Deracine is story narrative exploration adventure. Investigate house, found clues, search for secrets, solve puzzles. if you like What Remains of Edith Finch, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, then you might like this game as well.

Miyazaki has a firm grasp on your emotions' balls and actually makes you care about what happens to this school of creepy, naive children. This game is a must for anyone willing to cough up the dough for everything required to play it. Would I actually recommend buying all the required utilities to actually play this game? Probably not, but it's 100% worth checking out. At the very least, watch a play through without commentary if you can't experience it for yourself. Expand

As a huge fan of Hidetaka Miyazaki, in my opinion one of the greatest revelations among game designers and directors in recent gaming, I bought a PSVR exclusively for playing Deraciné, knowing that despite the reviews I would find something to enjoy in this game. What I found, however, was one of my favorite interactive experiences, a simple but deeply personal story about the value of time. There is no problem with simple mechanics like those found in point and click or visual novel games, only a critical scenario that is obsessively blinded by its belief that there is a canonical evolution of game mechanics and graphics that sees games with minor focus on player skills as less valuable and hinders entire genres like JRPGs as obsolete. I am very gratified for trusting in Miyazaki to create distinct experiences instead of doing what others believe he is good at. Especially considering we are talking about a director that is known for creating some of the hardest action games that greatly impacted our industry. I am looking forward to being positively surprised once again in Sekiro. Expand

It is a really well developed adventure game that uses interesting controls and weaves a very melancholy story. In order to get the most out of the story you must be willing to explore and experiment. It will be very disappointing if you try to rush this game. It has a slow, contemplative pace but weaves a very interesting fantasy tale of faeries in an English manor. The visuals are wonderful and the story is as engaging and as deep as you are willing to explore.

For those who are considering getting Deracine based on the experience with Dark Souls, etc. (which I love dearly) need to understand that Deracine has no combat - it is a purely narrative and exploration experience.

Déraciné is a delicately told melancholy short where you play a faerie in a small boarding school. The string duo soundtrack perfectly conveys the character's woeful innocence as the sullen melodies chase each other down the hallowed halls of this unforgettable school. It's end will likely leave you with a heavy heart and throughout it's unfolding, your head will be spinning with how characters, settings, and details from this faerie tale might possibly connect to other FS titles... I’m a big fan of From Software, but this slow paced VR walk around a house is just plain boring. The story is uninteresting and makes little sense, and while the atmosphere of the house is well done, the game does little with it. I struggled to spend the 4-5 hours to beat it, and when I did, it went immediately into the garage sale.

The graphics are nice enough but it is a point and click adventure and I just didn't have any interest in the story.

I like this game first of all because it's Hidetaka Miyazaki style game. It's a mystery which become absolutely clear for you only at the very end of the game. And the truth is not that good as in fairy tales for children. Gameplay is sort of relaxing, there is no rush, it's sort of point and click game. Unusual game for VR. Kind, family, dramatic. If you want relax and not shoot, if you was child. Fairy quest. Very easy platinum trophy.

The only link between this and previous FromSoftware’s games is pain. Deracine is not painfully hard though – it’s painfully boring. It does tell a good enough story, looks fine and does VR well, but interactions it offers are very limited and it is simply not much of a game. [02/2019, p.32]

Déraciné has equally surprised and disappointed me. It's a gorgeous, story-driven experience, but the story has a few pacing issues and can drag along while not making the most of its gameplay mechanics. It's a slow burn, but if you enjoy eerie stories and atmosphere, Déraciné may be worth checking out. It certainly pulled me in and punished me for my naivete as the story grew darker by the minute.

While mechanically stiff, like an automaton, this is still a compelling VR fairy tale. Lore hunters are rewarded, but even the less dedicated will want to go digging. [Issue#157, p.89]
