Now for the game mechanics. Evolve has some of the best FPS mechanics out there at the moment, everything works great and helps with the immersion of the player.

if you enjoy a multiplayer FPS games then this if for you but if you prefer a game with a great story then i suggest you ignore this title.

Evolve is quite a unique experience. One that simply cannot be labeled purely as a shooter. That is only one element of the game, the other being the hunt. I quite enjoy fighting as both human/ monster as they are both equally fun. I think the part where it may be off putting, is when the monster is able to escape and you have to spend time trying to find him again. Some may argue thatEvolve is quite a unique experience. I think the part where it may be off putting, is when the monster is able to escape and you have to spend time trying to find him again. Some may argue that this is tedious and repetitious. But, once again , this is part of the game. The hunt. It does not bother me at all. As a matter of fact, I rather enjoy it. And i have also been in the role of the monster and the feeling of being hunted is a little thrilling to be honest. There were moments where I thought I was safe enough to feast or evolve only to realize that the hunting team were right on me .. and there have also been times where I have completely fooled them. Regardless, the battles are epic fun and brutal. The only real quip I have with this game is the DLC scheme is really bad. Really bad. And more importantly, there is a real lack of game modes . In short, this is a great, fun game IF you know what you are getting. If you are expecting a COD or Destiny even, type game... No. This is a unique game that offers up a lot of great ideas and for the most parts , succeeds. I feel that a sequel could definitely put some polish on a franchise I hope to see more of. Expand

Full disclosure: played the beta only, and did not really enjoy it enough to buy the full game. The reason behind this is the matchmaking, and the fact that the game was just boring. I am all about shooters like Left 4 Dead 2 (a game produced by Castle Rock) and Battlefield 4 but this one seemed to have missed the mark. Not really good for a game I was definitely looking for.

A new franchise into a genre that is frankly becoming a little stale. I have been gaming for a good 15 years, and to get to experience something fresh and masterful at what it is, is a real treat.

    -- GAMEPLAY--

4 vs 1. 4 human controlled classes with each class having three unlockable characters that all differ in playstyle dramatically. We have the standard 'assault', damage dealer with a personal shield. 'Medic', healer and integral to your groups survivorbility, a smart medic player is essential to a groups success. 'Support', beams a laser like shield on other team mates providing armour, or litters the battlefield with gun turrents that ravage the monster. Lastly the 'trapper', in my opinion the most important team member in the early stages when the player is able to smartly "dome" the monster and litter the ground with harpoons so the group can deal that all so important early damage.
    MONSTERS UNITE
We have three playable monsters at the outset, all differ in playstyles and all posses an arsenal that match the early overwhelming odds.
Goliath - Savage melee and a hefty armour pool give this guy and edge in the later game stages, but early on in the games progression he is extremley vunerable to damage
Kraken - More of a long range beast, who can also take to the skies and rain down electrified damage. A smart Kraken player is near impossible to stop in the later stages.
Wraith - The delicate deadly flower of the bunch. Armed with a low armour and health pool compared to her comrades, she is much more tempered to the more cunning of moster players. Fantastic melee options and abilities like abduction reward a clever player and provide some of the best thrills in gaming,

    Graphics and sound
CRISP - Everything graphically in the game is well thought out and detailed, from the lockers in your **** to the lilypads that float in water in the ridgelines. Characters burst on screen with pop that each individually belongs to them.
Sound design is essentially one of the games strongest elements. From the sounds of birds being disturbed, tree's cracking and getting knocked over, weapons firing, Monster evolving and letting out a guttural roar, everything is in place and expertley delivered.

    Replayability
AND NOTHING WAS THE SAME. This game is riddled so deeply with strategy that its a little confronting. What's your monster play at the begining of a match? Do you simply burst and try to get enough space in between the hunters and yourself leaving your tracks for all to see ? Do you feint going one direction whilst crawling back over your tracks and going the other.
Hunters are no exception either, does the group splinter off into two's to cover more ground, do i pick ceratin characters that have different skill sets to support the group? The monster has just turned stage 3, do we try to seek them out whilst they have no armour, or head to the power relay and prepare as best as possible, laying mines and placing turrets.

Thats the true beauty to Evolve, and the reason this game is already near and dear to my heart. Come into this game with an open mind for a different experience, and an understanding that it plays most differently to others and requires understanding and adaptability on the players behalf, and you will not regret it.

Sadly DLC is a necessary evil in the gaming industry but I feel game makers are starting to rush games and expect us to pay for what should have been included in the first place. That is a crooked way to do business. Imagine buying a car and then having to spend extra on an engine and wheels. For this reason, although I was an avid Left 4 Dead fan, I will pass on this. But of course the developer had to cut like 70% of the game and sell it as DLC, and Day 1 DLC at that, mind you. Because who would complain about being ripped off? Gamers are sheep, duh, and the developer's so smart. Of course they won't.

This game should backfire at them badly. Developers like these don't deserve a penny, don't even deserve to be around. Developers like these don't make games because they love doing it and expect to make something out of it, they do it just for making something out of it. Here you see a job being put to practice, not passion.

For the content you get, this game is not worth it. Basically a game that has as much content as a free to play game, which means that its not much and everything else is locked behind pay walls, but the game itself also costs a whopping 60$ to get into.

