I'm sorry but Death Stranding is a ultimately pointless and boring game to play. Yes the graphics look nice and it holds a couple of great moments but the gameplay itself leaves alot to be desired.

Boring and self-indulgent nonsense. Kojima believing his own hype. This the best they can do, a literal walking simulator? Pretends to be deep but is only pretentious twaddle. It's not a game, it a collection of cutscenes at most. Avoid.

I just finished it today after over 80 hours. It was awesome. Best game of the year, one of the best games of the decade! Truly a masterpiece. I'm so sad that some people could get into it. Well, it's a sing of our times that people have built walls even in their minds, which prevent them from understanding and appreciating such treasures like this one!

So I just finished the game and felt like I had to leave a review to counter a bit of the hate on here.
It took me about 49 hours to complete all the chapters, doing quite a number of side missions, but not nearly all of them.

And I just have to say that this has been one of the most unique game experiences I've had in a long time. And last time I felt so immersed in a game was last year with read dead. And contrary to what has been going around on the internet, I’ve had fun with the game from the moment I started it.
The gameplay is very strategic, deals with a lot of management and is downright addicting and thrilling. Having to move a **** ton of cargo through a challenging terrain, planning your route, planning the trip, dealing with all the obstacles and challenges along the way. Also the passing in which the map and upgrades are revealed and implemented is amazing, changing up the core gameplay with crazy bosses and other mini gameplay elements that we come to know from Kojima.
Also the online element is really cool and refreshing. Had so much fun seeing other peoples structures and signs, helping me out and making my travels easter.
The story is fun and interesting. It’s a bit mystical and has many fantasy elements. But it also deals with some more philosophical and more current subjects. Some that our friends from the US might take a bit too personal, especially coming from a non-american. And I feel like some journalists and internet media kinda showed how toxic they can be, when creators don’t show America in the fantastic light, leading the world and propagating how great of a country it is.
So I think a lot of the hate also comes from this. And the fact that they take what Kojima said about Americans liking shooters more, being taken too personal. And If you rate this game 0 because of that… Pretty pathetic I must say.

All and all, I feel like we had these sort of weird experiences a lot more in the PS2 and GameCube era. I guess gamers were a little different back then. And I don’t understand all the fuss. It’s a really, really good game. Sure, silly at times, maybe even a bit cringy. But that’s Ok. It’s unapologetically itself. And I’m pretty sure that this game will reveal itself to be a pretty big cult classic and all the downvotes in the world isn’t going to change that. Why? You might ask? Because, again, It’s really that good. You just need to give it time to breathe and don’t rush to finish it in under forty hours. And to top it all off: 1) No microtransactions 2) a completely new and super creative IP from great talents in gaming and film. 3) A story that ends and doesn’t build up to a shared universe!

I recommend this to anyone who likes strategy, the best item management since RE4, creative story, amazing environments and taking their time. Be patient and be open to what this game wants to give, and you’ll probably be as addicted and fascinated with this game as I am.

The addicting game play loop of gathering materials to construct various objects in the world (Bridges, Roads, Time Fall shelters, Recharge Stations), as well as delivering packages in good condition to get likes, stat boosts, and new items. At first the traversal mechanics can seem cumbersome, but after a while it becomes second nature and I grew to really appreciate how realistic and tactile it was. As you get further into the game and begin upgrading Sams stats and unlocking new ways of traversal it really opens up the possibilities and gives a real sand box-like experience. Vehicles are extremely fun to navigate with. I found it a fun challenge trying to climb steep cliffs with a motorcycle or truck so I could arrive with all my cargo, and the power skeletons are a godsend for maximizing the amount of gear you can travel with on foot. The acting is for the most part excellent all around. Mads Mickelson is a stand out, especially towards the end of the game. There are a few characters that come off odd, but they are relegated to side missions that aren't integral to the games story. The story is so intriguing and deep and it makes you want to get down to the bottom of what is going on in it's bizarre and stunning world. Sometimes the way it is fed to you can be a little on the nose or strange, but it didn't detract from the story it was trying to tell overall. There are so many memorable moments that impacted me on a deep emotional level. Game graphics need no comment, as they are easily the best looking graphics of the generation. Performance was extremely solid on my PS4 slim and I didn't encounter a single glitch or noticeable drop in frame rate. Character, enemy, and environment design is all top notch. Everything has had a painstaking amount of detail poured into it and it truly shows. Bosses are such a spectacle and can be quite challenging if you are unprepared to deal with them. Normal BT's are extremely nerve racking when you encounter them and have led to some truly intense and memorable moments. At the end of the day there is truly no game like Death Stranding. The best way I can describe it is an experience. When I completed it, it felt like I had been on an epic journey that I had put my blood, sweat, and tears into. Riding the highest highs and crushing lows right along with Sam. It's a game that can only be fully appreciated and understood by actually playing through it entirely. I truly believe that once the dust on controversy has settled, people will look back on Death Stranding as one of the best and most important pieces of entertainment media ever created. Up there with the likes of Inception and the Lord of the Rings. I will never forget my time with Death Stranding, and as I completed my journey I was sad that I will never be able to experience it for the first time again. For those who are on the fence about this game, please give it a try and go into it with an open mind. If you can actually make it to the end of the journey, there is no way you could call this anything less than a great game. For me, it is a masterpiece and sits atop the throne of my favorite games of all time. This is my honest review of the game and I give it my score not to combat the bad scores, but because it's just how I feel about the game. Expand

Ironically, a game that is all about connecting people and bringing them together, Death Stranding is the most divisive title of the decade. Being able to enjoy this game comes down to whether or not you're able to appreciate games as an art form or if you only play games for fun.

