A little bit long winded and short, but for cyberpunk or blade runner fans waiting on 2077, this fits the bill nicely. Rania after a while feels a bit too much like a social justice warrior over time, critical of android bigotry in one instance, but criticizing pop stars in another for example, but the story hits the intended mark.

Unless you really don't care about those technical issues, I will suggest to wait for a patch before considering buying or playing it.

10/31/20 edit : The last patch finaly adds a Vsync, so no more screen-tearing issue. However, the framerate while dirving the Hova seems now very low (around 20 fps I would say). Fortunatly it's fine when you're on feet, and even with a lower framerate on driving sequences, the game is now way more playable. My actual score do not represents the game itself (I only have a couple hours and it's pretty good so far), but with all those technical issues, I can't go higher for the moment.

A fantastic adventure / story focused game that explores some really thoughtful aspects of the cyberpunk genre. It's not going to blow you away, but it will make you think and its often quite funny. Engaging and thoughtful and fun!

Cloudpunk has the misfortune of being close to Cyberpunk 2077 both in the cyberpunk themes and name. However it couldn't be more different in every other aspect and deserves recognition.

Graphically, Cloudpunk is immediately different; not modern AAA standards but instead a retro and pixellated graphics system that is actually quite befitting of the cyberpunk theme. Despite this, I found the graphics mesmerising due to the omnipresent neon lights. I noticed that there is a lot of pop-in when driving around and this causes issues when driving at higher speeds. The main issue I had with the graphics was the framerate drops, especially when transitioning between areas. A smoother framerate would have brought the game closer to five stars.

The story of Cloudpunk is the bread and butter of the game. Cloudpunk is an illegal delivery company and you are working your first shift for them. Quite an unremarkable premise, however it's the character development that is most remarkable about this game. A handful of characters are consistent throughout the game and become very memorable despite never seeing more than a thumbnail picture of them. A key mechanic seems to be the choices you can make throughout the game, and while these are interesting, I didn't notice how much of an impact these choices made. A second playthrough would probably illuminate this for me but I have other games in my backlog to tend to. what this does mean is there is some replay value. Elaborating further would risk spoiling the story so I'll stop, but the lack of impact of decisions and anti-climactic ending marred my experience somewhat.

Finally, the gameplay. The simplistic gameplay serves Cloudpunk well. You either drive or walk, with driving being a very enjoyable experience as you can fly with quite a bit of freedom. The car can be a bit 'slippery' to control and collision detection isn't great. I found myself hearing collision sounds despite being well away from objects or vehicles. What I liked was that there wasn't long distances to walk, as walking gets tedious quickly. What I really didn't like was a mission that involved collecting 20 memories. When I returned these memories I was asked to collect 20 more, and 20 more after that before I gave up. This is quite a lazy mechanic that belongs in a Ubisoft game. Overall, driving is very enjoyable but could be improved with better handling and collision detection.

In summary, Cloudpunk might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it was a cup of tea I really enjoyed and it tasted different from the usual AAA crap. I found Cloudpunk most enjoyable in moderate doses as it can get repetitive, but the character development is quite compelling. I found Rania and Control very likeable whilst Camus was hilariously written. Give Cloudpunk a try if you want something different.

You're in luck. The writing in this game is excellent and some of the best I've ever experienced. We love a good anti-capitalist slant. The worldbuiding, environments, dialogue, writing, and voice acting are all of the highest caliber. And it's almost soothing to play. One mission even brought me to tears.

I cannot recommend this game enough. Unless you don't like voxel graphics, that is.

As going up, the scenery becomes more wealthy and society-like, with shops, nightclubs, neon signs. The cream of the crop lives beyond the rain clouds, in the even more mysterious place.

RANIA AND THE ORDER OF A SUSPICIOUSLY TICKING BOX:
Rania is thrilled of this new city and all the places, and she won’t stop asking “What’s in the packet?”, “What’s in the box?”, “What’s this? What’s that?” Yeah, it’s not a good start in a job where she deliveres all kinds of suspicious orders. In Cloudpunk, player also have to make choices, sometimes between life and death, not just shaping Rania’s path, but the outcomes of the situations. Few times I had to make decision, which were really hard to make, but I always went with my gut feeling.

Driving and parking the flying car felt awkward at first, but it didn’t took long to master the whole system. The car can be used everywhere, only the blue roadways gave the car more speed like a highway. I like how it’s possible to leave the roadway any given moment and roam the “streets”. Landing only happens in certain areas, that are marked in the map as a parking lot. This might sound restricting, but believe me it is very good restriction. It makes the gameplay so much easier, because then I knew where I can — and had to go. Making it possible to land the flying car anywhere, would make the whole game such a mess!

The map and minimap is filled with everything you need to know. Of course flying around opens up new areas. Even the collectables are marked to the map. The vertical movement is limited on every section, meaning, player have to use exits in the edge of the city to go another area/vertical level. All of these developer decisions benefit the player. I mean, even the vertical moving between areas are much better done with the exits, than giving player the full freedom to fly up and down, left and right as they want. Putting these places in sections doesn’t give any clear picture of the city, though, but it makes things just easier to handle in larger scale.

