It's almost The Last of Us - the open-world game. The writing, characters and dialogue just aren't quite up to Naughty Dog standards. The generic quest design lets the game down a bit, but other than that it's a very enjoyable and atmospheric open-world game. Bike and combat mechanics work well and the zombie hordes are intimidating. The hardcore challenge mode is another outstanding feature.

This game is proof of how you should play a game for yourself and not trust reviews. I really enjoyed playing days gone. Story although a bit cheesy and predictable at times, somehow still managed to keep me intrigued (good actors). Game is addictive and the environment feels great. The hordes are the best part of the game.

Glad to see that those who play it like it as opposed to those who reviewed it. Only complaint is the audio sync is messed up TERRIBLY and after being out for a year or so the games still pretty buggy. Don’t let this stop you though. The game is still loads of fun.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I ended up buying this game after I watched a few videos showing how much it improved. Overall it's a great game. If I was to imagine what a post apocalyptical open world infected zombie game would be, it would be pretty close to this. The game does a great job immersing the player into the world. It's fun to drive around on my hog and see what's going on. A lot of the characters are spot on representations. From people who have been waiting all their lives for some end of the world stuff to happen. To others doing their best to protect the people. Everything this game does, it does it well. Shooting, hand to hand combat, driving and exploring feel good.

That isn't to say there isn't some issues. I find the game has some inconsistences in it's story telling and characters. People do and say things that make little sense or contradict earlier things they said. For instance, earlier in the story I was sent on a job to get something and the guy who sent me out wasn't worried about causing trouble with a certain group of people. Later in the story he tells me I don't want to anger the leader of those same very people earlier he didn't care if I killed. Then 2 seconds later he says we need to take care of the group of people he just said not to mess with. It absolutely makes no sense. Or how about Saint John being a complete jerk to people in the camps, yet needing their help and or working with them. It makes no sense to create ill will with people you're constantly working with.

There's other another issues that irk me. Anytime you go into a camp and walk by the mechanic or anyone else in a camp, they comment on you being there. If you happen to walk by them a few seconds later, they comment like they haven't seen you in days. You can do this over and over again. At one point I had a mission to check in on a friend. I drove all the way over there to ask him something for him to reply completely incorrectly to what I was asking and that was the whole mission. It's little things like this that don't seem right in a game that gets so much right. Then there's rescuing screaming survivors who are always the same few character models. Why would anybody scream in your face while rescuing them in a zombie apocalypses? Again, it makes no sense.

Another thing that bothers me is how the game tries very hard to say who would survive the zombie apocalypse and who wouldn't. Only the gangsters, drug addicts, bikers and ex cons would survive. The game even says accountants wouldn't make it out in this world, says who? They try to make this clear delineation of who's capable of surviving and it makes no sense. Survival skills are not base on being a bad$ss on the streets before everything went down.

But besides these few issues, the game itself is a ton of fun and I would totally recommend.

Love this game, the characters are great, the story is awesome, I love the fact that its open world. The only real gripe I have about this game was the dumb AI. You could hide in a bush and kill a complete horde of infected without them finding you.
Other than that this game was a blast to play and I hope we see a second game soon.

This is a good example of all the problems with the modern day gaming critics who are pressured to pump out review after review and so they don't really put the proper time into all the games. I'm stunned at some of the terrible reviews it received.

This was the most solid 8 even rating game I can think of. It does not have the transcendent game changing feel like GOW but it doesn't

This was the most solid 8 even rating game I can think of. It does not have the transcendent game changing feel like GOW but it doesn't need to if you enjoy open world games. It's a beautiful open world with a lot of weapons and tactic options (stealth vs all out force). The random horde encounters, sometimes even during an ongoing mission, can be hilarious and/or terrifying. Having to monitor and plan for fuel is a fun twist that keeps things interesting. The story has a lot of common cliches but it's still entertaining and the voice acting is excellent. The map by end game is HUGE. Bike customization is a little limited but nice and I wish the outfit could be customized as well.

I don't have as much time as I used to for gaming, but I had a blast turning this on and spending a couple hours at a time busting up some freakers. If you enjoy open world with scavenging and crafting then I recommend giving this a shot.

However, there are some bugs and errors that can destroy your experience like FPS Drops. The campaign itself is decent and makes you want to play more and more, but the writing itself is not the best. 3 out of the 5 camps of the game are pretty much useless and there are some missions that are non-sense in the context of the story.

The first few hours are EXTREMELY slow, this is what caused me to take so long to fully complete the game, having owned the game since 2019 and having restarted it SEVERAL times, I wouldn't say that the start of the game is boring, but it's very close to that description BUT if you persevere and get past the first few hours, the game really opens up and becomes a lot of fun.

Riding your motorbike is the main traversal mechanic in the game, and is well designed as the controls take some time to get used to but become really fun once you master them. Driving down a country road or through an old abandoned town feels very relaxing and intimate. Exploring the world and finding what used to be of a society is always really fun to do in these types of games. The zombie hordes are the real highlight of this game, with many encounters forcing you to mow down hundreds of zombies at once. I’m about 10 hours into the game, and so far some of the reviews are absolute rubbish, haven’t encountered a single bug or glitch, and no pop ins, maybe the day one 23gb patch fixed those issues. The story is solid, the open world is amazingly good. Anyone with critical thinking can workout my so many critics hate on this game, poor little snowflakes.

Bend Studio made a great game with a rich, believable and captivating story. They’ve also resisted the lure of trends: there’s no multiplayer, no lootboxes, no “game as a service” plans – just a very solid (and finite) singleplayer experience. That makes it a rare gem these days, maybe one of the last of its kind. [Issue#238, p.42]

I expect and hope for a sequel. Just know that going into this game that there is a lot of tedious nonsense to pad out a really good game to make it feel more worth every dollar, much to its detriment. I want to give this game a better score because the best moments are so good, but the large portion of this game is so bloody tiring that I just can’t.
