    I dont get how anybody likes this so much yeah it has some fun stuff to it but its not at all like classic crash games takes everything that made those games good and throws it into the trash can making it one of the most generic and boring platformers i ve played in a while wow

    Lo abandoné porque no creo que esté a la altura de la trilogía original. Si bien es cierto que el esfuerzo y dedicación del equipo de desarrollo se nota y se agradece, el juego es demasiado complicado e injusto, destacando algunos niveles que por culpa de las nuevas máscaras se hace muy frustrante.

    It can almost be said that this game is one of the hardest crash bandicoot made.
    For this reason, I give yellow points because there are much better games and compared to them, this game cannot receive green points from me.

    I love the Crash series and this started good too but I almost hate the game to the end due to the track design. The boss battles were great as usual, but f.e. in the last stage before the last boss I died 91 times. In the last 3 dimensions my average death rate was 25-30 times, I was very very frustrating. The mask design is epic but to the end it was too much for me.

My issues with Crash however stopped me from seeing the game as the energetic, yet simple adventure that others seemed to view it as. In an attempt to play it safe and provide a formulaic yet definitive crashCrash Bandicoot 4 was a thank-you to both retro and newer fans alike. The amount of content it shows for those who care to look for it is something I wish we saw more in video games. My issues with Crash however stopped me from seeing the game as the energetic, yet simple adventure that others seemed to view it as. In an attempt to play it safe and provide a formulaic yet definitive crash experience for all to enjoy, it failed to grab me at any moment with its stages or story.
    Although pretty, levels rarely ever contain something to genuinely impress me. More than anything it can feel like an obstacle course that's gratifying in small doses but generally either frustrates me or made me feel nothing. As I pushed through the story hoping for an instance I can experience some classic video game enjoyment but the moment never came. The levels' low connection to the story made the problem of the game feeling like a checklist more apparent, which would be ok if the experience was more rewarding.
    Overall, not for me. The game no doubt had effort and love put in with good intentions but its hassle-like gameplay and low reward for input made me put it down after hours of trying to grab its hook.    … Expand

    Unfortunately though, the game plays just like the older games, it's outdated and has some rough edges regarding the gameplay.
    It's not bad by any means, infact it's quite enjoyable, and there are some additional new gameplay mechanics, but it does nothing new, and nothing about it is special. The Quantum Masks are    A decent attempt to bring Crash Bandicoot back for another adventure.

    It's not bad by any means, infact it's quite enjoyable, and there are some additional new gameplay mechanics, but it does nothing new, and nothing about it is special.

    The Quantum Masks are very creative, each one of them has its own unique ability, and they're very fun to use.

    The multiple playable characters are all great, Tawna is by far the best character, she has the best levels, her moveset is very smooth and her tools are well implemented. Dingodile is fun aswell, being able to shoot things and fly feels good.

    Most levels are fine, but some of them are just straight up frustrating, mechanics not working correctly, movement being clunky, weird hitboxes and just overall unfair.

    The boss fights are... whatever, some of them are lame while others are artificially difficult, what a letdown.

    And finally I just want to talk a little bit about the new art style, long story short, it's ugly, the animations are awkward, and most characters look off (there are some exceptions though, personally I think the new Tawna looks fantastic and pretty badass).

    This one is a weird case, I like Crash Bandicoot, but the gameplay was cool many years ago, now it's just not on par with other modern platformers, it feels and plays the same after all these years.

    Also, no split-screen couch co-op? No actual multiplayer? Really?
    Well, that was disappointing.

    Really toxic game. Its very colorful ok nice visuals but why they make it evil difficult? They lost the fun part of the game.. U need to put a lots of effort to just finish the stages later on in the game. If u want to take all gems and the runs u must spit real blood on gamepad. Realy why?? For what reason? I am very disappointed......

