This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Kojima messed up this time. Even the spoilers on the discord before were much more fun and reasonable than the actual game.
    1. The game has a strong personal style of Kojima, perhaps he would like to control 100% of those characters’ performance, but this only leads to a result, that actors' understanding of the role are not the same as what they behaved.
    2. There's a huge gulf between the game-playing and the story plot. For a long time, it’s almost like "You can be rewarded to play as long as you've done your chores", rewarding some story after a dull (or not, depending on whether you likes to be packhorse or not) play.
    3. What the game was told, is a totally catastrophe, or say, this game has almost no narrative at all. All stories are told by everyone’s "Sam, you need to know this", even about the characters themselves! All the characters, Fragile, Deadman, Mama, Heartman and DieHard Man. Can you imagine a victim dictating her own tragic past? This is stupid.
    4. Character building is also terrible, which is the consequence of poor storytelling. All the characters dictate to the player what they are, and with too many unnecessary settings (like Deadman being a Cyborg, so what?) , it shows that Kojima is trying to instill in the player "what's the character like" Without leaving any space. Oh and besiedes, even the main theme is connection, there is no connection between most of the characters each other. They are just connecting to Sam.
    5. Comparing to others, Sam, however, is not shown much in this game. Too little characterization of Sam, and the lack of describing the relationship between Sam and Emilie throughout the story, leads to a serious discrepancy between Emilie's character and the player's understanding, and so at the climax of the game, I, and many of my friends are baffled by the act we must do to continue this game, by hugging Emilie.
    6. The main story of the game does not exist any choice, with awful characterization lead to an unconvincing end. This makes the game itself like a movie, a one-sided absorption with no way of feedback. A lot of people think Kojima should make a movie for this game, but given those conditions above, the game's narrative skills are so poor that it will turn into a horrible slapstick play.
    7. The world design is cool, and nothing else. There are too many settings are just for settings. In the game, many of the settings are even phenomenal, with no mention of the essence at all. It doesn't mean anything except, wow, this is cool.
    8. With Western-like scene and characters, yet the story is still, after all, a Japanese-style family drama. The grand design is only for a small story, and I have to say I felt wasteful.
    9. A game that makes you think about pain should not be done by making the reader or player experience pain. I'm talking about the beach walk at the end of the game.
There may be more, but due to my terrible English it’s too difficult to complain.

I have over 600 hours in this game, Platinum on PS4 and this is what a true open world game should look like. I really liked it, as it made me angry sometimes and it made me cry several times, leaving me really shell-shocked for a few days by the end.

I Really believe any that many games could use this type of open world terrain to it's fullest extent, there is just something amazing in it's scope and how it makes you feel so small compared to the world, it is wonderful, and exceedingly beautiful in a PS4 Pro, even in performance mode.

I was already a (Dark Souls reference here) Praise the Sun dude, Sun-Bro (cooperative) and Blade of the Darkmoon (anti-pk) guy before the game came out, so I had a pretty good idea how the asynchronous "strand" multiplayer would work. And so it was, I was obsessed by the notion of being able to help other players, specially those who, as I've seen in countless youtube playthroughs and twitch streams, just rushed the main quest. Man, these people suffered without unlocking the "side missions" gear upgrades. I spent countless hours building and optimizing my structures so they could serve others as best as possible, rather then myself.

Despite de game pacifist vibe, I found the so called Mules (petty thieves with some kleptomaniac disorder) and terrorists, who actually try to murder you, deserving of a punishment greater then just being knocked out or put to sleep with tranquilizer ordinance, so I murdered them all as they attacked me and delivered their cold bodies to the incinerator, as the game story will show you, bodies cannot just be left to rot.

I can't recommend this game enough. Maybe it's not for you, but I urge you to take the time to reach chapter 3 before calling the game boring or giving up, but in the end, you gotta try it yourself and make up your mind.

As for me, It was not just a game, it was a work of art that left a lasting impression.
Even as a FromSoft fanboy, I can safely say Sekiro was not the GOTY, Death Stranding should have won that.

Some people call it delivery simulator... They are so simple, unable to look through multiple layers and metaphors. If you like pure action don't even touch it. If you are into science and are intelligent go for it. You will not regret. Hideo Kojima is a genius.

