The game is very dull, boring and unappealing. The RPG Elements are mostly limited to Just YES & NO, Start a mission or Meander a little longer. Basic Story Quests where you have to find your son WELL....! you don't care b/z you are doing more important things like hacking terminals, Collect enemies weapons and customize them OR Listening to an old women who cant talk any more b/z she is tired but will walk miles after that AND Ohhh....! The Old women can see future & Past AND have visions SO why isn't there an option to ask about just the Meaningful thing?

Bethesda published a game called RAGE back in 2011 also post apocalyptic sandbox Style, With Extraordinary Shooting, Excellent Crafting, Fun looting and Collecting stuff. Spiked with a dash of customization. AMAZINGLY that game still looks batter, Fell batter and is still fun to play then Fallout 4.

My issue with the game is that it doesn't bring anything really new or interesting to the franchise. It's just a re-skinned F3/FNV with slightly better graphics. I'm pretty sure they re-used a ton of assets from those two games as well. The story is retarded. The facial animations on the NPCs when they are talking and interacting with you look ridiculous. The same formula over and over again, go here and do this, go here and kill that, go here and rescue these people...blah blah blah. After I got bored I thought, you know what I'll just make a new character and play the villain...nope you can't do it.

For me this game ended up being the same as Star Wars Battlefront in that they both feel like so much is missing and have that training wheel feel to them. I guess many game companies are starting to design their titles fro kids and leaving the older gamers behind and that is why many games are being dumbed down to the point in which they are...just a theory. Any way if anything this is Fallout Lite, less calories and less filling.

I think that really this game deserves more than a 3, but it was such a disappointment im going to give it a bad review. Bethesda needs to know they screwed up.

Some things were added that i personally thought were improvements. Mainly the combat and upgrades to weapons and armor were hugely improved, also the graphics and over all fluidity of the game were better. But that is where the improvements end.

For starters "survival mode" is crap. They took away all of the cool elements of New Vegas hardcore mode and turned everything into bullet sponges. There is zero incentive to play this game on harder difficulties.

Replay value is pretty much nothing. All side quests are one sided with no real consequences for siding with anyone. Also main quest line is boring to replay. The lack of original quests outside the main storyline is unbelievable and possible the lowest amount ever included in fallout history

Writing is by far the worst part. With the exception of the quests in Diamond City this game has abysmal writing and dialogue options. By far the biggest disappointment from this game compared to Fallout NV and Fallout 2, which arguably have some of the best writing in any video game.

Settlements are the last nail in the coffin. Turning it into repetitive minecraftesque garbage.

If New Vegas was your favorite fallout game, you will not like this game after the initial run through. It is not worth paying 60 dollars for. Go buy bloodborne, its cheaper and a way better game. This game has more in common with borderlands than previous games in the series. Bethesda, stop pandering to the lowest common denominator of games. Stop dumbing down your games. Give Fallout back to Obsidian because they are the only ones who can get it right.

But then Bethesda watered down and removed ALL roleplaying elements. Karma system was removed, you can't be evil, the endings are the same it doesn't matter which faction you choose, I can go on.

The graphics are disappointing for a 2015 game, even Skyrim on the PS3 back in 2011 has better graphics than Fallout 4's. Sure it may have better graphics than the previous Fallout games. But compared to previous Bethesda titles and other 2015 games. This was just a disappointment.

None of the characters are interesting. Among 100+ NPCs I can only remember 3-4 of them.

Fallout 4 is the first console game to feature mods... on XBOX ONE and obviously PC. Since Fallout 4's launch Bethesda had worked with Sony to try and get mods to PS4. Sony how ever denied them. I'm not blaming the lack of PS4 mods on Bethesda. This is 100% Sony's fault.

So that's pretty much my review of Fallout 4. A watered down "Roleplaying" game with less content than PC and XBOX ONE users.

Honestly, **** this game. After trying to give it an honest second chance and being *so* excited about the new survival mode... I realized just how lazy the developers were for Fallout 4.

This game is buggy to the point of being borderline unplayable. Survival mode is not playable, unless you really ****ing hate yourself and love constantly backtracking due to crashesbugs. I repeat: if you are a hardcore gamer, DO NOT BOTHER WITH SURVIVAL MODE. See below.

Around the start of the game it's kind of amusing and cute, these funny little bugs happening. And then it stops being cute entirely when you're an hour and a half deep into a mission - one that you couldn't save in that entire time because survival mode is just tacked on and badly designed - and the game crashes. If this had only happened once, I could get over it. After about 15 crashes and 10+ hours of game play lost, I just have no desire to play this game at all.

Next, the settlements. Wow, what can I say about these half coded pieces of tepid garbage. To sum it up - a fantastic concept that apparently never made it past the alpha stage of testing and then was included in the final release. And then, you know, release 3 DLCs for it despite the fact that the core mechanics of the settlements simply do not work. I am not exaggerating. They do not work. Have fun spending 10 hours building a magnificent castle that your buggy settlers will not be able to navigate or use. Oh, and by the way the more you build in your settlements the more your game will crash. YAY! FUN! **SONY ACTUALLY REFUNDED MY MONEY FOR THE FALLOUT 4 WORKSHOP DLCS BECAUSE THEY ARE SO BUGGY AND NON FUNCTIONAL. THEY LITERALLY NEVER EVER EVER REFUND PURCHASES IF YOU DIDNT KNOW. THATS HOW BAD IT IS.**

And that's not even getting into buggy companion quests, buggy vertiberds, a REALLY lame and shallow weapon + armor system (that is made even more lame by the fact all armor you find is useless because youll only ever use power armor 100% of the time), complete removal of the dialogue and choice system (you can either say 'yes' in a nice way, or in a mean way. wow. much rpg.), and the horrible building interface for settlements that have no point to exist other than bolster your already infinite piles of cash.

Just don't bother. I can't even explain my disappointment in this game.

I got the impression that a lot of time and effort was put into making the downtown area grandiose, large scale and overwhelming. Towering dilapidated skyscrapers dot the sky and some are even explorable to a degree. While other areas are barren, nonsensical, quirky or not ideal or logical. Secure locations are abandoned, dilapidated structures are for some reason ideal to live in. Survivors living in remote locations with hostiles all around. Enemy groups with opposing ideals so close they could be considered in the same area. Gunners sharing a rooftop or overpass with Super Mutants, while raiders are just below. There is enough real-estate on the map for these groups to have a bit more room from each other in a more natural way. I feel that this was not done. Repetition also sets in when you finish killing Super mutants and you predict Raiders next, then Gunner will follow, or Synths and then Raiders. The scale and size of the map seems smaller then other Bethesda titles and I believe this is due to having mostly open cells and a lot of assets in a small area. There is nonsensical placement of Power Armor for every 2-5 minute in game walk. I give this aspect 0. as it breaks my suspension of disbelief.

    Story/Writing:
It is a rehash of Fallout 3, Lazy and embarrassing. In all Bethesda's games many things can be fixed by modders from textures to sounds to levelling. The core quest in the game can only be fixed if it is removed or replaced and that will likely not happen. Most of the side quests and Faction quests are tied into the main quest giving no player agency. The player can't choose to evade the quests and all replayability is lost.

    Dialogue:
    Lazy, mediocre, repetitive, insulting.

    NPC's:
Aesthetically they are recognizable though their writing subtracts from this. Lip Sync is an awful mess. Too many NPCs rely on leveled actor lists which leads to repeat faces and generically named characters with no substance or value.

    Combat:
It was improved in some ways, lack of weapon types, ammo types, more defined specialization detracts from this.

    Player Character:
Player character gets its own category as this has always been very important not only in Fallout but also Elder Scrolls. The player having a full back story that plays out throughout the game in a unavoidable way breaks replayability, immersion and player agency.

    Attributes/Skills/Perks:
Attributes seem superficial and only help in getting more caps or better at killing stuff. Skills were removed and perks seem superficial and only help in getting more caps or better at killing stuff.

