This could be one of the most well balanced games that are available to play on your PS4. Good story(For a Souls game), good mechanics, great gameplay, good difficult, amazing atmosphere and incredible satisfying combat.

    Top 3 Souls game.

Pretty damn good. I think it's a better game than DS1 but I think I still prefer DS1...does that make sense? Very good game.

This is one of my top 5 favourite games of all time currently. It has such a large amount of options for builds. The boss fights are great and enjoyable when you finally overcome them. I took a long time to platinum this. It was cancerous to grind for the covenant items which is a big drawback but this is not a forced mechanic.
Thank you for reading. Enjoy Gaming.

Combat felt so satisfying in this game compared to ds1 and ds2. I love how cinematic the bosses in this game were, easily has the best bosses of the trilogy and the dlc further proves this. Although some level designs were not fromsoft's best the game is still the best in the trilogy.

The game is amazing. There is nothing as satisfying as finally beating a boss after struggling on it for a while. The only issue is that it can be hard to know where to go and what to do to progress.

For a spell user this is how 10% of my game is. Secondly as I'm playing a software update takes place and the problem gets worse. How long do I wait for the next software update. Fantastic game but a game of this challenge level cannot have these issues. One other issue with this game which no one talks about is the online portion of the game being necessary. Some bosses for some builds are just un-winnable with certain builds (ie magic) and require co-op help. Should the servers shut down I would be stuck being not able to progress in the game. As awesome as this game can be those features for me make it worthy of deducting 2 points off the quality of what could be a perfect game. Lets face it this is a 30-80 hour game and if one is going to replay it it will be in the future for me and who knows when that will be. Still in the present this game can be a perfect 10 if you make the right build but lets not forget if you chose magic or pyromancy as I did maybe your experience will be on the lower end of the scale awaiting another game with a different build. Or not. Expand

From the perspective a of a Souls veteran who put thousands of hours into previous titles, I'm actually glad that this is supposed to be the last one. While it's still pretty good Souls material, it has it's moments and I really enjoyed my playthroughs, I must say, this has been my least favourite entry in the series.

It lacks it's own unique flavor, most places you visit, you feel like you've been there before, most NPC's you meet you feel like you've met before, most items and weapons are straight up copy-paste from previous games, it just feels like playing the same thing all over again, I appreciate the nostalgic tidbits here and there, but this went a little bit too far, whole experience felt too repetitive, like all previous Souls titles mixed together without creating it's own unique identity.

It's still an amazing game that's worth playing through at least once, but the thing is, Demon Souls, Dark Souls and Bloodborne were true masterpieces, even Dark Souls 2 while it had some problems, I enjoyed it more, mainly for it's amazing multiplayer/pvp/covenants, which is another area where DS3 is seriously lacking. The fact that it's probably the most linear of all Souls games doesn't help either and severely hurts replayability.

To end the review on a praising the sun note, world design is again top notch here, very complex especially in it's verticality, some areas such as Irithyll are just beautiful, gameplay is still fun, bosses that stand out this time for me were Abyss Watchers, Dancer or Nameless King. Some of the lore elements were very interesting, entire questline with Yuria and lord of hollows, mysteries around Londor or children of Gwynevere, very good stuff and it made me go back for some more digging, so as I said, still a great game and a suiting end to the franchise, but...

I hope this was truly the last Souls title and I'm looking forward to see something really new from From Soft next time, because the talent is absolutely still there, they just need to focus on new ideas instead of rehashing the old ones. 8/10

Dark Souls III is, by far, the hardest game I have ever played. As a person who loved and was decent at Bloodborne, this game proved to be quite the challenge. It is a little glitchy, and some of the bosses are a little weak, but this is a challenging, yet very exhilarating game to play.

A typical fromsoft game exactly as would be expected. Well almost.

Firstly there is the standard suite of issues, non-corporeal cover, camera randomly unlocking, a strange issue unique to this iteration in which swiping attacks will considered to not be blocked by holding your shield up as the game hitboxes them from the side (i doubt this is intentional as it is inconsistent) - but any returning player will be used to them and any new player will learn to forgive eventually.