Move on, ignore this. You'll have no regrets.

Buying skins is ok and it doesn't affect the gameplay. The only thing that bothers me are the new monsters and hunters coming in the future and that you aren't able to unlock them unless you pay for them. Why isn't there some kind of ingame currency for buying them with "playtime"?

If I had to describe Evolve to anyone it would be that it is essentially a "Strategic Left 4 Dead"( which makes sense as the developers of both games are the same). All of your teammates must co-operate in order to capture the "Goliath". Seems simple enough, although gameplay sessions can be ruined with a lot of inexperienced or bad players trying to figure out the control schemes or just being a plain noob.. (Ex. Goliath is close by and the trapper doesn't throw down the grenade to trap the monster. This was a situation that happened countless times.)

If you plan on playing the campaign and expect a Christopher Nolan written campaign - here's a spoiler alert. The campaign totally sucks and is completely what you would expect from a Campaign comprised of 4 mercenaries trying to kill monsters.. (A for effort?) Sure. Turtle Rock definitely tried to make the campaign story epic and it shows through the cut scenes, the only problem is it's plain boring and trying too hard. The nice thing with Left 4 Dead was it was kind of set up as if they were Episodes where the story was only based on surviving. This was a cool premise and it didn't seem to try too hard nor raise any expectations. It could have been more wise of Turtle Rock studios to try toning down the campaign and even make the characters more memorable or humorous as the characters in Left 4 Dead.

To be completely honest if you need my advice. Avoid the campaign. It is worth a try although it seems all the experienced players have decided to stick with the Skirmish mode making having fun an actual possibility.

All in all, minus the bad technical issues - Evolve is a lot of fun. The different roles allow for variety in game play type and the weapons can be really awesome! Many rewards are to be found and help keep gamers coming back to earn great unlocks such as new characters and more. Playing as the monster is tons of fun, especially when choosing new upgrades for your Goliath and other monsters, and even being tedious with your opponents.

The maps are great and theirs a fair amount although their still needs to be a bit more variety in the locations of the maps. I found myself too many time in swamps and forests giving a very flushed feel to the overall experience..

Although most of this review sounds like a bash on the game, I really do like Evolve! Theirs just so much more that can be done to make this a better game.

Here's a list of all the improvements I think are necessary..

    - More online games modes ( Defend, death match, etc)
    - More maps with variety
    - More playable monsters (Minor enemies like Left 4 Dead.)
    - 8v8 multi-player

A lot of these ideas are reflected on the Defend game mode! ^

If I had to give Evolve a score out of 10 I would probably give it a 7.5. Their is still much that is needed to be fixed to make this a great online experience.

You will never forget playing this game. This is an experience you should not miss. There is no other game that conveys the atmosphere, excitement, and overall gaming experience of Evolve. Don't miss out just because of the weird negative hype - that has nothing to do with the actual game.

Pacing and the transitions from hunt to battle are phenomenal; I love the sense of tracking a giant monster through dark forests or snowy blizzards, intent on the chase but equally fearful that at any moment the beast will turn and ambush the Hunters. Urgency and suspense drive the early gameplay whether as the Hunters trying to track and cut off the monster before it can evolve and become even more dangerous, or as the Monster trying to race ahead, feed, double-back, hide, throw off pursuit knowing that a team of four is hunting you...until you are strong, and whirl, and descend on them like rage and storm.

And then suddenly it is a wild, brutal, and deeply tactical battle for both sides, comboing abilities, intrinsic teamwork abilities, utilizing map and environment advantage (the maps are wonderful and vertical and full of different moments and opportunities), and then perhaps the chase is on again, as either side attempts to flee and disengage and lick their wounds before picking their time and place once more. The transitions from hunt to battle to chase to final stand, however they play out, are always dynamic and interesting and wild fun.

Abilities differ enough between hunter characters to let you find the one that best fits your play style or team composition, while still all reinforcing the basic class role of that character on the team. Monsters fill the classic archetypes of melee, ranged, and stealth to let you pick your favorite brand of mayhem, and each is equally capable of fight or flight in unique ways.

The strategic depth increases the more you play, as you begin to consider better ways to utilize the maps, combo abilities, isolate hunters, or cut off the monster's retreat. Win or lose, every round is fun and exciting. Either team could win at any time.

There is offline solo play with competent bots, big points for that.
There is also a full color instruction manual in the box; this is how you know it was made with true gamer love.

DLC? Guess what? At launch, DLC literally does not exist. Lot of fuss about content that has yet to be made. You can preorder DLC if that's your thing, but stop worrying about whether or not you want DLC, you don't need it. Play the game. There are plenty of characters to choose from and plenty of game, and in the heat of battle and the thrill of the chase, all that matters is that you are either hunter or hunted...and in the end, everyone is both, and that's what makes it fantastic.

There is no other gaming experience like this. And you should absolutely experience it. Ignore the negatively; play the game because gaming is about new and fascinating games, not about whining about marketing. Evolve.

Personally I disagree with lots of the lower scoring opinions on here. If you want open world and side ops - play "Farcry 4" - if you want content play "The last of Us" - If you want more campaigns, play Destiny.

Personally I disagree with lots of the lower scoring opinions on here. If you want open world and side ops - play "Farcry 4" - if you want content play "The last of Us" - If you want more campaigns, play Destiny.

