    Intro

Crash Bandicoot 4 sets out to reestablish the old style of Crash games while throwing out the past 21 years of subpar attempts made by other studios after the original 3 games launched. Toys for Bob, the developers behind 2018’s Spyro: Reignited Trilogy and 2011’s Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure, try their hand at continuing Crash’s legacy in a way that feels like no other game came after the 3rd installment until now. Building off Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy was a must here but since that was made by Vicarious Visions, I was a bit worried that this game might falter in a few areas, and unfortunately it does.

    Story/World Building – 3/3

If there is one area that this game excels in, it’s the amazing cartoony cut scenes. A fun story with great voice acting and entertaining visuals. Voice acting withing levels can get a bit grating if you have to repeat a level over and over but VA audio can be muted for such an occasion. For a more casual playthrough, the story makes the game all the more special even though you need to 100% the game to see every scene within the game. The story is not the primary focus but the cartoony nature of this game lends its way to an overall fun experience.

    Gameplay – 3/4

Toys for Bob make this platformer worth the full 60 dollar price tag due to the amount of content within the game. Regular levels can be replayed inverted, special optional levels with different characters, videotapes to collect, and play through. So much replay value is bundled with this game that it will easily take you 50+ hours to 106% the game and see everything. This does lead to an issue where levels can feel a bit overstuffed. Special character sections can lead to some frustration like Tawna grappling hook not locking on to an object properly or Neo Cortex missing a platform due to weird hover physics. Crash plays like his normal self, just like in the original 3 games so no complaint about him. I love that this game has high replayability but levels that have boxes that are way too hidden or have too high of difficulty spikes to 100% clear can be annoying. N. Sane Trilogy had a pretty fair balance between fun and difficultly minus a few levels but Crash 4 is easily the hard game in the series, almost to an unfair degree in the later levels. It’s still a fun Crash game but most will have a struggle getting to 106% completion due to buggy special characters and high difficulty spikes.

    Technical – 2/3

This game can be buggy at times like the aforementioned grappling hook but works most of the time when playing as Crash. The cartoony style is fully realized and makes this game look beautiful. Framerates can be an issue with some levels dropping it to as low as 20 FPS and inverted levels shooting up to 60 FPS due to minimal style filters applied to these levels. Music through is serviceable but nothing that reaches the heights of the first 3 games. Nothing too game-breaking but issues arise here and there.

    Verdict

Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time is a great first attempt for Toys for Bob. They almost stick the landing with great visuals, a fun story, and serviceable gameplay that almost reaches the heights of the originals. Difficult spikes and a few character glitches can be annoying and lead to some frustrating moments but if you’re willing to power through that, there is a lot of fun to be had.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Main complaint: yet another example of making games artificially lengthier for no reason

    Pros:
    - Crash and the new concept for masks feels fresh and overall the control is quite OK
    - The tapes concept is a good idea too
    - The game aesthetic is beautiful and keeps the bandicoot essence

    Cons:
    - Achieve 100% of the boxes is absurdly difficult. There are always a couple hidden for no reason.
    - The inverted gems is a joke to make it more replayable I guess
    - Checkpoints ubication is mostly terrible: either too close or too far
    - The levels are so large and full of meaningless dialogs.
    - Last but not least: there is absolutely no point on manually restart a level when you have checked no checkpoints for achieving the tape (0 deaths) or the 3 death gem. Your death counter increases and when you manually restart it takes around 30 seconds. Come on, I’m restarting the level, keep it in the freaking cache or something, holly molly.

The mass praise for this uninspired cash-grab is a testament to the gullibility of casual gamers and blind sheep fanboys everywhere. The mass praise for this uninspired cash-grab is a testament to the gullibility of casual gamers and blind sheep fanboys everywhere. This is just another product of the era of corporatized nostalgia we are currently living in, to compensate for a lack of need for originality in this out of control industry.

What set N. Sane Trilogy apart from all of the other corporate cash-in remakes recently is that Vicarious Visions was a studio that worked on post-Naughty Dog Crash Bandicoot titles back in the day, and they also respected the work of the original games enough (they were made in a time where making a game wasn't as simple as buying a premade sandbox from Epic Games!) to code their own engine from scratch that would suit the gameplay. This time around, the bumbling morons behind Skylanders and the disastrous Spyro Reignited Trilogy, Toys for Bob, are back to spit all over the orange marsupial's legacy.

