An ambitious title aiming to introduce gamers to the world of game development with a low barrier of entry. Dreams is a place to create music, sculptures, games, short films you name it, someone has attempted it, but one of the most impressive aspectsThe brilliant team at Media Molecule behind such titles as the Little Big Planet series and Tearaway have followed up with Dreams for PS4. An ambitious title aiming to introduce gamers to the world of game development with a low barrier of entry. Dreams is a place to create music, sculptures, games, short films you name it, someone has attempted it, but one of the most impressive aspects of dreams is the ability to jump in at any time and play other ‘dreamers’ creations. And to be honest, its one of my favourite experiences on PS4…

    I have been playing dreams for around 200 hours now, through both the Beta and Early access release, and I think it’s fair to say that I have been blown away by its technical capabilities. Dreams is a full game creation toolkit, where users can create everything from small sculpture showcases to full musical scores, and share whatever they make with users worldwide. Booting up the game for the first time can prove a bit overwhelming for first time users, but this is quickly overcome by helpful beginner tutorials and a very intuitive user interface.

    A good starting point is MM’s own campaign, ‘Art’s Dream’ which can be found currently featured in the play dreams tab and has been made entirely within the Dreams creation engine. Art’s Dream plays as a 2-3-hour interactive film that follows Art, a depressed musician who doubts his musical prowess, and rekindles his love for playing Jazz through childhood memories. The story is deep, animations are near floorless and its incredibly impressive how many different game modes MM managed to cram in to a coherent and well written narrative.

    Whilst it helps to have a general understanding of the foundations of game design, anyone looking to play dreams can jump in, and with the help of MM’s tutorials, and can easily understand the basics of how to create content. Anything more than that however, is going to take time and dedication to grasp, as is the same with the learning curve for any other piece of software.

    The ‘Dreams Surfing’ mode in the game has also proven to be quite a fun dive, with it acting as a random button for every dream that has been uploaded to the ‘Dreamiverse’. You never quite know what you’re going to get yourself into. I have seen some very impressive user created content so far in Dreams, but most experiences so far are short format content, or games that exhaust themselves within the first 5 minutes. This could be because the game has only been out for a short while, but I hope users create more fleshed out experiences in time.

    Over the course of the Early Access release, I dabbled in creating a dream, and attempted to recreate a scene from the game ‘Bioshock’ from scratch. I was impressed in how easily I was able to pick up the toolsets and create something that utilised lighting, sound, texture and movement to make a coherent scene. As someone with no prior development experience it was reassuring to know that with a bit of practice you can make engaging dreams. Its important to note that if you don’t fancy yourself as a creator, you can still create dreams using assets that other users have made, and MM actively encourage this through their tutorials.

    I know it sounds cliché at this point but one of the most interesting aspects of Dreams is the community that has been built around the game. It has its own reddit, discord server, a dedicated website to view users’ creations on indreams.me, and there is a clear push towards collaborating with other users. MM have a 10-year plan for Dreams, and have a roadmap to add PSVR support, online multiplayer and sculpture export for 3D printing among other things down the line. The ability to share and create whatever you want to is truly awe inspiring.

    Overall, I feel Dreams both delivers and exceeds the lofty expectations that MM set out to achieve, and you’re probably better off trying it out for yourself than reading this review to understand if its worth your time investment. The game allows for full creative expression, and really highlights the talents of every day people around the world. I can’t wait to see more     … Expand

    Very fun game, the "example" dream "arts dream" is 2-4 hours of playtime, and is designed to be an example of the power of the system not a standalone game. Anybody complaining that it's too short doesn't really understand what this game "Dreams" is about. Even if you aren't creative there are 100's of games to play not just the one example one. A number that is constantly growing. Yes, some aren't that exciting, but there are some really amazing examples of creativity and I can only imagine it will grow as the community grows and understands the tools more.… Expand

    Dreams gives you the opportunity to make your dreams come true. Seeing the impact of this game is indicative of its quality and is a title for somebody who loves community supported games like Forge in Halo, Mario Maker and Media Molecules own LittleBigPlanet.

The array of tools available here is incredible and you can create anything you can imagine if you put your mind to it.     Dreams’ story mode is called Art’s Dream, which tells the tale of double bass player Art, who had left his band due to personal issues, now fighting his demons in, you guessed it, a dream. While the story is much more mature than any other game they’ve made, its certainly not dark, with the implementation of protagonists being childhood toys, musical theatre, and multiple humorous parts here and there. The well thought out level design and the ever-changing genres of Art’s Dream makes the 2-3 hour story fly by. Its not short to a fault, as its only a demo to what Dreams is capable of, encouraging you to create your own story mode.

