Le di mas de 10 horas para que el juego se hiciera interesante, lamento decir que nunca cambia en lo más mínimo.
Dificultad nula, juego repetitivo a más no poder, sistema de combate olvidable. Por más que lo quieran defender este juego es malisimo.

The fact that the game actually expects you to slowly walk everywhere with cargo stacked sky high on your back is ridiculous, and disrespectful to your time as a player. I used vehicles anytime the game let me, and its honestly the only reason I was able to finish it. The vehicle controls are awful by the way, and the vehicle physics are very wonky. You are constantly getting stuck on everything since the entire world is covered by rocks that you should be able to drive over, but cant. I found myself tiring of the gameplay quickly and only did the main missions, using vehicles to complete them as easily as possible, which worked. There is far too much useless dialogue and small cutscenes, and after a few hours I was skipping everything that was not a main cutscene. The story and main cutscenes are fun, but its pretty dumb overall, and some parts of the game left my mouth agape as I tried to comprehend the stupidity of what I was watching. There are good parts of the story I actually liked, but the game takes far too long actually getting to the good stuff, and ends up info dumping you in cutscenes toward the end. Combat in the game is nothing special and you have pretty much no reason to even waste your time with it. The bosses are all bullet sponges with nothing interesting changing up the fight, I got tired of them and turned the difficulty down to kill them quickly. I thought the boss designs were pretty cool though. I feel as though this game failed to deliver(no pun intended) whatever experience or message it was trying to convey. I just found myself trying to blast through the game in the quickest way possible, ignoring any side activities because I was too annoyed and didnt really care. I give it a 6/10. A game that could have been much more fun, and a story that feels totally up its own butt at times. If the game goes on sale for cheap, grab it as its a somewhat unique experience, but not what I would call a good one. Expand

The game I believe falls a bit short regarding the story and character appeal of most of the characters. Also rebuilding America, could care less about that, should have made a fictional place. A masterpiece, but the delivery system and lack of action in the gameplay makes it a bit boring and tiring. However the best game on technical issues I've ever had the pleasure of playing and the ending fully compensates for the trajectory.

Kojima's obsession with Hollywood actors has resulted in a pretty yet bland and empty open world devoid of any interesting landmarks or features. The incoherent story desperately wants to convince you that its deeper than it actually is. The shoehorned social elements are hardly new and end up feeling half baked. Konami are an awful company but I'm starting to think they were right about Kojima. Maybe Fukushima really was the true talent that kept Kojima's worst tendencies in check and helped elevate his work. Expand

I really, really, really wanted to love this game, but I cannot. It's so boring I just can't justify wasting my time to push through to get to the story parts. I spend hours trying to help other players out, but it's not worth it. I highly recommend to just skip the side content and do the story deliveries instead.

Dialogue in DS is partly average and sometimes so off you wonder if this was written by a french man and put through google translate and something got lost in the translation.
I wish someone would take the environments and make a fun game with it.
Walking between the same locations multiple times delivering parcels is not fun.
Why is there only one animation for each interaction and you have to watch it. If you drink a Monster(tm) it always plays the same animation this goes for everything adding only to the repetitive game-play.
Who thought crying baby sounds are what a game needs? And the electric bike sounds will make you mute the game.
Why make such a great environment when I just follow a line on the ground.

    TL;DR
There were some really talented people working on this game but it all got degraded by hideous game-play and a general lack of overall direction. For a game so story heavy the story is heavily lacking.

I'm writing this review as a rabid Kojima fan, so take this into account.

Death Stranding's apparent promise to the new player can be written thusly; "This is a game that is about to introduce you to about a half dozen characters. Some of them may share a history with you, some of them may even be related to you, some of them will inexplicably wear masks and give your orders. Who they are and what they are to you exactly you may find out much later (or not). But first, you have to save America, so deliver these boxes. Oh, also, the underworld is trying to push you over and make you lose your boxes and if you do, well then you're going to be chasing them down a river or on the side of a mountain. We'll give you stuff to make moving boxes around easier, but that's later. First, we're going to make you deliver things by foot like an idiot."

I'm into around 20 hours of the game, and that pretty much sums up my experience with Death Stranding. I was careful to not write an opinion on this game until I had enough hours put in as Kojima games can take a little time to get going, but he tends to start off at a warm temperature and by the end of the game things get nuclear. That's typically his style, so a player is usually not going to have trouble signing up for one of his journeys. But Death Stranding is no thrill ride. Even the dangerous stuff isn't all that dangerous and in the absence of motivation, I'm having difficulty justifying the time spent to endure Kojima's latest work.

