In between charming art design, polished farming mechanics, and a huge array of quests and craftables, there's a lot to enjoy. There's no shortage of games available that involve chopping down trees and harvesting carrots, but Deiland is still one that fans of the genre will want to add to their collection.

Deiland is far from being perfect, but this game is perfect for all kinds of players thanks to its wonderful and entertaining style.

Deiland is a charming farming game that somehow gets away its lack of action and excitement by lulling you into a state of total relaxation.

If you want a slow-moving, brick-by-brick resource gathering sim, then this might be yours. But if you’re looking for something with deep complexity, endless creative options and rich world-building, you should probably look elsewhere.

ItThe first half of this game is a delightful little farming sim with crafting, quests, fun characters and the lightest of RPG elements. It makes the transition from mobile pretty well - the plants take a few minutes to grow but it rains frequently and that will speed it up tremendously. You have to sleep every so often to refresh your energy, but these features make enough sense that it doesn't feel like you're always skirting round what used to be a huge framework of in-app purchases. Working out what to do next is largely a relaxing and pleasant time, and there's always something to forage for. It looks utterly charming, and feels pretty good for the most part.
Features such as fences don't seem to serve a purpose and the gates aren't terribly responsive, and generally it's slightly irritating to try and get round too many trees and obstacles so it doesn't feel as fun to decorate my farmplanet as I'd like (add the tiny chicks that block your path, and it makes some things infuriating.) Ideally my review would end there, and earlier today it basically did.

However, the end half of the game is a totally different story. Obtaining wool is especially terrible (the trick is to starve your sheep!), and important stuff that unlocks a late character who herself brings a host of features seems to be both random and not explained ingame. These features might've had a use if you weren't just about to finish the game, but that's just how the last few hours go. All my quest logs are at 100%, but the game still seems to think I should head to the mines to look at that strange cleared out section again, and the final post-credits thing it did was give me explosive potions that I can't use. Maybe that means something and I missed a huge secret! But there's nothing to go on.

On top of that, it's crashed several times and I was scared to feed my chickens because eggs often result in a long, alarming screenfreeze (i've since learned you have to change your equipment to be allowed to move again) Trophies are widely reported as glitched - the ones that work seem quite generous and respectful of your time, but who wants to grind for hours on that gamble?

I see the bug has been fixed on PC. However it’s not fixed on the PS4. Waste of money when you cannot progress in the game due to a bug like this. It’s a shame. Full Review »
