Very good core design, and potential playability, all wasted with cut content and that "let's grab the players cash with terribly expensive DLC" attitude.

If that was free-to-play game It would have been a hit. But no, you have to spend lot of money to buy the base and then spend even more money to get nicer stuff. It's very obvious effort to capitalize on players as much as possible,

It's very obvious effort to capitalize on players as much as possible, because the game right now is dull and repetitive. The monsters look cool, the hunters too, but games tend to get tedious, it's difficult to find players to play with other modes that hunt, the battles quickly become repetitive because there's not enough content - it's like half od the game or more is being held to be released as DLC. Shameful way to milk the players without offering enough in exchange for such steep price.

You just tried tp sell us a car, 2K Games. It doesn't have the windows, upper body or seats. but hey, it has the engine and can drive if you just duck there, see? But if we pay you more money, you shall provide us with the remaining parts. Not cool, guys, not cool.

Long story short - don't buy this game. Don't feed the corporate greed. Don't let them win.

    "Evolve" truly surprised me...

I never thought I could review a game lower than COD: AW or Destiny. I tried playing Evolve for about six hours, but was so bored that I couldn't force myself any further. When I first heard about the game, I found it to be an interesting concept. However, the "hunt" (not much hunting involved) isn't very exciting and the game handles poorly. The lack of fluidity and intuitiveness in the controls reminded me of a crappy 3rd party developed game (not all are crappy, but many are).

It is $20 Alpha stage game on steam. There are very few maps and characters (unless you buy skins), nothing to unlock, no customization, and not much of a reason to play. It literally has less content than Destiny (which, less face it, was extremely lacking in content).

Not worth $60 + the $60 skins if you happened to buy that crap. I honestly can't even recommend it for a rental, unless your insanely bored for a weekend.

    Absolutely a really great game.
There is, of course, some many mistakes, like the dlc on day one, but the game as itself bring so much fun that you forget that!!!
I really like this fresh gameplay, and the way that you have to act with intelligence make the repetitively gameplay diferente every time.
I really recomendo to play and put some effort on it, it's totally worth it.

It's never going to stop so let's just move on.

The game itself is very well done and polished. It's great to get Evolve and The Order 1886 in the same week and them completely solid without bugs compared to other games in this current generation. I have heard that there are some issues with the online community so my son and I have just been playing the SP. I will give MP a try later on after I have completely mastered all the hunters, monsters and maps. That will eliminate the not so friendly gamers from ruining my online experience.

We just unlocked the Kraken and are going for the Support robot hunter named Bucket. He looks amazing and has the flying sentries that we are very interested in. Really had a nice gaming moment playing as the support hunter. Val was getting destroyed I shot her with my shield projector saving her. The Wraith was going crazy on her but she was protected and lived through it. I am really enjoying the leveling/unlock process as it give you something to work for.

The graphics are very good, not The Order 1886 good but I am very pleased with them. The mechanics and game play are obvously from a stellar studio that's been round the block. The game is very balanced and technically sound. It's really fun following Daisy to the monster and trying to use the hunters abilities to take the monster down. The Trapper has been great using the orbital bombardment, shield projector and the cloak. There is a lot of strategy that is in play here. Following Daisy and then when you feel you are close cloaking the team and then trying use the orbital bombardment!

The monsters are very well done and easy to control. There is some amazing game play options with the monster. Evolving is really fun and allows you to become very powerful. Lots of options for wild life and with all the new maps and mode being offered free there is nothing to complain about. Turtle Rock has done it again. Now we just need to get them to make L4D3! Hopefully more people pick this game up as it deserves the sales.

As for the multiplayer aspect it adds a bit of fun but just like the solo experience the multilayer experience gets boring and repetitive very quickly as there are a limited amount of maps allowing for a minimal amount of things to do.

I really have no problem with DLC but when the game releases with so much DLC you know that they are up to no good....DLC should come out atleast 6- 1 year after the game has been released. Having DLC on day 1 just says to me..

Like I said, if this was F2P then it would of been fine even though I dont really care for free 2 play games, I like to pay $60 and get the full experience right away ( not these days anyway)

