    This is a pretty flat entry to the game. It does do SOME things better than any other Dishonored game and overall i don't regret buying the game. At the same time I never beat it so...yeah I dont know quite how to feel about it.

    Story/Characters - This is by far the weakest part of the game. Flat character development and a bit of a lobotomization of the main characters.     Gameplay - This is a mixed bag. I like the idea and experimentation angle the team went with. I definitely got a "guinea pig" vibe with this entry. It almost feels like a Thief game in a few levels (3rd one in particular), with multiple ways to progress, powers that revolve around planning and strategy rather than being a "ghostly shadow god among the dumb mortals" like a fully powered Corvo. Overall it changes the approach to situations. Also I noticed significantly less health items and equipment, with more exploration needed to find them. This amplifies the risk reward idea. However the powers are very underwhelming. I get they fit a new playstyle the dev team was trying to push onto the player, but that restricts freedom, and taking that away when it was in EVERY other installment makes it feel restricted and lackluster at times. Also, the "blink" ability is super clunky compared to the fluid acrobatics of Daud and Corvo. On the side note the backstab/choke mechanic feels like it took a BIIIIIIIG step backwards. Get ready to have to stand and stare at the back of a lot of heads while the game decides if you within the 4cm area directly behind the NPCs to justify a backstab/choke. Cant tell you how many times I had to load my game because I poked a guard in the butt rather than jam my sword through the back of his neck. Really frustrating

    So in conclusion I liked this game, but hated some parts leaving me with a mixed feeling. I will probably never beat this game because I really dont care what happens. More than likely I will just replay a few levels down the road the obviously had the most love and time put into them and forget the rest to the depths ooooofffff theeeee voooiiiid oooOOooOOooOOooOO hahahaha

    Truth is I will buy any installment of Dishonored unless it goes full Konami. I love that the dev team is trying new things and will always support them in that endeavor    … Expand

    Same great gameplay experience as other immersive sims and old dishonored games. Maybe i missed more superpowers and runes, maybe billie is not so interesting character but whatever, even if dishonored never had a great story, it's one of the most addicted single campaign games. I love atmosphere, details and design. Already spend 10 hours and still in chapter 3 because of "play your way"Same great gameplay experience as other immersive sims and old dishonored games.     With the series in full swing after two solid games, the decision to expand this DLC into a stand alone release seemed like a decent idea.....but its just not worth your time or the extra price.     Everything about D:DOTO seems hugely lackluster compared to the two main titles. The writing is weak, the game play is far less nuanced and choices you got used to in Dishonored 2 have been removed.

    Now maybe you arent a big Dishonored fan and wont miss the game play from Dishonored 2 because you didnt play it......well, i would definitely tell you to avoid D:DOTO because you will be lost. You are expected to know a lot of background info you could only have gotten from playing Dishonored 1 & 2.

    Characters that have been subtly fleshed out over the coarse of the franchise suddenly act in ways that seem odd.....im looking at you Mr. Outsider....

    The main character, who could have been an interesting protagonist, just wasnt.

    Overall, its just a far inferior version of Dishonored. It would have been better off being made into a smaller, more focused, less expensive DLC.

    Save your money and either wait for a super sale, or until the inevitable "Game of the Year" edition Dishonored 2, which includes D:DOTO.    … Expand

    Different, very bleak tone to the other Dishonored games. Some fantastic immersive sim moments like the creepy taxidermist in the first level and the entirety of the bank heist level. I like the chaos system in the other games but it works well here to remove it.

The game was an enjoyable playthrough, but I agree with your points on story.     This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. DOTO is a step backwards from the impressive writing that the Dishonored franchise is known for. The story is incoherent put against its predecessors and the characters are flat. For 30 bucks you can complete this extension within six or so hours. A few scenes within the game were disturbing in its implications, such as The Outsider pinning Billie Lurk and forcing supernatural powers on them as Billie tries to fight them off.