    Loot:
Bad.The loot in Fallout 4 is 3 sided. Crafting, killing and collecting. These three sides are of a triangle and are always connected, junk is for killing to help you get more junk for crafting which helps you collect things that will help you kill and craft. It's boring and repetitive.

    Voice Acting:
Repetitive, most conversations are based off of the radiant quest and the same lines are heard over and over. Not enough voice diversity, Abernathy guy plays a dozen characters and gets old fast, Male voiced protagonist is embarrassing. The female is good, but having her waste her potential on player voice subtracts from her use in the game. Using Linda Carter in ever Bethesda game is getting really old, please stop, she can't voice act.

    Replayability:
I can't find any, I tried real hard too. Honestly, if the story was ripped from the game and all NPCs were unessential I might give it a try. I can forgive most aspects listed here, but if I find the story insulting and painful what can I do? When I say I find it insulting and painful, I'm not being edgy, I mean it. I feel like I am being spat in the face and kicked in the nuts when it comes to the story and plot.

    Exploration:
It honestly wouldn't be so bad if the game was better balanced and it wasn't a focus on shoot and loot.

    Music:
Stunning and incredible 10/10 Zion is a god of music, however, the radio music is copy paste from Fallout 3 and the lack of effort really shows.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Where do I start.

I guess, I'll start with the new improvements and good things. The shooting is nice, and the graphics are alright at best, but still satisfying. The customisations also pretty good. And that's where the positive points end.

    Next, the bad things. The dialogue is horrible. You have for options, to speak for every conversation, and that's it. I'll give you an example;

Quest Giver: "Please sir, I need help, my daughter is in trouble! Can you go save her from these raiders?"

You: Yes (Yes), Maybe (yes), How about some money (yes), or no (you will still get the quest anyways).

And if you decide to say no, maybe because your busy or something, your character will say something along the lines of this:

"I don't have time for your **** old man." (Remember, he still gives you the quest)

Next, there are no choices. It gives you the illusion of choice, but no real choices are ever made. Even when you beat the game with a faction, all that changes is literally three guards from said faction will hang around Diamond city, and the flags in diamond city will change. THAT'S **** IT.

Next, the voice acting. The guy sounds like a douche so much, and some of the sarcastic choices make me cringe so badly.

Next, there are next to no side quests. Once the main quest is finished, good luck trying to find ANYTHING else to do. The side quests that are there are lackluster, and boring most of the time.

Next, there is no role playing, which is strange for a role playing game. You HAVE to love shaun, your son, even though you've only known him for three minutes. You HAVE to love your wife or husband, whom you have only known for a massive FIVE minutes, before he/she dies. You are forced to have a kid, a wife or husband, which seriously sucks. It takes away roleplaying, as you can't choose your life before the wastes. Also, you are given no time to feel any sort of love or attachment to these two, which also sucks, as they expect you to care for them.

Next, the Minutemen. Hands down, this is the WORST faction in fallout history. They are the goodie two-shoes of the wasteland, and have next to no lore, and their sole purpose of being there is to endorse the settlement building, which brings me to my next point.

Without mods, the settlement building sucks. You can't place things where you want almost all of the time, and there is no real reward in it unless you simply do it for fun.

Next, the loading screens. This game was made in late 2015, on next gen platforms, and on console the loading screens are still long as **** You'll find yourself walking into a building by accident, and actually getting mad, because you now have to wait bout a minute before you can go in, then leave, which is another minute.

Overall, not a good game, but sometimes it can be enjoyable. SOMETIMES.

    Do not buy this game.

Within the first hour, I knew something was wrong, from the absence of Ron Pearlman on narration (his part is nothing more than a News reporter who has nothing of importance to say) and the rushed opening, this game doesn't take a rest for you to allow to enjoy the moment.
Which is really sad, we've not had a Fallout game set before the War. Instead, this prologue is shoved to the side, mostly because it was viable to build hype around the game by saying you can play the pre-war events.
Shortly after waking up, we get some time to breath and explore the damage that the bombs had done.
But straight away, we are thrown into a short battle where we get Power Armour and fight a Deathclaw.

The story remains uninteresting, with most of it being a rehash of the previous game (F3, which already had ideas taken directly from the previous two games), lore-breaking details such as the Kid in a Fridge Quest and the idea of Jet being a pre-war drug.

Not only that, but the dialogue system is a dumbed down, stripped of any complexity and pretty moronic with a voiced protagonist whom feels out of place in the series.
On top of the broken settlement building mechanics, bullet sponging enemies, completely insulting ending and a reuse of radio songs from Fallout 3, and we get one of the biggest problems plaguing the Industry today.

The only good things about this game I can say is that the combat is a lot smoother and the Power Armour customisation is a nice touch.
Other than that, this game is completely useless.

This doesn't even qualify as an RPG let alone a Fallout game.
The game is ripped off from ideas from Fallout 3, the DLC is ripped off from both Modders and Fallout 3 DLC and yet Bethesda have the audacity to charge full price for this game and claim they spent 7 years working on it.
This is one of the biggest insults I've ever had the displeasure of playing and is one of the ugliest releases from the past few years.
I expect this type of crap from EA, but Bethesda, the Company which many regard as being the saviours of the AAA market? No, I find this release completely disgusting.

    Avoid at all costs.

There's no character creating apart from the physical aspects, your character doesn't feel "yours" . There's almost no quest with complex story writing; in general, the script aspect of conversations and general dialogue is POOR by any standards. What i want to express is that Fallout is an RPG, but Fallout 4, in my honest opinion, Is NOT.

I hope they can fix something in any of their DLC's

I had 20 settlements before even reaching the mid point of the game, and by that time I was wasting two hours dealing with all the issues each settlement had, that by the time I was done I just didn't care about the main quest line anymore. Positives:
    - Looks better than the previous entries
    - Combat system got better
    - Crafting is nice

    Negatives:
    - Performance is bad, unoptimized
    - Uninspiring story
    - Uninspiring main characters
    - Factions are just plain boring
    - Dumbed down in nearly every aspect

Not a bad game on its own but as a Fallout game it is not something I would ever recommend.

Though games like Skyrim might get away with it, due to the richness of the setting, Fallout 4 falls short, and fast, into a futile repetitive exercise of killing, fetching and modding with no discernible meaning nor deep objective, the Fallout setting just seems coincidental to this.

Bethesda does not yet understand, that what made Fallout a great franchise was it's capacity of turning the setting into a story. Instead of just putting content for the sake of it, when developing, the priority should be on exploring the relations of power between communities that have survived, and get aspects, social, economical, even philosophical into the game, that's the way you create immersion. But with this game everything remains on the surface, there is no deep engagement, only inconsequential actions and a less than engaging main plot.

If you are looking for a meaningful story, as in previous Fallout releases, this is not your game.

Unknowing that everyone has psychic powers the entire town teleports through the door and guns me down. Following a load screen I respawn in the same place with everyone shooting me I die again. This repeats until eventually my PS4 crashes and I'm forced to start the game from scratch. So far on my second character and much further into the game nothing game breaking has happened yet but I feel like I have to be very careful which is not a problem I should be having.

So Fallout 4 is a buggy mess and I would have awarded a higher score if it hadn't been however, probably not that much higher as the game itself isn't really very good.

The game has a very stupid and intrusive 'government took ma be-beh' storyline. The worst thing about this is every time you speak with an NPC your character insists on telling them something that you already know and don't care about for the entire game.

Dialogue choices that don't matter is something that really annoys me about modern games and Fallout 4 does it all the time which is a massive problem for an RPG with so many of them.

The game world is massive and exploring it is probably the most fun thing to do in the game. There are loads of missions and side quests but unfortunately everything you do feels like busy work. There is so much busy work in Fallout 4 I had to quit my job in real life just to figure out how base building works as there is no real tutorial or explanation for it in the game.

The combat aspect is weak. Shooting is not satisfying. You don't really feel like your hitting anything unless you use VATS which is essential when the dumb enemy AI just runs at you and there's nothing you can do about it.

