-It's boring, an open world that feels lifeless, most of the quests seemed to follow the same pattern of kill enemies, find an item, go back to quest giver REPEAT.
    -No RPG elements

Just a mess of a game I have no idea how these "experts" rated this game so high.

This game is not as long as it should be, not worth the money i spent, the previous games were better, and every fallout game i have played has way to many glitches, i am very dissapointed in bethesda.

The explorstion is also not so great, because is not like sjyrim where you enter a new area and a quests starts. I needed to search on google where to find more quests because i couldnt find myself in the game. I wanted to max all characters relationships, but there is so few endgame content thatthere were no wuests to level their relationship anymore. Expand

This is basically Fallout 3.5: same quests, same interface, same bugs... hell, even similar (boring) story.
Too bad 7 years have passed since F3 release, and it seems Bethesda didn't notice.
A sad attempt to milk some more money from the franchise with zero effort.

To the people giving it 0's 1's and 2's... you REALLY dont have a god damn clue what a 0 game is.. go play Mindjack or Ride to Hell Retribution.. THEN come back here and talk to me about giving Fallout 4 a 0. Yer **** STUPID.

The game is fine. It HAS been dumbed down ALOT.. but it's still a fun trip through the wasteland.

    It's a solid 7.

Like many others, I made this account because I was itching to review this game. I wish I had read the user reviews before purchasing it, but it doesn't matter anymore as this game is on the shelf of my nearest Gamestop.

Regarding the actual game, I'd say it's more close to Rage than Fallout 3. Yes, it still retains Fallout 3's assets, from the early character customization to your escape from the Vault and subsequent embracing of a post apocalyptic world.
However that is where all the similarities end. Gone are your SPECIALs and the importance of your well spent points when tackling quests differently. Whether previous Fallout games awarded your abilities in medicine, explosives, barter, charisma, science by having a different set of options regarding dialogue, the newest Fallout 4 gets rid of all that in favor of a dumbed down and more streamlined dialogue wheel.

It's not like the outcome matters anyways since about 75% of the game is resolved with violence. And it is not some violence that will affect your persona later on because no matter what you do, you will still be heralded as the hero of Vault 111.

I won't spoil the game because most of my criticism revolves around a very mediocre quest and not so interesting lore.

I believe Bethesda made this game exclusively for the new fans, and if you are someone who have never played a Fallout game, you may like it. For those returning Fallout fans, keep waiting for the next Fallout game because this one, is not.

The first hour of the game left me craving Fallout 3, but the more time I've invested into the game, the more it's grown on me. The last 5 hours I've spent in-game convinced me to change my review and increase my rating.

    Graphics/Environment
    Pros:
    - good variety in landscape
    - variable (and sudden) changes in weather patterns are an AWESOME addition
    - graphics have been improved to some degree
    Cons:
    - pretty much all of the same issues as previous Fallout/Elder Scrolls titles (character animations, dialogue face/lip synching, etc)
    - graphics haven't improved that much
    - graphics look "plastic"
    - seems to lack the dark, dirty, grungy, gritty feel that I've grown to expect from Fallout titles

    Player Character/Backstory
    Pros:
    - pre-voiced names ("Ah, Mr. Slaughter!")
    - facial scars are cool
    Cons:
    - new customization system is tedious - makes me miss the old slide-bars
    - not enough variety (hairstyles, colors, etc)
    - definitive back story and only one preset voice - really breaks immersion for me
    - You aren't making a character, you're just repainting the stock car Bethesda wants you to drive.

    RPG Elements
Where to start? Well, let's sum it up in one word: "Streamlining"
    Pros:
    -
    Cons:
    - Skills/traits have been completely scrapped in favor of a simplified ("streamlined") perk tree
    - Impact of S.P.E.C.I.A.L. attributes has essentially been reduced to unlocking perks further down the tree
    - Entirety of character development is perk choices, so leveling up does not feel nearly as rewarding (compared to assigning skills points to increase character competency and selecting a perk to add variety)

As a stand-alone Adventure FPS, I don't hate the skill tree. I don't hate the leveling system.
As a Fallout title, it infuriates me.
It doesn't feel like an RPG because it isn't an RPG.

    Gameplay
    Pros:
    - combat has been vastly improved
    - sprinting has finally been implemented
    - gunplay outside of V.A.T.S. is extremely fun (this coming from someone that almost exclusively used V.A.T.S. in previous titles)
    - D-pad favorites menu is much improved
    Cons:
    - I hate the new V.A.T.S. - overpowered or not, they should have left it as it was

    Dialogue Wheel
It's bad. It's bad and they should feel bad. The options are bland and uninspired. In every conversation, you get the same four options: Yes, No, Sarcasm, Huh?. Occasionally there will be a speech check thrown in, but the goal and endgame might not always be what they seem. I'm rarely invested enough to care to try, though (or to try to care). I'm usually just trying to get through the conversation as quickly as possible so I can go back to shooting things. Conversations are dangerous territory for me because the longer I'm stuck spinning the dialogue wheel, the more I'm thinking about shooting the person I'm talking to. Conversations lack depth. Characters lack depth. There's no wit, no dark humor. Everyone is dull and boring, haphazardly thrown in to populate the wasting wasteland. I don't really find myself caring about anyone until they're staring down the barrel of my 10mm hand-cannon.
People also praise the "open" dialogue (you are not locked into the conversation), but I find it ruins a lot of the immersion for me and makes the conversations seem even more shallow.

    Crafting
I didn't think I'd like it nearly as much as I do. I spent 8 straight hours last night just scrapping and building up my settlement. I just couldn't stop.I kept trying to break away and work on quests, but something always manages to pull me back in. It's addicting and it's fun. In my opinion, it's one of the biggest redeeming aspects of the game. I love modding my weapons (my 10mm is GODLIKE), I love modding my armor, and I love settlement building. But it's a double-edged sword, because it's fueled by one of the worst aspects of the game: looting Looting "Hey, remember all of that useless crap we left all over the wasteland? Now it's useful! Isn't that awesome?" No. No it's not. First off, it takes all of the fun out of looting. Not only did they over-simplify it by allowing you to pull items from containers without opening them (eliminating a certain level of immersion), they also removed the need to consciously LOOT. You used to have to comb through the crap for the few trinkets worth taking. Now that everything's useful, there's no point in being picky. Take it all until your inventory is full, dump it, then go again. If it's not bolted down, it's going with you. It's not an art form anymore. Adhesive [expletive deleted] Verdict Is it an enjoyable game? Definitely. Is it Fallout? Not really. It's an excellent post-apoc shooter (with more depth than a standard FPS), but a horrible Fallout installment. Take that for what it is

My initial impressions of the game were more positive but now I am bit fed up with FO4. The dialogue system falls flat not due to the fact that we have less choices but because the choices and the writing in general is of a lesser quality. There are few UNIQUE side-quests which is quite disappointing and most side quests are just opportunities to farm and nothing more. Witcher 3 made up for grindy elements with great writing but FO4 has very functional writing, getting invested in the world is quite difficult.

Combat can be a lot of fun and the gibbing is cool, way way way better gunplay than FO3. The best part of the game for me is all the emergent gameplay stuff like walking around one of the rundown districts and then hearing a gunfight commence somewhere near by or walking into an ambush at night time. The difficulty is quite artificial though as most enemies take way too much damage and it just feels stupid having to shoot a human enemy dressed in light armor seven times with a shotgun at point blank range. Once you get near the level 50 mark you will just be massacring everything though and that becomes boring quickly.

Crafting weapon mods is really nice and quite essential for most char types but settlement building requires too much of your time and is ultimately useless outside of key missions.

There's nothing really memorable about FO4 other than it's size. There are dozens and dozens of locations to visit and dungeons to raid but this is all for naught as the quests just lose steam very quickly.

I read that this game was going to be so good and expansive that it required the better system. I always felt Fallout was great but had MANY areas for improvement. I imagined this Fallout would be the same great "choose your adventure" type format, with better game play. Destiny's game play, to me is among the best but could learn from Fallout's story and story telling. I envisioned vastly improved game play that fixed many of the ridiculously annoying things like issues with your companion, from them disappearing to when they are in the area, but cannot be found. If I have to chase Dogmeat one more time to access gear I'm going to lose my mind. I may have figured out the inventory thing now, that I got the supply lines perk and I can just dismantle everything, but I'm level 40 and just got it now so we'll have to see. You would think you'd want your players focused on the story and not juggling crap all the time. I ended up putting all my companions at the Sanctuary and loading them all up. So many things about this game SCREAM lazy. The freaking Brotherhood of Steel. LAZY. The Institute, LAZY. The synth's looking exactly like the dudes from I, Robot....LAZY. Everything else that is exactly the same as previous Fallout games. LAZY. I think all of these companies need creative people who are not game designers. If they do have these people they are terrible at picking them. There are also SO many things that take you out of the game. I have left Preston at the Sanctuary the entire game and have the 18 settlers with 80% happiness level. There's about 65,000 turrets and all other defensive crap. People are still getting kidnapped and then when I get called for the kidnapping the settler asks, "Are you from the Minutemen?" Well, I've been here 800 times, built the entire city and tote a sledgehammer with rocket propulsion....YA, I'm from the Minutemen. It would be pretty easy to have a single line of dialogue as you increase your completed missions for an area. If you are going to complete several missions for each area, I think there should be more attacks on the area that test the defense you have spent your time and loot creating. Instead of the kidnapping already happening, why not have the kidnapping attempt be the mission. Have a pack of Super Mutants rush your settlement and see what happens. Even if it is a no-brainer victory it would be nice to see the stuff in action more. Maybe it happens later in the game.
I'm at level 40 and have only changed my armor once. I was getting tired of managing inventory, managing power armor and managing settlements, so I dropped the difficultly level and ditched the power armor. All the power armor did was let me jump from the top of satellite arrays, which was fun for a bit.
The construction of settlements is FAR from intuitive. Apparently walls and fences can only happen at right angles, so when terrain gets hilly, fences go sub-terrain. There is a big disconnect in what a player envisions to what they can actually do.
The companion is terrible. So terrible they have the perk of going it alone. My companion does no real damage and just goes off and dies 90% of the time. Sometimes Dogmeat holds a guy for me that I can tee up with a melee weapon, but most of the time he just screws up sneak attacks or I just use him as a beacon to draw fire until he dies. Has anyone ever used a Stimpak mid battle to revive him? I love the parts of the game where he's sniffing stuff out and using his unique skills. There could be more of that for all the different companions.
I know this is long and won't be read, but I really don't get why you can't have game play as good as Destiny and a story/world like Fallout. I also don't understand why creativity is such a low priority. In my business we get hundreds of idea from users that have no expertise in the discipline. Yes, 99 of the ideas out of 100 are flushed, but a few times I ask the designers, "Is there a reason we can't do that?" and when the answer is no, it can be a great concept to bring to your product. I guess because even though there may be many behind the scenes things that required a PS4 or XBox one, as the end-user, I don't see them. This feels like something that could have been released a year after New Vegas on PS3 or XBox 360

There is arguably 1 "bad" route/decision, but even then its justified as "doing the right thing" rather than "hey I just wanna be a psycho."
That's why people love open world RPGs and specifically Fallout, the freedom.
So if I'm bashing it, why a 7? I still plugged over 60 hours into the game across various characters, and each playstyle is unique, different, and fun, and I actually found new places/items each time I played. It kept me entertained with all the stuff on the side, but a poor story and lack of true free will was disappointing.

So firstly, if you played Fallout 3 then it's more of the same with slightly less of the story/rpg elements, slightly more shooter elements and a minecraft sub-game. My first thought was actually 'this is fallout 3 all over again'. As I've played on I can see it's a super enhanced version of fallout 3 in most ways, but still it feels really familiar. They even use the same radio tracks again.

Secondly, there are lots of bugs. I have 4 quests that i can't do because of glitches, and everytime i leave a settlement it stops recognising that i've provided enough beds for my settlers, so i can't gain happiness. I'm sure these things get patched, but you can't give a 10/10 when there's such big bugs.

Lastly on the negative side, the story so far is a bit flat in comparison to FO3 and NV ones. I've been in 3 vaults and none of them are nearly as interesting as ones in other games.