    The levels were recycled from Dishonored 2 and felt uncreative. DOTO’s small saving grace is Billie’s powers are interesting, but not enough to call this game enjoyable. Other than that, Billie is this character with no real motivation, is directed by Daud (who is scarce within the game and dies off screen, out of the blue) on what is to be done, and limps through a story that doesn’t quite make sense. I would recommend watching playthroughs and if you find it interesting, then spend. This is not Arkane’s best and, to be honest, continuing to extend the DH franchise feels like a stretch. DH did a great job creating a self-contained and fantastic story. DH2 hit a few marks in that area, but it felt like an unneeded continuation. The ribbons and bows were already neatly tied in DH regarding story and its universe. This installment, DOTO, is a painful stretch and we see characters and the universe suffer because of it through the writing.    … Expand

    Playing aggressively I beat this expansion in about 4 hours, so needless to say it’s pretty lengthy for what it is as I’m sure a pure stealth play through would double the size…
    Billie brings her own set of skills to the table..
    you’re still able to dash through the air like corvo, but she’s able to get her Eliza Thornberry on and talk to rats to get clues on her task at hand, steal the identity of npcs to sneak pass guards, and freeze time to play as an orb of energy like in beyond two souls where you can go through cracks to spawn a point for you to teleport to
    also mark bone charms around to buff your characters stats
    you have a sword and bolts at your disposal for combat..
    And thankfully this time there are no skill trees...
    and I say thankfully because every ability is unlocked through story progression and this means that the game forces you to use abilities for level progression like I’ve been suggesting the game does from the start…
    This means even the most aggressive person like me isn’t just going in there parrying and dodging bullets..
    I had to use my abilities to problem solve…
    the world is crawling with targets of course and even contracts…
    but unfortunately the world here in death of the outsider just isn’t interesting to explore..
    It’s probably the laziest design I’ve seen in a dishonored game…
    this is where this otherwise solid expansion is hurt the most...
    absolutely 0 memorable moments or levels…
    the end of the outsider deserved a much better send off than what he’s been given here…
    I still had a decent amount of fun disarming traps and outsmarting enemies..
    especially once I unlocked the ability to blast enemies in the air with my sword
    and of course I love the fact the game goes the rout I’ve always wanted with designing levels around abilities… and as a result abilities being able to be used frequently without consumables attached
    but these levels are just a bore making death of the outsider a very forgettable experience…
    if you’re a dishonored fan of course pick it up to see what potentially is the end to this series…
    but as a for stealth fans in general.. This if a very skippable standalone…
    I give Dishonored Death of the Outsider

    Game ruined by constantly moving interface, which make you dizzy on the first seconds. I liked reading all the notes in Dishonored 2 as it gives more to the story and necessary if you want to find some secrets. Here, I can't read those when text is constantly moving on the screen.

    It's like a mini-Dishonored 2, only without runes to upgrade or acquire new powers, or even a heart to locate the bonecharms. It also features many technical bugs such as clipping and guards that can mysteriously spot you through solid objects - with autosaves upon detection apparently. Either this game just hates me, or this is simply not a good game in its current form.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Game, I dub thee, “the game that had some cool ideas and a lot of potential and absolutely wasted all of it”.

    I’m going to start with the bad, just to get it out of the way.

    -Billie was given very little motivation of her own, taking her cues from Daud instead and making the game about him when it should’ve been focused on her.
    -People have already done a much better job of explaining why Billie and Daud’s motivations make no sense than I could, but anyway, their motivations make no sense.
    -The level recycling was a bit exhausting.
    -The scene where the Outsider shows up and takes Billie’s arm and eye is… very violent. And I don’t necessarily mean that in the way you might be thinking, but I think it’s important to note that the Outsider, who has never shown any inclination to touch anyone before, suddenly manhandles Billie and essentially forces her powers on her. There are some uncomfortable implications that go along with that, especially when you consider that he gave the Dishonored 2 main characters a choice, but not Billie.
    -The lack of the chaos system. The game doesn't have stakes anymore.
    -“Daud never stopped killing.” This makes absolutely no sense to me, because the fact that he canonically let Billie go would mean that he would’ve had to be low chaos in Knife of Dunwall. But according to Thomas (I’m assuming that was Thomas), he’s still the same assassin? Sure, game. Sure.
    -Missing pieces of lore. Sure, killing the Outsider/turning him human renders him unable to give magic to people, but the game doesn’t explain what happens to those he’s already marked (of which I’m pretty sure the only one who’s left alive is Emily).