Far too much inventory management, constantly having to drop items because I'm over my equip burden. Ultimately though it's all the load screens which really puts me off. Dying, fast travel, going into buildings. Every few seconds a load screen is there to break the immersion and illusion of the open world.

Fallout 4 just looks and feels old, in it's bland missions, uninspired level design and creaky game engine. Some people may be able look past these flaws and throw themselves into all the busy work. I am not one of them.

The shooting is extremely imprecise, as I often just resorted to walking up to whatever enemy and punching them in the face. I have hit several bugs, such as items disappearing right in front of me, NPCs stop talking in mid sentence for no reason, and some clipping issues. I have been told that they dumbed down a lot of the mechanics from previous games, but after my experience with this one, I really don't want to go back and play other games in the series. After a while, I lost confidence in the game as I was always expecting things to break. I've been forced to reload old saves in order to avoid critical game breaks, resulting in me losing hours of game play and forcing me to backtrack character progress and story missions + conversations. It is as fun as it sounds.
I understand that on PC there are workarounds available (where you can use various console commands to skip missions or scripts) but playing on console, you are basically stuck.

Looking at what Bethesda has planned for us, you get Fallout 3 with improved graphics and a non-interesting story that fails to motivate you. You will most likely get lost in a myriad of side quests that are even more boring. The characters you encounter are somewhat charming and has strong personalities, but fail to stick to your mind. I have better memories of Mass Effect 1 followers and that was how many years ago?

The news are a crafting system that will force you to collect junk, speedtravel back to base, drop junk, collect junk. Rince and repeat, over and over again.
There is also an level editor where you can build houses and defences. This editor is no exception to the poor design which the game reeks of. Anyone that have used any level editor (Unreal, Hammer) will probably rip their hair trying to control this mess included in Fallout 4. Seriously, a first person build editor? WTF. At least make the walls snap in a favourable way, please.

There are no longer multiple ways to finish most quests, because every quest is "Go here and kill this". The game no longer has skills or traits, instead they've "streamlined" all the rpg elements away, and all that is left is a game that is no longer an rpg at all. There is now only one build, and that is a combat oriented one. It honestly feels more like a poorly made clone falling somewhere between the mass effect and borderlands series. This is not a good thing. Stay far away unless all you are interested in is shooting things and looting locations. There is no payoff at all for your actions in this very shallow playground of a game. It did accomplish one good thing by making me want to replay New Vegas! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Fallout 4 is the latest "Roleplaying" game from Bethesda, known for creating The Elder Scrolls, an actual roleplaying series. And buying the Fallout series just to downgrade it.

First of all, Fallout 3 and NV was amazing, I have over 200+ hours on those games. In Fallout 4 I had to force myself to play it for 60 hours. This game is so dull and boring, well let's just start the review.

    1. The Story
The story is so predictable and repetitive. It has the same concept that previous Fallout games did. Find someone or something. The only difference is that those stories wasn't full of clichés. So I'm gonna sum up the story right now:
    1. Exit a vault
    2. Find your son
    3. Find some s**t in order to find your son
    4. Get help from different factions
    5. Your son turns out to be the leader of the bad guys faction (Original, I know)

    2. The graphics and audio
The graphics and audio in Fallout 4 has to the worst of last year, seriously it looks like a 2011 game. Audio doesn't even match up with what you walk or run on. The only good audio is Dogmeat's.

    3. The characters
All the characters and companions in this game are either from previous game, or they have a backstory that you honestly don't care about.

    4. The game world
Since this is an open world game you expect hours worth of quests and locations, right? Well there are 70% less quests and locations than in previous Bethesda titles, like Skyrim or Fallout 3. You'll just end up going to the same location for the same repetitive quests give to you by faction leaders over and over and over.

    5. Almost no RPG elements
That's right, you read that right. Almost no RPG elements. They were either removed or watered down since the last game. Let's list them all because I have nothing better to do.

    1. The dialogue system: The dialogue system has suffered a huge downgrade since the previous games. Remember how you could select from a bunch of dialogue options and use your skills? Well in Fallout 4 it has been downgraded to 4 options.
    Yes
    No
    Sarcastic
    Bye
    2. The Karma system: The Karma system from FO3 and NV has been removed. So you can just go around stealing and kill everyone you see without being punished.
    3. Skills: Skills have been removed and have been replaced with perks. Each time you level up you can chose from different perks.

    6: The HUD
The HUD in Fallout 4 is so badly make, the green color makes you want to puke. And the power armor HUD will give you a headache. Sure you can change it by going to the options, but do you really want to spend time to chose which color you want the HUD to be?

    7. The game is way too easy.
Even on Hard difficulty the game is too easy. You get power armor in the first 20- 30 minutes of the game, plus a minigun. From there you can just buy new weapons and armor by using exploits. Stimpaks and Rad-Aways are also too easy to find. I remember in Fallout 3 and NV when I found almost no Stimpaks and Rad-Aways. I Fallout 4 you find them in almost every location.

    8. The Power Armor
Remember how in FO3 and NV you found no power armor untill you reach a high level or start a quest that requires you to be high level? Well, as I said before you now find it in the first 20-30 minutes of the game. Taking away that epic feeling of finally entering a set of power armor.

Well, I gues that's all. I really don't recommend this game if you own a PS3, PC or XBOX 360. Because you can just buy FO3 and NV on those systems. BUT! If you don't own those systems, then I guess you can buy this. Just be ready to be disappointed

Also worth noting that the emphasis is very much on combat, so if you enjoyed the RPG element of past Fallout games...this isn't for you!

Theres also a real problem with exploration...theres way too many boarded up houses that cant be accessed at all, dungeons that are one room, and Bethesda really missed an oppurtunity to add a Capitol Wasteland DLC. (in fact the DLC for Fallout 4 is lazy and short, now we know why the season pass was so cheap at launch)

Such a huge let down given how good 3 and NV were, we waited years for this and it just doesn't measure up to the high bar set by past Fallout games.

So basically I knew this was just going to be another Bethesda game of trecking across the map to kill one thing and then coming back and getting the reward and then just grinding everything out with no purpose. I had this trouble with Skyrim as well where I found that there was far too much to do to the point where the side quests are well over 10 times the size of the main quest and they just spiral out into this endless void. But it's not worth it at all. All the characters are boring and they all sound depressed or just poorly voiced so I just don't care about them at all. Every quest is just so much effort and there's no final boss or thing to work towards. I personally prefer a game I can beat in about 40 hours and be satisfied with. This game cannot be beaten and so I just cannot be arsed to play it for 60 hours and try and immerse myself in a boring world. Expand

I'm a big fan of the Fallout Saga and this title has a scarcity of Fallout features such as:
    - a deep conversation system which has been simplified to the maximum... Oh if you didn't notice a console controller has FOUR BUTTONS then... why don't we put ONLY FOUR DIFFERENT ANSWERS ? That must have been the **** they were thinking when creating that conver system. And by chance those answers are divided in : evil, good, neutral and funny. We have lost a lot of depth in the development of story because of that.

    - The game play has been improved... but now this video game looks like a Call of Duty, losing the strategy element , being possible to fade the enemies only with our fire power. You can argue this by saying that the main character is an ex soldier so he's skilled with weapons, and that leads to the next point...

    - An ARPG must make feel the player to be part of the story by giving the player a huge fan of possibilities to personalize the experience. But in this game we are forced to play with a character that has an own story ( SPOILER: he's an ex soldier of the US army ) which eliminates a lot of role from our experience, not as the other video games in which you were someone building your story step by step, discovering who you were.

    - The character has voice which personally I think it's horrible since this is supposed to be an ARPG .

    - SO MANY BUGS: disappearing characters, if it's in the night and you are inside a building everything is illuminated which makes no sense, and so on.