The visuals aren't as striking or interesting as bloodborne, I thought fromsoft was taking a step in a new direction but it has come full circle castles, castles, hallways and castles though there are some nice varied environments interweaving in unexpected places such as a poisonous swamp which is basically this games Blighttown, overall they arent as striking as they could be. This isnt helped by a lot of weapons and armor being recycled. Granted there is some necessity for this, the world wouldnt ever move on that much and you cant really have dark souls without the sword/axe/dagger/spear dichotomy but again when compared to bloodbornes transforming barrel-o-fun tinker toys especially after the release of the old hunters (imo a shining example of how DLC should be done and one that can only be made by expert storytelling in the base game) its a bit lackluster. Having different movesets on similar weapons is nice, I liked that i ended up using a different basic sword because its charged r2 was a thrusting attack with increased range as it shows good design. The weapons system in terms of upgrading is appropriately varied, the magic seems far more balanced (except in PvP but you can't expect them to nerf an otherwise legitimate build so it comes with the territory) and generally the combat system is competent.

However the mobs are some of the most artificially dangerous in the whole series. They have moves of different speeds tied to the same windup animation making it incredibly hard to dodge and for some bizarre reason all enemies get hyperarmor on attacks which powers through yours so unless you fancy trading damage, which you don't have enough estus to do, the only solution is to block or dodge around like a lunatic as enemies can now use flurries of varying lengths (which I like) but this only plays counter to the fact they can't be staggered out of an attack by reading it and reacting first - a dex mainstay. Oddly it works in PvP so no idea what that's all about. This gets especially irritating with enemies who have super amounts of stamina and just spaz out constantly like outriders making fighting them far from pleasurable and one of the few experiences i would ever say is genuinely unfair (alongside the Anor Londo Archers in DS1), particularly when they can kill you in two to three hits, move lightning fast, can't be interrupted but can interrupt you. And they're not bosses, and you have to fight a long way to get to them, and as they're not bosses they dont have points when they stop attacking or have to recover. Generally however the combat is the standard fantasy batman awesomeness where you'll feel rewarded for success and learn from failure and this leads into the bosses.

As always some are a joke, some bounce like a basketball, one in particular is deliberately programmed to punish dodge spamming which is hilarious and really put peoples ability to the test. There are irritating gimmicky ones that just frustrate but as per usual these are what people play the series for, intense pitched battles and a real fist pump feeling of success. As always the bosses are interesting and visually distinct from everything else in the game whilst looking like they ought to be there, though it seriously lacks the lovecraftian horrors like Ludwig the Accursed, Amygdala and the moon presence which brought bloodborne to life, but with the source material they did an excellent job of establishing variation with a couple of exceptions when you have to rely on a certain gimmick to kill a boss, yhorm and the enchanted sword being a particularly stupid example.

All in all the more things change the more they stay the same and whilst I'm happy overall I cannot understand why some of the design choices were made except in aid of a pretense to difficulty claiming DS3, the last in the series, would be the hardest. Artificial difficulty and messing with players learned instincts over four games isn't difficulty. Its Dick-icculty. Its an intentional dick move. These complaints will subside as you play however it has the same addicting three in the morning quality as you'd expect from a dark souls title.

Anyway, the game itself is outstanding, as you would expect and manages to surpass even the bench mark that is Dark Souls 1.

Good - The world and level design are by far the best of any souls game. The levels connect together beautifully but are also pretty large to boot. They are also beautiful to look at and provide an amazing atmosphere somewhere in between souls and Bloodborne. Some of the best level design I have ever seen, putting many other games to shame.

The gameplay, as always, is top notch and very addictive with a large number of playstyles available which makes for hundreds of hours of gameplay and provides huge replayability. The bosses are far superior to Dark Souls 2 and actually mean something again making them even more memorable than Dark Souls 1 or Demon's.

There are also a great number of weapons and armor sets to discover which has always been a part of souls games.

Bad - The character creator isn't great with a few bugs and issues that seemed to have carried over from Bloodborne, thin, Giraffe like necks being one, hopefully it will be patched but Bloodborne never was. The worst thing is having item 'drop rates' - which is nothing more than a lazy way to make items hard to get. Devs can't think of anything better so simply slap a 1% drop rate on something to make it difficult to obtain. It can make trying to get a particular armor set very frustrating and simply is not any fun.