    Now, here are the things that I thought were interesting, or had potential, but didn’t end up going anywhere or were underused.

    -Billie’s connection to the change in time at Stilton’s manor. Obviously this is important, as it’s the reason for her nightmares and the reason why she can see all the hollows, but for some reason the game never does anything with it. Billie never expresses any interest in finding out why she has the dreams, and she never gets to find out that the reason she loses her eye and arm is because Emily went back in time and saved Aramis Stilton. I personally think that the main plot of the game should’ve been about her figuring this out.
    -The juxtaposition of Billie and the Outsider. Again, the game had some interesting moments where it’s pointed out that the Outsider and Billie have gone through similar experiences - of not having a choice, and of undergoing childhood trauma. It could’ve been a fascinating parallel throughout the game, except that it’s ruined almost immediately by - you guessed it - the Outsider not giving Billie a choice in accepting her powers.
    -The relationship between Billie and Daud. There was no tension between them at all. I feel like there should’ve been some initial wariness and even some animosity between them at first - after all, it’s been fifteen years, and the last time they saw one another Billie had betrayed him. They shouldn’t have just been like, “Yeah, it’s all good, let’s just do our thing.” I expected more there.
    -The Eyeless. On the surface, just another nut-job cult, but more insidious than they appeared. But again, Arkane could’ve done a lot more with them.
    -There was the whole thing about Delilah’s witches joining the Eyeless after Delilah was overthrown, and it was clear that the witches had contempt for their fellow cult members. To them, the Eyeless were just a bunch of wanna-bes. Arkane could’ve taken this plot and run with it, could’ve turned it into an eventual civil war within the cult, could’ve given the player the ability to manipulate both sides - it would’ve been the perfect example of how it’s the choices we make determine our fate, because in the end the cult would have self-destructed.
    -I think, in general, I think that this game should’ve been about Billie taking down the cult, not the Outsider.
    -The ‘choice’ theme. At least, I think Arkane wanted this to be a theme. The Outsider talks about Billie having a choice, his whole creation revolved around him not having a choice, human beings are the ones who make their own choices, etc. Once again, this is ruined by the Outsider not giving Billie a choice at the beginning of the game.

    And now, the things that I liked:

    -On a very superficial level, I like the non-lethal ending. It's not very realistic, but still nice.
    -The hollows were cool. Kinda pointless, but cool, nonetheless.
    -It’s still fun to play. Billie’s powers are great, the exploration is fun, and the puzzles are still fun to solve.
    -Worldbuilding and the overall aesthetic was still cool.

    As you can see, based on the above, the things I like about the game are not the things that are important to me in a game    … Expand

I really enjoyed more of the Dunwall and its universe, and its expertly crafted levels, excellent variety of ways to play, and great ambiance and world building. Other games say it, but the Dishonored franchise really truly lets you resolve situations multiple ways, and each humongous level is a mini-open-worldThis is Dishonored 2.5, with a conclusion to the story of the first two games. I really enjoyed more of the Dunwall and its universe, and its expertly crafted levels, excellent variety of ways to play, and great ambiance and world building. Other games say it, but the Dishonored franchise really truly lets you resolve situations multiple ways, and each humongous level is a mini-open-world with tons of these choices. A lovely experience and I'm looking forward to the next new IP from Arkane, although I would gladly play another Dishonored if they found a way to do it.… Expand

    As a massive fan of Disonored 1 & 2 this stand alone extra which I got on the day of release by preorderering for £15 didn't disappoint. New powers, new weapons. I was very surprised they didn't just reuse any of the last games levels. I can't give it a 10 because that means there can never be a better game. Brilliant story, brilliant gameplay. I love this game which I stretched 20 hours out of one play through. Also there's a new game plus mode letting you use the Disonored 2 powers. I can't stop playing.    … Expand

    Dishonored: Death of the Outsider is, as expected, a DLC for Dishonored 2 which can be launched without the base game installation. Of course it would be weird for it to be an entry point into the series when you can grab a Dishonored 1 Definitive edition for perhaps even cheaper.

