Superior gunplay to prior entries but inferior writing. Response wheel is a downgrade, crafting is way too annoying and involved, central quest is interesting but everything around it feels poorly though-out. Drops a lot of what makes other Fallout games successful in favor of other choices, with mixed results. Still has it's moments though (rad sea).

You seem to spend too much time picking over the scenery looking for junk for the over-complicated crafting system and getting killed by random baddies who have nothing to do with the ongoing story, which actually discourages exploration. Some of the good points of the game are the great quantity and variety of places to explore as well as the new way of building settlements and personalization of weapons that undoubtedly were the mechanics with which I had the most fun.

Now what about the negative part of the game that most caught my attention was the repetitiveness of the quests mainly from side quests that are almost entirely composed of go somewhere and kill a bunch of invaders or mutants, another thing that disappointed me a lot was The story of Fallout 4 that tries to be profound in the plot of a father in search of his kidnapped son, but that fails miserably in giving us a sense of urgency or attachment to the plot.

In my opinion this failure is due to the lack of charisma and development of the characters that often appear to have no personality or life of their own as if their existence depended solely on serving the main character making most of the characters in the game easily forgettable except for A few exceptions like Nick Valentine, the synthetic who works as a private detective in Diamond City with a noir style that charms everyone, and the butler robot Codsworth who served the family of his character before the war and that was the 200 years in which you were frozen Care of your old home.

Finally I can say that Fallout 4 is a good game in the direction of bring us much content, however with some errors and bugs dated and failing to surprise and overcome their predecessors becoming repetitive from a certain point other than Skyrim that until the days Has a lot to offer and certainly does not match the great RPGs of this generation like The Witcher 3 and Dragon Age inquisition. Summarizing Fallout 4 is worth to playing but is not a priority in RPG or worth a full price.

One of Bethesda's biggest missed opportunities, so much of this game could have been great but as with all Bethesda games it was released in a state resembling half finished and had things that should have been day 1 pushed on us with DLC and the rest left to modders.

The shooting feels completely different from Fallout 3 and New Vegas, and for the first time, I feel like shooting my way out of a situation is more fun than talking through dialogue. Now that the positives are out of the way, I have to say that Bethesda really ruined what they had began to build up within the series. They've oversimplified nearly every RPG element that made the last two games fun and exciting. The dialogue system lacks any real depth and the fact that they added voice acting to the protagonist makes it feel less like I made my own unique character, and more like Bethesda made one for me and I just happen to be able to control him. The leveling up system is no longer enjoyable either, and the writing and plot are so bad and downright insulting to the intelligence of the player that it feels like Bethesda just gave up caring. Fallout 3 was a love letter to the original Fallout games, while this felt like it was just an excuse for Bethesda to keep their hands onto the Fallout IP. Expand

I remember having played fallout 3 in 2013 5 years after it released. I have good memories of fallout 3 and for me, that was a new franchise I discovered and was looking forward for the next installments. After, for some reasons, I wasn't able to get into Fallout New Vegas and I stopped after a few hours.

Now, almost 8 years later, I was wondering if I should give Fallout 4 a try. I'm glad I did. It reminded me a lot Fallout 3 but with positive improvements. Now, let's explain why I give it 7/10 which is a little bit low compared to the other AAA games I review here.

First, I think the ratings could vary a lot among players depending of how the bugs and glitches impacted your playthrough. For me, it almost made me quit the game after the first 10 hours. There's a whole faction I couldn't do because of a bug in Concord involving Preston, one of the main characters. So there is a lot of XP i couldn't get and I think this faction was really important (it's the first one and give you the first important missions). That' s why also I finished the main story a bit underleveled (L44). So, depending of each player's experience, I understand any ratings between 5 and 9 (the 6,7 average sounds fair)

I decided to continue my playthrough and after, the real fun began. Even though the engine Bethesda uses is really old, I had a blast playing this game and killing super mutants, hacking terminals and lockpicking doors. The companion system is great also.

    Here are a few cons:
    1. The graphics are disappointing. (not a significant improvement if we compare to Fallout 3 or Fallout New Vegas)
    2. Ridiculous long loading times
    3. The shooting is a bit janky
    4. The ending is weak

Final thoughts: There is a lot of meat in this game and you will have value for what you pay. You should give it a try if you can accept the bugs and cope with that. This is a good RPG and the open world is more organic than a lot of actual AAA open world games.