Positives, the new songs they added are good, the DJ is good eventually and the graphics are an upgrade. The fallout feel is there, and settlements are fun although i'd like a bit more structured story and less settlements if I'm honest.

Overall it's still a good game. It's good to kill time with, it's great if you've never played fallout 3 before, but I'd wait for GOTY edition personally.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was really looking forward to this game and playing on rainy days of winter. I pre-ordered it. Alas, it doesn't appear that this one is going to hold my attention. Before you tune me out, I've played Fallout 3, New Vegas, Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim. So I'm not a Bethesda basher. I've given them free passes in the past. This game has been a long time in development. This time they don't get a free pass.

The graphic engine is very dated and after playing The Wild Hunt, I was expecting a lot more. It's very 2008, but we're in 2015 and on a different generation of consoles. Black Ops 3 looks great.

Then there's the dialogue wheel. While I'm used to this in Bioware games, the "paraphrasing" was just horrid, and reminded me of the gem in Mass Effect 1 "Asari reproduction" dialogue choice with Liara. which had your character, Commander Shepard, look like a complete idiot. But with the Fallout dialogue you can say "Yes", "No", "Sarcastic", or "Help" except saying no to someone only gives the NPC another opportunity to persuade you to take their quest, and "No" is darkened the next time. So if you see someone doing something and you don't want to do a side quest, don't talk to them. You can't refuse the quest.

And I loved how the woman I was playing, who seemed to have the vulnerabilities of a 1950s housewife in the prologue, left the vault and became a gun toting vault heroine who found the Minutemen cowering inside a museum against raiders and had to rescue them using a suit of power armor and mini-gun that she just so happened to know how to use. If Bethesda had given my character a military background I might have bought that, but they didn't. It was very lazy writing. The whole game story is very lazy writing.

I really wanted to come here and give this game a 9, but I can't do that. That said, I've played worse games to which I've given a 4, so I have to give this a 6. If you're a Fallout fan, buy it but wait for the price to drop.

Probably my most anticipated game of the back half of the year, I'm sad to say I feel fairly disappointed now that I have literally completed everything in the game. AndProbably my most anticipated game of the back half of the year, I'm sad to say I feel fairly disappointed now that I have literally completed everything in the game. Yes, everything short of the random encounters you can't control. Every side quest, every misc quest (yes, I got a list to see if I had done them all), and every trophy. Saw all endings, wasn't impressed by any of them. And this all took about 125 hours of total game time.

125 hours is nothing to scoff at and it would be nice if many more single player games gave half as much but I came to the realization that a huge amount of that time was spent messing with settlements - and not really enjoying it. IMO, settlements aren't worth the time because the biggest benefits to maintaining settlements - access to scavaged goods, food, caps from traders, and traders themselves - is outweighed by the fact that the player must take all the requisite perks to make those things worthwhile. But taking those perks means you end up earning more by simply exploring, you never hurt for food or drink or ammo, and there are so many crafting stations throughout the Commonwealth that you don't really NEED a settlement to mod your armor, weapons, or craft chems or food. Settlements don't even provide a sense of community as the NPCs are mindless drones named "Settler" or some such and are awkward to assign to tasks. The entire process of building and maintaining a settlement is a frustrating experience and unless you're truly insane the Benevolent Leader achievement/trophy isn't worth the time. Realistically, settlements only exist to pad player gametime and force players to handicap themselves by carrying around loads of junk to tote to each workstation.

The gameplay outside of the settlements is largely the same as Fallout 3 except the gunplay is a lot better... at least once you can stop relying on the god awful pipe weapons that you're practically forced to use early in the game. I won't complain that it's too much like FO3 because that's good enough for me but the world felt so very lifeless and non-threatening. Outside of the main city of Boston, you barely run into enemies. If you've leveled up just by exploring like many of us have done those enemies are completely trivial. Deathclaws were literally the only things I feared. Super Mutants, Mirelurk Queens.. meh, no problem. I still don't understand how they weighed stats, especially for conversations. With 10 charisma and the Gift of Gab perk and 3 stars in Lady Killer, I was still failing most of my charisma conversation rolls against women. And forget even trying with men. I couldn't make heads or tails of it.

The story made an OK amount of sense but I couldn't help but feel they stole a page straight out of Mass Effect's playbook with the Institute. Not to mention the Institute's world view is ALMOST the same as the Brotherhood of Steel (only we can be trusted with technology/saving the world from itself/redefining humanity as we see fit, et cetera) so it didn't really feel like a threat. I honestly found myself missing the Enclave.

I enjoyed my time with the game but ultimately I feel that Fallout 4 was mostly candy that didn't truly satiate my hunger for the Fallout franchise, for lack of a better metaphor. Unlike Elder Scrolls, which has a lot more replay value in having different classes, insane amounts of skills and trees, and so many different branching story arcs, I can't see a reason to play FO4 again until the DLC (and only if said DLC is of decent quality). I will say that I only had two crashes and two texture bugs (not including settlement building which is nothing BUT texture bugs) during my entire playtime which was quite the refreshing change following the insanity that was the Fallout 3 launch on PS3.

You spend ages trying to get the walls of your house to snap together in the one orientation it refuses to go into and then it has no baring on the story. I played for about 50 hours and never once saw a Raider attack. So what the is point in even having it?

Crafting weapons is cool until you realise there are about 20 guns in the game and you'll have seen them all within the first hour. It is just the same old crappy guns with slightly different mods.

The factions are boring. There are no choices in this game that make any significant difference.

Largely you will run around in boring places, fighting boring enemies with boring weapons and you will have NOTHING to show for it when you are done.

I'm going back to Witcher 3. There is more writing and interesting information in a single Bestiary entry in Witcher 3 than the entire script of Fallout 4.

However Fallout 4 was a bit harder to forgive as it didn't strike me as all that ambitious. The Witcher 3 is ambitious. Fallout 4 at times felt LAZY by comparison. I don't believe that graphics make a game, and I certainly wasn't expecting much from a Bethesda game (I mean, come on it's Bethesda). But I still couldn't shake the constant feeling of "I wish they had tried a bit harder" as I observed some of the fine details in the game. Also, after 12 hours the story still hadn't drawn me in and I found myself zoning out during a lot of the sidequest dialogues, so I ultimately decided to return it to Amazon. I hope Bethesda releases some patches soon to fix all the bugs and crashes for people who are enjoying the game. Expand

I have completely disliked fallout 3 that was more or less a morrowind in the fallout setting, but the boys have nailed it this time. The side characters are memorable and interesting, and this game is as close to the old fallout magic as games can get. If you absolutely loved F1 & F2 - you should at least give this a check.

I know I know you can't compare the two together but both games were made by Bethesda and there are definitely things that one can expect from a Bethesda game.

I was really hyped out for Fallout 4 since I enjoy FPS but hate the multi-player, the scripted campaigns and the lack of freedom and open world so Fallout 4 was a match made in heaven.

The main features that made me really excited to buy it on day 1 was:
    - FPS in RPG
-In depth Armour and Weapon Customization
    -Huge Open World
    -Settlement Construction(really like this one)
    -Vertibirds
    -Smart Companions
    -Freedom of Choices

I expected Fallout 4 to live up to the 10/10, game of the year hype that everyone said it would but sadly, not really.

Fallout 4 isn't a bad game but its just a good-OK game hence my score. The main issues i had with the game that wasn't good was:

-Dumbed down Dialogue, no really choice you basically can say yes only
    -Poor Frame-rate
    -Clearly Outdated game engine
    -Story is borderline
-Exploration has no real rewards, most of the time its a randomly generated equipment with star bonus
-Weak side quest, you will do a lot of 'clear the area' quest
-Most outfits are not aesthetically pleasing
-Perks have very little effect not really game changing except for a few
    -Lip-sync is not always right
    -Long and abundant loading screens
    -Crashes randomly
    -Ugly character Models

Aside from negatives the games also has some features that are redeeming:

-Living world, brotherhood of steel members can be seen fighting others on their own not because of scripted events.
    -Power Armour
    -Vertibirds
    -Well-crafted and designed world

Fallout 4 is good but not the game of year that one would expect it to be... Fallout 4 experiences crashes, lags, frame rate issues and long loading times that further worsens the enjoyment of a game with already no real freedom of choice, weak story and mindless quests. Its not terrible game but a so-so one, if you really love RPGs then you can give Fallout 4 a go.

There's no info about the weight and the value of an item before picking it up, so how the **** would I know if i should pick it up? what were they thinking!!! The weapons have a very poor description and you have no clue how the weapon looks before equiping it. That's complete **** why they did that! There's no excuse to screwing up the game like that.
Another bad point is the enemy and friendly AI, I mean, the enemies behave very stupid sometimes and other times they behave like geniuses, they NEVER miss a ****ing bullet and they never run out of bullets! WHAT WERE THEY THINKING!! some weapons like the Thompson are useless against normal enemies, you can hit an enemy with 50 bullets and he still alive! what the **** is that Bethesda! give me a ****ing break! The dog is useless most of the time, he can stand near an enemy and do nothing, what kind of help is that? I guess the devs were lazy and they just designed all the enemies the same and gave them infinite bullets, they all behave the same, they shoot thousand of bullets without running out, they take cover like **** and then they watch you and they get killed, they are THAT stupid. The world is poorly designed and the music is recycled from Fallout 3. There's no excuse to do that!
The inventory management is a complete joke, it's very confusing and hard to find simple items and weapons. The ammunition is scarce and that's not acceptable in a FPS game, I mean give me some ****ing bullets to kill enemies, without bullets I can't fight if i can't fight I am done. I go to the shop to buy ammo and weapons and the stupid person is not in the store so I can't buy ammo even when I have money! WHAT THE HELL IS THAT!
I can still name lots of mistakes and issues in this game, poor frame rate, poor graphic details, poor storyline, and terrible AI. All together combined is very sad, because fallout 3 was very good as well as new vegas, this game is a complete joke and not worth buying not even renting. People still supporting this garbage and games are getting worse and worse each year. The upgrading system is very confusing and it's almost impossible to reach a full level in some perks. The voice acting is ridiculous and very boring. The combat system is unfair and stupid sometimes, a giant enemy that can't be killed but he still kill you with 1 single rock he throws at you. Some dogs can take 3 shotgun bullets to the head and still alive and fighting, there's no excuse for so many mistakes and a poorly designed game at the end is all that gamers have. Maybe if they spent more time in improving the game and not wasting time and money in selling those stupid items to the public (nuka cola quantum and pip boy) they made a terrible game in the end, shame on you Bethesda, you screwed up again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Going into this game, I was hoping that Bethesda would take some of the amazing lessons-learned from it's last few games, Fallout 3 and Skyrim, both of which I played for hundreds of hours enjoying their lore and replayability, and improve upon these amazing games.

Unfortunately, I feel like it didn't deliver on these high hopes at all. It's not a bad game by any means, but compared to its predecessors, it has almost the exact same storyline as Fallout 3 and very little of what I loved from Skyrim, which was an amazingly immersive world full with deep and rich lore.

Don't get me wrong, it's not a horrible game and it was certainly entertaining for about 40 hours as I went through the very fun main story arc but after I finished the main quests, I felt very little reason to continue playing. And the main reason for this is that the main story arcs left very little room for completing missions in a variety of ways like the older Fallout games because (SPOILERS) any group I joined made me KILL ALL members of the other factions without the ability to compromise or become a cool double-agent. This left me almost friendless and not caring much for the wasteland after my story was over and the side quests were not compelling enough to keep me around for the several hundred hours that something like Skyrim could.

I've read other reviews where it has been pointed out that combat and the RPG elements have been dumbed down drastically. In my experience, this is true but it did not impact me very negatively. It felt like I had a bit of a customized character but it did indeed feel like I'm no longer playing an RPG and more of a clunky shooter.

My overall verdict for this game is a 7. It's ok, perhaps even above average. I'll probably buy Bethesda's next few games without thinking about it but I will be sorely disheartened if their next Elder Scrolls game takes the same route of essentially copying everything that was done in Skyrim and then dumbing it down a little.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There's love for this game from Bethesda....just...not enough.

Like everyone else I looked forward to this game, and going through a dry spell of decent RPG's, Fallout 4(F4) was the light at the end of the tunnel - although, yes, the game itself has many redeeming qualities, the intense immersive gameplay the previous fallout games possessed show how lackluster F4 is.

