This is a great game and it’s apparent that the critic score is inaccurate with much more favorable user feedback. It is worth the money if you have spend a good amount of time playing any other dragon ball game. It’s not perfect but the fact that you can feel immersed in the actual anime is what makes this game special

Saludos!!

It's a hybrid of RPG, action-adventure and fighting game, zorkeon, not a "fake RPG". Though this is a great game, it does have problems, like being repetitive because of the damn robots you fight pre-Raditz. Overall, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is a great game with surprisingly great graphics, but it's also a bit on the grindy side because of the god **** damn robots. Anyway, I recommend this game to anyone who is fine with grinding. Expand

    Pros:
    - A faithful adaptation of DBZ anime/manga.
    - nostalgic Easter Eggs from the DB series.
    - easy to master RPG elements.

    Cons:
    - The semi-open world map is beautiful but does not invite exploration.

Expand

    First of all I
DBZ Kakarot is a worthy installment for all fans of the franchise. To me this game is a 8.5. As usual I go with my gut feeling whether to go up and down. This time I would say it is a worthy 9 for fans and a decent 8 for casual visitors to the series. I ve been playing DBZ Kakarot on my PS4 Pro with SSD and will give you some heads-up with my personal game experience.

First of all I have to admit that the DragonBall franchise has been a large part of my childhood, still I did not play any of the predecessors because I m not that much of a button-masher-fighting-game-dude. This time I tried my luck because the emphasize seemed to be more on the world and a bit less on the combat.

The presentation of the game is very good. The visual experience, the effects, the sound and also the voice acting is really really good. You can choose between english and japanese audio which is a worthy addition for fans and might be a let down for people not able to speak or understand english at least. The loading times from saves, starting the game or warping around the semi open world was surprisingly good. It took mere seconds before the loading was done. During my game experience I did not encounter larger frame drops although there seemed to be very minor texture popups during cut-scenes, which is a bit surprising considering I used a pretty decent SSD. I still want to add that this happened scarcely and did not interfere largely with the game experience. The only bug I encountered was that sometimes I was not able to talk to people if fights happened next to them. So I had to save and reload in place to fix it. Nothing too bad overall.

Gameplay toggles between traversing the semi open world, doing story tasks and sidequests, grabbing orbs to level up or gather new skills during training ground missions. The game loop feels a little bit dull and misses a great opportunity to give this game a real open world touch although it is not a complete let down. For me being not a fighting expert the mechanics are okay. You control your character with a handful of skill buttons and can toggle to party members skills with shoulder buttons. Mix up skills are also available making the fighting experience interesting. You dont have to mash combos as you would in full blown fighting games. More or less you mash between dashes, strikes and punches, build up your ki and fire designated skills at the enemy. Whether that is enough for you might be very subjective. It feels mashing heavy at times but for me still sufficiently complex. Some boss fights might be a little bit too hard for casual players. To me it felt largely okay.

Fights go in different alterations such as 1v1, 1v2, 1vX or XvY, so there is also some variety here and in free roam mode you can also customize your party you want to go out with. The game feels a little drawn out at times quite as you would expect it knowing the old series. Still I have to say it was a worthy experience because you can enjoy the stages of DBZ in a more direct and somewhat condensed feeling without loosing too much of its original depth. Everything you loved (and probably hated) is in here for you to re-discover.

One of the biggest let downs for me (as it was back then) is that the game is pretty cut in terms of gore and violence. They tried to manage it well with setting decent scene cuts but for hardcore fans this might be a re-ocurring nightmare of old times where you had to go with imported versions to see the actual movie experience. I wished they had an option for this or an uncut version to buy because it made me really sad to live through the disappointment again. Decide for yourself whether this is a no-go or not but it is to me also a deciding factor to why I choose the 8 on my side.

I would recommend this game for franchise fans and people who enjoy semi casual fighting combined with semi open world story elements. Maybe grab it at some discount but I feel that it is a game that has a decent production value. It would ve been kinda cool if they took an even more RPG-ish approach to leveling or evolving your character because it feels overly simplistic at times. Knowing the franchise the next appearance might be already in the works and who knows what will come next.

The game's fighting system can be a bit clunky at times, but I do enjoy using different characters when the story calls for it. I'm gonna sink more hours into it to see how it turns out, but I am having some fun with it.

My main complaint with this game is that it feels a little bit unpolished on certain aspect. I mean, we have to be realistic and look at the fact that the Japanese cast isn’t getting any younger and that it would be very unlikely to have a Dragon Ball game of this type again. I would have wait another year or two without complaining for this game to be the definitive fully polished and detailed Dragon Ball experience.

If your a Dragon Ball fan you will greatly enjoy the game. If your not you might want to wait for a sale. As I played on a 2nd gen ps4 I experienced minor hiccups while the game loaded the world after each "episode" for about 3-5 seconds the game would freeze up.Hopefully the downright horrid camera can be fixed in an update.

Secondly, the side quests are limited with regards to their availability. Each open at a particular “episode” in the story and closes by the ending of either that or a few subsequent ones (usually within 1-3 eps). This makes it nigh impossible to return to and obtain the the rewards therein (some of them truly help in powering up and exploration too!). However, this adds to the replay value of the story and each side quest time window is accessible through the story menu. The side quests are also quite repetitive and usually involve a Kamehameha to the face but are nevertheless a treat for fans of the series. The fighting mechanic is also limited in the number and types of combos allowed yet explosive enough to include various types of attacks (KI, vanishing, physical, homing, etc). The story is definitely one to cherish and relive with multiple playable characters, part formations and exploration that gives a taste of being a Z warrior. Here’s to hoping that cyber connect improves some features with an update and releases an improved sequel/DLC involving the “super” saga. Expand

What lets it down is the side content, with the exception of a handful of quests. There is a lazy over-reliance on fetch quests to fill out the world and it can become painfully boring to have to go through these, which you have to if you want to collect D tokens (the currency for learning new moves).
As a rule for developers, if you wouldn't want to do it yourself why make the players do it?.

