This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved this game. I thought it was a great combination of Mirrors Edge Parkour gameplay and Dead Island with the Zombie Apocalypse build random stuff out of other random stuff. I was amazed on the graphics quality and the way the game handled. The down side is although the story line was great and easy to sink into it was met with bland ending of just an action sequence to finalize the game. I've seen too many games this day and age that giving you this huge rush of trying to get to the end to meet the final boss and the climax of the game ends up being near the low point. I definitely recommend this game to anyone who is looking for a great time and laughs with friends. Expand

One of the best games available on PS4 until now. The story is not the main force of Dying Light, but the music, the sound effects, the graphics, the gameplay & the possibility to play the entire game in coop make me think that Dying Light is near to be a must-have if you like zombies games.
The atmosphere of Dying Light is also remarkable.

    8/10 without hesitation.

If Mirror's Edge and Dead Island had a love child, she'd be named Dying Light. ThatIf Mirror's Edge and Dead Island had a love child, she'd be named Dying Light. With gorgeous graphics, great controls (depending on your ability to execute them) and a creepy atmosphere that had me unknowingly biting my tongue as night began to fall, you get an immersive, open-world Zombie apocalypse experience that transports in a way very few Zombie games (if any) have done before. That being said, if you've ever played Dead Island before you'll notice a few of Techland's and many other open-world developers clichéd approaches to storyline filler, most notably the infamous and incessant "fetch quests" that too often can pull one out the realism of what an open-world game should strive to achieve. You take it with a grain of salt as the overall experience is still spine-tinglingly immersive. However, in a real apocalypse scenario I would not be out scouring the world for crayons or coffee for people too frightened to venture out themselves. Sure you can just decide not to be the city's errand boy to a certain degree, but you're compelled to help for the rewards and you figure maybe you'll just randomly stumble upon these items anyway...so sure...I'll pick them up if I see them. The voice acting is pretty decent and the dynamic weather system and day/night cycle is a significant part of the backbone of the experience, hence the name "Dying Light". Rummaging through buildings and picking the locks of vehicles looking for supplies while contending with Zombies is a manageable experience, or racing for an air-drop trying to get it before the merciless gang of survivors beat you to it, while fun, is not particularly challenging. However hearing over the radio that night is falling advising you to find shelter adds a level of urgency and fear because once night falls you're screwed and the simplest of tasks becomes a fight for survival that you may not come out of. Some of the most enjoyable experiences were getting caught outside at night and finding a little shack or sewer pipe to hunker down in, crouching still with your light off while you hear the grunts and moans of Zombies around you outside, searching for a meal. Do they pass by your little hiding spot or do they happen to stumble in or spot you through a window, letting out a blood curdling scream and alerting every Zombie in the area of your presence, prompting you to either fight or run? It's all random so unless you've found a designated Safe House you never feel safe, which is great. The Parkour element brings open-world to a whole new level and it makes you realize that previous open-world games were not as "open" as we'd have liked them to be when you can't scale a building, jump from rooftop to rooftop reaching for a ledge to grab or eventually the use a grappling hook to essentially go where ever you like. The upgradeable weapon system is great too, but early on the weapons are weak and basic which I believe turned off a lot of gamers who played for a day or two and wanted their money back. I personally enjoy having to scrounge for a plank of wood and knocking a few heads back and forth, hoping it will last long enough to beat my foe. It adds to the realism and the need to be resourceful and inventive in your attacks. After a while though the weapons become more useful and the satisfaction from lopping a head off with one swipe of your machete, or severing the arm or hand of a Zombie as they reach out to grab you doesn't really get tiring. There is no limit to the damage you can inflict. This was apparent the first time I split one right down the middle. If you're out of weapons or just like being a bit more efficient and clever as opposed to the hack and slash, a simple firecracker thrown into an oil slick will attract your foes and light them up. With a 3 pronged ability system you begin to unlock other attacks and abilities which are also integral parts of your arsenal. Such as drop kicking a zombie into an array of hazards and impaling them on spikes and bent bars on windows that were once used to barricade survivors until the creatures inevitably broke through. Point is, you have options outside of your weapons. The online portion is enjoyable and adds a new element to the gameplay. Whether you team up with a few friends and battle the hoards, or take on the an invading player in the form of a super zombie it's a lot of fun. If you choose to "Be The Zombie" you'll enjoy a whole new upgradeable character, full of unlockable abilities to help you eradicate your human adversaries. Hunt them down, stalking them in the shadows while watching them with infrared vision. Let out a scream and watch their movement scramble taking satisfaction that you're getting in their heads, then pounce when the time is right. There's a lot to enjoy in this game, and if you can take the clichés and, at times, pointless fetch quests with a grain of salt you'll see that the pros definitely outweigh the cons and there is no other Zombie game out there like it. Another year, another zombie game, but how does Dying Light fare in this crowded genre? In this review I will give my opinions and ratings for the following: Gameplay, Story, Sound, Graphics, Last Impressions. This will be followed by final score for the game.

