I have found the ‘flame-war’ between those that love Death Stranding and those that don’t pretty illuminating about today’s society, particularly attention spans. Of all the ‘haters’, almost all have done little more than dabble with Kojima’s opus... some haven’t even played it! To be fair, there are some who have played through it and still didn’t enjoy it but that is true in all entertainment. For instance, my missus hates Breaking Bad... one of the best examples of television entertainment of all time and there are some people out there who have struggled through the debatably slow first season and still don’t enjoy it. Most of Breaking Bad’s detractors don’t get past episode 3 though and I’d imagine that it is a similar scenario with Death Stranding and it’s detractors.

I’m 50 hours in and am enjoying it immensely. I have struggled to convey ‘why’ it is enjoyable to my friends and colleagues though, as they can not seem to get past the (extremely) basic premise that it’s just a fetch-quest walking simulator. Well Breaking Bad is ‘basically’ just a story about a teacher who gets cancer... but anyone who has watched Breaking Bad will know it is far more than that. And so it goes with Death Stranding.

If you have played The Last of Us and gotten to the famous Giraffe moment, you’ll know how powerful a moment within gaming can be that doesn’t actually involves any particular gaming technique of the player. You basically just guide your player through a door using the left analogue stick with no inherent danger or drama... but after a notorious slog through dark and infested corridors and rooms you are eventually greeted with an example of beauty. I think about this moment a lot when playing Death Stranding. Kojima has managed to include a fair few moments here that illicit similar emotional punches (all directed beautifully so it ‘feels’ like a moment only you would have stumbled upon). death Stranding then goes one better than the Giraffe-moment of The Last of Us by offering so much versatility in how you tackle the same journey/slog moving forwards. The game teaches you how hard a journey can be the first time you make it and then the next time you need to travel in that direction it presents you with a variety of tools to use to make what was once a 3 hour slog of endurance a 2 minute breeze... and the personal satisfaction you gain from creating your own solution is surprisingly real.

On top of the above, the game is visually stunning! Up there with, if not succeeding God of War as the best-looking game I have played. The sound track is up there with, if not succeeding Nier: Automata as the best sounding game I have played. The ‘social’ network is more than a novel spin on Dark Souls messaging service... I have lost count of the times another player has helped me in my journey and I like to think I have done the same (my ‘likes’ counter suggests that I have... which is also incredibly gratifying). The story, presentation, acting etc is all top-drawer.

If you are a fan of gaming as a medium of presenting entertainment (rather than gaming to kill 15 minutes) you will be doing yourself a disservice to listen to the naysayers out there about Death Stranding. It has to be experienced and given time to breath to fully appreciate and if you do so I’d imagine it will be worth most ‘gamers’ time.