    Jugabilidad

The art and animation are also great. The combat is fairly fun, but it doesn't have much depth and can get a bit repetitive. That's where it pretty much excels at. Everything else is pretty sub par. The combat is lacklustre, I can spam blasts with all fighters to win most battles (similar to Xenoverse). The AI are pretty dumb as they strafe into your blasts. There's only one combo per character where you just pretty much tap the punch button with no variation. The Budokai Tenkaichi games at least had some combo variations and even some throw moves.

The divided open world is large but the things to do is really basic. The fishing mini game is rubbish and hover car racing? Cmon! Collecting the Dragon Balls is just not rewarding (No I don't want to fight the Ginyu Squad again!!).

The RPG elements is weak. No gear to equip and it's just unlocking skills when you hit a certain level and you fight ghost figures of yourself to unlock new moves.

Overall, if you are new to DBZ you will enjoy the epic story. I really thought they would get the fighting right since they've release a million versions of fighting games since the 90s.

Calling this game an RPG is a joke. It's an action adventure game with very little RPG elements.

    NEGATIVO

    - Misiones secundarias: completamente banales.

    - World build (áreas semi abertas)
    - Cutscenes (CyberConnect2 nunca falha nesse quesito)

    Contras
    - Sistema Rpg bem raso

Great visuals, looks and feels as the tv series. Combat is simple but fun. Gets a bit repetitive specially the secundary missions which are just fetch quests without any purpose.

I would recommend this game to fans of the anime but if you aren't a fan then id wait for a sale to purchase it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As it stands right now, the game feels as if it needed a lot more polishing and technical work, and just simply more time. Constant bugs, some that even make me reboot the game to continue plague the game right now, and it has some of the worst voice acting I've ever heard in a dragonball Z game. All the main voice actors do a great job, but then the delivery is off in a lot of scenes, or they just use the same recorded "Okay!" about 500 times. Voice lines repeat, play out of order, and there are some instances of brief scenes that had 0 audio.

Some of the other voice actors (Android 17 especially) were just awful. Sounded like they were just reading a book out loud, instead of actually playing a character.

Most of the issues I have with the game can be fixed though. The game itself is pretty fun, if not a little grindy (But a hell of a lot less grindy than most RPGs). I'd definitely recommend people wait to buy, after a few more patches maybe things will be improved.

Do not let the ultra fanboys lie to you, This game is average at best, it is not a 10. The gameplay is boring, the controls kinda suck, the fighting is ok, the generic enemies are very generic and show up all over, I avoided them at all costs, and the sidequests are just pretty boring.

Don't get me wrong is not a horrible game in any way, it is a decent attempt at a semi open-world DBZ

I love the game, fighting and the story, but as for RPG genre the side quests and character progression/grinding was just useless if completing the main story gives you 100x the reward of completing a side quest which were most of the time pick up or kill something. Over all it's a great game and graphics, but it is very glitchy. Sometimes during special attacks, even at point blank range with your opponent dead center of your target circle, no damage to the guy you're fighting. if for some reason someone didn't watch dragon ball Z this is a great way to experience it. You re playing the main story and seeing the events that occur while you control the characters.
the music is nothing more of a nostalgic tone . I believe its the first RPG dragon ball since the original Game boy Legacy of Goku games. The worlds look massive and huge , and your interaction with it

battles are fast pacing and extremely good, the cutscenes gorgeous.
Also worth mentioning that the way they combined the 2 Xenoverses into this with the secret boss is amazing

    HOWEVER
this game cut some important scenes such as the final flash, rage form trunks and others.
The game does not have the replay ability value (for me), some rpg elements such as food and Z board shouldn't even be there since they re useless :')

DBZ: Kakarot does a great job telling us the main story from the anime, however, that is all it really does. Recomedado. Expand

Another thing is, if you’re expecting super mechanical fights, EXTENDED combos, and complex boss fights... well I’m going to have to tell you to leave those expectations at the door. The combos are repetitive, fights are repetitive, the only part you’re hoping to see is the mid-fight cutscenes after doing a move. Either way, apart from all that the game is beautiful. It is the story of Dragon Ball Z all the way. Nice little interactions with fan favorite characters, amazing places to visit in such an open world. But that’s all the game has to offer in all honesty. There is going to be dlc for the game in later dates but seeing the pattern of the base game, it will be a hard pass for me. If you can live with everything I listed, and enjoy the manga based story. Then you’ll have a great time playing this game, guaranteed. Expand

Dragon Ball Z Kakarot is what I expected from a modern anime game. It lets you play through the anime's story giving you some side missions and extra content which usually is ultimately pointless. The game is unbelievably easy, especially with healing items. They feel needed for context but they halt the gameplay. I only felt like it was a worthy purchase was to complete all of the achievements in the game. As fan it's a fun game, but as gamer I think you should buy this one on sale. Expand

Despite the numerous flaws, Kararot still offers a wonderful retelling of the main story, above-average graphics, and a great soundtrack, so it’s worth picking up for established and new fans of the series alike.

Even though DBZ: Kakarot retells the same story the franchise has been telling for decades, it manages to do so in creative new ways for hardcore anime fans.

A very few games can compare to Kakarot in terms of sheer love towards the original series and storytelling qualities. Not without its set of flaws that leave only regret not being even greater, Kakarot still manages to be a great game for fans. No, scratch that. It manages to be an amazing game! May they not stop here, and deliver more and more of love-letters like this. If it goes in the right direction, the next one could definitely be legendary.