No longer is it about making it through difficult passages by the skin of your teeth and feeling a sense of accomplishment instead it's memorizing long sections that are taught to you through death and frustration.     This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Its About Time, sin duda alguna, es un buen juego. Sin embargo, para ser la cuarta entrega canónica luego de mucho tiempo, deja bastante que desear, a tal punto que al menos para mi, no considero que este a la altura. Hablemos del diseño de niveles, estos son bastante creativos la verdad, y es de los puntos mas fuertes del juego. Las mascaras cuanticas tambien ayudan bastante a esto, al menos en algunas ocasiones, ya que en otros niveles alentan bastante la experiencia y honestamente prefiero mucho mas los poderes del Warped. Tambien mascaras como Ika Ika a veces se bugean pero son raras las ocasiones.
    En cuanto a los jefes creo que fueron muy decepcionantes (salvo N Gin), junto con la historia, misma que contradice o no explica muchos elementos de la trilogia original, asi como no explotar nada de los viajes interdimensionales quedandose muy a medias en este sentido. La historia parecio hecha a las apuradas, y si bien en cierta parte "Crash nunca se caracterizo por tener una gran importancia en la historia", minimamente hubieran aclarado los huecos que habia dejado ND como que habia pasado con la Tawna original, o la historia de Aku Aku y Uka Uka, en lugar de dejar mas dudas y preguntas. Los nuevos personajes parecieron metidos con calzador, y no aportan nada a la trama, lo mismo con personajes como Dingodile, que podran ser divertidos y lo que quieran pero no aportan nada. De hecho, otra vez tenemos el problema de los juegos de PS2. Ridiculizan bastante a los personajes. La tetralogia original nunca fue de humor absurdo, de hecho, siempre iban al grano en la gran mayoria de ocasiones. El humor era algo mucho mas sutil dado en muy pocas ocasiones como las animaciones de algunos personajes y ya. Para ser una secuela de Warped, este cambio de tono estilo Twinsanity no cuadra para nada. Y el humor en si... juzgandolo como tal... es muy malo, yo soy un cinefilo y puedo decir que practicamente copiaron y pegaron las mismas bromas de malas peliculas y series de animacion en Crash 4. Incluso juegos como Twinsanity tienen mejor comedia! Y eso es mucho decir la verdad... Y el final es super anticlimatico y no aporta nada, todas las escenas de Cortex y Tawna se sienten muy forzadas. Hubiera preferido una historia mas sencilla que funcionara, con conceptos interesantes de transfondo como en la tetralogia, mas que una historia que aspirara a demasiado, pero que al final les saliera muy mal.
    Y ahora siguiendo con la jugabilidad, este juego es muy dificil, demasiado. Cosa que no seria malo si no fuera por las buenas razones, ya que el juego tiene problemas de perspectiva y los controles suelen ser bastante torpes a la hora de aterrizar o saltar. Y el 106%... Madre mia. Facilmente el Crash mas dificil jamas hecho. Y esto es generalmente por mal diseño. Muchas de las cajas suelen estar en lugares demasiado ocultos, los niveles de vehículos tienen controles muy cuestionables (incluso peores que los del WOC), ademas de exigirte demasiado ya sea con las reliquias de platino o las n sanamente perfectas, sumado a la perspectiva que es muy mala la verdad lo que te provocara muertes injustas en varias ocasiones. La complejizacion de los niveles sin mejorar la jugabilidad base hizo que en parte Crash 4 se sienta mas torpe de jugar. Porque claro, tener una camara fija en un mundo mas abierto no ayuda para nada... Y no, ignorar el contenido secundario solo porque "no me gusta", no quitara que este mal diseñado, ademas de que es obligatorio para conseguir el final verdadero por lo que sigue siendo obligatorio conseguirlo. La trilogía original nunca fue tan difícil al contrario de lo que se suele creer! ND quito Stormy Ascent del primer Crash por ser demasiado dificil ademas de reducir bastante la dificultad en general y el diseño complicado en Crash 2 y 3, asi que porque hacer Crash 4 tan dificil y encima injusto? Pareciera mas una flanderizacion de los anteriores juegos.
    Y hablando de cosas mas menores, la banda sonora y el multijugador... son horribles, asi de simple.
    Crash 4 no es malo, pero carece de la simplicidad y accesibilidad que hacían a los juegos originales tan buenos incluso ahora y ademas de no innovar tanto jugable como gráficamente (porque seamos honestos, Crash 4 no innova en nada, recicla muchas ideas de anteriores entregas, y esta lejos de verse como un juego nextgen). En general considero que es muy decepcionante, siendo una experiencia soporifera que se vuelve monotona rapidamente, sintiendose como un plataformero genérico en puntos, estando muy por debajo de la magnificencia de los juegos originales, o incluso del entretenimiento mixto pero variado que ofrecían los juegos de la era de PS2/GBA entre ellos el Crash Bandicoot 4 original, por mucho que eso pueda ofender a algunos. Se nota que Toys For Bob no entendió que hizo a la saga grande en un principio, y quedaba claro que esta tarea de hacer una secuela de un juego prácticamente considerado excelente les quedaba demasiado grande.     Don't get me wrong, I loved the game as a casual runner. But a when you decide to get the optional routes, which is the path of every single Crash game. It's the worst to complete. I think Toys For Bobs would have the more time and money if they:

    1. Remove the N. Verted stages so that you'll won't have to replay the entire game again, but with a different art style and a mirror mode.    Don't get me wrong, I loved the game as a casual runner. But a when you decide to get the optional routes, which is the path of every single Crash game. It's the worst to complete. I think Toys For Bobs would have the more time and money if they:

    1. Remove the N. Verted stages so that you'll won't have to replay the entire game again, but with a different art style and a mirror mode.

    2. The Second half of the alternate character stages so that you won't retread the same level you did over 20 minutes ago.

    3. Remove the Three Lives or Less Gem to save you another level replay.

    4. The Flashback tapes because of it's higher difficulty.

    5. The N. Sanely Relics because the levels aren't made for this relic.    … Expand

The new masks, The new characters (minus one), the rewind tapes, and the gem criteria were all good additions to the game. The one big problem I had with the game was it was very overwhelming. Add in the fact that you had to play some of those levels as Dr. Neo Cortex (worst playable character in the game). the game also seems to need some more work done to it. After a gravity section, I jumped on a trampoline box and I ended up dying because I jumped too high. another time, I slid off a TNT box to get to another box below it and as soon as the slide was done, the game says I fell into a pit. I would consider this the third-best game in the series, but not the best.… Expand

    Don't waste your time trying to 100% this game. Just play it normally without worrying about collecting all the boxes or gems. The gameplay is fine I guess. Some parts can get frustratingly insensitive. For a basic platformer it is ok. Also don't expect anything from the story or characters, it is very basic and cliche; I'd say skip everything and jump to the gameplay.

    Puzzles are often overtuned for 'perfection' which will require the player's suicide often if they miss something for completion, which combined with the unfamiliar quantum mask mechanics does slow the pacing to a crawl very often. Movement is okay. Crash is heavy and slide jumping doesn't provide extra speed like the originals, but gravity is spot-on (and crates don't slide past Crash's body when they should break, which is nice).

    Sound design: The game's strongest aspect if I'm honest. Best in class (especially those armored crate shattering sounds...) The SFX are grade-A, but the music is not. Very forgettable tunes this time around.