    - TOO EASY : in Fallout video games the pinacle of experience was getting a power armor which was the moment you could feel the power flowing your veins , but in this game you are getting the power armor in the FIRST MISSION which makes the video game less enjoyable since you are the **** boss since the first moment. The fusion batteries are no excuse because there are loads of them and you never need to get out of the armor.
Almost the same thing happens with the Fatman.

    - ANIMATIONS : it looks like you are talking to robots , and this isn't anything new in the saga, but ffs this is a 2015 video game, they could have worked on that a bit. It's funny when you are talking to a character and it turns its back on you.

CONCLUSION: If you are not a Fallout fan and want a light entrance to ARPG genre this is a good option, but if you are a Fallout fan , you can't approve this because it could lead to the deterioration of the saga.

But it gets boring quickly. You talk to people and they tell you to go to such location and get a certain item or clear a number of enemies. This is basically the whole game. Even during end-game quests, you go to a location and kill all the bad guys. The game occasionally gives you the option of peaceful resolution but mostly you are forced to kill every moving thing. This gets really boring and really brakes immersion.

The game has instances of severe framerate drops on the ps4.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is the first game that has prompted me to create a meta critic account to provide a review for other users. The game is a serious disappointment given the time Bethesda have had to develop it. Many of the RPG elements that made the Fallout series great have been discarded or even further dumbed down and the game plays like an open world shooter. Unfortunately, it's not a very good shooter either.

    Positives
Gear customisation and crafting. Pretty cool feature and led to some fun self-made scavenger hunts.
Settlement building. Great potential but poorly executed (see negatives). Adds a world building element that makes sense in a post-apocalyptic setting.
Companions. Diverse range of engaging companions.
Environment - Post-nuclear Boston is an engaging sandbox to explore.

    Negatives
Character building - a pretty basic RPG staple and an aspect of previous Fallout games I loved.
In Fallout 4, no investment in character building is required. There is no skill system with level upgrades now spent on attribute upgrades and a limited range of perks. There is also no level cap. Basically this means that your character is now infinitely upgradable to a heroic every-man. Linking the perks to SPECIAL attributes is an interesting idea but rendered redundant by the lack of level cap. Overall, will ultimately hurt replayability of the game.

Graphics. Graphics look like Fallout 3 remastered and anyone expecting next-gen graphics in the game will be highly disappointed. On its own not a major drawback but if you're going to gut the RPG aspects of the game and turn out a glorified shooter, then, sorry, graphics matter.

Insipid storytelling. Main quest is ripped off from Fallout 3 and while there are numerous side quest and factional quest threads, these consist mainly of travel to location, kill enemies / retrieve item, return to base. Seriously could care less choosing between Faction A/B/C/D as there is little consequence to player decisions for most of the game.
Settlement building. Once the initial novelty of playing with the crafting system is done with, there is little motivation to actually want to continue. The UI is clunky and constructs mesh poorly with the surrounding environment. There is little to no interaction possible with settlers apart from demanding resources or thanking you for killing enemies.
NPC interaction - There's supposedly over a 100,000 lines of dialog in the game, but have yet to come across any that is particularly interesting or engaging yet. For the most part human NPC's are hollow, emotionless, 2-D cardboard cutouts and provide the same level of interaction and motivation as talking to robots. This may be also partly due to the terrible character animation.
Companion AI - worse than enemy AI which hasn't improved at all from FO3. Was a minor annoyance initially, but after 40+hrs in, its just tedious.
Challenge - The only challenge to be found in the game is fighting and killing things. There's no engaging scavenger hunts, puzzles, quests that demand non-violent resolution. Providing power armor with a scripted death claw killing at the start of the game was a serious misstep. It also takes away a lot of the sense of vulnerability prevalent in the early stages of other Fallout games. The game took on a familiar "dungeon grind" vibe fairly quickly.

Overall, the game is not terrible but very very average. Cannot understand at all the generally positive consensus review from so-called professional critics.
Save your money until this one is in the cheap bins.

This game is just so bad in every department. And Bethesda actually succeeded in dumbing down their dumbed down games even more. Everything is just bad or awful - the writing, graphics, art design, voice acting, quest design, story/writing, mechanics, user interface EVERYTHING are just AWFUL. Stay away at all costs and save your money for a decent game.

    On to Gameplay
the settlement building mechanic seems to have been lazily added last minute and gives nothing but headaches and horrible green graphic induced nausea. Do not believe the positive reviews. I see alot of 9 and 10 ratings with people saying they just started the game and are already hooked. trust me once you play this game for 10+ hours (or god forbid, attempt to replay with another character) you will realize how lame this game actually is. Fallout 4 controls are still way too clunky to be a good First person shooter and unfortunately bethesda has removed all the parts that classified fallout as a (light) RPG.

the minecraft experiment is a huge flop.
    no skills is a flop.
accessibility and streamlining is a flop.
the quests and writing are flops.
the land is empty and full of repetitive enemies and objectives.
    zero need for replay.
    zero rpg mechanics.
and, lots of typical beth-tastic, shoulder-shrugging, non-caring bugs and glitches.

there is almost ZERO meaningful content OF ANY KIND in this game. you will play and a few hours later realize you've wasted your time for a few minor examples of "fun."

i would have NEVER thought what began with morrowind (for me) would end in this hack game that proves beth doesn't care about their products anymore.

unfortunately, there are still many foolish gamers who think this OBVIOUS piece of trash is worthy of release.

the sheeple masses will flock, but, hopefully all of us intelligent gamers who care about the industry and rpg's specifically will vocally DENY the next elder scrolls sham.

it is guaranteed to be the most casual, simple, naive and childish game by beth ever.

The latest trend in game sequels is something called streamlining. You take a game that was successful by virtue of its deep and engrossing gameplay, and in an effort to make it 'more accessible' to the sort of fringe case gibbering idiots who didn't buy the last installment, you remove all of the complexity that led to the success of the original.

-The voice acting was a cool addition but limited the dialogue options. Also, if you quicksave right before a charisma attempt, you'll notice that whether you fail or not, the character's delivery is EXACTLY the same.

-The pathing of enemy AI is very poor. By that, I mean that I can jump back and forth over a 2 foot guard rail and a deathclaw will be forced to run all the way around instead of just hopping over
    .
-Companions are a huge PITA and will often walk right in front of you as you're throwing a grenade or taking a stealthy shot from afar.

    - Radio is boring. ThreeDog, or even Mr. New Vegas from previous games are much better than Travis,

-The new settlements were fun and contributed to at least half of my playtime, but once the release hype faded, I realized I was playing a souped up Farmville. A majority of gameplay is reduced to filling up on junk, fast traveling home and repeating.

-No Soul. The time I left vault 101 in Fallout 3, Bethesda had already taken me on a magic carpet ride of emotions. From birth, my birthday party, my first crush, dealing with bullies, and ultimately leaving the shelter, by the time the intro was over, I had already established the fundamentals of my character’s identity. Fallout 4 takes that level of character building and attachment to narrative and flushes it down the toilet. I found myself completely unmoved by the elimination of specific main characters, and change of circumstances because I had not been given a reason to care. In Fallout 3 I wanted so badly for my girlfriend (Amata) to follow me into the wasteland, and felt so sad that she didn’t want to leave with me.

No Karma Sytem -My biggest complaint about Fallout 4 in general was the removal of the Karma system. The karma system was exchanged for a faction system in New Vegas. Many of us hoped that maybe it was just an Obsidian thing and that as soon as Bethesda made a new Fallout that the Karma system would make its triumphant return. Unfortunately this was not the case. In fact when trying to just be evil in Fallout 4 there were absolutely no repercussions other than angry NPCs. In the main quest, it is impossible to be a bad guy. No matter what you say the plot moves forward the same way with little to no difference had you chose the ‘nice guy’ dialogue options. I’m not saying that this is a deal breaker for me, but I believe it’s a big talking point for those who really loved the ‘play your own way’ aspects of Bethesda games.

    - Graphic looks outdated but this is less important than story / quests or gameplay.