This is game is the definition of boring. But I'll start with the good things.

. The soundtrack is pretty. Not great, but it packs a nice punch. . The story is deep and emotional, characters are memorable and everything just feels genuinely original. . Despite its flaws, the story kept me going and curiosity got me hooked,

As for the bad things... Well, all the rest.
. The gameplay loop starts decent and fun, but ultimately overstays its welcome and becomes overly dull and repetitive.
. The story is great and unique, but MY GOD it is convoluted and tiresome!
. Why does it need to repeat the same cutscenes and messages again and again? It should skip it automatically.
. TOO MANY TUTORIALS! TOO MANY THINGS ON SCREEN! TOO MANY USELESS NEW ITEMS! JUST LET ME *UCKING WALK!
. Unrewarding long and unnecessary sidequests.
    . Bosses are a joke.
. From the UI to the information displayed throughout the game, everything just feels... Messy.

Kojima, I still think you're a genius, but you missed the mark with this one, buddy.

    Score: 7.5

    The Good:
    -Visual impact *10/10
    -Storyworld *10/10
    -Sound design *10/10
    -Memorable characters *9/10
    -Gameplay loop is therapeutic *7/10

    -Atmosphere *9/10

    The bad:
    -Narrative & delivery *5/10
    -Gameplay & mechanics *4/10
    -Controls, particularly vehicles *3/10.
    -UI & menues *4/10
    -Plot *5/10

Areas I want to elaborate on:
-Narrative & delivery: I remember several scenes where I'm told "this works this way" only later to be told or have something happen that contradicts the "rules". The contents of the story got me hooked effectively, but the delivery of the story points left something to be desired. Uninspired and boring.

-Social Strand genre/mechanics: Hideo Kojima claims to have invented a new genre. The idea of connecting with other players by the means of liking and sharing objects in the gameworld. This idea was novel and I really enjoyed it. It made me think about the potential and how I would use it going forward.

-Memorable characters: the way characters have been written and are presented to me is very Anime. The idea that a character is a manifestation of a quirk or a gimmick. It doesn't write authentic characters, but it writes memorable ones that feel unique and you get what they are about immediately. Also Margeret Qualley's character(s) are hot. Ahem.

    Quickfire points:
-The storyworld (world building etc.), AKA: the collective of lore, world and mythos, is gorgeous and inspiring.
-Atmosphere gets you in the ZONE.
-A lot of care and effort put into the sound design. The sound effects are the star of the show along with:
-The visuals. You are gonna be awestruck by what you see in this game.

My subjective score for this game is an 8 but my subjective score is a 7.5. Where Death Stranding doesn't succeed, in my humble opinion, is in the game design.

I honestly feel like this is most beautiful game in existence, the graphics, environments, backgrounds are all incredibly stunning, especially during the last chapters of the game, but even immense beauty and a good story doesn't make up for its numerous bad mechanics and gameplay.

The gameplay of receiving, managing and then mostly struggling to deliver cargo from point A-to-B gets incredibly tiring and tedious after a while, and let's face it, it is a job, but it doesn't pay you well enough. I mean good story and beautiful environments is nice, but it is not enough of a payment for the amount of work you do, and helping co-workers and getting help from your co-workers (strand network) is also nice, but I still felt unappreciated for amount of things I set-up vs the amount of help and likes I got.

The choice to put rough terrain in the majority of this America that is designed to slow you, ruin your cargo and vehicle, just so you would have the job over and over again with no eventual complete way past it, aside from taking it slow or using a different slower route is horrible (zip-lines are a thing but they cost too much to set up, and I reached my chiral capacity way too quickly of which I had 26k).

I just want this job to be over with but Kojima (our boss) is making it long and dreadful, and for what reason? Filler? I don't understand the design choice of making my delivery job as painful as possible, and why are there so much rocks? It just doesn't make sense.

There are also delivery companies (UPS, Canada Post, Amazon) that get to listen to music on route to delivery, but our boss Kojima doesn't allow it, except for on special rare occasions that he deems fit and our travels are much rougher than theirs, any sane employee would be mad at their boss for such things but there is always gonna be delusional workers that love their job no matter what happens and that is the exact case with Death Stranding.