    Gameplay: 8/10
    - For the most part, the parkour system in Dying Light is actually done surprisingly well. There is a clear feeling of momentum and pretty much everything you'd expect to be able to climb, you can. The combat is good. Weapons have some weight to them, and chopping limbs off is fun for a while. With that being said, the gunplay in the game is poorly done and feels very overpowered. Once you get your hands on a gun of any sort, the game loses any suspenseful feeling it once had.

    Story: 6/10
    - A cliche, over the top story is what you expect in a zombie game in today's day and age, and that's exactly what Dying Light gives you. The story features countless characters that you won't care about, and a main villain that seems as though he's trying his hardest to imitate Vaas from Far Cry 3. The plot twists can be seen from a mile away and the ending gives no feelings of resolve or satisfaction.

    Sound: 7/10
    - Classic zombie game sounds here. Nothing special, but nothing to really complain about. Most voice acting is done well enough, though some is not so good. Weapons sound okay, and chopping apart a zombie sounds how you'd expect it to. No notable musical moments, not that you'd expect a musical going into a zombie game.

    Graphics: 9/10
    - This is one of the areas where the game shines. Graphics look excellent, and for the most part the game runs very fluidly. The views you get from the higher building tops (especially in the 2nd area) are marvelous. Zombie look gross as you'd want them to, and some of the ones you encounter can be quite terrifying at first. The day/night cycle looks really good.

    Last Impressions
    - Dying light is a good game, but no more than that. I played most of the game with a friend, and if it hadn't been for the co op, which is quite a bit of fun, I may have not even finished it. The game doesn't throw anything at you that you wouldn't expect (story wise and mechanically) but can still be some quick fun and is a good pick up and play game. This game gets a 7 from me, but that is based off of my co op experiences, when played alone I would give the game a 6.

    Final Score: 7/10

Dying Light is an intense thriller in which the protagonist, Kyle Crane, works to save the doomed residents of Harran. Running the streets at night is a video experience which will get your pulse racing. In addition to the night survivalDying Light is an intense thriller in which the protagonist, Kyle Crane, works to save the doomed residents of Harran. The was marketed as a survival game, especially after the sun goes down and the zombies get faster and more aggressive and the viral zombies appear. Running the streets at night is a video experience which will get your pulse racing. In addition to the night survival modes the story attempts to really ratchet up the intensity and draw you in, sometimes succeeding, more often failing.

Dying Light is also a beautiful game and the graphics are 1st rate. The game has everything you would expect from an open world, including side quests and ways to waste time, however the game lacks the feel of Skyrim or GTA 5 where you could spend hours of game time doing nothing. In many ways that is a good thing. This is the zombie apocalypse, wasting time watching TV or playing cards or golf would not make much sense.

The game is driven by the free running parkour mode, and its well done. Kyle can climb virtually anything although the game does have some glitches in that there are things that Kyle can't climb that it feels as if he should be able to. This glitch does not ruin the fun though. Its incredibly fun to free run, climb and jump through the streets of Harran. The main method of survival is to avoid fighting (although at some point you will eliminate a zombie horde by yourself with only a sword just for the fun of it) and many times it involves making very fast free running choices while moving at full speed. Make a mistake and Kyle is eaten by a horde of zombies or virals.