    The biggest part about what makes Dreams so revolutionary is its creation system. The tools you are provided surpasses any other creation games potential by a large margin. Thanks to this, you are capable of creating practically anything you can think of, as long as you know how to do it. Want to make a first person shooter? Cool. Want to create a musical performance? No problem. Want to create something absolutely bizarre? Go ahead! It is true that this game can be overwhelming in the amount of tools and potential at your fingertips. I have often been blinded by my own ambition to only lead myself into staring at an empty canvas for 5 minutes straight, not knowing where to start. However, the reason for this was because I was too ambitious with my projects. Once I slowly built my ambitions up from something smaller, I felt unstoppable. While this likely won’t happen for everyone, this is something to keep in mind. Thankfully, Media Molecules carefully created tutorials helps newcomers ease into the creation suite, as their pace remains constantly steady, and are a joy to go through. If you need help from friends, or even strangers, you can add them as collaborators to help you out in building your Dreams. This means that it is possible to create your own little game studio in Dreams, or you can borrow the assets created by other dreamers to use in your own, which gives off a spectacular feel of community within Dreams.

    If you feel too overwhelmed by creating or if you simply don’t wish to do that, don’t worry, as there is dream surfing, which is essentially the YouTube of video games. You can explore the dreams of others with a single press of a button, whether that be visual spectacles, musical pieces, gaming demos, or even full gaming experiences. Don’t know what to try out first? Try the auto-surfing feature, as it will randomly select dreams for you to try out, and keeps selecting them for you until you quit out of it. The user interface is very slick and user-friendly, allowing you to comment on other peoples creations, whether that be a discussion, feedback, bug reports, or reviews, you can view what other assets people used to make their masterpiece, and you can even view the previous versions of the creation if that interests you. Dream-surfing is an experience that you truly have to try for yourself in order to understand.

    All-in-all, Dreams revolutionizes the “Play, Create, Share” concept by expanding it to a degree no game has ever went. Thanks to easy-to-grasp tutorials, a MASSIVE creation suite, a genuinely interesting story mode, and lots of content to see created by the community, Media Molecule has essentially given us a game engine to let us flex our creativity to make experiences of our own. Dreams is a game that could keep you hooked for hours at a time, like a social media, and is an experience that you should not miss.    … Expand

    The wait was long, but Media Molecule did not disappoint us. Dreams is my favorite game right now. I love creating scenarios and characters, and I don't need to be a programmer to do that! Thank you, MM!

The community is awesome and very helpful to everyone. Dreams is not just an engine its way more then that. Its a full package where youc can play tons of differnt games that are already been made by the community.

And if you are not good in create something you can just search for assets that has been made by the community and Mm itself to pick and to use.

    In Dreams Shaping you have the possibility to create whatever your mind wants to make. It’s much easier sculpting and doing logic in dreams compared to Unreal Engine 4 or Unity. Dreams removes the scary coding part and simplifies it with special blocks. There are a lot of tutorials in the game that allow you to learn what each thing does and how to use it. It helps a lot with learning and you will be able to make something special at the end of it. The tutorials aren’t borring. They encourage you to do stuff in your own way. Choose your own colours. Make your own strange shapes. Anything is possible in dreams.
    Dreams Surfing is selfexplanitory. You can surf the creations others have made. Play Animations, Games, Showcases and so much more! It’s a blast. You will also find a game called “Arts Dream”. It’s an epic story game made by the creators of Dreams (Media Molecule). They used all the same tools we have access to in Dreams Shaping. I’ll won’t spoil anything. Play the game for yourself to find out what it’s about.

    I have been following Media Molecule since 2007 when they made LBP and I was astounded by the ambition of that game back then. Come 2013 I saw their tech demo and I was worried about what they were about to embark on. They were essentially proposing LBP in 3D with a full sculpting tool and rigging/animation suite. Fast forward 7 years and it has finally released and I gotta tell you. ThisI have been following Media Molecule since 2007 when they made LBP and I was astounded by the ambition of that game back then. Come 2013 I saw their tech demo and I was worried about what they were about to embark on. They were essentially proposing LBP in 3D with a full sculpting tool and rigging/animation suite. Fast forward 7 years and it has finally released and I gotta tell you. This without a doubt lives up to the hype many times over. Just seeing where the community was back in the beta, to where they are now. I simply cannot imagine what they will accomplish in just 6 months more or 12 months more. This is the quintessential definition of "it gets better over time". Not only because the creators are getting better but also because Media Molecule will keep updating the game. Next up is VR which will revolutionize VR game creation, and after that there is Online Multiplayer which, like LBP, will give everyone the tools necessary to make their Star Trek, Online VR dreams come true (no pun intended). With the PS5 coming out at the end of this year I can only hope that they will take proper advantage of its capabilities in an update and maybe even bundle the game in with as many PS5 consoles as possible.… Expand

    You can create anything, play anything, imagine anything. This is a tool disguised as a game. Simple enough to use as so people without art/programming experience can create their own games, and as an aspiring game developer this is all I could have asked for.

    To the uncreative haters who whine about being forced to make games, you don't have to create anything if you don't want to. There are infinite games made by creative and amazing players and also the devs themselves so stop drooling, just go play whatever garbage (cod, fortnite) you think is good.