The first night after playing it, I had no choice but rant to a friend for the better part of an hour in trying to understand just how I had actually received it. I'll start with the positives. While the game isn't for everybody, it's not necessarily only for those of any profound "artistic sensitivity", to semi-quote a rather tasteless comment Kojima made in denigration to Americans and our supposed lack thereof. It is rather, I believe, more geared towards those who might enjoy a game like Harvest Moon, Stardew Valley, or maybe Truck Simulator. Along those lines. While much of the gameplay is rather mundane, I have actually taken great satisfaction in just navigating the landscape and managing my supplies. The whole "strand" thing has been neat too; it's fun to see others building things around and with you, and it's neat to know others are there, even if only in a kind of ethereal way. The game is generally beautiful, and a lot of the aesthetic is pretty cool, though some does come across as pointless and "artsy" to the point of maybe trying a bit too hard, a la Fragile's umbrella. In any case, there is a lot to appreciate here, but once again, the actual game part of the game seems more niche than would probably be ideal for a blockbuster game. It shouldn't be blamed for that, however. I'm genuinely happy to see something so bold executed at such a high level of production. Even if the game were to be a total failure, it would still be a cultural touchstone, more or less.
Now for the bad. The script. My God, the script is overwrought, self-indulgent, forced, and has made me cringe to the point I've thought of just hanging up my controller. Don't get me wrong, I generally love weird, obtuse things in general, often strangeness for its own sake, but much of this just feels contrived. The metaphors are almost not even metaphors for want of subtlety, and much of what might be profound in the game is obscured by what I can only describe as "off". It feels like a case of something trying to appear profound by means of obfuscation rather than any real meaning, and this coming from a huge fan of John Ashbery's poetry. I can digest weirdness well enough, but when it is clobbered up with things that are, to me, tastelessly stupid, I have a hard time. Take, for example, the name of one of the NPCs, "Die-Hardman". I can't get over how awkward and try-hard this feels to me. This kind of off-kilter, B-movie stuff might work in Metal Gear games, but this game takes itself far too seriously to pull it off, and it often comes across as just plain bad. This is all subjective, of course, but I am not into it. At all. Throw in some mind-bendingly out of place product placement, and now I'm just confused. It doesn't seem like the vision of an auteur as much as it feels like somebody trying to impress all his arthouse friends with a kind of manufactured esotericism. If it were only a movie, I'd just feel sick for having watched it. Most fortunately, the cutscenes can be skipped. I should say though, that the premise isn't entirely terrible. There are some really neat things that have been done in the game, and some of the concepts are generally pretty interesting. I personally think the intertwining of the worlds of the dead and the living and some of how that ties into the technology is actually pretty awesome. My problem is with the implementation, plain and simple. Altogether, I like the game. It has made me think, and the actual gameplay scratches a particular itch I have as a gamer. However, the game isn't for everybody, and the story framing it is for far, far fewer. Certainly for Kojima himself. It is beautiful, it is strange, it is provocative, but it is not well-written, it is not subtle, and its themes don't go any deeper than any like-minded platitude. There are beautiful moments in the game, moments that might actually border on the profound, if only it didn't get in its own way.

But yes, it's not a 10 either. This game suffered from overhype a little bit too much. It is a finished project with unique takes(!) on gaming experience and gameplay. Can't say it is a new genre, but experimentation and the willingness to try something new in the stale mess of the game industry of today is extremely important. And yes, it was super fun.

    The graphics are amazing,
    The sound design is outstanding,
What many people find boring other people (me included) find extremely engaging and exciting. But the gameplay still lacks variety, especially when comparing with other greatly anticipated games of the past years.

Again, I wasn't bored for a single minute in those 60+ hours I have in the game.

For me, it is a solid 8. Saddens me to see the game being tanked with 0s so much but it's okay. To each their own, especially with a game as different as Death Stranding.

This game is one of the few games in my life that sucks me in in such a way that I cannot get it out of my mind no matter how hard I try. I absolutely loved the story and the gameplay is brilliant once you understand how it all works and why it’s designed the way it is. In the first several hours you’re merely a courier delivering cargo and trying to connect outposts and build a new network of knowledge and data across a post-apocalyptic America. As you progress from east to west and the network’s wealth of knowledge and data grows larger you begin to connect with other porter’s built structures and the story really fills out. I love how the game starts you off with a whole bunch of disadvantages but once you accomplish a new connection you unlock the area’s structures made by other players, which is one of the coolest multiplayer ideas I’ve seen. You’re forced through the grind with no structures, and no guidance for how to get to the destination, and your rewarded with a right of passage and progress in the story, which really ups the sense of accomplishment and makes you feel almost compelled to hold off on progress for a few hours to work on roads and zip line networks to make the travel more convenient for you and for your fellow players to access when they unlock the new connection. The story is 100% Kojima, and I would argue his best story to date, albeit probably his longest as well. It definitely helps to have amazing acting by everyone in the cast and among the best looking visuals you can find today in games, all of it does a great job at really immersing you in the world, and emotionally connecting you to every twist and turn the game throws at you, and there are a BUNCH of out of left field turns that the game takes, which make very little sense at first, but really come together in the end. As is tradition once you finish the final antagonist encounter in the game you’re met with over 3 hours of interactive cut scenes but they help to tie up all the loose ends. I admit that there are some sections in the end that really drag on for a lot longer than they have to - and strangely the main part in mind is an interactive part - but all the same it all draws toward a very fulfilling conclusion..