But as for pure multiplayer - Evolve is a unique co-op experience that does the job it was designed to do. Not over-complicated - Not trying to be something its not; and stands alone on a shelf of PS4 games that all do similar things.

Evolve doesn't tolerate spamming buttons, it actually requires a team to use ALL their skills and abilities to take down a monster, and rewards players accordingly.

Love the haters on here complaining about DLC's that cost as much as a large coffee these days (Get a job) - Things cost money, get used to it - if you don't like it, don't buy it.

Evolve creators didn't hide what this game was - its been clear from the outset what type of game this would be - and for those like me whom in the early days of MMO lived in Warcraft Bg's and Arena's - Evolve is a welcome addition to further Co-op craziness.

Clearly teams are only as strong as the weakest link, and trappers whom don't have a clue tend to frustrate other players. If this happens more than twice in a row - I just have a break as the Monster (You don't need to rely on anyone here to punish other players) - Or - even a better suggestion - quit whinging and hone your skills as a trapper or medic and be that difference that your team requires for a result.

Often in Evolve the stars line up and team play becomes fluent and beautiful - its a fun game and well worth a buy - as long as you already have clear expectations of what the game is at the outset.

Find a character you love, but be familiar with all play styles (as you will be called on from time to time to play different roles)

If you're the type of person whom runs away (On an "I AM" quest) from a team mate whom is trapped in a flower do yourself and others a favour and uninstall the game.

Evolve, for Evolved players only - noobs and solo players need not apply.

I very much enjoy the gameplay of Evolve, with it's cat and mouse style of asymmetrical game-play where four players play FPS style hunters and one player plays a videogame boss type monster. Many criticize the game for lack of content, but I think it's better to have a small amount of very well balanced weapons/characters than many overpowered and useless additions to a game.

Before this game was released I was planning on giving it a zero purely because of all the DLC controversy. It wouldn't of been an honest score but just my way of rebelling against the way gaming has become. However, after playing this game I can't bring myself to give it a bad score and it's already got enough of them anyway.

The graphics are beautiful, dark and brooding, and varied between the environments with awesome weather effects and smooth framerates at all times. To actually work for something. It's like everyone wants everything to be completely available from the jump so then they can complain about the fact that there is nothing to play toward. Anyways on to my review.

Now To start, the detail is amazing. The shadows and lighting blend perfect. The detail they put into the monsters is truly a gaming marvel. The game play is even better. Taking what a lot of the haters here are complaining about, you have to be on a competent team in order to be successful. If your on a team of hunters and your Medic or your Trapper are screwing off or are inexperienced, you will have a tough time. But if you have friends, or are just smart about how you matchmake (Don't get stuck with a bunch of noobs, obviously.) you'll be just fine. On to the monster.. This can be a bit frustrating.. But overall my experience with the monster has been positive. If you can just get down a good mix of stealth and forging for wildlife to evolve it can be fun, but get cornered early and your toast.

All in all, Evolve is a perfect 10. Its an original concept, there is plenty of buffs and characters/monsters to unlock to keep you busy for 50+ hours which in my opinion is worthy of my $65.

Knowing compairing games of different genres or companies isnt that great to do, but if im doing that right now, this would be thd list of games that makes such a pricetag worth the investment:

ElderScrolls - Skyrim: This game got a stunning ammount of content to enjoy and last for quite a while (still dos)
Fallout 3 / New vegas : worth the investment at launch.

This are just one example, Destiny in my eyes would be the exact same as Evolve is right now, lacking content, selling DLC content that already exists on the Disk, just to name a few.

I'm going to give this a 5 / 10 rating, i love the game, but at its current state, its not worth the full 60 bucks at launch.

For anyone new and unfamiliar and looking for the be-all-end-all review, here it is. There's also an explanation of this dlc controversy.

GAMEPLAY: You have a team of four hunters, well... hunting a monster! You can choose to be either a medic, assault, trapper (who tracks and traps the monster), and support. Or for lone wolves, you can be the monster. This division is pretty great because teamwork is important in winning as hunters, but if you're a lone wolf type you can play as a monster. There are 12 hunters to choose from, 3 from each class, along with 3 monsters. No monster or hunter is better than the others, they're all balanced and will continue to be balanced to a 50% win rate. Not only this, the maps are filled with wildlife that may try to kill you. The monster has to eat animals to get stronger, while the hunters have to try and kill it before it gets too strong. In the beginning of a typical 15 minute game, the hunters are stronger and the monster is stage 1 and has to run and hide until he gets stronger. Towards the middle, the monster is probably up to stage 2 and is now about even with the hunters. Stage 3 monsters are very hard to take down. It's a game of strategy, hunting, and ambushes! There are other objectives on the map and game modes as well that I haven't even scratched the surface of what you can do.

GRAPHICS AND SOUND: It's one of the most beautiful next gen games. There is no Ps3 or Xbox 360 version so they really had the opportunity to push the graphics. You need to use your ears as a hunter to find the monster, so the sound is suitably awesome and detailed with wildlife, guns, and environmental sounds.

