot aliens is with the terrific PS VR Aim Controller. If you put aside the boring level design you’ll have pretty good shooting action with the additional challenges.