Would I recommend this game to everyone? Hell no - but not because it wasn’t amazing, simply because it takes a certain type of patience to allow yourself to grind your way through the initial few hours before things really kick off, and some of the longer subsequent periods where you need to spend time travelling long distances with minimal activity at times, but your experience is dictated by the player. You can choose to avoid (many) encounters whether with BTs, Mules, and even some of the mini-bosses, or you can face them all head on and fill the game with thrilling encounters, and that’s one of the things I really love about it, but is an acquired taste for sure. I played for nearly 80 hours before completing the story but nearly half of that time was staying back and building structures for other players and for myself to have an easier go at the traveling parts, which made side missions more tempting to do and it was easy to get lost in it, but it’s not that essential, it just makes the later parts (especially really close to the end) a whole lot easier and more rewarding. I absolutely loved this game and since there are things to do when the game is over I’ll probably continue to expand the infrastructure and finish off more of the side missions from time to time. If your looking for a game with a compelling story, a combination of peaceful exploration to high Adrenalin battle encounters (some of which that can REALLY surprise you), and if you have the patience to put yourself through a bit of hell to get through it, then it’s an absolute must-play.

The fact that several thousand "users" showed up with their 0's and 10's on the same day the game released is a sign Metacritic needs to move over to a verified system. Here's my no spoiler review.

Graphics (9): One of the best looking games I've seen (rivals RDR2). I played on a Pro and experienced no frame rate issues (locked at 30). There is some pop in but it's very minimal considering the draw distances. Once or twice textures didn't load in right away. I didn't try HDR.

Controls (8): The game has fantastic controls through the menus and traversal. The button mapping is intuitive. It controls similar to RDR2 with a weighty feel but with more contextual traversal animations that can't be canceled (i.e. stumbling). The combat controls are a little too sluggish.

Sound/Music (10): Some of the best music I've heard in a game. Most songs are original scores. The songs are often dropped in at perfect moments to elevate the moment. The overall sound and sound effects are very well done and thorough.

Story (9): When the game sticks to the more grounded material it is truly a work of art, but some of the more metaphysical elements are needlessly obtuse and long. But the build up and pacing is masterfully done. There are several significant plot twists. The cinematics are some of the best I've seen in a game. The main characters are very well written and voice acted with the one exception of the main villain, who is poorly developed and lacks believable motivations. A few side characters had cringe voice performances but most were good.

Gameplay (9): This generally consists of embarking on numerous mini journeys (America's east to west coast). These journeys consist of: gather info>preparation>navigation>traversal>destination. This is a much more methodical and slower gameplay loop with only occasional action sequences. The challenge derives from proper planning and traversing treacherous terrain. The reward (fun factor) is much more psychological, where the stimulation of a "journey loop" will register with some personalities and not with others.

It uses a complex physics system to make traversal fun and engaging. Momentum, center of balance, and weight all affect how your character interacts with the world. The reason why traversal is so interesting in this game is because a delivery is rarely just a matter of walking from point A to point B; instead, you will be forced to balance and navigate a large myriad of systems and obstacles in order to complete your missions. Small rocks can trip you, rivers can sweep you away, and ledges can prove fatal. Keeping Sam upright as you traverse this deadly world is engaging exactly because of these obstacles and the difficulty involved with navigating them successfully. In addition to this core gameplay, you will be able to construct structures, ladders, and ropes which adds an extra layer of fun to the game. The building mechanic allows you to creatively solve challenges like ascending a large mountain or crossing a deep, rapid river. Each mission is more or less the same; however, each mission presents different challenges that you must over come with the tools available to you. You could descend a mountain by creating a series of ziplines with other players, you could simply use a system of ropes and ladders, or you could let a stream sweep you all the way down which is fast but dangerous. On top of the core mechanics related to traversal, you will also have to use stealth and combat to overcome an interesting variety of enemies including MULES(humans) and BTs(ghosts). Both of these enemy types will offer you the chance to test out a large variety of tools, guns, and gadgets. In addition to all of this, there are 8 unique boss fights that will blow you away with their presentation, design, and the original gameplay associated with some of them. On top of the core game, there is a fascinating world and story that will keep you interested from beginning to end despite some clunky dialogue and exposition. Ultimately, Death Stranding is clearly not a game for everyone but don't let critics convince you that it isn't supposed to be fun. For half of those who play the game, it will be addicting and immersive; for the other half, it will be tedious and bewildering. You should rent the game to see which one of those camps you fall into. Regardless, Death Stranding serves as proof of why Sony has won this console generation. They will put in the time and money to let creators create the games that they would like to play, even if those games might not always be financially successful. Like a great movie studio, they use their resources and platform to let artist flourish with almost complete freedom and the result is an astonishing collection of unique exclusives. Uncharted 4, God of War, Last Guardian, Bloodborne, SpiderMan, and Death Stranding are all examples of exciting, emotional, and wholly distinctive pieces of their creators that only exist because SONY understands that curating true art is the best pathway to establishing a successful console.

