Like many other Disgaea games out there, this one is focused on revenge, with a somewhat more mature story. Without spoiling the game, the story follows Killia and teammates on getting revenge on Lord Dark. I would say this is a must buy if you like tatical games that also require a little grinding.

It is turnbased and takes place on several set and random boards on which you position yourself, which adds more strategic elements to the game.
That being said I would summarise its bad points as being too cartoony, a horrible and boring story and the most annoying thing about it being the fact that a game like this, taking 100's of hours to fully complete, has one combat- and one menusong.. You can feel your braincells killing themselves.

    Anyway, nothing Spotify can't remedy.

I'd advise this game to any strategy-gamer!

Those mini-systems are gradually presented throughout the game and can be overwhelming if you're not comfortable with more detailed JRPGs.
The greatest thing for me is that every one of these systems is open and infinite, giving your characters endless possibilities (as opposed to, say, FF Tactics, where you could max out every stat and class, visit every place and so on). At the same time, you don't have to excel in every single one of these systems to beat the game, giving you a choice on where to focus on.
The graphics are good and fun and do their job, but they are PS3 level and I did expect more for a full-price game.
The really bad thing is the sound. You spend loads of time on base, managing characters and inventories and watching conversations and events, and the soundtrack for it is one single measly song. A good j-pop song, but ONE song running forever in a loop. It is very easy to get annoyed by it. I'm 40 hours into the game and the lyrics are etched forever in my mind. I think there are no more than ten songs in the whole game.
The story is nothing out of the ordinary. It feels like you're reading a mediocre-to-good manga. But some of the characters are very cute and relatable and make you care for the unfolding of events.
In spite of sound and graphics, it's a very good RPG and I recommend it if you have the time for it.

Story wise it takes itself a tiny bit more seriously (even if there is a whole chapter dedicated to curry) and the English language voice acting is particularly bad this time round (for which I have deducted a point) but it's still a bloody great game, with far too much to do, and I fully expect to put several 100 hours into it. If you've even considered the possibility you may like a turn based tactic game then give this a go, it's by far the best there is.

People who work at Electronic Arts and are responsible for inflicting Dragon Age: Inquisition upon the world should be locked in a prison with nothing but a PlayStation 4 and this game and if at the end of their sentence they still want to talk about market research and 3D action adventure then you need to take those people and shackle them together and make them pick up trash on the side of the highway for the rest of their natural lives because they will never, ever, ever understand what it means to make a game. I am so bloody tired of corporate crap-fests puked up by committees of soul-less hipster robots.

This game is the absolute antithesis of Electronic Arts. This game is a refutation of focus groups, branding, iPhones, touch screen, and Facebook integration.

Characters can now be promoted up in class without going though the reincarnation system that forced a reset in character level. I'm unsure if it was level, or a skill requirement, but when I met the requirement for my mage she promoted up from red to green in battle. The assembly is still an option along with reincarnation, but it's not a requirement anymore.

Unlocking new classes is a bit more straight forward. A quest system has been added, and it seems a bit trivial at first, but since it does give you quests that have the same requirements previous games had for unlocking a class you're not as dependent on prior knowledge, or on internet search skills.

Resident mechanics seem improved since now you have a way of banking them without juggling them accost items.

All in all it's everything you'd expect from Disgaea, with improvements.

Just to make sure, I'm at a bias here because Disgaea series always my favorite games since ps2 era. This game is simply improvement of the previous. The complexity is the vocal of my interest of this game. The battle system offers you so much at how to beat enemy group and the environment hazard add fun to this a lot. The story is a hit and miss like usual though.

For poorer folks like me who have very little money to go around Disgaea 5 is a godsend. With the wide selection of characters, and the numerous variations with classes, and the fact that they can all go to level 9999; this game lasts a very very long time. You never run out of places to battle either since the Item World randomly generates itself, with each randomly crafted stage providing a new selection of strategic ways to tackle it. It takes a while to get the basics down and expand on the overwhelmingly massive amount of selections to choose from but you'll have plenty of time to prefect your playstyle since this game can support itself for hundreds of hours. You can quite literally build your own army from scratch and use them to conquer every obstacle in your path. Customizing every aspect of each individual soldier along the way, from colors, to voices, to stats and weapons, there are an endless number of combinations for you to experiment with. For those willing to put in the time you'll find yourself beaming with pride at the army you've raised from rags to riches.

