Celeste is a game that is often praised for its difficulty and its message of overcoming anxiety and depression. However, I found the game to be frustrating and exhausting, and I didn't find the message to be particularly helpful.

I'm going to be honest... this game is one of the best 2D platformer ever made, while playing it i was immersed in the story and felt lot of empathy for the protagonist. I appreciate that the game's challenging nature was designed to serve as an analogy for the uphill struggle of liberating oneself from mental health issues. Still, the process of balancing the difficulty might have gotten a little out of hand. That's my only excuse not to award this fantastic game a 9/10.

The graphics are one of the finer points of Celeste. I am growing continually weary of the retro visuals approach but Celeste manages to evolve this slightly with some vibrant and trippy visuals, especially later in the game. The graphics do an excellent job of creating the ambience intended. The biggest issue might be that combining it with gameplay makes it difficult when precision is needed for platforming.

This segues me into discussing gameplay nicely. Celeste is a very difficult platforming game. This is my first red flag with all the critical acclaim - no way can that many reviewers be skilled enough to beat this game without the assist mode. I give the studio major kudos for having the assist mode but also take issue with the fact its existence is a must for me to access most of the game. The platforming for me just was not fun or challenging. When I finally succeeded I was bitter because I knew a lot of it was luck and that worse platforming was still to come.

This is Celeste's biggest problem for me, as it becomes very one-dimensional very quickly. You are constantly platforming with very brief breaks for the story. It doesn't help that I'm not a huge fan of platformers in general, but games like Mario have shown us for decades how this genre can be navigated with more depth than Celeste.

The story of Celeste is where I think a lot of the critical acclaim is biased by. On one hand it's quite nice and relevant to have mental illness feature prominently in a game. On the other hand, it has been done better elsewhere and at worst is outright pretentious and obnoxious. I can't care about Celeste's mental health when the punishing platforming is bad for my own sanity. We saw this same rubbish in Hellblade, another game positively-reviewed for the mentally-ill protagonist and not the actual game itself.

As you can probably tell, Celeste was not a game I enjoyed. As I accuse reviewers of being biased I come from my own biased perspective as I have played so many pretentious indie darlings that it put Celeste at a disadvantage, however games do not exist in isolation and Celeste should have learned from its peers. This game I recommend for a very niche audience who enjoy punishing platforming, which I imagine to be much fewer than those who claim to have loved this.

It's a somewhat fun game, but I do think it's overrated. The platforming is pretty tight and challenging at times, but there's not much of a fun factor. It does have a good message to the story, and some humorous dialogue at times, but overall, the game didn't grip me much and it was over quite quick. I'd recommend this for fans of platformers, but I'd wait for a sale.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved this game. The mechanics that appeared in each level made it more complex and interesting than others platformers. Also, the difficulty increases once you progress in the game and there are optional sides of each level that are way harder than the original, so everyone can enjoy the experience whether you look for a hard game or a casual one.
Besides the mechanics, the story was great. Being a Psicology student, I enjoyed how the main character solved her problem. Depression, anxiety, suicide are complex psychopathologies that don't usually heal like a broken leg, so you have to learn to live with it and I think the developers made a great decision with the main's character solution to the problem.

It's challenging but fair, despite being awful at games I was able to make it to the end fine thanks to generous checkpoints and other details that make the game forgiving without taking out the difficulty. The game doesn't supplement difficulty with arbitrary challenge that's actually unfair, it never feels like the game made a mistake when you die, it's always your fault for messing up. It's rewarding and even though it's challenge is part of the experience and story, if it proves to be to intimidating for you, you can use the assist mode to tailor the difficulty to accommodate for your skill level. The level design is excellent. The visuals are stunning despite being somewhat simplistic compared to Triple A games like Red Dead Redemption or The Last of Us Part 2. The controls are tight and allow for the precise movement the game requires, everything feels great and fun to control. The game is short enough to not overstay it's welcome at all if you are just interested in getting to the end credits, but it is filled with plenty of optional content to keep dedicated fans playing long after if they so desire. This is the game I think of when I think of a masterpiece video game. I absolutely recommend it to anyone with remotely any interest in platformers. If the difficulty is the only thing holding you back from jumping into it then I strongly urge you to take the risk like I did. if platformers aren't your type of games though, I can't say with certainty that it will change your mind or that you will love it as much as me. As a platformer it's a fun game. The difficulty pretty fair, you die a bunch, but aside from a death count there isn't really any repercussions to dying other than having to try again from the beginning of that small area, so it's no big deal. Overall I was pleased with the difficulty level and had fun playing through this game, though it does get a bit boring at times.