As previously mentioned, this dumpster fire is an Unreal Engine game like 99.9% of all remakes of games that took ingenuity to make 20 years ago because it was not as simple as licensing an ugly looking, "hyper realistic" sandbox to make games back then. Because the idea for this "game" was made by not-quite-human suits who only care about brand recognition, you will be dealing with Unreal Engine's legendarily bad physics and uncanny, ugly Fortnite visuals. Ugliest visuals I have ever seen from a Crash Bandicoot game, thanks to the combined talents of Unreal Engine and the Toys for Bob art department's finest, this game looks weird, ugly, jarring even in comparison to far superior N. Sane Trilogy, and actually looks far worse than any of the Sierra-era Crash Bandicoot titles, as awful as they were.

The only people praising this awful mess are casuals who likely chose this as their first Crash Bandicoot game, blind fanboys who worship the name, and "le funny XD" memers. The franchise had a good run back in the day, but unfortunately it has become trendy to parade around Eldritch-style effigies of old gaming icons. If you have a functioning brain, you will stay as far away from this assembly line trash as possible.

The controls are so loosey-goosey and although you are given a reticle for aiming your landing, you'll still have no feeling of control with every platform jump, and no idea where you will land (even with the useless reticle). Oh, did i mention that the platform starts to crumble once you touch it AND when you go to jump to the next platform a creature is coming out between platforms to eat Crash 40% of the time. That's just level 3..what were they thinking? The game looks and feels old and it's just not fun to play. A tired and old formula that will have you wishing for each stage to end quickly. These Toys for Bob people need to play a certain plumber for awhile to learn how to manufacture games with precise controls that are a pleasure to play. This ain't one of them. Expand

First off, I do like the game; most of the platforming and level design is solid, and it keeps a lot of what made the originals great while building on it as well. But it’s easier to detail my criticisms than praise, and I need to get it off my chest. If the game was terrible then I’d just bin it, but it’s because there’s so much good there that I really want to love it, but there are just things in the way making me unable to.

The main word I would use to describe it is tedious.

This is coming from a huge Crash fan. I’ve completed Crash 1 & 2 – & 3 to a lesser extent – countless times, and it seems Crash 4 is determined to force me to do the same for it just to get 100% once. The n-verted versions of the levels are not fun in their own way and basically just force you to complete all the levels again. I lose quite a bit of enjoyment in a game I’m playing when I accept that I’m probably not going to fully complete it ever, which is something I would definitely expect from a Crash game.

Finding on my first playthrough, while getting all the boxes I see, that there are almost always 1-5 boxes missed is far from thrilling. I like collectathons, but unlike with for example Banjo or Spyro, where you can search around for those elusive notes, you have to do the whole level again just to realise (or not) that there’s a random box just out of sight. In particular, you have to do the bonuses again. I did like that lots of the bonuses are legitimately challenging and great platforming, but once you’ve cracked it once completing it again several times is just tedious.

For completion they also want you to get all the boxes on each level without dying. It’s a bit annoying having to do that in Crash 1, but the levels in this game are much longer. And it doesn’t even feel like they thought about this; there is absolutely no reason you should have to wait for a 30+ second loading screen every time you have to restart the level (even if you haven’t reached a checkpoint yet, unlike Crash 1), when it could just put you back to that start like in a time trial; given how long and difficult lots of the levels are the time trials are also a big ask.

The biggest problem I have with the actual gameplay is the depth perception, which is way worse than even Crash 1; I think this is largely due to the camera angle being too low and far back. I found myself constantly using the double jump just to hover and ensure I was going to land where I planned, which doesn’t make for fun speeding through a level. They do add the big yellow circle below Crash to allow this to be possible, but I’d say it’s a bit of an ugly fix for the problem. It meant that I enjoyed the 2D sections much more than the 3D ones, and Crash isn’t supposed to be just a 2D platformer.

Playing through I also felt the level design was lacking variety. Yet when I thought about it there’s not really more in the other games, like in Crash 2 how there’s about 10 different level types each repeated 2 or 3 times; it probably just feels that way because the consecutive levels in each world feel similar, and they just go on too long.

Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time is an incredible return to form for new Crash games. It excels in almost every area and falls flat in almost none. The visual appeal, mass amounts of content and new gameplay mechanics such as the masks can leave the player with hours upon hours of fun (and frustration), making it well worth the investment. I can only see Crash going up from here.

I spent hours playing through it’s levels even though I was absolutely crap at it back then. I personally found myself enjoying its sequels way more instead, especially the variety and challenge of the third game, Warped. As time moved on however, I became a bigger fan of Crash’s sort of half brother in Spyro the Dragon, playing through the original trilogy numerous times. But all those memories returned with the release of the Nsane Trilogy back in 2017, the folks over at Vicarious Visions did an amazing job turning the original games into modern platforming classics, just with more accurate jumping. But it’s fallen upon Toys for Bob, the folks responsible for the Spyro Trilogy remake to create the first true new Crash game in over 20 years.

This game is set right after Warped with Cortex, Uka-Uka and N. Tropy stuck for the last 20 years after their defeat, what this does is essentially retcon everything released afterwards, including Crash Bash, so nothing of value was lost. After finally opening a rift between worlds, it’s up to our heroes Crash, Coco and Aku to stop Cortex’s latest evil plan across dimensions. This time around we are also introduced to brand new Quantum Masks that will change up the gameplay in many ways.

So after going through the seventeen steps to play this game on the PS4 (Installation, Update, Install the Update, Powder its Nose, License Agreement, Waiting for the game to pick the right outfit and ask me to register an Activision Account for additional skins *pfffft*) You are presented with two playstyle options, Modern and Retro, this really just amounts to whether you want to play with lives or not. I have been on record several times that the concept of lives can go die in a fire with even long time holdouts like Mario finally at long last ditching them, I also bring up examples like the fantastic modern Rayman platformers that just have you do the most recent section if you are killed.

Speaking of which, It seems this game has taken a few of its inspirations from Rayman Legends. Not only with the new grind rail sections but you are rewarded Gems for how many Whompa fruits you get after each level. When it comes to Level design though, the Trilogy levels were great looking but restricted due to the original designs, this time around the devs have free reign over what they can do and each level is just meticulously detailed with these little extras that make them all stand out but my god can these levels can get huge. Toys for Bob certainly did their homework on how a Crash level works and the controls and camera flow incredibly smoothly, I never felt Crash wasn’t in my control with there even being a little beacon on the ground when you jump so no longer are you taking blind leaps of faith. The difficulty though is not that severe it’s like a really good curry, delicious but with just the right amount of heat. That is unless you are trying to actually complete the levels 100 %, in which case good luck getting off the toilet anytime tonight.

Getting all the boxes can be no easy task especially in Bonus stages, while they used to be fun little romps in the original games they can be incredibly unforgiving here with exact methods to get everything or be made to start over and they are made even more complex with the new masks. The Quantum Masks introduced in this game give us several new powers like stopping time, switching gravity or dimensions and a heavy-duty spin attack, instead of being able to pick them out and use them at your own free will, they appear during certain segments in levels. Crash 4 introduces us to so many new mechanics and features it is almost hard to keep track of them all

While there are certainly some complex sections, especially with Bonus Stages it is a real stretch to consider this game “hard”. We’ve gotten used to so many games hand holding us that we have become blind to any real challenge. Anything even considered hard is automatically paired with Souls or Cuphead. But anybody who is going to strive for full completion, you are certainly getting your money worth with each level having a “Twisted” version with its own set of gems to collect. Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time is an amazing addition to the series and a spectacular follow up to the Original Trilogy.

My fingers are crossed for what they do with Spyro 4

Th…there is gonna be a Spyro 4, right?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

There have been complaints of how secretive many of the crates are, and the lack of handholding, but for those who grew up in the NES era, where games didn’t apologize for being tough as nails, this will be a refreshing challenge in a sea of watered down mediocrity. Graphics - 9/10 - One of the best looking Crash Games visually.

Controls - 3/10 - The controls are just really poor and inaccurate, most noticeable when jumping, or playing as Tawna or Dingodile when trying to use their powers. The controls are clunky and way too in-precise.

