What a terrible game. What a sad return to WW2. I actually enjoy the campaigns of COD games - this is the first that i just find totally unplayable. Bad characters, the worst quick-time-events i've ever seen, arcade-style shooting and the most boring story.

I’ve played a few of the “Call of Duty” games before, but I’d say I have a weird history with this franchise. My friends and I have spent numerous hours playing several “Call of Duty” games (notably the “Black Ops” sub-series) in local multiplayer (mostly through fighting bots and taking on Zombies), and I’ve had some fun playing those games, since I enjoy some local cooperative multiplayer with friends, but “Call of Duty” is in a weird boat where I feel it's simultaneously the most underrated and overrated game franchise out now. Underrated in that the games are relatively fun in short bursts, and perhaps not as bad as the internet might lead you to believe, but overrated in that they aren’t nearly as good as their blockbuster sales might lead you to believe. “Call of Duty” is not one of the greatest franchises in gaming, it’s simply one of the most persistent, as it continues to receive yearly installments that sell like hotcakes in spite of their general averageness. And while 2017’s “Call of Duty: WWII” was a hyped entry when it was announced for returning to the boots-on-ground gameplay style after so many futuristic entries, this entry honestly epitomizes the “averageness” that has rendered the series unexciting.
“Call of Duty: WWII,” presentation-wise, does things pretty solidly: of course, the game is graphically impressive, just as any number of Activision games are, and gameplay-wise, it's at the very least functional. It’s fast-paced, the controls are fluid, and the gunplay is competent stuff. Beyond the campaign, this is another “Call of Duty” game that I’ve played with friends (as I mentioned, mostly against bots because that’s what we like), and it is occasionally pretty fun. This is a very minor thing, but I never got to mention this when I reviewed “Battlefield 1,” which I’m using just for the sake of comparison, but one thing I found so fun in that game was being able to use a shovel as a weapon, just because it was so jarring yet gratifying. “Call of Duty: WWII” does also allow you to use a shovel, which…I’m sorry, I know it’s really minor, but I just get a kick out of it.
The reason I had to mention something that minor, though, is because I'm really reaching to find something positive to say about this game. I had some big issues with it, but the biggest, most glaring one is this: if you've played one “Call of Duty” game, you’ve played them all, and this entry hits that nail on the head. There’s nothing exciting about the gameplay here, it’s competently made but severely lacking in anything that captivating. Beyond the lack of standout gameplay elements (well, outside of vehicle sections that stand out for the WORST reasons), the campaign is unbelievably short and painfully unfulfilling. Much of the story is a mishmash of clichés with forgettable characters, and the game is so cinematic that it feels like most of the game’s length is spent watching. I know I mentioned in my review of “Battlefield 1” that it too had a campaign that felt short and occasionally had too much watching, but “Call of Duty: WWII” takes those flaws and turns them up to eleven. And the difference here is that “Battlefield 1” actually had a good game to go along with it, but with “Call of Duty: WWII,” I mean, I just beat the remaster of “Modern Warfare 2” about a month ago and I feel like I’m playing that exact same game here. By the way, I know I’m hanging around the “Battlefield 1” comparison a lot in this review, and I don’t want this to feel like a compare-and-contrast piece because a game should be judged on its own, but frankly, I feel the comparison is worth bringing up because I refuse to believe that “Call of Duty: WWII” would exist had the fanbase not caused such a stink about “Infinite Warfare” a year prior, and then EA not hit it so big with the announcement and trailer for “Battlefield 1” not long after. This game feels like it was conceptualized and created only to ride on the coattails of “Battlefield 1,” and frankly, to me, it often just feels like a rip-off of it.
I really have to hand it to the “Call of Duty” series, because it is just extremely good at diluting and watering down the entire FPS genre for the biggest audience possible, most specifically casual gamers who don’t play enough video games to understand why the franchise is not nearly on the level of creativity as the many games it finds itself so eager to copy off of And that is precisely the case with “Call of Duty: WWII,” which has its moments of fun, but continues to carry a “been there, done that” vibe. It’s the same game you’ve played for years, and it remains a very safe, stale, lowest common denominator shooter that I can’t help but feel simply indifferent towards.
    Final rating: 5 out of 10 “Hmm…”