In Death Stranding you play as Sam, a package delivery guy snatched into the service of an organization trying to re-establish a nationwide network in post-apocalyptic America. You pick up delivery orders and traverse the distance between the cities - mostly on foot. If you feel like pulling a heavy load of cargo across long distances on challenging terrain is a drag, you would be correct. But make no mistake, this is by design. As mentioned earlier this game is all about making connections and building bridges - both literally and figuratively. Death Stranding continuously highlights how much harder things are to do on your own by creating a stark contrast between making deliveries to a new location for the very first time and returning to a place you already connected to the others. Bringing nodes online shares the area with other players, allowing you to use equipment, vehicles and structures they left behind by other Sams moving through. Using paths in common with others also clears the terrain from rocks and creates natural dirt paths. You can even co-operate with other players and build paved roads spanning great distances around and above otherwise dangerous areas.

Most of Death Stranding's gameplay mechanics have to do with cargo. Whether carrying things as the main gameplay loop is something you can enjoy or not is entirely up to your personal preference, but it's undeniably well designed. Sam has a limit to how much he can carry, both in weight and volume. The shape and weight of his cargo loadout affects his stability and movement speed. His ability to maintain his balance is affected by many things, like slopes, terrain and the sharpness of his turns. You have complete control over Sam, but he also has momentum. The only time I ever had to fight the controls was when I was trying to interact with the floating cargo carrier I was dragging behind me. The game also has combat features that should feel very familiar to Metal Gear Solid players, although with much less variety.

To keep this review spoiler free, I'm not going to discuss the story in much detail. The world of Death Stranding is strange and fascinating, with bits and pieces of the details fed to the player as Sam progresses across the continent. In typical Kojima fashion the story is both another strong point of the game and sometimes comes off a little preachy. The dialogue also misses a few beats.

    Positives:
+ the world and the characters are excellent
    + a truly unique game

    Negatives:
    - has pacing issues
    - it's not for everyone

The start of the game is the only thing not letting me give this a 10, the story telling world everything is great. If you enjoy Euro Truck Simulator or games where you deliver cargo you will enjoy this, if you are a hardcore action fan who wants every moment to be crazy this isn't for you. It's slow paced and rewarding for those who choose to enjoy something instead of dismissing a game after 2 hours of game play. You wouldn't watch a movie for 10 minutes and say it's the worst movie ever made, why would you do the same with a game? Full game will likely take 38-42 hours depending on your play style.

Pissed their vehicles kept breaking down and not knowing why they can’t find generators. If you try and rush through this game you’re gonna be sorely disappointed. You actually have to prep for most mission, yes they all do boil down into fetch quests, but traversing through the environments lends enough variation that it was hard for me to become bored. Working with other players to build structures to make travel easier was probably the most rewarding for me putting in materials to help build roads only to come back later and it was completely built was an awesome experience. It’s a game where if you got it day one everything you make will make it easier for people who play it later on which is the most innovative mechanic I’ve seen in any game this year. I’m only giving it a 9 out of ten cause it gives you the option to pee on stuff just not the bosses and that’s a missed opportunity if I’ve ever seen one. Expand

The gameplay mechanic satisfyingly complements the narrative in a way that I found amusingly realistic. The game moves at a slower pace, and this pace made the game more rewarding and immersive than nearly every game I've played recently. The opening hours are very cinematic heavy, and you will feel like your play is but a footnote for the first two. But those cinematics drew me in with their eerie mystery, and I appreciated how the gameplay matched their tone. I recommend keeping an open mind and letting yourself sink into Kojima's headtrip. You won't be disappointed. Death Stranding excels at exploring wide ranges of emotions with its often perilous and then often oddly idyllic scenarios: fear gives way to hope, disconnectedness is replaced with togetherness, frailty soon transforms into empowerment. You will spend time carefully navigating jaw-droppingly beautiful landscapes. The size of the world will weigh on you, and you will feel genuine relief and empowerment when you gain new ways of traversing environments and overcoming the threats you face. The negative reviews are clearly based on the opening two chapters, and I completely agree that players will do a lot of listening, watching, and walking for the first few hours. But I found these hours especially emotional and beautiful, and I was intrigued by how this game just doesn't feel like other games. I think the negative reviews overlook how integral the early game's slow pace and terrifying world are to the game's impressive narrative arc and the amazingly crafted moments that you experience when you later survive particularly harrowing situations. It is there--when a dark corner of the world throws a seemingly impossible challenge your way, and escaping that corner reveals a beautiful landscape with new sights, sounds, and genuine feelings of relief--that this game is such a massive success. Few games, if any, excel like Death Stranding does at delivering the truly significant emotional moments that I think make gaming such a special medium. If you are looking for something deeper, odder, more unique, and more beautiful than your typical gaming fodder, I heartily recommend Death Stranding. Expand

This game reminds me of employing strategies of moving/collecting junks (and the satisfaction that followed) in Fallout games. The element is there and I can't believe Kojima-san took this element into an addicting, fun game.

Death Stranding is creating a new game genre and therefore paves its own path towards more interactive experiences. This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