Music - 5/10 - The music isn't fantastic, and nothing really memorable. Parts sound like a typical Crash game, but the vast majority is forgettable. It's not bad, just not good.

Story - 6/10 - The story is decent, but incredibly short. Has a very interesting concept but isn't really touched upon, thus leaving way too many questions for fans.

Levels - 3/10 - Unlike the original Crash games, these levels are significantly longer, with no way to ease in for newer players, you're thrown into the deep end from the get-go. The majority of the levels feel just as complex and some even significantly harder than the infamous Stormy Ascent. Stormy Ascent is easier than most of the levels in Crash 4.

Level Design - 5/10 - The actual design of the levels are quite nice, yet the flow of the levels are ruined by how much backtracking you have to do for hidden crates... and I'm not talking about just one level, it's every level, having an off-screen crate you have to either guess is there, or look up a guide.

Level Variety - 2/10 - This is where shorter levels would've been better. The length of the levels ends up cramming 3,4,5 types of typical crash levels into one, then repeating this for 3 levels in a row, making it feel like the exact same level over and over. The levels should all have been shorter but more levels overall. Just by cutting up each level into 2,3,4 individual levels.

Menu - 4/10 - The menu/Warp Screen to go level to level is the same as Crash 1, you have to walk, wait, walk, wait, to get to each level which is tedious and boring. However, you can open the options menu and select your level of choice that way, but it's never made clear

Boss Fights - 9/10 - One of the few parts I really enjoyed. The boss fights felt tough, but rewarding to complete. Constantly thinking on your toes as to what's happening next, and incredibly difficult. The dodgy controls do let the boss fights down just a tiny bit. But the boss fights should be the hardest parts of this game... the boss fights in this game however, are some of the easiest levels despite being quite difficult on their own.

Camera - 0/10 - This is getting it's own category. THE CAMERA ANGLES ON THIS GAME ARE AWFUL! You'll notice from the very start, in comparison to the original three games, this games camera is much further away from Crash, making distances harder to judge. Additionally, it randomly locks onto things in the air sometimes, meaning you cannot see whatsoever what's under you. The camera is awful.

Fun - 2/10 - This game really doesn't strike the 'fun' part for me at all. Sure, starting up the game, playing the first level, it was fun. Then you realise that it gets incredibly repetitive, lazily designed, poor controls, just an all round boring and annoying experience.

Overall - 5/10 - I'm fine with difficult games, but this game really needed to maybe take another year in development. Split those long levels up into two or three levels, fix how dodgy the controls are, and ultimately, make it FUN.

Final note. I'm beyond disappointed in this. It's the first Crash Game I have ever considered selling. I personally do not see any replay value in this game whatsoever. Sure, there's relics etc... but I'd much rather spend my time on a game made well, than this game where the devs have tried to make you fail at every step of the way.

There's nothing I would change about this game. An Incredible and true sequel to Crash Bandicoot Warped. We waited a long time for this and I am not disappointed in the slightest. It's so difficult which is what every Crash Bandicoot game should be, the level design is eye catching and engaging. There's nothing I would change about any of the mechanics whatsover. G

There is just so much content here that getting to full completion will not be easy but a lot of fun will be had along the way. Now the game isn't perfect but it is still lots of fun and my personal favourite Crash game. My only real issues would be the colour contrast in some levels isn't the best making certain things hard to see and the fact that the relics can be very hard to get for the average player but other than that the game is lots of fun. The game is certainly a challenge, but every play through of a level just makes you better and better at it to where you will eventually be able to master the whole level. I would highly recommend this game, Its awesome. Expand

Crash 4 looks absolutely stunning and every environment looks new and distinct from the others and will show set pieces that will have you in disbelief that this is a crash game. In the level offbeat many easter eggs and such can be seen on the rooftops and in the background, rewarding players with a keen eye.

This game does come with a small handful of negatives such as the framerate chugging a bit on a base PS4, and some crates being almost impossible to find unless you spin every nook and cranny of the level or give up and google it.

But other than that, this is personally the best platformer I have played within the past decade.

This game is amazing, one of the best crash games since Crash 3! Recommend heavily to anyone who loves Crash, similar games, and those who love platforms! Only issue is that the game ramps up the difficulty immediately... like level 2 immediately, one of the hardest Crash games to date; if you like a challenge like me, it should be no problem!

