Sep 7, 2020Coming to Captain Tsubasa as a fan of football, but knowing nothing of the anime and manga, I had no idea what to expect from this game, but I was more than impressed. Tamsoft, a company better know for little skirts-and-panties games like Senran Kagura, spinoff Hyperdimension Neptunia titles, Onechanbara and School Girl/Zombie Hunter was up against it with this game. After all, how do you compete with the might of EA and Konami without going so far into the realm of arcade experiences that the game is no longer recognisable as the sport? Tamsoft genuinely managed to figure it out. Captain Tsubasa is a back-to-basics football game with excellent pace and considerable verve. It's not just for existing fans of the anime or manga; this game is perfect for anyone who wants to enjoy clean, entertaining football action with their friends without having to first send them off to a college degree to learn how to play.
-
Aug 27, 2020Rise of New Champions is a great anime adaptation. A fast and spectacular soccer arcade, with every player and special move from Captain Tsubasa, and two single player story modes that deepen the experience.
-
Oct 23, 2020While the anime story grated on me, Tsubasa‘s gameplay kept me hooked since the animations are smooth and flashy, and it’s easy to pick up and play. Those who want a sim may not get the same joy out of this arcade-style soccer interpretation, but for me, it scratched a very specific itch that I didn’t realize needed to be scratched.
-
Aug 28, 2020Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions may seem like a niche title but it's sure to appeal to anyone who enjoys arcade sports games, especially ones with a steep degree of difficulty. Its flashy, challenging, and intense matches truly hit a home run. Oops, wrong sport.
-
Sep 16, 2020Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions is not a replacement for annual soccer sims in the market as it’s entirely a different beast. Instead it’s a fun and decent arcade soccer game that successfully scores its goal.
-
Sep 7, 2020Captain Tsubasa is a great title for the fans of the original anime, and remains totally true to it, but it may not be as fun for those who are new to the series.
-
Sep 3, 2020Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions offers a great mix of competition, action, and story, with beautiful visuals throughout.
-
Sep 2, 2020The one thing that Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions nails is its balance between not only being a worthy tribute to its source material, but a competent and fun game. As someone who isn’t a fan of sports titles, I never would’ve believed that I could have as much fun as I did with this game or that I’d become so interested in checking out the Captain Tsubasa series. I already feel like I’ve become a fan of the series and now that I’ve played Rise of the New Champions, I would love to see other sports anime titles get similar treatment in the future.
-
Sep 1, 2020Captain Tsubasa is a simple tactics-adjacent sports game with characters you’ll quickly grow to love. Nothing here is particularly groundbreaking, but it is so much fun seeing Japan’s Golden Generation grow into tomorrow’s stars. The game probably doesn’t have much of a competitive future. That said, it did make me go out and pick up the manga. So, it’s a win-win for creator Yoichi Takahashi. If you’re looking for a game that’s easy to get into and hard to put down, Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions is as good as any.
-
Aug 28, 2020Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions is an absolute rush to the goal as its soccer systems don’t lean too heavily into the outrageous. Instead, it finds a perfect balance of zany and strategy through control depth and over-the-top systems. The highlight is the two very different, but equally as important story modes, with a few multiplayer options to cap off the fun. You may encounter some AI issues, and some objectives during the story mode may not sit well, but you won’t want to sit on the bench for this game.
-
Aug 27, 2020Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions is the wild and hyper-stylised sports game I've been craving for over a decade. The gameplay is quick to pick up, but hard to master, and the over-the-top anime transitions and animations that are sprinkled throughout the action make it endlessly entertaining. Offline and online versus is sure to give you hours of entertainment if you're the competitive type, while the hefty amount of single-player story content can keep you just as equally entertained. Anyone who's been waiting for the next great arcade sports game need not look any further – it's here, and its name is Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions.
-
Aug 27, 2020Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions marks the franchise's return to gaming after a ten-year hiatus. This action-sports title delivers on the charisma and charm that have become synonymous with the series, despite a middling story. While there are some minor gameplay issues, Tamsoft does a great job at integrating the over-the-top and stylized action into core soccer mechanics. Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions is a more than solid addition to the long list of adaptations of the classic manga.
-
Aug 27, 2020With a little more sensitive controls and adjustments when it comes to scoring goals, Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Heroes would even have hit anime characters.
-
Sep 23, 2020Sports titles that choose to get away from reality to deliver a fantasy game often sacrifice sophisticated mechanics for more freedom in the game. The case of Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions is no exception. It is an attractive game that does not seek to be a faithful portrayal of soccer, but an arcade experience. Although it takes this approach, it offers many customization options while incorporating fantasy mechanics that delivers a game system which is rewarding and sometimes frustrating and unfair due to some gameplay design issues.