    Here's what you'll enjoy:
    - More of the F4 world
    - New base building
    - Interesting new equipment mechanics
    - New and interesting perks
    - More action and fighting focus

    Here's what you may dislike:
    - Dated graphics engine
    - A reliance of mod community to clean up some of the graphics, fix power suit balances, and essentially rely on the community to refine the game.
    - Shallow characters and stilted dialogue
    - More action and fighting focus

You might be wondering why I give it a 6, because honestly it is not a bad game, the controls and FPS component feel more refined, the world appears to be well detailed, the seed community's allowing players to build a town is a great idea, and the atmosphere of F3 is still present. What F4 is missing, imo, is character.

The dialogue is terrible, you obtain equipment far to easily, and have access to the power suit quite early on. The beginning of F4 is painstakingly boring (for me), and I [spoiler] before we really get to enjoy our family or create a bond they are ripped away - I don't know them enough to care....

    Suggestions:
    - Give the player a powersuit but have it break after using it the first time; the player is given time to VALUE the immense power of the suit, so that they work towards it's repair. Create value for players so they see the need to use the suit and how important it is.
    - Spend more time with your family or don't make the story about your family if you can only attribute 10 minutes of gameplay to them. Perhaps make it about your family, but cryogenic damage has caused memory loss, or someone has implanted memories that were never there....give me a reason to care Bethesda....give us a unique story....

I feel my gripe lies heavily in what feels like an unpolished gem, that will only get better once the modding community and DLC for the game comes out. The game is fine, playable, but by no means GOTY quality, or has the same enjoyable traits as F3; but I can't ignore the fact that it does a "good" job, and not a "great" job. So if you like the Fallout world and want more of the same-ish, add it to you list. If you were expecting something different, innovative, and there to create RPG memories, it just didn't draw me in like the previous Fallout's have.

    I hope the review helped.

So many people from around the world have wanted this game for the longest time and I can understand why, Fallout 3 is considered a classic and one of the best games from the last generation but Fallout 4 fails to deliver on all of the hype.

Now, don't get me wrong, it's not a bad game, it's pretty fun and has some nice new integrations, such as the base-building elements, the better followers/companions system and better shooting mechanics. The positives don't outweigh the negatives though, such as the pretty bad framerate drops on console, dropping to 20FPS occasionally when the game gets really hectic, the fairly dated graphics and the obviously aged engine that Bethesda insists is vital to make the game run better. (F*ck the Gamebryo engine)

The story in the game is one of the most lackluster tales Bethesda have ever told and although most people don't come to Fallout for the story, it still should be noted on for people who were expecting something of high production value.

I've clocked around 9 to 10 hours in the game so far and although some of the time has been incredibly fun, such as encountering the new Ghouls for the first time, finding Dogmeat and hearing Codsworth saying 'Batty', my in-game character's name, these were all fun times but the novelty of all of these wore off quickly.

I wish I could say better things about the game but it's just such an average run of the mill game that I can't find many merits to say about the game.

to put it simply, no, no it is not. does that mean its not a great game? no it does not. the moment i got the game I've been playing almost non stop and enjoying it thoroughly but throughout the game I've been noticing the more and more i play it the problems with the story (the game play's fine at least to me)

for me it started the moment my characters child was kidnapped. now SLIGHT SPOILER ALERT your child will be deeply involved with one of the factions in the wasteland . and this moves on from my main point, the point being that in all the other games the mguffin (water chip, G.E.C.K, son) is only tangentially involved with the factions and overarching plot and with the main character themselves. in this game it is deeply involved.

this really damages investment in the character and the world as well as immersion the reason being that the character feels less like your own and more like one scripted by the developers. now in most games this is okay as they are relatively linear and you are very obviously being a character whereas in fallout its massively open and you are supposed to act more like yourself and you can't do that in this game because they already have their own idea of a character in mind and script his reactions and dialog to fit it.

now i'm not going to review gameplay because its enjoyable if you like fallout, and i,m not going to review graphics because for the most part i don't care, anything past oblivion graphics is fine with me so long as its fairly fun

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The announcement left me pregnant with anticipation, the official trailer left me shocked. This looked nothing like the Capital Waste, it was saturated with color, breathing and living, and touched on that curious ‘before the war’ which I had always imagined. I didn’t know how I felt, like trying a new dish at one’s favorite restaurant; but I did know regardless of my reaction to that ad (of which was negative at first), I would be that person standing in line for the midnight release. And I was, no thanks to Best Buy’s poor customer service, XBOX one in one heavy hand, and the wrapped cover to this adventure in the other.
Where to start? Is it worth it, most definitely; though I can’t imagine a Fallout game from here forward ever not being at least worth it. But it was not without its flaws, and let me tell you firsthand, those flaws were not few, and the list only continued to grow into a somewhat disappointing conclusion.
After tangling with setting-up this console and downloading the game (I am a technology peasant), and confused but entertained by that starting “S.P.E.C.I.A.L.” presentation, this game opened up into perhaps the most dramatic, scene setting intro I have ever seen (with the nice included touch of real people, no doubt modeled off of the Halo franchise’s earlier incorporation). I was shocked, and as soon as the actual gameplay started I was faced (literally and figuratively) with what the commercial had demonstrated. It was amazing, and this pre-war world was fascinating, if only for the ten whole minutes lasts.
And here’s where my quarrels start, and at that start to pile up (spoilers ahead, and I played as a male).
Why was my wife shot? For resisting? Yeah that’s hard to swallow, dramatic I figure, but one could have just has easily punched her or forced the baby from her hands. Something that would make much more sense (going into the story later) when the Institute claimed they wanted to preserve a ‘backup’ with similar biological characteristics to ‘Shaun’ (uncanny name by the way). By the way, why does the ‘sole survivor’ describe his/her ‘missing child’ in the waste as ‘Shaun?’ Obviously no-one would recognize that name, least of which the baby which was taken. But alright.
So I get out of the cryogenic storage (love the environment and exit sequence by the way) and am shocked to hear that I had been in there for two hundred years. Then that was it. This was the ONLY instance of his shock in the entire game. After that, he’s just a pro. Yeah this is the wasteland and he knows it like the back of his hand. Monstrously huge animals, insects and ‘Super Mutants,” no shock here. Moving on.
That first quest with the minute men, horribly confusing at first. Just some random voice screaming from somewhere to grab some unknown laser rifle (which I couldn’t find by the way), pleading for help. So I help him, quite effectively at that (which makes sense since I was in the military), but their big ‘plan’ was to get a cool sounding fusion core and so on. Okay, two things. Why is their mechanic absolutely jacked (what is this Gears of War?) and yet nonetheless cowardly. Additionally, if they had been camped out there for several days, why couldn’t anyone get this from the basement? Yeah it was stuck behind a novice lock that requires no skill, but in any case this is a very porous mini-plot. And this trend continued in almost every major quest in the game (so I will only mention a couple going forward).
So taking a pause from this, why was I totally immersed from the start of the game? Why was there no transition period into crafting and settlements? Why did armor (at least that which would be effective) only come in pieces? At first I thought the designers were trying to ease me into a game which had the option of multiple pieces (vs. harder to get single sets) but then I realized, really the single-set armor wear was being phased out… which I prefer to the tacky, to frequent, difficult to differentiate without first looting (and subsequently hard to keep track of, and unpleasant to look at in inventory) armor pieces. This is another thing… why does every single piece and every single weapon have a dozen different variations; and from the start too?! I LOVE the idea of weapon modification, but it should not dropped with said mods, this is too complicated and terribly challenging to keep track of, and instead the mod skill should be assumed as taken up (as is already almost entirely necessary for a competitive character). Further, this should not be necessary for early ‘pipe’ weapons, those should only have one ‘base form,’ (legendary aside) as they are already going to be phased out by the time the player functionally knows how to mod (at that point better weapons, and by the way it should be a three level mod system, the fourth level [only obtainable at level 39] should be removed and incorporated into third).
Also, and real briefly for armor mods... Continued

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a continued review (from mabusaif), and I will skip forward in order to prioritize… though the largest repeating issues I addressed: the lack of dynamism in characters, dialogue, game-play and plot.
So as for the main story... I wrote earlier that I have only just finished my first gameplay (though all gameplays end the same). I sided with the Institute: the shadowy place every player passes through and so hopefully everyone can relate to its porous nature. It wasn’t the strange leap of faith one had to take in the Chemed up old lady (Mama Murphy) who could see into the future in the start, it wasn’t that the main detective helping you, a synth, never offered a clear reason as to why he was not reclaimed, or that following the freedom trail (or even finding where it started, because it didn’t show on the map) was difficult and confusing, it’s just that the whole tale was farfetched to the point of fairy tale, and hard to swallow. I had to kill a man who himself turns out to be over a hundred years old, live through his memory (where by the way it describes seeing my ten year old son in Diamond City as a ‘recent memory.’), find a scientist self-made Super Mutant (with no good explanation as to why a courser never pursued him, because they are after all immune to radiation) to get a schematic that a nobody-mechanic could make into a transportation device (What?!) to get into an underground place where I find my son (who treats me like an experiment and toys with me from the start), who by the way is unguarded, trusting and glad to meet me despite not helping even in the slightest along the way, oh and by the way he’s sixty years of age (something I had figured would be the case from the start, because I was put into cryo and I constantly wondered about the lack of consideration for time lapse, but that aside) and on top of it he is the leader of this shadowy organization! The audacity of this story to presume so many variables as ‘leaps of faith.’ And the unpatched things along the way, unbelievable! The Railroad is displayed as some weak hidden underground organization, but then at Bunker Hill has masses of tough-well armed foot soldiers. The Brotherhood who’s quest-line is tasteless and who’s only presence in the waste is constantly getting vertibirds shot down. The Minutemen who suddenly have a strong following (in defense of the one scientist) some way into the Institute’s main quest-line. The Institute which is so cautious and self-reliant but has near complete dependence on a single man (well two if you count the sole survivor). All these matters could have easily been smoothed out or over, and I begin to question whether anyone’s input was ever gained on the final product before its release. For example Diamond City radio, did anyone ever listen to it for hours (before finishing the confidence quest line) to hear how absolutely unpleasant it is to listen to Tyler’s announcements day in and out. Was that really worth the one side quest, which by the way is unlikely to accidentally stumble upon? Did anyone consider that most of the players of this game would still be familiar without the Fallout 3 playlist, and that creating a mix primarily composed of Fallout 3 songs and cliché rocket, radiation and fallout songs was not up to par with the incredible model the Fallout 3 playlist set up?
Wasted opportunities scattered throughout this wasteland of a Commonwealth, and which literally wasted what could have been an otherwise flawlessly integrative wasteland experience. While enjoyable, nonetheless, it was not without its flaws. I am simply saying that these could have easily been rectified; and that in future development, the developers should look to similar blogs, bloggers, and fans for advice on the game’s development. Because these opinions are not isolated, and they are undoubtedly reflective of greater trends (I for instance have received similar reactions from a whole host of friends, at least a dozen, both immediately and over the course of their gameplay). I am already eager to see what Bethesda does with the for-coming expansions, which have historically been great and less prone to porous plots due to their brevity. And like any other fan, I am already ready for the next game in the series, but likewise I’m ready to stop playing this one already. And if this would have grabbed me by the throat, or hit me on the head like a swatter, I wouldn’t be so quickly willing to walk away from my character. While war never changes, I hope the capacity of these game designers to seek and respond to input does. Because the story and experience equally matter, and anyone who has ever played Fallout through knows that the term ‘game’ does no justice to the lore and lure it embodies. I am here, as are the scores of my peers… and while the endurance of Fallout is unquestioned, as Bethesda continues to design it with strength, the perception of players merits thought.

The problem with 3rdIt was hard for me to rate this game because I was stuck between a 7 and 8. To state it up front I am not a huge fan of 1st person RPG games so at first I wasn't to thrilled but until I found out you can play the game in 3rd person. The problem with 3rd person is you quickly realize how it was put in as an after thought rather than an alternative way to play the game. Trying to pick items up and open certain drawers in 3rd person is extremely frustrating. In addition aiming your gun in 3rd person is extremely clunky. I found my self going between 3rd and 1st person very often just to get certain tasks accomplished.