While I've enjoyed the game for the most part, I feel the developers really phoned it in with a lot of stuff.

Like the utter chore it can be on some levels to find every single last crate. I don't mind exploring and keeping my eyes open for visual clues or little details at the corner of the eye but some levels just went too far with hiding stuff in obscene and really cheap places and blind angles.
These are not fun to track down, they are tedious and will just force you to go through levels over and over hoping to find something new, like in Wolfenstein where you just run around and press every wall in the game hoping to find something.
I also feel its really lazy that the side casts' levels will suddenly just cut off and make you repeat a large portion of another level you've already beaten with Crash. That's just lazy padding.
And speaking of padding, making the player have to play through the very same identical level (Besides a filter and the level being mirrored) to get all the gems..... Why... Why would I want to do the exact same thing I just did but again... LIke its Ghouls'n Ghosts or something.

I think the boiling point for me was at a later stage in the game where you have to ride on a creature and get ONE shot at hitting tons of crates along the way, accompanied by the worst ever hitboxes in the world. I is infuriating to do the box challenge on this level and you better pray that you didn't miss a single other box before that point.
And if you are a mad enough person to try and attempt this while doing the Perfect No death challenge then I think I'd rather just put a gun in my mouth.

If this section had been at the start of the level, I could MAYBE have forgiven it but the fact that you first have to play through the whole level up to that last point before even getting a shot at it is inexcusably bad game design. They could have just separated the two part into two stages and the game would have been SO much better.
Oh.. what's that?... it IS in 2 part... but you just have to do that horrendous last part TWICE.
What in the world could any sane being be thinking?!

    In short
The game is fun if you are just playing through it casually but trying to complete the challenges and you'll have a miserable time.
Also, why is it that time trial challenges can be started over on a whim but restarting the actual level have to take up to 40 seconds?

I’m gonna start this review off with a bit of an anecdote: back in June of 2019, shortly after its release, I reviewed “Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled,” and in the final sentence of the review, I suggested that Activision, after two successful “Crash Bandicoot” remakes, try their hand at a new, wholly original “Crash Bandicoot” game. After all, while that game, along with the “CrashI’m gonna start this review off with a bit of an anecdote: back in June of 2019, shortly after its release, I reviewed “Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled,” and in the final sentence of the review, I suggested that Activision, after two successful “Crash Bandicoot” remakes, try their hand at a new, wholly original “Crash Bandicoot” game. After all, while that game, along with the “Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy,” were great titles, we hadn’t gotten an entirely original game in the franchise since 2008’s polarizing “Crash: Mind over Mutant.” Clearly, Activison’s studios knew what they were doing when it came to crafting faithful “Crash Bandicoot” titles, so I was more than ready to see what kind of new adventures they could take the orange marsupial in. Little did I think that just about a year later, they’d come forward and announce the next game, fittingly titled “Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time!,” and let me just say, you’re damn right it is. The second entry in the series to bear the “Crash Bandicoot 4” name in some way (after 2001’s “Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex”), this game caught my eye as soon as the previews came out, and it was one I was very much looking forward to. And let me tell you, it’s every bit as glorious as I hoped it would be.
“Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time!” brings back the classic “Crash” gameplay, and does a marvelous job of translating it to a new generation. Crash’s movement feels fluid, the platforming elements are strong as usual, and this game certainly brings the challenge. Believe me when I say, no matter whether you go for everything in the game or not, this game is going to kick your ass in more ways than one. Fortunately, though, the challenge is welcome, and even if the game gets difficult, it’s not an unfair type of difficult: it’s a test, sure, but the challenge feels smart and the level design is so brilliant, you’ll feel rewarded when you get through the levels. The game also features plenty of new content to keep things fresh, chief among them being the new masks. These masks bring new powers to Crash that allows for great new ways of platforming, and they also help the creators get even more creative and exciting with the level design. Furthermore, the addition of new types of levels, like N. Verted levels and Flashback levels are great, as are the numerous gameplay styles brought to the forefront with new playable characters, like Tawna, Dingodile, and even Neo Cortex himself. All of these characters have their own charm to them, and are an absolute blast to play. Visually, the game is beautifully designed, the environments are wonderful to look at, and the game is bursting out of the screen with colors. Beyond how wild the gameplay goes, the visual design is equally as inventive. And while the story may not be the main focus of “Crash” games, I enjoy this game’s many callbacks to Crash’s previous adventures, and I think the characters and dialogue are charming and hilarious.
I honestly can’t think of any negatives about the game that really detract from my enjoyment of it. Yes, the game is extremely challenging, but as I mentioned, it’s a welcoming challenge. It’s not packed with “fake difficulty,” it’s a game that’s smartly crafted and, as difficult as it can get, it feels rewarding when you do a great job.
Overall, “Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time!” is everything that I hoped it would be, and it’s exactly what “The Wrath of Cortex” should’ve been almost two decades ago. It’s the finest “Crash Bandicoot” game that I’ve played since “Crash Bandicoot: Warped!,” and it establishes that Crash is back and better than ever. It’s a beautiful, faithful, unforgettable adventure for the orange marsupial, and it makes me happy to see how excellent of a job Toys For Bob did with this game. It’s truly amazing, and beyond being one of the best games I’ve played this year, it’s far and away one of the best entries in this great series. I can’t wait to see where the series goes from here. Also, hey, Activision, so I’m thankful you answered my request for a new “Crash” game from the “Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled” review, and if you don’t mind, I have just one more plea for you guys. I don’t want to ask for too much, so I’ll make it quick, but…can “Spyro” be next?