With all the good described so far and the sheer fun of being a wall climbing zombie killing machine it probably seems like the game deserves better than 7 out of 10 as a ranking. The reason for the lower ranking is that the story is limited and the ending is not as fulfilling as it should be. The writers attempted to create a powerful bond between Kyle and certain characters early in the story so that certain scenes would be more emotionally impactful later. It fails. The hoped for emotional link never occurs. The player just never gets really invested in the characters (say as in The Last of Us, with Ellie and Joel) to care or to have the plot twists leave an emotional impact. Certain characters, like Brecken, just seem incomplete.

The main villain is Rais. While diabolical and certainly evil incarnate, he won't be memorable as a video game character. His henchmen largely blur together. Rais as a villain, like the story, just falls a little short of being great. He falls into a wide category of good, but not great, video game villains.

The main premise of the story of itself, while decent, fails to be great, or even above average. Its a good story, with some predictable actions and behaviors by government and quasi government agencies. The story has the requisite plots twists and drives the action toward a final confrontation. The stories biggest failing though is the final confrontation. Without spoiling anything the final confrontation is simply lacking. From the players perspective and Kyle Crane's, the ending is satisfying, but the manner is not. From a story perspective lose ends are left. While the general ending is clear there are multiple significant lose ends are left untied for the player to fill in as they see fit.

Dying Light is a good game. Its above average and if MetaCritic allowed me to give half points it would get a 7.5. It is an enjoyable game with the depth and breadth expected of an open world game. The story is solid, the voice acting is ok, its not great but its not terrible. However its not a great game. Its not a great game because it falls short of what it attempts to be. The story, the villain, the hero, the attempt to grab the player and emotionally invest them in Jade, Rahim, Brecken, Kyle and make you feel for them, care about them and their plight, all falls a little short.

Dying Light will scare you. It will be intense. Your pulse will race. The zombie baby scene will creep you out, maybe for a couple days. The parkour free running is challenging and fun. Its worth the cost to own the game. Just don't expect it to be a GTA 5 or The Last of Us level game. Its a good second tier effort.

    Good Night/Good Luck

The story and characters are interesting and you get thrown into the world of dying light from the second you pick up the controller when GRE subcontractor Kyle Crane has to try and find a cure for the disease.

My one complaint with the game is that once you beat it, there is very little to do other than continue to bash zombies or upgrade weapons. I have not played any of the DLC's, but it looks like the developer is wanting to continue to add content.

One of the best games I have ever played.
    Graphics are top notch.
Gameplay is fun and varied (most varied ever in a zombie game)
Sounds are great and the use of the controller speaker is fantastic and spot-on.
    Parkour system has minor issues.
Otherwise, game is perfect. For completionists, it's a fun 50 hour game, without considering online...

I think Dying Light is the best coop-multiplayer game in PS4 so far. Finished the game with a friend playing from different country with slower internet. The connection is good enough to play.
I will definitely get the expansions / next sequels if there are any.

During the day you will explore the city in search of provisions and weapons. When the night falls, however, this troubled world undergoes a dramatic transformation that gives the gameplay a new dimension. You, as a hunter by day, become the hunted. Gameplay was great...a few hickups when attempting to jump on to a ledge only to miss it until you straighten you sights on it and try again. On a number of occasions i died on account of this.
Attempting to flee andor fight at night was kind of annoying, but in a good "scared Sh*tless" kind'a way. i tried fleeing afew times, tried fighting, then just decided to play mostly in daytime.
the Story is ok.... it keeps you going and the activities, even if sometime somewhat repetitive, still manage to keep you interested and on the edge of your seat.

Playing at night is really hard and requires a lot of skill, knowledge of the map and, of course, luck. I myself avoided playing at night, because it's nearly impossible. The devs did not lie when they said people would be frightened to play in the night.