MULTIPLAYER AND SINGLEPLAYER: The online matchmaking has improved greatly since the alpha and beta builds. This is no Halo MCC! It works great and only gets better with only a few launch hiccups that should pass. If you're a single player, there is no story mode since they didn't go the Battlefield or COD approach and tack on a shallow story mode. BUT! You can play every mode, map, monster and hunter that you have with Bots! And boy are these bots smart. So if you're ever out of internet, fire the bots up and keep playing! Oh btw, teamwork is always extremely important for hunter survival!

LONGEVITY: Most shooting games out there right now end up with you using your same favorite gun running around on the same few maps. More maps never really change much. But in Evolve, there is, in my opinion coming from the PC game Natural Selection 2 which is kinda like this, infinite replayability in hunting or being hunted. The characters are so diverse with different abilities and strategies to them that hunting human beings, ambushing them, and attacking them will always be fresh for you.

DLC Controversy: Gamers are a strange bunch. We churn out $15 or more for COD maps and Battlefield Premium, season passes galore for every game. But suddenly people have a problem paying money for Evolve DLC. Let's get some facts straight down here:

    1. No day 1 DLC. Nothing is locked on the disk, since the new characters haven't even been fully made yet. All future maps and modes will be free so as not to fragment the community
    2. No future hunters or monsters are necessary to buy, they will not be stronger or better than what you have. They'll be balanced just like the rest.
    3. Future monsters and hunters, if you don't get a bundle which you always should, will cost $15 per monster or $7.50 for hunters. A whole new balanced, animated, voiced, character for the price of a map pack? I'm in!
    4. Yea you can buy skins. I like skins. You don't? Then don't buy them. Simple!

In my opinion, new monsters and hunters drastically change the gameplay far more than the map packs we buy for other games. I bought all the BF4 maps with Premium and that cost me almost $50! Paying for a new monster or hunter that completely changes the gameplay is worth much more than DLC in other games. And heck maps are free and if you don't buy these new characters, you'll still get to play against them! There is no community fragmentation. You don't need to buy them to be successful at all.

What gamers did was basically attack a perfectly good game because the hate DLC. Even though DLC is in every game now. Why did they have to attack such a unique game as Evolve that tries to break new ground? Because gamers are full of misinformation and too much emotion. This is the same reason that they can barely make any headway against greedy publishers. Attack Evolve, but continue to buy yearly bug ridden COD or Assassins creed along with all the DLC. Smart!

If you need more info, go to the TRS official forums. The devs have been open and involved with everything and have been extremely responsive since they first announced the game. If you're confused or still undecided, go there rather than be exposed to the misinformation campaign by some gamers giving Evolve bad reviews. Do yourself a favor and buy this amazing experience

You basically run around trying to find the monster, then finally you get to him, attack until his shields are gone, then he runs away, chase him down again, by the time you get back to him his shields are back up again, just a rinse and repeat game, and shame on me for not waiting for the reviews before I bought it.

To those without internet connections, you may as well avoid this game. There is a single player but it's not a cinematic campaign with detailed characters, great music, cutscenes, and atmosphere. It is simply an offline version of the multiplayer but with AI either assisting you as hunters or playing as the monster. It works if you are bored, or want some practice before jumping into multiplayer.

Multiplayer is fun and refreshing. In a genre full of 6v6, 12v12, and so on it's nice to see asymmetrical multiplayer games. The classes are simple yet effective in this type of game. Each with their own abilities and weapons that assist your efforts to kill the player posing as a vicious and deadly beast. The combat is fast paced and extremely tense towards the later parts of the match but admittedly many players that currently play as the monster have adopted the, excuse my language, **** approach. I say this because it isn't very fun to spend 20 minutes running around a map looking for something that purposefully avoids a fight so it can hit stage 3 of the monster's evolution. It is understandable to avoid the hunters until stage 2 but once stage 2 has been achieved the monster is more than capable of surviving and possibly killing the enemy team. The lack of incentive to take the fight to the hunters is upsetting but once your opponent decides to attack the game becomes a satisfying battle of skill, coordination, and just a bit of luck.

The graphics are great and the game runs well most of the time. There are some noticeable frame rate losses (ps4) that I've noticed but most likely will be fixed at some point. The music is sub par hut fits the sci fi style of the game and the environments are well detailed. This game has its fair share of annoying bugs that should have been halted at beta ie... fps stutter, game disconnects, characters becoming stuck, and ranks resetting but these are all fixable if the developer works fast enough.

As it is right now i say the game is enjoyable and worth the money. One thing that I will stress, however, is to fully appreciate playing as a hunter you will want friends instead of randoms. This game is miserable in that regard which is why it isn't an 8/10 for me.

Ultimately you should see some videos of letsplayers, or rent this game if you are skeptical but it is great fun when your team works well.

After simply taking a break or playing some of the other game modes, I was happy to come back to it. Each match plays out differently and often requires you to actually consider going about your own play style differently from the previous match. It depends on their comp every time. I love that in a game. Some methods work better than others.

DLC. The thing most of everyone is crying about. I'll start off by saying that you don't need to buy -anything- to enjoy the game's upcoming content. Even if you don't spend a single penny, the upcoming maps are free, the upcoming modes are free, and the thing that isn't free is actually playing the new monsters and characters. Get this though... You can still play alongside people who have the new characters and play against the new monsters! Yes, you can use them yourself, but you can at least play with the people who are playing as them. The DLC is optional and doesn't exclude you from anything except actually playing the upcoming characters.

