A step down from Danganronpa 1 and 2. While this one had better trial mechanics, this one had fewer likeable characters and was often predictable if you remember the events of the first 2 games to the point you can guess which character will be killed off and know who not to bother getting attached too early. The ending was also anticlimactic and can leave people feeling hollow instead of hopeful and the game overall relies more on cheap fan service. It is a shame because there are some good characters, the music is bopping, and the art is seriously improved from the last games so it is by no means a lost cause or bad game, but sadly it had big shoes to fill. I really enjoyed this game, there are many flaws whatsoever.
Positive aspects: Most of the characters are amazing and they had a GREAT development, the cases are interesting (yet quite predictable), great minigames and good plot twists in my personal opinion.
Negative aspects: The predictable cases, the existence of the love hotel,I agree that some of the cases were pretty forced and

V3 is an unfortunate stain on what is otherwise a brilliant series. Virtually nothing about this game improves on the previous entries. From the characters to the cases, it's all a big step down. I didn't care when most people died, I even figured out some of the cases well before their trial, both reasonably new experiences for me as a Danganronpa player. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An ending SO bad that it actually ruins the entire franchise. Felt like a huge "$%&@ you" to the fans. As if we're being shamed for liking a game they made.

I've never had so many complaints about a game I enjoyed this much. Overall it was fun, if too predictable. But that ending makes me want to throw all copies I have of all Danganronpas across all platforms in the garbage bin and replay 999/VLR/ZTD.

On the surface, the cast of Danganronpa V3 feels just like any other. The characters range from loveable to obnoxious and the trials themselves function in much the same way as previous games, where the goal is to uncover the killer by collecting and presenting evidence at trial.

The problem with V3 stems from the story itself. In previous iterations, the game slowly immersed you into the killing school life as though you were living it side-by-side with the characters, but Spike Chunsoft decided to double down on despair this time by attempting to blend fiction with reality and the end result left me feeling detached from everything I thought I knew and loved about this franchise. I understand what they were going for, and if Danganronpa was a movie perhaps it’s plot wouldn’t be so maligned, but when the objective of advancing a trial involves physically putting the controller down for story progression, that is a line no game should cross. At times it felt, for lack of a better expression, like a massive troll job.

Don’t get me wrong, V3 is still a good game worth picking up for any Danganronpa fan. Ultimately, though, I’m not sure it’s worth the emotional investment of the previous games. To each his own.

I'm a huge Danganronpa fan. Played 1 & 2 and Ultra Despair Girls multiple times and bought across multiple formats. Have the manga, anime and a ton of merch too.

So I was quite psyched for DV3. What did I think?

I liked most of the game, but at this point it was starting to feel too familiar following the exact same structure from the previous games to the letter, tossing in a few minor barely noticeable additions. Funny enough the ending does explain this in its own way. If anything, the ending was perhaps the only part that made it stand out.

In terms of narrative, DV3 still nailed it. Each chapter was well executed (excuse the pun) and to the Danganronpa standards we know and love. The characters were all pretty well flushed out and better developed than D2. However, I do feel their Ultimate talents where poorly thought out and didn't really fit the characters they were attached to, at least for most of them (the Maid, Pianist, and Magician being the only exceptions to this.) As for the ending, I didn't like it. Don't get me wrong, I still think it was an interesting idea that helps set DV3 apart from the other games. BUT, I also think it was done poorly and a bit too preachy. Coming across more as a PSA message, belittling the mentality of its players, and even humanity in general. I get what the developers were trying to do, but I think they poured it on a bit thick there.

As for the extras: Whoever made the S rank requirement on mean for the trophies = DAMN YOU! I ended up hating those mini games in the end. Also the board game idea just did not interest me. Tried it a few times, did not like it. Feels more like shovelware for my phone. But it did look nice.

    Overall:
Danganronpa V3 is a great sequel that really just hammers in the fact that this getting too familiar. While I did enjoy the main story, I also now feel a bit tired of this style of play. I think if Danganronpa wants to continue its time to reboot the series and overhaul the game structure. Ultra Despair Girls had the right idea. Now take it a step further.

    Side Note:
I still think the biggest missed opportunity the Danganronpa series has missed is the multiple story archs. Each game has the same linear story with the same suspects and murders every time. Meaning the magic of the story really only hits you the first time you play it. After that the mystery is gone. I say have multiple archs that lead to a different set of survivors by the end. It would give the game far more replayability. But its just a thought.

I would give this higher, but I know later down the line and looking back this is by no means a 9 or even 10 in terms of the game’s scope. But if the writing kept its pacing from start to finish, it would’ve matched the astonishing soundtrack, blistering court cases, impeccable murders, and superb characters. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to find myself a tissue for the tears I shed to those lost in this Killing Game.

A brave, flashy, self-destructive spectacle that made me chuckle like a madman right up to one of the best endings in the history of video games. [12/2017, p.58]

The narrative choice made is going to be massively divisive in the fan base. It's a bold choice; it's an interesting choice; it's the wrong choice. Sometimes it can be about the destination and not the journey, especially if the driver suddenly swerves into a wall.