Now to get into the actual overall game. I very much liked and enjoyed the Vats system especially since I enjoyed using pistols throughout the entire campaign. It added a layer of strategy to the more than regular gun battles you do throughout the game. The game's PIPBOY interface menu left a lot to be desired it was very clunky to navigate and get used to. Navigating the games menu to get to different categories equipping gear was all very clunky and took time to get used to. The PIPBOY map was another thing that left a lot to be desired. This leads me to inventory management which is a nightmare in this game. Managing all your inventory armors, weapons, junk, and so forth. Is very tedious I found myself many times accidently depositing currently equipped armor and weapons into storage and then having to go through storage to find the weapons that I was using. Overall inventory and game menus really lacked a lot of refinement and seemed rushed.

The game world left a lot to be desired also character and NPC interactions were bland and boring. Conversation choices really had no affect on your game play / story. The world seems very lifeless enemy interactions were predictable. Enemy variety felt lacking you go from fighting Ghouls, Mutants, Synths, and Raiders over and over. And becomes very mundane and boring. There are no exciting boss battles or "OH NO!" moments. The only time anything stuck in my head was the Witchcraft museum and the lake Swan. Only moments were I said to my self "Oh Damn! Run". There is a severe lack of boss fights in this game. You get thrown in right from the start and have to fight one of the toughest creatures in the game but after that everything else seems just go through and kill XYZ.

The games story also is very convoluted with no sense of urgency overall. Half way through the game I didn't even remember what my main objective would be. Is it taking down the institute for the greater good of the commonwealth or hunting down my son's kidnapper / wife's killer. It is easy to get side tracked from the main plot and story line and there really isn't anything that brings you back to say "Hey don't forget some one took your son and kidnapped your wife!". I did towards the end of the game find myself getting more involved in the actual story as I got closer and closer to beating the game.

Now what really did keep me playing the game was my OCD of completionism. Finding every magazine, bobblehead, weapon, and armor.... This is where I have to give the game the low rating and is what made this part less than a 7 for me maybe more of a 5. It's not until you try to go through and find everything that you start getting into the bugs affecting this game. The benevolent leader trophy has the be the most annoying thing since it makes no sense and provides no guidance. I was forced to build 5-6 hospitals for a village for 15 people just so I could get people in my settlement happy. I know this isn't how Bethesda intended this trophy / achievement to work. Literally building a house with 20+ beds just to keep the happiness up. Whether this I how its meant to be or a bug this really takes away from playing the game how you want it to be played. The other part that annoyed me then and now is the Vault 75 bobblehead doll which is bugged. The problem here is that now that the NPC won't spawn there is no way to get him to respawn or even to have the whole area reset / respawn. I am force to have to start over the game from the beginning which I refuse to do.

This game has a lot of ups and downs but it was a fun experience for me which I enjoyed going through once and would most likely not go back and play it over again from the beginning. The bugs is really what kept me from giving this game an 8.

Fallout 4: a game that came, for me, with mixed emotions. After playing for an hour, I felt unfulfilled. While I do understand that this is a survival game that leaves much to do for the player, I was having trouble getting a footing. In Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas, the start of the game was very accommodating. Fallout 3 was among the easiest, with Megaton being a very good "base" of sorts. However, in Fallout 4, the start is more challenging. One of the very first missions requires you to fight through a building of raiders, fight them once from the roof, then descend to the ground to duel with a Deathclaw. You are given power armor and a minigun, some will find that fighting through the aforementioned raiders will deplete ammo quickly.

However, after this "hit the ground running" introduction, the game begins to pick up speed. While some may find the settlement mission(s) for the Minutemen boring, I find it an interesting mechanic that shapes the game. Fallout has been a series built around moving. The Lone Wanderer roams D.C. to find his father. The Courier journeys the Mojave to find his attacker. However, the Sole Survivor now has the choice to stay at home or roam. It's a creative way to shape this game.

Now, on to the factions. The Railroad are whiny, the Brotherhood are old, and the Institute are borderline cult-like. But the Minutemen are different. They are the last light for a decaying world. The Commonwealth is dangerous, and if I were to pick the new government, the Minutemen would be an obvious choice. They are guided by morality and want the best for all creatures, wether robotic or human.

Of course, most of the game was very good, exceptional really. The story was decent. I didn't feel there was much room to divulge from the main storyline. It felt on track, with a bit of freedom in small, uneven pockets. The graphics, I felt, aren't what they could be for next-gen consoles. While it was colorful, it felt plastic. Most of the companions weren't worth bringing along. I got over encumbered too quickly and found myself dropping too many items.

The game was okay. I liked 40% of it. The other 60%, I would have done differently. It looked like Fallout. It smelled like Fallout. But it wasn't Fallout. It was a post-apocalyptic shooter with elements of GTA, CoD, and the bad parts of Skyrim.

Let me start by saying that everyone who gave this game between 0-3 is ridiculous. It held my attention for a decent amount of time, but it was not on the level of Skyrim or Fallout 3 for me. I don't know if I missed something, but I barely found any engaging side quests!! Not even with the factions. It felt ridiculously repetitive. The beauty of these games for me is not necessarily the main quest, but the days upon days you can spend exploring the world and helping/ screwing over its characters. In this game, it felt like there was absolutely no point. All anyone would have me do is go clear some random camp/factory.

And nothing that I cleared out would stay clear!!!! Why travel the map clearing anything if you're just going to be sent to the same spot and do the same thing?!

Combat was fine, graphics were not incredible, but great graphics don't make a great game. Engaging content makes a game great, and that is what Fallout 4 does not have.

Fallout 4 managed to catch my attention but only a small way into the game. I started with low expectations hoping I would be surprised once it starts and well it hits common ground fast. That's good for me. I believe that if you're making a sequel you should keep the good mechanics of its predecessor and build upon them. After finishing the first major story quest an elderly woman mentions the words "Diamond City" to me so I brush it off as the location I will eventually get to by following the main quest line. Five hours and a bunch of quests later something hits me: that vague hint was the main quest wasn't it... The game had me believe that for the past five hours I was doing repetitive familiar quests over and over again with the hope of progressing the game's some what at this point unknown plot. The reason why this annoyed me was due to the previous entries making clear what was a main quest and what wasn't. With the full intention of finding out what the hell I should do I journeyed to Diamond City to find some plot. My instincts were right and from that point onwards the plot never slows down again. This is unfortunate as the tone and general urgent feel of each main quest I began to ignore the side quests. In the end the plot was okay but nothing spectacular. They try to pull of too many plot twists towards the end that make earlier plot points seem pointless to have.

Side quests...oh boy the side quests. This game boasts at how much you can do and how alive the world is as each NPC has their own little story you can get involved with. Unfortunately the creative team must have only worked on the main quests as around 75% of the side quests are rinse and repeat the same. I especially find the Minute Men almost pointless to help if it wasn't for the big faction war Fallout games have at the end of them. The new mechanics are mainly for the Minute Men quests which I got bored of fast so they were pointless for me. What made this worse was the fact that other mechanics were taken out making this seem like a waist of time. Things that helped so much like the repair mechanic have been removed and instead I have 7 10mm guns in my inventory taking up space. Making matters worse Fallout's currency becomes pointless in this. I don't remember one time I had to buy anything in the game because everyone kept handing me crap. The power armour is another complaint of mine as I only had to use it twice during mandatory points I needed them: 1. when I got it 2. when I walked into the Green Sea (covered in radiation).
Besides from this I completely abandoned it with power cores building in my inventory and no desire to use them.

NPCs in this game are a joy to talk to with the voice acting and AI being on point for the most of it (even though I mainly use them as body shields). Fan and personal favourite Piper has been a fun companion and rivals Serena of Skyrim and Veronica of New Vegas. Didn't like the single companion capability when previous entries had around 3 companions at a time.

Rounding it all off with the graphics and scenery: the graphics are beautiful but at times seem waisted on a forgettable bland and mix of the settings from Fallout 3 and New Vegas. You will have the occasional moment where you want to just stop and stare but with those moments far between I never bothered to remember most of the locations. A highlight for me was the Brotherhood's airship appearing

I have played MMORPGs (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games), MOBAs, (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena), First person shooters, platformers, and in general consider myself to be a jack of all trades when it comes to video games. My review will be divided into 5 separate sections that i believe to be important to the gaming experience.

    LEGACY:
This is somewhat of a controversial topic when it comes to fans of the Fallout series. Some of us think that this game is an amazing fifth game in the series that has throwbacks to older games with some improvements to old issues. Others will tell you that the game has become a first person SIMS in a post apocalyptic environment. In my opinion there is some truth in both of these arguments but what many people fail to realize is that after the tutorial stage of the game, everything is up to the player. If you're the type of player who wants to spend time setting up settlements then you can, but if you would rather spend time cleansing the wastes of raiders then that's also up to you. However I dearly miss the voice options from the previous games.

    SETTLEMENT FEATURES:
This is a feature that i personally really dislike and i feel that it was given too much attention in this installment of the series. While you aren't forced to indulge in the Minuetmen's campaign to colonize the wastelands, it definitely feels forced. The entire crafting system has a very Minecraft-esque feel to it. I was never personally big on the franchise but I can see the appeal.

    BASE GAME AND ADDONS:
I have seen the argument quite a lot with people saying ''Oh there was planned DLC? That means that it's an unfinished game." I find this to be a very ignorant perspective and people don't seem to realize that it is much better to release a game and then to continue to add new and interesting content to it, then it is to release one game and cram as many things into it as you can. I like the option that if you aren't attracted to the idea of an addon that you aren't required to buy it.

    STORY:
I am going to attempt this section with no spoilers in it so bear with the vagueness. Bethesda has really implemented a vast story and while sadly they have removed any sense of choices, the story itself is nice. They added depth to the robo-life that was already in the game and while creating new factions, also brought back some old ones. I very much miss the game defining choices that used to come in Fallout games, but this game has taken a very different route than previous installments so these changes are understandable.

    PERK SYSTEM:
This is one of the highlights in my mind of this game compared to the previous games. The way that all your skills are built off of others and the whole thing being visualized in the way that it is, is a huge plus. This isn't a main part of the game however the skills themselves are. While many are the same from older games they all have a unique touch to them. This was absolutely my favorite feature from this game.

    CONCLUSION:
Overall this game will be getting a 6 from me, if Bethesda had changed a few elements and released this as a standalone game instead of slapping the "Fallout brand" onto it I think the game would have gotten higher ratings. Since the removal of all the best voice lines and the ability to impact your story with the choices you make, this really stopped being an RPG and became a shooter with a story line. I am very sad to see Bethesda doing this to the game series i used to know and love.

    Pros:
+ Finally, the gunplay is up to scratch in a Fallout game.
+ Looks AMAZING (for a Fallout game, at least...).
    + Rich wasteland that isn't completely brown (F: NV) or green/grey (F3).
+ On the surface, there's a wide variety of interesting side-quests (few genuinely fantastic ones though).
+ Good crafting mechanics (weapons and armour).
+ It's more Fallout, and most importantly - it, for the most part, FEELS like a Fallout game.

    Cons:
    - Terrible story, full of plot holes. It irritates the hell out of me that player choice is so limited in the story
    - God awful DLC: I'm never buying a season pass again. Only 2 "story" DLCs?! 1 of which was awful (Nuka-World). Seriously, DO NOT BUY THE DLC - even "Far Harbor", is pretty flawed
    - I don't buy a Fallout game to get a settlement builder/simulator.
    - Lack of different ammo types and craftable ammo like in New Vegas.
    - Invincible NPCs (leads, again, to a lack of player choice).
    - Graphics, compared to any other game released at around the same time (see The Witcher 3), are poor.
    - Bugs and crashes up the wazoo (typical Bethesda - SAD).
    - Even though the gunplay is "good" for a fallout game, it is still lacking when compared to other first person shooters (or even other 3rd person shooters).
    - Voiced character completely kills role-playing, as does the limited (and often IDENTICAL) dialogue options. Often they lack any consequential results from any of your "choices".
    - Irritating companions. Especially **** PRESTON.

TL;DR - feels like a cash grab. Good, not great, and I'm annoyed at myself for spending so much time in it.

Anyway. Gameplay is a definite improvement over previous games, more fluid and less blocky. That said, VATS still takes front and center to the point of repetition and quickly becomes just as stale as it was in previous installments. The best addition is the use of grenades without being forced to manually equip them; makes clearing a room much more fun.