It commits to a pure joy of platforming that we have rarely seen since the Super Nintendo era. I’d say the closest relative is Donkey Kong Country Returns and its sequel, and there are more than a few nods in that direction, most notably the rail grinding sections. It also reminds me of Yoshi’s Island due to its breathtaking cartoony style, its focus on collecting (red coins / boxes), and its continuous introduction (and escalation) of new mechanics throughout the game. It is an endless joy to play (and replay and replay difficult sections). It’s full of secrets, close calls, reversed/remixed levels, bonus stages, playable characters, new skins and more. It’s BETTER than the thing it’s based on which speaks to the quality of the Toys For Bob team. They analyzed exactly what a crash game should be, mechanically, visually, and took it to the next level. Granted, the PS1 had a lot more limitations those geniuses had to grapple with so we can’t hold it against them that they didn’t make a game of Crash 4’s precise quality. In fact ... Crash 4 reveals the simple beauty of their design. This feels like an evolved version of what they set out to do, and I imagine that the original Crash devs will savor (along with fans) what this team has accomplished both in homage and advancement. 11 out of 10 Expand

Extra playable characters are a wonderful addition and totally keep in line with the feel of the rest of the game. Mandatory parts of the game are a solid challenge, but the bonus stages and optional content are on another level. These segments will push your Crash platforming ability to the limits and are immensely satisfying to complete. This is a beautiful game full of personality and excellent content. This is the second attempt to create a sequel for the original Crash Bandicoot trilogy, and while Wrath of Cortex suffered from mediocre reviews, I don't think that It's About Time performed any better.

    -----

    PROS:

GRAPHICS - The game looks really good, while still maintaining the feel of the original trilogy on PS1.

LEVEL DESIGN - If you're ignoring the collectibles, the levels are laid out very well. There's a good amount of challenge, but nothing feels too difficult to overcome with some practice.

SHADOW MARKER - The new shadow underneath the characters is a welcome addition, as it aids in safely making the longer, more precise jumps.

RAIL GRINDING - While being quite challenging at times (especially when trying to collect items), the new rail grinding mechanic was fun. I enjoyed the fast-paced gameplay, and felt rewarded when I was able to get through the entire area with all the boxes.

LOYALTY - The game pays generous homage to the original trilogy throughout the level designs. It often felt like a proper sequel.

    -----

    CONS:

LONG LEVELS - The new N.Sanely Perfect Relic collectible requires you to complete the levels without dying, while also collecting all the boxes. With levels that are sometimes twice as long as in the original trilogy, and areas that rival the hardest levels in the first game, this makes collecting everything a near impossibility.

HIDDEN BOXES - Boxes are repeatedly hidden entirely out of sight, and require a multitude of replays of the already super-long levels. The original games had some hidden items and secret paths, but every level in this game has something hidden. More often than not, you'll be jumping above the top of the screen or attempting dangerous blind jumps, desperately searching for these hidden items.