It's a marvel to look at, but I'll get to the point; there's no excuse to make 30 fps games any more. I've been critical of other titles like Assassin's Creed: Odyssey and Horizon: Zero Dawn for running at that framerate and when this title comes out next year on PC, likely running at a blazing 60 fps and above (as is typically the case in the PC world), I suspect that we all may feel kind of silly about playing games in this manner. The only title I would give a pass for 30 fps would be Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which is a masterpiece that should be shown at The Louvre. BoTW is a work of art that changed the world. No other game gets this pass, certainly not Death Stranding.

Kojima gets some points in the form of technical achievement, but when you're attempting to immerse the player in a game that can last 50 hours or more, you're not being profound by withholding details about characters, settings, and context when you need these elements to establish an emotional connection to the player. If the game doesn't build its case for the player to continue on a journey within 5 minutes of pressing start, the experience will feel hollow. It saddens me to think that when I compare this to anything else Kojima has done, it does not stand shoulder to shoulder with any other title from his body of work. An unpleasant surprise.

Death Stranding’s mechanics may set new standards in gaming such as the one for keeping your balance and management of resources but unless you like a game about a UPS delivery man in a post-supernatural apocalypse America then best to pass on this.

I hate to write this because I had high hopes for Kojima's first SONY game, but he's blown it. The next game should be great if SONY has someone overseeing Kojima so as to keep him on task with making a great video game and not just an artistic video game.

UPDATE: I've seen far too many make excuses for Kojima's Death Stranding. This is not a good video game. It scores high in every area you would expect for a video game except for game play loop which is critical to a video games success. Death Stranding would have been better as a multi-chapter highly interactive exclusive play-station movie then a video game. There’s a reason its highly rated by the official critics but not with the audience and that’s because critics are either Kojima worshipers and will declare as a masterpiece anything the guy puts out or they are so burnt out on gaming that anything that’s not like a typical video game that is also not buggy is good in their eyes. Had any other studio made this game it would not have scored near as high.

A video game NEEDS a good game play loop and that’s something that Death Stranding is seriously lacking and that’s why its an excessively long and painful slog thru a beautiful world with damn near perfect characters and story.

The truth is that judging by his last 2 games ( since I haven't played the rest) Kojima seems to not be up to the standard on most creative areas (aside from cinematography which is great). The writing is laughably exposition heavy, the "sad-moments" are completely unearned, the dialogue is facepalm-worthy at times, the pacing is a mess and the gameplay ,while unique, feels not well realized as evident by the terrible bossfights that simply can't be satisfying with the type of gameplay that Kojima and his team chose to go with.
For god's shake you can't even pick up bullets that enemies drop, that is a cardinal gaming sin. I hope the next game by Kojima Production is better.

3 years after the Kojima-Konami split up, the first game from Hideo Kojima’s new production studio has finally released. While I would classify the game as a third-person action/adventure game, the game’s director classifies it as a new genre called – “Strand”. With some people calling this game a glorified walking simulator and some saying it’s one of the greatest games of all time, where does this game truly lie?

The story starts off with you playing as a delivery man named Sam Porter Bridges, who is played by Norman Reedus. Sam must deliver cargo to sectioned-off regions of a post-apocalyptic United States due to the unknown threats of the supernatural event known as the Death Stranding. Sam is then tasked to connect all of America to a collective network to save everyone. Sam is given a BB unit to help him with this task, a baby in a jar that can detect BT’s, which is just this game's version of ghosts. Honestly, I could spend all day just talking about the beginning of the game and all the terminology but that where Death Stranding story gets a lot of its charm. The story is engaging from beginning to end thanks to creative storytelling and a wonderful cast of actors that bring this world and story to life. The ending is one of the emotional and heartfelt rollercoasters I have witnessed this generation. If you are coming to Death Stranding for its story, you will not be disappointed.

The gameplay is trickier to talk about. Is it a walking simulator? – Yes and No. The first few hours can be sluggish as all you will do is walk packages from one location to another. This may turn some off from the game, but later portions start to pick up the pace. After the 3rd episode in the game, you are able to craft useful structures, signs, weapons, and vehicles that can help you or other players advance in the story. These structures can be given likes so you can see how many people found what you built and how useful it was to them. This sense of community and how you help each other progress is a big part of the game. There are 3rd person shooting segments every now and again, but that's not the primary focus of the game. It’s a game that some people will like and others will not, but despite that, I had fun helping other people reach their goals and encouraging them to see Sam’s journey to the end. There are moments where you will be bored or frustrated, like the beginning of the game or trudging through the snow at slow speeds, but if you’re willing to put in the work and see past some of the games greater flaws, there is fun to be had.