Main Story wise, it's good. The basic plot gives you just enough emotional connection to keep chugging along, though the killer is in the details (Some holotapes and character dialogue are particularly well done). Probably the first time Bethesda had taken me on a feels trip, even if a short one. That said, it's spectacularly short and fairly linear. If you're looking for the branching campaigns like Fallout New Vegas, you're sure to be disappointed. Factions are inferred rather than outright stated and have minimal bearing on the story until the last 5 hours or so of gameplay.

Side quests. Non. **** Existent. Compared to any other Bethesda game, the world feeling lacking in the tinier stories that would normally suck up your time in the wasteland. Their reliance on 'Radiant Quests' (A la Skyrim) quickly becomes a boring grind and by the 40 hour mark you'll find that you're down to skin and bones when looking for a diversion from the main questline.

Companions. Best done by Bethesda yet. Well written and voice acted. Only downside is the 'affection system' needed to progress their story line requires a metric **** of work to get going (Trust me, those 'Radiant Quests' quickly become your only option of furthering your relationship).

Overall polish of game? It's **** Bethesda. Within 2 hours I found myself glitched out of a quest line and when I went to start a new game on a second character I quickly ran into a game-breaking bug that has currently caused me to shelve the game for the time being. Expected but still frustrating.

Additional notes: Nerfing power armor was definitely a poor choice and essentially renders it useless until end game when you actually have the resources to take it out and about. And, Though I do like the new segmented armor system, the lack of different styles and armor types makes customizing your character more than a bit dry. Crafting system is a big plus, and you'll want to dedicate yourself to learning it's ins and outs to get the most out of your gear.

All in all. Average. A decent game but far too hyped. It's like eating salad and only salad for dinner. It's food, it'll sustain you, but it won't fill you up and leave you satisfied. And now I'll end this review with words that curdle my own blood... "Maybe the patches and DLC will fix it".

    SPOILER ABOUT STORY TO FOLLOW

The story is remodeled version of Fallout 3. Instead of lost father it is a lost son.
In the end you can either kill the son or aid him in his death bed.

Basically they re-used the old Fallout 3 story that was discarded for the current Fallout 3 story.
This in my opinion was a mistake. There are a lot of different motivations or reasons how the story could have proceed yet Bethesda re-used the same chase family member in post apocalypse.

The game also is typical Bethesda game containing a lot of bugs that Bethesda will "hopefully" fix in future or they expect people to fix them self. Their DIY- game model is popular among modders but for console players it is a bane.

-Main story is actually good. The main story from my experience is better than the side quests which historically (from what I hear) has not been the case.

    Cons:
-BUGS!! So much bugs. Frame rate stutters during action. Once I tried to do a running jump during a gun fight and I bugged out and went sideways. Aiming gets reaaal frustrating because of this.
-No auto-aim correction on a console fps. I suppose it's because they have vats. You can use vats to aim at a person, exit vats, and then start shooting but it's not as good as an auto-aim correction.
-This is just my opinion but I don't find this world very fun to explore. Oh, there's a building? I wonder what's in it. Probably a bunch of enemies just like every other building in the game!

Conclusion: It's not great. It's not changing the landscape of video games like people, perhaps wrongfully, thought it would. It's just a good game. Honestly if the bugs were gone and there was an auto-aim correction I would probably give this game an 8/9. Or if I played it on the PC I would have probably gave this game an 8/9. Quests and the fallout world in general keep you well immersed. Random encounters, a compelling storyline, fun side quests, and unique but subtle ways to approach missions really pull the player into this game.

However, some serious issues have to be mentioned. These issues stop the game from getting a 10/10 or 9/10 because its more than what we should expect from such a huge game in 2015. Especially since its been close to 7 years since the last fall out. Shocking to hear some critic reviews online saying this is a perfect game that has been well polished, because that simply isnt true. Yes i think the game is a ton of fun and worth playing, but there are some glaring issues which stand out which make it feel like a PS3 game rather than next gen. Below, is a list of the good and bad.

    1. AI is really stupid. Just choose a good choke point, fire and watch them call come running to you to get mowed down.
    2. Combat feels a but clunky, especially so for melee combat.
    3. Voice acting for super mutants could have been done better. Sounds contrived.
    4. Characters speak over each other, so you some times miss out on conversations.
    5. You have to stand directly opposite a character to hear them properly. Especially annoying if your on a mission with a story character and you cant hear their story because you are following them. This issue is just inexcusable.
    6. Building settlements function is a little frustrating. Not much direction on how to do it, so you have to resort to google or trial and error.
    7. Graphics arent bad, but make it as if your playing fallout 3.5 rather than fallout 4.

    The good:

    1. Compelling storyline.
    2. Super Immersive environment which is obvious a lot of thought has gone into.
    3. Finally picking up junk matters because junk can be broken down into special components required for crafting.
    4. A unique and vast crafting system which is complimented by the environment and your scavenging kills which for once doesnt feel over tedious.
    5. Getting power armour early in the game, and the ability to craft unique mods for it. Left me tweaking it whenever i could, but not being able to use the OP item all the time since you need special fusion cores to run it. Tweaking it felt like owning a classic car which you kinda kept in the garage only to use on special occasions.
    6. The deep and interesting lore, characters, environment, theme of the fallout world, which really makes you feel part of the game.
    7. The random encounters with varied characters and locations.
    8. The vast amount of unique side quests available. The map may not be the largest in the gaming world, but it feels as if every corner of every location has a story and side quests are fun enough to keep me side tracked.
    9. A story line that doesnt care too much about your character level. (I.e. doing too many side quests and being OP for early quests)
    10. Unique way to approach some missions. You can be a strong character and bust in killing everything, or have you might come across a robot on the mission and reprogram it to do the killing for you. I love how there are those kinda surprises placed in missions.
    11. The character stats and wide variety of perks available make for interesting character builds depending on how you want to play. Something about it makes it feel that character development stays true to RPGs of the past.

I dunno know what's the fuzz about, why all you people are raging like hell. Maybe you are abit overhyped or something? I think the game is great, sure i can agree that there's alot of flaws but the core of the fun gameplay and exploration is still there.

I've been reading some reviews before i decided to buy it and i'll say it to you guys out there too:
You should decide on your own if you wanna buy/rent the game and not trust these guys over here.
Mostly it's overhyped kids who got let down or it's overhyped fanboys who scores 10 over anything so you cant basically trust anyone here on metacritic lol. I'll share my opinion:

Story: It's a bit cheesy, coming from Bethesda - i wouldnt expect this. I just get this EA Bioware a'la Dragon Age feeling from it. I actually cringed in the start when i started the game cause some of the lines were abit embarrassing coming from this company. The start of the game feels abit rushed, i didnt have time to do anything until everything happend. I feel that they could been more patient with everything there.
The story works, but it's nothing special.

Graphics: Im playing on PS4 and yes, it isnt great. It isnt. But it depends on yourself, do you feel that graphics > gameplay + content? I dont. For me, the graphics works but arent special.
I wouldnt say that it's like Skyrim, but its more like The Last of Us remastered(without the 60fps lol).
Im satisfied on it overall, that's not important for me.
For me, Bethesda always been content over graphics and this arent any big news.
They always deliver bad graphics in my opinion.

Gameplay: This is where the game shines, guns sounds majestic, music is overall top notch. (srsly good music in this game, gives me the shivers) VAT system works fine and companions is overall fun to hang with and explore their own world too. Melee is abit boring, i didnt find myself actually interested in it, it works but it's kinda "meh". Most enemies has ranged weapons so it feels kinda useless.

And yes, the speech dialogue is pretty bad. For me, it isnt gamechanging, just boring tbh. It feels dumbed-down and i agree with most of the people here. That's a down part.
The UI of the menu is TERRIBLE. My god. I dont wanna complain but it's so freaking small and unpractical that i just gets frustratred everytime i open the Pip-boy. I have a big widescreen TV and still having problem with that. (They should've just made the menu full screen when you use the pipboy.)

Character progress: I got abit dissapointed here. Everything you do in this game is dosent feel like it's important. I got abit sad that you cant actually level up "Chemistry" or "Cooking". You just starts with knowing every cooked meal and potions. So it's not like you can learn recipes or anything like that.
That was a bad choice since i like to progress and work my way up to side-professions.

Level Perk: It was fine, abit boring but i found myself having several stuff useful. I would love to actually have points to spend on S.P.E.C.I.A.L instead of just getting auto-lvled. (*cough* Diablo 3 *cough*)

Companions can be abit annoying sometimes, aggroing people when im trying to avoid combat.

Other then that, im satisfied with the game. It has bugs and flaws indeed, i wont disagree with some of the negative reviews here - But for me, the content in this game lifts everything up so much that i dont care actually. I found myself more interested in Boston and sidequests then actually doing the main quest.

The world is really fun to explore and for me, this is the kind of a game that gets you lost for several hours and you havent even done the first main quest. That's the part i love about Bethesda's game.
I had fun the whole time and when the bugs/glitches came, i just laughed about it.

If your having doubts about this game, i recommend that you atleast rent it, or buy it and return it within 30 days. Either way if your buying it or not, i think you should try it on your own before reading all this ranging/praising fanboys.

TL;DR: The game is fine, GOTY? I doubt. But it's a Bethesda game with ALOT of exploration and fun gameplay.
Bugs and Glitches? Bad Graphics? yes. It all depends on what you feel is most important.
Buy/rent the game and decide for yourself if you wanna buy it for full price or not. This place is filled with fanboys or raging kids. It's either a 10 or a 0. Grow up people.

    For me, it's a weak 9.

The new game play additions were good ideas in concept, but poor in execution. This is probably because what they introduced clashes horribly with the game play that made Fallouts 3 and New Vegas masterpieces. For example, you now have the ability to aim down the sights of your gun. I can understand why Bethesda would choose to do this (for the purpose of modernizing the franchise), but it negates the need for V.A.T.S. Throughout the main campaign, especially near the beginning, simply aiming down the barrel of your gun is more accurate than using V.A.T.S. I find this to be a disservice to avid Fallout fans because the cutting edge game play that defined the last gen Fallout games is being thrown out and replaced with CoD controls. But this is only where the problems begin. Somehow, the dialogue in this game is substantially worse than Fallout 3. I mean this in an objective way, the dialogue seems more robotic and less-natural. It is only made worse by the substandard performances of the voice actors and the awful lip sync. To be fair, the voice acting in the previous two Fallouts was nothing to gawk at, but the fact that the dialogue is better nearly makes up for this. I also don't like how there are voice overs for the protagonist. The decision to include verbal dialogue ruined the illusion that I was the lone wanderer in the wasteland. There is a reason why Link has no dialogue in the Legend of Zelda. There is also a new running mechanic in the game. Like aiming down the sights, this was a nice idea in concept, but done badly. The newfound ability to run make traversing the wasteland quicker and less tedious. However, running diminishes your AP levels faster than you can say "Fallout 4 is a disappointment!" Normally this isn't an issue, but it is kind of one in combat. Imagine your running around the battlefield, trying to avoid getting shot and you see an enemy. Instinctually, you slow down time with V.A.T.S., and attempt to gun down your enemy. There's just one problem; you can't. You don't have enough AP because you were just sprinting around. Your only choice now is to exit V.A.T.S. and get shot in the face. Oh, but I can hear the naysayers now. "This isn't a problem because you don't use V.A.T.S.!" Well, I did say kind of an issue. Finally, I have mixed feelings regarding the dog. Now don't get me wrong, I love dogs, but I don't believe having a dog as a companion in a Fallout game is a good idea because it detracts from the lonely, helpless feeling the Fallout games are famous for. Like I remember when I first exited vault 101 in Fallout 3. My initial reaction was "wow, the world kind of sucks now," but as I ventured forth into the waste land I felt dreaded, alone, and a little uncomfortable. And this is one of Fallout 3's greatest strengths; tone. But in Fallout 4, you leave vault 111 and immediately get a dog, a companion, a character that rids the narrative of any sense of isolation. Now this is not to say that companionship in games is bad, because it isn't. Games like The Last of Us and Bioshock Infinite have proven this, but neither of those games are Fallout. To conclude, Fallout 4 is very much the Skyward Sword of the Fallout franchise; it's good in it's own right, but a terrible entry in their respective series'. Personally, I believe everyone would enjoy this game loads more if they pretended it were a new IP, Borderlands, or something like that. But at the same time, no player should have to do that to enjoy a game, which is why I'm giving this game a 7/10 along with every other reason I explained in this review.

