The game itself is a quality Kojima game. Sony did a mistake doing so much marketing around it, which attracted too many people with over the top expectations. It supposed to be a game about rope rather then a stick, and it is a game about rope and connections. It has some really good mechanics around it, you just don't have to shoot people.
The map, music and atmosphere ideally shows

The map, music and atmosphere ideally shows what happened after the ingame events. Leaving all people disconnected in the empty world of Timefall, which keeps destroying everything you build at a faster pace. You go through the snowy mountains all alone by yourself, yet sometimes you receive a helping hand from other players.
The story is a typical good Kojima story, with ending followed by another ending and follow by additional ending again, and you don't expect any events to end up the cliche way, and Kojima constantly makes fun of the cliche ways itself, even at main protagonist fight.

No contexto geral o jogo é excelente. Expand

The mechanics are striking for these first few hours as you will find the simple task of walking from one place to another laborious and seemingly without purpose. You will find yourself overwhelmed with the many in game systems and overly complex UI. The game, although understandingly having to explain a new IP, goes about introducing this new world in the worst possible way, by telling you with endless cut scenes and dialogue. The opening experience was so harsh i found no hope in the idea of completing this game. Those that are able to find the courage to push through, will be rewarded with one of the best games of the generation. Most everything beyond that point becomes clear and meaningful. Beyond that 5-10 hour mark, the game play becomes satisfyingly addictive corollary to the increased complexity as you introduce more gizmos, vehicles and weapons. The true purpose of that harsh opening becomes clear, serving as the benchmark to gauge how far you have come through your characters progression. The story is unique and introduces fantastic philosophical concepts, driving your purpose to completion. The voice acting and motion capture acting are unmatched, aside from maybe The Last of Us. The graphics, both in game and cut scenes, are as good as any this generation. The sound design pulls you into the world with natures sweeping ambiance. Moments go from serene, to horrific intensity and occasionally peak with musical relief when a landmark comes into view. The boss fights are wildly iconic and are sure to leave a lasting impact. Hideo Kojima's tone is thickly layered into every aspect giving this his signature staples of oddly enjoyable nuances. The social aspect is not the revolution it was made out to be, but does a serviceable job in making you feel like you are part of a connected world. This is truly a unique experience that goes beyond and maximizes what the video game format has traditionally offered over other story telling and idea conveying mediums. I nearly gave up on this game, i'm glad i did not. Expand

It has a very satisfying game play loop, a great story that takes place in an intriguing world with a great cast of characters that are all very well thought out with their own goals and motivations. It truly delivers a different experience. Where we are all pitted against each other to get the most kills, this game encourages and rewards you for helping others, whether they are a player navigating their own world or reconnecting everyone throughout the course of the story.

Even though I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of this game I can see where some complaints can ring true. The opening chapters of the game are a little slow because you haven't gotten far enough to unlock most of the games advanced mechanics and going by the trophy statistics that's where most of the negative reviews stem from, which leads me to my final point.

If you're not the type of person that can sit down and complete a game, which statistically is the majority of gamers, this title will fall flat for you. Its a complete experience that really needs to be completed to truly appreciate.

I truly hope that if you read this review and are thinking about purchasing the game that you do so with the intention of giving it your full attention and completing the story. If you can do that, it will be an amazing experience.

Finally a game that isn't run of the mill, its hard for developers to break from standard practices as they often know its a $ risk. While certainly not for everyone. The atmospheric approach in this game to thrust a player into a world that doesn't exist is quite impressive, all the while reminding them how human we are.

Gameplay loop is not for everyone but neither is the movie "the secret life of Walter mitty" which seems to me to be in a similar vein of soft music, Icelandic geography, and emphasis on the journey rather than destinations.

It's an adventure game with pacifist overtones, so if you gotta kill enemies and button mash this isn't for you. The innovative part is the teamwork with other players in single player which drives much of the gameplay satisfaction. Basically this game is a slow burn with a slow start, so I can understand if you wouldn't want to pay full price for a game you won't love in the first night playing. Yet like a 3 hour movie or a 1000 page book, those who stick with it will find loads of content and a payoff in the end to justify the sticker price. I don't like fishing, but those who do appreciate the meditative patience in it that I seem to find myself similarly in Death Stranding hiking a mountain. It's a niche genre but the story is fun so for those on the fence I recommend waiting for PC, as the modding community will really break open more of the magic.