    Positve:

+Gameplay. While the game did leave me with a bad taste in my mouth, I can say that I really enjoyed flying over enemies, landing on them and proceeding to decapitate some fools with my Chinese officer's sword. Also, the shooting quality was a huge step up from past games.

+The weapon upgrade system is nice However, there isn't as much available for armor

I started playing the Fallout series with Fallout 3 on PS3, and I loved it. It got me into the Elder Scrolls games too, and I played both Oblivion and Skyrim. I bought New Vegas, loved it and played the hell out of it. I'm now playing Fallout 4, and to be honest its not a good game, maybe a "OK" game but very bad a Fallout 4 game.i give 4 out of 10 im very dissapointed :( *sniff*

Instead you get scripted set pieces and events that happen based on your characters actions. Lack of variation in the environment; Every area looks similar to one other aside from buildings but there are some exceptions like the Glowing Sea or Boston Common. The factions present in the game, Bethesda tried their best to make them varying but they are all pretty much after the same goals. Ironically Fallout 4 actually left me feeling no connection to the Commonwealth as the choices I made neither changed the map, territory of certain factions or the weather. The only thing that actually changed was settlements. Settlements, limitless simple tasks to gain area to craft and rest but that's pretty much it. In earlier games like Fallout New Vegas if you were to adventure into the open you would stumble on an interesting scene or battle however in Fallout 4 this is more rare and more likely you will be attacked by a legendary creature before you actually got to see something interesting. The lack of weapons and clothing should also be noted as most of the weapons present in the game is a type of pistol; The actual interesting weapons such as Laser Guns or Energy Weapons are rare and either look unattractive sound annoying or both. The assault and combat rifles look bland and dull, Few interesting or varying weapons, which is a real deal-breaker for me. Combat actually feels devolved from the last games and less immersive. Armors usually range from small sets of items that you can equip on your body but there doesn't seem to be any variation aside from color or material and the cool looking glowish or flamed clothing in no where to be found. Cloth is awful on it's own so lets not go into that cause of lack of casual or modern attire, lack of any powerful combat armor that doesn't look like a robot, lack of attractive faction attire. You run out of ammo very fast and need to constantly switch weapons or find some. Mods do not turn the game into a new experience the most mods can do is create interesting new weapons and settlements but that's about it. A.I mods are decent but could be better as followers disappear and all environment mods due is add vegetation. Most mods require some type of DLC to work and Sony refuses to allow any real changes to come to this already short lived game. Fallout 4 is immensely boring and the developers do little to change this throughout your "journey" through the Commonwealth you will kill, fight, eat, sleep, die, help and that's it the main story line can be captivating some times but falls to certain cliches like "you must have x amount of x to complete this quest. Some characters are likable but other annoy the hell out of you and make you want to kill them. Fallout 4 also does a horrible job of "splitting the story" as in creating your own arcs or alternate missions cause these only include help the x settlement defend x OVER and OVER. Or go fetch x from x! it's mediocre to it's core what we wanted was some epic adventure story with awesome enemies and weapons we did not get this. Fallout 4 could have done more to improve the game like add more weapons and perks but they choose not to. The devs failure to innovate outside of DLC has dramatically reduced Fallout 4's replay value. Certain situations where you should be able to intervene are not present and instead you are given simple scripted events like help x fight x! It is a disappointment to say the least. I guess when I was playing the Vanilla version of this game completely mod-free the promise of reward and adventure kept me going and kept me curious but now I've realized what a truly empty experience it is.

In fact, that seems to be the main point of the game. Collect trash, and build and maintain settlements all over the map.

The graphics are very sub-par, so is the music/soundtrack. I was surprised how poor the game looked. Not much of a step up from Fallout 3. Controls are super clunky on PS4. I had the hardest time aiming and targeting.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have restarted my game for the third time yesterday. The first time, it was because a key NPC had just disappeared, yesterday I just lost the ability to crouch. I decided to start all over again, in a kind of hopeful way - maybe if I went back to square one, I would minimize the risk of bugs or something. And then I was hit by the bug where you're stuck right out of the pod until you restart your console.

So, yeah, even by Bethesda standards, this is painful. I've had buggy saves in their RPGs before, but the worst that had happened was to have a secondary quest I couldn't finish in Skyrim. Never anything this terminal and annoying. And I'm not mentioning all the bugs I managed to work around: crash to PS4 home when changing Piper's weapon, and so on.

Then, there's what Bethesda have done with Fallout, and that's worse than any technical glitch.

I can't stand the dialog system. I used to love it in the old Fallout games, and Planescape: Torment, when you had pretty much half a screen of dialogue options to read, and in certain cases having to be real careful about what you picked. The new system is just risk-free, over simplified nonsense.

Cardboard cutout characters, complete lack of substance in their backgrounds...

It just doesn't feel like a RPG any more. I miss my drug-addicted prizefighter from Fallout 2, a guy who had amassed terrible karma before setting on the path of redemption. That guy had a story, that guy had a style of his own, that guy was FUN. He was utterly rubbish at many things, he had to give up on some parts of the game because of that, and he felt real.

This guy I'm playing in Fallout 4 can just do everything, and he can do it very well. He's neither a beacon of hope leading a rebellion, nor the scourge of the wasteland terrorizing settlements. He's just an asshat who tinkers in his shed and just happens to own 4 power armours and 3 Fat Men despite having been outside the vault for a week or so.

I miss the quests from the old Fallout games where you could kill a guy subtly by tampering with his heart medication, rather than HAVING to blow his brains out with a shotgun.
    (Spoilers ahead)

The bit in the Combat Zone is, for me, very representative of the turn that Bethesda has taken. In an old Fallout game, you could have probably done any of the following:
    1. Wait for a fight night to rob the betting money
    2. Enter the cage yourself and become the local champion
    3. Bet on any fighter to rake in some caps
    4. Buy out one the fighter to have as a companion
    and probably more.

In Fallout 4, well, none of that. You're in a place, where there are other people. Therefore you will fight, and kill them all, and loot them to get back to base and continue building your glorified shed. Woohoo.

It's a decent shooter, despite the glitchy stuff. The modding mechanism on weapons is rather fun, and as usual the random exploration of places is by far the most exciting element of the game.

But it's jut not a Fallout game any more, and it's not really an RPG either.

Technically, it's hard to believe that this game comes from the same generation of development as Witcher 3. It's a poor game and I can't understand why it's getting such rave reviews from the professional critics.

A real nuclear disaster would be more fun. Save yourself 50 quid.

Anyways - long story short. You're better off sticking with Skyrim until mods begin to roll out for Fallout 4. It's good in it's current state but.. Isn't exactly worth the price as of now. A huge let down from all the hype, learn your lesson - don't get excited for a game, no matter who the developers are. I just hope this isn't the future of Bethesda Game Studios games. To me Fallout 4 is like stabbing myself in the leg and trying to convince myself it feels fine.

(Copy and pasted stuff from my Steam review.)
    - It's a half/half game, it's good and bad. Story is horrible - gameplay is good. Personal character is horrible - NPCs are good. RPG is gone - shooter takes its place. To me this game feels like a spin-off of Fallout, kind of similiar to how FNV is to F3. There's a lot wrong but it makes up for with various aspects. Lore is once again messed up, it honestly doesn't even feel like a Fallout game if it weren't for the Deathclaws and BoS, those are the only two things that make F4 feel like Fallout. No player freedom like we were given in previous games, referring to TES and Fallout, we obviously have the freedom to roam around the wasteland but other than that it's nothing.