The parkour works surprisingly well, it's fluid, it's intuitive and it's easy to jump from roof to roof, climb things and so on. Again, if you know the map well I guess you can do impressive things, win a lot of time and avoid the zombies better.

The graphics are beautifull, it's a true current gen game.

What I didn't like in this game was the fact that in the final missions it's too easy to avoid combat with the zombies, all you need to do is run, which is very frustrating and erases the difficulty of the game. Also, the final boss is defeated in a QTE sequence, which is very, very lame.

Also, I found the story very stupid and childish.

All in all it's a great game and a must have for every PS4 owner.

The game was a nice experience, but the originality is missing. The movement is smooth and the parkour is fun, but the game itself is mediocre. I would like to give a 7.0, but the night and day modes bring to the game a suitable freshness.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. At the time of release, I didn't really know much about the game or what incentive there would be to buy it. I ignored it, thinking it was an indie game (due to a huge lack of marketing in my area). Several months later, my next door neighbour bought the game and I had a playthrough. I was shocked by how brilliant the game was. i only played the first mission, but in that I already knew who the main characters were, as the game has an excellent way of telling the story. So I bought the game just before my birthday, and I've now played through the entire game. I will go through the story (there is one, and a pretty good one) the positives, and anything that could be improved on in the future.

You start the game with a cutscene that explains about the crysis happening in Haraan, a small Turkish town which has been put under quarentine by the UN (best zombie apocolypse handling ever) and you are playing as a field agent used to salvage documents for your higher collective. You are Kyle Crane, an American male voiced by Roger Craig Smith (voice of Ezio from AC, Batman in Arkham Origins and the new Sonic) as you are airdropped right into the middle of the slums. You fall onto a light trap and badly injure yourself before being rescued by the runners of the Tower (your home base) and are patched up and welcomed to surprisingly open arms. Partly because you are nigh-on immune to the virus.

You quickly meet the main group of characters: Rahim; a young and daring ambitious parkour specialist (who looks like the main character from Pyschonauts), Jade; a famous local kickboxer who is aesthetically stunning but also quite fiesty (cliched, kind of) and Brecken, the leader of the Tower (and also the guy from the trailer) who sounds and acts exctly like Jason Statham. Rahim gives you a quick parkour training where you soon impress (if you are good at the game) and are used to do shifts for the people of the tower.

The main story is: Keep the Tower up on their Antizin intake (which isn't an actual mechanic in the game, which I wish would be) and either scavange from airdrops / buy from Rais (bad idea) and help Dr. Zere in his research to find a cure. The deals with Rais go **** up so you are forced into a Civil war of sorts with his men. As with Zere, he asks you to fight through the old disheveled parts of town to Dr. Camden, his co-worker. Not gonna spoil too much more, so you can play the game yourself.

Pros include: There is a massive emphasis on realism and immersion. The game's amazing audio and vibe allow this with precision, especially early in the game where you are beating off zombies with nailed sticks. The zombies are graphically detailed and their AI is (mostly) well made. With the first person element, you feel like you are really Kyle Crane and you are really in a fight for survival. The protagonists are so well acted, I could see Crane's voice actor picking up awards for this year where voice acting has really not been strong. The open world is incredibly beautiful and feels more next-gen than 90% of next-gen games. The game is beautifully crafted and the art style is utterly superb, and when it turns to night, it holds this with its gritty dark tone that makes the dark something to be feared.

The gameplay is incredible. The dynamic parkour and the environment go hand in hand in a beautiful display which feels like heaven if you've just finished playing Cod. This really helps both at day and at night, in every situation. The combat feels like a massive improvement from Dead Island is gets even better when you move further down the skill tree. It gives the gain replayability when it is this fun to bash zombie's brains in. How ironic.