    AIN’T NO SUNSHINE IN CLOUDPUNK:
Visually I liked Cloudpunk. With some minuses, though. The game was so dark. I had to change my OLED TV setting drastically to make the game look more brighter. It was either completely dark or semi bright. I rarely saw any persons face, or anything other that was standing in the shadows. I still don’t know, was this my TV’s issue, or with the console, or with the game, or all them put together. I did my best to make the game look decent, but it was a stretch.

Another little minus is the controls. The cars can be upgarded to move faster and turn better, but moving Rania was very harsh. Thankfully, it didn’t matter, since there was no skills needed with her, other than just walking around, talk to people, deliver orders, buying/selling, collecting objects… very basic. The camera options are amazing, though. Rania can be controlled from first person or two different third person modes, which actually makes the gameplay and experience so much different. I changed the perspective depending the place I was at.

    BEYOND THE CLOUDS
In the end, the story, all the findable secrets, characters, gameplay, settings and visuals were interesting. There was something exceptional about Cloudpunk and it surely isn’t “just another punk game”. It had this overall mystery around it, not just the twisted corporational world, but the whole place itself and all the secrets lying underneath it all.

Cloudpunk is amazing game, very hooking and full of things you want to uncover. Definitely not just a delivery driving, but much, much more than that. Delivering to all sorts of shady people puts Rania in tough situations, either gaining friends or foes. Not forgetting all the desicions player makes throughout, makes a difference.

There were parts of Cloudpunk I enjoyed: the voice acting and the cyberpunk aesthetic. However, the core gameplay loop of being a delivery driver never resonated with me. If you like Bladerunner or cyberpunk-esque settings, I'd recommend this one but only at a decent price.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The controls are clunky and slow. The sound design is good and the graphics are fine, but the voice acting and story are subpar.

One thing that annoyed me the most was the virtual-signalling and SJW talking points that were sprinkled in here and there.

One such occurrence was a side mission involving a photographer who made advertisements for different brands. He notices the MC's lapel - which is a flower - and proceeds to ask whether he can use it for one of his photoshoots. The reason for this is because he liked the look of the flower and thought it would look good. But, of course, the MC is a raging Leftist, and proceeded to lambast the man, calling him a racist, and claiming that he was trying to "appropriate her culture," which is absolute nonsense. This really took me out of the game

Another issue I have is with the story, which kind of plays second fiddle to the side missions, which are numerous and repetitive. Now, while I never finished the game (mainly due to the SJW bullsh*t that kept pulling me out of the game), I could help but notice some glaring issues with the setting.

Apparently, the story is setting 10,000 years after the fall of humanity (somehow), where "global warming" caused the oceans to rise until they were in the upper atmosphere (this is the reason why the game is set just above the clouds and why there is nothing but water below the clouds). They somehow know what videogames are, despite the fact that they are illegal in the world of Cloudpunk, and nobody has made video game since the fall of humanity, and since everything is below the water, and has been for thousands of years, how, exactly, did some random Pakistani woman come buy "video game artefacts," and how does she know so much about them with no prior knowledge of them... Considering that they were outlawed before she was even born?

I haven't finished this game and don't expect that I will, especially considering the themes around "colonialism," "racism," "sexism," and "cultural appropriation," as well as the weird Queer/Bi stuff that constantly gets referenced (alongside feminism and SJW movements), making my experience one of an observer, rather than a player. This is especially true as those ideologies and movements wouldn't even exist in the world the Devs imagined for their game, mainly because they live under a Fascist dictatorship, which would be an environment where political movements like feminism and the LGBT (whatever else is on the end), as well as ridiculous ideas of colonialism, racism, sexism, and cultural appropriation wouldn't exist, because they would be stamped out.

Overall, I rate this game a 3/10. I got three points for the sound design, graphics, and for being playable.

Cloudpunk started off unique and interesting; you’re new to its world and are exploring it alongside the main character, Rania. Eventually, you’ll realize it’s only a cyberpunk delivery simulator with cringey voice acting and an even worse script. By that point, the game loses any redeemable qualities and becomes a burden to play. Just like the main character, and the mechanics, the game has little to no substance to offer.

It’s surprisingly touching, and the way the tension slowly ramps up makes for a really interesting experience. Interesting enough to make up for all the ways Cloudpunk is lacking, though? Your mileage on that will obviously vary. For me, it was, if only barely. There’s some engaging stuff going on here, but you need to dig through some pretty iffy stuff to get there.

Regarding this catastrophic failure of infrastructure, a wearying, cynical malaise of ‘Eh, what can you do about it?’ pervades Rania’s early forays into the city and proves just a little too real for us. The game’s own answer to this question is ‘carry out individual acts of kindness’, as with each one Rania makes Nivalis a slightly less miserable place for at least one person she encounters on her rounds – and sometimes that’s enough.