    Anyway, it is more of the good ol' Dishonored - intricate complex level design, amazingly-written lore, cool powers to play with and overall exemplary open-ended game design with many options to complete your objective. The standout new power is Semblance, allowing you to steal any NPC's identity, which can lead to an easier way of completing your task, or just some cool minor interactions, like getting saluted by guards.

    There are also two subtle but important changes that are aimed at encouraging the player to try out new playstyles. First, the are no mana potions, it regenerates over time instead, encouraging you to mix and match powers as you see fit, which is great for a potion-hoarder like me. I would say though, that a 4th power would've come in handy, as Lurk's arsenal feels fairly restricted compared to the other protagonists. Secondly, the Chaos system is gone, as is the "Clean Hands" achievement, which means you are no longer punished for the lethal approach. While it's not a big issue for a DLC like this, considering that Dishonored's gameplay systems are built around the lethal/non-lethal choice, I think it would be better to concentrate on evolving the Chaos system rather than getting rid of it altogether.

    DotO's main weakness remains the same throughout the whole franchise - it is the main story. While it is as immersive as usual to read on this world's lore and learn of a new cult, Daud's motivation for killing the Outsider is pretty lame, and his whiny dialogue is pretty tedious. Billie Lurk is also far from being a compelling character, lacking any distinct personality. The final "convincing Daud to spare the Outsider" dialogue is just plain cliche and dull. Another complaint I'd voice is that the devs recycled a level here, which seems lazy considering they've never done it before.

    Still, I always welcome a new dose of Dishonored. At this point Arkane Studios don't really need to prove themselves after the first two Dishonored's and Prey, but it's good to know they haven't dropped the bar. My careful non-lethal playthrough where I tried to explore everything the game had to offer lasted a surprising 14 hours, give or take. I hope that DotO doesn't mark the end of the franchise, as there is still so much to explore in this lovingly-crafted world. So, on to Tyvia or Pandyssia, maybe?    … Expand

    Considering it is a less ambitious game than the two previous Dishonored, I think this is actually very good: nice story (especially if you are a Dishonored fan) and similar gameplay to that of Dishonored 2, which is the best of the three games in my opinion. Frankly, I prefer Death of the Outsider to the first Dishonored.

    While this is nothing like Dishonoured & Dishonoured 2 in terms of quality play, variety and development of charters and story telling during the game its still a very good stealth, action and adventure experience. quite short but its OK for an expansion/standalone I just thought there will be a better/more end to cap the trilogy of the brilliant Dishonoured than death of the outsider butWhile this is nothing like Dishonoured & Dishonoured 2 in terms of quality play, variety and development of charters and story telling during the game its still a very good stealth, action and adventure experience. quite short but its OK for an expansion/standalone I just thought there will be a better/more end to cap the trilogy of the brilliant Dishonoured than death of the outsider but its maybe still coming in Dishonoured 3.… Expand

    As usual, perfect work Arkane. Game graphics look perfect at the moment. Obviously, the gameplay is still fascinating, as it was in the other parts. The story is a conclusion of dishonored, and I highly recommend to escape this part, if you have escaped two others.

    The game does seem wanting of being in the 3rd person. For a stealth game especially, it's important to know one's position better than a 1st person can show you. Games like Styx or Splinter Cell Blacklist were much better in this regard and made the overall gameplay funner. In 1st person you're just more prone to being discovered when you think you are hidden or you could fall in a hole because you weren't specifically looking at your feet - which is resolved in 3rd person or real life because of peripheral vision.

    Another grievance against this game is a particular Contract where you have to execute every enemy on a level (except one specific guy). I never found everyone no matter how many times I combed it over. And I played the mission twice just to finish that contract. I've seen this same problem on a number of forums. The game doesn't tell you how many are left or where they are. A glitch of an enemy never spawning is a possibility with such prevalence of the problem. It's a very frustrating aspect of game design when the player is left not knowing what to do or obviously if the game is glitching.    … Expand

    Another heartfelt and atmospheric addition to the world of the Outsider; it's dark and eerie and bleak but works incredibly well. The game is short but certainly packs a lot of action and story into a few hours. The entire end section of the game was surprisingly heart-wrenching, and the whole ending sequence really stuck with me in an odd way; I hadn't expected it to be as moving as it is.