The game is a technical marvel. One of the best looking games on the PS4 by a long shot. The little details help flesh out the world and bring the actors' performances to life. Glitches are few and far between. Players getting stuck to obstacles and other little things rarely happen. The soundtrack is a fantastic mix of original and licensed songs. The Decima engine has come a long way since its first title, Horizon: Zero Dawn.

Death Stranding is honestly a hard game to review so I hope most of my thoughts on the game are clear. I think it’s a fantastic experiment when it comes to doing something new with video games. It can be boring at points but one thing that is never lost throughout the experience is the amazing story and how it is worked into what going on in the gameplay. If you’re on the fence about this game, I would wait until it’s on sale before picking it up. It’s hard to fully recommend this game, so you’ll have to come to your own conclusion on if you will like what is offered in Death Stranding. Whether you end up liking Death Stranding or not, it’s still one hell of a rollercoaster with a lot of thought and care put in to it.

    Pros:
    +Fantastic Story
    +Great Soundtrack
    +Top Notch Acting
    +Gameplay Centered On Community

    Cons
    -Very Slow Start
    -Some Frustrating Slow Parts

    - Atmosphere. Walking around in the world and a song comes on that perfectly expresses solitude. No other work/medium has ever hit this so well.
    - Graphics and geology. Really looks like running around in Iceland.
    - Slow paced gameplay can be rewarding if that's your thing.
    - A sense of community that caches you by surprise in a good way.
    - Spectacular visual moments and over all great acting. (See note on negatives)

    Here are the negatives:

    - The story seems like it is made from a word-association game. Strand, Porter, Heartman, Fragile, Higgs, Cliff, etc. They all play a part of the story, somehow tied to whatever proper noun they go by. Maybe if everything is to be interpreted as a metaphor, it could make sense. Still, it falls short, and falls pretty hard.
    - The visual moments are great, but again, it seems like they were put together for the sake of being a cool visual, than it actually making sense. It is enjoyable, the motion capture and acting is really top notch.

In conclusion, and perhaps a bit spoilery, so don't read on if you mind spoilers: Don't play this game for the story. First impression suggest great potential for profound depth. After completing the game, it's very underwhelming.

Played the game for about 10-15 hours and just can’t finish this game. The repetitive nature of delivering over and over and over again is not fun for me. All the work you have to do to get a cutscene is just not worth the grind.

There are moments in this game that truly took my breath away, such as the action based cinematic cutscenes, the incredibly realistic yet isolated world and structures, and the overall photorealistic visuals and unmatched sound design and voice acting. This only made it sting that much more when I realized the gameplay is truly the definition of tedious, dull, and truly uninspired. This game feels like it truly goes out of its way to frustrate and the player with baffling gameplay choices and an overall monotonous and unrewarding premise. This game is nowhere near a 10/10, but it’s also nowhere near a 1/10. There is serious, serious potential here, but it is squandered. I rarely felt positive emotions from this game, I didn’t feel like I was escaping to a universe I couldn’t wait to immerse myself in and find out what happens next. Instead, I couldn’t wait to escape the game. It was a chore. It truly is, carry this cargo to this location, then probably go back, and then do it again. Most games walking and traveling is a tedious chore, only done to get to the next action set piece or story beat. Here, walking and traveling IS the game. Carry as much cargo as you can, as quickly as possible to this location. Ok, let’s do this! Start jogging and you’ll soon fall over and damage your cargo. Get stuck in the rain, your equipment and cargo degrades quickly, so now you’re trying to deliver even faster, only to get blown down a hill by the wind or slip and fall from the wet rain. Then BB starts crying, and you literally have to stand there and rock your PS4 controller back and forth. Keep in mind your equipment and cargo is still being damaged from the rain. BT encounters were not exhilarating, just annoying and again, tedious. That’s the best way I can describe this game: tedious. Mind numbingly dull, monotonous, frustrating, baffling, WTF were they thinking. I’ve never been more disappointed in a game, never before have I seen such incredible and breathtaking potential only to have it squandered on a gameplay structure that focuses solely on inconveniencing the player. Please, Mr. Kojima, never again. This sucks. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Here is my review:

When you deliver your first package in a new region is when the gameplay is at its best as you explore an empty world and try to connect it. After that its gets repetitive: you can build structures and roads to make the backtracking easier, use other players structures to help yourself travel around, and craft equipment to be able to travel faster, carry more packages, or fight the enemies in the game. I wouldn't necessarily say that the gameplay is fun, it defiantly feels repetitive after a few hours, but it can drag the player in with how time-consuming it is. Fun? No. Addicting. Can be.