Being the monster is a great time and very tense when you're weak and unevolved, and a great trip when you reach full strength and become the hunter. The DLC that the game is being lambasted for is pretty shameful, but still cosmetic, so its presence doesn't create any balance issues. I'm sorry to turtle rock really had my hopes up for this game, and really from the first couple times playing doesn't seem like anything you do will make this game better, except by starting over from the basic concept and building a new game. My main problems with the game is lack of content that was described when first announcing the game, the idea of the tank battles from Left 4 Dead where panic induced struggles occur and barely missing swings from a monsters giant arm to avoid a death fall from 1,000 feet on top of a hospital, well there is none of that sense of urgency or panic that you get in this game, you do not feel like you are in control of anything, you are simply running around shooting weapons at monsters you basically never get a real look at or encounter that feels anything but important. I really would like to know how much time the developers spent playing the game and when did they think that the concept was ever coming together, you dont even feel like the monster is a physical being that can harm you other than by ghost mechanics, you struggle to use your jet-pack to stay close to the fight and keep an eye on a monster that quickly becomes un-important, i cant say enough bad things about this game its really overall just a terrible play. please slow the game mechanics down and make the encounters more intense and strategic maybe you will have a game. I like the idea of the game and the focus on team play but to be honest there is so much wrong with the game. The imconsistencies in match durations. I get games that last 3 min because the guy who plays the monster has no clue what he is doing. On the other hand sometimes we can't find the monster for 10 min the game is boring. Then if the monster is maxed out about 70-80% of the time we lose. It's just very hard to win at that point. The game needs more modes and more things to do not just hunting the monster. It needs some objectives like L4D. And then the DLC. There are two season passes one for monsters one for hunters. Seriously guys you want to milk us the gamers that much. The game was 40£ to start with. Then the both season passes 45£.
The joke about DLC: The Video Game is true to some extent. Is the game any fun? Sometimes yes but more often it's frustrating, boring and dull.
Not worth the full price at the time. Wait for a sale or maybe find a cheap used copy.

The concept itself is purely brilliant. Hunters hunting a otherworldly creature determined to evolve to a stronger being and survive. Sadly the gameplay falls short. The average match as a monster involves about 10-15 minutes of simply eating animals and nothing else, you're far too weak in the early forms to fight the hunters to you need to run until you reach your 3rd form. At this point the hunters don't have much else to do but chase after you and the flocks of birds you scare along the way. Then once the monster is at his strongest he can seek out the hunters or destroy a uninteresting large machine called a power relay.

Seeing as the game in general has such an egregious lack of content, what little it does have forces the player to play to unlock just about everything. It's somewhat insulting that the game was released with over 80$ of DLC. Most of which is $6 for just 3 skins... Who really gives a flying pigs ass cheeks about skins? I was also extremely dissatisfied to learn that the game only included 3 monsters in total, the rest would be released in future DLC. seeing as you're entire gameplay is dependent on the appeal of the characters gameplay, more than 3 beasts should be available. Thusly due to the lack of content, Evolve becomes old very quickly, After about 3 days of hoping it would get better, I quickly switched back to Dark Souls 2, and will quietly await Bloodborne.

On a side note, my last comment is about something I don't see many people bring up. I may be mistaken but are there people suppose to be on an alien planet? Because the few maps that this game does offer, are all set in an almost identical looking forrest, not unlike any average forest I've seen on earth, short of a few strange looking rocks. The concept artists really needed to get more creative with the environment....

And anyone who gives a game a 0 because it has something they don't like or a 10 because they want to counter the 0s is completely invalidating the idea of user reviews.

User reviews aren't supposed to be a tool for getting your way or supporting some cause, they're supposed to be an accurate representation of how you think the pros and cons stack up. Unless the game doesn't work, it isn't a 0, and if it isn't perfect, it isn't a 10. This is why critic reviews are usually the only ones worth anything.

As for the game, it has balance issues sometimes. It punishes anyone's failure, out of the 5 people involved, very harshly. It has replayability issues: it won't be fun after a few dozen hours. But a few dozen hours is as much as I really expect out of any game, short of a new Elder Scrolls game. And the punishing nature really makes a good plan coming together feel *#$%ing awesome, and really ratchets up the tension. Solid good game, light on features, looks and handles great. Solid 8 points.

You contribute by making the consumer aware of things they might not notice in those resources- not by giving your opinion on something as obvious as how the game looks... The problem w/ asymmetry, at least in this game, is that individual player skill dictates the outcome of the game too drastically- staying alive and playing well matters a bit less in games designed for balanced teams. Either you play with friends, or the game is a far too often a nightmare of frustration. Also, the game in general is, well, too frequently a sci-fi sprinting simulator. It might seem not so bad to watch, but playing it sucks. Total resident sleeper. Combat is flashy, but not deep (as either hunter or monster). Modes didn't feel all that special to me, I really wish there was a monster vs monster at release. Honestly though, my biggest beef with this game is that there simply was not enough content to justify the price. The game felt stripped and empty. Not necessarily for dlc purposes, mind you, but hollow nonetheless. Unlike others who expect readers to simply take their word for it (as though some content isn't valued subjectively) I urge any potential consumer to investigate more into what the game has to offer for its price. As is now, I'm giving this game the lowest score possible b/c if that's the price this game is to sell for, where is my other 3/4 content? Missing to be supplemented l8r as if I'm being treated? For some reason people have made it their crusade to burn this game at the stake, but have they even put in the time to realize what these developers have made? First, the entire game is something extremely new and innovative! With that alone I believe it deserves to be respected by the community. And much like all the nay sayers out there I was very upset over the entire DLC scandal but I still wanted to give it a chance. The fact that the user score is a 4.4 really upsets me because I know someone who was on the fence about purchasing the product would shy away after seeing these reviews, except this game is AMAZING!! I have never written a review or posted a comment anywhere on the internet, but Evolve has been getting such a bad wrap I know I need to defend it, especially after having such an amazing time playing. Like I mentioned before it is so innovative and fresh!! That's what caught me first! Then the depth really pulled me in. Even though there are only 3 characters in every class, everyone plays extremely different especially depending on the rest of team. Add in HUGE maps with living environments filled with man eating plants and packs of savage alien wolves and you get an experience like no other. People can whine all they want to about DLC and unfortunately we live in a world driven by the dollar, but I defend the fact that Evolve is sold for $60. By no means should it be free to play, especially when you consider the team of developers that put in an insane amount of their time to produce such a fantastic polished product. The game is perfectly balanced and the servers worked great on day one and some people find it ok to give the game a 2. A freakin 2!!! The insensitivity and ignorance! Play the game! Sink your teeth into it! I can barely find the time to write this review because I don't want to stop playing! With all that said, if you're looking for a fresh new experience in a genre that is so overdone in the wrong way with an immersive tactical combat system and one of the best multiplayer experiences the new generation of systems has to offer buy evolve now! If you refuse to purchase games that offer DLC and let that hinder you from experiencing something new and awesome or want to jump on the bandwagon of witch hunters ready to burn something at the stake feel free to read the rest of the reviews and believe them. With all that being said I wholly believe Evolve will remain one of my favorite games of all time for years to come with or without DLC and should be tried by everyone. Expand