Most games have low level enemies to deal with, this game has the terrain as the common enemy, and you feel a sense of pride as you overcome it and change the landscape. In each area you are tasked with getting to your destination in your own way with no help, but upon doing so you link up to the "Chiral Network", allowing you access to usually a dozen or so of other players structures / items / signs in that area. This is always such a sense of relief, and you go on to add to these yourself or upgrade them, sharing the love. On the downside, in my opinion the story is a nonsensical mess, and the delivery of key plot points is mishandled. On top of this, some bosses or set pieces seem extremely out of place and don't have the same care and interesting mechanics as the rest of the game, and could simply not be there to be honest. But you can really just ignore that and focus on what you're doing for 99% of the game, which is facing the world find a refreshing kind of game, free from many video game conventions. You cant give a zero just because you personally hate Kojima, or have only watched a few youtube videos of just someone walking up a hill and think all the game is like that. Admittedly the starting 2 chapters are a slow burn but it then opens up in to so much more, trikes, trucks, zip wires, highways. Its even fun setting up networks to get around quicker. Using other players built items and sharing is such a simple but great feature.

It fu cks me off when people constantly say its a walking sim, or Fedex simulator. Those people are just ignorant and lack the intelligence to be funny. I think you need to be late teens and older to understand/appreciate this game. It is not for people with short attention spans. The story starts with you thinking, wtf is going on. but as the game progresses, and you read emails/interviews and see the cutscenes, you begin to grasp whats going on in the world. The last few chapters of the game make everything clear and to be honest has the best ending of any game I've ever experienced. It really was sad when it was all over. However, I am still playing post game, and now +100 hours in, as I platinum games, and still enjoying the mechanics of the game to get the last trophies.

And this is the big hurdle I think for a lot of people, you have to stick with the game to get the most out of it. Get past those first 5 / 10 hours and you will see, you cannot not get this based on what others say, you have to experience this game for yourself. It is so unique and different to anything else I've played.

I used vehicles anytime the game let me, and its honestly the only reason I was able to finish it. The vehicle controls are awful by the way, and the vehicle physics are very wonky. You are constantly getting stuck on everything since the entire world is covered by rocks that you should be able to drive over, but cant. I found myself tiring of the gameplay quickly and only did the main missions, using vehicles to complete them as easily as possible, which worked. There is far too much useless dialogue and small cutscenes, and after a few hours I was skipping everything that was not a main cutscene. The story and main cutscenes are fun, but its pretty dumb overall, and some parts of the game left my mouth agape as I tried to comprehend the stupidity of what I was watching. There are good parts of the story I actually liked, but the game takes far too long actually getting to the good stuff, and ends up info dumping you in cutscenes toward the end. Combat in the game is nothing special and you have pretty much no reason to even waste your time with it. The bosses are all bullet sponges with nothing interesting changing up the fight, I got tired of them and turned the difficulty down to kill them quickly. I thought the boss designs were pretty cool though. I feel as though this game failed to deliver(no pun intended) whatever experience or message it was trying to convey. I just found myself trying to blast through the game in the quickest way possible, ignoring any side activities because I was too annoyed and didnt really care. I give it a 6/10. A game that could have been much more fun, and a story that feels totally up its own butt at times. If the game goes on sale for cheap, grab it as its a somewhat unique experience, but not what I would call a good one. Expand

The story is my favourite that has been told by a video game this generation (the last of us clearly being last generations) and once it eventually gets going it is simply a masterclass in storytelling. It has one of the best ending to a video game on years. The only thing holding me back from giving Death Stranding a 10 is the clunky combat mechanics and the fact that it does ask the player to be very patient in order to allow the game to get going, but it is worth it. The segments with BTs are tense and its genuinely scary when you mess up and one starts following you around. No, you probably wont sir in this game. But the punishment for death is huge. The real punishment of messing up anyway, is not your health reaching 0, it's your cargo getting damaged, or you having to go back to pick up cargo that got dropped in whatever accident you had. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game has balls. As someone who grew up never playing Metal Gear this is my first Kojima game and overall a good gaming experience.