That said, the DLC content is pricey. So yes, that is a con in itself. The fact I'm not forced to buy it and can still play games that involve it though? That makes me happy... And again. Upcoming MAPS AND MODES ARE FREE. League of Legends is a good comparison. Even if you don't personally own the champions and skins, you still see them in game. Evolve works in the same manner.

Overall? I'm happy with this game and while I can't say I'll be jumping on all of the DLC due to the price, it's nice to know it won't hinder my experience. I hope this was helpful for anyone who may of been on the fence about getting this game.

    I'd recommend it.

If you dont want to pay extra money for DLC then dont. You can still play with people who do. I also disagree with the negative reviews arguing that gameplay is unbalanced. I have played with eight human characters and two monsters so far and have won and lost different ways and at different times. However, I do agree with the negative reviews that there is no story line and no campaign. Although I mostly buy video games for their compcompetitive multiplayer, I do enjoy playing campaign as well. I have shown some friends this game and they're all on my side, and the three of them ended up buying the game later in the day. I think if you want an intelligent and methodical multiplayer game, this is a good pick up. I am most likely going to buy some DLC too. $100 For me and 3-4 friends to have probably 100 hours of fun over the next year is totally worth it in my book. Expand

If they hadn't been greedy about it they could have been the next big "must have" weird niche game.

Sadly the game gets very formulaic, lay down some fake tracks, double back with sneak, go eat critters and avoid the dorksquad until you hit maximum level, then go smash the hunters or the generator.
OR get stuck on the hunter team and quit because not being the monster is extra boring.

Evolve multiplayer is Extremely fun and unique if you have a team who know how to play. The hunter-hunted game is very intense and it is not quite like any other games. It is, however, true that this game is severely overpriced, with no campaign, only 15 playable characters (12 humans, 3 monsters) and not a lot of maps.
I recommend picking this up after price drops - this game is really fun.

Not sure why the Metacritic score is so high, but this game gets boring fast. It's too simple and has no story. If you enjoy brainless shooter then you may get something out of the game, but even then likely only for an hour or two. And what is with all of the DLC! Damn, I feel ripped off! Ok, so the game is fun, aside from really requiring a group with headsets.

All the DLC, monsters, hunters, skins plus an actual campaign, would be about enough content for a 60 dollar game, but as it is, you pay 60 for the game, 15 for one of the next monsters, I'd assume 15 for the 5th monster, 6.99 for each set of monster skins, and like, what was it, 3.99 for the weapons skins

Evolve is one of those games that I want to love. The idea is novel and I was hoping for so much from this game. In reality the game is a recipe for high blood pressure and/or self harm. It is totally unbalanced, especially if you want to play as the monster as I did. Four vs one should have been okay if the developers had taken appropriate steps to create an equal playing field. But alas that is not the case. If you have any interest in playing the monster, especially the first one you are lumbered with, the game becomes an absolute farce. Four hunters equipped with weapons and gadgets that can track you quickly, shoot you from a distance, drop hell-fire missiles on your immediate position, tie you to the spot with plasma chains, lay mines and throw up a dome plasma cage that traps you in a tight combat position, unable to escape, with those four hunters who can deploy all of those weapons against you, doing just that. Meanwhile you have no ability to regenerate health (other than by evolving - which you can't do under attack). You can attempt to regenerate armour by killing and eating wildlife, but you can't eat it when you are being shot.

What can the monster do? Well you can throw a rock which does pretty much no damage at all to the four hunters. You can swipe them, rush at them, do a plunge style attack or breathe fire at them. None of which deals damage anywhere near fast enough to get rid of any of the hunters in time to save your health bar sufficiently to make the game fair or even reasonable. And guess what, once you've thrown a rock or spent one of your other pointless powers, there's an infuriating cool down period to be waited out before you can do it again. Even when are breathing fire, you can't dish out the standard slash style swipes at the same time. No sir, one at a time please and just wait your turn for the next go. Meanwhile, all four hunters continue to relentlessly bombard you with their myriad of weapons at the time time.

And then there is the wildlife. When you are being attacked by the hunters, any creatures in the vicinity can have a pop at you as well. Very helpful and not in the least bit annoying.

Playing as a hunter is easier than the monster, but is invariably more boring. Unless you and your buddies are all hooked up on mic's speaking to each other, forget any preconception that you will feel part of a team. You will wander about, looking for where the other team players are going and will follow like a little sheep until you come across some action (unless you have chosen the tracker and are lucky enough to have been chosen to play the tracker by the server - yes, you can't even play the character you actually want to play most of the time in multiplayer as only one of each character is permitted in the round at any one time, unlike COD for example where you can choose who you want to be, what perks you want to have and stick with that to gain expertise and skill with that character. None of that here sir, choose the monster and you might play the medic. Choose the assault class and you might end up playing the tracker.)

Yes I prefer single player modes to multiplayer. But here both are as bad as each other. There is no forgiveness and nothing to tempt loyalty other than the grind of levelling up to achieve some extra perks or another monster to play with. Is it worth it though?

This game is SO disappointing and frustrating on so many levels. The most prominent emotion I am left with after 8 hours of tedious play is, and I regret this yet it is true, utter disdain (I nearly said hatred) for the developers of this utter pile of tosh.