Also, Kojima likes to use out of date software, with upgraded hardware, its infuriating, like why do I have to skip 2 different scenes just to recycle, and why do those skips have confirmation windows with slight pauses in between, same thing applies to:
    - taking a shower
    - entering a safe house
    - leaving a safe house
    - pooing
    - peeing

Aside from all those problems, I still feel as though the beauty, story, music, and acting of the game make up for some of it and that is why I gave it a 6.

I hope other developers and developers to come make note of this. You can gamify anything. For the longest time, games have been about shooting and killing. This is includes open world games. But games can be about anything, especially open world games Death Stranding proves that.

Usually I separate the bad and the good in my user reviews. Death Stranding is such a unique entity that it is impossible to separate the bad from the good because the bad might be the good. The game begins like a slow “walking simulator”. The player character is a porter who carries goods on his back and makes his way through a barren post apocalyptic landscape while a song from a little known Icelandic group plays in the background. I can understand how gamers, including professional reviewers, would be slow to warm up to this game. My advice for new players is to keep going. Like Kojima’s Metal Gear series, Death Stranding keeps adding gameplay elements and tools for the player character to overcome obstacles. By the end, this game is as relentless as any. Basically, a game like Death Stranding is for finishers.

The premise of the game is connecting people. The player character does this by transporting goods from one location to the other. Traversing terrain is not trivial but also not impossible. You can be strategic and lay out a path with ladders and climbing ropes in the early game and larger structures in the later game. Or you can try to shove a vehicle over the rocks and through streams. Anyone familiar with the Halo series knows that you can eventually fit a vehicle into a space that it is not supposed to go. This is only a portion of the game. The other portion, if you want it to be, is kicking ass.

The game gives the player character a progressively more powerful arsenal to defeat enemies. You start by using fists to knock out humans and end by using assault rifles and rocket launchers. The game is very clear that human enemies are not to be killed. No spoilers except to say that dead bodies are difficult to deal with. That doesn’t stop the player character from ramming humans with vehicles or knocking them out with rubber bullets. You can be stealthy like Metal Gear Solid if you want to, and the multitude of options is what separates a magnificent game from a decent game.

An arsenal of weapons also becomes available to deal with ghosts, a.k.a. BTs. No spoilers here. The player confronts ghosts in the opening cutscene. You start out playing a survival horror game and finish in monster slaying game. At some point you have to realize that Death Stranding is a video game and the ghosts are NPCs that follow rules. You can rely on stealth like with humans or you can also go in guns blazing to clear an area. Preparation and strategy is all up to the player and I love it.

The real gem of this game is the connection with other players. Although you never see the other players in you game, right from the start, you will see structures built by other players. You will build a bridge and another player will use it. You will find cargo lost by other players that you can use or return to them. Some structures will be partially built by other players and finished by you. During an intense fight, an avatar of another player will toss you items to help you. I found myself growing more communal, and sending items I did not need to a shared locker instead of my private locker. I built bridges to make the game easier for new players. I was effusive with likes to other players. I would love to see more of this.

If I have any criticism of Death Stranding, its in the UI for handling inventory. After about 40 hours of play, I still have difficulty understanding when to hold the X button to go back to the menu or when hit the O button to cancel a selection. The inventory system in Death Stranding is a bit unique in that each item is a fully modeled object. You can see how the items load into the player character’s backpack. There is no magic bag of infinite volume and finite weight like Skyrim or a grid of boxes to fill like The Witcher. I merely wish there were a few tweaks to make the UI easier to understand.

All in all, Death Stranding is fully deserving of all of its game of the year awards. In many ways, it deserves better of players. Few games bust through genres and even fewer succeed. Consumers like familiar things. They want the same Call of Duty, the same actors in every movie, and the same sounding music. Every now and then, someone like Kohima comes along and gives us something different. Embrace it.

Full disclosure: I played Death Stranding on PS5. The load times were super fast like any game on PS5. Transitioning from safe houses to the open world may have been torture on the PS4. I wouldn’t know.

Death Stranding is creating a new game genre and therefore paves its own path towards more interactive experiences. It is a brave work thanks to its novelty, which fortunately is not a bragging right for its creators, as it may have seemed, but an exceptional title that will reward the brave who play it. This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