Verdict - An amazing game that is the finest Souls to date and at least equals Bloodborne. This will score a 9 or even a 10 for me with some sizeable dlc. Addictive, creative and atmospheric Dark Souls 3 completely delivers. 8/10.

There are a few trophies that rely on covenant items that require 7+ hours of grinding per item. You could technically get these quicker but it you are relying on people getting invaded and wearing the faction item required to summon you to their game and then kill the invader. Unfortunately grinding is a lot more reliable than the summoning method. I wish From Software provided a better alternative to these covenants because its just not enjoyable and it kept me from getting the platinum by 1 trophy. Traversing castles, towers and various ruins, your journey will test the limits of your pitiable existence as you put down restless souls throughout the kingdom of Lothric in an attempt to "link the fire" and restore the kingdom to some semblance of normalcy.

FROM's latest installment in their Dark Souls franchise attempts to strike out of the mold by incorporating some elements of their recent hit, Bloodborne. While the faster combat will certainly stir some feelings of familiarity for those who have conquered the Lovecraftian action-RPG, there's not much else. No, this title falls squarely in Dark Souls territory: you know it from the minute you see the shield in your off-hand at the character creation screen. Fights are to be approached with caution, as even the humblest of enemies can deliver a swift and punishing death.

While Dark Souls 3 is more defense-oriented, the purposefulness of combat will sharpen your strategic mind. Coming across a pack of enemies, a flurry of thoughts cross your mind: Can any of them use ranged attacks? How fast do they run? What kind of weapons are they wielding? Maybe you pull one out of the pack with an arrow to better your odds, maybe you sneak behind and target the squishiest enemy with a backstab attack. There is certainly some room for variety in your tactics, and the constant fear combined with engagement lends to an entertaining and consistent gameplay experience.

A major pain-point of the Dark Souls series has been, and continues to be, camera performance. Targeting and un-targeting enemies is essential in games like this, and yet on some occasions the camera responds dismally when utilizing the targeting system in closed-quarters. The spinning camera is not only disorienting, it can certainly be the difference between life and death, which of course results in angry gamers and serves to highlight the problem even more.

Even without camera issues, it's no secret that the Dark Souls franchise prides itself on its difficulty. Across gaming forums and in living rooms across the country you'll hear the common response to gamers' complaints about the title: "Git Gud". However, like the flame that flickers within the spirit of our protagonist, the novelty of Dark Souls difficulty is fading. After playing the first two Dark Souls to completion, and thoroughly conquering Bloodborne (platinum trophy GET), many bosses were familiar, and the strategies I had used in the previous months were surprisingly effective. Still, while the boss fights falter in difficulty, the ever-lurking threat of death seeded in the mobs that patrol Lothric force you to remain vigilant.

If there's one element that Dark Souls 3 improved on from previous entries, it would be the world that it casts us into. Aesthetically, it's a major improvement over the last two titles. I often found myself distracted by the landscape, a fatal error in a game like this one, and one I paid the price for on at least two occasions. As for the story itself, it is at its best when you remain unaware of the larger picture. Other titles guide you down their storyline road brick by brick until you arrive at your final destination. Dark Souls prefers that the player approach it as a 1,000 piece puzzle: getting bits and pieces at a time, sometimes out of order, certainly requiring more than one play-through, until it can be appreciated in all its glory. Many players may leave the puzzle unfinished and still be able to walk away satisfied, but for those who persist, the reward is sweet.

In short, Dark Souls 3 delivers just about everything fans of the series have come to expect: punishing difficulty, a vast and mysterious world with untold secrets (many of which you don't know that you don't know), and a long and lonely journey through a dark and shattered world. Any fan of the Dark Souls franchise should be glad to have this in their library.

    Praise the sun!

However, what DS1 vets didn't like to see were the number of bosses. It actually has the least number of bosses in any Soulsborne game to date (DLC plz) with 19.
Combat feels smooth with (in my experience) accurate hitboxes and if I die it's not because of controls or game mechanics, it's cause I suck/screwed up.
PvP is frustrating but will hopefully smoothen out glitches and rebalance weapons (Estoc plz) and if you love invading get used to getting ganked (Google if unsure).