PADDED GAMEPLAY - Half of the gems are obtained by re-completing every level, while also re-collecting everything, all over again. These levels are inverted (layouts are flipped horizontally), and feature different, artistic coloring effects, which can help make boxes and platforms stand out. While interesting, the game mode doesn't offer enough incentive to completely redo everything you just did, especially on the harder levels, which likely will have already given you extensive headaches.

POOR CAMERA ANGLES - The problem often shows up when you're rail grinding, but can also be a problem when trying to aim the precise jumps that are higher up. It seems the developer was trying to make these situations more difficult by doing so.

NON-EXISTENT CHARACTERS - I don't understand why they would completely exclude Tiny Tiger, who has been a main-stay henchman for Cortex since the second installment. Uka-Uka, the super-villain of Warped, is shown briefly at the beginning, but is completely forgotten about afterwards. Even Aku-Aku was used extremely sparingly, in favour of the new elemental masks.

LONG LOAD SCREENS - Normally, I'm not too bothered with loading screens, but when this game depends on perfect, no-death runs through levels, collecting everything along the way, you're going to have to restart the level over a lot. Every time you restart, it reloads the whole level, which the original PS1 games didn't even struggle with.

    -----

    TIPS:
    - I found that the game controls much better when using the D-Pad instead of the analog stick, especially when you're riding animals through the levels.
    - I would recommend leaving the side-levels (with the other playable characters) until you can do them all at once. Each character has a distinct jumping mechanic, which requires different button combinations to pull off. When you keep switching back-and-forth, you're bound to suffer multiple deaths by mixing up the controls.

    -----

Overall, I enjoyed many aspects of It's About Time, but when I'm playing a collect-a-thon, I would at least like a fighting chance to obtain everything. I've replayed Crash 2 & 3 many times, and while certain things were difficult, I never felt like it was impossible to fully complete the game.

I found the story was just okay. It kept the game moving, and made some reference to the older games, but also felt a little rushed at times. I also think it failed to properly flesh out the new elemental masks, which were a major focus of the game.

The new masks added some variability to the levels, but the game depends on them a little too much, in an effort to increase the difficulty.

I did run into some glitches/bugs, but nothing that greatly affected gameplay or ruined the experience.

While a ton of effort was clearly put in to create the very extensive levels, with beautiful and clever designs, the experience still feels very padded. I don't think this should have been a full-priced game, and most people likely won't be able to get the full value out of it. I really wanted to love this game, but it ended up being much weaker than its predecessors. Maybe pick it up when it's on sale.

Hi, first of All I played every single Crash game there is on every consoles/Handhelds (Yes, even that sh*t "Boom Bang") so I consider myself (25 years old) a Crash Veteran.

But hell even though "It is about time" is a good game, to me it doesnt feel like proper sequel crash game... first of all I love stupid childish humor, but in this game to me it seem too much childish and not funny at all... (Well there are some exceptions - Dingodile :-). The map system from frist game I was never a fan of, I much prefer Crash 2 and 3 portals system... but these are jsut minor things, what I truly hate is that the game is hard as hell (Trophies even more!) but not in a fun way like Crash 1 but realy frustrating a lot of times, my little sister couldnt even completed the second level without my help and was sad with even with my help she wasnt able to collect all the boxes ! I thought the game was made for everyone not just for hardcore gamers ?! Box placements is a joke, but a bad one, the amount of them in some levels is also crazy and box placements in those sliding sections is pure hell if you want to do the no N-Sanely Perfect no death challenge. Sound design is very bland and uninspirative, even the sound of Wumpa fruits pick up isnt what it used to be. Character designs I still dont like, but I got used to it but the whole aesthetic of the game is what bothers me a lot, the graphics are too simplistic and Fortnite-like, colors are too much saturated for my eyes (I have literally had to tune down my TV Contrast to be able to play) also the boxes lot of times just blend in with the enviroments and is much more hard to find just because of that. The level designs some are good but most of them feels too much narrow to my taste, and second routhes are sometimes also too hard to see where you can go and where you just fall to your death. The masks I actually enjoys but sometimes is the only focus of the levels, to me it feels like they tried to put so much new content that they forget about simple but well made platforming. Look in OG trilogy we got only jump/double, Crouch/slide, Spin/4xtimes (plus Wumpazooka) And everybody loved it, I still enjoyed and prefer the Trilogy over Crash 4 IAT. I hope we well get a Bash,WotC and Twinsanity Remakes from VV after this game