Geweldige game om met vrienden te spelen. Easy to play hard to master.

The dlc wouldn't be a problem if the game was actually worth 60$. It's utterly bare bones. What depth? The meta of this game is as shallow as a raindrop. Little to no aiming skill is required considering you're shooting at, well, a big ass monster. Every monster has only 4 abilities. Abilities are simple, largely unoriginal, and casual friendly (in the worst of ways). The idea of the game may seem neat, but too often you play the player, not the "game." Besides, even though other modern fps' out there are not inherently asymmetrical in terms of team balance- I frequently find myself in 1 vs 3+ scenarios, so, nothing too innovating on that front. It's really the hunting experience that is the most unique- and its a bore. At least they were realistic about that. Coupled with average graphics, too little game modes, repetitive map themes, stupid a.i., and borderline worthless single player action- I'm hard pressed to say this game is anything other than a failure w/ some shallow fun attached. I highly recommend waiting to purchase despite player count drop (skill gap increase is actually minimal imo).

    - Enjoyable environmental layout and interesting characters, telling about the history of the colonisation.
    - Fun to play especially alone as the monster against other players.

    Cons:
    - Lack of content (limited to DLC) for example skin packs, season pass, with an exclusive content for a early buyer.
    - No meaningful story around main events (just randomly generated evacuation "story" and very lame ending) characters dialogue gets repetitive over time.
    - Character leveling does not satisfy enough, and only goal is just to reach the elite level, which unlocks elite skins for the characters (other skins only available with real money)

Evolve is a enjoyable game, but it gives the constant feeling that it could've been better without the microtransaction (I can't blame on turtle rock studios, 2K had control on them and decided how content was splitted) Evolve had potential to be the next ground breaking competitive FPS shooter.
The game broke apart when it got too repetitive and doesn't had any interesting story around the maps, characters or even monsters. e.g. From where monsters came from, characters talked about "secret agencies", abandoned planets that got dark and nobody didn't came back alive to tell what happened.
Evolve is a great fun for awhile, and I hoped I could understand more about the story and the world, but huge gaps around maps, characters etc.) ruins the experience a bit while you play.
You can only speculate what happened and create lores around maps and hunters.

This is my 2nd review, DO NOT take this too seriously. :)

Even a level 1 monster can tease the hunters and pinpoint the strong and weak players. The monster can then lead the hunters to an area of the map where the monster has the advantage and 'get trapped' by the hunters only to turn the table on them. In other words, its a deep game if you're willing to treat it like a deep game.

When I first saw this game it really got me hyped, a new type of multiplayer teambased game that just seemed to fill a certain hole in the FPS genre, sadly after testing the Alpha on PC I realized how bland it really is.

Repetitive game-play with the good old cat and mouse except I just found myself extremely bored after only a few games, the "early access" in form of the Alpha really turned me off in so many ways.

The last nail in the coffin was the reveal of DLCs and pre-order things for the game, you essentially don't have to play it to unlock stuff, yay for effort!

Aside from that it is a great game, new mechanics that take some time to learn and master. It is a multi-player game but you can play all the game modes offline if you don't want to play with people and get better at certain classes before taking it online.

I do have to say the lack of a campaign with an actual story does hinder it a bit but the little snip-its you get on each characters back story does provide some interesting insight into who they are and why they are here. Though I do wish it had more and I do find myself feeling a little let down on the amount of content but if you have 3-4 other friends it does offer a bunch of fun swapping roles.

Either way I have to say it is a great game and with the free DLC map packs and the promise of new modes I think it will still be fun and not just a DLC money grab like people think.

Still even if they would fix all the buggering things the price is far to high. For this price every buyer has the right to demand a real game not a small PvP gimmick.