    Danganronpa
    Fire Emblem
    Atelier Totori

    THE GOOD:

GAMEPLAY: More fun than any Disgea title yet. Many new mechanics have been added on the battlefield and off. I'll delve more into gameplay later in this review.

GRAPHICS: About what Disgea fans expect. Backgrounds have been improved but still have a ways to go.

STORY: Rather dull at the beginning but gets intriguing halfway through and the ending was great. Disgea 5 didn't have an animation at the end which was dissapointing but still delivered nonetheless.

CHARACTER CAST: Is great except one. The big stupid muslehead type character in this game is rather bad. Persona 4 pulled this character type off with Kanji but Disgea 5 couldn't hit that same note.

VOICE ACTING: Great voice acting. On par with Disgea 4. This game is voice acted about 80 percent of the time.

GAMEPLAY TIME: Legnthy story mode and endgame content can claim hundreds of hours. If you plan to only play the story mode, expect 50 to 60 hours of gameplay time.

Lots of new classes including pirates, sages, undead maids, wrestlers, two headed dragons, and more.

    THE BAD

Some classes have been removed that was on previous Disgea titles. Tree giants, upright dragons, flame head knights, armor knights and more.

To get your favorite characters from past games now requires buying thier dlc. Usually 4 dollars for a set of three characters and some levels that have to be beaten to unlock them. I guess the good thing is that you can play with them from the start but I still didn't think this was the right decision. Also, Plenair cannot be recruited unless you buy the season pass which i believe is now unavailable.

    IN DEPTH REVIEW:

There are many new functions that have been added to Disgea 5 and I'll list some of these here.

CURRY SHOP, you can make curry here that can be used during battle for various benefits.
SQUAD MANAGER, you can assign members to squads for benefits in and out of battle.
CHARA WORLD, play a board game here to increase your party members appitudes.
QUEST SHOP, complete quest here to obtain items and recruitable characters.
ITEM SYNTHESIS SHOP, create items here, very similar to dragon quest 7s method of item synthesis.
INNOCENT FARM, you can breed innocents here.

These new added functions along with a few others help make this Disgea title one of the best. The new gameplay mechanics are a nice addition to the Disgea series as well. Montoss now allows monters to throw though they can't end a turn lifting. Revenge mode is an awesome addition added as well. Main charceters have a special ability they can use once they fill up thier revenge gauge, you can fill this up by taking damage.

That wraps this review up, Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Because there is so much to learn about this series, veterans should have no problem breezing through this game(and by breezing I mean 30+ hours), but if you're new to this genre(or game in particular) prepare to spend a few hours in dungeons alone killing the same enemies over and over again to level up. If you enjoy the grind though, you will absolutely love this game!

It has the basic strengths of the Disgaea series with lovable quirky characters, an immersive story with a lot of dark humor and gameplay for easily hundred hours. To be fair the characters took a bit longer to win me over but then completely succeeded. The story uses complete new characters and is set in another demon realm with countless worlds or neatherrealms. Each is ruled by an overlord. The overlord Void Dark is conquering world after world with his army called Lost. He seems unstoppable. Our team of former overlords is forming an army to stop him. Sounds on first glance generic but is far more interesting and has a lot of dark humor. The characters are great but it took longer than the other games to amaze me. There is Killia who is a force to be recognized that flees from his past and wants to destroy Void Dark. There is Serpahina a princess that wants to charm all males to serve her. Red Magus is more muscles than brains and wants to become the strongest overlord. Christo became a favorite and you will see why when you uncover his story. Usalia is another favorite and has Naruto or better said Kurama vibes (meant positive by the way). Zeroken is a self proclaimed martial arts master but good hearten. Those work excellent. Together with the story we get a great experience. This would not be an amazing game if the gameplay was not good. As per franchise standard we get a lot. While other RPGs cap at level 99 here you can reach level 9999 (no typo) and even reincarnate to increase you stats further. You can improve items in the item world and characters in something that I consider a board mini game. I really enjoyed the last a lot and I would like to see this mechanic return in the next games. You can also throw teammates (do this carefully with Prinnies). There are colored Geo panels with pyramids given effects. Destroying them can cause chain reactions that damage all characters on them. The game has a lot of depth and you can easily get 100 hours of playtime out of it in a single playthrough. As in every Disgaea game there is a lot of content you can unlock after beating the main story. New for this game is a revenge mode. Think of it as limit breaks like in Final Fantasy 7. Receiving damage fills the gauge and when it is full you enter the revenge mode. Here you get a bit of damage resistance and abilities just cost 1 skill point to use. Beware this is also valid for enemies and you enter it automatically. There is a side quest shop where you can take side quests (Limited number!). Some are just “get this item” or “defeat x enemies” while other unlock new stuff. Another addition are squads. Characters get some bonuses in these and the more you improve these the more useful those get. There is now the ability to farm and change innocents to improve your items (Great addition). Lastly there is the curry shop. Curries improve your skills before battle and some are really useful. Graphically you see the increased power of the hardware. It looks more beautiful than ever and the unique style of the series was unchanged. The soundtrack works as well as in the other games. Overall this is again a strong entry in the franchise and worth playing. It has the strengths of the franchise with great characters, dark humor and lots of good gameplay. Expand