It was said about the Velvet Underground that not many people bought their records, but those who did all started a band. I can see this for Death Stranding; it won't be a blockbuster or GOTY, but it legitimately has clever mechanics and fresh aesthetics that will resonate and possibly inspire the next generation.

I myself did not share these views, since I was not lucky to play any of his games. And on the horizon appeared a mysterious, promising, eye-catching look of everyone, even outside the game community, "Death stranding" ... My expectations? Yes, no, I thought it would be a mediocre game, which has a very cool marketing company. But ... I will not "pickle" - it's great! What I saw in this work of art exceeded all my expectations (from game projects in general)! The game begins in a World that, at first glance, has no hope of salvation, in a World where only you can change something. And starting to do this, you realize that you are not alone. And this is one of the main ideas of this game - you are not alone! By paving the way to salvation, you are helping to do the same to a person thousands of kilometers away from whom you are never destined to meet. There are thousands of these people, and together you are doing one thing, extending life to this world, giving hope, no matter how pathetic it may sound.
As for the game itself, it is beautiful visually! Incredible landscapes accompanied by unearthly musical compositions! The atmosphere of a beautiful abandoned World, drawn so that you believe in it and absolutely fall in love! The script, plot, actors and their game are all just great! Yes, the game goes beyond the usual gameplay for many, and it's great! Playing as Sam, we really go a lot, carrying on ourselves loads for Nodes, which we must unite in a single network. And it sounds really boring and dry ... In fact, the player is faced with a mass of tools designed to diversify and enrich this gameplay. Firstly, the World is not so empty. In addition to the conditionally invisible presence of other players, the World of the game is teeming with otherworldly entities, simply called Creatures in the Russian voice acting. Their presence makes the player plan his next trip - choose the route, weapons necessary in case of an unpleasant meeting. But secondly, the journey around the world itself is very variable. In addition to the load, you are forced to take with you the right amount of tools to overcome the relief. And all this can not be called boring. If you came to this World to plunge into it, and not to gawk. I do not want to describe the game in the usual manner, this creation is more than a game. I would like to thank Kojima for not following the “crowd”, for the enormous work done, for this art! And it’s very unfortunate that this art gets a rating of “0” - “because I expected another, but got walking” ... Do not judge the game by the commercials of the journalists, do not expect from it what you are used to, accept it and you will not regret it !

It's not Saints Row or Watchdogs, so if you're expecting to have fun by running people over and causing mayhem - this is not your game. This is a peaceful game about overcoming hardship and rebuilding a world in a post-apocalyptic environment.

The map is huge and the terrain is very inhospitable and hard to traverse, that's why you're walking... You can use bikes and trucks that can help you get places, but they have their limits in terrain traversing capabilities, just like real bikes and trucks... So your best bet on getting somewhere - is using your own two feet.

I have awesome time playing this game.

The amazing story telling and superb acting, transitions and gives life to some arduous and earnest yet incredibly satisfying gameplay. Gameplay that utilizes (like no game has before) it’s harsh yet stunning environments, which is itself brought to life with perhaps the best looking graphics on a PS4 game to date. The extremes in emotion a player will go through while playing this game will range from peaceful and calm to nervous and tense and everything in between. It always left me wanting to find out what’s gonna happen next. Furthermore, the “Social Strand” system is not only a shining light for the game, but an undoubtedly important message to everyone across the world that, we are in fact, stronger if we work together. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Death Stranding is not without some flaws. It is not a game for everyone, the pacing is not perfect, the combat (what there is of it) feels a bit janky, and some boss battles are a bit underwhelming

    However...

In an age where one game after another are nonsensical copy paste action games with barebones story, terrible low budget cutscenes, microtransactions and completely void of artistic vision, Death Stranding stands out as something fresh and remarkable, while still tugging some nostalgic strings when it nods back to the first Metal Gear Solid games.