There are only a few enemies in the game. BT's, Mules, and Bosses. BT's are scary within the first hour of the game as you try to understand what they are and their methods, but by the middle of the game I literally drive by them on a motorcycle or kill them with grenades made from your own blood. I thought they were supposed to scare me, but when you have the ability to mow down every BT you can have your sights on, or ignore them completely as just they slow you down from delivering your next package they're more of a nuisance than an actual threat. Mules are the same though with the added threat of a void out if you don't burn their bodies if you decide to kill one of them. However, once you kill them they are gone forever. Bosses are fine, I love one of the final boss fights that deal with you fighting one of them by throwing packages at them (some nice self-awareness), and BT boss fights are fun at first but since you can run out of the area to avoid the fight, it makes it feel pointless.

The story is pretty average. The twists and turns are so obvious you will see them several hours ahead of their reveal or call them within first couple hours of the game. Even when the reveals come the game can't help but explain it to you a dozen times over through dialogue just so you get the point instead of letting you figuring it out yourself and letting you come to your own conclusions. The theme revolves around connections, and Kojima likes to use strands as a metaphor - though as I said before he will repeat this metaphor at least 20-30 times throughout the story just so you understand what he's trying to say.

Characters are mostly boring. You really only care for a few characters in the story, and even then they can be a bit annoying. Sam (Who you will only be calling Norman or Daryl) is the main focus of the story and is one of the best parts of the game - though even he has some flaws. When characters are talking there will be a moment of silence where you hope he will say something but he will just stand there like a fool. Fragile and BB are the only ones who you care about, and want to see their stories through till the end. As for the villains, Higgs and Cliff are your baddies: Cliff is the only one you really care about (although he can be annoying with how many boss battles you're going to have with him), and Higgs is all show no substance (though his actor may be the best in the entire game).

Dialogue in this game is painful to listen to as everyone talks formally and explains everything that they are saying and what is on their minds which is contrary to the normal person. The dialogue makes it hard to connect with the characters are they feel more like devices for the story instead of actual characters.

I hope Kojima recognizes the flaws with the game instead of claiming about how people don't understand it. Negating criticism doesn't make you a better developer. Taking those criticism and learning from them does.

Expect an exciting action from her is not worth it, although the story itself is pretty good. In general, the game cannot be called a masterpiece and that is why it has a small scale of points.

. The soundtrack is pretty. Not great, but it packs a nice punch. . The story is deep and emotional, characters are memorable and everything just feels genuinely original. . Despite its flaws, the story kept me going and curiosity got me hooked,

. Why does it need to repeat the same cutscenes and messages again and again? It should skip it automatically.
. TOO MANY TUTORIALS! TOO MANY THINGS ON SCREEN! TOO MANY USELESS NEW ITEMS! JUST LET ME *UCKING WALK!
. Unrewarding long and unnecessary sidequests.
    . Bosses are a joke.

    The Good:
    -Visual impact *10/10

    The bad:
    -Narrative & delivery *5/10
    -Gameplay & mechanics *4/10
    -Controls, particularly vehicles *3/10.
    -UI & menues *4/10
    -Plot *5/10

Areas I want to elaborate on:
-Narrative & delivery: I remember several scenes where I'm told "this works this way" only later to be told or have something happen that contradicts the "rules". The contents of the story got me hooked effectively, but the delivery of the story points left something to be desired. Uninspired and boring.

-Social Strand genre/mechanics: Hideo Kojima claims to have invented a new genre. The idea of connecting with other players by the means of liking and sharing objects in the gameworld. This idea was novel and I really enjoyed it. It made me think about the potential and how I would use it going forward.

-Memorable characters: the way characters have been written and are presented to me is very Anime. The idea that a character is a manifestation of a quirk or a gimmick. It doesn't write authentic characters, but it writes memorable ones that feel unique and you get what they are about immediately. Also Margeret Qualley's character(s) are hot. Ahem.

    Quickfire points:
-The storyworld (world building etc.), AKA: the collective of lore, world and mythos, is gorgeous and inspiring.
-Atmosphere gets you in the ZONE.
-A lot of care and effort put into the sound design. The sound effects are the star of the show along with:
-The visuals. You are gonna be awestruck by what you see in this game.