The shooting mechanics are great, and the way 2k allows you to switch weapons with ease is fantastic. The "crysis" engine still looks beautiful as ever, and everything runs so smooth. Not once did I encounter any chugging. I loved the characters for their sense of humor. I found myself laughing a lot at the playful banter that happens before each match starts and during. One of the things I didn't like was the extremely boring sequences in-between fighting. To me, a lot of each match consisted of run, fight a little bit, run, fight a little bit, etc. The running part usually lasted a lot longer than each fight sequence. Another problem I ran into was not so much the game's fault, but my team mates. I highly suggest you and your close online friends play together and keep it at that, because the whole "lone ranger" thing happens to still be ingrained in most multi-player gamers. There were several instances when me and 2 other team mates were tracking the monster and the medic would run off the opposite direction. This is especially stupid because there is ABSOLUTELY no chance the medic alone could take down the monster. They are there to heal players and create weak points on the monster so that the assault class can do more damage. The trapper traps and the support class acts as the team's "buffer". That is, what I think, makes this game as good or as bad as it is. Its highly rewarding when you and your team mates win a match because it takes precision in attack and communication, and most of all team work. It is just too bad most players (that I played with) just do not understand this concept. Expand

shame on those who gave 0, is an obvious trolling/spamming.

lets put the big elephant aside first, i bought this game knowing what exactly i'm getting, an arena game. i don't care about the dlcs as long there's no pay to win model, i'm cool with dlc, they explicitly tells you what contents you are getting on evolvethegame website. FYI future maps n modes are free

    back to the game

there's no reason to fault this game on for being like some other games, which games does not take forms and shapes of existing games? To me this is a fresh take an interesting idea which i have doubts of my own that it will not hold your interest for long also for being straight-out repetitive.

    the good

    Monsters
Evolve! the monster mechanic is simple and intuitive, i just like the simple hunt n eat and evolve concept. it has its learning curve and its really not for everyone as the pressure to survive and evolve is sky high the moment you start. the tutorials are the best tips and i can tell you no other games explains the game to you for success like evolve does. when i got the combo right when caught in the frantic assault from the hunters, i managed to swipe the hunters at lv1. after unlocking the second monster kragen and using it was an entire new experience, needing to understand and play to your monsters strength.

    Hunters
i have yet to unlock the second tier and i'm already excited on the prospect of using them, simple straight forward skills and rewards you when the combo is right, ambushing circling monster is really satisfying. Very distinctive combat role (so what its like team fortress?) which many players are getting the hang of it online which the experience from day 1 to 2 is really encouraging. i'm quite pleasantly surprised to know that there are 12 characters on default as i was expecting a rip off of just 4 and others as paid dlcs.

    VFX
fantastic sound effects, booming sound on my steel series, i have no problem with the soundtrack which a review mention was stale, guess i'm overwhelmed by the intense battles and escapes going on to notice. graphics wise are good but nothing spectacular, its an average next gen looking game.

    Gameplay
playing to your role is essential, loving it, nothing is overpowered and everything can be counter with environments and strategies. Really solid gameplay which is the core of every game, the weight and hard hitting moves are on spot. as i have mention i can't wait to play with the new weaponry of the other tiers of characters. Very helpful bots which i don't find in other game, keeps the flow going at all times.

    the bad

lacking in monster evolving both in terms of design and skills, greatest down side of a game call evolve, its basically levelling up. i feel there's more dynamic to the hunters instead...i believe there should be at least a second tier of skills to each monster after evolving to lv 3. what a waste of concept...

No 60 FPS for PS4 is disappointing.

Playing by yourself doesn't do the core gameplay justice because it leaves out the most important aspect, team-work.This game is an absolute blast, like fighting a raid boss over and over again but much less scripted. The AI is excellent, and smart almost to a fault, but they cannot replace the sheer fun you will have coordinating attack plans with your crew of hunters. If you play by yourself it is very much just another FPS with some out-of-the-ordinary mechanics, but that's like playing L4D or an MMO by yourself. Friends make the experience fonder, and with such a huge gaming community rooted already in the fresh soils of Evolve, there is no shortage of players looking for a human companion to track monsters with. Campaigns in multiplayer games have become trite and boring, so I applaud them for building character more through random dialogue encounters throughout play without making us suffer through a sub-par campaign. There IS a "story" mode to speak of, but it works identical to Titanfall in that you are really just playing a string of multiplayer matches with AI instead of humans. Nothing much to speak of there, but honestly if you're looking for that brand new multiplayer fix, don't let the odd cluster of game bashers dissuade you, this is it. 9/10 Expand

I'd rate this game a 9 but gave it a 10 because of all the fake hate reviews from people who have obviously not played the game. Let me start off by going over what others have said.

    - "There's no variation, the DLC practices are an abomination and there's not enough content." --- Wow, this must be someone who only played the beta and read what others said about the DLC. There are multiple modes to this game. Besides playing online with others or solo with the bots, you have multiple modes like Rescue, Nest, Defend, and Hunt. You can play each individually across all the maps (Defend has it's own four maps), or in Extraction where you play across five game days (matches) where maps, modes, and bonuses are never the same. I don't need to go into detail because you can find details on all this on IGN, Gamespot, or any other gaming site.