It's a game that has grown on me even after finishing it. It demands that you reflect on its story and themes.

The gameplay is fresh, and surprisingly fun and addictive, and its visuals are unmatched.

I was worried Kojima was past his prime after the dissappointing MGSV, but DS shows that he has more stories to tell, and what a story it is...

DS is a game that should not be missed, as it stands as one of few games in modern times that tries to push the medium forwards. And it succeeds.

You have to get to at least episode 3-4 because at that point, a ton more stuff opens up that you can build and use to help when you are traveling...and it is worth it.

It makes it so much more fun. The act and game play loop of connecting the strands of the country becomes addicting and so much fun. The multiplayer system is awesome. I'm obsessed with getting "likes" and it's super addicting. It's just seamlessly integrated where it never gets in the way of your game play so for those that don't like multiplayer, don't worry. It actually completely enhances the game to the point where there is no way you should play offline. Things like getting "likes" from other players for signs you put down, roads you build, storage units you make, watch towers and generators you put up, is SO satisfying. It makes you just want to keep doing it. Those "likes" aren't meaningless either. They add to your bridge links to the facilities and also increases your porter rating which adds to your influence on other players and how other players are affected by you.

I found I actually want to engage in the world rather then push the story forward. The Strand System is astonishing and the dynamic nature of it is quite staggering. I think the game pacing is very much like a gearbox, as the game progresses you move up the gears until its going full throttle. There is much to do here though, and in middle game it can almost be overwhelming at times. Its not perfect, and there certain things which can be frustrating. The balancing of the main character over terrains is troublesome until you get the knack of it, Certain modes of transport don't do well on some terrains and you can make deliveries that don't seem to accrue you any meaningful progress however none of these are major points and in a game of this scale I am honestly surprised there aren't more. I can see people playing this in several different ways which is a testament to the game. Even if it was only for the story, or even if it was only for the sheer marvel of the vistas there are many individual reasons to play Death Stranding. Its one of the most engrossing and different games I have ever played and I absolutely love it. Expand

With the processing of the game, transportation facilities will be unlocked and this game could finally be enjoyed. The most fascinating part is the help from other players which makes the process of the game never lonely again. However, somehow it is still not enough given the frame of open world gameplay. But I think the theme "connection" has been well pointed out by the performances of the actors, scenes, music and even the "poor" gameplay as well. Maybe Death Stranding is the only game I could truely feel "warm". From this point of view, it is still a good game. Expand

Kojima is known for making great boss battles so that has been disappointing. But the combat isnt bad by any means, it just needs more "spice." I'm not interested in the Kojima fanboy hype, the marketing onslaught or the blanket detractors. At the end of the day, games need to stand on their own merit. Art direction is, not surprisingly, gorgeous, and the score is predictably immersive and emotive. While the story arc is intriguing, the writing itself seems stale in places and lost my interest over time. The cutscenes, well, it's Kojima so yes, there are more cutscenes than can be counted. I do appreciate the potential of cutscenes to further the story, but for me, they don't compliment the game as much as they compete with it. The rhythm of the gameplay simply doesn't match the rhythm of the scenes and I feel like they interrupt my experience more than enhance it. The core game mechanics seem to be the single biggest gripe to casual passerby, and though it does often feel like a glorified walking simulator, I do enjoy the slow pace and exploration factor. All in all, I think far too many of us are using the pre-launch hype as a measuring stick, but in and of itself, I found DS to be a fairly solid gaming experience. Not a strikeout or a homerun, but maybe a stand-up double. Expand

Of the 9 hours I put in, I'd wager 6 of them were watching mundane cut scenes, none of which made any real sense, just seemed like someone that thinks they're intellectual spewing words onto paper and thinking it's somehow cinematic. I've given it 3 stars purely for the graphics as they're incredible in places, the motion capture is good, as are the voiceovers, but they are from well known actors so that's to be expected. I honestly, hand on heart believe if this game had come from an unknown developer, it'd have struggled to get 5/10s from most outlets. If you get any enjoyment out of this game, good for you, to me though it's drivel. Pretentious, self serving dross. After all these years, it's finally apparent why Konami actually kept reigns on Kojima when he was working on the MGS games. This game is proof of what happens when you let the man do what he wants without any interference and I'm sure Konami won't lose any sleep they're not attached to this dumpster fire in any capacity. I'm writing this review as a rabid Kojima fan, so take this into account.

