Overall gameplay, concept is fun - especially on first levels but clunky controls, bugs and framerate drop dramatically score making this game sometimes unplayable. I would not dismiss it if you like oldschool games however I would recommend to wait a while for the Dev team to FIX BUGS!

So much potential! This game can be so much fun to play with friends but the consent crashes and bugs make it more hassle then its worth. If they fixed all the problems then Its worth a play but as of right now, avoid it.

Really good premise, but it runs shockingly on ps4. At the start of every level, your character pauses for two seconds mid walking, on the later stages this means you can't get out the way of airstrikes.

The novelty of the game wore off pretty quickly and some of the characters are useless or rehashed versions of others.

Glad I didn't pay for it

Broforce, a side scrolling shooter with a retro style, is great fun, if not a little short, and not to mention, incredibly buggy as of now. I like the Super Nintendo-ish style, but why is it so laggy? The FPS drops all the time, and it's infuriating for such a seemingly simple and non-graphically demanding game. The controls lock up for a few seconds after you spawn as well, leaving you vulnerable to enemies. I have no clue why this wasn't spotted and sorted out, as it's probably the most maddening thing about the whole experience, and the load times can be atrocious too. if you can see past all of that, you'll have a surprisingly entertaining game on your hands to occupy you for a little while. You should grab it while it's free with PS Plus, but if you can't and the game's been fixed by the time you're reading this, I'd say it's worth your 15 bucks. Expand

Broforce does have this capability, do not misunderstand; the problem here is that the online-play is flawed at best.

At first the online worked flawlessly, then when we got about 30% through the game it started spazzing out, reviving each other but it failing to actually revive, thus wasting the limited amount of lives you are given; input lag crippling the experience the whole way. I would like to confirm that this is not an internet problem on our end, we immediately played Smite and SFV to test and both worked completely fine.

Another huge problem that happens both online and off (and this is common, not just me) is that at the beginning of the level the game won't receive your inputs for the first few seconds, however the game keeps going on, obviously this leads to a lot of BS deaths, which wouldn't be horrible if the loading screens weren't unnecessarily long.

Overall the game would be decent for a single-player experience, if a bit short, but as an online experience this game is severely lacking as of right now, if the dev team fixes it's issues the game would be a solid 8/10.

This is the PS4 release review.

BroForce is an American squad overloaded with power and testosterone. If theres a problem, these guys solve it. Like your classic 80's action movie, this games about bullets, not words. So don't expect to shed a tear during a bromance.

From Rambro to Indiana Brones you'll play as many of the countless American action heroes you know and love. Each one of these hilarious characters comes with there own weapon and special technique.
Upon death or rescuing a POW, you are automatically replaced with another random bro. This can sometimes be annoying if you really want to use a specific bro, but on the flip side, there isn't really a bad bro to use. They all feel really powerful in their own way and constantly switching seems to keep the game fresh. At least for a little while.
Sadly, all missions feel the same and begin to get repetitive. Drop in by chopper, burn, shoot and kersplode everything you see, get back in the chopper. Repeat. Though its very entertaining to do so for a while it eventually feels like a re-run of an 80's flick.
What this game really lacks however, is any in-game information. It feels very bare bones. There is no list of locked or unlocked characters. No character or enemy database. No leaderboards (as far as I've seen on the ps4 version). No ability to replay past levels. Its empty. I wanted to see if i could speed-run levels and although i probably could, it isn't really tailored in a helpful way to do so.

The soundtrack for BroForce is exactly what you would expect. Heavy percussion and power metal. This is very well done and never seems to get monotonous.
As for the effects, everything sounds superb. From missiles spinning through the air, to grenades, shotguns and bodies being pulverized into mush, Broforce delivers and it felt really good to hear the power in everything.

Visually, there isn't anything wrong with pixelated game graphics. Its an art of its own these days, and BroForce pulls it off really well. Its colorful and diverse. Its clean cut and you know exactly what you are seeing. Its quite a beautiful thing to watch ten torched bodies fall out of an enemy base only to be exploded into a red gum or splat on the floor three decks below.
Sometimes though, there is a LOT going on. Too much even. It gets a bit crowded causing deaths because you just can't find your bro in the heat of the moment or the frame-rate drops just enough to take your focus. This is especially true in Multiplayer, which is great fun with all the dismemberment and kabooms but ... Wow.