The DLC is just skins. You are not buying new weapons or characters for the game. You get three boss monsters and twelve hunters with a lot of variety. I unlocked all the hunters over a couple of days and am working to level them up and unlock more perks. I love having all the choices, depending on what mode I'm playing. I also like each class is different and how you have to work together. You have your Support, Medic, Assault, and Trapper classes. It's more like Battlefield 4 than Left 4 Dead with how the classes work. The three monsters are very different too. You have to use different tactics against each monster. When fighting as the monster, you can pick you abilities and level them up based on the mode you are playing.

With the 12 maps, 3 Monsters, 12 hunters, multiple modes, and random bonuses in Extraction, the game always feels different. Again, you can get better at playing the game by just going up against the bots. They play as well as they did in Left 4 Dead.

    - "You buy the game for 60 dollars and then need to spend even more money to enjoy the game to its fullest" --- Not sure what game you bought for $60 and had to spend more to enjoy it, but it wasn't Evolve. I'm having more than enough fun with this game. I've played all the modes online and with the bots. I have no desire to buy any skins and you are not being forced to buy any of it. Why does everyone keep complaining about it? Remember the horse armor in Oblivion? I bought it because it made my horse look cool. I didn't complain about it because it was optional. Doesn't change the game in any way. Stop all the talk about the DLC.

There is another Monster and four more characters coming out in a few months. The Season Pass is $24.99 and will pay for this content. Do you have to buy it? No! The developer has stated that you will be able to play against the monster in your game and will see the other characters in games. You will just not be able to play them yourself unless you buy them. If you don't buy them, you are not being cut off from all the other players. It's not like COD where someone else buys the maps, but you can't play them now because you don't have the maps. This will not happen with Evolve. They stated that any new maps will be free. Myself, I'm going to get the Season pass when the new content is ready to be released. I'm really enjoying the game.

    - " is a mediocre first person shooter (surprise surprise!) that brings nothing new to the genre" --- Where have you played a game like this before? I really feel like I'm out on a hunting trip in Jurassic Park! I have a blast. Sometimes we get to the monster early and kill it and other times we are hunting until it reaches level 3 and we head it of at the base. I do think they have some balancing to do, but they have already stated that they are working on this. I'm still having a great time with the game. I'm trying to level up each of the hunters now.

    -----------------------------

Take time to read some reviews from sites like IGN or Game Informer. They have been playing the game for some time now and have even had play time with the developers. I'll believe what Ryan McCaffrey says over someone who is just bashing the game because they think there is a DLC issue or not enough content. Looking at most of the user reviews, it looks like people are just trying to bring down the score without even really trying the game.

Read real reviews for more info on the game. That is why I decided to buy it. It is really different from the other games I've played. The graphics are top notch and really put you into that world. With the day one patch, load times are better than they were in the beta. This is one game that is really getting a raw deal from users just looking for something to bash. The more I play it, the more I'm enjoying it. You can't play this like COD or just any other shooter. You need to pick the right hunter for the mode you are playing and monster you are fighting.

(Sorry for any grammar or spelling problems. I just typed this up and didn't proof it. I just want to get home and play more Evolve!)

No other game offers the feel of Evolve, and the more that you play the deeper and more rewarding the experience gets. 60 dollars is a heckuva price tag, but unlike other AAA titles (all of which are getting more expensive now) Evolve does something new, and it does it well. Good games have a great sense of rising and falling action, often including four or five different skirmishes before the final fight happens - but there's always the lingering threat that if you are not on top of your game, one side or the other will end the game immediately. It's the best multiplayer game I've played in a decade. Expand

Most of the bad press seems to stem from the level of DLC available on launch day, but most are special skins for monsters or a few new hunters (despite there already being 12 available). Evolve does have a grind factor in order for you to unlock new monsters and hunters, but no more so than any good game out there has. Who wants to be handed everything on a platter on day 1? Not Me!!

All in all, Evolve is a great online game with awesome mechanics and a fluid combat system...and oh yeah YOU GET TO BE A FREAKING MONSTER.

I was very excited for this title. It became immediately apparent however, that a very large amount of content was stripped from the core game to be sold separately as DLC. With so many better alternatives out there, this is hardly worth your time. This is one title you can safely pass on.

Excellent game that gets better the more you play it. At First Monsters feel like a great feat to take down, but group up with a well coordinated team and its fun and challenging. Its not skill like Call of Duty, its skill as in tactics, timing, and communication that make this a superior shooter game. Best part is if you feel like going solo you can still have just as much fun as the monster.

All the negativity scared me a bit at first because this was a game that I was really looking forward to. But I put all the negativity aside and did some research of my own, I also read/viewed various reviews and feedback from people playing the game. I bought the game and I have not regretted my decision for a second. This is one of the games lately that I am truly enjoying, and have been playing non stop for hours. It was a steep learning curve, but when you start to get a grip of the basics you will be rewarded so. I have come to a stage with games where i love real challenges and not a game that I understand the minute I start to play.