Call of Duty: WWII is peak Call of Duty to me (because I have not played the Modern Warfare reboot or CoD:BlOpsIIII). I think back to playing Call of Duty: Ghosts a few years into the current generation and thinking about how awful it looks next to PS4 exclusives like Uncharted 4. Now we have a Call of Duty that finally looks, feels, and sounds like a current gen game. Activision stoppedCall of Duty: WWII is peak Call of Duty to me (because I have not played the Modern Warfare reboot or CoD:BlOpsIIII). I think back to playing Call of Duty: Ghosts a few years into the current generation and thinking about how awful it looks next to PS4 exclusives like Uncharted 4. Now we have a Call of Duty that finally looks, feels, and sounds like a current gen game. Activision stopped counting money and finally made a great game.

Let's gloss over the multiplayer. It is the classic boots on the ground game that fans have been supposedly clamoring for since Call of Duty added cyborgs and exoskeletons. As an old school gamer, I love it. Jumping into a match was as disorienting as ever for a new player yet I the shooting and killing is the same. I love that I can pick up great weapons off the corpses of higher level players. I think an equal start mode would be better, liked fixed classes in Team Fortress and Overnight. Overall, I love the old school World War 2 action and finding a match was incredibly easy. There is also a zombie mode for co-op lovers. No one says that Call of Duty is not the complete package, unless they are talking about CoD:BlOpsIIII because that game did not have a single player campaign.

The single player campaign in in CoD:WWII is the best I've played in a Call of Duty game since CoD 4: Modern Warfare back in in the 00s. The campaign is so good, it rivals the campaigns in great single player only games. Although the game is focused on the grim reality of World War 2, the developers added a lot of fun elements like sniping levels, a little tank action, and some light air combat. The tank inspired level was all the more amazing with the destructible environment and the great audio. You can hear the crunch as you drive over piles of bricks. Why doesn't Activision make an entire game like this, and I don't mean the pay-to-win World of Tanks? The air combat section was a bit kindergarten (no pun intended) but still looked and sounded great. If the ACE Combat series looked this good, I would buy into it. The stealth missions will hold your hand, as usual, to a certain extent, and letting the game proceed after failing with stealth is new. In many ways, CoD:WWII felt like a mashup of World War 2 game classics minus Castle Wolfenstein. (Wouldn't a Call of Duty version of the Great Escape be bonkers? I suppose it was done in CoD:BlOps but then again, when has Activision every refrained from repeating itself?)

The health system in WWII is a bit iffy. Rather than crouching under cover to regain health, the player character uses health packs. Sometimes a buddy will toss you a health pack and sometimes you find them laying around in the forest. I see this as a side-grade of the usual health system that Call of Duty borrowed from Halo: Combat Evolved. What the game really needs is a true a.i. system that does not have every gun trained with 100% accuracy on the player character.

The NPCs will shout "Daniels" a few times a minute. If you are named Daniels, then you will love this game. Or you might hate it. The developers are pushing toward immersion and they succeed halfway because the barks from the NPCs are too constant and the game still has to throw up on-screen directions. The levels are also designed to be idiot proof. The player area is in most cases quite narrow and serve to funnel players back onto the set path. The game does not reward curiosity, even if there are 33 mementos to collect.

The story is the real star of the campaign. The character detail and voice acting help to sell it. World War 2 aficionados will know the context of the battles, even if the details do not all seem authentic. The human story, however, is told well, and I do not envy the men who endured all those months of fighting from D-Day to crossing the Rhine.

Full disclosure: I bought this game for $5 used from Gamestop. Then PlayStation released the game for free a month later. Activision did get some of my money out of this (and they deserve it), but I think Activision's ultimate goal was to have more players to buy additional content on-line This is silly in for any historical game as the appeal of the game is the historical accuracy. If Activision focuses on making good games, people will buy them.