    - Story: The plot and premise are very strong which I think sets an unrealistic precedent for Toys for Bob who are very new to Crash, when tasked with writing the Bandicoot's next adventure.

    It takes a while to get going but it's fine for a story to be a late bloomer. The climax of the game is handled beautifully I think, with absolutely absurd setpieces and level designs popping up, and the return to normalcy and nostalgia at the end to reign in all the insanity was masterful and shows great restraint. Excellent structure.

    The character writing is very poor, however. If you bought this game expecting Crash Bandicoot's usual comedic edge, you will be sorely dissappointed. This game is not funny. In fact, the characters are dry and morose. Everyone acts distant towards Crash who should be the star of the show. He ends up feeling more like a leper. Coco doesn't entertain her brother's antics and prefers to be above them, and she doesn't laugh at his jokes. They don't have the same bond as before. Tawna and Crash aren't shown to have a bond either and i think this was even MORE important to highlight as their first new adventure. He's just left in his own little box, and is ignored by everyone except Cortex, who he hugs near the end... which he has good reason for doing, honestly it's very sad.

    Fans will notice just how many villains are missing in this adventure, mainly Tiny who was present in the Timetwister during Crash 3, and his absence is felt in every cutscene as we see Dingodile roam freely. Many will also cite Uka Uka's disappearance early in the story as a negative, but I think it's pivotal in keeping Cortex and N. Tropy's performances front and center, and their motivations pure, and they do not disappoint. Dingodile doesn't either.

    However there are quite a few things about this new Tawna that do, and I must address them more because the game simply doesn't...
    This was a golden opportunity to establish how disenfranchised Tawna is as a character, and the story doesn't address her lack of screentime with the cast prior. It treats her like she was always there and... most fans know she wasn't. Tawna wasn't always there. We don't 'know' who Tawna is, actually and never have. It's very tonedeaf. Here however, she's stubborn, brooding, and realistic looking. She feels very foreign, at the beginning, and STILL feels very foreign at the end, which I don't think was the intended effect. This character internalizes the rejection and shame that Tawna from before should, and I think that shows history there, but she's clearly NOT the Tawna from before, and it doesn't feel appropriate here. This doesn't 'feel' like Tawna, and her performance wasn't terribly likable either.

    This game is an easy 8 or 9 out of 10, were it not for the shortcomings with the cast and puzzles, but I think it's solid for Toys for Bob's first attempt.    … Expand

    If you were looking for the family friendly nice game of old Crash, this is not it.
    Im shocked to sit playing a crash game and just thinking that its really not very good. The challenge level has flown well above what the previous games had, and not in a good way.

    One of the staples of the old games was the triple Aku Aku mask.
    Im not even sure it still exists. It would be useless if it does because its rare to see enemies in your path.

Some levels required extensive trial and error but overall you knew what you had to do and you enjoyed every part of the grinding process. In Crash 4, there's simply so much to do that you can quickly get distracted. NVerted mode, which is a fancy way of saying that you're playing the same levels in a mirror mode, feels bloated and old. The extra characters bring enjoyment but the fact that you can only use them on certain levels seems rather restrictive. The main story is easy, but 100% completion seems impossible if you want to keep your sanity. Getting all crates at most levels is unnecessarily hard. It like playing a Dark Souls version of Crash. Also getting the colored gems required for accessing bonus platforms is laughable. It's not about skill, it;s about luck or getting in the level designer's mind. Flashback tapes are way better if you want a reasonable challenge reminiscent of the past    … Expand

    The original crash trilogy were master crafted platformers (besides crash 3 was a bit on the weak side). Crash 4 is not, it's a pretty strange platformer. More like a puzzle flavored platformer rather than a fluid platformer like the original trilogy. And what I mean by that is sometimes you have to stop moving to examine an area and think about the abilities you'll need to use to progress. One character is so poorly designed that you actually have to suicide if you moved forward without using the right ability. There's several characters to play with, some of them you will hate playing with, others you will enjoy. I'll give credit where credit is due. Boss fights are actually really fun in this game, better than any other crash. But overall it's just a weaker platformer than the original trilogy. I'd still recommend it. It's worth playing, it just doesn't feel like a true successor to the crash series. They nailed the aesthetics but not the gameplay.    … Expand

    The game is good but too many mechanics are awful. Finishing the levels without dying, and also having to take all the crates is sometimes really impossible. The crates are often too many and too hidden, reaching the end of the level with 599 crates out of 600 and missing one that was off the screen is unnerving

    No hay enemigos (jefes) nuevos, puro reciclaje. No hay mucha variedad en los tipos de niveles. No hay realmente una propuesta nueva ni interés por evolucionar la fórmula.

    Las máscaras y sus mecánicas nuevas estás muy vistas y algunas no funcionan tan bien como otras.

    No le veo sentido a dividir tanto las gemas de las cajas en los niveles.

    Los niveles invertidos están bien, pero sus filtros son meramente anecdóticos y es una menera bastante artificial de meter más contenido.

    Los demás personajes jugables tampoco son tan satisfactorios de controlar. Excepto Dingodile, ese personaje es la mejor novedad del título.

    En fin, Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time es un título que está bien, pero si realmente apreciabas lo que Naugty Dog creó con Crash Bandicoot, esto te parecerá un intento muy tibio por replicar la fórmula.    … Expand

    Playing through this game has led to some mixed impressions on my part. Let me start off by saying that the "E 10+" rating is somewhat deceptive. While I'm only an average Crash player this game is pretty difficult even for someone like me who has played Crash since Warped. At one point Dingodile says the word "bastards". That made me chuckle for awhile. I just wanted to include those two things for any parents of young children who are reading this review. The game might not necessarily be a good introduction to Crash for them. Anyways on to the main review.