    The Pro's:

The game loop is addicting. If you like world building games or open world adventure games this might be for you. After spending 100 plus hours getting platinum the gameplay is what keep me going. The game is polished right out of the case. A rare case in today's triple AAA market.

    The Cons:

The story is bad, just bad. It's too on the nose for me. The characters writing is not good. Fragile is one of the worst written characters i've come across. You could have cut Higgs right out of the game and still have came to the same ending. He is one of the better written character too.

Despite the meaning, the Amelie story thread was not what I wanted. I felt the that connecting the UCA was secondary for Sam as he was chasing after Amelie. So yes I was looking for your 'classic chase story' in which Sam chases after his sister to connect.

    Overall:

A good and unique gaming experience in today's bland gaming space. I will never play the Metal Gear Series but look forward to his next project. Would recommend to all as a gaming experience and to some as a game. The highs are high and the lows are low; 7 out of 10 is about right for this game.

What has impressed me most about this game is the semi-multiplayer world-building. You don’t see other gamers but you see their structures built. One day you have to walk all the way and go through mountains and rivers between two places, the next day you see other players have built the highway two-third of the distance between those places. Then, you decide to finish the rest of the highway, and then you see other people’s reactions by receiving their likes for your structures. This gives you a kind of satisfaction. Beginning is more like an Interactive Cinematic Experience than a traditional game. Story development is riveting and engaging. Actor’s performances shine. Later on, the game begins to resemble a more familiar experience, but is still very enjoyable. Looking forward to more from Kohima Productions!

It is an extremely well made game in every regard and personally probably my favorite Kojima game (Yes I have played all Metal Gear games) There is one big flaw in the game though and that is that there are some invisible walls that really kills some of the exploration sense. I would like to climb every mountain I see in the game and not have some message tell me that I am outside the building area or the character getting stopped by an invisible wall.

Saying that, some players will enjoy that sort of 'hardship' making it feel more tactile whilst wandering through an incredibly well rendered world. Ultimately though, this is really a very niche game (probably great if you fall under that niche gamer category). The idea and lore created would have made for a great film, but doesn't translate well into a game where it feels like it was shoehorned in. Expand

I don't believe anyone who has finished the game will rate this anything below a 5 and if you write something positive about this game your review is automatically unhelpful. If you're someone who aren't willing to play a game for more than 5 hours than please don't buy Death Stranding as you'll either ruin it with negative reviews or clearly not patient enough for a game like this. II don't believe anyone who has finished the game will rate this anything below a 5 and if you write something positive about this game your review is automatically unhelpful. If you're someone who aren't willing to play a game for more than 5 hours than please don't buy Death Stranding as you'll either ruin it with negative reviews or clearly not patient enough for a game like this. I can't stress this point enough, since none of the negative reviews mention the storyline then clearly they never made it past the first few hours so its not that unusual for them to be so confused/lost about the game as its the same as stopping Game of Thrones after episode 1 and wrote **** about the whole show...

    Pros:
Addressing the Critics first, this game should be viewed in 2 aspects and completely separately, the "Cutscenes" which is basically a brilliant made TV show/Film and should only be viewed this way and not as boring and unnecessary bits that causes the player not to "play the game". The storyline itself is incredible unique and Kojima has done an incredible good job in creating a sci-fi world that has never been seen before combining the concepts of Life and Death in a way that has never been explored before in the world of gaming. The actors does an excellent job with portraying the storyline although the cheesy lines can make some scenes really cringy to watch.