Death Stranding's apparent promise to the new player can be written thusly; "This is a game that is about to introduce you to about a half dozen characters. Some of them may share a history with you, some of them may even be related to you, some of them will inexplicably wear masks and give your orders. Who they are and what they are to you exactly you may find out much later (or not). But first, you have to save America, so deliver these boxes. Oh, also, the underworld is trying to push you over and make you lose your boxes and if you do, well then you're going to be chasing them down a river or on the side of a mountain. We'll give you stuff to make moving boxes around easier, but that's later. First, we're going to make you deliver things by foot like an idiot."

I'm into around 20 hours of the game, and that pretty much sums up my experience with Death Stranding. I was careful to not write an opinion on this game until I had enough hours put in as Kojima games can take a little time to get going, but he tends to start off at a warm temperature and by the end of the game things get nuclear. That's typically his style, so a player is usually not going to have trouble signing up for one of his journeys. But Death Stranding is no thrill ride. Even the dangerous stuff isn't all that dangerous and in the absence of motivation, I'm having difficulty justifying the time spent to endure Kojima's latest work.

It's a marvel to look at, but I'll get to the point; there's no excuse to make 30 fps games any more. I've been critical of other titles like Assassin's Creed: Odyssey and Horizon: Zero Dawn for running at that framerate and when this title comes out next year on PC, likely running at a blazing 60 fps and above (as is typically the case in the PC world), I suspect that we all may feel kind of silly about playing games in this manner. The only title I would give a pass for 30 fps would be Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which is a masterpiece that should be shown at The Louvre. BoTW is a work of art that changed the world. No other game gets this pass, certainly not Death Stranding.

Kojima gets some points in the form of technical achievement, but when you're attempting to immerse the player in a game that can last 50 hours or more, you're not being profound by withholding details about characters, settings, and context when you need these elements to establish an emotional connection to the player. If the game doesn't build its case for the player to continue on a journey within 5 minutes of pressing start, the experience will feel hollow. It saddens me to think that when I compare this to anything else Kojima has done, it does not stand shoulder to shoulder with any other title from his body of work. An unpleasant surprise.

Definitely a masterpiece of art, technique and vision brought by the legendary Hideo Kojima, where the union’s beauty between image and sound (thanks to a direction like an Hollywoodian film) brings contrasting sensations: from the vision’s beauty of a breathtaking landscape to the great tension when you are face to face to BT’s.
Not to mention the great actors interpretation, who brings even more quality and depth to the opera.
Unfortunately this kind of videogame isn’t for everyone. To those are looking for the usual "standard" open-world title where a weapon is always at hand, don’t play this game.
This title takes as its protagonist the “journey”, at the borders of time and reality, in an America devastated by a catastrofic event, all implemented in a masterly way and demonstrating courage and genius in a gameplay that few people will understand and appreciate.
I just want personally thank and congrats to Hideo-san for making me excited once again.
I hope you will be able to appreciate this unforgettable journey!

Not even 24hrs after buying it, I will be trading it in. What a boring, overhyped mess of a game, you really don't feel any sense of being rewarded throughout play apart from being gifted cut-scenes. The gameplay and story are both extremely tedious and nonsensical, and overall extremely boring and repetitive.

This game is absolutely brilliant. The fact the gameplay is based around delivering parcels is actually a welcome change than going from area to area shooting/killing people like in most games. The graphics/music/story/mechanics are all 10/10.

    史诗级的游戏,开创了一个新的游戏类型,小岛秀夫只用80人团队,3年就做出这种水平的游戏可以说是业界奇迹,IGN给6.8分可以说是公报私仇的典型范例了吧。

A masterpiece in the beginning it can be overwhelming with the amounts of mechanics the game offers. But after episode 3 the game opens up showing its wonders. In a era of copy paste and empty experience a game like Death stranding it's the change. And I'm glad I tried it.