    1) Plot - Yeah it's a Crash game. Stop Cortex from taking over the universe yada yada yada. You know the drill at this point. I love Crash games but let's face it - If you want a game with a plot you're playing the wrong series. And that's fine because Crash is about fun and has always had a loose plot.

    2) Graphics/playable characters - Very good and immersive graphics. The prehistoric levels are probably my favorite in this game and in my view some of the best in the series. The redesign of Crash and Tawna annoyed me a bit but it's nothing too major in my view. Overall beautiful graphics and fun to look at. You get to play as Crash, Coco, Dingodile, Tawna and even Cortex which is enjoyable.

    3) Soundtrack - Not a lot to say here. Pretty average honestly. The N-Gin fight and a couple of others are memorable enough. But mostly just average or forgettable.

    4) Difficulty - Oh boy here we go. This is going to take awhile. A game like Crash 1 is a good measuring stick as it's difficult but fair. Crash 2 is easier but not too easy and probably the best difficulty in the series in my opinion. Crash 3 (Warped) is my favorite Crash game but it is definitely the easiest of the three originals. I like challenge in my games but Crash 4 is over the top difficult just to complete the story. The later levels, especially Cortex's Castle, are not enjoyable in the difficulty. The levels are too long and have too many boxes that are hidden in dumb places. That's okay occasionally but not all the time and should be reserved for hidden gems. It honestly feels like some of the levels were designed by fans to make the game as frustrating as possible rather than by professional developers. I have no desire to go back and try for 105% (or whatever percent it is) with this game. In comparison the original games and the N-Sane trilogy make me want to go back for more.

    4a) Difficulty - Adding to that, the game includes a death counter instead of the traditional lives system. (This can be switched back and forth) The reason for the death counter is because you WILL die. And die a lot. The fact that the death counter is even included is a red flag for me as it seems the game is difficult just for the sake of being difficult. The maps seem crowded for the sake of being crowded a lot of the time. Crash 1 is somewhat difficult but the difficulty is fair. It seems like Toys for Bob took the whole "dark souls" comparison to heart and made this game as hard as they could. To me that's just not all that enjoyable. The game is still fun at times but too often it's just frustrating in ways that not even Crash 1 can compare. Crash 1's difficulty is challenging but does not take away from the fun of the game for me. Crash 4 does take away some of the fun. Crash 4 is still a decent game and I don't wish to bash it. But with the difficulty, some of the level designs and overall frustration it is not as good as it could be.

    5) Mechanics - Some flaws here as well. The mask powers are interesting, but they are frustrating and clunky at times. (Gravity and Spinning masks) The spinning mask has no reason to exist anyways. Why was this even included when we could have just kept the double jump followed by the death tornado spin (now removed) to clear long jumps? In this instance the old system was much better and less tedious. Also the parts of the game where you climb on the sides of walls is incredibly clunky and frustrating. I don't know how many deaths I had falling off the walls that shouldn't have been deaths. It was a lot. The Crash Dash mechanic was also removed in favor of fast spinning. Why? I don't know. Some of the platforming is also quite tedious when it doesn't need to be.

    6) Humor - Crash games generally have some humor. This one is no different. Even being older now some of the jokes made me smile. It's nice to have a game with humor that both kids and adults can enjoy.

    TLDR Conclusion - A sometimes fun game that is weighed down by its frustrating difficulty and mechanics. I would only recommend it for long time Crash fans. If you're new to the franchise just play the N-Sane trilogy instead. You'll be happy you did.    … Expand

The main issue is the godawful camera positioning and weird non-orthogonal paths which make you die over and over just because you missed that 1 pixel edge, or 1 ms of directional input. You have to be impossibly precise to not die.
    The second pain point is level length and box placement. The game is not designed with smart, fun puzzles like the trilogy. It uses cheap camera tricks in levels with 300-500 **** boxes. It's frustrating as hell. And platinum? I'd say impossible. This game does not reward you for the time invested. And that's coming from someone who platinumed Demon's Souls.    … Expand

    Hugely disappointing reentry into the series. I play Crash because it is simple and enjoyable, this game is anything but. The length of the levels were horrible, the amount of collectibles you had to get in each level to complete it 100% was extremely frustrating.     Although I obtained the platinum trophy in my PS4 version (along with the other 4 platinum trophies in the rest of Crash games), I must admit that the difficulty level in this game is ridiculously high. It's less about challenging and evolving your skills and more to do with can you get through the boredom of playing the first bit of the level again. Not rewarding, not enjoyable. There's also way too much padding. Playing the same level over and over again for different gems or with a different look is not extra content. And it’s crazy how simple it would’ve been to make me love it. Throw out the stupid inverted levels, make relic requirements to only need gold or even just regular relic, and get rid of the n sanely perfect relics and you have yourself an amazing game I would’ve recommended to anyone and everyone. Although a great game if you are just going for the casual play through. if you are like me and many other people you ply crash games to 100% and this game is one of the worst games to 100%. The level design is amazing the music is very good, I wouldn’t say it’s better than the original trilogy but it’s still good music. But the difficulty spike when you are going a complete play through is absurd and unreasonable. Having to get platinum on the time trails is next to impossible. I found myself getting gold on the time trails and still having to improve by 30 seconds to get to platinum! The amount of time you will have to replay the same level over and over is ridiculous all so you get get all 6 gems per level. And once you done with that Once you have gotten all the gems in every level you then have to once again replay the same levels over again in the new mode called N.Verted mode. In this mode you play through the exact same levels you just played 6-8 times each again but the level has a twist to it but that twist does not warrant playing 6-8 times again to get the 6 gems AGAIN. The placement of the boxes in this game is almost just a betting game to know where they are. Most of the time it’s in spots that you would never even see even if you move the camera. Once again to do not hate this game I think this game is great but the amount of requirements it takes to fully complete this game is way too much… Expand