Think very carefully before you part with your cash for this. I can not think of another game in my 30 years of gaming experience that is as unbalanced, as unfair or as enraging as this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To start off I am a gamer who generally gets bored/done with games within a month at max. If it's really solid and has A LOT of content, I can stick around and play for a month or so then I get burnt out.

Secondly this opinion I am about to share is regarding roughly 3 or 4 hours played.

Third, I am just downright awful at competitive games but what I am about to share shouldn't have any weigh on my opinion.

So to start, I think the game is good. It comes off as well polished and detailed. The environments are fun and you can get absolutely lost in them. The characters are covered in little details even if the art style does feel a bit bland. The monsters are scary and radiate power.

You are thrown into a tutorial to show you how to play as the Goliath and after that there are some rewards and you are shown incentive to perfect the tutorials then given the option to play a tutorial for the hunters or jump online. I proceeded to jump online and play my first skirmish game ( which is locked to hunt mode only from pick up play, this might be different with a party or friend invite only. ) The first game lasted roughly 10 minutes and ended with us, the hunters, victorious over the monsters. The second round, we conquered the beast in under 2 minutes. This became a bit of a back and forth for my next few hours. I tried the Evacuation mode, which puts you through all the games modes. Hunt, Nest, Rescue, and Defend. I might have overlooked a mode or two as again, fairly limited play time. This is where the two things that really rubbed me the wrong way with the game stood out. Some of the game modes just feel down right unfair. If the monster play is an extreme, either good or bad. The balance of power is very noticeable. I guess you would say play more and get better, but it just feels a bit more than that to me. This issue leads into some quirks I have with certain game modes. Nest and Rescue become, somewhat over challenging for an average player. Defend also can suffer a bit from this because it also sends in waves of minions ( which might not happen depending on how well you do in Evacuation in general ) that seem to tip the scales greatly.

The games overall progression also feels a bit off. To unlock characters, skins, badges and other rewards you have to obtain proficiency with each characters weapon. When you do an overall certain amount of damage with it you gain its proficiency and a small boost to that weapon. Certain weapons feel harder to obtain that others because its harder to land damage or the overall incentive to use them is harder. One that sticks out to me is the supports orbital strike. Landing that thing accurately on a player controlled monster will end up being a nightmare for people like me.

So to finalize, I think the game is good, and some will find immense value with it. I myself, regret the purchase. The carrots are on sticks that feel far too long and some imbalance issues don't really want to make me tough it out and earn them. Maybe in the long haul and some balance patches my overall opinion might change but right now. I wish I had saved the $60 bucks.

This game is very well constructed. Everything from the hunters to monsters feels well balanced. moving from 1st to 3rd person is nice and makes the experience/maps more dynamic with every play. The progression of characters has a sense of accomplishment without feeling too "grindy". Despite rumblings on what this game lacks in story, it makes up for in gameplay. The 4 v 1 experience does not feel so much forced but rather needed. A group of hunters must defend a planet and its inhabitants from "monsters". The ability to set up a preference of which class/role you would like to play adds to the diversity of the games experience. With 12 hunters, 3 monsters, and 12 maps with multiple modes/modifiers this game actually pack quite a punch in terms of content compared to other games published lately, and not so much as a punch to the wallet. It might not hurt to mention that future DLC content will add to this.

Graphics are not exactly top notch but that should never detract from the bottom line: "is the game fun?"
My answer is yes, the 3GB patch on day one only helped the game with load times an matchmaking and should not be viewed as a problem but rather developers making the game better before you even play it. As far as the on-line/off-line options; offline, bots take on the roll of other characters that you can takeover with the touch of a button keeping single player as a somewhat standalone testing arena before you hop online and go PvP.

The experience that Evolve offers is different and not for everyone, but it does seem like it deserves a look if you like PvP, first person shooters, or controlling a monster with the ability to wipe out an entire team of hunters. Hopefully none if this sways you from the game, I hope you enjoy it as much as I am.

The gameplay while it might be fun when you're in the thick of it, is too sporadic at times. It seems most of the time you're just wandering around following footprints rather then fighting the monster. That leads me to my next complaint, complete lack of teamwork from what I've seen. Unless the 4 members work together the monster just flattens one after the other over the course of the round. Most people who play this do not work well together. That really ruins the experience in my opinion. It would've been nice to have a more robust selection of weapons and equipment. You're characters seem to be stuck with the predetermined weapons they've been given. There again lies another problem, day one, MEANINGLESS DLC. Weapon skin packs for $6.99? Are you kidding me?!?! And not just one pack available, there's like 8. That should've been wrapped in with the game from the start, not something that could easily cost more then that game itself. There's no value whatsoever to the opening day DLC that's available.

    So, for me, the PROS--
-Interesting take on the multiplayer FPS, not the normally see guy, kill guy, repeat.
-Interesting weapons (except for the lack of variety)

    CONS--
-Very, very, very repetitive gameplay. You play one match, you've seen the meat of this game.
-No reason to play single player. There's no story. Unless you're like me and get sick of the lack of teamwork and want to level up your character (which you can only focus on really offline). Online you're forced to play classes you might not like.
-Graphics probably could've been accomplished on PS3 and PS4 and look the same. Nothing too flashy here.
-DLC. STOP WITH THE DAY ONE, USELESS DLC. It adds nothing to this game and only subtracts from your pocket. I could see $1.99 for a skin pack, but $6.99? That's just criminal. Unless your going to add real substance, please don't charge people to look a little different.