Going from the previous Dark Souls games, you can tell that this game has made many improvements. One of the main improvements, going through the whole series, is having a better user interface. I mean, I really loved the older titles, like Demon’s Souls, but the navigation and menu systems were a bit of a hassle.

Some will say that Dark Souls 3 has been more casualized, but I really don’t believe that’s the case. What’s really been done is that these new game entries are made easier to get into. Originally, predecessors were really hard to get into. Now, that’s not the case, and with the availability of the Internet one can easily search for answers.

There are downsides in this case, present in many of the other titles in the series. For example, sidequests are easily missable and are really difficult to do due to tight, unclear timeframes for doing them. The story is also very unclear. If you want to understand the story, you’ll very likely need to look up resources online and get involved in the community. These are clear decisions that From Software made, and that’s the kind of game it’s supposed to be. It’s not like they did so on accident. There’s a great deal of good lore in the game, but it’s tricky to understand because it’s a narrative told very implicitly.

If you don’t care for the lore, you don’t need to. One can easily jump into this game, even without playing any of the other Souls games without having to understand any of the lore at all. The gameplay is independent of the story. One could be an expert playing it, never getting hit, yet not understand any of the story. That’s fine. But, if you want a cinematic game where the story is explicitly told to you, this game won’t appeal well to your tastes.

The developers and publishers like to advertise the games difficulty. It’s not the case that it’s that difficult. Perhaps it’s just me, but with each entry into the series the games become easier and easier. If you’re not good at action games, it’s alright. With practice, this game is easily beatable. In fact, From Software is smart in their approach.

To complete the main storyline of the game, the bosses aren’t particularly difficult. It’s in the optional content where the bosses get difficult. But to be honest, this game is much more approachable than the old knitty-gritty games. One of my friends compared Demon’s Souls to an NES-like game, but I wouldn’t agree with that because those NES games were what we called “Nintendo-hard”, a much higher echelon of difficulty. This game is honestly fair. Worst comes to worst, one can always grind to gain levels.

I really enjoyed this game for its bosses. Many of the bosses in all Souls games are optional, and it’s where the true challenge lies. Nowadays, other games don’t have bosses. As an old-timer, I liked having bosses in most genres of games. I’m the kind of individual that saves items to use for bosses. Bosses are supposed to be a challenge at the end of the level or stage. Sadly, since many games have become more cinematic, bosses (and even final bosses) are becoming more and more into quick-time events. Seeing a game with so many bosses like this is phenomenal. If you want more challenge, you can always get involved in PvP, player-versus-player, where you’ll face other players of the highest calibre.

This game actually has optional bosses that aren’t re-skinned versions of older bosses! This is a rare sight because game developers typically put all of their resources into the main storyline of the game and put optional areas as recycled content. They know that most people would finish the storyline, but not everyone would finish the optional content.

In Dark Souls 3, this is not the case. You’ve got many optional bosses (and I don’t believe any are missable), each residing in optional areas. They’re detailed like crazy. Souls is the only series where you see this nowadays because it’s a very big risk for game developers to do otherwise. But due to the connotations associated with the Souls series, this is one of the only series that can actually pull it off without locking it behind DLC. As well, there will likely be expansion DLC available for the game later, such as how Scholar of the First Sin was available for Dark Souls 2. This is the only series where I buy DLC because they’re actually full expansions, rather than just one extra level or one extra weapon/armor.

Get this game. I was really impressed by this game and the risks the developers took in creating it. It really is one of the only games of its kind nowadays. This game, like the other Souls games, is very re-playable and is hard to get old due to the amazing gameplay.

Dark Souls III rarely innovates, but it experiments within the Souls parameters to grotesque and glorious effect. Another Game of The Year contender, then. [June 2016, p.81]

Dark Souls III is all-consuming, it’ll drive you up the wall, and the sense of accomplishment you’ll get when everything clicks and you go on to finish that final boss... well, it’s simply beyond compare [June 2016, p70]

The best Dark Souls game to pick up right now, and a fitting finale for the series. [May 2016, p.58]