    I also like the remake, but after finished crash bandicot 4 i need to say that all the Magic is gone, i complete all the old games more than a 100% but in crash 4 i feel i was getting bored and bored level after level... all the gem sistem the add is awful for me and i immediately sold the game after the normal end.     I'm a completionist and this game is too hard all the time. When i finished my initial playthrough and saw some of the levels i would have to get all boxes on i didn't want to. The vehicles handle horribly, especially the polar bear and part of it might be its' tiny hitbox to get all boxes.
    I tried going through the game without walkthrough and everytime i see one or two boxes missing my initial excitements turns a little sourer. Was it really necessary to hide one or two boxes so well? It's not fun.
    Overall, i would say that if you want to go through casually, it's an amazing experience. If you're a completionist then you better have a patience of a saint and be godlike at the game or you're going to suffer.    … Expand

    I was pleasantly surprised when playing this game. I am a big fan of the series and this game fits nicely with the others. It's extremely difficult, but that's to be expected. It looks and plays very well too. Fans should be ecstatic to play this one, it really shocked me in the best way possible. I'd say it's a must-buy for any platformer fan.

    I started out loving crash, the initial challenge, the beautifully crafted levels, the nostalga of going through each level trying to break all of the boxes, getting to play with my girlfriend, I loved it.. but the glaring problems crash 4 possesses, stop it from ultimately hitting that definitive, wow.. this is a great game…
    For starters the structure here with the gems, you have a challenges of collect this many wumpa fruit, collect all the boxes, find the hidden gem, get through the level only dying this many times… all of this is great.. I love adding more challenge to levels, giving replayablity incentive.. but how these gems are handled is what tarnished this system.. they are for skins… but rather than getting as many gems as you can in a level to save them up for your favorite skins.. the game forces you to do every or near every challenge in a level to unlock its skin… and because of this I didn’t even bother… one of the main hooks of a crash bandicoot game for me, is its collectables aspect, breaking all of the boxes, searching for its hidden gem.. but if I miss one cheap box on a rail section im automatically disqualified from unlocking that levels skin unless I want to replay the whole level again.. a major respect of my time and effort.. there is literally no incentive to do anything but get to the finish line with a sytem like this… especially now that lives are no longer a thing… as crash 4 is more designed to be trial and error, bang your head against the wall difficulty that just stops being fun a little more than halfway through this 9 hour game… I don’t find annoying im going to try and kill you every step you take luck based obstacles to be fun, and this is all crash 4 ends up being by its end.. from a fun collectathon to straight up frustration and levels that eventually just become so dull and drag on forever… thanlfully Crash 4 is more good than bad.. it is full of so much content, new characters and bonus levels, again, so many skins to unlock if you care to take on its challenges… I just would’ve personally liked a more friendly approach to the gem system, turn it into currency rather than progress, so that someone like me and really anyone with not a whole lot of time on their hands can enjoy that aspect of at least trying to break all of the boxes and grab all of the fruit, because once you miss one box or you die right before a checkpoint after a long slog, you just don’t want to do it.. you don’t care about the boxes and exploring… this killed part of what makes crash bandicoot so special…
    but this is a special game, in fact while it has no memorable moments or levels like the previous games do..i believe crash 4 is the best game in the series… so much great foundation with the multiple masks adding new elements such as gravity or appearing and disappearing platforms, new characters with their own play styles… just work on the pacing. Let me breathe a little in between the constant im gonna kill you obstacles..give me incentive to collect even with a time crunch life.. and maybe. Just maybe.. crash bandicoot 5 can be this first great game in the series…

    Crash Bandicoot was my very first franchise back in the PS1 days, and to this day stil remains one of my favorites. This game really captures the essence of Crash Bandicoot games and upgrades it with new game mechanics and new playable characters, a nice story and music, that is if you play the game normally.

    If you try to get the Platinum Trophy by getting all of the achievements then    Crash Bandicoot was my very first franchise back in the PS1 days, and to this day stil remains one of my favorites. This game really captures the essence of Crash Bandicoot games and upgrades it with new game mechanics and new playable characters, a nice story and music, that is if you play the game normally.

    If you try to get the Platinum Trophy by getting all of the achievements then the picture changes and not for the better. At least until patch 1.04, my now concluded Platinum journey was filled with bugs and glitches that range from: boxes not spawning, enemies not spawning, inputs not registering and the camera getting stuck. To be honest the only reason i actually got the Platinum was because of my stubborness, but it was an excruciating journey. Of the top of my head levels like Run It Bayou, Rock Blocked, Toxic Tunnels, Bears Repeating are just a few of the ones that actually broke me. For you need the platinum relics and the N.sane perfect relics (get all boxes without dying once) which are incredibly hard to get. So if you are asking an insurmountable task from your players, the least you can do is to make sure your game runs prestinely. Because dying in the final jump of a level that you have been griding for hours just because the double jump didnt register is maddening, and it happened more than a couple of times.