However, I feel that the new focus towards these weapon systems has hurt the ability for choice-making, which made other Fallout games before it so unique. Despite much defense that I've heard, I refuse to consider this game an RPG. Not in the same way Fallout 3, New Vegas, and even Skyrim were. I enjoyed the companions in this game. I thought they were well-fleshed out in terms of story, and I played with them beside me for almost all 40-50 hours I spent on the game. I also appreciate Fallout 4's beautiful world, and I think it's probably one of Bethesda's more creative over the years. Overall, I liked this game. I don't regret playing it. Fallout 4 looks bad. Compare it to The Witcher 3 and there is no contest. Compare it to Fallout 3 and you wonder what Bethesda had been doing for 7 years. It's not just the lighting, character models, and ever present green hue. The game recycles models from Fallout 3 and itself, over and over, so you really have no idea where you are or what the landscape is supposed to be. The character models and faces are indeed terrible. Enemies are completely uninteresting and all wear variations of the same types of armor. The dialogue options are just as generic and dialogue options rarely, if ever, have an impact on the game.

Fallout 4 also plays bad. The V.A.T.S. system from Fallout 3 returns without any apparent changes. (Was this entire game planned as DLC for Fallout 3?) Players can queue up attacks in a way that briefly turns battles into turn based encounters. I like V.A.T.S. as an alternative for RPG fans who are not saavy with shooters. However, if you are saavy with shooters, the live action gunplay is garbage. I don't expect a Bethesda game to play as smooth as a Bungie game, but at least nail the fundamentals of slowing down the reticle speed as you near the target. Or put another way, playtest your game with a controller and not a keyboard and mouse! I found that cover and sidestepping made no difference with enemies. You stand (or crouch) your ground and shoot until all enemies are dead. Every battle is like a war of attrition. Whether you go melee or guns, V.A.T.S. or live action, the gameplay has to pause every thirty seconds to a minute while you scroll through a menu to use a health item.

By the way, I have not got gotten to the worst part. The game forces players to build settlements and manage the settlers. At first, I thought this idea was a little tacked on but had intriguing implications. Those fine thoughts were dispelled as soon as the game forced me to assign a settler to work a water pump. There is no overarching menu screen for this. You cannot boot up a version of Fallout Shelter on your phone. Instead, you clumsily enter crafting mode, highlight a settler with your reticle, and then highlight the item you want the settler to work. If you do not set up your settlements well enough, they will be constantly attacked by enemies. The attacks will show up as quest objects and you can help if you want. Don't. The attacks never end and you will never actually finish the game if you go down the base building, base defending rabbit hole. The entire settlement system and the defense of settlements looks from the outside like a great way to pad playtime so the game looks bigger than it really is.

The settlement and crafting system seems very 2015. Minecraft was incredibly successful back then and many games were jumping on the crafting bandwagon. Fallout seems like a good series to add crafting because you make do with the resources left behind. But not this kind of crafting. Not a chore. Adding insult to injury, every building you craft looks a ramshackle shack. No matter how you design a giant mansion for yourself, it will always look like a monstrosity. Why not just move into one of the cookie cutter office buildings that are still standing?

Fallout 4 does allow mods on the PS4 to change the playing experience. I saw some that make collecting items and thus base building easier by removing the carry limit. This is especially important because all settlement structures require parts that have to be salvaged, and it sucks to make multiple trips to carry it all. Various other mods solve the settlement defense problem. The downsides to mods are breaking the game and losing access to trophies. The game is already a sandbox that is essentially made to be broken. This is the only reason I play these kinds of RPGs. If I wanted a good shooting game, a good building game, or a good story game, I would play almost anything else.

All-in-all, Fallout 4 is a crap game. Playing it more does not make it better. All I really want is for Skyrim and The Witcher 3 to have a baby, and let me make my own character in a world that looks as good as The Witcher 3 and has the quality storytelling of The Witcher 3. Bethesda games are the best in their niche if only because they are the only games in that niche. To be clear about the effect of this, I waited this long to buy Fallout 4 because of how disappointed I was with the game trailers and previews. Quality matters.

Update: I finished the main story and my opinions are unchanged. A dud is a dud.

Full Disclosure: I downloaded Fallout 4 for "free" with the PS+ collection on PS5. Not only did I not pay $60 for this game, I also did not suffer long loading times.