Terribly frustrating game design that leans on the crutch of a infinite life mechanic. Which ultimately erodes what made crash a fun and challanging game in the first place. Art is okay music is mostly remix of classic songs but used in odd ways rather than as a call back to previous games. Poor input in locations and bad signaling of game design let's it down. Summary play n sane trilogy

Awesome game! Definitely the most true to the trilogy since the trilogy itself. It's much closer in gameplay to crash 1 and 2 than 3 though, which isn't a bad thing.

Otherwise excellent game and is honestly my favorite in the series

This is a great sequel to the original series. Of course I would like something in the style of Crash bandicoot Twinsanity, but nevertheless the fourth part of Crash is great in everything. Locations, enemies, visuals in general, new gameplay, everything is fine. Perhaps the complexity of the last two islands is off scale (:

Almost every level requires a youtube tutorial to be able to find all of the boxes and hidden gems. The bonus levels are so convoluted that some of them require going back and forth over the level multiple times, dying 40+ times to try and succeed. The precision required all the time is ridiculous. The game looks great, and the new addition of the quantum masks and playing as other characters is great, but this game is too much about frustration and anger than challenging and fun.

This game costs $20 more than Crash N. Sane Trilogy. You would expect a longer campaign at that price, but it is extremely short. It only lasts for about 6 hours. The developers were too greedy and lazy to make a longer campaign. Speaking of lazy, the level design is lazily designed in this game. When I checked the back of the game case, it said you could play with 2-4 players. I was excited to play it, only to find out that this game has the most pathetic attempt at multiplayer I ever seen in my life. You can not play together at the same time. The multiplayer is just trying to beat your friend's score or time on a singleplayer level. This is false advertising. You could literally play any game and just ask a friend to beat your score/time on a level. That is not multiplayer.

Seeing how the so-called "multiplayer" isn't actually multiplayer, there is practically no multiplayer in this game. So once you beat the story, this game will go back to the shelf and collect dust. Charging $60 for a game with no replay value is a cashgrab. And they had the audacity to charge $20 more for this game than Crash N. Sane Trilogy, even though the latter is 2-3 times longer. I recommend you wait until this game is free on PS Plus.

Onto the game itself, in my opinion, a good comeback for crash level design is pretty challenging. The devs don't mindlessly nitro spam to "add difficulty" like traveler's tales did with Wrath of Cortex. The masks feel pretty well done. Love the mask that lets you form and reform platforms. That one imo is the hardest mask to use but at the same time fun. Crash controls fine just the weight of his jumps are kinda heavy just like in N Sane Trilogy. But overall not supper sluggish like his movements in again Wrath of Cortex. Death routes make a return in the form of these flashback tapes. The designs of the death routes are similar to Crash 1's Brio segments. So the new playable characters Dingodile, Twana are pretty nice and control well but Cortex is just awful. Imagine a **** version of how Cortex controlled in Crash Twinsanity with a tiny hop of a jump without any double-jump but with a gun that can make platforms. Probably my biggest issue is Cortex and the music in the game. The music is just...average, not as good as the original trilogy but better than the music in Travelers Tales and Radical Entertainments games. Lets just hope Toys For Bob and Vicarious Visions can keep this up and improve. Expand

Crash Bandicoot 4 is breathtakingly beautiful, features an amazing soundtrack full of references to the original trilogy, offers tons of content, and thrilled me to bits with its brilliant level design. Crash Bandicoot 4 is a worthy addition to the Crash legacy. It captures the spirit, fun, and challenge of the original games, and adds a lot more that genuinely makes the experience even better rather than simply padding out the gameplay. The game is certainly challenging and the levels could probably use a few more checkpoints, but the number in the game is truer to the spirit of the originals than modern gaming standards. A little perseverance will get you through the game, but it’s going to take a little work if you want to be a Crash completionist. Overall it’s a great platform game that perfectly blends the old and the new into a fun new experience.