My subjective score for this game is an 8 but my subjective score is a 7.5. Where Death Stranding doesn't succeed, in my humble opinion, is in the game design.

I honestly feel like this is most beautiful game in existence, the graphics, environments, backgrounds are all incredibly stunning, especially during the last chapters of the game, but even immense beauty and a good story doesn't make up for its numerous bad mechanics and gameplay.

The gameplay of receiving, managing and then mostly struggling to deliver cargo from point A-to-B gets incredibly tiring and tedious after a while, and let's face it, it is a job, but it doesn't pay you well enough. I mean good story and beautiful environments is nice, but it is not enough of a payment for the amount of work you do, and helping co-workers and getting help from your co-workers (strand network) is also nice, but I still felt unappreciated for amount of things I set-up vs the amount of help and likes I got.

The choice to put rough terrain in the majority of this America that is designed to slow you, ruin your cargo and vehicle, just so you would have the job over and over again with no eventual complete way past it, aside from taking it slow or using a different slower route is horrible (zip-lines are a thing but they cost too much to set up, and I reached my chiral capacity way too quickly of which I had 26k).

I just want this job to be over with but Kojima (our boss) is making it long and dreadful, and for what reason? Filler? I don't understand the design choice of making my delivery job as painful as possible, and why are there so much rocks? It just doesn't make sense.

There are also delivery companies (UPS, Canada Post, Amazon) that get to listen to music on route to delivery, but our boss Kojima doesn't allow it, except for on special rare occasions that he deems fit and our travels are much rougher than theirs, any sane employee would be mad at their boss for such things but there is always gonna be delusional workers that love their job no matter what happens and that is the exact case with Death Stranding.

Also, Kojima likes to use out of date software, with upgraded hardware, its infuriating, like why do I have to skip 2 different scenes just to recycle, and why do those skips have confirmation windows with slight pauses in between, same thing applies to:
    - taking a shower
    - entering a safe house
    - leaving a safe house
    - pooing
    - peeing

Aside from all those problems, I still feel as though the beauty, story, music, and acting of the game make up for some of it and that is why I gave it a 6.

    - there is not much weapon variety (bola gun, grenades, your fists), you cant even use the electric spears of the enemies, which would have been a lot of fun.
    - attacking enemies while wearing your payload feels extremely clunky and unfun to perform
    - not much enemy variety either
    - you cant kill human enemies, because of them turning into void outs, so you only can stun them for a few seconds

    Traversing the environment:

    - walking around with a giant 120 kg, 3 meter high jenga tower on your back, while stumbling over rocks without falling, or climbing up ropes with the strength of your bare hands, while wearing the entire jenga tower on your back, looks just so immersion breaking. As if Kojima never heard of the terminology: center of mass. Couldn't they have restricted the backpack height just a little and gave him in exchange a few more drones which carry part of his payload and follow him around instead ? So that his movement while wearing the payload does not look as ridiculous?

    Story:

-The story is overall well done and it shows that Kojima does understand cinematography very well, but does his stories always have to be so esoteric and melodramatic ? I could have done easily without the paranormal ghost story in exchange for a alternate dimension colliding with our world sci fi approach. Let the deads rise up and void out, but at least try to give a halfway believable explanation for all of that, instead of resolving to pure esoteric giberish. After him explaining the reasoning of why the BBs (bridge babies) can see the BTs he totally lost me. That was the single most stupid thing i ever heard. Someone really needs to buy Kojima a few weeks of physic lecture on some university or college,so that he gets his facts straight and doesn't always have to resolve to pure esoteric nonsense in his story lines.

    Summary:

This game is a graphical milestone. The gameplay idea of having to constantly balance your payload on your back with the shoulder buttons, orelse risking a fall and potentially payload lost or damage is a very interesting and unique concept, but traversing the environment lacks a bit of variety and can get monotone very quickly and it certainly does not carry over 50+ hours. Adding a few additional gameplay elements and making the combat a little bit more challenging and engaging wouldn't have hurt the game either. If you love builder and hiking games then you are good, otherwise you maybe should stay away or test it at a friends house before buying.

Art direction is, not surprisingly, gorgeous, and the score is predictably immersive and emotive. While the story arc is intriguing, the writing itself seems stale in places and lost my interest over time. The cutscenes, well, it's Kojima so yes, there are more cutscenes than can be counted. I do appreciate the potential of cutscenes to further the story, but for me, they don't compliment the game as much as they compete with it. The rhythm of the gameplay simply doesn't match the rhythm of the scenes and I feel like they interrupt my experience more than enhance it. The core game mechanics seem to be the single biggest gripe to casual passerby, and though it does often feel like a glorified walking simulator, I do enjoy the slow pace and exploration factor. All in all, I think far too many of us are using the pre-launch hype as a measuring stick, but in and of itself, I found DS to be a fairly solid gaming experience. Not a strikeout or a homerun, but maybe a stand-up double. Expand

This game “while not for everyone” has some areas which we can objectively judge.