This game is not something you will master over the first days of playing, this game is different every time you play, and you learn new things every time. You will experience unique situations that will only happen once. It is a dynamic game that has a lot of potential to be a game that will last for decades. But you need to be prepared to have an open mind to learn on your way and adapt to the every new challenges the games give you.

The negative reviews claiming balance issues are players that can't comprehend how to play and consistently lose or get killed. I see none of that and think the game has very little to no balance issues at all.

The game is incredibly fun, so many times I say just one more match then go on to play for a few more hours. The ranking system is rewarding enough and borderlines a little on grinding, however with how much fun I find in playing the game the grinding doesn't bother me in the least. This isn't Destiny level grinding which is downright grueling.

The gameplay is fast, fluid, no server or connection issues. How many games launch where you can say that?

The other option for them is to probably delay it another month. Most games have a day one patch, this isn't anything new. There is a story, it has a 5 day campaign with 800,000 possible outcomes of bonus effects and game modes so in that there are 800,000 campaigns. Each monster is completely different and unique, has strengths and weaknesses. Each hunter feels badass in it's own way.

Here's my review of evolve after about 10 hours or so playing:

First, my score is 8/10, but like others, I wish to balance out the odd ratings this game is getting.

First off, the monster is everything I hoped it would be. You start off weak, and stealth is the name of the game. I didn't really truly appreciate how to play a monster until I played a hunter and saw just how they track the beast. Sneak past the birds (so you don't scare them and give away your position) and make sure you keep your distance as you feed. It's a real rush if the hunters corner you while you're still at evolve level one because, unless you're very good, you aren't going to survive a straight up brawl with them. I lost several matches as the monster initially because I hadn't figured out the balance between stealth, distance and when to strike. Of course, one way to offset this initial weakness is putting 3 points into a single skill in the beginning to give yourself a bit of oomph if you DO get into some trouble. You definitely feel the power as you evolve. By the time you hit level 3, you feel like you're some sort of Kaiju superbeast.

Speaking of evolving up: If you play as the monster, you're given 3 skill points to divide into 4 skills. Each time you evolve you're given an addition 3 points to put into these skills. In order to unlock perks and other monsters, you need to fulfill certain skill requirements. For example, in order to unlock the next monster, the Kraken, I had to do X amount of damage with Flame breath, charge, smash and rock throw over the course of several matches. It actually didn't take that long and I expected far worse. The controls, at least on the PS4 seem fluid and combat is pretty easy to control. I guess my only gripe is that I wish you could climb up cliffs that serve as the "wall" of the level because sometimes as I was running for my life, i tried to climb up a cliff that I thought was climbable only smack into it Wile E. Coyote style---but this is a minor gripe.

The monsters play quite differently as well. I only have 2 of the 3 unlocked, but there definitely is a big difference between say, the Goliath and the Kraken. With the Goliath, I feel like I'm probably as close as I'm going to get to playing a Tyranid Carnifex or an Ultralisk. You're beefy, you pack a punch and little is as satisfying as charging through a group of hapless hunters and then throwing a rock on them. The Kraken on the other hand can fly, is great at escaping and does insane amounts of AOE damage. I'm not sure which one I like better at this point--I switch out between them.

All that being said, playing as the hunters is a bit of a yawn for me. While there are certain aspects that I like--the tracking is pretty cool. You can follow monster footsteps, you get alerted to carrion birds to help track the monster's position and the actual fighting with the monster is intense, but it just doesn't live up the amount of fun that I have playing the monster itself. I do get the feeling that playing with friends as the hunters is probably a **** ton of fun, because teamwork is everything. I just played a game where I nearly took out the team as a level one monster because they were morons and split up. I've won the last 5 matches as a monster without evolving past level 2 (which sets you even with the hunters in terms of power--level 3 is where you start exceeding what they can do) because of the lack of coordination between hunters. That being said, I expect that to get better once people have a bit more play time with the game.

Is it worth $60? Eh, hard to say. Maybe? I'll probably side on the "no" side, but I'm not going to deny that the game, at least the as the monster delivers on the fun. If I didn't have to study, I'd spend the rest of the day playing it. The DLC now is pretty much all cosmetic and really shouldn't detract you from buying the game.

TLDR: 8/10 for fantastic monster combat, playing as hunters is a bit "meh"

I was pretty much expecting Left 4 Dead and while its there, it lacks something major.

Proper match making.and control of match making.

This is what really kills the whole game for me.

I've played this game for about three days now for online and have only played as the monster twice, and the Assault Class about 5 times. Three days...that's a lot of game time. What was the point of asking me to pick the top classes I would like to play as, when I can barely have the chance to play as the top two? Let us set up our own lobbies and be able to pick our own class or join a random in progress game as said class. I have zero desire to be a trapper or Medic. ZERO DESIRE. I HATE those the classes This is seriously the only problem I have with this game. The lack of actual control of creating and setting up matches. Everything is....random.. I LOVE this game and enjoy it greatly...but my god.