-
Aug 27, 2020Captain Tsubasa: Rise of the New Champions is a heartful love letter to the masterpiece of Yoichi Takahashi. Despite some flaws, such as a very clumsy progression system and some naive design choices, the game is fun to play, it feels like to be in the anime series, has a great potential online and the chance to create custom team and custom players is fan service at its best.
-
Aug 27, 2020Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions is exactly the frantic action-football game you can expect.
-
Oct 8, 2020Looking for a football simulation? Carry on. Looking for an over the top, long running, wacky football anime reincarnated as a video game? Well you already know this is the thing you were looking for. So have fun! We sure did.
-
Sep 2, 2020Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions isn’t a perfect rendition of the beautiful game, but it is a welcome return to an era of football games that don’t take themselves too seriously.
-
Aug 28, 2020A good representation of Captain Tsubasa's soccer style. Very spectacular at times, but very tedious at others due to the limitation of its mechanics.
-
Aug 27, 2020Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions is a heartfelt product that, despite a playful system that is not always adequately precise, offers a long-lasting, energetic and spectacular experience.
-
Aug 27, 2020Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions manages to become a good way to experience once again the awesomeness of the original series, although it certainly has room for improvement. In the end, the experience is deep, replayable and a nice first attempt for both Bandai Namco and Tamsoft.
-
Nov 1, 2020Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions is not a perfect game, and it's not the most mechanically dense game, but thankfully, it doesn't have to be. Its strengths lie in its unhinged, over-the-top on-pitch action and its delightfully silly presentation. If you're looking for a football game that lets you focus on all the fun aspects of the sport while ignoring almost everything to do with tactics and strategy, this is the game for you.
-
Sep 13, 2020While feeling a bit flat, this soccer game largely succeeds in faithfully portraying Captain Tsubasa’s world and atmosphere. The game’s slow pace can stand in the way of your enjoyment, but both the story and action are of great quality, and there’s a lot of it too. The simple controls make for an exhilarating soccer experience, but it’s hard to deny that the progression of each match largely feels the same.
-
Sep 11, 2020Rise of New Stars offers a great anime experience by utilizing the unique football match rhythm of the anime series and by using great anime visuals.
-
Sep 7, 2020Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions takes the football of the original manga from Yoichi Takahashi and makes an average soccer game. Takes strange decisions on the playability side, but it's one of the greatest games of the saga.
-
Sep 1, 2020Even with some of its mechanical and story-telling shortcomings Rise of New Champions is a fun time that shows why this is a beloved series. There’s a lot of joy to be had in following Tsubasa’s story and creating your own and the flashy football action has some shining moments. With some more tuning and gameplay focus, there’s a really bright future for Nankatsu’s football star.
-
Sep 1, 2020Anyone hip to the source material is sure to find a lot to love about Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions. And if you’re tired of the same old song and dance that is Fifa and Pro Evo, RoNC might just be exactly what the doctor ordered. But I’d also love to see Tamsoft and Bandai Namco take another crack at this universe because most of what’s here could be made exceedingly better with a solid polishing. Until then, I’ll keep shoulder-checking and falcon-kicking my way to the championship.
-
Sep 1, 2020Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions is a brand new videogame dedicated to the iconic anime series. With two career modes, the first following the classic events and the second offering an intriguing brand new story, with graphics very similar to the anime and some great moments, this is the most advanced Captain Tsubasa game ever created. Though, there is the feeling of a missed opportunity both gameplay side and story. Frame-rates are not so solid and we would have loved the addiction of the primary school tournament.
-
Aug 29, 2020If you like Captain Tsubasa, you’re going to have a great time. No there game has ever recreated the series like this, and even with its flaws, it’s a treat for the fans.
-
Aug 28, 2020Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions may be a game about students playing football, but it feels more like a tactical battle experience. You wear teams down by crushing their players. You smash through defenders and score ludicrous goals. It's not realistic but that's a good thing. It's about something more fanciful, more spectacular, more theatrical.
-
Aug 28, 2020Captain Tsubasaa: Rise of New Champions is pure fan-service and offers a great adaptation of the original material. On the other hand, its shortcomings are numerous, and if you hope to find here a good soccer game, you might be better off looking elsewhere.
-
Aug 28, 2020For over-the-top soccer action, few will surpass Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions, which captures the feel of the influential anime's bombastic style of soccer. Fans of the show have also been catered to, with full rosters, voice acting, and the ability to create a team of your favorites. The core gameplay, however, is a little lacking, particularly for those looking for a faithful recreation of the world's most popular sport with some early warning signs for this year's FIFA not boding well.
-
Aug 27, 2020Generous in terms of fan service, equipped with complementary scripted modes and gameplay ideas that blend well with the style of the original work, Rise of New Champions is a good Captain Tsubasa game, but in some ways it forgets to be a good soccer game.