Overall I guess I'm glad we're in the age of updates and such. I'd really like to enjoy this game more but so far it's falling flat of the hype and expectations. Had this come out before Left 4 Dead, then maybe you'd have something unique and special. So far this tries to repeat that success and it doesn't fit the bill. I'm just hoping over the next few months this game can do what the cover says in bold letters, Evolve. Hopefully they can alter it enough to make it live up to what everyone thought it was going to be.

DLC: The Video Game (also known as Evolve) is a mediocre first person shooter (surprise surprise!) that brings nothing new to the genre other than lacklustre asymmetrical multiplayer and standard FPS shooting mechanics that are neither good or bad, just "meh".

No suspense whatsoever, no anything actually. You don't care who you're partnered with, you don't care about the skill development system which may as well have the word "mundane" plastered over the screen.

This is Titanfall, Destiny and every other FPS you've ever played and obviously are bored with completely rolled into one, but with one key difference - you don't own the game. You don't. Oh, you bought it alright, you're probably thinking "yes I do, look, it's there!" - but no, you own, what, 5% of the game? 95%, at least, is locked behind DLC. You want this game in full? Be prepared to pay £150 or something over the next six months. Not that, as a sane person, you would, because it's mediocrity personified, but this is what 2K Games wants you to do. Want a shiny new skin over your character models? £5 PLEASE. Want a new gun or something? £10 PLEEEEEASE...

This business practice will be what causes a gaming industry crash - it's a matter of time. Game companies are treating customers like braindead simpletons and it'll backfire obviously, as at some point people en masse will say "I'm not paying £50 for 5% of a game, especially a new IP that I have no idea about at all."

The positives? Graphically it's alright, but not amazing. Voice acting isn't particularly awful, but who the hell cares, really, as this is a game that should be a free to play shooter on PC or through PSN or whatever that has microtransactions to buy if you've played the game and enjoyed it.

WHY do game developers have an aversion to creating a quality game off the bat, full of content, then selling expansions and meaningful content if it's felt customers would go for it? The current practice of scummy companies like Ubisoft, EA and 2K are self-harming in the long term for short term gain, and they're too stupid to see it.

Delighted to see gamers rejecting this crap and scoring it 5.2 at the time of review - but that's not low enough. Give the middle finger to these cretins and reject this nonsense, as your money deserves some god-damn effort from developers.

This game gets old fast. Extremely repetitive and a shallow game for 60$. Don't waste your money, this game will cost less than a gourmet hamburger in a few months.

This game is so absolutely multiplayer, that you can almost forget the idea of playing alone. Playing with strangers in a game like this just never works out. Soon as I played it, I realised the game was a shell. If you wanted what was inside the shell you'd have to pay money for DLC and microtransactions. How they think they can get away with that is beyond me and unacceptable. Terrible stuff.

Okay, so we have stupidly complementary reviews on here and ridiculously negative review.

I rank this an 8, it is a really fun game, i've played it for around 3/4 hours now and i'm still having a blast, i've been playing solo as the monster alot as i'm waiting for my friend to get this game however even just playing my own, pitting my wits against a team of hunters is just so much fun,

Evacuation mode is amazing 5 random game modes with modifiers and a tiny bit of story is my favorite part, there is plenty to unlock and to work towards, which is in my opinion a good thing but for others it won't be.

And for people complaining about day 1 dlc its just skins, cosmetic stuff that you don't have to buy, its not pay to win or anything so just shut up complaining about it.

Some are just cosmetic skins and future use of Monsters, but if day one already has some DLC, I am sure you know what to expect. Watch a youtube video and within five minutes you will get the gist of the game. Use special abilities of each character to hunt down a large powerful monster and then run or separate when he charges you. Also..please take the time to look at the people who rate these games a 10. These people made an account today or a week ago and have rated this one game....coincidence? C'mon. I know Metacritic is full of trolls and idiots, but some honest personal reviews are on here too. Please, for the love of gaming and all that used to be good, avoid buying this game so 2K and the rest of the fat white bastards that run gaming companies start to understand that we are not all 12 years old, willing to pay 60 dollars for DLC every six months. The game itself is bland. It isn't anything special. It was released in a beta form much like Halo The Master Chief Collection where there are still a ton of bugs and the online lets you connect to about 5 matches in 3 hours.

It is another broken game released before reviews can be published which should tell you a lot.

This game will be dead online the moment Battlefield hits the scene. Much like Titanfall, this online community will not be around in 6 months, let alone 3.

First and for most alot of people seem to be confused about different thing about this game that i will clear up First this is not a Multiplayer only game it can be played offline without and internet connection , the Wraith and third tier of hunters are not dlc they are in the game all you have to do to get them is to unlock them, and lastly all future Map and Modes DLC will be free as to not split the community.

The game evolve has been one of the most orignal games I have seen in a long time and it pays off. out of the gate you are dropped into a harsh world where it is eat or be eaten you must choose to be the hunter or the monster and try to survive or kill the beast. This game offers 5 modes,Nest,Hunt,Rescue,Defend and Evacuation, 12 hunters 3 in each class Trapper,Medic,Assault and Support, i think 13 maps and 3 Monsters Goliath,Kraken and Wraith.