It was a simple demo of a level being designed and various tools being strung in like musical synthesisers, etc. In my head, I saw a glimmer of the impossible, then I sat back and crossed my fingers. What Dreams has achieved is something almost unthinkable. It is an entire creation suite of video game development. Think Unity, Unreal, engines that modern games are made on. It uses the power of the DS4 and the PS4 Pro to create a very intuitive creative experience. I have not, by any stretch, explored it completely. However, I am definitely a believer who is really happy for media molecule and am still gasping at what they have created here. Someone pinch me.     If you like to create, art, music, games, whatever your vision is, you can do it in Dreams. Its gonna take time to master if you wanna do it from scratch but there are a ton of tutorials to guide you thru the way. Tutorials that you can watch in-game while creating. Very user friendly.

    And if you like to play a bunch of different games, if you are an indie game lover, this is paradise for you.

    You have "Art´s Dream", a story game Media Molecule created in the game to show whats possible. And its fantastic, it could sell for 20-30 dollar by itself. And this little gem of a game will cost you 40 dollar, its a steal.

    Search for cow and a bunch of cow games will appear. Search for cat and even more fun experiences will be avaliable for you.

    Simply the best game for creative minds. Creating in Dreams is fun, you don't have to do something good, just the act of "doing" will satisfy you. And for those who don't like to create things, the campaign, Dream of Art, is excellent, one of the best PS4 games on its own.

    Simply incredible, I'm not the most creative person but have been able to put together simple designs for characters in a game I want to make and used other peoples designs for things I don't care about. I've also been playing a lot of the games people have made and some are brilliant. Can't wait to see what people come up with next! The value for money is insane, don't miss this one!¬

    Since day one of early access, I have spent more than 800 hours in Dreams. I've been a professional artist for 16 years or so, and today I do most of my work in Dreams. Personal art, and client work. I would never, in a million years, have guessed that a console title would make such a big impact on my art and career.     This a technical marvel. What Media Molecule has given us as Gamers is Freedom. Freedom to let our creative side let loose in Game Development, Music, Animation and Art. Everyone likes at least one of those categories and they have given us, the people, the tools to have at it and go for it. The "campaign" of 'Art's Dream' is jaw-droppingly gorgeous and is a feast for the eyes abd ears.

    That's the first power of Dreams, It touches you, It have it's own soul. And then, the second power shows itself: you are inside an incredible, never seen before, amount of tools, to do anything, at one place. I've played with many tools to do games as a hobby, but I've been always missing something caus usually you have to use at least 3 or more softwares to do something that's worth a play, to 3d modeling/art, music and the game itself... At least. Dreams turn that table down, and put you in a space where you can sculpt, make music, and construct your scene/game/experience/monstruosity/crazy idea/remake/etc. Dreams is something else.
    Now somethig that may be the beest thing in Dreams and it's third massive power: Community! I never, in my lifetime on the internet have seen a place so full of people that are incredible supportive, friendly, helpful and talented. In Dreams you can eith one click or two share your creations to the world to see, remix, review, explore and play. People have made unbelievable things on it. It's like Rick and morty's intergalactic TV, or as the creators called it, a youtube for anything. I've been there since early acess and I've never seen hate. The only thing, spread around creations with so much passion and suport, is love. That's the thing about Dreams, you see something you like, you share your thoughts and make someone happy. That's how it works, simple as that. And then the best feeling in this experience, see your thing beeing used by others. That's the love shared without words, is when you realise you're beying useful to someone else and have the sense of being part of something amazing. 1.Don't be afraid, creativity can spark at anyone, and Dreams will hold your hand and let you make something you want.
    2.The fun is on the process and not in the end. You'll have fun by sculpting, by making music, by doing anything.
    3.There is no need to be afraid of showig the stuff you made to the dreamers, they are people like you and me and I can tell you by my experience on early acess that they only have love to give.

    Media Molecule have created something remarkable, an experience that need to be felt. Years on the making being rewarded with a beautifully crafted game. Don't wait to jump in, the community is waiting for you.

    I’m struggling to think of a game in recent memory that has blown me away in the same way that Dreams has. As someone who is not very artistic, comparing my creation (an Oak Tree), to one of my more complex creations (a fully working Etch-a-Sketch), I’ve definitely come to appreciate that Dreams is a game that (like most), you get better at in time.     Been using dreams everyday since the Beta. The creation tools are like no other. You can build something beautiful in no time at all. Media Molecules campaign “Arts Dream” is an amazing gaming experience. It’s completely made inside dreams with the Same tools us users have at our disposal.
    It’s pretty much the only game I’ve played in the last 13 months.

    This is the "game" I have been waiting my whole life for. If you have even a smidge of creativity in you then this is for you. You have to be ready to put in the time learning. This is a new skill.

    Dreams’ creative mode might not integrate with PSVR as naturally as hoped, but its cemented position as a hub of invention makes it an easy recommendation. Paired with the platform’s inherent comfort issues, its sprawling, untamed ecosystem can prove to be a minefield to navigate, but for every unwelcome rollercoaster ride (literally and figuratively), there’s another wish waiting to be fulfilled or something genuinely original to discover. The only way to truly judge Dreams is by the strength of its creations and those already speak for themselves; if you want to embrace VR’s experimental side, you shouldn’t miss it.