    - This is less of a RPG game and more of an open-world shooter. Bethesda wanted to do new and innovative stuff, while they accomplished most of it they failed to keep true to what the game is. The one thing they failed exceptionally at was the dialogue system, it fails to do what even other studios failed at. Voice acting is alright but doesn't fit in - and that isn't me being a nostalgic silent protagonist, it just truly doesn't work. Let me give an example, you can join whatever faction you want right, true. When you join the BoS you're a tough militaristic and devoted soldier to the BoS and their tenets. However when you're roaming the wasteland searching for your damn son you're a father figure and continue to act as such. In addition you can join the Minuteman and other factions - all of which your character acts accordingly. Getting the picture? One second you act like a loyal soldier, the next you're a father, then you're a passive smuggling rebel. It just flows so awkwardly. To go back to the system itself - like I said - it fails horribly. Yes, No, Maybe, Info/Sarcastic. What is this BGS? What the hell do you call that? Screw it, in the end it doesn't even matter because all of them mean "yes" anyways.

    - No choices, no consequences, nothing that made Fallout great is in Fallout 4.

    - Back on mods though, BGS in it's entirety SHOULD NOT rely on modders to make their games good. It's no wonder they're making mods available across all platforms, it makes sense now. They feel they're allowed to half-ass the games now because we modders will fix it and make it better, therefore allowing them to slack off. I'm still waiting for their plans to return to paid-mods, I can see it now it'll be with Fallout 4. But not going to relight a fire, on to something else.

    - For some reason I'll put the story here. It's bad. It doesn't even feel like any thought went into it, it's the exact same as Fallout 3 except the roles are reversed. Nearly the same god damn thing. You leave the Vault, go to a large wasteland city, find people to help, continue searching, find someone that knows something about where your goal is, convince them to help, meet your goal and find out that they're really the leader of something massive. Done, bam. Hell, I enjoyed a CoD series more than this, dafuq? Now after the aforementioned story you go on to faction stories and whom to support. FACTION STORIES HAVE ONLY TWO MAIN QUESTS. ALL OF WHICH ARE THE SAME. And that's it. That's Fallout 4. Alright, alright - I forgot to mention that almost all missions in between the beginning from the end are filler side op missions, get this, kill them, repeat. If you thought Skyrim was bad then you're in for a surprise when it comes to this. There is hardly ANY side missions. Yes I know the side op missions I just mentioned are actually called side missions and are considered missions themselves but that doesn't cut it, that's just **** Those side op missions belong in the misc missions not a mission themselves. I understand that not all missions can be long and drawn out quests that are their own entire story, there needs to be a balance between the two, Fallout 4/BGS just didn't do that. The misc missions far over-number the amount of actual missions. And it just doesn't work that way. Nothing is fun about it, hell you don't even go to new places they send you back to the same locations.

Remember this is only a partial review of notable sections from my actual Steam review, so things are a little out of order and may not totally make sense.

    1. Story. Very linear and illogical. As you go further the characters become less interesting and badly written, it seems that the devs just got lazy at some point. Ending just sucked. I got 30 seconds trailer that is the same for all variants. No more Roy Perlman in the end. No comment about the dialogues.
    2. Gameplay. Quite good, I must say. Shooting is fun and enjoyable, new VATS version is interesting and more logical for a 3d game dynamics. Interface didn't cause any trouble too6 though it's usable only on consoles.
    3. RPG Basics. None, they do not exist in this game. Black Ops 2 has more options and endings.
    4. Graphics. Satisfying for a console version. Din't like the "fog" in the buildings. Also there are some typical Bethesda bugs, such as missing textures, 3d models, or just artifacts.
    5. Music and audio. Amazingly done. No minuses at all.

To sum up. Fallout 4 is a very poorly done game. It is a major setback in the series, that got to much hype thanks to the professional marketing of Bethesda. As for me, remove the word "Fallout" from the title and the game will be 8/10 (name it "Rage 2" for example). But as for Fallout series game, it is a very bad joke.

I was more concerned about the core experience and it did not deliver in any way.
-Terrible UI, (Menus for Quests, Inventory, Stats, completely counter intuitive)
-Terrible Writing, (i didn't know it was possible to have no subtlety nor humor simultaneously)
-No options within story line, pick faction that's it (dialog options are superficial, you are told what to do)
-Map is slapped together carelessly(i.e. settlements of independent farmers adjacent raider and mutant camps, literally across the street from each other)
-Settlement scrapping, building, settlers, it's all pretty messy (it doesn't really belong in Fallout, is very unintuitive, and is little more than a set of chores if you decide to do it)
-Skill System is a huge step backwards(easily could have been improved in design stages)
-Weapons, armor, loot is lackluster(few unique skins, "legendary" items feel random)
-Voiced Protagonist is for unimaginative people who don't know how to/don't like to read

I don't want to bash Bethesda. Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Skyrim are all past favorites of mine, but this doesn't feel like it's from the same developer and needs the criticism. It feels dumbed-down for in an attempt to market to casual FPS players. Whether or not they meant to do this is up for debate but it's insulting to Fallout fans if intended.

For me Fallout 1&2 is THE FALLOUT. I know time has passed and things have changed, but Fallout 4 didn't live up to its expectations, by far.
Also, its cover msses the sentence "A post-apocalyptic role-playing game", and by playing the gam now I understand why.
Fallout 4 is not an RPG. It is an FPS with extended character features, and additional base-build simulation. If it was an RPG, I would feel at least a little sympathy with my character, the choices it makes, and the cause it fights for. FO4 does not give you the occasion, because the story itself is nearly similar as FO3: child got kidnapped, family reunion, make a better tomorrow blah blah blah.... I am sick of this positive feels **** And with the side-quests and all you still cannot bury yourself with the history and lore, that a proper RPG would offer, because the game lacks conversations. The lore and history is shallow as a grave in the desert near Vegas. To sum the gameplay up: you go somewhere, kill badguys, go back, get xp, and after a while you get to the end. After 4 hours I came to a point that I dont care about my kid and lets go adventuring, but adventuring is not as fun as it should be. It is the same as FO3. Can you not think about adding something to that? Dear Bethesda: How could you trash out those awesome and long conversations and funny stories FO2 had to offer, how could this decision pass the board considering this would be a RPG?!
Make less story, make more additional content? Like for example, scavenge all the stuff you come across and make more stuff you get from a lot of stuff? I felt like a crazy homeless guy killing raiders while looting coffee mugs, typewriters instead of weapons and armor! WTF?! NO! I dont want to build a settlement, I want the environment to change itself according to my actions I do in the wasteland! It is 2015 forchristssake! I spent at least 2hours per day scrapping and calculating free room in my backpack. Weapon addons are also a chore. Althoug enemies with the worst guns can still gun you down without significant effort, you with the upgraded gun, simply cannot aim that well, so as an FPS the game fails to deliver.
Character development is also dumbed down to a level that it is more like a cabaret than a serious commitment.
Graphics: This is better be a joke. Close to no shadows, low res environments, landscapevisual range drawing and character/house modeling resembles games from 2010. This game was developed since 2009. By comparison Destiny had a completely new graphics engine and a whole new world to develop from scratch and during a same pariod. PS4 gameplay show stuttering,, models are caught in the environment, AI hears my footsteps between levels and tries to shoot mee through the wall, but it kills itself instead with a molotov coctail...(AI is close to non-existent, these are the dumbest enemies ever).
And I could go on and on and on what is wrong with the game. I was playing it just because I didn't believe that it could be this bad, but sadly it is.

I feel myself cheated, as a Fallout fan. This game should not be called Fallout, but something else, that I cannot link to this marvelous franchise. For the younger generation, who have no idea about a real storytelling and have no experience or whatsoever regarding Fallout, this should be an average game. I am really hoping that Bethesda comes to its senses and realizes that this is not the way a post-apocalyptic RPG should be like.
The only thing FO4 can do to make me feel happy, is that if I sell it.

As a last thought, I am just curious that why did Bethesda alter the gametype this much? Because of financial reasons? Because simpler games sell better? Because people dont want to be lost in a sandbox? Because people want instant fun, rather than a longer plot to unwrap itself? Because single player games dont sell that good? I just simply dont understand.

It's absolute garbage; Bethesda should be ashamed.