    This is a solid game all around, yes it isn't as good as Skyrim for a number of reasons;

--Too many boring go clear a building quests
    --Locations reused multiple times
    --Uglier terrain
--Nameless NPCs to 'flesh out' cities
    --Lack of location variety
    --Obvious copy and pasted areas
    --More bland infinitely generated quests

But it does come with a bunch of upgrades

--you don't have to level up a perk to unlock a perk, you are free as long as you meet the level requirement for that stat
--you don't have to go into a menu to loot containers and bodies
--your followers all have their own backstories, and as they get to like you they reveal a little bit of it here and there, until they ask you to go on a quest with them!
--completing said follower quest unlocks a perk
--there are multiple factions that actually oppose each other, you can't just join them all

There are also times it seems Bethesda didn't care about the game. When you clear out a location to build a settlement, the dead bodies stay there forever, and I am playing in 2021. You'll be addicted and frustrated. It feels so annoying and passive aggressive when they force a random event "kill some people for no real reason" missions to be selected and pop up on your HUD.

I really love the Fallout franchise. It's a lot of fun, a really interesting open-world to explore, and also has some interesting lore and locations. Um, so Fallout 4? It's incredibly okay. I went through 3 stages of grief playing the game.
    1. I love it! The gameplay is smooth, solid, feels satisfying shooting guns and collecting loot. The actual core-mechanics and leveling up system is pretty good this time. Not as deep, or dense, as the OG, but definitely good. Building bases is kinda fun. I love the environment and setting. I mean, it's basically fallout 3...but better looking? Also has nice gameplay elements.
    2. Wait! Is this basically a grind-fest-looter-shooter...why are the main quests and side-quests all feel repetitive and annoying. Um, it's got some alright moments. But like, hmmm, I'm getting BORED FAST.
    3. **** this! **** What are these repetitive randomly generated **** quests? Why is the narrative so weak? **** the Companions, they are annoying (and also pointless) What does this game even want to be??? WHY IS IT A **** LOOTER SHOOTER!!!!!!! WTF !!!! I just...I guess I'm done with the game. Thank God. Moving on.

These are my opinions on Fallout 4. It's a fallout looter shooter w light RPG elements and annoying repetitive generated quests. Gets really Dull after about 20 hours of gameplay. None of the factions are that interesting either! I also Really REALLY missed (and hate) what they do with the Insitute. It's all boring...I really missed the Enclave. Also having a voiced character is **** DUMB and takes away from the immersive elements of these games. **** dumb.

Super Mixed bag aye. I would recommend this game for 10 dollars (I paid this much for it) You do get a lot of content. The game is flawed.

But I want to say that the players have done a great job. There are many modifications on the Internet that fix the errors of the original game. It is even possible to find modifications for interesting missions, since the missions in the original are very boring and monotonous in the "go and fetch" style. For Fallout 4 with mods, this game would get 8/10 from me.

Satisfaction and musics are great. Graphics are good for its era. Most fun part is ability to hold and move anything (if not very heavy) like moving props in gmod. Game is based on looting and crafting system. Number of items in game is unbelievable. Story is amazing and attractive. Player can get the feeling of revenge easily. World of Fallout 4, Commonwealth, is huge and almost every part is filled with enemies, secrets, missions, and etc. Perks are fun. Leveling up and investing points in base perks unlock other perks connected to them. Father and son feeling is at point. Almost everything is great but again, bugs.. It feels a little unfinished. For example when talking to an NPC, it draws out gun out of nowhere or walks away while talking and cuts conversation which means you need to start conversation again from beginning. Anyway, post apocalyptic world feeling, atmosphere is great but as i said it feels "uncooked". Expand

Fallout 4 engages you by its graphically astonishing, beautiful, dangerous and unforgiving world. But falls short on providing depth to what looks superficially engaging.
How ironic it may sound, the game's achilles heel are its predecessors and its Bethesda's peers, that made more with less.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Fallout 4, when you get down it, is a game that achieves everything it sets out to do, its just that what it aims to be is another unambitious open-world adventure. The vanilla game itself runs well, though when there are any hiccups they are extremely noticeable but not game-breaking, same with the glitches which are, from my experience, almost entirely graphical. The game also tries to tell a narrative with multiple paths, which is maybe the most unengaging because of the plain dumb plot and the lack of significant story interaction. Progressing the story requires quest completion, which means completing simple tasks like killing enemies or interacting with something or someone, which isn't always terribly interesting but almost always clear to the player thanks to quest markers, though ultimately the entire game is just following the way point and making a lot of the same interactions. Combat is the game's greatest strength, every weapon feel great to use in bouts but a lot of the enemies you'll be fighting aren't all that interesting, with illusionary battle tactics from most of your combatants, they all may as well fight like Space Invaders. Players can also customize their abilities with perks, which is honestly just fine, their fun enough even the useless ones. Something new to Fallout is settlement building and crafting system, which sucks and is the most boring aspect, for some people along with me at least especially because its lacking and shoe-horned importance. Another big part of the game is the huge explorable open-world, which is incredibly detailed and is almost entirely filled with interesting locations, however some of the things you find or have do in these places may not really be all that interesting, Getting around to these places is easy with fast-travel, but I feel like a lot of the loading screens from doing so slow down the pace with later game loading taking significantly longer, i feel this wouldn't be a issue if the area around the locations was just more interesting same with the interior exits on to seemingly empty (but almost always) roof areas. As a whole the game is fine, if you like this sort of thing then play Fallout 4 but if you don't then prepare to be shutting the game off when your attention shifts to anything that isn't as dull. 14 months and a ton of patches, and crashes later, I've finished the main story and too many quests of this AAA Early Access.
I didn't bought the overpriced DLC, the game already has a lot of content and areas to explore. I was expecting something more polished, taking into account that the engine is from a game more than 5 years old.