The other aspect is the "Gameplay", where in this game it turns into a supporting aspect of the cut scenes as opposed to the other way round with most games. A lot of people mention this as a "walking/delivery simulator" and while this is true to some extent, people who has this view refuse to look beyond what the game is about. Kojima goes above and try to creates a game that highlights the importance of helping other people out or "connecting" (literally the whole premise of the game). You're awarded likes for creating useful structures in aiding other players and I spent a good chunk of my time actually either building roads or structures to help the players that might potentially use them. It takes the "selfshness" out of gaming and puts in a more selfless kind of game play which i don't think anyone is used to hence the negative feedback. Not to mention the enemies (BT's/Mules) adds an element of difficult and stressfulness to the game play which helps to spice up the gameplay. Plus the people who complained about "inventory management" are retarded, there is literally a button that does it for you automatically.... I think what the critics are getting it confused about is "planning" your actions i.e what items to bring along with you and what is feasible. Again since it's not traditionally seen in games to "plan" what you are doing, it's probably why it got so much hate.

    Cons:
This game isn't perfect and there are a few really annoying things in the game that put me off.

I understand the need for world building, but it is a really slow start (about 2 hours of cutscenes when you first start the game) which i guess is what caused all the negative critics as no one is willing to make it past it. But once past the slow start it does make for a incredibly fun game later on (past chapter 3).

One of my major annoyances of this game is the credits. I think i watched the credits 5 times throughout this game and its completely unskippable. I understand the need to see who worked on this game but when it is literally the actors name and Kojima's name popping up 4 times with only 1 full length credit scene it seems way to excessive and unnecessary. It's like Kojima wants to reinforce the fact that HE made the game constantly... Credits should only be viewed once, MAX twice.

Difficulty. You literally cannot lose in this game if you have enough blood bags, which is a bit annoying since you then end up fighting really recklessly if you don't have any important cargo. Considering how well you're supposed to plan for the trips the combat doesn't make up for it. But BT's are still fun to dodge.

It can get a bit too repetitive, but what open world game isn't repetitive? The storyline definitely makes up for this.

    Conclusion:
This game isn't for everyone. But none of the critics ever mention how great the storyline which shows that none of them ever finished it or ever gave it a proper chance which the story itself is a solid 10/10. The gameplay is quite different to traditional games where there is as much of a focus to help other people as well as do things for yourself. I guess people aren't used to helping out other people or maybe never considered it to be fun to actually be a good person and help other actual real life people.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Divisive? Yes. Fantastical? Yes. Mundane? At its' Best. Make no mistake about it, Death Stranding offers a satisfaction not offered by other games.

-Have you ever considered how Mario must feel bouncing place to place only to find out his Princess is in another Castle?

-Have you ever considered Pac-Man's personal thoughts in regards to infinitely running in a maze and depending on dots to keep him safe from ghosts?

-Have you ever watched someone else play a game and just wish there was some way you could shed some light, a tool, or a tip to help them overcome something you had trouble with?

Death Stranding does all of this with incredible graphics and enticingly gripping Gameplay that goes as deep as you would like it too. Do you really want to walk everywhere? Feel free- you can build roads. zipline networks. vehicles. powered exo skeletons for speed, weight, terrain, and a plethora of crazy and familiar weapons if you want to go on a knock-out OR killing spree. Sure, the game is way harder if you decide to kill people- but if you want it, it's there.

People saying this game is just walking? Fooled me- I'm starting my second playthrough and here's what I got: Death Stranding is a game about Deliveries, a game with a great combat system, a game with an intuitive movement system, a game with monster hunter style boss fights, stealth sections, and player collaboration. Want to Hoverboard down a mountain? Go for it. Want to setup a Snowboard course? Go for it. Want a really good movie? Set it on Very Easy. Want a gripping gaming experience? Set it to Hard.

Death Stranding is a lot of things- A Walking Simulator it is not. Out of the 183 hours I've played, I've maybe spent 6 of them walking and 157 hours raiding with riot guns and sleeping gas nade launchers, hauling bodies, hunting phantasmal beasts and stocking other players with super fun toys.

Death Stranding is creating a new game genre and therefore paves its own path towards more interactive experiences. It is a brave work thanks to its novelty, which fortunately is not a bragging right for its creators, as it may have seemed, but an exceptional title that will reward the brave who play it. This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