Overall: If you're looking for a game to sit around for an hour or two and blow stuff up or send enemies flying into a bloody puke ball (with friends or solo), this is your game. Don't expect to stay up all night causing mayhem on this one though. BroForce seems to lose its charm a bit too quickly.

    6.5 / 10

    Pros: Cons:
    Explosive Repetitive
    Funny Lacks features / content
    Sound Frame-rate and freezing issues
    Pixel-gore!

    Are there any similar games?

There are platformers that are similar but I’ve never played anything quite like this.

    Favorite Character?

All the characters are based on movies and TV shows and they’re all named very similarly but they all have “Bro” in the name. My favorite character to use was Mr. Anderbro. Neo from from the movie series The Matrix. I called him “Punchy” because you could just punch your way to victory.

    Would you play it again?

Absolutely, if my friends are online and looking for some laughs, I would play this game again.

    Any Complaints?

Internet lag issues, when there were 4 of us in the party. The game had a tough time keeping up. Of course we were all spamming the “shoot” buttom so we were destroying the stages as went which wasn’t helping the frame rate issue.

As an added bonus you can even play with up to 3 friends online, which makes things even more unpredictable!

Had this game run correctly I’d have been awarding it a minimum of 8 out of 10 but, with this PS4 version at least, there are far too many bugs and glitches. At first these were usually fairly minor, such as the fact that the game would often freeze for a second or two at the start of a level, but they continued to get worse as the game went on to the point that by about 60% completion my friend and I found it almost impossible to play the game together online. I did carry on and complete the game in single player offline mode, and it ran OK despite the odd bit of lag here and there, but it wasn’t half as fun as it would have been had I been able to continue playing co-op.

A fun co op side scroller shooter. Really nails the 80's action movie theme. Love unlocking new bros. Game structure becomes very repetitive and you need to start over quite a bit since it is so easy to die. Makes the game drag out and the game can become a chore and not fun; so game is good to play in small sessions.

I played this game thanks to the PS+ subscription but I'll review it like if i bought it as is no longer available for free. Also this review is about the PS4 version (as stated on the page) it's important as some issues are "exclusive" to this version.

So let's talk about those right away, technically the game is a mess, at first it's not that annoying but the further you go the more bugs and (huge) framerate drops you'll encounter. Which is a clear proof of a game released too soon (part debugged, part not), what is even more outrageous is that it appears there will never have a patch to correct those issues. About the graphics we have a nice example of pixel art, sure it's not that impressive but it has charm and is artistically clever for a game that is a parody of the 80's action movies. Same goes for the sound design (I love the voice of the "narrator" it's so cheesy I laugh every time ).

Concerning the gameplay it's a 2D shoot'em up very frenetic, all the environment is totally destructible and the levels always offer a nice verticality. On the downside you can only shoot horizontally, when you have two stick, might as well take advantage of it. But the true golden idea of the game was to offer a lot of character (more or less 20) inspired by charismatic characters from action movies all with their own equipment and special abilities, if you know the movies it's impossible to not feel anything the first time you unlock a character. There's a nice difficulty curb, boss fights are challenging just enough to still be entertaining, in other word the game is very fun to play. Even more with friends.

The story is pretty shallow, like the movies that inspired the game, but those one-line report will always make you smile. If you want to finish the game it will last around 4-5 hours which is a fair amount considering its price tag.

In conclusion Broforce is a really fun game, specially if you're a fan of the 80's, but the gameplay could be more refined. But most of all the PS4 version is a failure, sometimes it's painful to play and therefore, if you're interested in an old-school coop shooter, I'll advise you to buy the PC version.

When you die and lose a life, your avatar is randomly changed into another, forcing you to change your tactics. Some heroes have pistols and rifles, others have to toss grenades and knives, and others are melee fighters. The campaign's story is a parody of american macho movies as well as american imperialism, and gets as silly as you can imagine.

Broforce originally launched on PS4 with a myriad of technical issues (bad frame rate and unresponsive controls, among others). But since then the game's developers have patched it. Install size has been greatly decreased, frame rate has been improved (although they have turned v-sync off and there is constant screen-tearing, with visible wobbling), and they have added multiplayer support.

Broforce is a nice little game, perfect for a couple of funny playthroughs, but certainly it's far from being an all time classic shoot-em-up such as Contra. On PS4 the game has been patched and expanded, but it's still a sub-par experience.