There was alot of big talk from the devs leading up to the release suggesting a reinvention of the COD game design, sadly this was not the case just more of the same in a new skin - that isnt a flaw as the formula is still successful here, just disappointing that more couldn't be done to push the franchise forwards given the IMO extremely entertaining (but poorly received) infinite warfare. 1st the quick time events (QTE) are horrible maybe it's me but reading the prompts wasn't obvious initially, and these QTE start getting over used real quick.
2nd If anything makes me scream obscenities at a game it's headshotting an enemy (not a boss a normal grunt) and them getting up as if nothing more inconvenient than a tenis ball had bopped them on the nose and if you shoot a German in his velar weave mithril silver trench coat expect to empty several rounds to inconvenience him, what the hell man!? it isn't 1996 anymore! games moved past this kind of cheap bullet sponging decades ago.
3rd British SOE agents, there is SOO much wrong with this anyone with half a brain or any level of understanding of the SOE is forced to cringe and I'm not talking about the now obligatory female agent (they existed maybe not in the capacity shown but I can live with that) what made me cringe was as soon as SOE were mentioned I thought ok when do they roll out the cockney weasels.. TADA as if by magic.
By the time I derailed an heavily armoured train WITH A JEEP!!! ffs I had had enough, I couldn't suspend my disbelief any further this campaign was badly written poorly implemented garbage.
I'm glad I didn't pay full price for this game I would have felt violated.
I'm yet to try the multiplayer, for all I enjoy MP COD, the campaign is primarily why I used to buy these titles.

Call of Duty WWII has an amazing campaign, but it isn't enough to save it from being one of the weaker entries in the series. The online play is disengaging and tarnished by easily forgettable maps and the zombies mode is incredibly lacklustre in comparison to the main Black Ops series entries.

Better than the last few CODs, but still pretty average. The campaign this time around was too over-the-top and repetitive for me. But the multiplayer did add one mode that I enjoyed; War. Plus the zombies was a bit better this time around. But it just didn't do much for me overall.

In my opinion it does what it sets out to do excellently. Don't expect the depth of an open world RPG- this is an action packed, linear shooter that rewards reflexes and accuracy. The story knits it together nicely and has some moral and historical messages that while a little trite might be of value to those not familiar with WW2 history.

Graphics are realistic, very detailed and smooth on the normal PS4, and the cut scenes could genuinely be stylized live action at times.

The campaign is relatively short but extremely dense, there is not a second of boredom. Reasons to replay include higher difficulties and collectibles. It is nicely varied with sniping, trench warfare, turrets, stealth, planes, tanks, jeeps and more. The short tank sequence in particular is brilliantly tense if you get into the mindset.

There are some horrible weapons too like flamethrowers and double-barrelled shotguns make you pity the Nazi victims at times.

I don't play multiplayer FPS so cannot comment on that. Zombies looks like a fun addition.

It's not a 10 because it isn't incredibly original, and the campaign could be a little longer, with perhaps a bit more flexibility on routes or tactics.

I gather most of the griping on here is about the multiplayer. I'd honestly ignore those complaints and highly recommend picking up the game just for the campaign.

The easter eggs, mechanics, and story were exciting to spend time with and although it's exactly what you'd expect the zombies mode to be like, I still thoroughly enjoyed it as somebody who never felt interested in playing it at all. I really wanted CoD’s return to World War II to be something more than a solid game – but it’s not. I couldn’t shake the feeling that I’ve already seen all this, that the developers (or perhaps the publisher) chose to create something as safe as possible. There’s just one campaign mission that surprised me with its scale, the rest is just a disappointing “best of Call of Duty”. The multiplayer is as good as usual, but it was infused with unnecessary systems resembling mobile titles, e.g spending in-game currency on pointless tasks of the “kill 100 enemies” variety. Missions that make you watch other players open their loot boxes are the pinnacle of absurdity. [13/2017, p.64]