However, one of my issues with the game and the main reason I couldn't bring myself to give it a higher score is that I was not too impressed with the controllers. The mechanic of having to hold a button to hold on to the walls and manually move up and down (different than most platformers where you hold on to walls upon contact and slowly slide down) combined to a dash ability that didn't feel very precise (I found that the game was a little too sensitive in detecting dashes as a diagonal movement when you're actually trying to go straight) made me not love the flow of the movements in this game, and as a platformer that's a big deal. The movement mechanics were obviously a design choice, and I suppose it's purely going to depend of the opinion of the player, but, personally, while I wouldn't call it bad and I did get used to it fairly quickly, I also I didn't love it. The flow of the movements just didn't feel great for me.

Another point that I didn't love was some of the visual design aspects of the levels. Sometimes things are not very visible or clear. For example, chapter 4 has some pink platforms in front of a pink background. I found myself more often than I would like to admit not noticing at first something that was right in front of my face and obviously made to be used (and I mean literally not seeing it at first). As this is not something I find myself experiencing on other games of the genre, I have to assume it's an issue I had with the design of this game in particular.

And finally: the story. Not going to lie, I didn't like it. The dialogs, especially the ones with your "evil" self, are pretty cringy and felt pretty shallow. I understand what they were aiming for with the theme of overcoming depression and anxiety, and I have played other games that did a phenomenal job with this theme, but Celeste just wasn't one of them. Perhaps it was the characters and the dialogs, or perhaps it was that story felt out of place with the gameplay (probably both), but the story didn't really work for me and felt mostly cringy and something I wanted to skip.

tl;dr: not one of my favorite platformers, and I probably won't be replaying it in the future, but I still had fun as a one time playthrough.

Celeste is a great 2d platformer with phenomonal music and fun gameplay. It's controls and graphics are very simplistic, and the design of each level is easy figure out but difficult to master. It's like a smoother Shovel Knight without the combat and upgrades that's completely focused on platforming and collectibles. I would recommend listening to the soundtrack first.

It comes with a great toolset for movement, a great story with an endearing cast and heaps of replayability. What Celeste truly excels at from a gameplay perspective is by giving you a simple toolset and over the game, rather than expand on the toolset instead gives a great deal of depth to the center piece that is the dash, as a player you are given puzzles that require you to manipulate the rules of the game in ways that causes you to teach yourself more advanced movements. This allows for a brilliant sense of progression within the player, so that when the dash gets expanded in the final story chapter it opens up a numerous amount of options that, if the game gave you this early on, wouldn't cross a player's mind.

The story is something that I think needs to be experienced on a player by player basis, it's got a lot of themes of mental health and empowerment, but beyond that are some really great metaphors within the levels. Madeline, the games protagonist, has a really great arc, which whole I'm not going to go into any depth here, allows for the players sense of progression to align with Madeline's own progression on her journey.

The difficulty, to me at least, is the cherry on top. To start with, I would recommend using the D-pad for Madeline's movement, it's clear the game was designed to be controlled this way, and as such it is significantly more precise than the analogue stick. Anyway to the point, the difficulty works to enhance the experience, don't get me wrong the game can definitely be frustrating, (especially in two of the longest screens in one of the bonus levels as well as the bonus chapter that was added as a later patch) but if the game was initially presented to be a breeze I feel like a lot of the work that was clearly put in to cause the gameplay and story to compliment each other wouldn't work anywhere near as well. As such when you overcome these challenges it gives you the player a great sense of accomplishment.

