With its gorgeous hand drawn animated graphics, beautiful character designs, and fun-to-master combo system, Dusty Raging Fist is an exceedingly fun beat 'em up to play with friends or solo, and despite its small flaws it is an engaging and enjoyable experience any fan of the genre will love.

Dusty Raging Fist shows clearly its pros and cons. The game has a pretty decent character design and some good beat’em up sequences, but the narrative and the gameplay fall short. Plus, there are some irritating frame drop from time to time.

Dusty Raging Fist is a great looking side-scroller with some creative ideas. However, aesthetics can only take a title so far. Underneath it all is a finicky combat system and poorly finished platforming that quickly drags the game into infuriatingly bland territory.

On initial appearance Dusty Raging Fist looked like everything I wanted from a game, but that just goes to show you should never judge an anthropomorphic 2D side scrolling beat ’em up platformer by its gorgeous anime graphics. Unresponsive combat, atrocious platforming and game breaking bugs, crashes and frame rate issues ensures that Dusty and his cohort will soon be gathering dust on player’s shelves.

The game places your survival in your hands (last boss is hard af) with a nice balance of button mashing and strategy. You can roll to escape anything when on the ground, but you'll need to watch for "tells" on multiple enemies to know when they're about to attack (and attacks come out fast).

Lots of enemy variety and unique bosses (none of the stuff Sega does where the boss from one level shows up as a regular enemy the next level). There's also a bit of exploration involved as there are platforming sections and hidden upgrades throughout each level.

As the game is also 3-player co-op, I know my brother and I would've sunk weeks into this when we were younger, and it's a nice throwback to those days. If you're the type of player that will keep going until you've beaten the hardest mode or if you're just looking for a solid co-op beat 'em up with a good amount of move depth, I'd recommend it.

PS. Spend your experience points on your character until max level (which is 6) before anything else. Each level unlocks new moves and combos that will add additional layers to the combat. Don't waste exp on anything else until your character is maxed out.

But DRF is indie game and pretty good as a beat'em up genre. It'll take 4 ~ 5 hours to clear the game. Full Review »