Would have been an 8 or 9, but the sub par graphics combined with some horrific loading times and watered down npc conversations = 6.

The building aspect while entertaining for an hour or so, is too buggy, feels rushed and shoehorned into the game. It also takes far too long to grind out scrap to build a mega base.. It should be fun not a chore.

I have been a fan of the Fallout series since the release of the first game. So I had very high expectations going in. Did it deliver? For the most part. FO4 is as good as I had hoped it would be, however, it has some glaring flaws.

    The negative:
    - First and foremost, the game engine. It is clearly past its prime and we've seen it far too much now. Don't get me wrong Bethesda did try to spice things up a bit and did the best they could with it. It's still a fun game engine. Just far, far too familiar at this point.
    - Diverse dialogue, or lack thereof. The dialogue wheel is really far too basic and is mostly filled with different ways of saying the same thing. It kinda limits the immersion at times and feels almost lazy.
    - The settlement system. While this was a good idea, aside from trophies and the few related story missions, it serves little purpose and is really nothing more than a distraction. It would have been nice if they had made it so you could completely clear settlements of all debris (I know there is a mod on PC that allows this.) Limited landscaping might have been nice too. All in all this feature felt a bit incomplete. With some tweaking it could be some thing great.
    - Ending(s.) Where are they? Every Fallout game's epilogue gave you a breakdown of what happen to all the key areas/factions, kinda making you feel your actions made a difference. FO4 has kinda done the ME3 ending thing. A few slight variations of the same thing. Kinda lazy when you have just spent +100 hours on the game.
    - Soundtrack. It's mostly the exact same music from the previous FO games. The 50s did produce more than ten songs you know. Also hard to believe that no one in the wasteland is composing original work.
    - Character models. Bethesda, yo people is uglee. Seriously, it's the PS4 yet the people look very plasticee.
    - Recycled background banter from unnamed NPC fluff characters. OMG, they keep repeating the same dialogue over and over. It is so irritating. Same goes for banter from raiders. Funny how all these different raiders in different locations have the exact conversations.
    - Sex and nudity. Seriously, FO4 was rated M in the US and 18 in the UK. There is plenty of violence, language and drug use. Yet for whatever reason everyone in the apocalyptical wasteland is chaste as an after school special. Take a page from the Witcher games, if you're going to make a game for adults, then treat them like adults. FONV at least tried in this regard. It still amazes me that this puritanical approach still exists in this day and age.

    The positive:
+ The Commonwealth. At first glance it come across as small. But you quickly notice that it is overflowing with locations.
+ Boston and the rest of the Commonwealth is beautiful. When compared to FO3 and FONV, FO4 is just visually stunning and so much more attention to detail. Every location feels like it was given a personal touch.
+ Quests galore. There is just so, so much to do in this game. A ton of well written content. I do feel that the main quest lines do get pushed to the side to easily and could have been given a bit more of a sense of urgency, but this is not a negative thing, just a result of the overabundance of side content.
+ Companions. So many to choose from, and they're all pretty fun to play with. A shame the aggression setting from NV is no longer there. Companions do make it a little hard to play a stealthy approach. But once you have the best gear, that approach kinda gets redundant.
+ Crafting. The weapon crafting system is awesome.A shame that armor crafting didn't really get as much variety.
+ Story. Just a great story with a ton of new lore to keep things interesting.
+ Voice acting. Just fantastic all around from all involved.

    Overall:
For all my gripes, I still loved the game. With a bit more polish and effort Bethesda could make something far greater than they already have.

Short version: If you like Fallout let's face it you already bought this and are likely enjoying it but otherwise skip it and grab Metal Gear or Witcher if you're a fan of open world games.

I've played this for a few weeks now and feel that I will more than get my money's worth in terms of entertainment value. Although the main story line feels quite short there a numerous side quests and, what I think, is a great base building system. That's not to say there are not numerous things I found quite frustrating.

Graphics: I agree that this game is ugly. There are mods for Fallout 3 that make it look so much nicer than Fallout 4. However, that isn't what bothers me graphics wise (I really don't mind ugly if it works well and is fast). What annoyed me more were the bugs. Lots of times the textures didn't load. Walking into Diamond city for the first time and seeing it bright pink takes something away from the game for me. Also the clipping is terrible. I had to stop using Dogmeat just because having him clipped into a staircase grated away at me.

Sound: I didn't like the voice acting of the male protagonist - except when he is sarcastic. Though I did like many of the other characters - such as Nick. Sound effects, music and radio were all great. Loved the diamond city play list and the DJ is much less annoying than Three Dog.

Gameplay: I am clearly in a minatory but I didn't mind the new speech options. The sarcastic button is great. Once again the bugs really ruined a lot of this for me. It is not that any of them are game breaking but together it is just a pain. For example numerous times I found elevators to just hang for 10-15 seconds or following NPCs out of doors always seemed troublesome. Not sure about other versions but on the PS4 I hate the load times. I found myself unwilling to explore as much because entering a tiny house, taking their stuff, and leaving exposed me to 40 seconds of loading. I guess Dimond City is the best (or worst) example of this. Each little building, shop, etc taking ages to load. The base building I have really enjoyed. I have spent hours just looking for that extra bit of oil or some copper to build X, Y and Z. It isn't really an intuitive system but it forced me to play around more than I might have otherwise. Perhaps an optional tutorial might have been nice but YouTube saved me there.

Story: I don't like it. I liked it more than a many open world games but I think it lacks the shine of the Fallout 1/2 era and even feels like a step back from Fallout 3/NV era. Although an effort was made to humanise the two more authoritarian factions I still think it missed an opportunity to show the moral complexities of a destroyed world that has recently been done so well in The Last of Us.

Summary: My first PS4 open world game was Dragon Age. I don't think Fallout 4 is as polished as that but I very much prefer the setting in Fallout 4. I got a good deal with fallout in terms of money vs game play time but am still upset that it still feels like a beta version of what will be a great game if it was in development for 6 more months.

The good features of the game imo are weapons and clothes, tons to use and the perk system is also very good. Combat system is ok, but the game lacks of diferent types of enemies. The companions are a cool adition to the game, i had fun with some of them and each one have a special ability wich can make things easier.

The dialogue choices are atrocious, and no matter what answer you choose to most questions it does not matter as the game will pretty much put you where you need to be.

Character customization is brilliant, and the graphics within post-apocalypse Boston are fantastic. But that is what we've come to expect from next-generation consoles, what matters here is the game. The workbenches to enhance your weapons and armour are great additions, and the fact that this gives junk a purpose in the game as you can use junk when enhancing weapons and armour is a very clever prospect. The settlement building is okay, but I'm sure people did not buy this game to play a budget version of The Sims.

Apart from all of this, Fallout 4 does not improve on anything Fallout 3 had to offer, and in some aspects even regressed rather than progressed. It is not a bad game, not by any stretch of the imagination, just highly disappointing.

A PC port lacking fundamental options (I had to edit 2 separate .ini files to change the FOV and turn off Mouse Acceleration), a UI optimized for consoles, and a LOT of bugs all try desperately to make it so you won't have a good time. In my first 6 hours of play, I lost at least an hour of progress due to a mixture of bugs that locked up the game (always quicksave before using a terminal), and a horribly sporadic autosaving system. Additionally, the movement feels extremely dated. The AP you use to activate VATS also serves as a stamina meter that you use up while running (a la Skyrim). That's right, a stamina meter that gates how long you can run, in an open world game where 90% of your time is going to be spent running. I didn't like the mechanic in Skyrim, and I like it even less now.

But despite all of that, I find myself about 10 hours in, and wanting to play more of it, once I finish writting this review. The fundamental exploration is solid, the crafting system is interesting, and actually gives me a justification to pick up literally everything I possibly can, and the settlement system seems to have a decent amount of potential. The shooting is actually serviceable, compared to Fallout 3, but you'll still likely find yourself going into VATS on certain enemies with erratic movement patterns to try and conserve ammo.

Basically, I think that if you didn't like Fallout 3, there's almost no way you'll like Fallout 4. If you wanted to like Fallout 3, but couldn't because of the shooting mechanics/VATS, then you'll probably have a good time here. If you loved Fallout 3, and want more, then this is the game for you, but just know what you're getting yourself into. This is not a perfect game, or even a fantastic game in the year 2015, despite what many reviewers have said. Go back to 2011 or 2008, and my opinion would likely be different, but in 2015 I think this is a really solid exploration FPS/RPG with a lot of problems. If you're on the fence about this game, then don't get it now. I don't think I'd have a hard time recommending the game for $40, but $60 is just a bit steep (imo) for how many problems it has.

The voiced dialogue has been streamlined, and while adding a voice to the main character is a nice addition, it was ultimately ruined by the sheer scale of the Commonwealth. Unlike the voiced protagonists from BioWare's RPGs, the Sole Survivor hasn't got a single meaningful piece of dialogue. Every option is a bleak resemblance of each other, and will all result in the same conclusion in order to not end up with a million lines of dialogue. The sentences are short and bland, and the writers at BioWare got twice the amount of content in their dialogue wheel than Bethesda has done. It is an incredibly obvious illusion of "choice".

The combat system has had a major overhaul. It is better than many AAA shooters out there like Farcry and Call of Duty, and the crafting system is both addictive and inventive. Unfortunately, the crafting options seem to have limited the amount of weapon types in the game. Where Skyrim had dozens upon dozens of unique weapons, Fallout's unique weapon designs can be counted on a single, non-mutated hand. Note to developers: Slapping a randomly generated ability onto one of ten standard weapons does not make it a "unique" weapon!

Then there's the main story/the factions. The biggest issue with Fallout is the lack of real quests. Compared to Skyrim, Fallout has got a quarter of the amount of quests, and most of these are radiant, randomly generated side missions which add nothing to the world development (or your inventory for that sake, other than a few caps).

After 100 hours of gameplay, I'm no longer having that urge to pour every second of my life into Fallout 4, something Bethesda games usually have the ability to do even after 300 or 400 hours of gameplay. Half of my time in FO4 has been used on improving the settlements, but after realizing that it changes absolutely nothing for the progression and the in-game world, I'm left with the feeling of regret. I would like those hours back, please.

I don't want to come off as a gaming hipster, but I can't help but feel that FO4 was a step back in more departments than it has been a step forward compared to a game Skyrim, which was critiqued by old school fans for being "bland". Well, Bethesda took it a step further.

Fallout 4 was worth the money, it just wasn't worth the time.

    But here are my gripes:

    - TERRIBLE voice acting and facial animations. It's so bad that it takes you right out of the game.

    - Menus and UI need a lot more polish, as comparing weapons and armor and crafting mods is extremely cumbersome.

    - Load screens for entering buildings have been done away with for years in other games. Why is it so prevalent, even for tiny spaces in some cases?

    - settlements are great but it's a bummer that existing structures can't be modified or improved within them. The mechanics and opaque UI detract significantly from my experience.

    - so many mechanics, so few explanations. I've never had to google how to do things in a game as much as I have this one (running wires, comparing stats, settlers, etc.)

I'm saving everyone or searching for a duck tape. Which brings me to game mechanics. You can create new mod on your favourite gun but you cannot dissasemble other guns to get the right parts. House creation for settlers is pain - skipping this. Interesting characters, puzzles, epic battles(just deathclows) even funny dialogues are missing... seriously that just robots are funny. So why 7 points?? Dog is great. wearing a power armor is like to be an iron man. The dog. W.A.T.S targeting system is better. Dogmeat. Cooking and preparation of drugs /like it/. Fluffy the mans best friend running around fetching guns... Conclusion: lets hope for a good update that will repair the manifold game flaws. Expand

The world can be a fun place to explore but the characters and the quests start to feel very boring after a while and the settlement building is not fun at all. The main story is pretty boring as well and the dialogue options are a joke.