Pros: The story and world building are superb, with some well realised characters. There are some genuinely emotional moments in the story, together with some great surprises and twists along the way. The voice acting and motion capture are probably the best in any video game so far, and the direction is overall magnificent. The graphics also are worthy of praise, with some scenes, especially in that opening and some vistas nearing photorealism. Finally, the score and the soundtrack are beautiful and genuinely evoke a sense of wonder and really added to the daunting atmosphere the environment creates.

Cons: This game has one of the best opening sequences in recent memory, and then follows this up with 10 hours of slow and tedious fetch quests. The core gameplay loop is repetitive and completely unsatisfying, and slowly degrades into a test of the player’s patience. Even players who are looking for a calming experience while traversing the vibrant landscape will be disappointed as the cavalcade of elements that need to be micromanaged are overwhelming. Boot health, feet health, baby happiness, balance, package health etc. Certain obstacles are included purely for annoyance, and the required frequent backtracking makes this game extremely frustrating to play.

Why I gave this game a 7: From a gameplay perspective this game is a failure, however the story, world and characters were engrossing enough to keep me playing for the 50+ hours of the main campaign. Every time I turned off the PS4 out of frustration, I was back a few hours later, because I was so desperate to find out what happens in the story and figure out what is going on. I understand this won't be enough for everyone, but it was for me. However, that doesn't mean I had FUN with the gameplay, just that the story was enough for me to tolerate it.

Should YOU buy this game? The answer depends on how interesting you find the post-apocalyptic Sci-Fi setting and Kojima's narrative style. If it appeals to you, you will be able to overlook the awful gameplay loop. If it doesn’t then I wouldn’t recommend this game.

I paid 70$ not for that to look at product placement and monster energy drink. Why restoration of America why not restoration of whole world. Cutscenes could be more interactive. I like the gameplay, generally the game is interesting.

The first night after playing it, I had no choice but rant to a friend for the better part of an hour in trying to understand just how I had actually received it. I'll start with the positives. While the game isn't for everybody, it's not necessarily only for those of any profound "artistic sensitivity", to semi-quote a rather tasteless comment Kojima made in denigration to Americans and our supposed lack thereof. It is rather, I believe, more geared towards those who might enjoy a game like Harvest Moon, Stardew Valley, or maybe Truck Simulator. Along those lines. While much of the gameplay is rather mundane, I have actually taken great satisfaction in just navigating the landscape and managing my supplies. The whole "strand" thing has been neat too; it's fun to see others building things around and with you, and it's neat to know others are there, even if only in a kind of ethereal way. The game is generally beautiful, and a lot of the aesthetic is pretty cool, though some does come across as pointless and "artsy" to the point of maybe trying a bit too hard, a la Fragile's umbrella. In any case, there is a lot to appreciate here, but once again, the actual game part of the game seems more niche than would probably be ideal for a blockbuster game. It shouldn't be blamed for that, however. I'm genuinely happy to see something so bold executed at such a high level of production. Even if the game were to be a total failure, it would still be a cultural touchstone, more or less.
Now for the bad. The script. My God, the script is overwrought, self-indulgent, forced, and has made me cringe to the point I've thought of just hanging up my controller. Don't get me wrong, I generally love weird, obtuse things in general, often strangeness for its own sake, but much of this just feels contrived. The metaphors are almost not even metaphors for want of subtlety, and much of what might be profound in the game is obscured by what I can only describe as "off". It feels like a case of something trying to appear profound by means of obfuscation rather than any real meaning, and this coming from a huge fan of John Ashbery's poetry. I can digest weirdness well enough, but when it is clobbered up with things that are, to me, tastelessly stupid, I have a hard time. Take, for example, the name of one of the NPCs, "Die-Hardman". I can't get over how awkward and try-hard this feels to me. This kind of off-kilter, B-movie stuff might work in Metal Gear games, but this game takes itself far too seriously to pull it off, and it often comes across as just plain bad. This is all subjective, of course, but I am not into it. At all. Throw in some mind-bendingly out of place product placement, and now I'm just confused. It doesn't seem like the vision of an auteur as much as it feels like somebody trying to impress all his arthouse friends with a kind of manufactured esotericism. If it were only a movie, I'd just feel sick for having watched it. Most fortunately, the cutscenes can be skipped. I should say though, that the premise isn't entirely terrible. There are some really neat things that have been done in the game, and some of the concepts are generally pretty interesting. I personally think the intertwining of the worlds of the dead and the living and some of how that ties into the technology is actually pretty awesome. My problem is with the implementation, plain and simple. Altogether, I like the game. It has made me think, and the actual gameplay scratches a particular itch I have as a gamer. However, the game isn't for everybody, and the story framing it is for far, far fewer. Certainly for Kojima himself. It is beautiful, it is strange, it is provocative, but it is not well-written, it is not subtle, and its themes don't go any deeper than any like-minded platitude. There are beautiful moments in the game, moments that might actually border on the profound, if only it didn't get in its own way.