LET US SET UP OUR OWN GAMES AND PICK OUR OWN CLASSES LIKE ] L4D

now the DLC everyone is complaining about...Its simple. Dont buy it. Vote with your wallets. Right now its useless skins that serve no purpose nor give you an advantage

Now $15 for ONE Monster? That is steep. Steep enough to the point that I will not waste $15 on one monster. or $7.00 on ONE hunter. I will simply not buy this DLC, like I do with 98% of games. I seriously believe the last form of DLC I brought was for Fallout 3 and that's because it was actually worth it.

All the skins in that store though should be unlockable by winning a certain amount of matches. They are skins. Just re-textures or recolors of current outfits. Not worth the $2.99 I personally feel. If IO HAD to pay for this stuff, at the most I would only pay $00.99. These skins do nothing for the game play, nor do they change the actual game flow. The Season Pass is obviously a rip off conceived by both Gamestop and 2K. The Season Pass for $24.99 only gives you three new hunters and skins for three monsters. Thats it. It doesn't cover future content. Hence the name "Hunting Pass" but notice how We over at Gamestop sells it as a "Season Pass"? yeah. Be smarter people. I never push DLC onto people unless my manager is there and thats because I have to or I'll get fired.

For 60$, you are not buying a complete game. Day one has a lot of DLC content that can be purchased, similar to apps from your phone. Basically, it's bad business to make a consumer pay full price for a game at 60$ and on top of that use a free to play business model, charging for everything.

The thing is, the game has no RPG elements in it. So when you only have 3 monsters to play with and a handful of hunters you will get to know them fast. And they will become boring

I still gave it a 0, even though its a polished game, to compensate for all the reviews from kids who are unable to look objectively at a game they just bought.

It is very important for a developer to make money, but Evolve is not worth $60. The game is fun for the first 30 mins and then it's boring, they do this on purpose so that you feel that you need to buy DLC to have more fun with it.. This is not right. They should of made the game F2P if they wanted to go this route. They know that people are dumb enough to buy it too. I'm glad that there are some gamers that are smart enough not to support crap like this..kudos to all of you.

DLC is okay in my book, but when you buy a game on release day and there is already $85 worth of DLC then
you can clearly see where the developers priorities are ..

Cash grabbing at its finest people... The people that support this crap also support crappy unfinished games...

2/10 for releasing an incomplete game and selling the rest as DLC... These are not developers they are snake oil salesmen (charlatans)

This game is not worth the $60 entry fee. Anyone giving it anything higher than a 6 is either an employee who created the game, or a teenager that is new to gaming. If you are either of those then yes, this game is possibly a 8+.

If you're not do not buy this game. Use a rental service first. I promise that you'll thank me.

The graphics are decent enough. But the game itself is boring after about 2 hours. There is literally nothing to do other than chase a monster around, shot at it, chase it some more, shoot at it... Etc. What's worse is the game relies heavily on teamwork, which lets be honest is almost impossible with strangers and no mics.

This game feels like it took no more than 6 months to create. The other time was spent making sure that once you have spent your $60 you'll have to spend more. $15 characters? $3 skins? If you wanted the complete game it would cost you close to $200. That's right. You read that correctly. $200 for a game that literately offers nothing in terms of game play.

Go a head and buy this game if you enjoy wasting $60 for little content and a game that gets boring quick. It's not my money. But please remember this when the next game you love is released for $60 and you must by the ending, or see a screen pop up that says "please pay $29.99 to continue playing" as that's what you're telling the developers your comfortable with.

I would understand if this game offered a lot for your $60. I would. But as of right now this game is a massive joke and spits in the face of gamers as being acceptable.

It's a cool game, but, you pay $60 to play a small part of the game and if you want to get the rest of it, you need to pay more $85 for the rest of the content. It sucks, but you can get complete games for the same price, if not less.

Great Game if you are into Coop and group PvP. Try out Evacuation Mode if you get bored with regular matches. Ty out "individual" with a buddy if you want to make it even more lasting, editing the maps at your wims. Or even play solo.

Aside from the ingame (purely cosmetic) shop, the prices are the same as with every other game. Take Borderlands e.g. - main game + season pass = same results (or near).

It will always be the same recycled thing/experience at the end. It's easy to make that free specially if you are going with the billion dlcs model... but you all don't need to worry because what really changes the game and add diversity to your gameplay(and not much in the case of hunter because the most part are just stronger versions of the basic hunters you don't have to unlock) can be bought through awesome DLCs, all of them wonderfully priced as just 25% and 14% of the game price for new monsters and hunter(each unit of course, 2k has deep pockets to fill). It is so awesome, so much fun, so much content...but not. Oh and also the already lacking content is partially locked in the beginning because they know only the innocent players grinding can keep this mess alive for more than two weeks. It's a shame psn is not willing to offer me a refund. Don't make the same mistake as me. For those who already fell into this trap, welcome to the club of those who paid a full aaa game price for a game that should be f2p, unfortunately you are not alone brothers and sisters. Expand

This game, like Left For Dead, was overhyped. At least unlike Left For Dead it is not being overrated. I advise you rent it in coordination with a group of friends on a weekend. Play, return the rental and you will never revisit this game again. Wash, rinse, repeat........or instead evolve and drop, flush, forget.