    So next time i probably wont platinum the game and get less from the expirience, it really hurt what could have been a 9/10 game.    … Expand

Level design was decent. The new playable characters did not sit well with me. They gave us dingodile and Tawna, both were pretty mediocre. I didn’t understand why they were even there. I appreciate the efforts in making characters like Tawna more active and relevant to the game/story (as shown by the trailers) but to make her design to be a more Mad Max style of a look doesn't feel like crash. It reminds me of how the audience looked at Crash Bandicoot characters after the Twinsanity/Tag Team Racing games. Overall to summarize, I'm going to simply say the gameplay could be a lot more fluid and have a more free like feeling as well as the redesigns not looking to well but it's nice to at least see an effort by Activision to reboot the series but at the same time continue on from Warped. Since the ps3 era, I've been hoping to see a new Crash game but was a little let down at this one. Fortunately seeing what Naughty Dog did to The Last of Us franchise, I'm glad it's no longer in their hands but I think Vicarious Visions should have been the one to create a new game/story instead of Toys for Bob… Expand

If the game was terrible then I’d just bin it, but it’s because there’s so much good there that I really want to love it, but there are just things in the way making me unable to.

    The main word I would use to describe it is tedious.

    This is coming from a huge Crash fan. I’ve completed Crash 1 & 2 – & 3 to a lesser extent – countless times, and it seems Crash 4 is determined to force me to do the same for it just to get 100% once. The n-verted versions of the levels are not fun in their own way and basically just force you to complete all the levels again. I lose quite a bit of enjoyment in a game I’m playing when I accept that I’m probably not going to fully complete it ever, which is something I would definitely expect from a Crash game.

    Finding on my first playthrough, while getting all the boxes I see, that there are almost always 1-5 boxes missed is far from thrilling. I like collectathons, but unlike with for example Banjo or Spyro, where you can search around for those elusive notes, you have to do the whole level again just to realise (or not) that there’s a random box just out of sight. In particular, you have to do the bonuses again. I did like that lots of the bonuses are legitimately challenging and great platforming, but once you’ve cracked it once completing it again several times is just tedious.

    For completion they also want you to get all the boxes on each level without dying. It’s a bit annoying having to do that in Crash 1, but the levels in this game are much longer. And it doesn’t even feel like they thought about this; there is absolutely no reason you should have to wait for a 30+ second loading screen every time you have to restart the level (even if you haven’t reached a checkpoint yet, unlike Crash 1), when it could just put you back to that start like in a time trial; given how long and difficult lots of the levels are the time trials are also a big ask.

    The biggest problem I have with the actual gameplay is the depth perception, which is way worse than even Crash 1; I think this is largely due to the camera angle being too low and far back. I found myself constantly using the double jump just to hover and ensure I was going to land where I planned, which doesn’t make for fun speeding through a level. They do add the big yellow circle below Crash to allow this to be possible, but I’d say it’s a bit of an ugly fix for the problem. It meant that I enjoyed the 2D sections much more than the 3D ones, and Crash isn’t supposed to be just a 2D platformer.

    Playing through I also felt the level design was lacking variety. Yet when I thought about it there’s not really more in the other games, like in Crash 2 how there’s about 10 different level types each repeated 2 or 3 times; it probably just feels that way because the consecutive levels in each world feel similar, and they just go on too long.    … Expand

    I have completed this game, here are my thoughts, and I will keep it short and easy to read.

    Graphics - 9/10 - One of the best looking Crash Games visually. Controls - 3/10 - The controls are just really poor and inaccurate, most noticeable when jumping, or playing as Tawna or Dingodile when trying to use their powers. The controls are clunky and way too in-precise. Music - 5/10 -    I have completed this game, here are my thoughts, and I will keep it short and easy to read.

    Music - 5/10 - The music isn't fantastic, and nothing really memorable. Parts sound like a typical Crash game, but the vast majority is forgettable. It's not bad, just not good.

    Story - 6/10 - The story is decent, but incredibly short. Has a very interesting concept but isn't really touched upon, thus leaving way too many questions for fans.

    Levels - 3/10 - Unlike the original Crash games, these levels are significantly longer, with no way to ease in for newer players, you're thrown into the deep end from the get-go. The majority of the levels feel just as complex and some even significantly harder than the infamous Stormy Ascent. Stormy Ascent is easier than most of the levels in Crash 4.

    Level Design - 5/10 - The actual design of the levels are quite nice, yet the flow of the levels are ruined by how much backtracking you have to do for hidden crates... and I'm not talking about just one level, it's every level, having an off-screen crate you have to either guess is there, or look up a guide.

    Level Variety - 2/10 - This is where shorter levels would've been better. The length of the levels ends up cramming 3,4,5 types of typical crash levels into one, then repeating this for 3 levels in a row, making it feel like the exact same level over and over. The levels should all have been shorter but more levels overall. Just by cutting up each level into 2,3,4 individual levels.

    Menu - 4/10 - The menu/Warp Screen to go level to level is the same as Crash 1, you have to walk, wait, walk, wait, to get to each level which is tedious and boring. However, you can open the options menu and select your level of choice that way, but it's never made clear

    Boss Fights - 9/10 - One of the few parts I really enjoyed. The boss fights felt tough, but rewarding to complete. Constantly thinking on your toes as to what's happening next, and incredibly difficult. The dodgy controls do let the boss fights down just a tiny bit. But the boss fights should be the hardest parts of this game... the boss fights in this game however, are some of the easiest levels despite being quite difficult on their own.

    Camera - 0/10 - This is getting it's own category. THE CAMERA ANGLES ON THIS GAME ARE AWFUL! You'll notice from the very start, in comparison to the original three games, this games camera is much further away from Crash, making distances harder to judge. Additionally, it randomly locks onto things in the air sometimes, meaning you cannot see whatsoever what's under you. The camera is awful.

