Im glad people are finally taking a stand against the lootbox system in gaming. Ea gets a point for that at least. Its sad now days that they have to patch games post release as i as i am not a fan of this tactic by gaming standards. Especially unfinished fighting games. They should have reworked the gound and clinch system exactly like THQ undisputed 3 from 2012. The striking has little vairety for my tastes and The AI clinch spams. I could go on and on, but id save your money and wait for a sale people. P.s. THQ Nordic should buy the rights back and make ufc how it should have been all along. Expand

One step forward and ten step back for absolutely no reason in the fourth installment of a franchise. Only EA can pull this off. What a waste of money for a garbage of a game.

It uses the same button reading style fifa does and instantly counters you with deadly power and accuracy. Punch slipping isn't a thing in the game, all the right stick does is change which exact point on your head is punched or kicked. The clinch is, honest to god, the only actual genuine improvement, i loved it even if it's too easy to get in to and out of.

Career mode is legitimately just a copy and paste of UFC 3. Coach Davis is a nice addition for the first hour until he completely disappears (save for some voice over work in training drills). Earning new strikes/holds/subs/takedowns/transitions is virtually the same as before, although they gatekeep the moves more heavily with the in-career currency, so you don't earn many new moves till you're starting to make real money some 10-12 fights in, and even then it's a slow process because you run out of cash and/or the time aspect of a fight camp very quickly. Earning ranks from the amount you use a move is great idea in theory, but unless you just sit there in a training session and spam a move there's some that will be very useful that never get past level 1, so the implementation feels like a first draft (it does show some promise but needs loads of work). Microtransactions abound in the character creation/cosmetic side of things. They try to mask this by providing you yet another in game currency, but honestly the "coins" can maybe get you 2 or 3 reasonable items after 15 hours of play vs their EA tokens (have to buy them with real money) can get you 10 times the amount if spent even remotely wisely for $4. We know what you're doing guys, so get it through your thick skulls; WE. HATE. THAT. S**T.

Much like some of their other sports titles, EA have introduced "Adapative" AI, which basically means it figures out what you're no good at and uses it (and they're patented "input reading" technology) against you even if there's no way in hell your opponent would realistically do that, IE, just fought Justin Gathje and despite his career of 0/1 on takedowns in 25 fights, he immediately shoots and takes me down, and continues to do so until i start throwing things around the room after 4 dozen restarts

Grappling? They've done absolutely nothing here despite their claims. They've got a secondary gameplay overlay (the so called simplified mode, but really it's just a dumbed down version which obliterates any and all variety) to make you think they've changed it, but it's just as bad in a number of ways as the previous version. Switching to legacy/hybrid mode takes the colorful "simplified" veneer away to reveal it's exactly the same system with exactly the same problems (some of them smaller and some of them bigger)

Overall in ring immersion is way down on UFC 3, commentators are great in real life but in game they're constantly stuck in the middle of 3 minute monologues while things are happening (i once had DC still explaining a hold i think while Buffer was reading out the winner of the fight) and also have DC constantly screaming "IT'S DONE" or "FIGHT'S OVER" every 2nd leg kick. In between rounds there's no emphasis placed on anything that actually happens in a fight, it feels really boilerplate and completely glossed over by the devs. The "choose your own adventure" method for in ring celebrations/pump ups is... just plain awful, feels like a WWE game, it's so labored and obnoxious and counter to real in ring behaviour that it doesn't have any real life feel to it what so ever. Bruce sounds like the developers really don't like him and they deliberately messed with his audio recordings.

Online? Well we all know EA have no idea how to implement an online mode.

Verdict: I can't wait for the full releas... oh, this isn't the demo.... oh dear.

The learning curve it's so steep here I've returned it after 2 days of getting my career mode character knocked out every time I try to start.
There doesn't seem to be a way to change the career mode difficulty (I've searched everywhere online) so you're destined to fail.

I tried Madden once (as a UK guy) and it was equally as confusing but I think If I had enough desire for the sport there is a way to learn Madden, this game however, I just can't see it.

There's always the argument that making a game easy will kill the game, and fine, I'll give you that... but this is unplayable... if you want new fans and players of the games then you need to have a path that feels rewarding... getting knocked out and not being able to knock the com out in career early on is not the way to do it.

Really bad game from a new player viewpoint.