Most all of the time, you can be seen and trip all alarms and run away and wait for the authorities to give up the chase. Because you can teleport, it is extremely easy to beat the a.i.     Flat out, I do not like limited open world levels for these kinds of games. “Deus Ex Mankind Divided” had this mechanic and it was as frustrating then as it is now. Because most doors are fake, you cannot just go anywhere and do anything. Everything is a poorly planned environmental puzzle that has a one proper way to proceed and a few other glitchy ways to proceed. Don’t give me the ability to teleport to a window and then make only one window functional. Don’t say a door is breakable if I can’t break it. Don’t litter your map with NPCs to incapacitate if there are no closets to stuff them in.

    The game world itself did not age well. Often you will run into twins and triplets chasing after you because the developer made only a few crude looking character models. The lighting in the game is terrible. If you made the game dark like they want, you can’t see anything. Turn up the brightness and your screen will burn out your eyes. Other games in the PS4 generation had HDR. Why were Bethesda studios so behind on this?

    Stealth is ok. Enemies react to sound and seeing you. Like Dishonored 2, enemies are a little too perceptive. There are no shadows dark enough for this thief. In one part, an NOC alerted another NPC, which is a bit of a cheat. On the other hand, I once used an NPC to explode something and it counted as a silent action for me, the player. Full disclosure: I played this from my PS+ collection on PS5. Fast loading meant more time trying different strategies. The backlog of PS+ Extra means I cared little for reading the made up back story of these video game characters. This game only means something to me if it is fun to play, and it is only middling so. This stealth genre has really fallen on hard times.    … Expand

    An expansion to Dishonored 2. It is set not long after the conclusion of Dishonored 2 and has Billie Lurk as main character. The Outsider is a mysterious being in the Dishonored world. He is a resident in the void a place in between realms and has godlike powers. For some he is a god, for others a demon and some even question his existence. He is neutral and does not interfere much. He has given his mark which grants a set supernatural abilities only to a few people in all the years as he was interested in their tales. The story itself is good but also weaker and not as engaging and immersive as Dishonored 1 or 2. Billie Lurk, Daud and the Outsider are favorite characters and you learn a lot about them (especially the Outsider). Remark: Good fan-service as alone from Billies appearance I can tell the canon outcomes for some events in Dishonored 2. Like the other entries in the franchise it is a stealth game and it is your decision how to approach like head on attacking or like a ghost unseen. It has a few differences from the other games. There is no chaos system in place and the levels stay the same no matter how many guards you kill or if you do a no killing play through (I did it in all 3 games as it was a good challenge). You get your sets of abilities early on but cant learn new abilities or improve them. The rest is like the other games. You have big levels to approach and multiple strategies or paths for you to chose. I like experimenting with different ways. There are also some optional contracts for you to take (Unlock on the black market) but beware some require to kill the target so it is an obstacle for a no killing playtrough. The level design in general is weaker than in Dishonored except maybe the bank. With the awesome Dishonored 2 they set the standards to high for this. It is however not disappointing enough to drag down the rating much lower. I still had fun. What the games does right is the conclusion. A fitting ending and a set up for so many possibilities for Dishonored 3. Since Mass Effect 3 I point out that this is a must have for story driven games. Overall a solid expansion that is satisfying but a bit weaker than the main game. Worth playing for fans and even worth a look for non fans but I would recommend to play the games in order.… Expand

    Despite being marketed as a stand alone experience I wouldn't recommend this game to anyone who isn't a huge fan of the franchise, otherwise you will have no stake in what happens.
    This game manages to use three of the most interesting characters in the Dishonored franchise and not do anything with them, or change them so completely you wonder what's the point.

    Billie - despite being the lead - gets no motivation of her own and no character growth. Nothing she does seems to be her own choice save for the one and only choice the game let's you make and even then her reasoning seems absent.

    Daud, despite being alive and so having to be low chaos Daud, seems to have regressed to even before Dishonored 1. His reasoning to kill the Outsider makes no sense considering what he says in his own DLCs, and what the story tells you has happened to him since that time makes no sense either. It genuinely seems like the people who wrote this forgot there were other stories that featured him and simply started with a blank character. The few things that happen with him in the rest of this game make little sense either.