Now, to the actual PLAYING of the game. This is where DS lost me, i'm afraid. After hours and hours of walking, doing fetch quests and dealing with all sorts of frustrations on the way (corrosive rain, ghosts, enemies, terrain, letting stuff drop in the water, the constant screeching of the baby etc), I just could not take it anymore. I was tired, the game felt like a job, a chore and not in a good way. I was not enjoying it one bit. It just became a boring, frustrating, exhausting experience.

Also, I do believe the game is overrated. Is it different? Yes, no question about it. Is it a 'genre defining' game, something that will forever change the industry? Absolutely not. It's another niche game; some people will love it, some people will hate it - and probably for the right reasons.

I was curious, I gave it a try and realized it was not for me.

Death Stranding certainly isn't for everyone; a game that perhaps would have been better served as a movie. I'd describe it as an open-world adventure game. I'd describe it as an open-world adventure game. The basic premise is to carry cargo from point A to B, and by doing so you will reconnect America by adding said points onto a network once you reach them. It doesn't sound too interesting, and that's because unfortunately, it's not. 90% of the actual gameplay is spent travelling across a visually stunning but empty world, trying not to damage your cargo, eventually arriving at a terminal (which all look exactly the same) to submit your cargo whilst someone praises you via a hologram. Occasionally you'll come across other player's objects (ladders, bridges, etc.) to help you along your travels, which works really well. The other 10% is spent in menus or stealth sections where you can sneak past the invisible BTs with the help of your Odradek. This translates as: crouch walking around ghosts. These sections are quite easy, as the BTs can't see you, and will only react if you touch them or make too much noise. In fact, the whole game is surprisingly easy. I played on hard and died a total of five times, three of which only happened because the throwing mechanics in a certain boss fight were so terrible. The only other time you'll get any action is when you run into Mules; run-of-the-mill enemy patrols that will attempt to steal your cargo, described in the game as "cargo junkies" (it's as dumb as it sounds), or boss fights which are sometimes quite cool, albeit repetitive. There's a certain part in a boss fight towards the end that I presume is supposed to be epic and meaningful but in reality can only be described as laughable. As in, I actually laughed at how ridiculous the whole scenario was.

The story is what carries this game for the most part. Kojima is a fantastic storyteller and it's clear that a great amount of effort went into the story alongside an amazing celebrity cast. There are over nine hours of potential cutscenes that take you on an intriguing adventure and whilst some parts feel needlessly confusing, overall, it is quite brilliant. However, it certainly isn't without it's flaws. Besides the occasional moments of pretentiousness, awkward dialogue, and ASMR chewing, some parts of the story just don't really make sense. I found a few minor plotholes that have bugged me since discovering them. But the overall premise of reconnecting America, whilst sounding good in theory, doesn't really make much sense in this game's world. Whenever anyone dies and their body isn't properly destroyed, it will cause a 'voidout', destroying everything around it and leaving a huge crater in the ground. There is also a powerful terrorist force actively nuking populated areas in an attempt to cause an early extinction. With that in mind, it makes no sense to attempt to 'rebuild' anything given how easily it can crumble back down. Kojima stated that this game is partially in response to Trump's wall and Brexit, and how we should be bringing people together rather than dividing them (the rope and the stick) - a message most of us can get behind. However, the game insists on a numeric like count on other player's online objects. In a time where so many people feel disconnected by social media, having this system seems rather backwards. Rather than helping our fellow players because we want to, we're instead gathering likes for it, which makes it feel far less genuine.