-
Aug 27, 2020Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions is an imperfect title, a title that shows the side to several problems. However Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions entertained us, amused us and still offers a breath of fresh air in the videogame football scene.
-
Aug 27, 2020Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions is not a very good arcade-style football game. But it has the Captain Tsubasa's signature that offers some epic moments during its matches, and everything fans need to be hooked, like two story modes and some basic but strong ways to play with friends offline or online. It's very simplistic, quickly repetitive, but also very very enjoyable, especially if you're in need of something less serious.
-
Aug 26, 2020Captain Tsubasa Rise of New Champions is a good football game, accessible but not devoid of some subtleties of gameplay that will please the most accustomed. Beyond the Versus and online modes, the nostalgics will be happy to relive the adventures of Tsubasa faithfully traced while the New Heros mode is generous and pushes to chain the matches at the heart of an original story. There are still AI problems in the field that are relatively annoying and things can get repetitive. Overall satisfying.
-
Sep 1, 2020Captain Tsubasa has genuine depth behind its arcade flair, but the initial presentation leaves a lot to be desired thanks to a dull, aggravating, and sluggish introduction to its characters and systems.
-
Aug 31, 2020Authentic anime soccer with plenty of story dialogue. On the pitch it is rather average, though, and doesn’t give you enough options in front of the goal.
-
PlayStation CountrySep 18, 2020While it’s a joy to take on familiar teams, the game’s reliance on familiarity with the series makes the story mode unnecessarily difficult – either you execute a famous play, or chances are you won’t score at all. This effectively bars players unfamiliar with the Captain Tsubasa saga from enjoying Rise Of New Champions. This is a game that gets exciting only when it leaves rudimentary football controls behind, which is less often than you’d think. If you’re not a fan already, this amounts to another game where players only distinguishable by haircut run after a ball. [Issue#180, p.74]
-
Sep 2, 2020Regardless of whether or not you're familiar with Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions, if you're looking for a breezy arcade-style soccer game that relies heavily on its anime influence and has some strong mechanics, this game is worth a look.
-
Aug 27, 2020Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions is a complete deception. It is a terrible soccer game and an awful anime representation.
-
Aug 27, 2020Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions aims at both anime and football fans, but it fails to satisfy both audiences.
-
Sep 12, 2020Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions is a very primitive arcade soccer game with RPG elements based on the popular manga. Like many other projects based on anime and manga from Bandai Namco, it is made for inexperienced casual players, so there is no deep gameplay or any other interesting mechanics. Although if you are a big fan of Captain Tsubasa manga, you can add a few points from yourself to the final score.
-
Sep 11, 2020Fans of the source material will appreciate the effort put into this, though the game's slow and counter-intuitive controls will probably leave even them with a bad taste in their mouths.
-
Sep 6, 2020Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions ends up being an unsatisfying game. It's far from the ideal experience and is spiced with various bugs and a poor translation that makes dialogues meaningless. The rest of the content, which adds a correct online mode and a dream team editor, is a nice addition but not enough to carry the weight of all its shortcomings.
-
Sep 3, 2020If you’re a big fan of Captain Tsubasa, you might actually get a kick out of what’s on offer here. While its story scenes are a bit lifeless, they are genuinely entertaining, and there are plenty of twists and turns. You’ll have to grit your teeth and make your way through many unfulfilling football matches to enjoy them though. Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions didn’t have to be FIFA, but it at least had to provide a game of football that felt dynamic, fair and fun. It doesn’t do that, unfortunately, and so for most it’s going to be a major disappointment.
-
Aug 29, 2020Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions is a bit like when you fancy watching a game of footy but there's only the Scottish league on the telly. Sure, it looks like football to the untrained eye, and yes, occasionally it's entertaining just like real football, but you're mainly there hoping that someone is going to get chinned.
-
Aug 28, 2020Soccer is a game all about teamwork; which is fitting for Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions, a title where the multiplayer and co-op features shine the brightest. However, when it comes to single-player features, like the game's Journey mode and figuring out the soccer gameplay mechanics, you're better off benching those aspects.
-
CD-ActionNov 16, 2020Captain Tsubasa’s biggest strength is its touching story about friendship, rivalry, and the love of football. Unfortunately, I’m not talking about the game. The narratives of both story campaigns in Rise of New Champions are boring, full of clichés and poorly written dialogues. That’s not the biggest problem though. As soon as a match starts, the abysmal gameplay turns the game from okayish to awful. [11/2020, p.32]
-
Sep 15, 2020Captain Tusbasa can be fun when you grab some of your mates for an all out brawl on the pitch if the scoring mechanic wasn't so dumb. It takes away all of the tension of a match. Skip this one unless you're really keen to experience the so-so campaign for yourself.