As a kid I used to play Morrowind on the PC, Watching your modding community flourish around the Construction Set was beautiful. The game itself didn't need character narration; the game was smooth, the characters were well thought out (Vivec, Dagoth Ur still bring a smile to my minds eye), There was a massive depth to your plot back then it seemed. I could depend on dropping into this RPG for hours at a time; if even just to play around with different cheats or spells for sillies. ( or even better mods from the community)
With Fallout 4 . . . on Survival. . . I hope you realize your engine's bugs crash the game every 30m - 2 hrs consistently right? yet the game of the year edition came out and i see no updates fixing these issues. . . seemingly you want everyone seeing a loading screen (laments; fast traveling in lower difficulty with a smaller loot tree)
every 30 min or the game will crash due to zone renderings, or any # of other immersion breaking issues.
( i have had cars thrown into me by companions instantly killing me, even discovered running into said cars sitting still can be fatal. . .)
I am sure every player has noticed falling cars from highways and other needless animations that bug up the engine, when all we did was max-craft our character to run fast through the zones (because minutemen) and here we are, un-immersed, probably broke due to the expansions/skins, and nothing to really show for it except our Bethesda Fandom. . . & all the aforementioned hours spent in a broken game you refuse to spend any time(or $) fixing . . . despite how much money we have literally just thrown at you.
I can't even fathom how much you probably make off these ripoff's you call creations in your club but it is downright despicable how you went from a Construction Set to a Creation Club. . .
& you think your better than EA. . . Tsk, tsk.

Watching the hype following your latest presentation at E3 I am feeling all sorts of deja vu when compared to f4's hype.
I am not enthused, I am not excited.
I am mildly disgusted and sad to see a great company brought so low by it's shareholder greed.

Until you start acting more like Cd Projekt Red
(you know a responsible game developer that keeps it's audience in mind, doesn't give in to corporate greed, and seemingly loves doing what it set out to do in the first place; creating)

The minute I saw this game trailer months ago I immediately knew I wasn't going to buy it. Why? Because it looked TERRIBLE graphically. YES! Terrible graphically! Call me spoiled but I expected much better in 2015. I love the Elder Scrolls (I've played Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim and loved them all), one of the best fantasy franchises of all time, and I played both Fallout 3 and New Vegas and loved it;. In 2008. Bethesda dropped the ball big time and the only reason anyone would positively review the game is because they're in the first stage of grief: DENIAL.

"It's not that bad... the game I waited for 7 years for, couldn't possibly be this bad... well, it's buggy and looks terrible but, you know what? We can expect that? Graphics and bugs are normal in all Bethesda titles despite them being almost unique in this consistent output of crap. So what if graphics look like they're from 2007 when even small budget studios produce better product, quicker?"

"Oh, but graphics aren't the most important part of a game." Right, but they are important and in 2015 when 95% of other AAA games have perfect frame rates on spectacular graphics while this game is using a 10 year old Gamebryo engine, yeah, no, stop making excuses.

Again, this game would be great, as Fallout New Vegas was in 2008.

But this is 2015. And I went and played it on my friend's PS4. It looked AWFUL. Clumsy, the animations were off, and the gameplay wasn't fun, and it was completely NON-IMMERSIVE. The lip syncing was so bad it was almost like I was playing a bad joke. And then reused animations from Skyrim? The jerky animations done in 3D Studio Max? I played for four hours before just shutting it off. Then I played it again the next week, for another couple of hours and still couldn't forgive the graphics, so much so that the gameplay was just... blah. It didn't feel like it was a living breathing world at all.

Honestly, the only reason this game made almost a billion dollars was just clever marketing hype. And in saying that, I admit that the age of gaming is really over, forever. Now, the developers that you'd expect amazing content from are producing un-fun, watered down crap and then charging an arm and a leg for it. People say, "oh, the graphics aren't a big deal because of gameplay." Sure, but the gameplay isn't that good to overlook it. Want a game with amazing gameplay, with not so great graphics that was completely overlooked? Look at the Xenoblade Chronicles. One of the best games of all time. But if a game comes along with amazing graphics but has tiny issues with gameplay? These people are all over it with their criticism. But since they are Bethesda fanboys, they literally know no end to their hypocrisy in praising a game that looks like it is straight out of 2007, and plays like it is straight out of 2007.

Want a good game? Buy the Witcher 3. That game has the heart, the substance, the style and the love put into it that you would expect for a game in 2015. The Witcher 3 deserves the Game of the Year in 2015, and if Fallout 4 gets it, you know for a fact that the entire industry is corrupt, rigged and undermined by developers and blind fanboys alike. Hell, even Star Wars Battlefront, which itself isn't an amazing game by any leaps and bounds, looks better, runs better, plays better, and has more replayability over Fallout 4.

And for people making excuses like, this game just looks like crap on consoles as compared to PC. The PC reviews are even worse. Just go look on Metacritic for the PC reviews.

Just because a game is associated with a developer and IP that you like, doesn't mean you have to turn a switch off in your brain that allows you to make informed decisions. If this game were any other title, it would have been completely panned. But since the main character is wearing a blue and yellow jumpsuit, it becomes a 10/10? Seriously? Can't you people see what you're doing? You're willfully rigging the entire system in order for it to continue milking customers and depriving genuinely talented studios from surviving!

Lastly, people talking about "80 hours of gameplay". I've put in 260 hours with The Witcher 3 and just saw Uma's transformation last night. 260 hours! That's what you expect from a game worth $60!

First Graphics what a joke every thing looks like a marginally smoother version of Fallout 3 no detail in anything. Anyone who says graphics are passable should ask themselves why they got a nextgen console to begin with. Everyone says the graphics suck cu the world is so big but it seems to me like witcher 3 had a world roughly the same size and somehow pulled of graphics that are worthy of nextgen hardware.
The story is as everyone says absolutely awful everything happens so quickly and if you stay on track with the main quest you can reach absolute disappointment in under 4 hours. Also Due to bad graphics, lousy dialogue, absolute no facial expressions or body language talking to npcs is a chore and paying attention to the story is hard. Coincidentally enough the most captivating npc (Nich Valentine) is actually a robot go figure.
Lets focus on some changes to gameplay that apart from lousy graphics and story make it less enjoyable than its predecessors.
1 V.A.T.S. is so nerfed it's not worth using. In fallout 3 and NV vats nearly stopped everything giving you time to decide if it was worth it to take a head shot or go for the high percentage body shot. Now in this game if you use vats to hit a group a ghouls that are fairly far away you have like 3 seconds to decide what to do before you get pummeled to the ground. They reduced vats damage too I seriously do more damage if I just aim at their head an pull the trigger than if I use vats. It also feels like your speed is much slower than the enemies so if you are fighting just one guy (and you haven't been killed because you weren't lightning fast deciding what to shot at using vats) when you actually execute an attack in vats he hits you more than you hit him what a joke. This makes vats useless and turns this game into an fps which isn't what i paid 60 bucks for.
    2. Where did the enemies go on my compass?
So I guess you enemy blips don't show up on your screen until they are aware of your presence. Well that worked great in Skyrim because you were usually in the small confines of a mine or a monster's lair but in fallout 4 where everything being so open (and the graphics making every thing look the same doesn't help) it makes being sneaky sneaky completely impossible. Along with this is there are no more compass markers for friendly npcs. This sometime makes questing difficult, it is extremely easy to lose companions. Worst of it all if you happen upon a friendly npc while your doing the sneaky sneaky (yeah I sadly took a nija perk how silly of me) and you blow em away cuz you think hes a raider. (yeah that happened to me once and I had to reload the game) . Honestly why isn't there just a minimap it'd make the game a hell of a lot more easy to enjoy. I also dislike that there are no skill points it just didn't make leveling up as fun as it used to be.
    3. the raido station seems like they got the greatest hits for fallout 3 and fallout NV and made that be the radio station for this game which bothered me cuz I liked listening to those super old fashioned songs but honestly I've had enough of "Butcher Pete" and that binga banga bongo i don't wanna leave the congo tarzan song.
Someone mentioned not being able to adjust gamma or brightness which isn't a big deal because you can adjust your tv though every next gen game I've played has some sort of brightness adjustment. This isn't the case for a ps Vita I can't simply change the brightness to a point where I can see using remote play. It sucks needing a flashlight past 4pm or I can't see 3 feet in front of me on my Vita. Also for some reason they changed the controls when using remote play with a Vita instead of sprint being R3(which is on the rear of the Ps Vita) they have sprint as the down button on the d pad..... Yeah very smart so I somehow need to hold the down button of the d pad and move the joystick with the same hand. Thanks bethesda
I did kind of like he settlement construction stuff but it was crude and left me wanting more. The shooting mechanics are improved too but that still plays into the hand of this being an fps with a story instead of an rpg.
Honestly Everything thing I did in this game I already did in fallout 3 minus the fun. My favorite part about this game was watching the commercials prior to buying it and watching the s.p.e.c.i.a.l. commercials while game installed

After 48 hours, I decided to stop playing the game. I have not completed the main quest, neither the factions quests. Just the minutemen.
I'm kind of disappointed with the game, tbh it is what I expected, it may not be the game for me. But I do think it can be a great game for some players.

