Nov 1, 2019So yes, I spent the majority of my weekend just downloading the game. And no, I don’t think that’s anything close to excusable for any release, let alone such a mainstream, big-budget game. But Modern Warfare’s slower, more deliberate pace leads to an experience that feels very different to and more intense than the slew of recent Call Of Duty iterations. Just be prepared to spend a long time staring at a download bar.

Oct 24, 2019While Black Ops 4 eschewed a single player story in favor of Battle Royale, Modern Warfare puts extra emphasis on its campaign.

Nov 4, 2019As long as we’re not bullshitting here, I do not think Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a good video game. At the same time, it’s a game I enjoy playing, because I am, as I just established, a hypocrite. Or at the very least, I have been able to negotiate with myself a church-and-state separation between the well-established norms and pleasures of first-person military shooter video games, and their often specious storytelling.

Oct 25, 2019Modern Warfare's campaign trades on the same kinds of gratuitous thrills as its predecessors, but the grim reality of 2019's actual battlefields and terror attacks is a poor fit for the Call of Duty theme park ride.

Oct 28, 2019Call of Duty: Modern Warfare features one of the best campaigns the series has ever given us, filled with complicated politics, quiet setups, and brutal moments of violence. It’s a gray world in which it may be impossible to stay on the side of the angels if you’re to stay effective. I felt fear and regret. My heart thumped in my chest, and my pupils dilated. It’s a thrill ride that wants to impart a message, but the message carries little insight, and no answers.

Oct 28, 2019Call of Duty: Modern Warfare may revel in its edgy depictions of armed conflict, but it's so one-note and routine about it that none of it really lands. It's visually impressive, and the combat all works well, but ultimately I spent hours playing something I just can't care about. I think I kind of hate it. Not because it's a bad game, but because it's just so... Call of Duty.