This game isn't bad it's mediocre it tries to be something it's not and gives you a barebones store with a lack luster world with a radio that has recycled music with only a few new tunes and worst off it gives you really lame partners and at most this game has decently going for it is the mod inspired building because everything else gets really... linear and repetitive. This game is trying to be a Mass Effect it's trying to be a Witcher and it fails overall I wouldn't say this is an extremely bad game but again it's not a good fallout game the leveling is... pretty bad the guns feel better I will give I that but aside from minor things this game feels like it took one step forward and two steps back so I'll give this a 5 out of 10.

I seriously miss the skill checks in dialogue, and therefor the skill points system. I miss more dialogue options and quest branching. The building mechanics are just horribly boring and tedious. And hearing about 76, I think it would be close to the worst thing I could have played. I do hope they inject a little more RPG into their games again. Expand

Fun way to pass the time but it's more of a sandbox for me than a real game. I haven't been bothered to do the main quest, which isn't very engaging. The combat system is meh and, while the game looks better than its predecessors, it's still relatively flat.
However, the open world remains fun to explore and the sheer amount of side quests make it worth playing.
All in all a pretty okay game.

They don't list positives (other than a huge open world), and say the negative reviews are unwarranted. Lol what? Dear reader, I assure you, this game at its very best is mediocre. And at times it is genuinely frustrating. I'm not one to compare different games across different genres, but Fallout 4 should be ashamed to even come out the same year as The Witcher 3. You might wonder why I bring up the The Witcher, but I'll get to that later on this review.
First of all, this game is not an RPG. It is an open world shooter. The dialogue wheel is a joke, deliberately ambiguous as to preserve an illusion of choice. Please do look up youtube videos where mods show actual dialogue. All quests boil down to the same repetitive, mundane cycle. Go somewhere, kill someone, come back with something. Typically, RPGS make these quests meaningful and worth doing by developing likable characters and by having an engaging and interesting plot-line. Fallout 4 does not do that. Not for its side-quests, not for its miscellaneous quests, and worst of all, not for its main quest. Every quest seems uninteresting. I helped the minutemen take back a fort, which involved a massive battle against nature, and it ended with a "huh, thanks. Be sure to help anyone in need. See ya around.". That's disgusting. Not trying to be hyperbolic, but that quest did not bring me a single ounce of joy. It was a chore. I did not feel happy at any point during that entire quest. It was worthless.
The reason this game sold well is because it is Fallout. Not the name, but the world. I see why. I loved Diamond City be an actual city. Shopkeepers hanging out in the bar after hours made the world seem alive. The noodle serving robot which only says one word in Japanese, but can communicate with your robot companions. A baseball enthusiast who has severely misunderstood what baseball is, and other interesting characters such as Hancock and an assaultron merchant who has a computer with a contingency plan for every citizen on her terminal. But it's almost as if Bethesda came up with random, quirky characters on the side. No one fits into your story particularly well. The world and characters are there, but they don't connect.
I will give you an encounter in the game which perfectly summarizes what you will experience throughout the entire game. I stumbled upon a cult of some sort called the "Pillars of the Community". Intrigued, I asked the well-dressed leader to tell me more about it. He went into his office and told me to come on in. I tried talking to the other cultists, but they wouldn't participate in any dialogue, just generic one liners. I went into his office, and it turns out the cult's only purpose was to make me give up my possessions. The cult-leader does not seduce or charm you into joining his cult. He literally tells you to hand over everything you own or to die. You can either start a shootout, give him everything, or threaten him. I threatened him and he told me I wasn't worth the trouble. That was it. That's the encounter, it ended right there. I was free to leave. What a waste of potential. It could have been so much fun convincing other cultists to rise up against their leader. Or maybe If the leader actually offered you something worth-while, and attempted to charm or trick you into joining the cult, that would have been fantastic. But that doesn't happen. There is no interactivity with this world. It's either A) Shoot B) Surrender C) Convince not to shoot. And in every other quest, you will not have the choice to surrender. So your only options are to shoot, or to leave.
The game features multiple companions. I will be frank. That is the only matter in which I felt I had a choice or control in. It was one of the only things in this pseudo-rpg where I could see the impact of my choices. Additionally, the game's flow is inorganic. Instead of side-quests developing on their own as the narrative progresses, such as in Fallout 2, instead, there is a button you can press which literally asks them if they have any work for you. And every single one of those quests has been a fetch-quest. Unbelievable. The world is filled with these. Again, giving the illusion that there is much to do, but actually it's the same quest with just different things to bring back. Mundane.
Unlike a worthwhile RPG like the Witcher, where you have choices, the choices matter and are impactful, the quests are interesting and engaging, and the characters make you care for the main quest. Fallout 4 fails to have any of these qualities. The main story is incredibly boring, even with a few good sets here and there.
I'm nearing the word limit, so let me end with this:
Buy this if you want a basic shooter with cosmetic RPG elements. Otherwise don't buy it. I have never struggled to finish a game before. Only saving grace is the world and some locations+companions. Mediocre. I would not recommend buying this.