    The Outsider meanwhile has changed from the enigmatic figure he was in Dishonored 1 or the slightly more emotional but still somewhat detached figure he was in Dishonored 2 to an emotional volatile wreck. Perhaps that would have worked if they had spent any time on his character in this game, explored his motivations a little, but they do not.

    The story itself is very unsatisfying as well. Like I said before, Billie is missing any motivation of her own or character growth, meaning you're left with an empty shell you will only feel attachment to if you played D1 DLC and D2. Nothing you do in the game feels like your accomplishment either because Billie is literally handed everything she needed to succeed. The whole plot goes 'we need to do this, well here's this MacGuffin we suddenly know exists and poof it's in your possession/ reach.'

    There are strictly speaking targets in the game, they'rejust not mentioned and not part of your mission. You can go after them and some will have minor consequences in the world but really the game does not really focus on that. The only thing it focuses on is getting the next plot (often literal) device.

    The contracts are extra things you can do, but they really only offer some filler. They have no real consequences, are really bare bones when it comes to plotting and have no choices to be made. "Get this" "kill this person" that kind of thing.
    I avoided doing the ones that required killing during the first mission because I had managed to avoid all spoilers, meaning I was unaware that this game actually got rid of the main mechanic of the Dishonored games. The Chaos System.

    I will never understand why they got rid of their defining mechanic. It boggles the mind. I still finished my first playthrough as what would have been low chaos, but it felt a bit hollow. After all succeeding means nothing if there's no chance for failure. The second time around I killed everything in sight and man was it easy. High chaos has always been easier, but in this no chaos playground it was ridiculous. It did make Billie's final morality speech hilarious.

    The entire plot only has one choice to make - you probably know which one - and you can always unlock both endings. Doesn't matter what you did or didn't do, there's only one dialogue option that determines the outcome. And what a disappointment that was.

    First off, despite there being hints in the other titles about what the Outsider's end could mean for the universe this takes place in, this game seems to ignore all of that. It fails to explore any of it. It even fails to explain to us why Billie would or wouldn't kill the Outsider. The ending also felt very abrupt, with just two epilogue slides that clearly leave the door open for Arkane to milk this franchise that probably should have stopped after the D1 DLCs rather than repeating plots in D2 and now refusing to stay consistent with their own storytelling in DOTO.

    The gameplay is fine, though far too easy. The ng+ is badly implemented, still sticking you with preset powers you can't even upgrade. That along with the lack of a Chaos system or choices really kills the replay value.
    The game also reuses so many assets from Dishonored 2, even a whole level. It even reuses its own levels.

    If you're interested in this game, I'd wait for a sale because at 30 bucks I felt duped.    … Expand

Nothing of interest has developed graphics wise, this game did come out very fast after the second game, so no surprise there. They also took the liberty of reusing some levels, which would be a problem if the game costs $60, but instead it costs $30. Again, this is more like a D-2.5 not a D-3.     Billy isn't that bad of a character, just a little underwhelming. A person said that because she is in the game it is just an SJW mess. Not really. There is no racial tension in the game, unlike some other games and movies. Billy is just Billy.
    This game does well on presenting new and creative powers. You don't feel like Corvo or Emily with a new face.
    Its story is not half-bad and how the Outsider was dealt with was phenomenal.    … Expand

The story is really cool and getting in touch with the Outsider, his lore and psychology is extremely interesting.     It has the same taste as the other Dishonored games, but I wouldn't recommend it to someone who isn't a fan of the series. It has a nice story and it keeps the good graphics and gameplay of the previous game.

    Although this is ultimately just more Dishonored, fans now have five more missions to play and some new powers to test out. Those who didn’t like the original games or who feel burned out on the franchise won’t find anything here to change their minds, but if this is, indeed, Arkane’s sendoff for the series, they went out on a good note.

    In contrast to Emily or Corvo Billie does not offer the sense of true power, which might be disappointing to some, but to me was refreshing. Death of the Outsider provides just five missions, but one of them is so good and so extensive that I replayed it over and over again to find every alternative path and hidden event. [12/2017, p.70]