Now for the negatives. It is best said that the cliches could drive a nitpicker round the bend, especially with all of the comparisons to Far Cry. The antagonist is very flimsily portrayed, who rightly is just a Turkish Vaas knock-off. Turkey are 'good' on their knock-offs. Also, the AI can be laughable at times, mainly with Rais's men and grounded zombies, especially with the voice queues. Unfair to say, they weren't given that good a script. Said script which makes half of the characters in the game unlikable. The character models on most NPCs are the same and are similar to that of the Marines in Halo: CE. It doesn't help when most character have the same body language besides the ones that have had effort given to them. And finally, the online. It may be good in co-op, but Be the Zombie is pretty damned broken. Just stick to the main game.

I played this game almost fully on my own, so my experiences are from playing alone. My experience: the game is brilliant. This is possibly the best zombie game ever in terms of immersion and playability. I love this game, it is some of the most fun I've had in a single player game. One problem though: When you run out of missions, it gets boring quickly. Very quickly. I give this game a 9/10 on the fact that it plays so damn well.

Dying Light was alot better then it got given credit for. Dying Light managed to blow me away visually, every inch of this game looks amazing and detailed. I finished the campaign yesterday and I was a little dissappointed, it just didn't wow me, the game is well paced and plays really smooth. Some of the side missions are a little boring and repetitive though. Dying Lights parkour is whatDying Light was alot better then it got given credit for. Dying Lights parkour is what really separates it from other games, the parkour is hard at the start but the more you play, the better you get. Overall, Dying Light is a smooth and detailed game with a few downsides storywise, if you haven't picked Dying Light up yet, DO IT! Expand

Dying light on the ps4 is a very fun game. It's a amazing open world zombie action game. If you like zombies buy this game right now! The story and characters are cliched but you will not care one bit because you will be having to much fun. There have also been no bugs as I played. The graphics are amazing thanks to the ps4 and it works very well on the ps4.

when this game first came out i wasn't hyped about it at all, but my friend told me it was pretty cool and "scary" and it is but their's some flaws. First off if your a graphics freak the graphics are terrible in this game, and the lip syncing is pretty bad, and don't get me started on the story, i just skipped all the cut scenes that's how bad it was. But the gameplay is pretty fun!!!! from the parkour to the slicing and dicing, it's great, but the guns are a last resort and their isn't a lot of them. I haven't played the multiplayer but i think it's pretty much you play with four friends and do side missions i think some story missions as well and you can also play as the hunter which is a very fast zombie at night. It's an okay game im waiting for the upcoming dlc which gives you a cross bow and let's you ride a dune buggy. AWESOME!!! Expand

Im playing the pre order, this is actually like 10 times better than Dead Island series. The story is strong compared to Dead Island, the Parkour matches and sometimes is even better than Mirror Edge's. The Combat is actually awesome, incredible addictive. When you go alone to the city it makes you thrill , this game is actually good, nothing like people were saying.

Graphics on PS4 are amazing, this is one of the best looking game so far on PS4 catalog.

Physics and ambience are absolutely superb at this title. Ive played about 2 hours and i can say this is a good game, it could get to the point that it will be boring, but lets hope it does not happen

If they added the following expansion within the main game [which would take a load of time to develop] the outcome would have been better, it would feel like an actual long-hour-zombie story so for this reason i will give it a 6 out of 10 [that rating also includes the WORST BOSS BATTLE, QTE! WOOOH....Less creative ideas for weapon crafting, Dead island had better than this....And zombiesIf they added the following expansion within the main game [which would take a load of time to develop] the outcome would have been better, it would feel like an actual long-hour-zombie story so for this reason i will give it a 6 out of 10 [that rating also includes the WORST BOSS BATTLE, QTE! I played this game with a friend, we did the story in co-op. It's been along time since we have played such great game, it's was perfect. It's kind of a mix of many games, you can see allot of FarCry in it, but in a very good way. Story is good, graphic is good. And the gore is perfect! Chop off head, arms and legs, even split them in half, I LOVE IT!!

With some crazy fun online elements and a badass sense of actual achievement, Dying Light is the zombie game we've been working for. Just mute those terrible voices. [Issue#254, p.64]

It's not perfect, but Dying Light is last, brutal and most importantly, fun. [April 2015, p74]