I have spent a great amount of time on this game and in my honest opinion it is one of the most enjoyable games i have ever played. Each Role of hunters has a job on the team and a unique set of equipment to get it done. I will tell you right now this game will not hold your hand like a mom you must learn on your own to master it. Due to this some matches can be frustrating some players will not know what their role is and how do this the job right. To be better at every role i suggest practicing in single player and watching tutorial videos.

The thrill of the hunt is great but the destruction mayhem of being the monster is oh so sweet as well. Playing as the monster can be just as challenging as being a hunter if you do not know what you are doing it could be the meat grinder for you, each monster has a different play style so find one that suit you and practice, The monster has different objectives in each mode as do the hunters, but you are a beast and its time to take the planet back.

All in all for and brand new IP it is a fantastic game i would recommend it to anyone that wants a game that will last a long time. I will enjoy this game and i hope you do as well have a nice day

    - Too many maps felt excessively familiar. Traversing oppressive, monochromatic chasms grew tiresome.
    - Various bugs, glitches, and connectivity issues.
    - A.I. aptitude is sub par
    - Warranted public odium concerning microtransactions
    - After new game awe dissipated, gameplay overall felt repetitive and mundane.
    - Graphics are mediocre

** From my perspective the game lacked generic competitive fps depth to satisfy me, and although there were certainly fun moments, I'm hard pressed to agree the accumulative day one price is justified for such an unexceptional, multiplayer focused game.

imagine the monster is invisible and you only can avoid it by reading foot prints and broken bushes, you need to be very close, because there is an hidden enemy out there. every 5 or 10 minutes he can be invisible and can kill one of your group.who will be the next? can you survive or hunt it down? that game would be amazing, but instead they created a comic game dlc milk the cow fest. for me its disney's adventures of the gummi bears because everyone is jumping and flying around, this game feels and plays really bad, there is no long term motivation.
its not ultra bad that they created an alternative to a zombie survival (left for dead), but the long-term motivation can not be maintained without their dlc policy. if you dont buy dlcs maps and monster the game become really quick very boring, the gameplay isnt the best.
please why didnt they just create another left for dead game or a nice hunt and stealth game like in the "predator" movie. matchmaking is bad aswell. for me evolve is a dissapointment.

The lack of 1 player options is irrelevant when you have a PS+ membership and a love of gaming. I've not done much as the beasts so far, its very challenging from what I have done, but as a hunter, it is simply the best FPS experience I've ever played.
The devs have gone out n out to create a world of intrigue and danger, and scale that will blow you away. When a Goliath is charging towards you, the action left me speechless, my team mates all shouted commands and the community is already proving a significantly more sportsmanlike than that in CoD.

I can't understand how anyone can rate this game Zero. It's been made to be a multiplayer FPS online, and I think it offers a much deeper and certainty more satisfying experience than that of CoD and from what I saw on the Hardline Beta this past week... honestly, if you're a fan of Left4Dead or FPSs and have been wondering if to buy this or not, don't hesitate. You won't regret it

As far as the dlc drama goes, the expansion monsters and hunters are not necessary at all since TRS makes sure everything is balanced to a 50% win rate. The prices are the same you'd pay for a map pack in other games only this time, a monster or a hunter changes the gameplay way more than a lousy map pack would and are worth it, but again not necessary. Also, all new maps and modes will be free as the dev has taking great care to ensuring the commmunity stays unfragmented.

Going back to the game, once you cut through the lies fed by this angry internet mob, TRS is incredibly open about this amazing game that I have no doubt will keep me entertain for a long long time. I personally love playing the monster but all of the classes are so fun that I don't mind any role. It's for both the solo and team player in all of us. If you get tired of online, the solo play is AMAZING with very good bots.

This game have so much dept in it! It might be tough for beginner but its the type of game where its hard to master but once you master it, its a lot of fun. This game is indeed very challenging against human player at first, but its also very satisfying when you manage to outsmart them, Great game overall !

When you die you have to wait two minutes to respawn, but it's even longer than 2 minutes if you count the time to play through the respawn animation (when you drop off the ship into play). Graphics are better than the alpha (i missed the beta) but they are nothing to write home about and the colour palette is not diverse enough. Gameplay involves a lot of running around until you finally find the monster. Aiming with the guns feels like it could be tighter. Aiming with the monster is pretty bad, Game would of benefited from operating in first person view versus third person and it would have made it much more immerse. Characters are weird and dialogue is beyond stupid. Would have been better if game allowed character creation, but instead you have to pick from a handful of weirdo's and you unlock more weird characters with better powers as you progress. Game revolves around accumulating "Experience Points" to raise your characters level and unlocking stuff so be prepared to grind. And if you prefer one character class over another, well you actually never get to choose: the server chooses for you, which mean accumulating "Experience Points" for you favourite character class can be hard because sometimes the games makes you play as another character class or the Monster. If you have real life friends online and can all manage to get a copy and be online at the same time then it can make for a fun experience. I paid 40$ for my PS4 copy (pre-order deal) and I would recommend you wait until it drops to 40$ or lower before you buy it. Do not buy this full price, it's too repetitive, has painfully long load times in multiplayer, has average graphics, aiming is weak, lots of grinding, and DLC $$$!!! Expand