The game concept of the game is good but these action will keep me away from this SH and publisher.

There was just a hype push to sell it at the beginning for full price before converting to f2p. I am not talking about games like Star Wars the Old Republic or Defiance. These games started out as legitimate pay to play game that were faulty and went f2p to survive. Everything about Evolve is set up to be f2p except it is not YET. This game is fun, but wait until it is f2p like it was built to be.

If you hadnt done your research going into the game, yes it's mostly online. Why do people have such a problem with that? CoD is mostly online and very few actually get the game for the single campaign anyway.

The one problem Ive had with Evolve is with the servers itself and the match making. Many times Ive been in a game and disconnected or I join a game as the monster and Im at half health being attacked by the hunters. imo I rather start a game and fail it then pick up in a fail.

    Thats just one person's opinion.

The original developers of L4D are back with a new game and it's pretty damned good. Much like their previous game, the focus is on co-operative teamwork and is best experienced with friends. You can play with random people online, but this can be frustrating if you get stuck with people that refuse to use their mics or don't play their role.

You can play with random people online, but this can be frustrating if you get stuck with people that refuse to use their mics or don't play their role.
The basic premise is akin to Alien. You and your fellow hunters must track and dispose of an alien that is reeking havoc on a colony planet. You can play as one of 12 hunters who are separated into 4 unique classes. Assault - the damage dealer, medic - the healer, support - pretty self-explanatory, and the trapper who is responsible for tracking down the monster. Within each class there are 3 different characters, all with their own unique abilities. For example, one medic has a healing gun and must try and keep everyone alive. Another one lacks the healing gun but can revive fallen teammates that would otherwise be dead and have to wait 2 minutes to respawn. And the third healer has a healing grenade launcher instead of a beam which is weaker, but has an area of effect.
And then of course there's the monsters. This is an asymmetrical game, 4 vs 1. The monster isn't controlled by AI but instead is controlled by an actual person. There are 3 monsters to choose from. Goliath, much like the tank in L4D. He's a big lumbering monster that's quite strong. Kraken, who can fly. And Wraith, the sneaky assassin. Each monster starts out rather weak and must avoid the hunters while also killing and eating wildlife. Eating wildlife increases your armor and will eventually allow you to evolve, or level up. You can evolve twice, getting stronger each time. Some wildlife will also provide you with temporary buffs, such as increased damage or more stamina. These buffs can also be picked up by the hunters, so make sure not to leave their bodies uneaten. The monsters each have four abilities that you can choose how you want to level. Maybe you'll just make 2 of your powers stronger, not even opening up your fourth ability. Or maybe you'll balance them all out to allow more variety in your attacks.
There's a couple of different game modes. Hunt is the basic mode. In this mode, the hunters simply need to kill the monster. The hunter has more options. He can try to kill all the hunters, but if one survives and gets away for long enough, the dead hunters will respawn. Or if the monster gets to level 3, he can try and take out the hunters power station. The monster will be at it's strongest at this point, but the hunters will know exactly where he'll be.
There's a campaign mode of a sort. Evac mode will go through 5 rounds. Some of those rounds will be the basic hunt mode and some of them will be either rescue or nest. The final round is always Evacuation. Nest and rescue are much alike but with each side switching roles. In nest the monster must defend his eggs. Rescue has the hunters finding human survivors and escorting them to dropships while the monster tries to kill them. And Evacuation has the hunters defending 3 power relays, one after the other against a stage 3 monster who now also has some level 1 minion goliaths.
With each match, the winner will get an advantage in the next round. Maybe the monster will successfully defend his eggs. This will lead to his minions having more armor than normal.
Although the focus of this game is online, there is a single player option that plays just like the online, but with bots filling in. The game is pretty light on story, but makes up for it with interesting character dialogue that fleshes out the hunters. And the atmosphere is great. Feels like a good sci-fi movie (like the previously mentioned Alien, though maybe not as serious or dark).
Character progression is achieved through using a characters abilities. The game starts you with one monster and one hunter from each class. Progression doesn't take all that long though. If it's your primary goal, then you can unlock the next character in one or two round of the basic hunt mode. Progression also continues after unlocking characters by giving you more perks to choose from and slight improvements to your abilities.
I was a huge fan of the L4D series and this game has a very similar feel. The winner isn't decided by who has the quickest reflexes but rather by using strategy (and teamwork if your playing as hunters).
With all the different hunters, monsters, and perks - there's plenty of re-playability to be had. Plus there's 12 different maps to play on.
And now for the required clarification on DLC. If you want every single piece of content currently available, it will cost you. However, all the DLC right now is purely cosmetic. There's a season pass, of course, which will provide new hunters, monsters and some skins. You are not required to buy it though. All new maps and game modes will be free.