This sense of accomplishment is I think the greatest thing about this game, not on a technical level but more so on a metaphysical one. The game is beautifully paced as to allow the challenge to grow incrementally, so the first chapter or two are spent learning controls as well as how some basic things interact, after that however is where the game reaches its stride. It starts focusing on the expectation that you are improving and as such the games 'screens' require more precise movements and timings. It seems pretty clear to me that the gameplau has to core layers to it, that being puzzle solving and execution. These two layers offer a great variety of challenges that are presented, and this aspect of the game truly comes to shine in the post story missions. (B and C sides, also farewell but that's a different beast entirely) The post story levels are entirely optional and exist as a way to challenge yourself, these are great and it's incredible coming from the hardest level in the game and going to the very beginning. At that point it becomes clear the journey that this game put you through.

On a final point Celeste added a final chapter known as farewell. This is an incredibly difficult level that also has essentially a new story with different themes. In this sense added to length is effectively doubles to base story's content. It surpasses the difficulty of every bonus level aside from maybe 7C (if you know, you know) and requires you to use movement techniques that while fully useable before, were normally only used for speedruns. It's a crazy level that can easily become frustrating, I would recommend doing this after all the bonus levels, it's playable after competing the epilogue chapter, and while there is a wall to stop progress at a certain point if you haven't done bonus levels, the initial step up in challenge from the eighth chapter to farewell is huge and may cause you to fall off with the game if not prepared.

Sua simplicidade, misturada com uma gameplay desafiadora e junto com uma trilha sonora memorável, faz a obra ser um dos melhores games de 2018. The controls are simple: you run, jump and dash...and when you die, you try again. Dying usually won't set you back more than a few seconds, which makes progressing throughout the game a lot less frustrating then it potentially could have been. Still, at times the game made me want to throw the controller against the wall, but it's those hard passages that gave me the sense of accomplishment once I mastered them.

For the most part, getting through various screens and passages feels like finding the solution to a puzzle, figuring out where to jump and when to dash, which wall to hang on to, etc. Then it comes down to perfect timing, especially when trying to collect the optional strawberries that are scattered throughout the game. But the real challenge are the B-sides. B-sides are unlocked by finding hidden collectibles. They are harder versions of the main chapters, with completely new screens/level layouts and passages.

Without giving away every little detail, I just want to point out that there is a lot of content in the game, many things to discover and legit playing through everything the game has to offer will keep you busy for quite a while.

And in its intended state, I just don’t like it.. im not one of those people that enjoy dying 1 million times in a video game, I want to relax and enjoy my games, not be on the brink of going mad…
Thankfully this game offers an assist mode to deal with this..
I gave the game a shot for how it was meant to be, you get a single dash though crystals and strawberries will refill this gash, you can climb walls and it’s a bunch of dashing and doging spikes supermeat boy style..
it didn’t take long for me to be like nah, im not doing this.. and played the rest of the game with assists on…
at first with just infinite dodges, but this game my character some super saiyan pink hair to give the visual of clearly im cheating right now, so I thought might as well turn damage off too..
so whats meant to be some ultra hard game for sadomasochists for me was an exploration game and I feel no shame in that, I got the story, I got to see every inch of celeste, collecting the baries, the crystal hearts, the cassetes to unlock the side b version of a chapter and better yet playing with assist doesn’t turn trophies off, and this trophy list is full of silver trophies for finding these collectables…
Needless to say playing with assists does take away the satisfaction of completing chapters and areas..
I got to get a feel for the games intention the most while trying to get a trophy for completing celeste on pico-8, that’s right, the devolopers are evil jerks.. I got to level 27 out of 30 before I gave up on the trophy and the platinum, so don’t think with assist mode this is all of a sudden some easy platinum trophy because it isn’t… mount celeste is going to be in your way of it one way or another..
somehow nearly 25% of players have this trophy though, I don’t see how. The game must have only sold like 4 copies and the one person that got it is a developer or their parents just didn’t love them.
    jokes, im kidding..
im just not one of those people that think, you know what would be fun?
dying over and over and over and over and over and over until muscle memory and luck prevent me from doing so,
    Its not my thing…
that being said I do again still see the greatness in this game, the brilliant level design, the brutal difficulty, the option to skip the difficulty and just explore, a great trophy list aside from the pico 8 bit..
Celeste is a really great package for people that love retro games, stress, or trophies