I am stuck at a part where I am supposed to grow pomatoes, wheat and whatnot. I spent half an hour looking for vegetables then I fall asleep in front of my TV. My dog disappeared. What kind of game is that?
Do you need a PhD to play this game?

    Short Version:
Some of the serious bugs and glitches are now game-breakingly annoying with the new Survival Mode.

    Long Version:
The new Survival Mode checkpoint saving (beds only) PLUS a buggy game EQUALS 0 score.

Why 0? Because the game is broken in my eyes, no matter how large it is, no matter how many features it has, and so on. If I'm being punished for their bugs, the game is broken.
    • I refuse to repeatedly replay half-hour survival runs that I got right, because of their poor programming.
    • I refuse to play on a lower difficulty. It's too easy as it is.
    • I refuse to constantly find checkpoint-beds to work around the bugs and flaws, because it also means having to replay parts of the game that I got right.

1)Watching bodies / loot disappear before I can grab the loot feels like an excercise in epic trolling.
    2) Having my settlers suddenly start stealing from both workshops and containers is not a game feature. It is a design flaw or bug that feels like an exercise in epic trolling.
    3) If a game feature (building/settlements/settlers) is implemented so poorly that the players have to talk to each other to find ridiculous work-arounds, the game is broken.

I don't care that the game is an A for art design and map design.
Make a game that's half as big, with half as many features, and get it right.

Expand

I played this game for 4 hours and that was more than enough for me to remove the disc and list it on eBay. A clunky control system and a menu that has to be one of the worst I have seen, took their toll on my patience. If Bethesda spent 7 years making this piece of junk, they should all do the right thing and resign.

This game has been nothing but disappointing so far. I've played for over 40 hours, expecting things to get better, but they have only gotten worse, casual FPS style.

    The Pros:

-Graphics are improved over previous entries, but are still sub-standard.

-Enemy AI is slightly improved, animals will burrow into the ground when you try the old 'stand on a rock to get out of reach' trick that has worked in every other Bethesda RPG. Human enemies actually take cover and don't just rush to their deaths, they also weave when you are aiming at them.

-Building is a nice touch, although the mechanics of it could be hugely improved, as it is riddled with illogical flaws (like floating buildings). You can actually build a flying wooden house in the sky (not actually flying, just daft physics). Yes, really.

-The shooting mechanics are a little better than previous entries, BUT the improvement is not massive, and it still feels largely the same as F3/NV. Don't expect Bioshock shooting or anything.

-Crafting/upgrades. Good, but require far too much time investment to get anything worthwhile.

    -------------

    The cons:

    - Dialogue. The new dialogue system is absolutely atrocious. Now F3 and NV weren't exactly perfect in terms of dialogue, but they provided interesting, unexpected choices, with numerous outcomes in every situation. Remember spitting on Butch's sweet roll? Remember being an evil character? None of this exists in F4, and this is the game's biggest failure: dialogue is now reduced to 4 choices at all times:
    1) yes (the only way to progress)
    2) no (=come back later if you change your mind)
    3) why/what? (provides a recap of whatever has just been said, in case you skipped past the dialogue)
    4) Sarcastic (tell a joke, none of which are ever funny or remotely amusing, and none have any additional effect on the conversation).

Almost every conversation has only one outcome: violence. I've obsessively re-loaded and tried multiple ways around each conversation/standoff. Only rarely was there any choice whatsoever to avert a bloodbath. More than 90% of these situations have only one outcome. I enjoyed F3 and NV even more. F4 has completely destroyed the most fun and enjoyable aspect of the series: RP and interaction with NPCs. This has truly ruined the core of the game: your choices DO NOT matter. At all.

    -RPG elements removed. Seriously.

-Voiced protagonist. This was a horrible addition. I have not yet played a female character, but the male voice actor is ridiculous. He sounds completely nonchalant about everything. To clarify: his infant son has just been kidnapped, and he never gives any hints of being upset or traumatised, or being angry or anything. There are a few main story quests where he starts to sound a little upset, and of course, every storyline situation turns into a battle. You get a choice of 4 ways of saying 'ok, let's fight' every time before it starts. The voiced protagonist has no character, and really brings the whole RP element down as he plays the uncaring, nonchalant father looking (or not bothering to, most of the time) for his missing child.

-Ridiculous plot holes and narrative flaws:
    1) Kellogg (the man who kidnapped your son) somehow knows your son's name, despite there being no possible way of him knowing this, having abducted the baby as an infant and having never seen or heard his name. Somehow, Kellogg magically knows Shaun's name. Ludicrous. Bethesda cannot write coherently at all.

    2) I wandered into a place called Covenant, where my character immediately started getting dialogue options to ask about characters he has never heard of previously, calling them by name. This happens a LOT in Fallout 4 if you do your own exploring instead of just doing what quest-givers tell you.

-General lack of challenge, juxtaposed against cheap overpowered bullet-sponge 'legendary' enemies.
The vast majority of side quests consist of 'clear all ghouls' followed by the same quest 10 times in different locations. When it's not 'kill ghouls', it's 'kill all raiders', or 'retrieve item'. These quests make up the vast majority of the game's content, and they offer no dialogue at all, just combat with no other option.

Within the first 15 minutes or so of starting the game, you are given power-armour with a minigun, and you are made to fight a Deathclaw immediately after getting this gear. Within 30 mins of that, you'll join the Brotherhood of Steel after killing a few ghouls. The power armour removes any aspect of difficulty from this game, so I absolutely refuse to use it at all, it is like having god-mode cheats activated from the beginning. I can't stand using it.

-Bugs, ranging from the mildly omical, to the game-breaking.

Do you like Fallout? Avoid this garbage!

if the issues actually get addressed/fixed, it should be a marvelous game. as it stands, it's going to be largely unplayable for many (if you don't care about settlements and you want to fly through the main content as fast as possible and skip most optional quests, you might be fine and have a quite enjoyable experience. if you're a completionist, you're doomed).

This game is for people that play with their own poop. It's quite a ghastly game to look at it with hideous graphics, creatures -- absolutely horrible plot. The gameplay can shine, but in a world like the one created here -- why would anyone want to?

Feral Ghoul ugly in many ways, but beneath its iffy exterior beats the heart of one helluva great RPG. Get past the graphics deficiency, and the sheer thrill of Fallout 4’s combat, crafting options, and exploring will hold your attention for months. [January 2015, p64]

Fallout 4 leans to the Shooting side of things. It strips down the gameplay from the actual RPG elements and offers a meta-nuclaer shooting gallery which of course keep its charm and gameplay wealth but also feels a little too friendly for the new comers. The Base builder mode is unnecessary, boring and irritating. Unfortunately, overall, there are no steps forward for this Nuclear Holocaust Behemoth of the video games industry. Only steps sideways.