    Fun - 2/10 - This game really doesn't strike the 'fun' part for me at all. Sure, starting up the game, playing the first level, it was fun. Then you realise that it gets incredibly repetitive, lazily designed, poor controls, just an all round boring and annoying experience.

    Overall - 5/10 - I'm fine with difficult games, but this game really needed to maybe take another year in development. Split those long levels up into two or three levels, fix how dodgy the controls are, and ultimately, make it FUN.

    Final note. I'm beyond disappointed in this. It's the first Crash Game I have ever considered selling. I personally do not see any replay value in this game whatsoever. Sure, there's relics etc... but I'd much rather spend my time on a game made well, than this game where the devs have tried to make you fail at every step of the way.    … Expand

    While I've enjoyed the game for the most part, I feel the developers really phoned it in with a lot of stuff. Like the utter chore it can be on some levels to find every single last crate.     These are not fun to track down, they are tedious and will just force you to go through levels over and over hoping to find something new, like in Wolfenstein where you just run around and press every wall in the game hoping to find something.
    I also feel its really lazy that the side casts' levels will suddenly just cut off and make you repeat a large portion of another level you've already beaten with Crash. That's just lazy padding.
    And speaking of padding, making the player have to play through the very same identical level (Besides a filter and the level being mirrored) to get all the gems..... Why... Why would I want to do the exact same thing I just did but again... LIke its Ghouls'n Ghosts or something.

    I think the boiling point for me was at a later stage in the game where you have to ride on a creature and get ONE shot at hitting tons of crates along the way, accompanied by the worst ever hitboxes in the world. I is infuriating to do the box challenge on this level and you better pray that you didn't miss a single other box before that point.
    And if you are a mad enough person to try and attempt this while doing the Perfect No death challenge then I think I'd rather just put a gun in my mouth.

    If this section had been at the start of the level, I could MAYBE have forgiven it but the fact that you first have to play through the whole level up to that last point before even getting a shot at it is inexcusably bad game design. They could have just separated the two part into two stages and the game would have been SO much better.
    Oh.. what's that?... it IS in 2 part... but you just have to do that horrendous last part TWICE.
    What in the world could any sane being be thinking?!

    In short
    The game is fun if you are just playing through it casually but trying to complete the challenges and you'll have a miserable time.
    Also, why is it that time trial challenges can be started over on a whim but restarting the actual level have to take up to 40 seconds?    … Expand

    This isn’t Crash. Crash = Break Boxes to Earn Fruit to Earn Lives. In this game they give you unlimited lives because the levels are sadistic, and breaking boxes gives you nothing. Even Bonus levels lost their purpose.

    SHADOW MARKER - The new shadow underneath the characters is a welcome addition, as it aids in safely making the longer, more precise jumps.

    RAIL GRINDING - While being quite challenging at times (especially when trying to collect items), the new rail grinding mechanic was fun. I enjoyed the fast-paced gameplay, and felt rewarded when I was able to get through the entire area with all the boxes.

    LOYALTY - The game pays generous homage to the original trilogy throughout the level designs. It often felt like a proper sequel.

    CONS:

    LONG LEVELS - The new N.Sanely Perfect Relic collectible requires you to complete the levels without dying, while also collecting all the boxes. With levels that are sometimes twice as long as in the original trilogy, and areas that rival the hardest levels in the first game, this makes collecting everything a near impossibility.

    HIDDEN BOXES - Boxes are repeatedly hidden entirely out of sight, and require a multitude of replays of the already super-long levels. The original games had some hidden items and secret paths, but every level in this game has something hidden. More often than not, you'll be jumping above the top of the screen or attempting dangerous blind jumps, desperately searching for these hidden items.

    PADDED GAMEPLAY - Half of the gems are obtained by re-completing every level, while also re-collecting everything, all over again. These levels are inverted (layouts are flipped horizontally), and feature different, artistic coloring effects, which can help make boxes and platforms stand out. While interesting, the game mode doesn't offer enough incentive to completely redo everything you just did, especially on the harder levels, which likely will have already given you extensive headaches.

    POOR CAMERA ANGLES - The problem often shows up when you're rail grinding, but can also be a problem when trying to aim the precise jumps that are higher up. It seems the developer was trying to make these situations more difficult by doing so.

    NON-EXISTENT CHARACTERS - I don't understand why they would completely exclude Tiny Tiger, who has been a main-stay henchman for Cortex since the second installment. Uka-Uka, the super-villain of Warped, is shown briefly at the beginning, but is completely forgotten about afterwards. Even Aku-Aku was used extremely sparingly, in favour of the new elemental masks.

    LONG LOAD SCREENS - Normally, I'm not too bothered with loading screens, but when this game depends on perfect, no-death runs through levels, collecting everything along the way, you're going to have to restart the level over a lot. Every time you restart, it reloads the whole level, which the original PS1 games didn't even struggle with.

    TIPS:
    - I found that the game controls much better when using the D-Pad instead of the analog stick, especially when you're riding animals through the levels.
    - I would recommend leaving the side-levels (with the other playable characters) until you can do them all at once. Each character has a distinct jumping mechanic, which requires different button combinations to pull off. When you keep switching back-and-forth, you're bound to suffer multiple deaths by mixing up the controls.

    Overall, I enjoyed many aspects of It's About Time, but when I'm playing a collect-a-thon, I would at least like a fighting chance to obtain everything. I've replayed Crash 2 & 3 many times, and while certain things were difficult, I never felt like it was impossible to fully complete the game.