After 30 years of this genre, I expected something a little more interesting. The difficulty controls are nice, but the gameplay is outdated and the content repetitive. A little more effort on the visuals would've been appreciated as well, in an age of truly impressive art styles in other games, but not here.

I feel like I played better games than this decades ago.

Celeste is not a frustrating but challenging game, because of that the accessibility that comes from is innovative for indie games.

I’ll give credit where credit is due- Celeste has a wonderful message behind it and the way it presents it is nothing short of memorable. The added features to decrease the difficulty are also a nice touch, especially since we are living in the “git gud” generation and the dev was under no obligation to help make this hellish sub genre a little more beginner friendly. Beyond this, however, Celeste is essentially just another difficulty fetish platformer in a market swamped in them. If you’ve played Super Meat Boy and its thousands of clones, you’ve kind of already played Celeste. Having not touched one since Meat Boy first came out, I wasn’t as burnt out on the genre and seeing it through to the end was worth it. For most, however, it’s just not something I can easily recommend at the $20 price tag. It’s a solid game, but by no means the 9 or 10 critics are giving it. Expand

    Absolutely loved it

Tight controls that never bugged out on me, fun evolving level design that never felt unfair, and a suprisingly engaging story.

Celeste is my favorite game so far this year, and for very good reason. I bought it the day it came out because I was so excited for it, and was happy to see that it still managed to blow my mind. The platforming is tight with controls that, though initially frustrating, can eventually be mastered. Each level felt like a treat to experience. Most people will only play to the ending and collect the many strawberries lying around in the game, but that is only the surface for people who want to take it farther. Each level develops its mechanics and reinforces them in enough ways that they feel well used. Then, the more difficult B sides continue to use the levels' mechanics in new, inventive ways so that they still feel fresh. The C sides string them together into challenge gauntlets that feel satisfying to complete. After that, there are golden strawberries to collect for finishing all the levels without dying. The game allows you to start at multiple places throughout its levels, so you can practice them to your heart's content before doing the run. Still more, the game keeps track of your fastest times completing each level. Expand

Celeste is, without a doubt, not just one of the best platformers ever made, but one of the best games ever made. Period. It delivers in just about every conceivable area: gameplay, music, story, you name it. This is one of the finest games ever made, and you would be crazy not to give it a try. I do not like perfection engines so this game is really not for me. This is sort of like an opposite Dark Souls. The bonus collectibles have no value, so there is no point getting them unless you like extending the pain more. The story and characters and animation are lovely, all top notch - its the gameplay I found infuriating. The use of the main d or analog stick to control both movement and the angle of your extended jump-dash is so imperfect, at least 30% of my 1000+ deaths in the end were caused by incorrect angles. It never feels like I am skilled, even in the end, it just feels like I got lucky. Because you die so often, the weight of her death is pointless...there is no thrill or intensity in the gameplay, just a dull throb as you grind through it. I did enjoy the run away from boss mechanism in the Hotel, but hated the endless screens of fighting the later boss. Great concept - my son who loves super-meatboy LOVES it - but it left me frustrated and annoyed. Expand

Celeste is an beautiful, optimistic game about how triumph can outweigh any number of failures. It's about reconciling your pain, frustrations and defeats. It's about getting better, in every sense.

Celeste is one of the most entertaining 2D platformers in recent years. It'll defeat you from time to time, but its inviting controls, level design, and presentation will keep you coming back until you persevere and overcome every challenge thrown your way.

Celeste has a couple of hiccups in its aesthetics and tech, but the core of what Matt Thorson and his team have made contains a wonderful story of endurance and resilience for both the characters and the player, that begs not to be missed.