They could have mixed perks with skills, rather than removing skills completely. Glitches happen on ever game... give it a break people.........Dialogue system is okay not terrible. You just need to get used to it. I dont like how you get a Godly unkillable dog in the beginning, that was a huge turn off. Crafting and moding system is awesome, i really enjoy it. Characters to seem a little bland, but the Dialogue it self is a nice improvement. Character creation is extremely good, loved it. Combat itself was a huge improvement. I still wished they had good and bad karma. I really think they should have kept the skills, but joined it with the perks. The game itself is fun to play, but could have been a lot better. Expand

How to assign people to work and I did not understand and do not believe that it is in principle possible to do.

    2. The world is small. From this, too, it was hot. On the one hand, I already Jam empty endless worlds in games, but then the world and empty a little, just like your daddy dickhead. No animals, random encounters few, and those that have scenes represent a type of "Raiders vs. Ghouls" and "Brotherhood of Steel against the mutants." Dialogues are no such scenes there. Lulzim too. So ****ing "city", consisting of boxes with boarded windows and doors.
    3. Kraft cool weapons. Well, they probably will, after finished modes. Now even to cheat the sight on the gun should be nihuevo pumped into the right perks and years to collect garbage on the heath. One upgrade every four hours - not the fans, as for me.

4.Ot dialog wheels mass effect was hot, too. Not as much as some here, but decent. Mainly because of the words in the "wheel" does not conclude what will eventually figure. "Select" answer, and what a character - the game rubs. While this may seem simple, because all lines of dialogue SG - extremely retardovye. NIPAROLIPLEIT.

I've already posted a few instagram photos of the bugs in this game be it traders stuck on roofs or my companion swimming while in a second story building. I think I've been fortunate in not experiencing the ground busting glitches some have experienced.

I think its safe to call this game middle of the road in terms of what I expected in Fallout 4. I have praise for the crafting system which can be very enjoyable at times or a complete pain in the butt. Almost everything is used for crafting which can be overwhelming at times. Trying to provide a supply of chemicals for bombs and food for cooking and material for your weapons can have your backpack filled in one zone if you take absolutely everything. Still it can be fun to fully mod the 10mm pistol or for me the .44 mag and go dirty Harry on everything.

The settlement building and maintenance I found provided nothing for me. In my current playthrough I've only decided to build up Sanctuary and add random customization when bored. The others I care little about and defend them when the odd attack occurs or just leave them since I've found no consequences for my actions.

Graphically I have to agree with many that it is no leap from Fallout 3 or Elder Scrolls to Fallout 4. Feels slightly more improved but character animation can be sluggish or just silly (insert Youtube vids on the matter) The most stunning visuals I found was the Glowing Sea which actually gave me the sense of post apocalyptic disaster. Long distant views the frame rate can drop and look depleted which takes away from the sense of exploration. On the other hand the mini nuke still looks very nice when going off.

The voice acting I can find no fault with as with Fallout and Elder Scrolls it can be a pillar of the game when driving the story along. The characters so far have been well done some are what you expect in cliche and heck some are just a waste of script but when trying to populate Boston I expect things to get muddy.

I think the story has been pretty good so far. I'm not going to give it an Oscar with any "I want my son back!" kind of plot but heck still not bad even if it tries to come off as Blade Runner (for me anyways). Consequences, tough choices I've yet to see anything that would test that. I can't start the game then start rampaging a village at least I don't think so (miss you Las Vegas). I'm not saying that is a deal breaker but the sense of hopelessness, the fight against "evil" I'm just not enticed like I expected. Some missions are repetitive, "get this for me" "great" "get another thing for me" or "Go kill all these bad guys" reminds me of WOW grinding

I'm a sucker for exploring and I think just like Fallout 3 it does this very well. From the mayors bunker, food depots, rail yards, radar towers etc it can be a lot to dig through while picking up all the goodies inside. Combat can be sloppy, I haven't noticed any gun lag but I almost never use VATS and yet I recall it being a life saver in Fallout 3. Unless I'm trying to pick off a target with a bolt action that's closing in on me I never touch it.

I give it a 7/10 because I like the voice acting I like most of the customization it has allowed me and though I dare to call this a next-gen game I think it adds some interesting features to the Fallout series but does not break the mold from what I expected.

15 hours in, and I call it a mixed blessing. Here's my list of pros and cons.

    The good
-Its big. It feels less big than Skyrim IMO, but there is a lot of content I've not seen yet, and there seems to be a lot of dimension to everything (e.g. can go in many buildings, if I can't, I can still get on top of them somehow)
-Crafting. Its pretty sweet to construct a town. About 1/3 of my time has been spent doing this. Maybe too easy though...also it needs a re-balance badly. Why does breaking down a pistol give me 6 steel, and scrapping a car only gives me 10? Still fun though.
-Dialogue. Bear with me...I don't love it, but its better than I thought it would be based on early reviews. Also, the voiced protagonist doesn't annoy me nearly as much as I thought...in fact, the "Silver Shroud" quest was pretty amazing/hilarious.
-Graphics. Again, not great, but better than I thought. I'm not disappointed, but I'm not blown away either.
-A.I. While the enemies aren't necessarily smarter, they at least are difficult to hit (e.g. deathclaw strafes towards you back and forth, but isn't actively dodging you). Some enemies use cover pretty well too. Heh...some don't.

    The bad
-Dialogue. Better than I thought does not equal great. In fact, I HATE the dialogue wheel. About 75% of the time its fine, but that other 25% is just stupid. I need a mod that writes out everything. If I want a "sarcastic" comment, I've got a 50/50 chance my character says something funny vs. mean. If its funny, my companion enjoys it, If its mean, they think I'm a jerk. Most folks are also complaining about "same outcome no matter what," but that is often the case for most interactions anyways. However...I have other problems with the dialogue. See below.
-Options/checks. There are so few, and it sucks. Sometimes I get a speech check, but not often. I miss having 2 or 3 options for dialogue that are strictly based on intelligence, charisma, or a random skill for say "science" or "barter." 4 options (really 2-3) is not enough, and with hardly any "checks," its all too simplified. Also, I dreadfully miss the karma system.
-Skills. What the ****, man? You just did away with them? You just simplified like, 15-20% of the game?! Fewer skill checks, fewer requirements for perks, fewer fun options for dialogue? Christ I hope someone comes up with a mod to bring them back. It would be a tremendous undertaking, but a guy can dream, right?
-Leveling. Theoretically I can play forever, and have all perks and 10/10 for every SPECIAL category. Jesus, at LEAST have perks that are mutually exclusive, or a maximum number of perks put into "SPECIAL" building, or something. What they offered up to us is dumb, one dimensional, and brings me to my last grouping.

    Unknown
-Replayability. Huge unknown at this point. I've only scratched the main storyline, so I don't know if my choices really matter. The SPECIAL/perk system does not look good though...it basically means that while I can make different character builds early on, my outcomes are largely the same after 20-25 levels. That REALLY sucks. I hope my choices really do matter though...

Closing statement: Got this game for full price (DANGIT STEAM!! 12 bucks off a week after?!). If/when a fallout 5 comes around, I won't pay full price for it, nor will I buy it within 6 months of it coming out. Hear that Bethesda? Speaking with my dollar here. While your game is fun, and I'm enjoying it, it takes major steps backward for every step forward, and you gotta fix that before I'll buy another Fallout at full price. You made a lot of fans happy by letting us build settlements and such, and the voiced protagonist has potential...but you royally -effed up your dialogue/skill/dimensionality of the game.

Fallout 4 was focus-grouped into severe mundanity - yes - but it is still a good game. If another developer made this and called it Fallout 1, I would have clicked thumbs up. But they didn't and it's the 5th in the series so it deserves to receive rough criticism for such blunderous errors and pitiful simplifications. Conversations aren't as interesting, or quick as the Witcher 3 or with a certainty, Deus ex: Human Revolution. The shooting is more "powerful", but not as mechanically risky or difficult as old Fallout games. Repairing is gone (it's almost funny). But the wasteland is interesting and the radio is also good.

6.5/10 (as a fallout game made by Bethesda)
8/10 (as Fallout 1 made by imaginary new studio.)

It's not even a true contender for GOTY in my view, it just doesn't offer enough.

    Let's start with the positives...

    - Crafting, the ability to craft and the sheer amount of things you can make, as well as all the options surrounding the crafting from sending settlers there to having stores up and full on skyscrapers is fantastic.
They could have done with some better designs for walls/roofing but it's not a big deal

    - Character build, the way you can build up your characters skill points is great , or SPECIAL as it's called in Fallout. It offers a tonne of customisation as far as the build you want or your character, which is good and actually does make a difference in a lot of scenarios. Having high Charisma for instance makes a lot of things easier.

    - Map size.. With a game like this you need a massive map to justify it, and it delivers. I don't think it's anywhere near as big as The Crew map size (Just to compared cross genre maps) , and I don't think it's bigger than Witcher 3, but it's certainly big enough to explore for a long time.

    Now for the negatives...

There are too many things against this game to give it a high rank unless I am going to be a biased idiot fan boy, which I'm not.

    - Graphics, Sure I understand the scope of the game, and the size of the map but you know what? It's 2015, there are plenty of games with HUGE maps, and more going on with FAR better graphics. It's unacceptable to use an old game engine in 2015 & it DOES matter.

    - Story... The story was weak, there's no two ways about it. It was almost emotionless especially in dialogue with other characters. At no point was I "pulled in" when it came to the story, I beat the game, had tonnes of settlements at a high happiness rating, did a lot of little side quests and then got bored, all in less than a week & I haven't been back.
They seriously need a better writer, or more creativity for this series. To think that Bethesda could make a marvel such as Skyrim with unbelievable storylines even in the side quests, & yet they can also make this tired weak story? It's disappoining.

    - Shooting. Yes I know you're supposd to rely on VATS more, but it's a ridiculous system. It's just so unnecessary and to be honest they would have a better game if they scrapped VATS altogether and made a good consistent shooting style . The free aim shooting in this game feels clunky, and extremely inconsistent... countless times I've watched bullets go through enemies and not register as hits, it's just not as fluid as it could be.

If someone asked me what RPG to buy and they could only choose one, it would be Witcher 3 over Fallout 4 every day of the week.

Witcher 3 is seriously a superior game in every conceivable way, from the story, the character interaction, the character build, the graphics, the world state, hell even little things like romancing!

There is no sensible person who can justify buying this over Fallout 4 if they could only buy one, it didn't deliver anywhere near the hype and leaves me wondering what the hell happened to the developer that made one of the best RPGs ever in Skyrim.

Here are the problems I have with this game in the first hour:

It takes about 30 minutes before you even start playing the game, the movie sequence takes ages. And then it takes another 30 minutes of boring gameplay before you get in your suit.

Once you actually get in the suit (which is an awesome moment btw) you have to repair it all the time. This is a grind and gets old quickly.

The graphics are nowhere near as good as say Witcher 3 and loading times are so slow (have no idea why could be my rig but other modern games load so much faster)

The insects and monsters that attack you when you walk around feel like they were coded 20 years ago. Their graphics are terrible and they move around like blocks of wood on string!

You get loads of guns but hardly any ammo. You have to search and go on missions to stock up, another boring grind.

The inventory systems takes ages to learn and feels like you are studying for an exam. It is over complicated and confusing.

I am having fun but I don't know if I have the energy or this to carry on playing.

Typical situation is when one settlement being bothered by raiders (ghouls, mutants) almost in the other part of the map, so they want to clean them out. It's simplified but if you don't expect perfect rpg as 1 and 2 was you'll be happy. Great freeroam fps sandbox that needs more optimization.

The new building system has some flaws that i hope will be worked out. The shooting mechanics have been revamped to an almost smooth shooting unlike fallout 3 where vats was your best friend. Vats is anther thing that changed it is no longer a full stop of time but a slow motion time lapse. Overall the gameplay mission and side quest will keep you hooked. There is defintly graphic improvement over fallout 3. I was just expecting a little more individualism from fallout 4. The pros and cons balnce each other out though. Expand

One of Bethesda's biggest missed opportunities, so much of this game could have been great but as with all Bethesda games it was released in a state resembling half finished and had things that should have been day 1 pushed on us with DLC and the rest left to modders. Microsoft please save this franchise.

As somebody who loved both Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas I highly anticipated the release of this game(perhaps a little too much) and unfortunatly like most games ive purchased recently it seemed to do nothing more than leave me feeling disappointed.