Great game, it's definitely not for everyone but history hooks you as soon as the opening credits kick in accompanied by powerful kinematics! The controls/commands may feel complex at first, but as you progress and meet certain hours of play you get familiar with each of the elements in this modern post apocalyptic game. Make sure to give it a try since it feels very different from other games!

There's a lot of different views and criticisms being thrown around by a lot of people that didn't play past chapter 2 or 3, so many people that didn't spend the 35-40 hours minimum it takes to really get any kind of grasp on this game and to finish the main campaign. I played for 78 hours, I delivered countless packages, medicine, supplies, and equipment to help people and even to help someone have a child that is in an area a doctor never could have reached, so the doctor operated remotely via equipment and the network we built. I've read all the emails I could, I've read all the interviews I could. I'm pretty sure I understand everything in the game completely and wholly.

If a review says something about Death Stranding having a convoluted story or that it doesn't make sense, I promise you they didn't finish the game. And/or they didn't bother reading or listening to anything. This game is easily one of the best pieces of art and story every told in gaming history. In total I played 78 hours, I doubt there was more than 10-12 hours of cut-scene footage throughout the entire game in total, so at most the game was 15% cut-scene for me. Even if you breeze through just the main story, you're looking at roughly 40 hours of playtime and still only 20-25% cut-scenes. It's a lot, but this is a Kojima game where he's trying to tell a beautiful story with a very intricate narrative that will almost certainly surprise you as you piece things together in the end (it definitely does.)

Some negative reviews talk about the actors and that it's just a movie with no game-play, they're wrong. It's an experience, something more than a game. The level of cinematography with the mo-cap and the real actors gives such a genuine feel to the game and makes you truly invested and care about the characters that only something like Last of Us comes close to in caring for the characters by the end of the game. This is nothing like any game you've ever played. This game is about creating connections, rebuilding a broken world, figuring out why the world is broken, and discovering a past, present, and future that really doesn't come together until a beautiful end that ties all the knots together.

The cast of characters in this game is absolutely insane! I've seen people criticizing the game for their portrayal of female characters. The female characters are some of the best performances and the strongest characters in the entire game. The raw emotion that the actors gave for this game is award worthy (check out the behind the scenes mo-cap.). This game is bound to win countless awards for 2019 for performance, visual achievement, soundtrack, and for breaking the mode. This is what the gaming world needed and some people just aren't ready for it. A lot of players like they're re-skinned games 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. But it's literally more of the same and while that makes a lot of players happy, it doesn't really give us anything new to learn or grasp or to cause us to grow. This game makes you think about the future, yourself, what you're doing, what you're not doing.

The game-play is fairly simple, you are delivering medicine, supplies, building materials to a dying world and building connections to build a network to save the world. In connecting the world together, and the people together you hope to find a way to stop the Death Stranding. Throughout your journey you build structures to help you on your journey back and forth thru areas connecting people together. Other structures from other real players that you're connected to start to bleed through and help you set up a network for success without having to use your bandwidth for building in your world. The more connections you make throughout the game and the more strands you create with other players, the easier your journey will be.

Everything in the end culminates into the greatest gaming performance ever made to date, one that will probably change the face of many games to come. It truly sets a precedent for what we deserve from creators as far as effort and having MEANING! There's so much undertone about society and how distant we've all become. If you go from country to country everything is SO different. We're becoming more and more distant from one another, we need to reconnect. This game won't make that happen, but it will make some people think.

This is Game of the Year, best performance, soundtrack, visuals, story and more. I play almost every big title and some small ones, and this game really made me feel. I am a fan of Kojima and his work, and this is probably the best of his work to date. Absolutely incredible.

If you took the time to read this review and haven't played the game, I implore you to pick it up, wait for a sale if you have to. But play it yourself, don't miss out on one of the greatest achievements in gaming ever.

    Thank you,
    John

Death Stranding is creating a new game genre and therefore paves its own path towards more interactive experiences. It is a brave work thanks to its novelty, which fortunately is not a bragging right for its creators, as it may have seemed, but an exceptional title that will reward the brave who play it. This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