    I found the story was just okay. It kept the game moving, and made some reference to the older games, but also felt a little rushed at times. I also think it failed to properly flesh out the new elemental masks, which were a major focus of the game.

    The new masks added some variability to the levels, but the game depends on them a little too much, in an effort to increase the difficulty.

    I did run into some glitches/bugs, but nothing that greatly affected gameplay or ruined the experience.

    While a ton of effort was clearly put in to create the very extensive levels, with beautiful and clever designs, the experience still feels very padded. I don't think this should have been a full-priced game, and most people likely won't be able to get the full value out of it. I really wanted to love this game, but it ended up being much weaker than its predecessors. Maybe pick it up when it's on sale.    … Expand

    It is such a great game! It does justice to the previous games, and has more life than them. Even though I expected more cinematics, it is still enjoyable. I am getting the Platinum Trophy, that is for sure!

And Before focunsing on visuals and story, the bosses in this game are rather uninspiring, they most just use machines or contraptions (while Brio was nearly felt the same as C1 but slower and more boring). No i want to focus on my previous statement, why does it feel like more like TfB Crash project than a follow up for Warped? The answer comes in Visually and Story telling. The characters visually look and feel from a Skylanders game not Warped, with unnecessary redesigns where shapes and frames are completely change (example Coco n N.Gin, and Crash's weird neck dilemma), and this is something that completely stands out and i see many reviewers not pointing this out. And the story, with the exception of the intro, nothing else is mention or reference from Warped. Crash hasnt had a chance (with the exception of Twinsanity) to tell a fleshed out story ala Jak, Sly or Ratchet, but here he gets his chance and was lackluster. We have the premise of the multiple rift opening that Uka did (this being his last appearance on the story, and only mentioned once after this), from there on the story develops, and while some interactions with the masks are nice, most of this felt out of a fan fiction with many callbacks to previous games, dull characters interactions that one would day dream of, the complete focus on exaggerated expressions (i understand TfB wanted to focus on this, but they went full with this, it felt like they wanted to achieve every model expression for each character sheet got checked), the overly use multiverse concept thats been beaten to death and use as a free pass for stuff like Tawna's new design (she's from a different universe, which is just an excuse to show off their take on the character, lime they've done with almost the entire cast), the incorporations of meme that only the fanbase will recognize (i understand that their take on the story was one to be seen with a lack of seriousness, but adding the woah meme...that was the lamest thing done in this franchise, just embarrassing.), and the portrayal of characters (Cortex being a goof lile for 95% of the game, Dingodile's uninspiring inclusion in the story and becoming one of the group, Brio working with Cortex again with no explination whatsoever) . All in all, im glad Crash is back, but dont let you're nostalgia and hype blind you, despite this being billed as a Crash 3 follow up (which one would not recognize unless you read the summary or see the 4 in the cover), cause visually this is inspired on Crash of the Titans and Skylanders.… Expand

    I've been a crash fans for years as my first was crash2 and seeing the series keep getting games make me very happy to see the plot go right after 3.
    But this game in my opinion is a live child of crash twinsanity and crash1. With their new mechanics like grindingits a double edge sword as it's a good way to keep levels inter connected but with how the lighting system works where especially in booty calls where the blind spot for you is in front of you as you wouldn't know where is and when you're suppose to jump. It feels cheap because how it just pubish you not knowing what's next especially when it wants you to be on your toes. This game isn't Darksouls but this game feels like it with how crash controls.
    With design of levels hits an awkward situation. As level design is densely better than wrath of context it feel off as well having boxes being out of view and have search for it be more prevalent. The issue is when the game ask you how crash controls between going in and out of 2d and 3d section. 2d section feel like you're in a beat on up level as you still control him up and down it gives a simple jump on a box a mannerism just by how you set crash up for it. This kind of design can work if it made can make obstacles more easy to read. You look into the second world where the game shows how fore is going to be the big obstacle in this but since it blends so easy to the background where it feels like a sucker punch to your face if you're not ready for it.
    But with those set backs I still think the game is still god but feel like it needed to do is look back why people liked crash series in the first place. It was crash having tight controls where you were to blame if you lost a life. Overall how thoes grind sections work it feels like a mobile game with how cheap it can be. But with those blemishes it dose give up the sequel crash3 truly deserve with bringing tawna (TFB knows what they did z:]) and making the stakes bigger to make a game we don't forget from the series    … Expand

    Toys for Bob's game is a welcome addition to the original trilogy, although you will hardly remember its levels or music. Crash Bandicoot 4 is two steps below the amazing Super Mario Odyssey and Yoshi’s Crafted World.

    I honestly did not expect such a stellar game. Crash Bandicoot 4 is breathtakingly beautiful, features an amazing soundtrack full of references to the original trilogy, offers tons of content, and thrilled me to bits with its brilliant level design. What’s more, it stayed true to its gameplay roots, while introducing loads of great new mechanics. For me it’s the game of the year. I salute you, Toys For Bob! [12/2020, p.58]

    Crash Bandicoot 4 is a worthy addition to the Crash legacy. It captures the spirit, fun, and challenge of the original games, and adds a lot more that genuinely makes the experience even better rather than simply padding out the gameplay. The game is certainly challenging and the levels could probably use a few more checkpoints, but the number in the game is truer to the spirit of the originals than modern gaming standards. A little perseverance will get you through the game, but it’s going to take a little work if you want to be a Crash completionist. Overall it’s a great platform game that perfectly blends the old and the new into a fun new experience.