W porównaniu z topowymi produkcjami Fallout 4 wygląda jak produkt z muzeum rozrywki elektronicznej. Niestety pod względem narracji nie jest dużo lepiej. RPG elements of the previous games are barely present...if not present at all. They kind of watered it down for people who are new to Fallout so they can broaden their audience, which I get but it kinda ruined it a bit, though not too much. The talking protagonist is actually something I was positively surprised by. Story was interesting enough, although a bit stupid if you ask me. Most of it made sense but you exit the vault looking for your son and you go this long ass way just to find out that it was 60 years ago when they first snatched him, meanwhile you're too busy going around gathering sh*t like adhesive screws and other materials. Other than that no complaints about the story.
Character creation system definitely WAY better than 3 and NV.....way better. The game lacks a serious arsenal of weapons. I don't want to shoot some damn pipe pistols for a 3rd of the game, it's tiring. The new design of old creatures like Mirelurks, Deathclaws or even Super Mutants are also a step up from the last ones. Alien Blaster is THE weakest thing ever, doesn't matter if you upgrade your character to the max, it will always stay/be weak. Side quest for the Minutemen were boring as f*ck and pretty much just annoying to the point where you don't want to talk to Preston Garvey, turn on Radio Freedom or go anywhere near The Castle anymore. About half of the DLCs were decent like Nuka World, Far Harbor and the Wasteland Workshop, the rest was just half assed to be fully honest.....matter of fact the whole game was kinda half assed if you ask me, but it was still worth the money and I played the absolute sh*t out of it, can't wait for Fallout 76, though the online only option leaves me very skeptical.

    3. Weapon customization/upgrading
    4. Some great environment/atmosphere/immersion elements, like the Glowing Sea, or even the little story behind the Boston Mayoral Shelter
    5. Better character appearance customization

    Cons:
    1. Overly combat-centric, which quickly results in an overpowered player character with overpowered weapons that can sweep anything they encounter in the wasteland. Also harms the feasibility of a peaceful-approach play-style that some might want to go for
    2. Factions that are one-dimensional and often seem juvenile (besides the Institute, which was just poorly written). Makes you wish there was a Yes-Man-esque ending option where you didn't have to side with one of them
    3. The lazy and annoying repeatable quests. Gone are the in-depth side quests featuring interesting NPCs, to be replaced by meaningless retrieval or killing-mission quests
    4. Perhaps most seriously of all, the unmistakable shift away from RPG and towards first-person/third-person shooter. The new perk system and getting rid of skills was just the beginning. Your choices are mostly superficial and limited in their impact, besides the obvious choice of selecting whom to side with in the end. Others have gone into more depth about this, so I won't bother repeating more of it here.

Overall, FO4 isn't a terrible game, but it is one that lacks sophistication and heart. It doesn't draw me back to play it again in the same way FO3 and especially FNV did, despite their respective flaws. Bethesda can, and really should, do better.

Fallout 4 leans to the Shooting side of things. It strips down the gameplay from the actual RPG elements and offers a meta-nuclaer shooting gallery which of course keep its charm and gameplay wealth but also feels a little too friendly for the new comers. The Base builder mode is unnecessary, boring and irritating. Unfortunately, overall, there are no steps forward for this Nuclear Holocaust Behemoth of the video games industry. Only steps sideways.