You should have 100% customisability by now... your 4 games in and the CAF has not changed... no new body types or better just use a scaling option like the WWE games do. I should be able to create all the different fighters I want from history with scary accuracy and change their records to reflect their IRL records and be able to have fun not feel restricted by who you've hand picked as the 10% who will make it to your roster.. I should be able to pick from 10 different kinds of kicks and punches for each input to give it a great unique feeling and change them for my CAFs so fighters I create really look and fight the way their IRL counterparts do.. but your focusing so hard online play and pushing out what we even had in UFC 3 being able to change attributes and moves that I will not be buying any more UFC games unless you HEAVILY invest in CAF customisation and really make it open-ended create anyone you want like the WWE games

I AM A HUGE MMA fan I train, I grew up watching it from the age of 9 and it really pisses me off to no end to see EA UFC be this bad...

Everything else is pretty decent ... oh and the paywall with buying tokens and stuff is beyond stupid.

you've lost a potential long term player because you've refused to evolve your CAF customisation.

Otherwise, after you take the second belt, the strongest simple starts in your career, and nothing happens. You have to protect the belt from the same opponents, because there is almost no progress in the ranking. 2) allow the player to create tournaments on back yard and kumite. 3) Kumite mode is cool, but **** when you hit a person in the face with these gloves, the whole face should be covered in blood. Do more damage, the entire arena should be covered in blood in this mode. 4) the same with the back yard. Remove the gloves from the fighters, I myself fought in the street, we did not have any gloves on. Remove the gloves and add the blood. These modes will become popular and adored. Expand

The clinching is supposed to be apart of your game plan but it’s hard to use it for anything but dealing damage, there’s only like 3 clinch positions and it’s easy to escape from cause all you gotta do is move backwards, you can’t do a clinch based strategy like fighters like Kamaru usman do to try and out point their opponents because it is so easy to get out of it and there’s not much variety in it, clinching feels better and worse than 3s cause 3s had the ability to use the clinch to control your opponent for long periods of time and sort of trap your opponent if you were good enough at defending transitions but the transitions look way to effortless in the clinch and on the ground but like I said 4 has really good animations so the 3 positions you can do in the game look beautiful..... unfortunately the grappling still has issues the transitions have prettier animations but they still look way too effortless and almost like your training on a dummy they should have made the transitions longer and more drawn out like a struggle because in reality that’s what grappling is, two guys fighting for control, one guy tries to go somewhere, the other tries to stop him from arriving, but grappling in the ufc games in general just doesn’t feel right, they did make some of the transitions longer and feel more like a struggle, but not all..... striking like I said is super smooth and feels really good, every time you land a good combination, it feels amazing because it looks amazing, the striking animations look a lot less robotic than they did in 3 and genuinely look like real punches and kicks, the story modes the main attraction of the game and is a huge step up from 3s repetitive and clunky story mode that really didn’t flow well at all, 4 introduces new ways to find yourself into the ufc, which is really nice for if you want to replay the story mode with a different fighter and have a different journey..... overall I’d have to give it a 8.5/10 not an incredible step up from ufc 3 but a step up nonetheless Expand

UFC 4 is my first venture into the game's franchise and there's no health bars, only bars that show how much pain is being dealt to your individual body parts and even *THOSE* UI bars are so small enough that sometimes you don't pay attention to them.

And you really don't need to because the amount of animations in this game is staggering to me. You get punched directly in the face and when you block, your fighter shows the pain and sudden jolt reaction of taking that sudden hit as if he reacted like a real person. Get popped in the face several times, and that same block turns into an anxious and trembly defensive look in such a way that you KNOW to back away from your opponent without the need of a health bar... and that's the great thing about this game, is that you can FEEL the fighter you are playing, and learning the various styles of martial arts feels different through most of them. One fighters jab may be entirely different (hit power and feeling) based upon a fighter's height and reach. And the way any strike will land never instigates a 'canned' animation system to where you feel an animation 'activate' like in most games where you can see "Animation A" transitions to "Animation B".. It all just animates dynamically.

I don't know how this all works, but I hope the devs maintain this game as time goes forward, because I think it could make this franchise into a thing of beauty, especially going into the PS5. I'm hyped for what a UFC 5 would look like. I give this game a 10, because it's a breath of fresh air in the gaming industry, and we need more of this, .. it's nice to see something great in AAA that's not an FPS.

EA Sports UFC 4 is a solid game. It is ever so slightly improved over UFC 2 & 3. The stand up feels more fluid now that the clinch is free flowing as part of stand up. Grappling still sucks. Not sure who thinks holding your stick left or right waiting for a meter to fill is engaging, but they are wrong.

Sound effects are okay. Graphics are still sub parts for a late 8th generation