Overall, it pains me to say that I didn't particularly enjoy Death Stranding. Whilst the visuals are stunning and the story is rich and interesting, the online interaction is really cool - all complimented by a great soundtrack, the gameplay is tedious beyond belief - made up purely of fetch side quests that I would often skip in other games. Incredibly unrewarding all around and featuring lazy stealth sections and uninspired action. I had high hopes for this game knowing that Kojima had free reign without being restrained by Konami. But now I wonder, despite all the bad, if Konami has had more positive input into his games than we thought. Death Stranding feels like what happens when nobody speaks up and every idea is thrown into a game regardless of whether it actually makes it better or not. Kojima has said that Kojima Productions will be making films in the future, and whilst I may crave another 00s Metal Gear Solid-type game, after playing Death Stranding I encourage them to step into filmmaking territory. If Death Stranding were a movie people would have probably enjoyed it a lot more. I went into this game knowing that it wouldn't be for everyone, and that to me was a good thing. But now I'm left wondering who it actually is for.

I gave this game another chance after my 5/10 review. I put the difficulty down to very easy which has made the game a much more enjoyable experience since it basically negates all the durability systems and seems to make traversal easier. It is dumb that the music player is only available in the private room...seems like a huge oversight that you can't play the game's tracks while walking, but I guess that is what my phone is for. The real star of the game though the community involvement. There is something fun about leaving ladders and ropes behind knowing you're probably making someone else's life a little easier. Reminds of Dark Souls a little bit. I like that you can drop lost cargo at any delivery station and entrust it to another player if the intended destination is out of your way. I also enjoy delivering other people's cargo for them. The system of walking trails appearing on routes that are frequently walked is cool too. Basically this game is saved by the asynchronous multiplayer. If it didn't have this my review would probably still be at a 5. Overall after giving it a second chance and dropping the difficulty I am enjoying it a lot more because durability and traversal are basically non-issues now. Expand

Death Stranding is not an action game, and if that is what you're searching for, look elsewhere. It may have some action sprinkled throughout, but this is basically a hiking game, where the goal is to send packages through a hostile terrain. You'll unlock several tools that will make traversing this terrain easier, while at the same time you'll face harder and harder obstacles. Whether it's deep rivers, large mountains, terrorists, ghosts or epic boss fights, there's always something new to keep you on your toes, and it's very rewarding to get to the other side with a well-cared package. It's not a game for the masses, like the Metal Gears were, however.

That being said, although Hideo Kojima is a great game designer, a great writer he is not. And when it comes to the story, this is Kojima at his worst. I'm not speaking of the tongue-in-cheek moments Kojima is famous for, which I find amusing even though they do often mess with the story's tone. What kills me the most are the endless hours of exposition, with often multiple characters explaining a simple concept over and over again in the same cutscene, each time using different metaphors that do nothing but make the ideas harder to grasp. You could cut hours of cutscenes and radio conversations out of the game and nothing would be lost, which is objectively a sign of bad writing (or a lack of editing). The dialog often feels unnatural. When characters aren't busy explaining things, they're delivering melodramatic monologues that feel unearned and uninteresting. The ending is about 5 hours long, complete with showing the (unskippable) credits twice, with Kojima's name obviously appearing about 10 times throughout.

Graphically, the game looks amazing, and the soundtrack is also excellent, although I miss the option to play songs while I'm walking around the landscape, and the few times the game automatically plays a song for you it's almost always cut off too soon by enemies or a cutscene. The game also suffers from terrible UX, with the need to display a small little cutscene for every action you make in the menus resulting in a constant "Options->Skip Cutscene->Confirm" to do simple things as "selling" useless items.

Overall, it's a fun (and quite original) game to play, with a great soundtrack and visuals, but with a terrible story and tedious menu flows. I do hope Kojima keeps making games, I just hope someone stands up to him and helps him write a better story.

I wanted to love this game and for a time I did, but after 25 hours or so I gave up as the core gameplay loop is very repetitive

There are a few standout moments in the game which are awesome, but 80% of the game is just walking/driving back and fore between checkpoints dropping off parcels The first few time I went through BT or Mule areas were brilliant but then after awhile it

A Uber Eats game... You go from one point to another, (boring) then cinematic everywhere; I think the game has a wrong concept of how 'the industry should be' and I am very sorry to say that it does not meet my expectations. Hideo, you failed.

An average game, not a revolution or a new game as Kojima says. Wonderful graphic and sound, bit gameplay Is so boring...

Death Stranding is creating a new game genre and therefore paves its own path towards more interactive experiences. It is a brave work thanks to its novelty, which fortunately is not a bragging right for its creators, as it may have seemed, but an exceptional title that will reward the brave who play it. This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