If you’ve played the other Disgaea’s, definitely give this one a shot - while the characters are oddly non-Disgaeaesque in a weird way, the gameplay is a refined version of previous episodes. In particular, the transition from phase to phase, even the grind of the post-game, was much smoother.

If you like Studio Trigger stuff in anime, the feel of this series is very Kill La Kill and Gurren Lagann.

And if you like to grind, this is grinder’s heaven. It’s not necessary to complete the regular plot line of the game, but if you want to, there’s a HUGE post-game as well as new-game+.

If you haven’t played one, then the closest game to Disgaea is Final Fantasy Tactics. At least in gameplay, but not spirit and character - that’s something truly unique to Disgaea. It makes you feel like you’re cheating. Really. It “lets” you do things that you wish all the other similar games would, even the ridiculous ones. Toss characters around. Undo movements of characters and receiving a heal in the corner. Wear 3 pairs of shoes. Level unrestrainedly. Almost limitless control over item features and strengths. That and the characters and situations are crazy and funny. It’s always a good time.

Gameplay is smooth and the controls are very fluid. It’s a strategy game, so it’s not like you need fast reflexex, but there are places where you can grind and do the same battle over and over for varying reasons, and you can generally count on a menu system that makes sense and has lots of shortcuts, so that you can select things repeatedly.

It’s a fairly creative and interesting work that they build. Maybe I’ve seen too many Disgaeas, so it’s not super different from previous ones, but it’s still memorable.

The music is a real strong suit. Not quite as good as wanting to listen to it outside the game and after I beat it, but there’s a large selection of music, and you have control over what music you want to hear in your base or Item World, including a random medley of songs you choose.

Visuals are cute. It’s not mind-blowing graphics in the epic and artistic sense, but character designs are really well done. It’s deliberately cartooney but well drawn. Both animated sprites and cut scene detail drawings. Have to take a point off for fan service though. All women are exploding-boob barbie types. Yeah they’re literal Succubi, but still, can’t we at least include normal women as well? Yeah the Thief and Archer aren’t sexualized, but that’s about it.

Characters are a mixed bag. Some were fun, some were weird but interesting, and a handful were just annoying. Other than Sera (who is annoying but has her moments), most main characters are cool, though. However, the antagonists are pretty rough and shallow.

Plotline’s interesting but nothing to write home about. It’s a series of excuses to get into battles. Don’t look for anything as deep as the actually interesting FFT plot line.

Emotional engagement is mainly pretty low but it has a couple hard-hitting moments.

The replayability is very high, as there’s both a post game and a new game plus. And with the amount of things to play with even in post game, you can keep from being bored even when grinding, as there’s always more than one thing to work on or do.

Difficulty is a bit hard to place. There’s a literal sliding scale difficulty setting in the game that you can shift around, but that’s generally for deliberately raising levels in some places to grind and bring people up in stats. You can’t turn it down “below normal”. I’d say that 80% of the game is fairly easy, though there are a few surprisingly difficult stages. The post-game also is not that hard in the challenging-stage sense, it’s a minmax game where you do somewhat easy things many times and build up some new skill or stat that will move you forwards. If you’re not high enough level, it’s hard. But you can grind for a while and then breeze as well. I did every Carnage World level with basically one solo character, except for the end bosses. But I was very overpowered by then.

Overall, it’s an addictive and deep game. If you like battle strategy, definitely give this whole series a shot.