First off Ill start with the pros of the game. Its an entertaining game and will keep players going for hours on end. However the story line offers no immersion for the player often feeling very forced especially with the new voice options ( all four buttons offer options but often just yes and no answers, all resulting in the same future series of events). Previous games main stories seemed to keep players drawn to the game but this offers nothing more than "Wheres my Son" and some side missions almost as if Liam Neeson had to go off and raise the money before going to look for his daughter in taken.
Side missions dont know have the same feel as they did in previous games. Both the Minutemen and the Brotherhood of steel follow the same pattern go here, talk to X, go and clear out where X asks you to, return to X, then return to who started the quest. Needless journey time between places and similar stories just leave the game feeling repetivive. This also leads to a situation where exploring the wasteland seems pointless and they areas you find come up on these missions with the same plots leaves it feeling boring unlike previous games which had so many different things going off if you took a walk (remember the Republic of Dave in fallout 3).

Good but very average game, storyline and game play leave a lot to be desired, new features such as the settlement building feel more like time filler than interesting play. Would recommend not paying full price for this but wait for a cheaper second hand version.

Yes, this is still the Fallout that we know and love. The post-apocalyptic setting. The lore. The mutated creatures. Wandering around, seeing something cool in the distance, going there, killing all the bad guys, grabbing the loot, seeing something else in the distance, going there, repeat. It's all back in Fallout 4.

That being said though, they have taken quite a few steps back with this game. Yes, the RPG system has been simplified. There are no skills anymore, weapon and armor don't degrade, there is no karma system, and the perks system has been reworked. The skills and reworked perks system, I can live with. The other two, not so much. I imagine they did it to streamline the series and appeal to a wider audience. The lack of a karma system means that the only meaningful choices you get to make are what factions to join, which leaves little room for any real role-playing. The story and setting this time around also don't have the appeal of Fallout 3. With a few exceptions, characters are flat and uninteresting, and this isn't helped by the lack of interesting player dialogue choices. Boston also doesn't have the uniqueness that Washington DC had. The usual Bethesda bugs are still in abundance. NPC followers can get snagged on objects, static cars can unexpectedly go flying and crush you, bad VATS cameras will glitch through enemies, and so on. The UI is also a bit of a mess. The pipboy menus in general are cluttered and confusing, and certain key binds are hard bound to actions. You can also build settlements now. It's a cool idea, but poorly explained and implemented. 30 hours in, I still don't know what ultimate purpose they serve or how it benefits me.

Onto the positives. The world looks great. The art style in general is more colorful and vibrant than Fallout 3's, helped by a much improved graphics engine. Art quality is hit or miss though. Some areas look great while others look laughably bad. Character models and animations have been improved. 3rd person view in particular feels much better because of this. Character creation is also very robust, with tons of face customization options. The gun gameplay and general player navigation is also improved, and feels more in line with what you'd expect from a modern FPS. It can still be quite janky, especially when jumping or trying to navigate rocky terrain. You can also craft weapons and armor now, which is great. That also means every little clutter item in the world should be picked up, as they are used for crafting.

So in conclusion, if you loved Fallout 3 for it's setting and and exploration gameplay, Fallout 4 will give you more of that but with a bit of next-gen polish. If you wanted a deep RPG experience, then the streamlining that Bethesda has done may disappoint you. Though not the classic that it's predecessor was, Fallout 4 is still a good game and a worthy addition to the Fallout series.

Graphics are not the end all be all of a game, there are plenty of games who's interactive narrative and game play more than make up for lacking aesthetics, but considering this game was essentially built on top of an existing engine you would think that freed up some development time to refine what they were making for it. This simply doesn't appear to be the case. In fact with theGraphics are not the end all be all of a game, there are plenty of games who's interactive narrative and game play more than make up for lacking aesthetics, but considering this game was essentially built on top of an existing engine you would think that freed up some development time to refine what they were making for it. This simply doesn't appear to be the case. In fact with the exception of the gun and character models and improvements to the shading you'd be forgiven for thinking anything had changed at all.

The settlement building strikes me more as merely an after thought, it lacks both content and refinement. The snap-to-grid is often seemingly arbitrary and the complete lack of window pieces and single door frame is just bizarre given the scale of customisation hinted at during revealers. The impression of the builder at first is that it would function much like Rust's/ARK's builder that some gamers might be familiar with, but it simply does not have the same level of functionality. It can only be assumed that Bethesda included the basics and hoped that the modding community would pick up where they left off; which really smacks of laziness more than anything. Needless to say this feature is frustrating more than anything so it's saving grace is the fact that it is in fact optional.

VATS has never quite been the same since it moved from Fallout's turn based combat in the first 2 titles, it never quite gelled with the real time combat of an FPS. The primary incentive to using it in FO3 was simply to avoid the even more insufferable real time combat. Now VATS has moved towards playing like some pseudo bullet time mechanic since rather than stopping time, it only slows it down and whilst some players have enjoyed the added urgency of it, it really only emphasised the mediocre animations and bizarre physics at play throughout. The saving grace in this case of course is the massive improvement to actual gun play that allowed me to near on completely ignore VATS altogether, though the other major reason for avoiding it was it rendering you immobile and thus vulnerable to explosives like bombs, grenades and kamikaze super mutants, serving more as a disadvantage than a boon. It was just a shame it felt like any investment into use of action points felt wasted as a result.

One pro is the shear amount of content in general. There are a lot of experiences to be found and had through "The Commonwealth". The most obvious comparison here would be against Skyrim, a game by the same developers, on the same engine. Which recycled a lot more of its assets which vicariously worked wonders for performance/optimisation. But there-in lies some of the games [Fallout 4] fundamental problems, being more demanding on any particular systems hardware, particularly memory and data with no real apparent improvement in quality. One thing is for sure though, there are plenty game hours to be invested.

Lastly, before a final anecdote, the UI is something of a nightmare. It's a pain in the arse to navigate, at least on a keyboard, it might seem more streamlined on a controller, but your hands are all over the place, moving your selection up and down and swapping out menu's, i'm still hitting the wrong navigational buttons 60 hours into the game.

Anecdote regarding S.P.E.C.I.A.L: I'm not sure how this was balanced, it seemed like Charisma and Intelligence would play more of an important role in terms of survival. I almost exclusively play Strength/Endurance builds due to being generally self-sustaining and practical. I decided i should really change and go for something different and interesting. However even with 8/10 charisma by level 7 and +4 charisma from apparel and chem/beverage bonuses i still fail 9/10 charisma checks in dialogue; and when reloading to check for different results it still takes 5-6 attempts just to roll a positive result. Against yellow (easy/normal) checks, not even orange or red which are harder. Yellow dialogue options. I was hoping this would be more balanced than Skyrim wasn't.

The ability to create and upgrade my own Armour and weapons is something that this series has needed for a while and the removal of weapon degradation is, at least in my opinion a welcome removal.

In terms of the create my own community, I didn't go any further than the game forced me to do as everything about this mechanic felt like a grind and tacked on, only there to get in the way of an already short and basic story.

The real pleasure of this game comes from the exploration and various missions in the fallout universe but these in themselves lacked the trademark fallout humor that this series is known for.

If I could change one thing it would be the pipboy interface, it is so annoying to jump into the pipboy screen only to see the screen flicker or wade through screens to get what I wanted.
Yes the pipboy is iconic to the series but seriously, there has to be a better way or a more updated interface than being forced to use this awful mechanic.

I will say that like most fallout games, you cannot really judge the game until you have all the DLC installed and play the game fresh and whilst right now fallout 4 may be a little bit of a let down, in twelve months or so this will be a much more fuller game.

The quests (pretty much from everyone you meet) are the same over, and over, and over again. Go here kill these ghouls, raiders, or super mutants. If not that then it's go here and get (insert weird piece of technology here). For the most part though, I enjoyed my time with Fallout 4 but not enough to do another play through. There is a lot more color now, so everything doesn't have that greenish brownish hue. I wasn't sure at the start if I liked that or not only because Fallout 3 really looked like several nuclear bombs went off, thus ensuring that apocalypse look and feel. The color is actually kinda nice. The gun play was also changed up a little bit making it a little less aggravating than previous titles, not to mention the addition of legendary weapons, and armor. Legendary armor more or less give you buffs to stats like intelligence, and charisma. Whereas legendary weapons add buffs like fire damage, or extra damage to specific types of enemies. Now about those dialogue choices. In my opinion dialogue choices in previous fallout games drastically effected how the game would play out. In Fallout 4 however, it felt as though I could either be nice as hell or a sarcastic nice as hell **** and it never REALLY changed the outcome. Sure, I could be kind of an **** and the character might not like me but they would still do the exact same thing if I was nice but instead have a good opinion of me. I didn't feel like there were any real consequences to any of my choices. That said, playing the same types of fetch or kill missions don't really give you a chance to be evil or good. If you are a long time Fallout fan I fear you may be a bit disappointed. If you haven't played any Fallout games and are looking to scratch that RPG itch, then you should definitely give it a shot at say 30 or 40 bucks, and get the DLC with it. Some of the DLC is better than the original game I think. Expand

This sounds cool but all the endings are 90% the same?? What the hell?? This doesn't make any sense.
It would be nice if there were 3 very different endings.

Graphics wise it's weak. I mean come one guys this game has like PS3 graphics.
I could justify the graphics if the game ran steady but it doesn't. In busy sections the frame-rate drops enormously and stutter begins. This is very annoying and takes the fun away when shooting.

The customization is AWESOME!! Enormous ammount of parts you can craft and use for your weapons/armor. The settlements are also very nice. Fun for the creative people but doesn't add much to the story.

There are also companions you can travel with. This adds life to your story. Without this the travels would be a bit boring. But this is something personal as others like to travel alone.

The overall feeling of this game was good but i just can't accept the fact that a huge developer like Bethesda uses an old engine with sloppy frame-rates.

There haven't been a single patch as today to fix these issues. I wil rate this a 6 now. A 7 when there is a patch.

I picked up the game hesitant since I'm not a huge post apocalyptic fan, but I figured the story was good and depth/breadth would not be a concern. (I've heard some state the game has well over 150 hours of quests) Unfortunately, a number of factors left me feeling this was average at best.

Gunplay, outside of V.A.T.S. (think turn based system) it's almost impossible to hit anything. The aiming well and truly sucks.

Graphics are extremely dated given the next gen consoles capability, and it's just hard to spend hours on a game when things look dated and two dimensional. (The colour palette was debated but didn't overly concern me, it's a wasteland after all).

Finally, game breaking bugs rendered this extremely frustrating. An hour into the game I completed a quest which requires you to kill all hostiles in a town. I was unable to complete it due to a known bug which would not register completion once the town was clear. (Seriously almost the first important quest!?)

The above factors, for me unfortunately were enough to derail my enjoyment and interest.

Hardcore fans ofc will love the game since it has all the great elements of others in the series.

But, if you're 50/50 on this, I would recommend passing.

I looks as good as some areas of Half-Life 2). I'll admit that at times the world does look very good, and this is usually when the sun is setting or during a storm. Anyway, on to the positives; Bethesda are amazing at telling a story and making you feel that every decision you make will have an effect on where the story ends up, and that's because it will. This game certainly has no lack of content but it lacks challenge as long as you have any sort of armor and not a pipe pistol. The amount of content is made by how much of this you do: "General, we've just gotten word that another settlement needs our help" or "The commonwealth has no shortage of abominations when you're ready to go clear a place out just let me know" What I'm trying to say is the content gets repetitive and boring really quick. Although there still are a lot of cool things to do the sheer amount of simply clearing places out creates this sort of hole that it just can't get out of. This game did improve on how different all of the characters can be. The absence of skill points is something that I really enjoy. I think they should have done all previous fallout games and Skyrim. The perk system gives you a lot more customization options and finally you can get a character with all of the perks which sounds really awesome and I plan to do that.

TL;DR: Too much clearing places out not enough cool stuff. Perk system greatly improved.

Fallout 4 leans to the Shooting side of things. It strips down the gameplay from the actual RPG elements and offers a meta-nuclaer shooting gallery which of course keep its charm and gameplay wealth but also feels a little too friendly for the new comers. The Base builder mode is unnecessary, boring and irritating. Unfortunately, overall, there are no steps forward for this Nuclear Holocaust Behemoth of the video games industry. Only steps sideways.
